INTRODUCTION Following the ten-year rule of Oliver Cromwell and the Puritans, Charles II acceded to the throne in 1660 in a period known as ‘the Restoration’. Widely known as ‘The Merry Monarch’ in homage to the liveliness and hedonism of his Court and self, Charles oversaw a rebirth of cultural life in London. A patron of the arts and sciences, Charles founded the Royal Observatory and supported the Royal Society, whose early members included Sir Isaac Newton. Charles was also the personal patron of Sir Christopher Wren, architect of St Paul’s and The Royal Hospital, which Charles founded in 1682. Of particular relevance to Covent Garden and Theatreland, Charles II was responsible for lifting the ban on theatres that had been in place for 18 years. His legacy continues to this day.
