GETTING AROUND DRIVING TIPS
In Central Western Queensland and remote areas, it is common to come across single lane bitumen roads. When coming across road trains and heavy vehicles on single lane roads, slow right down and move off the road to the left. If it is safe to do so move off the road entirely and stop to avoid any obstacles on the verge. In wet conditions edges tend to be soft and/or slippery, so you should always keep your right wheels on the bitumen and keep moving slowly to avoid getting bogged. Care should be taken when passing and overtaking road trains and heavy vehicles, including caravans. Ensure you have a clear line of sight, allow plenty of room and be prepared for vehicles to move a little from side to side as you overtake. If a road train is approaching to overtake you, move as far to the left as possible and stop if necessary to allow it to overtake safely. BACKUPS
On major highways, fuel stops are rarely more than 200km apart so it should
not be necessary to carry spare fuel. However, where you do see ‘No Fuel’ signs, it means exactly that. Ensure your vehicle is mechanically sound and carry a first aid kit, plenty of water and spares such as tyres, radiator hoses and fanbelts, together with a good tool kit. Ensure your spare tyre is at the correct pressure. If you’re travelling in a remote area, it is wise to have a UHF or satellite phone in case of an emergency, as mobile coverage is only available up to 20km outside of towns. External car aerials can increase mobile coverage dramatically.
coverage in the far south-west corner of the region, west of Quilpie. Public phones are recommended for extended travel in this area. WILDLIFE AND STOCK
If you see stock or wild animals near the road, slow down; do not swerve or your vehicle may roll. Be patient with stock and wary of kangaroos and emus. It pays to be vigilant when driving in the Outback, especially either side of sunrise or sunset when kangaroos tend to be at their most active and the light makes seeing them more difficult.
MOBILE COVERAGE
Longreach, Mount Isa, Charleville, Bedourie and Birdsville have coverage from Telstra only. Outside of these towns only Telstra Next G Network is available, usually within a 20km radius of towns. There is limited mobile phone

FEEL THE PRIDE OF AUSTRALIA
IENCE R E P X E ART OF THE HEUTBACK THE O
As you roll into Longreach ‘Heart of Outback Queensland’, don’t be surprised if you feel just a tinge of ‘Aussie’ pride. The unmistakable red and white livery of a Qantas Jumbo Jet dominates the skyline from kilometres away. Inside the dedicated museum, you’ll uncover many a story linked to the founding of Australia’s national airline that just so happened to grow up in Longreach. And, what better year to visit than 2020 when Qantas turns 100. Across the road, you’ll spot the shimmering curved roof of another Australian icon. Just like Hugh Sawrey’s famed artwork A Vision Splendid, the Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame pays tribute to the Aussie Stockman. His dream was shared by other famous Australians including RM Williams, a bushman and entrepreneur. The five themed galleries also celebrate the stories of Indigenous Australians, Pastoralists and Explorers. It’s the place of Aussie legends! SUPERCHARGE YOUR OUTBACK EXPERIENCE Feel the surge of adrenaline as you’re transported full-tilt in a restored Cobb & Co stagecoach along the original LongreachWindorah mail route. Do you know that it’s the only stagecoach gallop in Australia? Supersize your experience with an exhilarating scenic helicopter flight. Follow the winding curve of the Thomson River or capture the golden glow of a perfect outback sunset from the air with Queensland Helicopters. Snap on a harness and step out on the wing of a Jumbo Jet at Qantas Founders Museum – guaranteed to get the heart pumping! LEAP INTO THE THOMSON RIVER ENTERTAINMENT Heighten your sunset experience with a river cruise and authentic outback entertainment. Choose to glide the waterway in old world

