Whitehaven Beach

The crystal clear aqua waters and pristine white silica sand of Whitehaven Beach stretch over seven kilometres along Whitsunday Island, the largest of the 74 islands in the Whitsundays. The Great Barrier Reef The Whitsundays lie in the heart of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef, stretching over 2,500 kilometres along Australia’s Queensland coast. The Great Barrier Reef protects the Whitsundays from ocean swells, providing the region with calm, protected waters in which to enjoy this aquatic wonderland. The Whitsunday islands and coast all have fringing reefs – coral gardens very close to the shoreline, with abundant marine life to explore. The ‘outer’ Great Barrier Reef is around 40 nautical miles off the Whitsunday Coast, just a short two hour boat ride yet you will feel worlds away as you indulge in its beauty from above, on and below the water. Snorkel or scuba dive with thousands of brightly coloured fish and coral, feel the adrenaline rush as you take a scenic flight over the Great Barrier Reef. Dolphins, turtles and dugong are abundant in the waters of the Whitsundays and each year humpback and pilot whales migrate to the region. A large variety of day and overnight tours depart the Whitsunday Coast and islands to the Great Barrier Reef each day. Local scuba dive companies cater for every skill level from novice to dive master. 8

The Whitsundays 74 Island Wonders

Set Sail Sail throughout the waters of the Whitsunday islands and flit from one island paradise to the next. The Whitsundays offer some of the world’s best sailing and cruising holidays. The combination of a warm climate, steady breezes, clear turquoise waters, secluded coves and anchorages, fringing reefs and isolated beaches is irresistible.

You can do as much or as little as you like while exploring the waterways. Navigate your own holiday, join other travellers on a packaged overnight sailing adventure or hire a skipper to pull the ropes while you unwind on deck (see page 26 for further information and details).

Step on board a luxurious yacht or catamaran and set sail for your Whitsundays adventure. Drop the anchor in a secluded cove, take a dip or snorkel over fringing reefs with myriads of colourful fish and corals.

Whatever your choice, when you first step aboard your vessel you will feel invigorated with the anticipation of your sailing adventure. You are guaranteed fun, excitement, relaxation, exploration and an experience you will treasure forever and sunsets you will never forget.

Travel Information

AVERAGE TEMPERATURE & TOTAL RAINFALL

The Whitsundays is one of Australia’s most spectacular tropical island and coastal destinations. Weather

The Whitsundays enjoys a tropical climate of hot summers, warm winters and bright spring and autumn days. Average daily temperatures range from just over 21°C in the winter months (June/July) and up to 32°C during the height of summer (December/January). The average year round water temperature remains a welcoming 25°C. Higher rainfall can be expected during the tropical wet season (February/March) when days can be steamy and the summer heat is broken by tropical showers.

Getting Here Getting to the Whitsundays is easy, whether from across the other side of the world, from major cities around Australia, or driving from nearby. See map on page 4 and 5.

By Air The Whitsundays is serviced by two domestic airports – Great Barrier Reef Airport (Hamilton Island) and Whitsunday Coast Airport (Proserpine), with daily direct flights from Cairns, Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne, and connecting flights from other major cities. Regular ferry services connect the islands and are conveniently linked with arrivals and departures from each airport. International flights arriving into Australia’s major cities can connect with domestic flights to the Whitsundays. Major car rental companies operate out of the Whitsunday Coast Airport. Another option is to fly into Mackay, pick up a transfer or rental car and head to Airlie Beach which is about a 90 minute drive.

By Road The Bruce Highway is the major road linking Queensland’s coastal cities and towns. The Bruce Highway runs through Proserpine and Bowen on the Whitsunday Coast. Airlie Beach is located approximately 20 minutes off the Bruce Highway from Proserpine along Shute Harbour Road. Major national coach operators include the Whitsundays in their regular scheduled services.

By Rail Queensland Rail services to Proserpine Station on the Whitsunday Coast link the Whitsundays to the coastal centres between Brisbane and Cairns. Coach transfers between Proserpine and Airlie Beach are included in rail travel passes. Melbourne 878

Getting Around Once you arrive in the Whitsundays, there are plenty of ways to get around the region, including bus, car, limousine, taxi and ferry. All island resorts are connected with the mainland through daily ferry services. Air transfers by helicopter, seaplane or light aircraft are also available.

About Marine Stingers

Marine stingers may be present in the waters of tropical Queensland year round, with the higher risk season occurring between October - May. The good news – you can swim in North Queensland during stinger season. By taking simple precautions to minimise risk you can safely and comfortably swim in all parts of the Whitsunday region. By wearing a full body wetsuit, you are not only protected from marine stingers, but also the sun. Body suits are available for hire by most tour operators and dive stores. Please see www.marinestingers.com.au for more information or ask your tour operator for advice.

