o most of the world, they seemed as happy as ever: On March 18, Channing Tatum and his wife, Jenna Dewan Tatum, shared photos from a weekend of family fun on Instagram—complete with face painting done by their “fairy artist” daughter Everly, 4. Then on March 24, Everly attended her first public event with her parents—the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards, where she and her mum watched her dad get in a snowball fight with the audience. But in reality, the couple who fans watched fall in love onscreen in the hit 2006 dance movie Step Up were facing the end of their nearly nine-year marriage. “We have lovingly chosen to separate,” they announced in a joint statement on April 2. “We fell deeply in love so many years ago and have had a magical journey together, but love is a beautiful adventure that is taking us on different paths for now. Absolutely nothing has changed about how much we love one another— we will remain a family and united parents to our daughter, Everly. “There are no secrets nor salacious events at the root of our decision—just two best friends realising it’s time to take some space and help each other live the most joyous, fulfilled lives as possible.”

On a break from filming Logan Lucky, Tatum joined his family for a trip to an indoor play centre in Atlanta in 2016.

They met on the 2006 film Step Up. “I can’t wait to show our grandkids [the film],”Tatum said in 2012. “We’ll be able to say, ‘Without that kiss, y’all wouldn’t even be here!’”

The news came as a shock to fans for whom the Alabama-born star of Magic Mike and the Texas-raised World of Dance host, both 37, embodied Hollywood #couplegoals. Together for 12 years they combined superstar looks (he was People magazine’s 2012 Sexiest Man Alive) with down-to-earth charm, breaking into impromptu dance-offs at A-list events and openly talking about the work they put into their relationship. Now, multiple sources say they’ve been separated for months and Tatum has moved out of the family’s LA home. “This has been a long time coming. Like any marriage, they’ve had their ups and downs over the years but they really started to grow apart within the last year,” says a source close to the couple. “They honestly do still love each other. But that love turned more into a friendship rather than the passion they felt when they first met and fell in love. That almost made it harder for them to decide to separate because there weren’t any huge issues, and there’s not one person to point a finger at as the one who screwed up. They fell out of love, and it was a tough realisation to come to.” Adds another source close to their circle: “They weren’t on the same wavelength anymore and they quickly realised it. Different goals. Different ways of communicating. Both were really sad it didn’t end the way they thought it would but are happy it didn’t get contentious.” Dewan hinted at trouble in an interview for Health in March. “When people say you guys have such a perfect life I want to scream

A new book by Diana’s biographer sheds light on the former actress’s life before Prince Harry n a week when she was focused on n the finer points of her upcoming wedding to Prince Harry—the bride and groom announced details of the locally sourced flowers (including Princess Diana’s favourite white roses) for the big day—Meghan Markle’s life-before-Harry was spotlit in the frenzy of publicity surrounding a new book by biographer Andrew Morton. From the abrupt ending of her first marriage to film producer Trevor Engelson—Morton claims she posted her wedding and engagement rings back to him after she moved out—to her obsession with Princess Diana, Meghan’s past is dissected in Meghan: A Hollywood Princess. Excerpts published ahead of the biography’s April 12 release (April 19 in Australia) contain interviews with sources including former friends and classmates.

On the subject of her previous marriage to Engelson, Morton wrote that the relationship began to crumble when Meghan, now 36, was living in Toronto to film her hit series Suits, while her husband remained in Los Angeles. “A wealthy entrepreneur friend claimed … Meghan sent her wedding and engagement rings back to Trevor by registered post,” he wrote. “Another confirmed that the decision to end the marriage was made by Meghan and that it had come ‘totally out of the blue.’ ” While the book quotes former friends describing Meghan as “controlling,” “fastidious” and a “social climber,” A Hollywood Princess also references a smart, compassionate, caring woman, who looks out for others. Former classmate Elizabeth McCoy said Meghan would comfort her when she was picked on after having epileptic seizures. “According to

Morton, McCoy said Meghan “was cool and had cool things to say. I like being around her.” In a prescient twist, Morton, who famously penned the 1992 tell-all Diana: Her True Story—In Her Own Words, reveals that Meghan was fascinated by Princess Diana, claiming she was heartbroken when Diana died in a Paris car crash in 1997. “Meghan and her friends watched the funeral of Diana ... tears coursing down their cheeks,” writes Morton of the then 16-year-old, who 20 years later would marry her role model’s youngest son. Continues Morton: “According to family friends, she was intrigued by Diana, not just for her style, but for her independent humanitarian mission ... As friend Ninaki Priddy observed: ‘She was always fascinated by the Royal Family. She wants to be Princess Diana 2.0.’ ” •

Meghan and Prince Harry (on March 12) will wed at Windsor Castle on May 19.

“Comparisons with Diana are inevitable,” Morton says of Meghan (on March 23).

It’s extremely regrettable, I’m very sorry.” WHY DID CANDICE BLAME HERSELF FOR THE CHEATING SCANDAL? The former pro ironwoman turned model told News Corp: “I feel like it’s all my fault and it’s killing me—it’s absolutely killing me.” The mum-of-two’s comments stem from Warner’s off-field altercation with South African wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock during the First Test in Durban. The incident arose from an alleged sledge about Candice’s much-publicised drunken sexual encounter in a Sydney pub toilet with NRL star Sonny Bill Williams in 2007. Speaking about his motivation for cheating, Warner said: “It’s tough for me to talk about where my thought space was on that day, given the circumstances that happened in Durban.”