style aboard a paddle wheeler before a traditional campfire dinner and old-time sound and light picture show. Or, relax on the top deck of a fully licensed catamaran as it cruises to Sunset Bend. Top it off with a two-course camp oven dinner and live entertainment on the river stage. But why should you choose? Experience the best of both worlds and do them all! TREASURE OUR COUNTRY LIFESTYLE For a real slice of Aussie history visit our multi-generation cattle and sheep properties. Join the Strathmore Station Smoko Tour to meet local graziers Bevan and Maree. Learn about their award-winning water run on a tour of the station and tuck into some of Maree’s home-baked delights for morning tea. Find out why the Queen and Prince Philip shared a cuppa with the Walker family on a sunset tour of Camden Park Station. See their historic shearing shed before joining Outback Dan for sunset drinks at One Tree Hill. Visit Nogo Station for an intimate insight into station life by the Kinnon family. The tour includes sheep shearing, homestead morning tea and a station safari in an open-top double-decker. Now there’s something you don’t do every day! DISCOVER WHAT’S ON THE DINNER MENU Saunter into downtown Longreach for a smorgasbord of dining options. Harry’s Restaurant and Bar is named after local legend, Harry Redford. It’s also legendary with the locals for top notch chef-prepared dishes created with fresh, seasonal produce. The Welcome Home Stonegrill brings traditional campfire methods of cooking inside for hearty outback dinners. Cook your choice of meat or fish the way you like it on the hot stone at your table. If great value pub dining is the order of the day then head to the RSL or Birdcage Hotel. The smorgasbord continues with Woody’s Pizza, Happy Valley Chinese and Little Star Indian Restaurant.

