Final Thesis Cinema, Audio and Media centre as a refurbishment of Penna Furnace in Sampieri, RG

MEME - MEDITERRANEAN MEDIA year supervisor project function location

2016 prof. Carlo Berizzi refurbishment multifunctional co-working Sampieri, RG, Sicily

The aim of the thesis is to present a requalification of the old furnace of Sampieri - seriously damaged by a fire in 1924 – drawing on its iconic, scenographic and productive nature. The project proposes the transformation of the building ruins into a media production centre particularly oriented towards cinema and television, since these contributed the most to the furnace international renown.

“... you can’t just indulge in “doing museum”, like one would be tempted when it comes to a fine building. The compass of an important historical building’s restoration should point to the preservation of its coherence. Therefore, the aim is to modify the building until it gets to the point of a restored balance (equal to the previous one), with renewed circumstances.” Giancarlo De Carlo 9

Being close both to a port and an airport, the requalified furnace is expected to play a leading role not only in the Sicilian area, but also in the rest of the Mediterranean region. The architectural bets are to combine different materials with the ancient ruins, to modify the original shape taking advantage of voids born from the collapses, and to organize spaces in a complex dedalus of flux distribution.

The entrance of the furnace is left as a ruin and transformed into a court by a suspended promenade. Behind it, the Hoffmann kiln becomes a distribution corridor that brings to the thematic rooms. Above it there are the multifuncional co-working room and the restaurant, with a perspective view on the sea.

DeAmicisArchitetti Studio Executive project of a valuable residential building in Milan, around a court with a suspended walkway

RESIDENZE CANONICA

year 2016 supervisor Bruna Rivolta, Giacomo De Amicis, Rossella Destefani project refurbishment and partial demolition-reconstruction function residential complex location Milan, Italy

The first choice appointment is to carry out subtle interventions instead of a complete demolition and reconstruction: interventions are considered to be more convincing and successful because they can incorporate a sense of “aging” (that we identify as a peculiar value in architecture), through the stratification of the introduced changes.

“Architecture - even private architecture - is public. Architecture is the ritual of the appropriation of places. Architecture is a function of the city and of the landscape.” 15

The second choice is to amend the proportions of the inner court by raising the level of the open-pit floor in order to create parking spaces in the current basement, and to generate a distribution system based on a single staircase in order to achieve financial and spatial economy, given the narrow spaces available. Last, the choices of the materials came before those of the composition. Both the limewashed finish of the brick’s surface and the specific conglomerate composed of cement with glass aggregate designed and produced specifically for the coverings and part of the internal facades, together with the bronze finishes, are all elaborately weaved surfaces conferring quality and preciousness to the intervention.

During my internship I was involved in the realization of executive elaborates, like the details of the internal transparent facade, of bathrooms, of the suspended walkway and of railings. I also worked on the plans of the internal distribution and of the elettrical system.

DEAMICISARCHITETTI STUDIO Architects: Giacomo De Amicis, Bruna Rivolta, Rossella Destefani, Luigi Bartoli, Luigi Lorenzi, Marco Morlacchi, Antonella Zaccuri Since 2005, our design approach has centred on making good use of our typical Italian ability to interpret, cross-pollinate and blend together ideas and lexicons from a variety of places, times and cultural contexts. Our aim is to realize projects that preserve a sense of time while providing new and original results in terms of performance and meaning: a synthesis of memory and the contemporary. Fuelled by curiosity, research (academic and otherwise) and the constant study of the world around us, we pay particular attention to connections and to the value of the space between “things, always aiming to increase the usability, diversity and the beauty of places, be they transport nodes or destinations. Our individualized approach to the design of buildings and urban spaces, together with careful attention to details, allows us to consistently provide our clients and the community at large with economic value, usability and high aesthetic standards.

The attention to details is a cetral part of Deamicisarchitetti’s philosophy. Here there are some of the analysis about the realization of the suspended walkway and its railing. 18

International Workshop Low tech and reuse project for a centre for gathering and sorting rice in Casamance, Senegal

RICE4RISE - KAIRA LOORO year 2016 supervisor Pilar Rodriguez, AutonomeForme Studio project pisĂŠ and bamboo building function gatering and sorting rice location Casamance, Senegal

Rice is the principal meal of Casamance, Senegal. The entire production process is entrusted to women who cultivate fields, collect rice and work to distribute it among the villages. The current production does not exceed the subsistence level, because most of the once fertile lands have been contaminated by the tides: the construction of the bridge-dam called Balouo Salo will create new extensive arable fields. The project of the Centre for gathering and sorting rice concerns a building that will improve the rice production, the living and working conditions of the women involved in the process, and the condition of the children they bring with themselves during the working time. 21