NG SCANDAL was caught playing foul, the explosive fallout continues

ARE THE THREE AUSTRALIANS APPEALING THEIR PUNISHMENTS? The legal team for Warner, whose 12-month playing ban will cost him millions in sponsorships and playing fees (including in lucrative 20/20 leagues), had at press time requested the transcripts from Cricket Australia’s interviews with players during their investigation. CA found that Warner developed

a plan to “artificially alter the condition of the ball” and instructed Bancroft to carry out the cheating using sandpaper (scuffing one side of a ball causes it to deviate in flight or “swing”). The request for the interviews suggests Warner’s lawyers are planning an appeal, which could include calling players to testify at a hearing. On April 3, Australian Cricketers’ Association president Greg Dyer implored CA to downgrade the sanctions: “We believe [the bans] are disproportionate.” SMITH AND BANCROFT ADMITTED TO THEIR ROLES IN THE SCANDAL. WHY DIDN’T WARNER? During what was perceived to be a heavily managed press conference on March 31, which

IS MANAGEMENT ALSO TO BLAME? Yes, according to former Australian captain Ian Chappell, who told Nine’s Sports Sunday that CA had failed to address cultural issues in the team, including its rampant sledging. “Why the hell are the administrators reactive all the time?” the commentator said. “Cricket administration, as long as I’ve been involved in the game, they wait until something really bad happens.” •

HAS AUSTRALIA CHEATED BEFORE? Not to the captain’s knowledge: “This is the first time I’ve seen this happen,” said Smith, who while not involved in the plan, had knowledge of it and failed to step in. His deputy was less definitive. “As I said before, I’m here to accept my responsibility for my part that I played in [the] Cape Town Test,” said Warner, who also failed to answer the question of whether anyone else in the team knew of the Cape Town plot.

DENT falls back to a familiar line after the show, she filed an amended lawsuit accusing Trump’s lawyer, Michael Cohen—who says he paid her $US130,000 days before the 2016 election to sign a nondisclosure agreement—of defaming her and breaking campaign-finance law. And Daniels’s “Make America Horny Again” strip routine is booked through August—earning her triple what she commanded before her name was linked to Trump in a Jan. 12 Wall Street Journal story. “She’s a great businesswoman,” says her booking agent, Danny Capozzi. “Everyone wants to book Stormy. It’s a question of who can afford her.” •

Adnan Syed, subject of hit 2014 podcast Serial, has been granted a retrial by a US appeals court. Convicted of the 1999 Baltimore murder of his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee, the 37-year-old has served 19 years of a life sentence. But the record-breaking podcast, downloaded more than 175 million times,“kind of shook the trees,” said Justin Brown, a lawyer for Syed. The Maryland Court of Special Appeals upheld Syed’s claim he received“ineffective assistance of counsel.”

Serial had revealed Syed’s lawyer Cristina Gutierrez, who has since died, failed to follow up with his classmate Asia McClain, who had written to Syed affirming that she’d seen him in the library at the time of the murder, potentially aiding his defence. “If we get back in court for a jury trial, we like our chances,” Brown said after the verdict. “We like them a lot. We think that we would win a trial.” Prosecutors could still further appeal the decision. •

Hae Min Lee was 18 when her body was found in Baltimore’s Leakin Park.

Syed (in 2016) was convicted of firstdegree murder, kidnapping, false imprisonment and robbery in 2000.

What is the challenge of being a woman on TV? We still get treated differently when it comes to how we look and what’s expected of us in that department. But if you’re female and you work on Australian TV you just have to work with that and not against that and work out—particularly if you’re a journalist—what actually matters. What needs to change? The balance at executive level, the gender balance, is still unequal and … That’s enough. What do you think of the #MeToo movement? It’s been a complete game changer, and bizarrely enough we have two serial sexual harassers to thank for that, Donald Trump and Harvey Weinstein! And the Harvey Weinsteins of this world can run but no longer hide. Finally women are not only finding a venue and an audience for their stories, they are being listened to and believed. And that’s something that even 12 months ago, we could not have imagined. Have you ever experienced sexual harassment or discrimination during your career? I have been incredibly blessed, I think, because I started in magazines working mostly with women. Certainly my immediate bosses were men, but I never had a problem. “When your kids are proud of you, that’s everything,” posted Wilkinson (with daughter Billi).

Did you have any great mentors, starting out? Ita Buttrose was very kind to me when I was brand new as the editor of Dolly ... As it turned out, her daughter Kate read the magazine and clearly Ita had been casting an eye across it which, you know, as a young magazine editor in the early ’80s, there was no higher compliment. And so I have always watched Ita and the grace and elegance that she has always displayed has been a real lesson to me. Any up-and-comers you particularly admire? I’ve always thought sports journalist and presenter Yvonne Sampson did a terrific job, but her recent interview with disgraced NRL star Matthew Lodge was exceptional. As were the entire female team at the desk of the new Fox Sports show League Life, when Yvonne, Lara Pitt, Jess Yates and Hannah Hollis grilled CEO Todd Greenberg over the NRL’s stance on the issue. It was no-holds-barred, and I found myself doing air punches throughout. I’m also a huge Celia Pacquola fan. Anywhere she appears, I’m watching! Has changing your TV roles been invigorating?

Completely, because I am no longer sleep-deprived and that’s made an enormous difference to me and everyone in my immediate circle of friends and family. It’s wonderful to be able to get out on the road and do longer-form journalism ... And everyone has been so ridiculously welcoming that I’m just so thrilled I made the change. Does criticism and scrutiny of your ratings at The Project upset you? In the end I just want to do good work and the rest will follow. There was always going to be a lot of scrutiny because my change from Channel Nine to Channel 10 drew a couple of headlines and so I expected that. But we’re bedding down particularly The Sunday Project at the moment and working out the best mix for the show and one of the wonderful things about going to The Project is the trust that people have in the journalism ... They trust us in my experience more than any other interview program on Australian television. That trust must feel like a huge privilege. You feel an incredible duty of care. And

journalists for the most part don’t get a great rap. We sit somewhere around real-estate agents and car salespeople on the list of 100 most or least trusted professions. So the fact so many people see us sitting a bit separate in that area is something we don’t take lightly. You look amazing, so relaxed and happy. What’s the secret? Thank you. I am so tired today! Look, I listened to my sweet mum—every time I say her name I well up, it still catches me—but my sweet mum ... gave me some great advice and that was, stay out of the sun. And I would say above everything else, staying out of the sun has probably done me the biggest favour in terms of ageing. I look after my skin. There’s no kind of magic formula, but I eat healthily, I don’t smoke, I rarely drink, I stay out of the sun and I use good Dr Spiller products. And I now finally get some sleep! Any other beauty tips? I married the right person! I think if you have a lot of laughter in your life and you’ve been fortunate enough to have good Who l 21

“Such a treat” to work with The Project’s Carrie Bickmore, posted Wilkinson on Feb. 1.