DAY 1: MONDAY
DAY 2: TUESDAY
Monday morning sure looks fine with a morning walk downtown or along the Botanical Walkway. If you’re an early morning coffee person, you can get your fix at a variety of cafes or eateries. After a relaxed brekky, head to the Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame to wander the five themed galleries then catch the 11.00am Outback Stockman’s Show. This afternoon, take a 20 minute drive to Ilfracombe where you can walk the Machinery Mile then tuck into refreshments, lunch or dinner at the historic Wellshot Hotel.
Get the heart pumping with a 45 minute morning stagecoach ride in a restored Cobb & Co Stagecoach. It begins with a relaxed pace through town then races full-tilt along a stretch of the original LongreachWindorah mail route. Follow this up with some traditional bush theatre at The Harry Redford Old Time Tent Show. Head up the road to the Qantas Founders Museum for lunch and a wander through the museum and original hangar. You can also join a 707/747 Jet tour, Wing Walk or have a go at a Flight Simulator. 6 • EX PER I E N C ELON G R E AC H.COM. AU
DAY 4: THURSDAY Meet local graziers on a morning station tour today. Depending on your time, you can choose the 2.5 hour tour of thirdgeneration Strathmore Station or the 4 hour Nogo Station Experience. At Strathmore you’ll learn about Santa Gertrudis cattle and Merino wool production then enjoy a delicious home-baked morning tea back at the homestead. This afternoon, meet the Walker family at Camden Park Station for a tour of their property and sunset nibbles at One Tree Hill.
Longreach Ilfracombe
DAY 5: FRIDAY Today’s the day to explore more of the region. Drive around 1.5 hours south-east from Longreach and you’ll arrive in Isisford on the Outer Barcoo. See a life-sized replica of ‘Isisfordia Duncani’ at the the Outer Barcoo Interpretation Centre; it predates the first recorded appearance of true crocodiles by over 30 million years! Learn how Isisford came to be with a visit to Whitman’s Museum. Keep an eye out for the Outback’s biggest Yellowbelly sculpture. Spend a few hours on the water at nearby Oma Waterhole, one of the many permanent waterholes fed by the Barcoo River. Overnight Isisford.
Isisford
Emmet
Yaraka
DAY 6: SATURDAY Drive another half hour from Isisford and you’ll reach Emmet, a historic railway siding with just two permanent residents. Emmet is the western gateway to Idalia National Park, home to the yellow-footed rock-wallaby. If you are keen to explore, then test out one of the walking trails. They are graded from Easy to Difficult. From Emmet, it’s just a 50 minute drive to Yaraka and the End of the Line Museum. Call into the Yaraka Hotel for refreshments, accommodation and a chat with the friendly publicans. Meet some locals and stock up at the general store. Join the daily sunset tour to Mount Slowcombe for awesome 360 degree views of the beautiful mesa hills. Overnight Yaraka
DAY 3: WEDNESDAY The Longreach Cemetery Tour might also be the ticket if you’re keen for more stories on local legends. For a fascinating insight into distance education in the bush, visit the Longreach School of Distance Education (formally Longreach School of the Air). The one hour guided tour includes a live on-air lesson with students and teachers. Visit the Powerhouse Museum where you can walk through giant engines and see how electricity was generated before the age of computers. Late afternoon is perfect for a sunset cruise, dinner and entertainment on the Thomson River.
DAY 7: SUNDAY About an hour south-west of Yaraka is the turn-off to the ruins of Magee’s Shanty, said to be where Banjo Paterson wrote ‘A Bush Christening’. You can join a tour run by the Yaraka Hotel or drive yourself. Also in the area are the ruins of a Cobb & Co pub and the lonely grave of goldminer Richard Magoffin. Return to Longreach this afternoon or continue your outback adventure to one of our neighbouring regions. OUTBACK PIONEERS Want an authentic and entertaining outback experience? Outback Pioneers in Longreach has award-winning experiences that get you up close to the heritage and lifestyle. Pop into their booking office at 128 Eagle Street in the historic The Welcome Home building for helpful advice on what to do. You can book their Cobb & Co Stagecoach Experience, Nogo Station Experience, Starlight’s Cruise Experience and Winton Discovery Day Tour. The Cobb & Co Stagecoach Experience is the only opportunity in Australia to gallop in a stagecoach on an old mail route. The full experience also includes the hilarious Harry Redford Old Time Tent Show, morning tea and a bush movie.
OUTBACK EDUCATION IN THE 21ST CENTURY Take the opportunity to visit one of the world’s largest classrooms, where students are spread throughout Western Queensland, Australia and internationally. At Longreach School of Distance Education (School of the Air), students and their teachers sit hundreds of kilometres apart for their daily lessons. Using an online web conferencing platform and teleconference calls, students and teachers can laugh with each other, see and hear each other, share their work instantly; all in the name of learning. How vastly different today’s distance education is to the old days of crackly on-air lessons over a shared two-way UHF channel. At 9.00am and 10.30am, on any school day from February to December you can get an insight into how modern distance education is delivered. It is an eye opener to observe an on-air lesson via the glass-walled studio and there is the chance for visitors to go beyond the ‘tourism room’ and experience a school of distance education and work and play. The guided tour takes visitors to the library, quarters, playgrounds, classrooms, friendship pathway and grounds. A highlight is the amazing array of students’ work and creative projects on display.
The Nogo Station Experience takes you to the heart of station life. Be immersed in the Merino wool story, experience a station safari across the sun-drenched plains to photograph wildlife and outback animals, then enjoy smoko (morning tea) under the gum trees at Captain Starlight’s camp. On the Starlight’s Cruise Experience, you’ll enjoy a leisurely river cruise through the outback sunset on the paddlewheeler or the historic Thomson Princess riverboat before a campfire dinner, traditional entertainment featuring the barefoot bush poet, and the Starlight’s Spectacular Sound & Light Picture Show. Back in the heritage heart of Longreach, next door to The Welcome Home, don’t miss The Station Store – retail therapy outback style in a traditional emporium with leatherware, hats, stockman’s supplies, homewares, haberdashery, local crafts and gifts galore. In the beautifully-restored 1920s The Welcome Home itself you can enjoy a coffee, cakes or lunch in the café and tearoom. Or stop by for a Stonegrill® dining experience on Tuesday, Thursday or Friday evenings (BYO alcohol). Outback Pioneers Experiences run during the winter season only (April – October).
LSODE students only see their class mates a few times a year at the LSODE campus, but they make the most of those rare social opportunities at the swim carnival, athletics carnival, mini-school, cluster days and school camps. You’ll be amazed at what we can achieve when effort conquers distance. On the 1st & 2nd December 2020, we will showcase our 5th whole-school musical production, including our instrumental musicians. Please support our creative learning initiatives by visiting our school. We gratefully accept donations for specific activities and projects. Come on tour with us and see the LSODE kids prove that isolation cannot hold back talent and creativity. Experience and enjoy our outback hospitality for yourself. We provide a colourful range of souvenirs in our tourism room so you can take home a memento of your visit with us (also available online). A few of our visitor favourites include the beautiful hardcover cookbook, Savour the Outback, students’ hand drawn notecards and the wine and stubby coolers. For more information or to book a tour phone 07 4658 4232 or visit www.longreachsde.qld.edu.au. Like us on www.facebook.com/LSODETOURS and Tripadvisor. We look forward to welcoming you to our school.

