Artist Statement
Vinicius Lima was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1982. He holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree in Architecture and Urban Design from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from where he graduated in 2005. Right after his undergraduate studies, Vinicius was accepted into the Three-dimensional design program at the University Of Iowa School Of Art and Art History, where he received his M.A. degree and is currently registered and attending as a M.F.A. candidate whose graduation is anticipated for May 2009. Vinicius Lima develops his creative research based on the combination of the elementary parts of shape creation (lines, surfaces, solids, color, texture, light and shadow) and the latest in Computer Technology to design functional and sculptural pieces, having his main focus in furniture design. Having computer-aided design (CAD) technology as his main design venue, Vinicius explores his designs using computer modeling, CNC technology and lately, Virtual Reality, developing a process that has given him the opportunity to exhibit his work in Brazil, United States, France and Turkey and to receive a couple of national and international awards in the architecture, furniture and interior design industries.
As an architect and designer, I consider the formal elements that involve the production of a design piece my major subject matter. Lines, surfaces, solids and color are some of many reasons why objects produce a statement and what makes people appreciate a work of work and its visual aesthetic qualities. I started appreciating those elements in my early childhood with the building blocks I had as toys. Those pieces developed in me a kin eye for three-dimensional design. It is of my interest the power they have to transform and manipulate space when interacting with their surroundings. The interest in building three-dimensional objects added to an interest in planning and structure led me to enroll in an architecture program. During those years, I learned that the character and visual quality should be emphasized in order to produce effective three-dimensional experiences. When creating something, I find myself interacting with shapes in order to accomplish this goal. I add to or subtract from them until I define a shape which has features that I judge capable of creating a surprised reaction from a viewer. This process starts with a geometric shape. Geometric shapes carry in them an amount of simplicity, precision and perfection that allow me build complexity upon without taking away their fundamental essence. The general theme of my work therefore lies on basic design principles that create bold statements based on their literal presence. Fundamental concepts such as lines, modularity and color are manipulated into tactile models, sketches or as of lately, CAD models. While developing an idea, I do not constrain myself to a specific way of approaching the problem. I keep my mind and my eyes open to new experimentation all the time. I am constantly sketching, making new paper models or modeling using computer software, which enables me analyze, study and decide whether it will be worth pursuing a concept or not. Throughout this time, many variations and studies for the same solution are made in order to find the best solution to answer the problem. I manipulate its shape, study the possibility of different color schemes, and test different materials and also different manufacturing processes. As an architect and designer, I understand the role technology plays in our constantly growing society and how it affects all realms, including the creative one. New technological developments have allowed artists and designers take their work to unexpected horizons. Ideas that before were not possible through traditional methods or sometimes not even thought of can now be brought into reality through the use of Computer-Aided Design technologies such as Computer Numeric Control (CNC), Rapid Prototyping (RP) and Virtual Reality (VR). The interest in explore the fundamental concepts in an unexpected fashion developed an interest in me for this topic and led me to pair the traditional concepts I was used to practice with sketches and paper models with the latest in computer-aided design (CAD) technology. The use of technology in my design process enables me embrace tradition and innovation when I combine classical features of design with computer applications and computer-controlled methods.

I started working with CAD technology in 2001 while still in architecture school using drafting, modeling and page layout applications. In 2006, while studying three-dimensional Design at the University of Iowa, I started working with CNC technology to produce the Geometra Fruit Bowl. CNC technology allows the transfer of electronic files to have 2D objects cut using laser or a plasma torch or 3D objects milled. In this learning experience, research played a major role and became part of my design method. Whenever I incorporate a new method of production into my work, other research topics are addressed as well. While experimenting for the Geometra Fruit Bowl, aside from knowing how to draft the pattern to be plasma-cut, I had to research the proper metal, proper gauge but most importantly it was necessary to develop a process to have a piece CNC-cut. It was when I had to understand a little about the mechanics of the process, how the machine works, and especially how the software that runs it translates and interprets my design and performs its task. In 2006, I also started incorporating 3D Computer Modeling and rapid Prototyping in my design process for my Master of Arts thesis
research and carried it to my Master of Fine Arts thesis research. It also became necessary to research the nature of the process and how my design can make full advantage of it. Computer Modeling allows me produce new design forms that are easily generated on the computer and Rapid Prototyping is responsible for bringing these ideas to the real and tactile world through 3D printing. In 2007, as a result for my interest in interacting with my computer modeled objects, I decided to use this application to design interiors and experiment those spaces using Virtual Reality (VR). Virtual Reality made the interaction with my work an experience like I have not tried up to that point. I was able to walk through my designs and also incorporate sound and video into it, creating four-dimensional design works of art. My first produced experience using VR was the Bookstore Booth project. To achieve that, research and learning on VR software and hardware was necessary but also built up a library of knowledge I am now able to carry for other endeavors I might tackle in the future. Currently I have been using all aforementioned technologies to design furniture,