Yes, I will! I’m a mother of three and I don’t get to burn up the dance floor very often. With the kids leaving home, your nest must be almost empty. Look, on paper we’re empty nesters, but by God, they’re home a lot! They boomerang a lot and we love it when they come home. We miss them terribly. They are all great company and they are all complete individuals. We feel incredibly fortunate to have three such fine young adults to call our kids. Is there anything that particularly frustrates, angers or inspires you? That is such a great question! There is something I was talking to Billi about, and I’m not going to do it justice, I ought to write something down. But the whole Instagram age—and I love Instagram, but I make it a really positive space for people who follow me—but I think young women are in a very dangerous space right now and it’s partly the media’s fault, because the women that punch forward in so many spaces these days are not great role models. We don’t see enough good, strong role models for young women. Thank the lord for women like Turia Pitt and Celeste Barber and those fabulous Australian sportswomen in the AFL and in cricket and in soccer—the Matildas, what fine young women they are! As parents, we have to work hard to make sure those young women are the ones we present to our daughters as role models. I mean, our men’s Australian cricket team ... you know. Our politicians, they’re followers, not leaders. We have to navigate what is presented to

our children in a way you once didn’t have to because people in the headlines were people we really did look up to. But now, if you’re clickbait, that’s what kids see, so it’s never been more important that we are navigating that space for our kids and being proactive. You’ve got to work harder as a parent because the funnel through to our kids’ minds is a hard one to filter. It must have been a tough time, losing your mother on top of all the Today dramas. She was 89 so in many ways I’m so grateful to have had her for so long, and my mum was an absolute fighter. For the last 25 years there were about four occasions when we thought we were going to lose her. And they were all different health issues, but she fought on and came back. So we’d got to the point where we actually thought Mum was bulletproof. I grew up with a homemaker mum, and as proud as I know Mum was of me, she would always worry about, you know, “Are you sure you want to do this? Don’t keep taking on these big challenges!” So I kind of had to assure Mum that it was worth having a go, but she worried about me right to the very end. And in fact, Mum was the first person I went to visit after the whole Today show series of events unfolded, because Mum was really worried that I wasn’t going to be OK. How are you coping? Look, I miss her terribly, what can I say? But that’s life ... We’re all walking around with an invisible date on our forehead. And you never know when that date is going to be yours. So it’s just a reminder. Live every day with love and kindness and keep challenging yourself, keep growing. ■

people around you, you probably wear that on your face. How do you achieve balance and wellness? All of the above, and I try to get away for one week a year and do a complete detox. I always go to Gwinganna up in the hinterland in Queensland—no phones, no internet, no contact with the outside world, just a lot of fresh air and lying on my back, looking at the sky and thinking. These days we rarely have stillness in our lives. Was that how you decided to quit Today? [Laughs] No, no, it wasn’t. That situation kind of completely looked after itself. I didn’t have to be terribly proactive. That said, I did make some … I made some firm decisions I’m so thrilled I made. What’s your goal for the rest of 2018 and on? To do stories I’m really proud of. It’s funny but I’ve never really been a goals person. Life has been really kind to me and I feel blessed by the opportunities that have come my way. If I have any talent at all it’s probably the fact that I’ve been smart enough to recognise opportunities and then work hard and see what evolves. Is there anything we don’t know about you? I’m a very frustrated performance artist. I played Maria in The Sound of Music in third class and had huge aspirations of becoming a singer and I was a ballerina until the age of 14. And I still at every opportunity will get on a dance floor, and I’m usually the last to bed. This year I don’t have to get up and host breakfast TV, so God knows what time I’m going to go to bed after the Logies! Be careful—you’ll end up in gossip columns.

When she left Today, co-host Karl Stefanovic thanked her for, among other things, “the laughs, the sage advice, the calmness.”

has increased dramatically in recent years, as revealed in the resounding “Yes” vote in last year’s samesex marriage postal survey, but coming out as LGBTQ is still a profound and often traumatic experience. Here, people from all walks of life in Australia and the US share their emotional coming out stories. Reported by Jess Cagle, Tim Stack and Shannon Molloy

SPECIAL REPORT KEIYNAN LONSDALE PROFESSOR KERRYN PHELPS

>Actor, Love, Simon, 26 I went to a dance high school and most of the guys there either identified as gay or bisexual. I knew that I wasn’t straight, but I didn’t know if I was gay. I’d fallen in love with a friend, and I started hearing about rumours. It felt like everyone else was deciding [my sexuality] for me, and that was really scary. Then my best friend sat me down. He said, “You don’t have to be gay, you don’t have to be straight, you don’t have to be anything. Just be Keiynan. That’s it.” I started seeing a therapist; it was really helpful. Maybe about a month and a half [later], I was at a party, I just went out so dramatic and I addressed the room: “I’m not straight. I don’t really label myself as anything. I have been in love with guys and I have been in love with girls, and that’s me.” Everyone was so supportive. Some were extremely shocked and others were just like, “Whatever, cool.” Then I went back in the closet, and then had to come out publicly, but overall each time I’d come out, it was like I was giving myself that chance to grow. I don’t think that you can achieve your full sense of love and selfworth until you are proud of who you are.

