You are in for a special experience, whether you are stepping out onto the course in Biloela, Charleville, Quilpie, Blackall, Hughenden or Longreach.

Queensland’s Outback is one of Australia’s most beautiful regions, and the Year of Outback Tourism continues to showcase its many experiences, opportunities to explore.

At this time, we are all mindful of the economic challenges of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

The Queensland Government continues to work with Queenslanders throughout the State so we can unite and recover for Queensland jobs.

We have strengthened our support for the tourism industry because it is important to Outback Queensland and to the

Queensland economy. Tourism is a major industry for Queensland, and a strong contributor for Outback Queensland’s regional economy.

That is why the Queensland Government is delighted to work with Golf Australia. Together, we are supporting Queenslanders and creating jobs for Queenslanders.

More than 50 events and experiences have been supported by the Queensland Government’s Year of Outback Tourism Events Program, and these emphasise the outstanding choice offered

by Outback Queensland, for Queenslanders and for visitors to our great State.

We look forward to presenting the Outback Queensland Masters (OQM) again in 2021 with our Strategic Partner, Tourism & Events Queensland. It is Australia’s largest prize opportunity for an amateur golfer with a chance to win a million dollars with a holein-one.

The OQM is an opportunity to showcase the character and friendliness that Outback Queensland Golf Clubs are famous for in communities including Biloela, Charleville, Quilpie, Blackall, Hughenden, culminating in Longreach.

GIVING BACK TO LOCAL COMMUNITIES FREE JUNIOR GOLF CLINICS To encourage young people in Outback Queensland, Junior Clinics with PGA Pro, Darren Weatherall are aimed at providing young people who may be interested in trying their hand at golf for the first time or those up and coming future golf champions.

The Junior Clinics are FREE and aimed at local youth in

the communities where the Outback Queensland Masters is touring, including Biloela, Charleville, Quilpie, Blackall, Hughenden and Longreach.

“We’re bringing this opportunity for young people in Outback Queensland. It’s a great way for young people to get first hand knowledge and skills in the game of golf,” said Darren Weatherall, Certified PGA Professional.

“Throughout the journey you’ll also be able to get free advice and tips from me on how to improve your game.”

BILOELA SAT 19 JUNE BUSBY MAROU Tom Busby (hailing from Queensland) and Jeremy Marou (from Torres Strait Islands) have gained the reputation as one of Australia’s leading live bands known for their distinctly Australian storytelling and gifted musicianship of these two lifelong mates.

ERROL GRAY Coined the “Backyard Balladeer” Errol Gray will have you in stitches with his irreverent songs, stories and politically incorrect Aussie sense of humour. His cultural classics include Working for Centrelink.

BLACKALL SAT 10 JULY JESSIE LLOYD Jessie Lloyd is an award winning performer touring globally and taking audiences on a profoundly-moving musical journey into the depth and diversity of Australia’s cultural identity.

MURRAY HARTIN The bloke from Moree, Murray Hartin, performs in rapid-fire, rhyming recitals, covering the perils of yoga to his ANZAC tribute, The Slouch Hat. He creates vivid and often hilarious mental images that will stay with you forever.

HUGHENDEN. SAT 17 JULY THE JILLAROOS The unlikely singing trio known as The Jillaroos has been wooing locals across outback Western Queensland in Australia since their first performance at the Ettamogah Pub in 1857 NEIL MCARTHUR Neil has been on the road for over twenty years.

LONGREACH FRI 23 JULY RHONDA BURCHMORE Rhonda Burchmore has endeared herself into the hearts of all Australians. Whether you’ve seen her at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival or I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here this is a cabaret experience not to be missed.

NOEL STALLARD Australian Bush Laureate Award winner Noel Stallard OAM is one of Australia’s finest bush poets.

He is a performance champion and we can’t wait to see what trails he takes us down with his love of Australian heritage poetry.

Population: 654 Quilpie is home to ‘The Jewel of the Outback’, the beautiful boulder opal, and you see the opal in all its glory at St. Finbarr’s Church with the spectacular Opal Altar or try your luck at the free opal fossicking area 2km west of town. Explore the Shire Museum, Military History Museum, Rail Museum and Regional Gallery with free Wi-Fi at the Quilpie Visitor Information Centre.

Enjoy sunset from Baldy Top Lookout. A 10 minute walk to the top and you will be rewarded with complete panoramic views sure to take your breath away. Book ahead with a selection of motel, hotel and caravan park accommodation.

BLACKALL .......................................................................................................................... Population: 950 Home of the Black Stump, Blackall literally grew on the sheep’s back and was a thriving outback township in the early years. Blade shearer Jack Howe put Blackall on the map in 1892 when he set a world record by shearing 321 sheep in 7 hours and 40 minutes. Experience the region’s wool heritage at the Historic Blackall Woolscour.