POWERHOUSE MUSEUM The Powerhouse and Historical Museum houses an electrical industry collection of National significance. It is an initiative of the Longreach Regional Council, preserving the history of electricity production in the central west and a growing collection of local history. The complex building is now listed on the Queensland Heritage Register and the site is on the Register of the National Estate. THE MUSEUM HAS THREE MAIN SECTIONS n The former Longreach Power House Generating Complex; n A local history collection including the 1921 swimming baths and Nogo Cottage; n Displays of agricultural and road maintenance machinery used in the development of the central west. LONGREACH POWERHOUSE GENERATING COMPLEX The Generating Complex comprises a series of large interconnected galvanised iron sheds housing 10 massive engines installed between 1948 and 1971 and a unique gas production system that was a first for Australia and later incorporated elsewhere in the Australian electrical industry. The delivery of power to the town and eventually the outlaying areas
was a local initiative of the Shire Council and run under the Longreach Electric Authority. Power was first generated from this site in 1921. The operation was taken over in 1966 by the Central West Regional Electricity Board. The station ceased to operate in September 1985 when this area was linked to the State-wide grid. LOCAL HISTORY, SWIMMING BATHS AND NOGO COTTAGE A growing collection of local history is housed in the former Office of the Central West Regional Electricity Board built in 1966. The collection contains memorabilia from the early settlement of the region and the remains of the School of Arts Museum, a collection of office equipment from local business houses and a memorable stroll back to early school days. Outside you will find the original swimming baths of the town installed in 1921 and filled at first with water from the adjacent bore (sunk in 1897). They operated until 1964 and were then used as cooling ponds for the power station. To the back of the complex is Nogo Cottage. The cottage is part of the original homestead of Nogo Station built in 1918. A portion was relocated to the eastern boundary of the property with the intention of using it as a boundary riders cottage. A downturn in the rural economy meant the cottage was never used. Today it depicts family living conditions in Western Queensland circa 1938-1950.

It’s probably no surprise that ‘Smithy’ and the team think they have the best job in the world. They are passionate about Outback Queensland and love sharing the Outback Queensland story.
QANTAS FOUNDERS MUSEUM On 16 November 1920 a small airline was established. Its name was Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Service or QANTAS. The early founders and staff of this company had a vision for the airline to service and connect the remote and isolated parts of Outback Queensland and the Northern Territory. Little did they know how the airline would grow. Qantas held its first Board Meeting in Winton in 1921 and the base was then shifted to Longreach where the now National Heritage-listed Qantas Hangar was completed in August 1922, just in time for the first scheduled passenger flight in November 1922. Qantas Founders Museum is a not for profit organisation, dedicated to telling the story of Qantas, from its early days in Outback Queensland to present day.

Tours of the Qantas aircraft including the Boeing 747 and 707 are scheduled each day and provide an inside glimpse to the many secrets and stories of these great aircraft. Specific tours will also offer you the chance to sit in the cockpit and if you are up for a bit of excitement, strap on a harness and walk out on the wing of our Boeing 747 Jumbo Jet. These tours are often in demand so be sure to book ahead. In the main museum and galleries, follow the history of Qantas through modern

The 1922 National Heritage-listed Qantas Hangar allows you to step back in time to the early days of Qantas, where the airline had to overcome many trials and the tyranny of distance. Learn about the history and significance of the Qantas Hangar through the Museum’s daily guided tours. The Museum’s aviation themed McGinness’ Restaurant is open daily and offers a wide selection of delicious meals, drinks and coffee during your visit. Before leaving make sure you visit our Founders Store with a great choice of distinctive souvenirs, clothing, jewellery, books and Qantas memorabilia.

THE AUSTRALIAN STOCKMAN’S HALL OF FAME The Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame and Outback Heritage Centre is Australia’s premier outback heritage institution. Since its opening in 1988, the Hall of Fame has played host to over one million interstate and international visitors – providing each one with a spectacular outback experience. The museum, stunningly constructed from timber, stone and corrugated iron, is truly reminiscent of the Outback. With its unique design, the Hall of Fame stands comfortably amongst the rugged yet vibrant rural landscape. Inside the Centre’s five themed galleries they proudly display the history behind some of Australia’s greatest and bravest explorers, stock workers, pastoralists and Aborigines. The exhibits comprising an eclectic mix of objects, images, touch screens, audio-visual presentations and open displays, allow visitors to interpret the outback story in their own unique way. The Hall of Fame grounds are also home to other amazing sights. The grounds that once held flourishing rose gardens are now a beautiful walk with amazing poetry telling stories of outback life. The Pioneer’s Hut also holds special value, the hut being built by hand by R.M. Williams himself.