>Doctor, advocate, 60 The day I came out in 1993 was also the day my marriage ended. I was married with two kids and living a pretty content life, but behind the scenes it wasn’t the case. For many people, coming out happens in stages and so it was the same for me. I came out on almost a daily basis for a long time after that. The big one, the public outing, was incredibly stressful. It was a very different time. It was 20 years ago, in February 1998. I had become president of the Australian Medical Association and there was a need to acknowledge it. I’d met [primaryschool teacher] Jackie and we were in love. Almost overnight, Jackie and I became political activists, championing equality and acceptance. By and large, it’s been well worth it. I cannot live any way other than with honesty and integrity. It is Phelps with unimaginable to wife Jackie Strickerme to have not Phelps. come out.

>Actress, 42 I’ve been coming out to friends and familyy since I was 18. I knew my truth—that I’m queer and bisexual. V, I felt ready When my career shifted from theatre to TV to portray a bisexual person’s journey I’d n never seen on TV before [on Grey’s Anatomy]. But I didn’tt know if I was ready to come out publicly. As the yea ars went by, I continued hearing about the violence pe erpetrated against us, including the Orlando shooting g at Pulse nightclub [in 2016, Omar Mateen killed 49 9 people at the gay nightspot]. I felt an urgency to sha are. There were a few folks in my life I wanted to tell b before this news came out. During movie night I pressed pause and shared my truth with the room. The Ramirez reaction went aged something like, about 9. “Cool. Can we go back to the movie now?”My friends and family accept me. I feel really blessed.

NO ROLE MODELS Growing up in Brisbane, Mitcham (below, competing at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014) had little guidance on how to deal with his sexuality: “There was no one for me to look up to, or whose path I could follow.”

DEAN SMITH >WA Senator, 48 It feels like a long time ago now. I came out in the early ’90s and it was a relatively easy experience for me in the grand scheme of things. I didn’t know I was gay through my teens—it was only in my early twenties when I realised. I was at dinner with my family one night and when my brother and sister left, I told my parents. It wasn’t planned; I was just overcome with emotion. It wasn’t for many, many months that I shared it with my brother and sister. Then I went off and lived in Britain for three years and it was a big part of becoming comfortable with being an openly

MATTHEW MITCHAM >Olympic champion diver, 30 I came out to my mum when I was about 15, but I probably told some of my friends before that. I don’t know if it was a huge shock for Mum—I did like to go to Spotlight to source material for my leotards and I recall doing a trampolining comp in a crushed velvet number with mauve diamantes on it. I became more comfortable with my identity the further I got through high school. I think by Year 11 or 12, I just wasn’t denying it anymore. Weirdly, all of the homophobic bullying kind of stopped after I owned it. I’d had a rough time before. I think when bullies smell weakness, they go after it. When I qualified for the Beijing Olympics [in 2008], I did a media interview and I blurted out that I lived with my boyfriend. The

[Fairfax] journalist was very respectful and asked if I wanted that in print. She asked me to think about it and so I did. There are implications for sportspeople. You’ve got to think about your commerciality—there’s always been a sense that gays don’t get endorsement deals. I figured it was better to be my true, authentic self. And so I told her to go ahead. Overwhelmingly, people were wonderful and supportive. When I was young, I didn’t really have any gay role models. I mean, in Beijing, I was the only [openly] gay man in the athlete’s village. Out of 11,000 athletes there were 10 lesbians and me. That’s it. Things have changed. At the last Games in Rio [in 2016], there were 42 openly LGBTI, and that’s so encouraging.

SPECIAL REPORT Senator Smith (in parliament on Nov. 28) was elected to the Senate in 2012.

GREG BERLANTI >Director-producer Love, Simon, 45 I was 24. It was the night of the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta when Muhammad Ali lit the torch. He really inspired courage. So I turned off the TV and told my parents, “For a long time, I’ve known I’m gay.” They were both shocked. For the first couple months, things were really raw. I wrote them a letter that said, “Yeah, I’m gay, but I’m also all these other things that you’ve already known.” When I wrote and directed the film The Broken Hearts Club in 2000, my parents threw a premiere party at a gay bar. I finally felt like not only were they accepting of me being gay, but they wouldn’t have changed it.

gay man. People were generally supportive. I can’t remember any serious difficulties—not that people confronted me with. I think coming out early has made it easy for me to live an authentic life. Certainly as a parliamentarian, knowing that people are aware of my sexuality made it easier. I was the first openly gay man in the federal Liberal Party. I’ve had letters and emails from people saying they’re encouraged to see an openly gay man doing the things he wants to. If someone is gay, I hope it doesn’t stop them from dreaming the dreams and living the life they want to.

I was raised in a Hasidic family [an ultra-orthodox Jewish sect] in Monsey, New York state. When I was 18, I was at summer camp and my father called me to come home and meet somebody. Six months later we were married. After a year I spoke to my mom and said I wasn’t happy. She encouraged me to see a Hasidic therapist. He said, “Do you think you might be a lesbian?” I responded, “What’s that?” He explained, and there was this huge sense of relief. When I was 25 and my children were 1, 3 and 5, I got divorced. I was no longer going to live a lie. When I came out in my community about my sexuality, all hell broke loose. I lost my job and the support of my family and friends. My exhusband took me to court to fight me for custody of our children. I lost at first, but this past August I won the appeal. It’s been a whirlwind of new experiences and beautiful bonding time since. This to me is a life worth living. g Weisberger at age 6.

At the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, there was all this anti-LGBT legislation in place, and I really wanted to open up. Right when the gamess were over, I came out to my best friend [fellow skier Bobby Brown] and his girlfriend. I was crying, but it made me feel so good, so real, and I’d never, ever felt that. I came out publicly in 2015 on the cover of ESPN the Magazine, hoping it could help anyone who was struggling. Then this year at the Olympics, a kiss [with boyfriend Matt Wilkas] was broadcast internationally. If I had known it was on-camera, it would have been a way better kiss! But I’m so glad it was, because as a kid, seeing a kiss between two guys at the Olympics would have changed the course of my life. I would have had my heart opened a lot earlier.