The town boasts an outdoor gallery of public artworks created by local and well renowned artists.

After a hard day of golf you can rest, relax and revive in the natural artesian waters at the Blackall Aquatic Centre’s thermal spa and swimming pool.

HUGHENDEN ......................................................................................................................Population: 1,180 Hughenden is the most northerly destination on the Outback Queensland Masters. In town, say g’day to ‘Hughie’, the sevenmetre-tall Muttaburrasaurus and the impressive fossil collection at the Flinders Discovery Centre.

The district has four national parks, mountainous volcanic basalt country, sweeping black soil plains and rich fossil and dinosaur areas.

Just outside Hughenden, Mount Walker rises out of the flat black soil plains, providing great views across town and around the district.

Further afield is the spectacular Porcupine Gorge National Park, often referred to as Australia’s ‘Little Grand Canyon’.

LONGREACH ......................................................................................................................Population: 3,000 Longreach is the Million Dollar Hole-in-One destination, and last stop on the 2021 Outback Queensland Masters journey.

Located in the heart of Outback Queensland, the town pays tribute to Australia’s pioneers. Here you can ride in a galloping Cobb & Co stagecoach, gently cruise along the Thomson River followed by dinner and then enjoy a show on the river bank. Paying tribute to the stories and legends of the Outback, attractions include the Qantas Founders Museum, the Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame and the School of the Air. Accommodation includes a wide number of motels and motor inns, retreats, hotel and caravan parks. It is height of season during winter, so book ahead!

GOLF LINGO Playing with people who know golf and you don’t? Feeling that you might get left behind with the golf lingo? Get worded-up before you head off into the Outback and be in-the-know-like-a-pro with this handy glossary.

Airswing: A swing of your club, which misses connecting with the ball, still counts as a stroke (points to your friends for not laughing out loud).

Angle of Approach (or Attack): In which the relative angle of your clubhead approaches the ball at impact.

Birdie: One stroke under par for the hole.

Bogey: A score of one over par on a hole.

Bunker: A hollow comprised of sand or grass or both that exists as an obstacle and/or hazard.

Caddie: A person hired to carry clubs and provide other assistance (AKA –your best mate, family member or significant other).

Chip: A short shot usually around the green where the ball lifts off the ground and then runs along the ground for a short distance.

Course Rating: A number, usually the same or one or two shots above or below the par of the course, which indicates the difficulty of the course.

Your handicap is based on the course rating.

Double Bogey: A score of two over par on a hole.

Double Eagle: A score of three under par on a hole.

Eagle: A score of two under par on a hole.

Handicap: A number allocated to you that reflects your golfing ability. The lower the handicap of a player, the better the player.

Honour: The right of the player to hit off first, usually the person with the lowest score on the previous hole.

Level-Par: When you have a score of even par.

Lie: Where the ball has come to rest. It can also relate to the club as in the angle of the club face to the club shaft.

Marker: A person who keeps your score.

Markers: Used to show where you are allowed to hit your golf ball from, off the tee.

Par: The score an accomplished player is expected to make on a hole, either a three, four or five.

If a hole is a par three this means you have three hits of the ball to get it in the hole.

Stroke: The times you hit a ball while playing on each hole (remember, less is more).

Stroke Play: It’s a form of play for a competition based on the cumulative number of strokes taken, either over one round or several.

Teeing off: Term for when you have taken your stance and are ready to commence play.

Teeing Ground: The area in which each hole begins, indicated by two markers.

OUTBACK QUEENSLAND MASTERS ROAD TRIP ITINERARY Make your way to the friendly town of Biloela for the first leg of the 2021 Outback Queensland Masters. If you’re arriving early to Biloela, make the most of your time by exploring the Queensland Heritage Park, Lake Callide and the town’s surrounding natural wonders.

BILOELA TO CARNARVON GORGE (318 kilometres)

Begin your journey to Charleville, your next tee-off location, with an early start along the Leichhardt Way to the town of Banana. You won’t find any yellow coloured fruit at this small farming town junction, instead meet the life-sized statue of Banana the Bullock who stands proudly in the town. Passing through Rolleston, follow the Carnarvon Highway taking you to Carnarvon National Park. In this Queensland central highland’s oasis, experience towering sandstone cliffs, ancient rainforest, diverse flora and fauna, and ancient indigenous art galleries.

CARNARVON GORGE TO MITCHELL (332 kilometres) Today, trip towards Mitchell.

Next stop is Roma. Known for its cattle, Roma is home to the largest cattle selling facility in the Southern Hemisphere where over 400,000 cattle a year are seen through here.

