Travel Tips First things first: Queensland Country is an impressive region - and in more ways than one! It is a collection of ten sub-regions, each with a reputation for authentic country experiences, so you’ll want to plan what to do geographically.
CLIMATE
If you’re heading from Brisbane, Toowoomba is an easy day trip; however, destinations like Stanthorpe, Dalby and the Bunya Mountains are best enjoyed with an overnight stay. Further afield, such as Carnarvon Gorge, you’ll want to saddle up for a longer road trip or possibly fly there from Brisbane. One thing is for sure though, with a full weekend under your belt (or a little longer), the region offers endless possibilities for the perfect country escape.
Visit in Winter to enjoy a cosy cottage with a fireplace for those frosty mornings, (sometimes even bringing in snowfall), hunt for truffles or delight in distinct wine varietals in the heart of Queensland's wine country.
HOLIDAY PERIODS
Holiday periods are based around seasons, climate, major events, school and public holidays. Prices and availability fluctuate accordingly. For further information on school and public holidays in Queensland, visit education.qld.gov.au Low Period: Summer (December – February) Shoulder Period: Autumn (March – May) (October - November) High Period: Winter/Spring (June – September)
Queensland Country is Queensland's only destination where you can experience ALL SEASONS! Changing dramatically each quarter, you'll discover an array of varying adventures to suit!
Visit in Summer for sub-tropical heat that can be relieved in freshwater swimming holes, lakes, cascading waterfalls, and fields of sunflowers. Frolic amongst the strawberry fields and apple orchards. Nights can still get chilly though, so make sure to pack a light coat. Visit in Autumn to witness tree-lined streets painted in vivid reds and oranges and enjoy freshly harvested apples, grapes and other local produce including seasonal brews at the many artisanal breweries and distilleries. Visit in Spring for a floral blockbuster show, which even has its own festival to celebrate the season - The Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers. Experience the tree-lined streets of the quaint country towns transcend into a purple oasis with jacarandas in bloom. For further climate information, please visit Australian Bureau of Meteorology bom.gov.au
While there are events year-round in Queensland Country the largest number of events fall between August and October which we like to refer to as our Events Season. Take a look at our events calendar on page 68 to start planning!

Key Moments HARVEST CALE NDAR
SUNFLOWER SEASON (December – April)
Sunflower fields are a sight to behold, where paddocks transform into fields of gold as they stand tall in bloom. While you can find sunflower fields across the state, Queensland Country is a region that truly shines. However, it's important to know where to find them and how to respectfully visit them. Sunflowers typically bloom from January to March, but are highly weather dependent so bloom season can vary. While some fields come to life as early as November or December, later crops can still be seen at Easter. The bloom period typically lasts for about three to four weeks, so timing is essential. A field that was vibrant one week might be past its prime the next. It's a combination of good timing and a bit of luck to catch the sunflowers at their best. Remember to tread carefully when visiting these fields, as they grow in the farmlands and crop fields of hardworking Queenslanders. The best way to show your admiration is by observing the sunflowers from a distance, or attending designated open days. Contact the QCT team for up-to-date info on where blooming sunflower fields may be.
FUN FACT: Goondiwindi Region alone produces over 80,000 hectares of cotton each year.
APPLE SEASON
(February – June)
Did you know all of Queensland’s apples are grown in the Southern Downs & Granite Belt? You can even pick your own bushel at Eastern Colour Farm in Applethorpe or Nicoletti Orchards, Pozieres. Both family-owned farms offer picking experiences in the months of March to May, where guests can stroll amongst the trees, take photos with the apple blossoms and pick the perfect bunch. Don’t forget to call in advance to check if the apples are ripe for picking.
SORGHUM SEASON (February - March)
While we might save the sorghum taste testing for the prime beef found in Queensland Country, driving past endless orange-washed sorghum fields is an experience not to be missed. Embark on a scenic drive with the whole family and time your “I spy with my little eye…” with the start of the rustic orange fields for maximum wow-factor and praise from the kids. Trust us, there’ll be no shortage of sorghum to spy.
Did you know Queensland Country produces upwards of one million tonnes of sorghum in a single season?
COTTON SEASON (March - April)
Fields of white aren’t reserved for the Northern Hemisphere’s snow season. Each Autumn, you can see white fields that are almost indistinguishable from the fluffy clouds above as cotton crops burst into bright white, fluffy bloom along the highways towards Goondiwindi and Dalby. To experience Queensland Country cotton at its finest, point the bonnet towards Goondiwindi in the prime growing time of March to early April.