SPECIAL REPORT ZANN MICHAELS >Brisbane public servant, 35 My coming out didn’t happen all in one go. I grew up in a small country town in a very strict Mormon family. At church, homosexuality was discussed but not in a positive way. I went to uni and this girl and I made a play. It sort of forced me to confront the reality that I’m a lesbian. It was the first true thing I’d felt in my life. I was 19. I’d been taking steps back from the church for a while but then, it felt like it wasn’t a place for me anymore. Once one or two people knew about me, it spread like wildfire. I actually didn’t tell many people because I was so nervous. I figured when I told my parents, I wouldn’t have a relationship with them anymore so I just decided I wouldn’t bring it up. I was living in London when I was 23 and my mum emailed me one day—my sister had told her. It was really tough. And our relationship has always been strained since. My wife Shannon and I have been together 10 years now and we have two daughters. Starting a family bridged a bit of a gap. I think them witnessing our happy and loving family allowed us all to exist relatively harmoniously. But the marriage vote last year put a lot of pressure on that. I didn’t ask how they were voting and if it was No, I just preferred not to know. But there were posts on Facebook that were very hurtful and damaging, and very hard to reconcile with. I thought we were past it. But all I can do is live my truth. I think I’ve brought much more positivity into this world by being my genuine self that I otherwise would have.

I grew up in Katherine in the Northern Territory from birth until 2015, when I moved to Canberra. I came out just before my 21st birthday. I made sure all of my family knew first, then I did the typical millennial thing and put it on Facebook. It was in the wake of the shooting at the Pulse gay club in Orlando. I wrote: “In honour of those who I feel were my brothers and sisters, I will never hide again.” And so I was out. I was very, very anxious beforehand. I didn’t know what to expect and how the family would react. Everyone was very accepting. Mum said she already knew. There were lots of tears and laughing. There are a few people I’ve lost touch with since then, I suspect because of coming out. A lot of the boys I used to hang out with—do sport with, go fishing or swimming with and things like that. That’s been tough. I’m encouraged that people are keen to help their loved ones through the comingout process. Family is everything. I talk to Mum constantly—she’s always there to run things by, to give me advice. It’s been a pretty crazy experience and a big couple of years. I’m now an ambassador for R U OK? Day and I’ve done a lot of work with them around mental health in both the Indigenous and LGBTI communities. I’m passionate about helping people who are struggling to find where they belong. ■

s the former owner of a Bundaberg butcher’s shop that had been in his family for three generations, Bruce Saunders was among the Queensland city’s most-treasured blokes. Each day, the twice married 54-year-old crossed paths with just about everyone in his local community and, according to stepson Liam Rodgers, he was always generous with his time. “If we walked down the street together we’d have to add an extra half-hour because everyone wanted to stop and say hi to him,” Liam, 19, tells WHO. “He was loved. Everyone liked Bruce, he always had a smile, he always lent a helping hand. He was so trusting.” Nearly five months after Saunders’s horrific death, police are investigating if that trusting nature led to his murder. In what at first appeared to be an accident on Nov. 12 last year,

police said Saunders was killed after becoming trapped in an active industrial woodchipper on a property in Goomboorian, nearly 200km north of Brisbane, while helping two men clear a driveway for a recently widowed woman. But since then police have launched a homicide investigation, with reports citing a possible love triangle as the motive for the murder of the much-loved butcher. “It was awful when it happened, even when we thought it was an accident—it was just awful on all of us,” says Liam, who is the son of Saunders’s second wife, Bernadette Rodgers, with whom Saunders had remained in contact. “But now that there’s a police investigation it’s so hard to think about. How could someone do that?” It’s the question at the heart of the Queensland Police probe. On the day of his death, Saunders, who sold his butcher’s

Graham, who now reportedly lives in Saunders’s former Nambour home, could not be reached by WHO for comment. “Today is the saddest day to say my goodbyes to a beautiful man Bruce,” she wrote in a Dec. 1 post on a funeral service website. “He treated me like gold. His love to me was bigger than anything in this world. I’m so lost without you, Bruce. Conners win the lottery in season 9 before turning the whole thing into a bizarre fantasy in the now-infamous finale, accelerated the show’s demise. But those days, she claims, are long gone. (After igniting a firestorm of criticism during the holidays when she wrote a series of tweets in support of President Donald Trump, Barr announced that she was retiring from social media for a while.) “I don’t want to fight no more,” Barr tells WHO. “I don’t have nothing to prove. I already proved it. I totally missed the process of collaborating and having my crew and my team and making my vision happen or whatever cornball shit they say. I just want it to be fun and a smooth ride.” That describes the show’s revival in a nutshell. Even former show-runner Bruce Helford, whom Barr inexplicably fired during season 5, returned to executive-produce the new iteration along with Werner, Gilbert, Barr, Tony Hernandez and Whitney Cummings. “I had seen her years before when she gave me a big hug and said, ‘Oh, yeah, I fired you. You are the best writer we ever had. Sorry about that,’ ” remembers Helford. Once the wheeling and dealing to find a network was out of the way, the writers got busy righting a harebrained wrong, bringing back Dan from the dead after Barr killed him off from a heart attack in the finale. “A lot of the finale was a dream, so that helped us a lot,” explains Helford. “Certain things that happened during the dream don’t exist as part of the actual history of the show.” Other than the absence of Jerry Garcia Conner from season 8 (who is tangentially addressed in the first episode), everything else would remain largely status quo, including the opening title sequence around the

BLAKE LIVELY Meet the men behind Blake Lively’s muted makeup and side-swept hair

W

HO caught up with Blake Lively’s dream team: hairstylist Rod Ortega and makeup artist Kristofer Buckle.

