LOCAL CHARACTERS Meet Ollie, our favourite Brahman bullock and owner, John Hawkes. Hawkes a talented stockman, entertainer and musician, nurtured Ollie since he was orphaned at just two days old. Their bond is evident, reflecting the care Hawkes has invested.

Unveiling the past Welcome to the Powerhouse & Historical Museum. The former Longreach Power House Generating Complex is a testament to local ingenuity, boasting 10 massive engines installed between 1948 and 1971. This site played a crucial role in revolutionizing Australia’s electrical industry with its unique gas production system. The town’s local history is also on display and housed within the former office of the Central West Regional Electricity Board, including Nogo Cottage, a window into family life in Western Queensland from 1938-1950. These displays are thanks to the team at the Longreach Archival group dedicated to preserving the heritage of our town through the collection, cataloging and maintenance of our history. Enjoy a complimentary coffee or tea and stroll through the Centenary Sensory Garden - a multi-faceted marvel, and living tribute with zones for Tranquility, where hues and scents blend harmoniously. Seating areas in Zone 2 offering serene reflections, and a Play Area in Zone 3, adorned with grevilleas, beckons both children and adults, take your shoes off and relax on the lawned area. The Botanic Walkway, a 2.5km stretch from Edkins Park to the Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame, is a masterpiece by landscape architect Lawrie Smith. Native plants of the Mitchell Grass Downs bioregion seamlessly blend with water-wise techniques, creating an oasis in the arid western Queensland landscape. The adventure continues with the Iningai Nature Reserve, a hidden gem and haven for birdlife – a twitcher’s paradise. A tribute to the Indigenous Iningai Traditional Owners, this reserve boasts three walking tracks: Coolibah loop along Watyakan Creek, the Wilga loop in the Mitchell Grass Downs region, a natural grassland wonder of global significance, and the Gidyea track featuring open downs country and rocky creek crossings, surrounded by stands of Gidyea.

UNVEILING HISTORY’S EPITAPHS: Discover our past, overlooking Iningai Nature Reserve on the edge of town lies the Longreach cemetery – a captivating repository of stories etched in stone. Here pioneers, heroes, and characters of the past find their eternal rest. From ANZACS to Aboriginal trackers, lost graves and many more. This sacred ground holds the memories of many. OUR STORY BEGINS where all good stories begin, sitting around the kitchen table, catching up with family and friends, and sharing the day that was or the day to come. Sometimes we even exaggerate with theatrical flair or deliver a well-versed story with a touch of comedic expression that makes the story sound new and refreshed. It matters not that the story has been told and retold, what matters, is it is remembered; after all, history is nothing if not a collection of moments captured in a story. And so we share our story with you. The story of the ‘Great Brown Land’; its people, its landscapes, its animals, and its environment. That is our story, a moment captured, a time remembered, a people and place that is like no other. Indigenous, pastoralists, explorers, men, women and children, animals, and environment co-existing, succeeding, failing, living, and dying, they all have a story to tell, and it is our great honour to be the custodians of these stories and share them with our visitors.

Hear first-hand the recollections from our extensive oral history collection, transcribed diary entries from those that cut a living from a harsh environment, the changing seasons that brought heartbreak or great wealth and success. “It was the bush that built the cities”, is not a throwaway line uttered once and forgotten; it is steeped in truth, and it is captured in Australia’s history books forever. Living in the Australian bush is not always easy, even today the challenges of distance and environment continue to shape the people who call it home. The stories captured and retold at the Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame are our country’s history. Today we capture stories for tomorrow’s history, a generational conversation continues where the names and times may be different but where the stories remain as compelling and inspirational as they have always been. city charm in the bush THE BRANCH CAFÉ, Bar and Restaurant is owned and operated by Brecken and Joanne Curtis and is a passion project for the region, aiming to curate a little bit of city charm in the bush. After moving to Longreach in 2005, high school sweethearts—Bank Manager Brecken, wife Jo, a Registered Nurse—opened the aptly named Branch in 2021 after falling in love with the historical charm of the old Commercial Bank of Australia building, which still houses the original safe. Following an extensive renovation prior to opening, The Branch’s fit out pays homage to its art deco roots and showcases the buildings rich history of servicing Longreach as a bank, stock and station agency, dental clinic, government office and retail shop over the decades. Located in the centre of Longreach’s Eagle Street precinct, The Branch showcases the best of the Central West, utilizing local produce and quality ingredients from a variety of suppliers across Longreach and the surrounding regions. Situated in the heart of grazing country, the Longreach region is home to some of the most well-known, multi-generational pastoral properties in Queensland, so the focus on providing guests with authentic, top-quality tastes of the region is top of mind for Brecken, Jo, and Head Chef, Nevashin Naidu. Relocating to Longreach in 2019, South African native, Nevashin—Chef V—is the ultimate culinary carnivore. Deeply passionate about the art of producing top quality, protein-based dishes, V is meticulous about the selection and preparation of local beef, lamb and pork and constantly seeks out new techniques and flavours, enhancing the dining experience of each guest at The Branch.

