T H E VA LU E O F GIVING It’s July 13, 2019 and we are at Tjörnekalv a small island outside Rönnäng, Sweden. We come to this paradise every summer and this year is no exception. This July 13 is, however, a special day – my son Winston was born exactly 7 years ago. It’s unbelievable how fast the time flies! But the kids’ birthdays are always incredible, they are always full of anticipation, curiosity and joy. Expectations start to grow weeks before the event and culminate in the birthday morning when the birthday hero is surrounded by gifts and is listening to the Happy Birthday song. But let’s imagine for a second that this year would be a bit different. What if instead of many gifts Winston would get from us only one gift card that would tell him that we have given him a tree in the Southern America? Would the happy glimmer and joy disappear from his eyes? No doubt, he would thank us politely but at the same time would feel a bit disappointed. Because he would have been expecting a different kind of a gift. He might even start wondering if he had done something wrong to deserve such a gift. Winston is only 7 and he clearly is not as familiar with the climate issues as the adults are, therefore he might not understand our reasons behind such idea. On the whole, a lot of joy associated with having a birthday would probably disappear as a consequence. When it comes to adults, employees and corporate decision makers, it is easier to understand our challenges. For instance, if an employer decides to gift trees to the company employees, they will be able to understand such decision. But deep down, I think we all want to be appreciated as a child on its birthday -or on Christmas Eve for that matter. When the company that you work for is handing out Christmas gifts some of these feelings that you experienced as a child come to mind. Expectations may have been built up for some time. The employees’ eyes are filled with curiosity and excitement The challenge for our company is to find products that have as little impact on the environment as possible, and yet have all the positive emotions associated with giving gifts. We need to be very open about our production and emissions. We also have to be humble about the things that we might be doing in a wrong way. We need to build a sense of security and to transmit it to our customers, so that they too can believe that our products have

a very small environmental footprint. And this all must happen beyond the safe borders of certificates and awards. This has to go so deep into our products that it becomes almost an invisible mark, engraved into all Vinga products. Naturally, building such trust takes time. As of 2018, we have been paying climate compensation for all our emissions apart from the ones coming from our production. This exception is merely due to the fact that we still find it very difficult to calculate the exact amount of emissions caused by the production. We do, however, hope to obtain the necessary information in 2020. The rest of our activities, such as product transportation, employee travel, heating for our head office etc. are taken into account in the climate compensation. At the same, despite its importance, we understand that climate compensation is not a simple payout – we know that we cannot buy ourselves out of responsibility simply by paying for the emissions. Our main priority is to reduce the amount of actual emissions. We do this by switching from the air transportation of our products towards boat or train solutions. We try to get our partners to use green electricity and we invest into turbines and solar power plants in our own production. We search for the right kind of materials for our products. In the autumn 2019, we installed solar panels on our roofs and now 33% of Vinga’s energy consumption comes from the in-house electricity, producing ca. 46,155 kWh per year. All in all, this might seem a trivial difference. But many small steps in the right direction can have a huge positive impact on our environment.