Can you explain Blake’s look, Rod? Because it was New York Fashion Week, we wanted something polished, so we went for smooth and sleek. Her hair looks so soft, too. What are your secrets? Try rosewater spray. I spritzed it on her wet hair from roots to

60 l Who

ends to condition it and add volume, then blew it out in large sections using a 1.5-inch round brush. How did you create the subtle curl? I used a 1.5-inch barrel curling iron from mid-shaft to 2 inches [5cm] before her ends, for a beautiful bend. What inspired the makeup look, Kristofer? That day, it was all about the outfit. Her candy-apple-red coat was so vibrant, we didn’t

want anything to compete with it, so we went with nude tones. How does one get that Blake Lively glow? I used highlighter on the high points of her cheekbones and down her nose. Then I added a touch of blush across her cheeks to create a wash of colour. And on her lips? I tapped a mauvey pink lipstick on her lips to liven them up—her last name is Lively!

“Thanking my luc ky today…” posted Liv stars for worked with Orteg ely, who has for more than 10 a and Buckle years.

GOLD COAST GLAM This holiday hotspot has had a glamorous transformation

N

o longer is the Gold Coast just geared to theme park-loving families and overseas sunseekers. Hip cutting-edge cuisine, breweries and cool markets are now synonymous with the GC, as well as a new luxury hotel. Whether you’re visiting to see our team win Gold during the Commonwealth Games or planning a stay at any time, here’s where to head for a cool weekend away.

66 l Who

DINE WITH THE A-LIST Want to spot a star? Just visit one of the renowned reestaurants on the GC. It’s truly a foodie mecca. Book in for the fivee-course tasting menu at Little Truffle at Mermaid Beach—it’ss said Hugh Jackman enjoys dining here. Meanwhile, over in i Broadbeach grab some brekkie and a coffee at Elk Esspresso, which recently moved from its original premises to th he Oasis Shopping Centre—we know Orlando Bloom was a reggular when he was on the GC. Blake Lively had the best cofffee of her life at No Name Lane, also in Broadbeach. “I have to say it on record, the cappuccinos were amazing but the cold brew—Oh, my gosh,” the star revealed on a radio show. THE COMMONWEALTH GAMES ARE ON NOW, VIEW THE BEST OF THE GOLD COAST AND WATCH THE EVENTS ON CHANNEL SEVEN.

Beautiful beaches, fine dining, luxury hotels, art, music and world heritage listed parks, the Gold Coast has it all.

A SIX-STAR STAY Want to be treated like royalty with butler service, pampering, and rooftop restaurant and bar offering vistas across the coast? Book into one of the 57 brand-new luxury suites at The Darling, part of the new look Star Gold Coast. The highlight? The infinity pool perched 67 metres above ground and five metres beyond the side of the tower. The refurbished Star Grand is also on site. star.com.au/goldcoast destinationgoldcoast.com

ARTS AND CRAFT BREWERIES Currumbin is known for its (impressive) wildlife sanctuary. But now it’s so much more. What used to be an industrial estate in Currumbin has been transformed into a haven for hipsters. First stop needs to be a brew tasting at Balter Brewing Company. The brainchild of recently retired pro-surfer Mick Fanning and his mates, here the vibe is laid-back and the beer delicious. Afterwards head to view galleries and listen to live music at Dust Temple, a creative space where you can also grab a coffee.

GET BACK TO NATURE

MARVELLOUS MARKETS

Many A-lister’s such as Blake Lively, Hugh Jackman and Orlando Bloom spend time on the Gold Coast during filming commitments.

There’s good reason why Miami Marketta is so lauded. It’s here that you can sample exceptional street food, including Mexican, Japanese, Greek and vegetarian, and then shop for fashion, have a drink and watch live entertainment. Want more market action? Time your GC stay for the 1st or 3rd Sunday of the month to check out some of Australia’s best emerging designers at the Village Markets. Held in Burleigh Heads, there’s also vintage clothing to rummage through, pop-ups and handcrafted furniture. thevillagemarkets.co; miamimarketta.com Who l 67

What’s a trip to the Gold Coast without a walk along that famous stretch of sand? There is in fact 57 kilometres of beach to discover with some of the best surf breaks, including Kelly Slater’s fave, Kirra, and Greenmount Point. And just beyond the highrises, restaurants and cafes is world heritage-listed rainforest, so finish your day with a stroll through the hinterland of Lamington National Park or Springbook National Park to view tumbling waterfalls and colourful birdlife.

Try these tips to“release the psychological handbrake.”

FIND TRUE MOTIVATION The best motivation for getting through tough times is internal motivation — the desire to do it for you.

CHOOSE PROGRESS OVER PERFECTION Progress makes you feel successful and motivates you to do more. It’s an upward spiral. Progress is achievable. It feels so much better than the recurrent disappointment of perfectionism. And best of all, it gets you to your goal.

DON’T PLAY THE MARTYR GAME Martyrs put everyone and everything before themselves. It makes losing weight almost impossible. Martyrdom gives you the perfect excuse to dodge exercise. You can say, “I’m going to make myself the priority, I’m going to make the time, I’m going to do this for myself and the people I care about.”

SKIN FOOD

Try these three ingredients to make you your skin glow are the t best-known source of zzinc, which helps heal dam maged skin and acne. It alsso helps protect from fre ee-radicals due to sun exposure.

e are lucky enough to live in a society with an abundance of delicious, nutritious and downright indulgent foods. And while this is a blessing, it can also be a curse for those trying to take charge of their diet and keep control of their cravings. Most diets dictate what is on the good and bad list, but don’t explain how to deal with the urges and temptations that lead to that extra helping, the whole packet of biscuits or the 3 PM blow-out. In her book How to Be Thin in a World of Chocolate, author Michele Connolly has drawn on her psychology experience to outline her anti-misery, anti-fad mindset strategies for achieving and maintaining a healthy weight. Along with diet and exercise, Connolly says if you want to lose weight, you need to get your mind working for you.

Robinson delivers a star-making turn as smart, sweet Simon.

Clueless: Garner and Duhamel.