They are capable of making the interaction with the viewer a more personal experience. The possibility to have my work interact with the human being rather than just in a viewer mode is what drives me towards functional art and design. When you try on a piece of furniture or walk into a space, your tastes and preferences are part of your judgment criteria at a different level. A chair is chosen because its height is appropriate; it supports your back and arms properly, among other judgment items. The appreciation goes then from purely visual to a point where a viewer engages with the piece and considers it based on himself, developing a different communication between the work and its appraiser. I have been researching furniture pieces using linear parts. I aim to explore the power a
simple linear element has to evolve into a 3d piece through gradation and transformation in size and shape. I design them using a computer drafting software, then model them in a modeling application and visualize them using the VR software and hardware. After analyzing and fixing problems that are noticed, the files will be sent to a CNC manufacturer and be cut out of its material and its parts will be assembled into the final design. The pieces will be built out of certified wood, avoiding the degradation of our natural environment. As a designer, I believe my products can help bring awareness of what our society has been producing and by incorporating good materials with technology in the manufacturing process, I am helping promote its possibilities and also its affordability for the production of pieces due to waste reduction and its more precise quality.

Interior Design 2008 Computer-Aided Design Virtual Reality 42’(W) x 160’(D) x 50’(H)
Wire Restaurant Wire is a design for a new restaurant in which the building virtually disappears. The structure loses its boundaries with the outside, becoming completely transparent, from floor to ceilings, including furniture, silverware and even the bathroom. In that way, what really stands out are the clients, who go to this fine establishment to see and to be seen by the people inside and outside. The shape of the massing, with very sharp edges and glazed from head to toe, creates a unique appearance in its surroundings. The building has three and a half levels, having the restaurant housed in the first two. The third level and the mezanin house a night club, where people can go dancing and appreciate the night scenery and lights. At the top, a lounge area is suitable for watching the sunrise or the sunset.

Bookstore Booth This is a space designed for a bookstore booth at a book fair. The main publication from the publisher was a book on color theory and the client requested a color palette to be emphasized. I chose the three primary colors (cyan, magenta and yellow) due to their capability to blend into other hues with the use of light and transparency. The inspiration for the design came from paint tubes which are very generic and plain on its outside but once they are open, the magic of color is revealed. Therefore every space is inside a container which has its own color. Every object and furniture also matches the same color of the container creating monochromatic rooms within a multicolored space. The signage was designed after the paint labels showing the function of each container. A sculptural yellow element works as a sculptural element to call the visitor’s attention among all the other options available at the event.

Office for an Art Collector This is a space designed for an art and design object collector. Her preferences and careful eye help as the concept for a space where the classic meets the contemporary, the comfortable meets the functional, international meets regionalist. The color palette uses black, white, red and some green accents, which provides elegance and energy.

Cardboard Pavillion The enormous cardboard bales that are sitting in the recycling centers make me think they will never be used anymore and may stay in the environment without having a specific purpose or destination. As a result, I decided to design a pavilion that would be built only using recycled cardboard. It is lightweight, low cost and also transportable because of its assembling process. All parts of it are made out of cardboard and minimal fixings. A series of portal frames are connected by secondary pieces. In the end, every surface receives a coat of clear plastic resin to protect from water damage. The design was made using Computer-Aided Design technology. The final piece is also featured in a walk-through video format.

Art Installation 2007 Computer-Aided Design

Virtual Landscape Installation Designed as a Virtual Reality experience, this project aimed to depict my personal impression of my home country and my cultural habits. My take on this project involves the great landscape of the Brazilian territory. In this study, huge organic shapes play the roles of mountains, and the space in between them, where cities settled in the beginning of the history, are where a viewer can walk and experiment these virtual mountains. A play in scale makes the person think about that
territory and how to experiment it. Moreover, added to these organic forms, colored lights were added to the space, creating a colorful atmosphere that evokes the native Brazilians ornamentation, the animal species, the flowers, the colors of the carnival parade and other popular events in Brazil, making a strong image of an amazing and yet intriguing country.
Whale Bench Whale has a shape that comes from a linear element that gradually changes its shape and produces in the end a bench-form frame for seating. All of its pieces are made out of CNC-cut wood and wood spacers glued together. Its hollowed shape reveals its inside construction and brings out a different point of view.

