WE WELCOME YOU ALL TO WIRADJURI COUNTRY.
The Cowra Region is part of the Wiradjuri language group, the largest in NSW which covers most of the State. Connection to Country is important to our community in remembering the history of our ancestors, our elders and our sense of belonging. Our local Wiradjuri community continues its strong connection to the land. The Lachlan River (Kalari) has significant meaning to the Wiradjuri people through stories, songs and art. The Aboriginal Murals painted on the pylons of the bridge over the Lachlan River are the creations of Kym and Trish Freeman and the local community. The artwork symbolises the animals and local landscapes around Cowra. The murals are a shared project, with both local families and school children contributing their personal stories and handprints. The Gugaa, or goanna, is the Wiradjuri Totem. Take time to sit quietly at the river or at Billy Goat (Bellevue) Hill and make your own connection with our Wiradjuri Country.

WELCOME TO COWRA
On behalf of our community, I extend to you a very warm welcome to the Cowra Shire. Nestled in the beautiful Lachlan Valley of NSW, Cowra is a wonderful place to live and work. We enjoy the convenience of the city without forsaking the lifestyle of the country. Cowra is rich in Aboriginal and European history and while our primary industry is agriculture, there are other vibrant aspects to our economy, not the least being tourism. With the Lachlan River running through the heart of the Shire, we are home to some excellent food and wine producers, which I would encourage you to sample during your visit. The Prisoner of War breakout in 1944 has resulted in a number of attractions and our community’s continuing close ties with Japan. The Cowra Japanese Garden, Prisoner of War (POW) Camp Site, War Cemeteries, Australia’s World Peace Bell and the famous POW hologram presentation at the Cowra Visitor Information Centre are must-sees for residents and visitors alike. The Cowra Shire also has a number of small villages well worth a visit. Wyangala Waters Holiday Park is another popular attraction and a hub for all kinds of water sports. I’m sure you will enjoy the many experiences and warm hospitality that Cowra has to offer during your stay.

OUR WARTIME LEGACY Cowra is steeped in rich history and heritage, from the solemn grounds of the Cowra POW Camp and War Cemeteries, to the uplifting significance of Australia’s World Peace Bell.
THE COWRA BREAKOUT
At 1:50am on the 5th of August 1944, over 1000 Japanese prisoners launched a mass escape from the Cowra Prisoner of War Camp. It was the largest prisoner of war breakout in modern military history. 234 Japanese prisoners and 5 Australian soldiers lost their lives. From this violent beginning, a journey of reconciliation and a growing friendship have developed between the people of Cowra and the nation of Japan.
POW HOLOGRAM THEATRE
Located at the Cowra Visitor Information Centre, this 9 minute presentation brings the tragic events of The Cowra Breakout to life through the eyes of Claire, a young Cowra local. The famous POW Hologram Theatre is the best place to start your historical journey through the Cowra region.
PRISONER OF WAR CAMPSITE
The ruins of the Prisoner of War Campsite are still visible to this day. Well-placed interpretive signage will help you visualise what once stood in this picturesque part of Cowra. Stand under the replica Guard

Tower where a detailed audio presentation will bring the scenery around you to life. Walk or cycle the Garrison Walk, taking you straight through to the beautiful Japanese Garden and Cultural Centre.
WAR CEMETERIES

This is the only Japanese War Cemetery outside of Japan. The Australian War Cemetery adjoins the Japanese War Cemetery, and contains graves of the servicemen who died at the Cowra Military Training Camp, as well as the 5 Australian soldiers killed during the 1944 breakout.
AUSTRALIA’S WORLD PEACE BELL Made from melted down coins donated by 106 member countries of the United Nations. Australia’s World Peace Bell is a testament to Cowra’s long-standing contribution to world peace and international understanding. Recognised by the World Peace Bell Association
in 1992, the bell is proudly housed in Cowra’s Civic Square where visitors can listen to the audio presentation and even ring the bell.
EUROPA PARK From 1940–1945, the Cowra Military Training Camp trained some 80,000 military personnel. In 1949, the site became the Cowra Migrant Camp and was home to about 17,000 European migrants until 1955. Interpretive signage and a memorial have been erected in honour of the migrant families of Cowra in Europa Park.

JAPANESE GARDEN The ultimate tranquil experience, the Cowra Japanese Garden & Cultural Centre is a peaceful space to indulge the senses, unwind and enjoy natural beauty all year round. COWRA JAPANESE GARDEN AND CULTURAL CENTRE
Take the time to explore the 5 hectares of manicured garden, serene lakes and cascading streams with sweeping views of Cowra’s countryside and beyond. Ken Nakajima designed the Kaiyushiki (strolling) garden to symbolise the Japanese landscape. The garden is classified by the National Trust as ‘A place of Cultural, Architectural and Historic Significance to be preserved for present and future generations.’ The Japanese Garden is beautiful during all seasons, but is at its best during Spring when the annual Sakura
6
Matsuri (Cherry Blossom Festival) is held. Thousands of visitors attend Sakura Matsuri each year to celebrate the stunning cherry blossoms and enjoy a variety of Japanese cultural activities and performances. The Cultural Centre showcases exhibitions from local and regional artists, whilst the two galleries feature an extensive collection of Japanese artworks and artifacts. Feed the Koi carp from the viewing platforms overlooking the lakes, enjoy a meal at the onsite café or simply take the time to relax in an authentic open air Tea House. Either way, you’ll be transported to a place of peace and relaxation.
Did you know? Ken Nakajima designed the Cowra Japanese Garden based on the first landscape garden built by the Shogun Tokugawa during the Edo period of Japan (16th century). The Shogun had the garden constructed from drawings of Japanese geography, forming a miniature replica of Japan’s mountains, waterfalls, lakes and trees.

In 1922, the famous Australian aviator Sir Charles Kingsford Smith and Cowra man Ken Richards attempted to fly under the old Cowra Bridge in an Avro 540 biplane. They cleared the bridge with around 18cm to spare on either side. The pair also attempted to fly under the nearby railway bridge, however, Richards noticed telephone lines in the flightpath and managed to pull the aircraft away from danger mere seconds before impact.

CANOWINDRA Canowindra (pronounced ca-noun-dra) is just 33km north of Cowra, about 20 minutes by car and is a destination well worth the trip. The word ‘Canowindra’ is derived from the Wiradjuri word meaning ‘home’. CANOWINDRA
Take a step back in time with Canowindra’s historic main street and its beautifully restored buildings, shops, guesthouses, cafés and country pubs. At the end of the main street you will find the intriguing Age of Fishes Museum, home to an incredible collection of 360-millionyear-old fish fossils presented with brilliant and engaging hands-on exhibits. For visitors who enjoy a flight of fancy, Canowindra is often referred to as the Ballooning Capital of Australia. For years, hot air balloon enthusiasts have found the climate and topography, not to mention the scenery in Canowindra, perfect for ballooning. Every year over ten thousand visitors flock to Canowindra to witness the spectacle that is the Canowindra International Balloon Challenge. Dozens of pilots take to the skies, competing in a myriad of different tasks, culminating in the popular Balloon Glow and Night Market where balloons light up the night sky in a visual spectacle that has to be seen to be believed.
Did you know? In 1863, Robinson’s Pub (now the Royal Hotel Canowindra) was held up by the famous bushranger Ben Hall and his gang. It was there that they took the entire town of Canowindra hostage for three days. The captive citizens were provided with food, drink and entertainment at the gang’s expense. Visitors can take a step back in time with Blind Freddy’s Bushranger Tours and discover Canowindra’s incredible Colonial history.