V’s passion, shared by Brecken and Jo, extends beyond the kitchen, with the Curtis family concurrently operating their own sheep property, Draughthorse, 50km out of Longreach. Home to organic Australian White / Dorper cross sheep, grazing on open Mitchell Grass Downs, Draughthorse sheep serve to supply The Branch under a ‘farm to table’ model allowing Brecken and Jo full control over the entire farming process, including animal welfare and sustainability. By incorporating as much local and seasonal produce as possible into their menu’s, Brecken and Jo have created a venue for both locals and visitors alike, which reflects their love for the region and aims to give back to a community that has given them, and their four young children, so much. Love of community is an enormous driving force behind The Branch, which thrives on providing exceptional food, outstanding coffee and perfectly curated cocktails, all whilst maintaining the old-fashioned country hospitality integral to the Outback spirit. EXPERIENCE THE CAPTIVATING masterpiece “THE SPIRITS OF THE PUMPKINS DESCENDED INTO THE HEAVENS” by internationally acclaimed artist Yayoi Kusama, now showcased at the Qantas Founders Art Gallery. Entry is free. Renowned as ‘the world’s most popular artist,’ Yayoi Kusama from Japan (born 1929) is celebrated for her immersive installations featuring polka dots and mirrors. Throughout her illustrious 60-year career, she has explored vast notions of space and the human form, employing recurring motifs such as dots, eyes, nets, and pumpkins to delve into repetition and craft sensory encounters evoking the infinite. Her 2017 installation “THE SPIRITS OF THE PUMPKINS DESCENDED INTO THE HEAVENS” features a dynamic yellow room adorned with black polka dots of various sizes. At its heart lies a mirrored enclosure housing numerous illuminated pumpkin sculptures, visible through windows. These pumpkins, endlessly reflected within the internal mirrors, are also resplendent in yellow, adorned with dots. The mesmerizing interplay of dots, mirrors, and pumpkins conjures an optical illusion, immersing viewers in a sensation of boundless space and colour.

Today, she is a majestic landmark on the bank of the Thomson where she is being restored. Stage 1 of the restoration will take her to a point where guests can get aboard to stand on her deck. education in the outback LONGREACH SCHOOL OF THE AIR welcomes you to come share the story of our students, staff and families and visit one of the world’s largest classrooms. Twice daily from Monday to Friday, March through to October (excluding public holidays), you can get an insight into how we overcome distance and bring school and learning alive for our students who are spread throughout Western Queensland, Australia and internationally. Our experienced tour guides will give you a glimpse into the history of distance education and the evolution of lesson delivery and learning over time, sharing a few genuine recollections of their days in the schoolroom. We’d love to share the vastness of our classrooms with you and show you firsthand what learning looks like for our staff, through a purpose-built glass walled studio, and for our families, in their homes, school rooms and paddocks across the outback. You’ll hear from our students and get an insight into what their lives are like and revel in its uniqueness and their achievements, talents and creativity. You will experience a teacher’s perspective and find out what makes our school so special and why the connections between home and school are legendary. national parks LOCHERN, A PRISTINE sanctuary boasting an impressive 20 kilometres of Thomson River frontage. The park spans an expansive 24,300 hectares, encompassing a diverse range of habitats, including numerous lagoons and waterholes that serve as havens for a myriad of bird species and other wildlife. The resilient people of Lochern have harmonized with the rhythmic cycles of wet and dry seasons. First Nations communities thrived on the abundant offerings of the land, capitalizing on its seasonal transformations. Meanwhile, pastoralists strategically constructed dams with extended wings and stone-pitched ends, capturing precious rainwater to endure the arid spells. Ingeniously, hen-houses and motor rooms were elevated to stay above the fluctuating water levels. Venturing into the contrasting landscapes of Welford reveals the breathtaking beauty of the Barcoo River. Coolibah-lined waters and grey alluvial channels meander through Mitchell grass plains and arid mulga woodlands, creating a stunning mosaic. The 124,000-hectare park is adorned with golden-green spinifex and the stark white trunks of ghost gums atop vibrant red sand dunes. The majestic river red gums stand sentinel along the Barcoo River, forming the southern boundary and providing crucial habitats for diverse wildlife, including the vulnerable yellow-footed rock-wallaby. The First Nations people of the region share an enduring connection with the Barcoo River, and the park holds significant cultural heritage sites. Among its historical treasures is a pisé homestead constructed in 1882, a unique example of rammed earth architecture. Although not open to the public, it stands as a testament to the rich history of the area. The Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame is Australia’s premier outback heritage institution. Bringing to life the rugged landscape of the outback, its galleries tell the incredible and often unknown stories of everyday people – the unsung heroes of the bush. Our story begins where all good stories begin, sitting around the kitchen table, catching up with family and friends, and sharing the day that was or the day to come. It matters not that the story has been told and retold, what matters, is it is remembered, after all, history is nothing if not a collection of moments captured in a story. Since its opening in 1988, the Hall of Fame has played host to over two million visitors, providing each one with a spectacular outback experience! In 2019, ASHOF undertook a $15 million redevelopment of the main building and exhibition spaces, which transformed the visitor experience. By getting away from the traditional museum model of display cases and wall text, the galleries were brought to life with rich sound and visual media. Visitors now embark on an experiential journey of discovery deep into the heart of the outback, told through the voices of the people who make it real. The centerpiece is The Hugh, a location-aware immersive audio experience that’s integrated with the exhibits. Once the headphones are on, it’s like stepping inside a film and the galleries become a stage for the stories to unfold as visitors explore.