Winners and finalists of the 2013 Whitsunday Tourism Awards who have displayed best practice in business planning, innovation, marketing, environmental sustainability or their business operations.

Australia’s Eco Certification program recognises tourism operators who provide genuine environmentally friendly tours, attraction and accommodation products. There are three levels of accreditation available: Nature Tourism, Ecotourism and Advanced Ecotourism.

Sail Away Sailing is synonymous with the Whitsundays. But have you ever thought of combining a sailing experience with your accommodation, meals and touring all into one. The Whitsundays is home to the Southern Hemisphere’s largest fleet of skipper yourself and chartered vessels, offering a unique opportunity to combine your accommodation with your sightseeing and sleep out in the calm and protected waters of the Whitsundays. It’s a truly distinct holiday experience that the Whitsundays specialises in – and a must do for anyone who has ever wanted to try their hand at sailing.

The Whitsundays 74 Island Wonders

Do It Yourself

Bareboating holidays provide a chance to experience the magic of the Whitsundays at your own pace. The protected waters of the Whitsundays are recognised as amongst the safest in the world and perfect for the beginner sailor all the way up to experienced, professional sailors. Although some sailing experience is an advantage, formal qualifications are not necessary to charter a yacht, catamaran or motor cruiser. After a thorough briefing, you’ll be on your way as the skipper of your own sailing holiday in paradise. Alternatively, choose to take an experienced sail guide with you for as long as you like. The beauty of cruising around the Whitsundays and skippering yourself is that you choose where you go. Drop anchor in a secluded anchorage, explore deserted beaches, or enjoy the company of other sailors on their own adventure.

Learn to Sail

If the sailing bug bites you, as it does many a visitor to the Whitsundays, there are sailing schools available from the Whitsunday Coast and Hamilton Island. Learn to sail amongst the 74 island wonders of the Whitsundays in a fully comprehensive sailing course designed to cater for every level of ability and experience. After just a few days of training and experience, you’ll be competent in raising sails and charting a course around the Whitsundays, ready to head off on your next voyage of discovery.

Have It Done For You

Do as much or as little as you like as your crew navigate around the Whitsundays for you. Pull up the sails, take the helm, or simply lie on the deck and enjoy the view while your personal crew sets course. Crewed charters are best for you if you still want to hire your own yacht or catamaran, but don’t have the confidence to sail it alone. Simply hire a professional skipper and tell them where you want to go. And if you’re keen, learn a little sailing for next time! If you want to meet new people from around the world, a package sailing holiday is perfect. You will sail to the top destinations for beach combing, snorkelling, diving and that perfect sunset. If you want to cover a greater area of the Whitsundays and the sails seem a little cumbersome, a motor cruiser will be more your scene.

The Whitsunday Coast The Whitsunday Coast is colourful, plentiful and alive, stretching from the hub of Airlie Beach to stunning and secluded beaches along the coastline and inland to picturesque hinterland. Ideal for exploring by car along quiet country roads, the Whitsunday Coast boasts lush, forested hills, a multitude of national parks, fields of sugar cane and farmland, an undeveloped coastline and a vibrant atmosphere.

The Whitsundays 74 Island Wonders

Inland from Airlie Beach, Proserpine is charming, a typical Australian country town offering traditional country hospitality. The town boasts excellent boutique shopping and a historical museum providing visitors with a comprehensive record of the region’s history. Next door, you will find the Whitsunday Region Information Centre where you can find all the information you will need to plan your Whitsundays adventure. To the north, Bowen is a friendly seaside town which boasts seven beautiful beaches that remain largely undiscovered by tourists. Bowen is home to the Bowen Mango and is also Queensland’s oldest town which still boasts that old style hospitality. Inland from Bowen is Collinsville − a charming town, far enough away from the hubs to be a country retreat, but close enough to retain that same friendly and welcoming attitude of all the Whitsundays locals. The region also has several secluded beach townships a short drive from Airlie Beach, offering caravan park accommodation, private holiday homes and eco resorts at which to stay and you will feel as though you’ve uncovered a hidden gem a little way ‘off the beaten track’.

Travelling by Car or Caravan

There are spectacular landscapes to enjoy on a driving holiday through the Whitsundays. The lush greens of the tropical rainforest, the cane fields and reds, browns and greens of Collinsville, all the way to the long stretch of beautiful turquoise water; so iconic for the Whitsundays. For inspiring itineraries, see pages 52-57. For those travelling with a car or caravan, local holiday parks offer caravan sites and cabins in tropical resort surroundings. Airlie Beach itself has several holiday parks to choose from, each offering something different – whether it is family focused with waterslides and kids’ activities, a retreat in the rainforest, or resort style with large swimming pools and large spaces to relax. tourismwhitsundays.com.au