Delve deep into Roma’s oil history by spending time at the Big Rig Oil Patch Museum. By afternoon, take the short drive to Mitchell along the Warrego 28

Way, home to explorer and bush ranger stories. Finish your day with a refreshing soak in the mineralised thermal waters at the Mitchell Great Artesian Spa. Stay 1 night

MITCHELL TO CHARLEVILLE (178 kilometres) Continue your journey along the Warrego Way to Charleville, where the town makes up for its size with big experiences. While in Charleville, get up close and personal with one of Australia’s

most endangered species at the Bilby Experience and view the outback clear night skies like never before at a Night Telescope Observatory Session at the Cosmos Centre. If time permits in your schedule, book in for the Top-Secret WWII USAAF History Tour, to explore the uncovered sites and delve into Charleville’s war history.

It’s time to make tracks to Cunnamulla this morning, taking the Matilda Way south. Stop halfway on your journey in the town of Wyandra, once a major water stop for steam engines heading through to Charleville.

Arrive in Cunnamulla home to natural outback beauty and classic country hospitality, perched on the Warrego River.

The Cunnamulla Fella statue is hard to miss, paying tribute to region’s pastoral heritage and popularised tune by Slim Dusty, the ‘Cunnamulla Fella’.

CUNNAMULLA TO THARGOMINDAH (197 kilometres) Travel to Eulo, known as the ‘Montville of the Outback’, 69 kilometres along the Adventure Way. Slide into an outdoor bath at the famed artesian mud baths, pick up leather handcrafted goods or sample the Eulo Queen Hotel’s signature dish for lunch. Continue west for Thargomindah, home to Australia’s first hydro-electric power plant. Take the opportunity to visit their Hydro Power Plant Complex for a demonstration or unwind after the day’s drive along the Bulloo River Walk and Heritage Walk.

THARGOMINDAH TO QUILPIE (195 kilometres) This morning travel along the Quilpie Thargomindah Road to Quilpie via Toompine, known as ‘The Pub with No Town’.

By late afternoon, head 12 kilometres west of the town to the spectacular red Windorah Sandhills to toast a sunset to remember.

YARAKA TO TAMBO (262 kilometres)

WINDORAH TO YARAKA (171 Kilometres) Today you’ll be doing some travelling off the bitumen.

Track back 22 kilometres from Windorah to take the Hammond Downs Road before continuing onto the Yaraka Retreat Road.

Sit back and keep your camera ready for a land of contrasts and watch the desert country change to black soil plains and mulga country. Make sure to arrive in Yaraka in time to take the sealed 8 kilometre

From the rocky outcrops of Yaraka, today make your way through prime sheep and cattle country to Tambo. As you arrive in Tambo you’ll pass beautiful heritage buildings and native bottle tree lined streets. The town is famous for their locally crafted sheepskin bears, so pop into the workshop where over 47,000 bears have been made.

In the evening head on to the Royal Carrangarra Hotel and place a bet on one of Ben’s champion chickens.

TAMBO TO BLACKALL (101 kilometres) Take your time today and enjoy the slow pace of an outback morning to track your way back to Blackall. A major attraction, the Historic Blackall Woolscour is living history and a direct physical link to Australia’s pioneering era.

It’s the only fully intact steam powered wool-washing plant in Australia where you can see the engine in action on a guided tour.

BARCALDINE TO HUGHENDEN (362 kilometres) Making your way to Hughenden, first make tracks to Aramac along the Barcaldine Aramac Road. Follow the route to Torrens Creek to meet the Overlander’s Way. Stop in at the Exchange Hotel for a break or continue onto Prairie before rolling into Hughenden. Located on the shoreline

of the prehistoric inland sea, Hughenden makes up one third of Australia’s Dinosaur Trail and is home to ‘Hughie’ the life-size replica of the first entire dinosaur skeleton found in Australia. From Hughenden taking a day trip to Porcupine Gorge National Park, known as ‘Australia’s Mini Grand Canyon’ is a must.

HUGHENDEN TO WINTON (225 kilometres) Today, take the two and a half hour journey south-west to Winton, known as the ‘Dinosaur Capital of Australia’ and the home of Waltzing Matilda. Check out the world’s largest collection of Australian dinosaur fossils at the Australian Age of Dinosaurs Museum or if time permits take a full day tour to the Dinosaur Stampede at Lark Quarry Conservation Park.

The Waltzing Matilda Centre is the first museum in the world to be dedicated to a song, honouring the unofficial anthem penned in 1895 not far from Winton at Dagworth Station.

Book in advance to spend your evening cruising down the Thomson River on sunset complete with dinner and entertainment, a must-do while in Longreach.

When you’re not on the green, soak up the history and heritage with visits to the Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame and Qantas Founders Museum. Take a tour through one of the largest classrooms in the world at the School of Distance Education or experience the thrill of a Cobb and Co. ride.