We are prone to a number of natural disaster events including flooding, severe storms, bush fires and heatwaves. Our communities are resilient and we are known for having wide open skies, breathtaking scenery, beautiful landscapes and a warm, dry climate. The grazing of cattle, sheep and more recently goats are the key industries throughout the Council area. Tourism is a major industry during the cooler months with people visiting from all areas of Australia and overseas. The Landsborough and Capricorn Highways traverse the area and the Thomson and Barcoo Rivers flow through the area to form Coopers Creek which makes its way to Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre.

Prepared communities take better care of themselves before, during and after disaster events which eases the burden on response and recovery agencies. The Wellshot Centre tells the story of one of Australia’s greatest sheep stations, Wellshot Station. The centre traces the history and development of the station from its early settlement, how it was formed and how people lived and worked there. Wellshot Station gained a world record in 1892 for shearing the largest number of sheep off the same property in one season – 425,000 sheep!.

Just outside the Wellshot Hotel you’ll spot the mind-blowing lineup a Machinery Mile. Inspect the handywork of our Aussie tradesmen and appreciate the enormous skill required to build these prized machines back in the day. Eyeball the 1917 Ruston Proctor Tractor, one of only three left in the world, and a big Excavator driven by a threehorse powered steam engine. This outdoor museum is definitely one of a kind.

The Wellshot Hotel, originally situated in Barcaldine until its relocation in 1890, remains the quintessential Outback Queensland pub and the thriving heart of the community. Tracey Hatch, the dynamic publican, has transformed this historic hotel into a vibrant meeting place, welcoming travelers, truckies, and locals alike. Oma Waterhole is one of many permanent waterholes fed by the much-celebrated Barcoo River. It’s a favourite recreation spot for lovers of camping, fishing and most things water related. There’s even a boat ramp. Overnight campers appreciate access to the hot showers and toilet facilities. Find it on the Isisford Yaraka River Road, just 16km from Isisford.

There’s something about Isisford and the Outer Barcoo. It’s been the inspiration for many an Australian poet including Banjo Paterson. If you are interested in stories of how places came to be by default, then plan a visit to Whitman’s Museum. A stroll around town and you will see many of the original buildings still stand today. It’s easy to picture life in more gentler times as you stroll Isisford’s heritage.

Outer Barcoo Interpretation Centre Did you know that the evolutionary ancestor of all crocodilians lived 95-98 million years ago? Visit the Outer Barcoo Interpretation Centre to view a life-sized replica of ‘Isisfordia Duncani’; it predates the first recorded appearance of true crocodiles by over 30 million years!

SNAG A YELLOWBELLY

The Isisford District Hospital original building was built in 1892, a Female ward 1909 was added, then in 1924 a Maternity ward. In the 1950’s a Morgue and operating theatre and in 1961 a kitchen extension. The Queensland Cabinet decided that in 1970 the Hospital would operate as an outpatients’ Centre until 2011. Hospital tours will be available on Friday Mornings from April to the end of July. $5.00 Morning tea and gold coin donation for tour. For other times contact 0427 588 117.

It’s hard to miss the Outback’s biggest Yellowbelly glistening in the sunlight as you arrive into town. It measures 12 metres long and stands a lofty five metres high. Look closely and you’ll discover windmill parts, corrugated iron and thousands of pop rivets gathered from surrounding properties. This impressive metal art sculpture is a celebration of the Yellowbelly Fishing Competition held annually on the last weekend of July, which draws masses of keen anglers from across the country.

The first fossils of Isisfordia were found in the mid-1990s by the former Deputy Mayor of Isisford, Ian Duncan, after whom the species is named. Researchers claim that Isisfordia was only a metre long and would have lived in a swampy river delta that opened into a large inland sea. There’s plenty more to the story along with other fossil discoveries, so be sure to visit the centre when you’re in town.