PICK OF THE WEEK

MOVIE

LOVE, SIMON

STARRING: Nick Robinson, Katherine Langford

Fans of 1980s teen classics will recognise the ingredients: a hero who feels like an outsider, a hilariously quirky group of friends, an irritating nemesis, the utterly relatable moments that leave you ugly-crying. But Love, Simon is the first major-studio movie in which the hero is gay. Simon Spier (Nick Robinson) is keeping his sexuality a secret from his friends and parents (Jennifer Garner and Josh Duhamel) when he strikes up an online romance with a high-school classmate, whose identity he doesn’t know. As he tiptoes into first love, another kid finds out his secret

and attempts to blackmail him. With a talented young cast— led by the charming Robinson and Langford (13 Reasons Why) as his female bestie—Simon, based on the 2015 young adult bestseller Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda, always feels humane and grounded in reality. You won’t begrudge it a few touches of Hollywood slickness—who doesn’t want Simon to get the happy ending he deserves? Watch for a particularly touching scene with Robinson and Garner late in the film. That’s the moment when you’ll need the tissues. (Out now)

MOVIE “Friends” with Anne-Marie

EARLYMAN VOICED BY: Eddie Redmayne

Dug (Redmayne) is stuck in the Stone Age, or maybe even before. He and his primitive cave-dwelling friends haven’t even figured out how to hunt rabbits when their land is invaded by an army from a new wave of civilisation, the Bronze Age. Vastly superior, the Bronzers have wheels, masseurs, a sports venue and that greatest of inventions, sliced bread. Can Dug’s skill set evolve fast enough to avoid going the way of the dinosaur? THE BEST IN ENTERTAINMENT

Boarding House Reach

After taking a rootsy turn on 2014’s Lazaretto, the garage-rock kingpin has exploded his sound yet again on Boarding House Reach, the weirdest and wildest release of his two decades in music. The old-timey closer “Humoresque” derives from a musical manuscript that gangster Al Capone penned while in Alcatraz. But White is still a six-string wizard, as when he steps forward and shreds on the menacing “Respect Commander”. (Out now) Boarding House Reach is the 12-time Grammy Award winner’s third solo album.

BOOK

THE DEATH OF STALIN Directed by Veep creator Armando Iannucci, this bitingly good satire is about the struggle at the top after Joseph Stalin, having destroyed millions of lives, joined his victims in the ground. The tone isn’t too dissimilar from Veep’s: the insults never let up as these communists scuttle around like bureaucratic cockroaches. They’re free from Stalin’s boot but not each other. (Out now)

REDEMPTION POINT Candice Fox With Harlan Coben and Lee Child among her fans, you know this Australian author will have you turning the pages of her pacy follow-up to 2017’s chilling Crimson Lake long into the (very dark) night. Disgraced detective Ted Conkaffey— haunted by the unsolved abduction of a girl—teams up with private-eye Amanda Pharrell after a double murder at a remote roadhouse in Queensland. Fox, who collaborated with James Patterson last year, has earned her crown as the queen of the creepily compulsive thriller. (Out now)

STREAMING GUIDE HOMEMADE ROSTERED ON STARRING: Paul Moore, Doug Lyons It won a cohort of fans on YouTube— some 250 million views—now this little Aussie beauty is the first local independent online series to be picked up by Netflix. Set in an outlet of an eerily familiar electronics chain and based on writer-director Ryan Chamley’s real-life experiences, the show picks up

on the dichotomy of those who work in retail: the ones who live for it, and the ones who are just making ends meet till they can make a go of the career they really want. Luckily for Chamley, with this coup it seems his staff-pass wearing days are behind him. (Streaming now on Netflix)

Electric dreams

BINGE MOZARTIN THEJUNGLE STARRING: Lola Kirke, Gael Garcia Bernal Season 4 begins with oboist Hailey (Kirke) cautiously moving into a deeper romantic relationship with conductor Rodrigo (García Bernal). But why would you keep the tempo slow with someone as effortlessly, guilelessly sexy as Bernal? His accented English turns every line (“They say 4 AM sex is very incredible!”) into a come-on. The music’s not bad either: Episode 2 features bass baritone Bryn Terfel’s recording of one of Ralph Vaughan Williams’s “Songs of Travel”. You float off to a happy place. Meg, 26, however, was shocked that Jeremy wanted to give it another go, conceding to WHO, “I didn’t think he still thought about me.” And while she is keen to try again and doesn’t think he will flee this time around, she concedes she has her reservations. “My biggest fear would be that Jeremy would hurt me again,” she says.

After both of their marriages ended in divorce, Peter decided to try his luck with Diane once more, 28 years after they last saw each other in person. “From the first moment our eyes met

in a New Orleans pub way back in 1988, it was her radiant smile that simply grabbed me and drew me in inexorably,” Peter tells WHO. Adds Diane, “When we were dating, there was no internet and phone calls were very expensive. It was hard wanting to be with each other.” ■ By Alexandra McCarthy

If you are changing jobs or moving home, you know you are leaving the past behind and entering a new future. On the other hand, events in early-to-mid April could change your horizons in unexpected ways, although the reason will be the same—you will be moving onwards and upwards in the aftermath. For more, phone 1902 261 655.

It may seem as though nothing much is going on but not only could you be unaware of other people’s plans and projects, but you may have hidden a few issues from yourself. Nothing is happening by chance at the moment: Pluto and Jupiter combine to bring an element of destiny into the mix. For more, phone 1902 261 655.

Once you’ve overcome your fears about commitment and plunged in head first, you may be surprised how well you take to it. Whether making a large purchase or reaching a serious decision involving finances, this is no time for half-measures: you’re either all in or all out. And the same advice applies to an afair of the heart. For more, phone 1902 261 655.

Try as you might to circumnavigate an issue, you’re going to have to tackle it head on. Now is the time to decide which is the correct way forward and, as with so many difficult decisions, the hard answer is the right one. It may also be a case of discarding some baggage, whether in the literal or figurative sense. For more, phone 1902 261 655.

