DRIVING SAFETY TIPS FOR THE

NEWELL HIGHWAY

When you’re behind the wheel of a car – whether alone or with passengers – driving safely on the Newell Highway should always be your top concern. Here are some safe driving tips:

Focus on driving ■■

■■

■■

■■

■■

■■

■■

■■

■■

■■

■■

Have your car serviced and given a proper safety check-up. Plan your trip and make sure you allow plenty of time to get to your destination, including rest stops. The local Visitor Information Centres can provide helpful advice and information. Avoid distractions and keep 100% of your attention on driving at all times – no multi-tasking. Don’t use your phone or any other electronic device while driving. Never drink alcohol or take illegal drugs, not even small amounts, before or during a long trip. Stay within the speed limit and always choose an appropriate speed for the driving conditions. Speeding gives you less time to react and increases the severity of an accident. Make sure all passengers wear appropriate seatbelts or child restraints – including pets. Make sure all luggage is properly secured and won’t become projectiles in the case of sudden braking. Keep ample space between you and the car in front and increase that space at higher speeds and in wet conditions. Make sure that your car has a spare tyre inflated and in good condition. Do not attempt to change a flat tyre unless it is safe to do so. If possible, drive at slow speeds on a flat tyre to a safe spot away from traffic to change the flat tyre. Slow down to 40km/h when passing a stationary emergency vehicle displaying blue or red flashing lights. The rule applies to vehicles travelling in both directions, unless the road is divided by a median strip.

Advisory signs and road conditions Observe the State and local council advisory signs and notices concerning road closures and conditions. Don’t cross flooded roads as flooded roads can be very dangerous – even shallow water can sweep your vehicle away. Find an alternative route, or wait for the water level to drop and it is

10

safe to proceed. Road condition information can be obtained from the following websites: ■■

■■ ■■

New South Wales – http://livetraffic.rta.nsw.gov.au/desktop.html Victoria – http://traffic.vicroads.vic.gov.au Queensland – www.131940.qld.gov.au/Home.aspx

Fatigue-related behaviour Driver fatigue is one of the top three contributors to the road toll. Most fatiguerelated accidents occur during normal sleeping hours, and the more severe the crash, the more likely it is that the driver or drivers were fatigued. The only way to address fatigue is by sleeping, so get a good night’s sleep before heading off on a long trip, don’t travel for more than eight to ten hours a day and take regular breaks – at least every two hours.

Be Truck Aware Trucks have blind spots due to their size and length, and have larger blind spots than the average car. This means that truck drivers may not be able to see you, so be cautious when driving next to, or behind, a truck.

Australian wildlife and livestock Lookout for Australian wildlife, animals and livestock as they often graze on the roadside and can stray onto the road. Drivers should slow down when they see animal warning signs (which often feature on country/outback roads in areas where roads share the habitat with known local animals). Be very careful when driving at sunrise, sunset and at night, when animals are most active. If an animal crosses in front of you, brake gently – do not swerve wildly to avoid it.

Farm and Mining Equipment Farm and mining equipment is often driven or transported along public roads, please be patient and when it is safe, the driver may allow you to pass. Over-sized farm and mining equipment will often feature an escort vehicle that has flashing lights and a sign ‘Heavy or Large or Oversize Vehicle’. When drivers see an escort vehicle they should slow down and move to the left as large vehicles (possibly wide as well) follow shortly and there may be multiple vehicles. This page is supported by

NARRANDERA

Narrandera

HEART OF THE RIVERINA!

N

arrandera is one of those special places on planet earth – small enough that you can immerse yourself in it easily – expansive enough to make you feel free. It’s peaceful enough to allow you to relax and energised enough for you to immerse yourself in the community. Dig a little or dig deep – you’ll find treasure here for sure.