Emmet

Travel with a friend to Emmet and you will instantly double the population. That’s right, there are currently two residents calling Emmet home. IT WAS ONCE a thriving town built around a railway siding with a population of 30. Emmet became the second ‘water stop’ for steam trains travelling west from Blackall. As with many ‘water stops’ along new railways, it grew into a new settlement. Before you leave town (and half the population) read the town’s full ‘boom and bust’ story inside the revamped railway station and old store.

JUMP INTO NATURE Drive 70km from Emmet and you’ll enter Idalia National Park, home to the yellow-footed rock-wallaby. The park is one of only seven small pockets of land in Australia where you’re likely to spot this largest of wallabies. It’s also the most colourful—brown and yellow ringed tail, yellow paws, white underbelly and white stripes on its flanks, hips and cheeks. If you get too close, expect to see the wallaby thump its feet to warn others. Keen twitchers will be excited to learn that a number of rare bird species call Idalia home including plum-headed finches, eastern yellow robins and speckled warblers.

WALK AND EXPLORE Pack your day pack and your walking poles if you’re eager to delve deeper into this 144,000-hectare park. Visitors to Idalia can choose from five different walking trails graded from easy to difficult. Enjoy wide-sweeping views from Emmet Pocket Lookout, visit an old mustering camp and stockyards or walk to the wave-shaped cliff overhang. Camping is permitted at Monks Tank camping area.

It’s a good idea to calculate travel times and distances between stops, even preparing alternate routes, especially when travelling during Australia’s summer (Nov – Apr) when rain and storms can impede travel plans.

ROAD CONDITIONS Contact the local Visitor Information Centre in the town that you are visiting, call 13 19 40 or check the Government Traffic and Travel Information website qldtrafic.qld.gov.au for current road conditions.

STAY IN CONTACT If you’re travelling remotely it’s always a good idea to let someone know where you’re going, and when you plan to get there. Keeping in touch is not as hard as you might think, via phone or radio.

CARAVANS If you are a member of a ‘caravanning convoy’, don’t travel too close together. Other road users will become frustrated if they are unable to overtake safely. The law requires caravans and other large vehicles, outside a built-up area, leave at least 60m between each other. The distance is 200m in a road train area.

HEAVY VEHICLES & ROAD TRAINS Care should be taken when passing and overtaking road trains and heavy vehicles, including other caravans. Ensure you have a clear line of sight, allow plenty of room and be prepared for vehicles to move a little from side to side as you overtake. If a road train is approaching to overtake you, move as far to the left as possible and stop if necessary to allow it to overtake safely.

Yaraka Three hours drive south-west of Longreach along the Barcoo Way and nestled amongst the astonishingly beautiful landscapes of the Ylang Ylang ranges...

JOURNEY TO THE END OF THE LINE

You could be correct in saying that Yaraka ‘grew on the sheep’s back’. The region began as a large paddock filled with prized Merino sheep belonging to the massive Milo Sheep Station. It came into its own when the State Government split up the Milo leases. The town was officially founded in 1917 with the opening of the rail line from Emmet. The new station was named Yaraka (the Indigenous name for white spear grass) and ultimately became the end of the line.

Make sure you pop into the End of the Line Museum housed in the original railway station. While there, you’ll learn about the Great Western Rail project and how it impacted Yaraka. If you love stories about trains and the railway, then you won’t want to miss this attraction. Along with the stories, there are some really interesting artifacts from Yaraka’s days as a railway town. Let’s face it, it’s not every day that you travel to the ‘end of the line.’

‘ On the Outer Barcoo where the churches are few, and men of religion are scanty, On a road never cross’d ‘cept by folk that are lost, one Michael Magee had a shanty.’ About an hour south-west of Yaraka is a turn-off to the ruins of Magee’s Shanty. According to local folklore, Banjo Paterson wrote the iconic poem ‘A Bush Christening’ at this very site. Nearby are the ruins of a Cobb & Co pub and the lonely grave of goldminer Richard Magoffin who perished in 1885 chasing his fortune. To access the area, you’ll cross a vast clay pan, so be prepared to kick up some dust! Yaraka Hotel operates a tour to the Shanty if you’d prefer not to drive. Check tour details with the publicans on arrival in town.

It’s not unusual for overnight visitors to extend their stay in Yaraka. This probably has a lot to do with the local publicans who also run the accommodation and camping ground. A personal welcome to town is more the norm than not. You’re sure to be introduced to other happy travellers as you enjoy a cool ale in the bar. Stay at the hotel or just a stone’s throw away are powered caravan sites, tennis court and a pristine swimming pool. This standard in-ground swimming pool has a million-dollar view of the beautiful Yang Yang Ranges. What better place to cool off and relax in the Outback.