The ‘Hugh Sawrey’ art gallery was named for the man who envisioned this goliath project in 1974 and is full of stunning one of a kind artworks that depict rural life. The Hall offers a wide range of refreshments and snacks at the Wool Bale Café to cater for even the most famished of travellers. The Stockman’s Show is also a must-see, with local stockmen sharing their skills and local knowledge in a show you won’t forget.

Just outside you’ll spot a mind-blowing line-up of machinery, aka Machinery Mile. Inspect the handywork of our Aussie tradesmen and appreciate the enormous skill required to build these prized machines back in the day. Eyeball the 1917 Ruston Proctor Tractor, one of only three left in the world, and a big Excavator driven by a three-horse powered steam engine. This outdoor museum is definitely one of a kind.
Make sure you show the kids around Langenbaker House circa 1890s. Apart from the fact that barely a stick of the original furniture has been moved, they’ll be very surprised to learn that it housed Mum, Dad and 11 children! Access is by guided tour only. It’s a great story. CAPTURE THE WATER A great example of bush craftsmanship ingenuity can be seen at The Twelve Mile, just 12 miles (20km) south of Ilfracombe. Thousands upon thousands of naturally formed flagstones were carefully sorted and meticulously placed together to form a leakproof reservoir guaranteed to retain precious water. Just imagine the time and patience needed to construct this stone pitched overshot back in the 1890s. It’s believed that Chinese tradesmen may have contributed special skills and worked on this project. The

site was favoured by the Cobb and Co run as a watering stop for tired horses. SOAK IN THE ARTESIAN It’s not every day that you get to soak in a prehistoric spa. By this we mean water from the Great Artesian Basin, one of the largest underground fresh-water reservoirs in the world. There is strong scientific evidence to prove that these waters are ancient, possibly millions of years old. Imagine the therapeutic benefits of these mineral waters. And, the good news is that you can try it for yourself at Ilfracombe’s Artesian Spa in Memorial Park. Bring the family and enjoy the swimming pool, children’s playground and barbecue facilities. COLLECT SOME CLASSICS Do you have a passion for Victorian glass and Antique Banquet Lamps? The creators of Ilfracombe Antiques and Collectables love and cherish the work of historical artisans. You’ll discover many one-of-a-kind items sure to be a talking point when you return home. Before you visit, it’s recommended that you check opening hours. At the Jackson Collection you’ll discover a collection of treasures by brothers Hilton and Ike Jackson. There’s literally thousands of bottles and other rarities on display. More than 30,000 bottles form Hilton’s collection and more than 120 weapons, flags, uniforms and helmets have been assembled by Ike. While not for sale, these are certainly a classic collection! ENGAGE WITH THE COMMUNITY At the heart of every great town is a tight-knit community and Ilfracombe is no exception. Visitors are invited to join in local activities and events while in the region. Consider testing your skills on the 18-hole golf course or perhaps a round of clay target shooting at the monthly meet. The annual Speed Shears event is held every Easter Saturday taking the lyrics ‘click go the shears’ to a whole new level of speed and agility. If the sport of Kings is more your style, save the date for the Ilfracombe Races held annually in July. It’s a full day’s entertainment with Country Races, Fashions on the Field, an Undie Run (only in the outback) and live music until late.

DELVE INTO THE BARCOO
There’s something about Isisford and the Outer Barcoo. It’s been the inspiration for many an Australian poet including Banjo Paterson. The magnificent two storey Clancy’s Overflow Hotel was said to have been re-named in honour of Banjo’s iconic poem. If you are interested in stories of how places came to be by default, then plan a visit to Whitman’s Museum. Put quite simply, the Whitman brothers broke an axel while attempting to cross the Barcoo. They decided to settle on the banks of the river and proceeded to establish a hotel, butcher’s shop, store and saddlery to service surrounding stations. Many of the original buildings still stand today. It’s easy to picture life in more gentler times as you stroll Isisford’s heritage streetscape.
Oma Waterhole is one of many permanent waterholes fed by the much-celebrated Barcoo River. It’s a favourite recreation spot for lovers of camping, fishing and most things water related. There’s even a boat ramp. Overnight campers appreciate access to the hot showers and toilet facilities. Find it on the Isisford Yaraka River Road, just 16km from Isisford.