See and Do Take time to explore these sites in Narrandera: Koala Spotting – The search is the journey. You might find a koala at Rocky Water Hole Bridge or in the Narrandera Flora and Fauna Reserve or the Koala Regeneration Reserve which both rest between Lake Talbot and the Murrumbidgee River. Also spotted at these locations: echidna, tawny frog mouth, goanna, and the dew lizard, for which Narrandera is named. Lake Talbot Swimming Complex – In the warmer months keep cool and take the plunge on the Rampage Slide at the Lake Talbot Swimming Complex (1 Lake Drive). You’ll also find shaded lawns overlooking sparkling pools, as well as slides, BBQs and picnic areas. The Murrumbidgee River – Narrandera is made special by our waterways and the most ancient of these is the Murrumbidgee River, gathering water on its way from the Snowy Mountains and giving life to the region’s irrigated crops. Spread your toes in the white sand of one of our river beaches. Take a paddle, fish off a bank or put in a boat at one of a number of boat ramps in and near Narrandera.

16

Explore Nature – You have choices when it comes to exploring the wild places here. There are state forests, reserves and NSW national parks with names Gillenbah, Buckingbong, Five Mile, Galore Hill, Narrandera and Murrumbidgee Valley. Wander through the cypress pine woodlands and maybe see a rare and tiny orchid, or walk among the river red gums and spot a koala or a tawny frog mouth.

gated toddler playground, outdoor exercise equipment and plenty of picnic tables in the shade, this is a fantastic place to stretch your legs from the Newell.

Narrandera Bike and Hike – With track head signage at Marie Bashir Park (Cadell St), there are three separate tracks so you can tailor your journey to suit your experience and ability. All tracks have directional and interpretive signage throughout – it couldn’t be easier for families, leisure cyclists, mountain bikers and hikers to enjoy.

The Royal Doulton Fountain – Found in the Memorial Gardens (East Street), there is an identical fountain in Pakistan, but there were only ever two made.

Narrandera Wetlands – Home to an amazing variety of native birds, the Narrandera Wetlands (Lizard Drive off the Newell Highway) rests in tranquil surrounds guaranteed to refresh you. Take advantage of the bird hides to study the activity on the water. The hides are painted in local Wiradjuri themes. The walking track around the wetland area allows you a number of vantage points. Wiradjuri Culture – You can visit a workshop where traditional Wiradjuri tools are made and see a collection of artefacts unearthed over the years. Here you’ll get to talk with a Wiradjuri Elder who is using the skills passed to him by his father. Marie Bashir Park – You can’t drive through Narrandera without admiring the beautiful Marie Bashir Park (Cadell St) with grandstand and white picket fence around the cricket oval. With accessible toilets,

Koalas are regularly spotted at Rocky Water Hole Bridge (off Old Wagga Road) or in the Narrandera Flora and Fauna Reserve. Spring is usually when you’ll find koalas with their joeys.

2 Lake Talbot Swimming Complex

At Lake Talbot Swimming Complex (1 Lake Drive) you’ll find shaded lawns overlooking sparkling pools. There are slides, BBQs and picnic areas.

3 Barellan Clydesdale and Heavy Horses Weekend

This event really is the great Australian festival. Held annually on the October long weekend, the event offers two fantastic days of competitions, demonstrations and displays of working horses and farming methods used in years past.

Eat, Drink & Shop You can buy regionally made cheeses and wines, and you’ll find a choice of homemade wares in our boutique shops. You will also find sumptuous supplies to make your own, clothing and gifts in our craft boutiques, and you might be able to join a making workshop. A bit of pampering goes a long way, so an hour spent at one of our beauty salons will refresh you. We have all your basics – fresh regional fruit and veg, supermarket goods, hardware, and if something breaks, engineering and car repairs.

Stay Awhile Narrandera has a variety of accommodation offerings. For a full list of accommodation visit www.narrandera.com.au.

, We re RV Friendly Narrandera is a very popular stop for caravans, campervan and RV travellers. With free, all day, long vehicle parking in Cadell Street, you can easily walk around town from here. Narrandera Showgrounds hosts the town’s dump point and water.

Explore the region Narrandera is a comfy home base for short trips to sample cheese, chocolates and liquorice, to hunt antiques, to visit a major wildlife park, some tiny towns, or explore farmland and forests.