When the irresistible force meets the immovable object, the result is never good: someone’s going to get hurt. With this in mind, should a large spanner enter the works, stand back and wait for the dust to settle. There is certainly passion in these stars, which can send a new relationship into orbit, but it can also burn bridges. For more, phone 1902 261 655.

Despite your usual excellent judgement, occasionally events can blind you to the reality, and certainly to the positive aspects of a situation. A last-minute change could make an event, not ruin it, and what may seem like a blow to your hopes and plans could actually be the very thing to get you on course for lasting success. Transformation is the planetary brief, and if you’re planning to move house, knock a wall down or you’re expecting changes to the family unit, you’re in sync with your stars. However, if you’re looking forward to a chilled week with nothing more to worry about than your next cold beer, you’re in for a surprise. For more, phone 1902 261 655.

Scorpios rarely do anything by halves, and in an astroscape like this, you’ll be even more prone to extremes. If there’s something or someone you want, you’ll do anything and everything to achieve your ends, and while this can be a hugely successful policy, sometimes you sustain serious bruises. Think twice. For more, phone 1902 261 655.

Some Sagittarians will make a financial killing this week, but others could find themselves up against it—outgoings will exceed incomings leading to a cash crisis. S SCENEA FROM LIFE

JACKIE GILLIES The Real Housewives of Melbourne star and psychic, 37, tells WHO’s Cynthia Wang about wanting kids and taking her motivational spirit live to fans across Australia on her national Shine It Up tour (April 20–June 3). Why go on the road?

SUPPORTIVE SOULMATE Jackie married Silverchair drummer Ben Gillies, 38, in 2010. “I thank the universe and God every day for that man,” she says.

This is something that I’ve been wanting to do for many, many years. I think it’s that natural progression, the next step since I have been doing professional psychic readings well before Real Housewives of Melbourne started. It’s really about empowerment and getting men and women all around the world inspired. What will your event be like?

On this Shine It Up tour, I show people how to listen to signs and their intuition to create a full life. I will be sharing stories. It’s Tony Robbins meets Ellen meets Oprah meets John Edward. It’s not just psychic readings, although if the angels guide me that will happen. Have you been a go-getter throughout your life?

I’m a manifester. I have been creating vision boards from the age of 17. Everything on those vision boards today I have, from relationships to houses, all these things that I’ve wanted. I believe in the power of energy and your thoughts. After I’m a Celebrity, you said your thoughts had turned to having a family with your husband, Ben Gillies?

LADIES WHO LUNCH

INSTAGRAM (3); BOT TOM LEFT: NET WORK TEN

Gillies (second from left) has been an original member of The Real Housewives of Melbourne since the show premiered in 2014.

Ben wanted children seven years ago. I was the one holding back out of fear of, or a hope of, being the best mother I can be. I have a career, I work every day, but I also wanted to be there for my children, raise them and not feel guilty, so I was going through all those thoughts that were rushing through my head. Now I just want to do it and get on with it because I am feeling older and I am 37 and I don’t want to leave it for too much later because the older you get, the harder it does get. So watch this space, baby!

TASTING SOMETHING NEW Gillies survived 13 tucker trials (and met fellow medium John Edward) in her stint on this year’s I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here!

Fans got a peek at a Jackie show during RHOM.

MARIO DEDIVANOVIC Kim Kardashian West’s main makeup guru, 34, a judge on beauty competition Glam Masters (Wednesdays at 8.30 PM on Style), puts on a good face with WHO’s Alexandra McCarthy. This is your first reality show. Kim said, “Be yourself and say exactly what comes to your mind.” That was helpful because I tried not to think of anything else except what I would naturally say to someone if I were with them one-on-one. Why is makeup having such a moment right now? Social media. Once people started learning the tricks

of the trade, it became incredibly popular. Where do you find inspiration? I’m really into interior design, décor, architecture, fabrics, and outside stuff like flowers and trees. Also, certain products come out, new shades and textures, and that’s what really inspires me. What’s one trend you never want to see come back? I never say never because there’s certain looks that I thought were ridiculous in the ’80s and ’90s, but I kind of really love them now. OK, wait, if I had to choose one—the glitter cut crease.

The tragic life of veteran model Carrie Spencer (above, far right) was too briefly explored in the short-lived Melrose Place spin-off. Says Moss, “In this business, there can be a lot of hype, and hype means nothing.”

THE MATRIX (1999) Moss was absolutely badass as hacker Trinity in the Wachowskis’ sci-fi epic. “I’ve realised how much of what the directors created is actually our reality right now,” she says. “I’m still quoting The Matrix myself.”

W

hen we last clapped eyes on Victorian vineyard manager Jarrod Woodgate, he was a red-faced, snot-sniffing mess on The Bachelorette and we all worried about him hanging a hard left straight into the ocean after Sophie Monk shattered his heart like she was throwing an empty rosé bottle into the recycling bin. Back then, his fragility was his downfall. After scoring the first date with Sophie, he mistook her genuine friendliness and fine-tuned social skills for sure signs she was madly in love with him. He did for pot plants what Fatal Attraction did for pet rabbits and we watched through parted fingers. What he needed, ultimately, was to calm down. Throwing open the pointless gates on his way into Bachelor in Paradise, Woodgate finds himself faced with an alternate reality. Keira is keen. The date with Ali went well. There are a few points to take from this: First of all, being dumped isn’t the end of the world. Even the fact that Jarrod is willing to put himself out there again—on TV no less!— while the audience is still trying to get the sound of his sobs out of their heads is admirable. Secondly, it seems that the ladies like a comeback story—not to mention a famous face. Being Sophie’s second choice doesn’t seem to be doing Jarrod any harm. And lastly, perhaps Jarrod has matured. Maybe he watched himself and has made a few tweaks. Like a fine wine, he’s improving with age. Now, he just needs to chill.