It’s hard to miss the Outback’s biggest Yellowbelly glistening in the sunlight as you arrive into town. It measures 12 metres long and stands a lofty five metres high. Look closely and you’ll discover windmill parts, corrugated iron and thousands of pop rivets gathered from surrounding properties. This impressive metal art sculpture is a celebration of the Yellowbelly Fishing Competition held annually on the last weekend of July. The event is held at Oma Waterhole and it draws masses of keen anglers from across the country.
Back in town, saunter down to the Barcoo Weir, also a popular camping site. It was built back in 1934 to provide greater water security for the community. A pipeline linking Oma Waterhole to the Weir was constructed in 1960. No doubt a much more appealing water source for the locals than in earlier times when water was sourced from rain catchment or by hauling supplies from the local waterholes. TASTE THE COUNTRY FLAVOURS Whether you prefer to self-cater or let someone else do the cooking, you’ve a number of options in town. Restock your supplies at Ando’s Food Mart or enjoy great coffee and lunchtime delights at the Outer Barcoo Interpretation Centre Café. Make sure you call in and have a cold one at the Golden West Hotel offering a full bar, beer on tap plus tasty pub meals. Relax in the beer garden or chat to the friendly publicans. There’s a story or two to be told!
OUTER BARCOO INTERPRETATION CENTRE - DISCOVER AN ANCIENT CROCODILE Did you know that the evolutionary ancestor of all crocodilians lived 98-95 million years ago? Visit the Outer Barcoo Interpretation Centre to view a life-sized replica of ‘Isisfordia Duncani’; it predates the first recorded appearance of true crocodiles by over 30 million years! The first fossils of Isisfordia were found in the mid-1990s by the former Deputy Mayor of Isisford, Ian Duncan, after whom the species is named. Researchers claim that Isisfordia was only a metre long and would have lived in a swampy river delta that opened into a large inland sea. There’s plenty more to the story along with other fossil discoveries, so be sure to visit the centre when you’re in town. Information Centre and Café - Open April to October, Mon to Fri 9am to 4pm. November to March, Mon to Fri 9am to 3pm. Weekends vary during the season, please check notice board or Facebook.

PINPOINT THE BEGINNING
EMMET DOUBLE THE POPULATION Travel with a friend to Emmet and you will instantly double the population. That’s right, there are currently two residents calling Emmet home. It was once a thriving town built around a railway siding with a population of 30. Emmet became the second ‘water stop’ for steam trains travelling west from Blackall. As with many ‘water stops’ along new railways, it grew into a new settlement. Before you leave town (and half the population) read the town’s full ‘boom and bust’ story inside the revamped railway station and old store. JUMP INTO NATURE Drive 70km from Emmet and you’ll enter Idalia National Park, home to the yellow-footed rock-wallaby. The park is one of only seven small pockets of land in Australia where you’re likely to spot this largest of wallabies. It’s also the most
colourful – brown and yellow ringed tail, yellow paws, white underbelly and white stripes on its flanks, hips and cheeks. If you get too close, expect to see the wallaby thump its feet to warn others. Keen twitchers will be excited to learn that a number of rare bird species call Idalia home including plum-headed finches, eastern yellow robins and speckled warblers. WALK AND EXPLORE Pack your day pack and your walking poles if you’re eager to delve deeper into this 144,000-hectare park. Visitors to Idalia can choose from five different walking trails graded from Easy to Difficult. Enjoy wide-sweeping views from Emmet Pocket Lookout, visit an old mustering camp and stockyards or walk to the wave-shaped cliff overhang. Camping is permitted at Monks Tank camping area. 3 0 • EX P ER I E N C ELON G R E AC H.COM . AU
You could be correct in saying that Yaraka ‘grew on the sheep’s back.’ The region began as a large paddock filled with prized Merino sheep belonging to the massive Milo Sheep Station. It came into its own when the State Government split up the Milo leases. The town was officially founded in 1917 with the opening of the rail line from Emmet. The new station was named Yaraka (the Indigenous name for white spear grass) and ultimately became the end of the line. JOURNEY TO THE END OF THE LINE Make sure you pop into the End of the Line Museum housed in the original railway station. While there, you’ll learn about the Great Western Rail project and how it