Edro Chair Edro’s shape came from the manipulation of a cubic mesh. By pushing parts of a cubic object in, the seat and backrest are formed, unveiling a chair that is suitable for residential, commercial or corporate use. Edro is produced out of steel rods and can be painted or chrome-plated.

Bacana Modular System Bacana is a modular system in which the parts can be arranged in different ways and various colors. The units are put together and can create room dividers, shelving units for books or CDs, coffee tables, stools and wine bottle racks. The use of plastic allows its production by the industry, lowering the production costs.

Bloca Room Divider The Bloca room divider’s geometric design started form a linear element that gradually changes and defines its shape. It is a furniture piece suitable for residential areas but can also be used in commercial and office spaces. Besides that, its horizontal surfaces can work as shelves for small objects. Bloca is built out of environmentally friendly wood and has a stained finish but can also be lacquered or painted. The spacers are made out of stainless steel.
Quadrata Lamp Quadrata is a table lamp based on the shape of a cube. The manipulation of the shape created one where two corners of the object move in one direction and the other two move in the opposite one. The difference this piece has when compared to other lamps is the fact that the light was supposed to come out from the edges of the piece, creating almost a lit spatial frame.

Unflatware Flatware Set The unflatware set is designed from a unbroken sheet of metal that is folded and formed to create the different elements. The elements have the fold in three different spots so that they can nest into each other and be easily packed in a smaller volume. The working prototype was made out of polished aluminum but the final pieces can also be fabricated in polished steel or silver and can also have colors, allowing great flexibility for its design. Its simple shape enables the sheets to be laser cut and then formed using industrial dyes which make the set easy to be massproduced.
Swoop Ring The swoop ring was designed with the goal to obtain the most from its fabrication process - lost mold casting. Its shape then is one in which the elements flow continuously from one to the other, creating a organic and voluptuous shape. The dimensions of the ring make it into a wearable sculpture rather than a regular piece of jewelry. It was designed to be placed in the index finger of one’s hands, since it has a cut that reveals partially the skin and the body of the person, in a different interaction between jewelry and user. The ring is made out of polished silver, which reflects in all directions its lines and surfaces, adding interest to its final shape.

Iowa Architect Magazine Being the theme of the competition, the word inside was the main idea for this graphic project. My take on the word inside started on a strong visual element that would draw you eye into the magazine. My answer to this problem was a series of circles that were nested into each other, creating an optical illusion of depth and perspective, two main items in architecture design. Like lenses that are looking at you and calling your attention, those shapes are repeated eventually throughout the pages of the bound periodical. The color palette chosen was the red, black and white for its elegance and high-class look. Also, the red, as an accent hue, helps calling people’s attention when the magazine is at a newsstand or at the library shelves.

Best from Brazil CD This is the redesign of a Bossa Nova Collection CD. The calmness and mellowness of the tracks of the albums were the main concept for the whole design. The design then makes full use of the negative space, becoming airy and light throughout the brochures so that the listener feels the soothing effects of the song. The imagery used is scenes from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and other takes on Brazilian culture and nature. The color scheme used applies a gold shade of yellow and a shade of blue, the colors of the Brazilian sunset and the waves of the beaches of the Brazilian coast. The packaging designed for it also makes it unique, making the collection an object of desire and elegance. The packaging should use recycled cardstock in its composition.

The ability that basic and simple elements have as space transformers is the main focus of this series. Having linear parts as the portrayed subject in all of the images, the intention was to reveal the beautiful spatial meshes and effects that were sometimes created without any awareness or concern in regards to aesthetic values but merely functional ones. Concentrating on areas which were built instead of natural, the idea of beauty is discussed and makes viewers wonder if there is beauty everywhere a human being puts his hands or not and if every person is capable to perceive this hidden beauty behind its main functional purpose.

Manipulated Negative Series Whenever one presents a photograph, the viewer can recognize familiar elements that bring memories, stories, impressions. The familiarity of shapes and arrangements with our 3D space trapped in that 2D frame allows a conversation between our brain and the image, enabling us to have our interpretation. In this series of images, I intended to explore how we would recognize familiar images of everyday life, including personal objects or spaces. The negative was manipulated by folding the roll in random places, creating different focal lengths and an unfamiliar image to the viewer, who is then asked to put that image together to remember its place and its time.