Village of barellan This town is well worth a stop off the Newell Highway, along Burley Griffin Way to the west, to experience the real spirit of

a country village. Barellan is noted for its warm hospitality and the can-do attitude of its residents. Barellan is the home town of tennis great Evonne Goolagong-Cawley OAM, who grew up and learned to play tennis in Barellan.

See and Do – Barellan Barellan Swimming Pool 55 Mulga Street A 25m six lane pool which provides a pleasant, shady, safe and happy environment during the summer months. Barellan Museum Yapunyah Street Barellan has a great little museum which is open 11am-3pm Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday of each week.

4 Grong Grong Earth Park

Grong Grong Earth Park means wild play for kids. There’s a herb garden, picnic tables, a water pump, a cubby, a boat, a pizza oven, a (book) shearing shed, and things to clamber on – and it’s all free. The Earth Park is a muststop to take respite from the highway for families.

5 Narrandera’s Heritage Buildings

Narrandera is listed by the National Trust as an Urban Heritage Area. You can pick up a map and take our selfguided tour of the buildings in the town centre. You’ll see how the town began at the River and expanded quickly to the Rail as paddle steamers gave way to rail as a means to move produce and supplies.

Big Tennis Racquet Yapunyah Street The Big Tennis Racquet was unveiled in October 2009 during the Barellan Centenary celebrations, as a tribute to the former Barellan local and great Australian tennis player, Evonne Goolagong-Cawley, OAM. The racquet is an exact 20:1 scale model of Evonne’s battered wooden signature Dunlop racquet. Evonne Goolagong-Cawley Wall Mulga Street In 1956, across the back lane from the Goolagong home, the Barellan War Memorial Tennis Club was built. The practice wall, where Evonne Goolagong-Cawley would spend hours hitting a ball with a small homemade wooden bat, still stands.

WARRUMBUNGLE SHIRE DISCOVER NEW HORIZONS

Warrumbungle Shire straddles the Newell and is a place of many contrasts with great ways to fill your days … and nights. Warrumbungle Shire happily boasts ownership of the Warrumbungle Dark Sky Park – Australia’s first and only dark sky park. For this reason and many others related to the dark skies, Warrumbungle Shire is the Astronomy Capital of Australia hosting Australia’s largest optical astronomy research facility, Siding Spring Observatory at Coonabarabran. A visit to Siding Spring will show you that this is the home of not just one telescope, there are 14 different facilities on site with the new iTelescope housing 16 telescopes all aimed at the southern night skies and most of them remotely accessible from the northern hemisphere. This visit to Siding Spring shows the work of the astronomers. But an evening at one of the privately owned and operated observatories, open to the public for night sky viewing, is your chance to try your hand (or eye) at observing, and with story telling and a demystifying of the great beyond, completes the total astronomy experience, perhaps having you thirst for more.

38

We often hear the term FOMO but in Warrumbungle Shire we prefer to remind you there are joys of missing out – JOMO, the joy of missing the crowds, traffic, hustle and bustle and enjoying the laid back easy going nature of life as it was meant to be. With three very different national parks, there is something for everyone – camping, picnicking, treks or strolls and simply breath-taking scenery. Learn for yourself why the Warrumbungle National Park was identified as a Dark Sky Park. Take a short break or travel the universe. Marvel at the skeleton of the Diprotodon (the largest Australian marsupial) in the Coonabarbaran Visitor Information Centre Australian Museum Megafauna and Diprotodon Exhibition or learn more about the indigenous history of the area in the Keeping Place and ArtSpace. Order a long black or a tea bag ... your life can be educational, inspirational, challenging, relaxing and experiential ... this is the life of Warrumbungle Shire .. we’ve got it all!

Long before our region was known as Moree Plains Shire, the Kamilaroi people called this place home. With a history stretching back over 40,000 years, the proud culture of the indigenous custodians will enlighten and fascinate you when you visit the Dhiiyaan Aboriginal Centre in the CBD. There are so many fabulous aspects to the Moree Plains Shire but the best of all is the people.