impacted Yaraka. If you love stories about trains and the railway, then you won’t want to miss this attraction. Along with the stories, there are some really interesting artefacts from Yaraka’s days as a railway town. Let’s face it, it’s not every day that you travel to the ‘end of the line.’ AMPLIFY THE AWESOMENESS Have you ever witnessed a view that left you absolutely gobsmacked? The 360-degree outlook from Mount Slowcombe will leave you shaking your head in disbelief, wondering why so few people are aware of this gem. Join the daily sunset tour from Yaraka Hotel for the short 8km drive to the lookout. Access is easy via a sealed road winding its way to the top, so drive yourself if you prefer. There’s even an electric barbecue, covered seating
and a ‘loo with a view’! Take your favourite nibbles and drinks for a spectacular sunset. CHILL OUT AND CHAT It’s not unusual for overnight visitors to extend their stay in Yaraka. This probably has a lot to do with the local publicans who also run the accommodation and camping ground. A personal welcome to town is more the norm than not. You’re sure to be introduced to other happy travellers as you enjoy a cool ale in the bar. Stay at the hotel or just a stone’s throw away are powered caravan sites, tennis court and a pristine swimming pool. This standard in-ground swimming pool has a million-dollar view of the beautiful Yang Yang Ranges. What better place to cool off and relax in the Outback. Be sure to fuel up at the general store before you leave.
MUSE WITH THE MASTERS ‘On the Outer Barcoo where the churches are few, And men of religion are scanty, On a road never cross’d ‘cept by folk that are lost, One Michael Magee had a shanty.’ About an hour south-west of Yaraka is a turn-off to the ruins of Magee’s Shanty. According to local folklore, Banjo Paterson wrote the iconic poem ‘A Bush Christening’ at this very site. Nearby are the ruins of a Cobb & Co pub and the lonely grave of goldminer Richard Magoffin who perished in 1885 chasing his fortune. To access the area, you’ll cross a vast clay pan, so be prepared to kick up some dust! Yaraka Hotel operates a tour to the Shanty if you’d prefer not to drive. Check tour details with the publicans on arrival in town.

The outback is as prosperous, tough and unforgiving as it ever was. It’s where hard yakka, guts and resilience built our nation’s identity and why the great Australian stockman – the legend of the bush - became our national hero.
THE STOCKMAN’S LIFE LIVE SHOW is your best chance to get down in the dust with us, hear the stories and meet our working dogs, learn about bush skills and get to know more about the stockman’s deep connection to the land and the livestock they care for. (Every day at 11am except Fridays)
The enduring journey of the stockman, the challenges and demands, and the evolution of this epic industry continue to this day. In honour of that stoic outback spirit, 2020 will see the Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame introduce a stunning multimilliondollar transformation.
Our brilliant new cinematic experience will transport you through history in a tribute to our pioneers of the outback. All your senses will come alive to the movement and soundscape as you journey alongside the early bush custodians, through the generations to now.
THE STOCKMAN’S NIGHT OUT LIVE – DINNER, SHOW & MUSIC is a must-do event! You’ll be thoroughly entertained while you enjoy a sumptuous two course home cooked Outback BBQ dinner. It’s a bit like being in a country pub when the shearers get paid – unexpected, entertaining and does not always go to script. Relax around the traditional homestead, revisit the art of conversation around our family table and live the life of the stockman and his family. It’s a great night out!
Like nothing you have seen before, our leading-edge technology will awaken you to the hardships, passion, bush comradery and industry changes that have shaped the industry and made our country great.
We don’t stop there. In planning to bring you a state of the art museum, with exceptional galleries, displays and entertainment, The Stockman’s Hall of Fame will bring the stockman’s experience to life with the launch of two new LIVE shows.
Our famous Stockman’s Pie Floater lunch is also a must. Grab a beer in our fully licensed cafe and afterwards treat yourself to a unique shopping experience where you can buy that perfect outback memento. Open 7 days a week.