The map of the Centre is based on the aggregation of two buildings: the former, with organic shapes and longitudinal development, contains spaces for storage of the harvest and for processing and packaging rice; the latter is the place where children are housed, with a small kitchen and a common room where women can rest, eat and pray. The two buildings are connected by a courtyard covered by a woven straw roof that in addition to providing shade, allows you to collect rainwater into a well that is the centre of community life. Thanks to a mobile system that transforms the doors in pergolas a part of the work can be carried out in outdoors spaces. The two buildings are made of adobe bricks protected by plaster. The double roof brings a ventilated system that guarantees the best internal temperature condition. group members: Gadea Burgaz, Gaia Cassia, Provvidenza Rita D’Urso, Claudia Messina, Giovanna Roncuzzi, Daniele Tomei, Eleonora Vinci

Kaira Looro is designed as a meeting between international professionals and young graduates or students in a full time week work in order to develop low-tech humanitarian projects. It is an important cultural event which support a humanitarian project in Senegal, such as the construction of the bridge-dam Balouo Salo. This bridge-dam will improve the living conditions of 40,000 people who now starve, because of the rising acidic water that burns cultivation fields. The workshop gives a contribution in terms of project continuity, through humanitarian and economic interventions leading to the development of the area and based on local cultures and traditions, using only materials, technologies and construction methods compatible with the places.

Collection of projects Projects made during the years of university, all concerning the theme of living

STABLE&TEMPORARY HABITATIONS

Throughout my period of studies, the theme of living has always been the most fascinating for me. People’s quality of life is affected by the settlement of living spaces, be them the interior or the public areas of a city. More than one third of our life takes place in our houses; for this reason, it performs an essential role in the spacial and architectural research. The aim of these works (no matter how difficult it can be) is to improve the tenants’ life from a functional point of view (like a “machine for living”), preserving the relational emotionalism, in other words the affection and memories which turn what was only a “place”, into “home”. This reasoning involves the spaces of fixed abode as well as medium-term residences (college dorms and university accomodation) and short-term residences (hotels and refuges)

CASALEGNO - COMPETITION year 2015 group members Matteo Locatelli, Giulia Bonezzi, Paolo Gatti, Giovanni Pancotti, Giovanni B. Zanaboni project x-lam building function residential location Replicable prefab

The shape generating the project refers to the trditional pitched roof houses, typical of the buildings scattered throughout the Italian territory. Combining the idea of the house for the required needs, we analyzed the essencial living space within home, cues for modeling the starting pure volume. At the base of the internal distribution there is a distinct separation between the linving area and sleeping and serivices area, highlited by the light diaphragm placed in the centre of the building. This is an element of distribution as well as a contact to the outside. The clear contrast between the bedroom/services area and the living area is emphasized even in terms of interior heights. While the former consists of two floors, the second is characterized by double internal height to catch the light of the glass diaphragms and keep the staircase as an architectural element.

COLLEGIO VALLA year supervisor class team

2013 Prof. Alessandro Greco Architectural Technology 2 Mattia Borreca, Giovanni Pancotti project Ampliation with new construction function Residences for students location Pavia, PV, Italy

The project consists in the realization of an extension of Collegio Valla, existing in Pavia since the first half of the 20th century. The functional and residential conception is based on the research on minimal private spaces and on the maximization of common areas, with aggregation and social purposes. The project should be read cross-sectionally, with the juxtaposition of a glass-window and a roof inclined on a linear body made of reinforced concrete. The ground floor is reserved for the kitchen, the laundry and a winter garden, with a quadruple height which accomodates the walkways with the rooms. Accomodate overthrows containing cinema, study and relax areas lie corresponding to double bedrooms. The whole project has been studied and verified from a seismic point of view and it has been modeled in SAP2000 during professor Rui Pinho’s course.

A PAUSE ON VIA FRANCIGENA year 2014 supervisor Prof. Daniela Besana class Organization of the building site and building elements technology team Valentina Bellotti, Paolo Gatti project shelter building function temporary rest for pilgrims location Via Francigena, Italy/France Shelter for pilgrims as a pause during the trip. The project gives a general solution about design of different kinds of temporary refuges along Via Francigena: it is an ancient road and pilgrim route running from France to Rome, though it is usually considered to have its starting point much further away, in the English cathedral city of Canterbury. Restoration, prayer, sleeping and gathering spaces are thought considering small shelters with big potential that can be placed in several natural habitats. The modularity of cells permits the addition of shelter in relation to the crowding of the segments of the route. A module of common areas is provided for every group of three housing modules.