EMISSIONS A N D C L I M AT E C O M P E N S AT I O N Last year, we spent a lot of time thinking about emissions caused by our operations. We have mapped, calculated and set stricter policies in order to reduce emissions in several parts of our production chain. Although only a small part of the emissions occur here in Sweden, we thought it was natural to start taking action here, in our home country. During the past year we have invested in our own engraving machine, which means that now we have in-house engraving capability and cab avoid freight costs that would otherwise be generated due to the product being first shipped to the engraver and only then to the customer. In October 2019, first solar panels were also installed on the roof of Vinga HQ in Borås. We estimate that they will produce about 1/3 of our energy consumption. Another area responsible for a lot of our emissions is transportation. We do not use aircraft anymore for transporting our goods. Instead, we aim to produce our goods sooner so that they can be delivered with other transporting solutions, or alternatively we try to sell the goods that we already have in stock. We also have an internal policy regarding domestic and international flights. For example, Vinga forbids its employees to take domestic flights for work related trips, with the exception of the customer trips in Norrland. The most difficult part, both in calculating and trying to reduce the emissions, might be the impact of our production. We have a lot of information coming from good sources and we know what parts of the product’s life cycle see the largest emissions today. For example, we know that most of the emissions for textiles occur in production, mainly during the dyeing and preparation process. In order to proceed in this direction, we organized a supplier trip in the autumn of 2019, where we visited nine of our largest partners in China. The purpose of the trip was to talk about sustainability, to do a survey of the factories’ work processes and to prepare future plans regarding energy consumption. This material will help us greatly in our future supplier assessments. Now, we are approaching the end of 2019 and we can’t pretend that we haven’t had any emissions. Although our primary goal is to reduce the amount of actual emissions, we want to do something in order to offset at least a part of the emissions that we were responsible for in 2018. After a lot of internal discussion, we decided to do this together with Zero Mission. We have chosen to compensate for incoming and outgoing freight, air travel, car travel and energy consumption occurred in 2018 by participating in 3 different projects coordinated by Zero Mission. T H E P R O J E C T S T H AT WE SUPPORT VIA ZERO MISSION BIOSGAS PLANT IN INDONESIA In Indonesia, the use of firewood and expensive fossil fuel for cooking and heating water is still a standard rule. The aim of the project is to install small-scale biogas plants into households that have livestock, so that they could use these as a sustainable source of energy for cooking and lighting purposes. The project takes place on the island of Bali where biogas is produced mainly from pig manure. The residue from production is used as a valuable organic fertilizer that can improve harvesting. In addition to emissions that are avoided from burning wood and fossil fuels, this project reduces the amount of emissions also through the utilization of pig manure that would otherwise ferment and release methane. The residue from biogas production also replaces chemical fertilizers and the emissions from their production and transportation. Since its start, the project has contributed to installation of 18,400 biogas plants and avoidance of burning ca. 63,000 tonnes of wood.
S O LVAT T E N , C L E A N A N D WA R M WAT E R , U G A N DA SOLVATTEN (Solar Water) is a Swedish invention that purifies and heats water. The product also saves lives as it effectively prevents the spread of waterborne diseases. By combining several well-documented methods for water purification, Solvatten can provide between 11-33 l of potable water per day, as well as sufficient amounts of hot water for personal hygiene and other household purposes. At the same time, Solvatten has a positive impact on the climate by reducing the need for firewood, charcoal and other kinds of fuel. The project was initiated in 2013 by ZeroMission and Solvatten. Together with MyClimate and Ecotrust, Vinga offers climate compensation through Solvatten. The project is validated and certified in accordance with the Gold Standard certification.
SUN STOVES IN MADAGASCAR The search of new agricultural land and deforestation in Madagascar threaten the island’s unique ecosystems. According to WWF, at the beginning of the 20th century ca. 90 percent of the island was covered by the forests. Today, there’s only 10% left. In order to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and counteract the deforestation in Madagascar, new efficient stoves and climate-friendly solar stove are being manufactured and distributed on the island. The project also plants two trees per each produced stove. The Association ADES (Association pour le Développement de l’Energy Solaire) has produced solar stoves in Madagascar since 2002 and has been selling them at a reduced price to local households. Since 2010, the project has expanded its operations to the entire island and now also includes manufacturing of the efficient stoves that complement the solar cookers when there’s no sun.

T H E D A I LY WORK WITH CHEMICALS Chemical work is an integral part of Vinga’s daily priorities. Our main goal and basic responsibility as a manufacturer is to stop the flow of chemicals from our goods into the nature, protecting both our employees that are making our products and the environment with all its inhabitants. Our daily task is to identify and substitute these potentially harmful substances as early as possible, not because we have to, but because we want to. Where we don’t have sufficient information, we aim to acquire it from carefully selected and reliable sources. We are not chemists ourselves but we firmly believe that in order to develop a business model operating in the sustainable development mentality, we need profound knowledge about chemistry. As we want our decisions to be based on the right knowledge and reliable sources, for the past couple of years we have been working with a polymer and textile chemist Stefan Posner. Stefan has over 30 years of experience in research on chemicals in textiles and polymer materials, and he has collaborated with several companies, authorities and academia in several international projects over past few years. He has also been involved in the law preparatory work on chemicals, working closely with the UNEP Stockholm Convention, the European Commission and several national authorities. Stefan is deeply involved in research and chemical management that aims to find practical substitution of hazardous chemicals in the market actors’ value chains. Stefan is one of our most important partners in building knowledge, making the right decisions, identifying better choices and ultimately creating a difference - Creating A Difference.

For us, quality is more than just a good product, fine packaging and the enjoyment we hope our users feel when they receive an item from us. To us, quality work is equally as much about ensuring that the employees in the factories that manufacture our products work in proper, safe, legal, humane conditions. It also means constantly looking for new environmentally friendly materials, energy-efficient production and opportunities for improving our world by means of our daily work. We work in full cooperation and are certified in accordance with the following initiatives and standards.
GOTS stands for Global Organic Textile Standard and is an international eco-label for natural fibre. The standard regulates the restriction of hazardous substances and emissions throughout the production chain (supply chain). In order to become certified, the standard requires that fibres are cultivated organically in accordance with EU Directives and that thorough checks are performed throughout the process. There also needs to be full consideration of the environment at all stages of the production process. Through such certification, suppliers guarantee that their products are made of 70-100% organic materials and that production is responsible both environmentally and socially. Control and monitoring of requirements is undertaken once a year by an independent party. We are working to ensure that more and more of our textile products will be able to achieve a GOTS label.
BSCI BSCI (Business Social Compliance Initiative) is a collaboration between European businesses seeking to improve working conditions in the global supply chain. BSCI unites over 1,300 companies around a common code of conduct and supports them in working towards an ethical supply chain through a development-oriented system. The basis for the system is the common code of conduct that all members are committed to implementing in their supply chain. Both external auditing companies and internal audits evaluate the factories in terms of how well they meet the requirements of the common code of conduct. The Code of Conduct itself is based on the UN Declaration of Human Rights, the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and the core conventions of the International Labour Organisation, ILO. ISO 9001 A quality system in compliance with ISO 9001: 2008 is a tool for companies wishing to engage in effective, structured quality work. The ISO 9001 requirements are addressed to all companies regardless of size and business focus. The purpose of a quality management system is to be able, following the establishment of quality work guidelines, to pro-actively work towards continuous improvement and to ensure the quality of their services and products. I S O 14 0 0 1 An environmental management system helps us to work systematically with our organisation’s environmental impact and to find cost-effective alternatives. This makes our business both environmentally friendly and more profitable. With the help of the ISO 14001 international standard for environmental management, the organisation is able to identify and systematically reduce its impact on the environment. The standard supports efforts to develop working methods in the field by, for example, reducing the use of energy and raw materials or the amount of waste and other emissions.
EU ECOLABEL EU Ecolabel functions in the same way as the Nordic Swan Label. It is a Type 1 environmental label. Products awarded the EU Ecolabel are reviewed as regards their life cycle from raw materials to waste. The products must fulfil strict environmental, function and quality requirements. These requirements are constantly updated and tightened. OEKO TE X OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 is an independent testing and certification system for raw, intermediate and finished textile products at all stages of production. Examples of products that can be certified are raw and coloured / processed yarns, raw and coloured / processed fabrics and knitting goods and finished articles (clothing of all kinds, home and domestic textiles, bed linen, terry goods, textile toys and much more). BCI BCI - Better Cotton Initiative is a holistic perspective on sustainable cotton production which ticks all of the boxes as regards sustainability: environmental, social and economic aspects. Each and every element – from the principles of production and criteria for systems of monitoring which document outcomes and consequences – combine to support the system and public confidence in Better Cotton and BCI. The system is designed to ensure the exchange of good practice and to encourage upscaling of collective measures aimed at producing better cotton as a sustainable flagship product.

Recently we have been concentrating on finding a processing method that aligns with the product itself. Vinga creates premium products, therefore it’s only natural that the processing methods should also be premium class. Our goal has been to identify a customization tool that would become an integral part of the final product, completing it and making it whole - even if the product is taken from our stock, you, as our customer, should be able to feel that your brand was simply meant to be on it. Speaking in more concrete terms, we have recently worked a lot with engraving – it is a fantastic tool that at the same time is one of the most sustainable labelling methods.