12
STRAWBERRY SEASON (October - May)
October to May sees two things in Queensland Country: good weather and great strawberries. With mild temperatures creating perfect growing conditions for strawberries, there’s no better time for an agricultural outing with a side of sweetness. To pick your own punnet, plug Ashbern Farms into maps, where the whole family can enjoy these fruits fresh from the field. Time your trip with the growing season of October to May, where Ashbern Farms open their gates for you to pick your own strawberries for as little or as long as you like. Entry to the farm is free, but your freshly picked punnet will be priced on weight. For a double fruity experience, head to Eastern Colour in Applethorpe. This familyowned farm offers both apples and strawberries for picking pleasure, ticking two items off the fruit salad checklist. Pick your own fruits run on weekends from March to May, with strawberry picking priced per kilo.
GRAPE SEASON
(December – March)
With such fine wines originating in Queensland Country, it comes as no surprise that our grapes are wonderfully sweet too. With more than 50 vineyards alone in the Granite Belt wine region, vines with large plump grapes aren’t hard to encounter.
FUN FACT: Chinchilla produces 25% of Australia’s watermelons
WATERMELON SEASON (December – February)
Dial the novelty and sweetness levels up to 10 during watermelon season and head for Chinchilla, the melon capital of Australia. Why novelty? When you’re not munching on a locally grown melon, we bet you’ll be snapping a family selfie with the Chinchilla giant watermelon statue at the entrance to town. The highlight of melon growing season (December to February) comes with the biennial melon festival, which is where the whole town and over 20,000 visitors don their melon helmets to celebrate this sweet fruit.
The best hands on experience is found in March in the form of the Stanthorpe Apple and Grape Harvest Festival. This biennial festival has been "crushing it" since 1966, serving produce, delicious dishes and endless entertainment.
WHEAT SEASON
(September - October)
Golden hour takes on a new meaning in wheat season for Queensland Country, where the only thing more stunning than the sunsets are the golden tipped wheat fields. Set the kids' screen-free period of the drive to coincide with the wheat fields spanning across Toowoomba Region from mid-September to October.
LAVENDER SEASON
(November – January)
Catch the best of purple flower season between mid-November and mid-December, where the kids can roam the rows and rows of purple lavender, while you sit back to take in the sights and scents.
TRUFFLE SEASON (June - August)
For those who like to get their hands dirty, take a treasure hunt for truffles in the harvesting months of June to August. Situated in Ballandean in the Granite Belt is The Folly Truffles, Queensland's first commercial truffle farm, where visitors can experience a truffle hunt firsthand. To catch the main attraction, join a truffle hunt, where you’ll follow specially trained truffle sniffer dogs in the search for the elusive fungi, before triumphantly digging up your own clump of truffle.

Everything Else... When the open roads are calling, Queensland Country provides the perfect answer. With its proximity to Brisbane metro amenities, ease of travel, and wellmaintained highways, our region ticks all the boxes for a wholesome country drive holiday – without too much of the grunt work. Whether travelling for a weekend or a week, before hitting the road, here are some travel tips we would suggest having tucked into your back pocket to make your trip the best (and safest) possible.
VISITOR INFORMATION CENTRES (VICs)
The perfect spots to pull up stumps, stretch the legs, connect with the friendly locals and gather some insider tips on what to do, where to go and who to see. You’ll find an endless array of local spoils, as well as permits, maps, brochures and guides to take with you. Locations for all accredited VICs can be found at the back of the guide.
PACK THE ESSENTIALS
Favourite snacks? Tick. Road trip playlist? Tick. Safety plan? … When travelling on country roads and highways, conditions can sometimes be unpredictable. It is always best to be prepared by packing the car with road trip essentials including maps of the area, first aid kit, plenty of water, a spare tyre, a good toolbox, a radio and torch so you’re prepared for any occasion.
CHECK THE WEATHER
Queensland is known for their days being beautiful one day and perfect the next. We echo those sentiments here in Queensland Country, however we also fully exercise our right to have the best of every world, or in our case, season! As we are such a diverse destination, temperatures in each season vary depending on where you are, making travel perfect year-round in most areas. Weather conditions in Queensland Country can also be prone to changing rather quickly. Rainstorms, thunderstorms, intense heat and even snow are all possible occurrences, and this means road conditions can change almost daily.
BE CAUTIOUS ON THE ROADS
Take extreme care when passing and overtaking road trains, heavy vehicles and caravans. Ensure you have a clear line of sight, allow plenty of room and be prepared to move over to the side to overtake. Be cautious in wet conditions as road verges are often soft and slippery, so when pulling to the left, keep your right wheels on the bitumen and move slowly to avoid being bogged.
WATCH OUT FOR WILDLIFE
There is something truly wholesome about travelling along winding backroads and scenic highways, however, make sure to keep your eyes peeled for some quintessential country characters such as livestock and Kangaroos. Most active at dawn and dusk, Kangaroos and Wallabies love grazing on the edges of the road. Where possible, schedule peak driving times to middle of day and avoid early morning and evening.
TIME YOUR TRIP WITH AN EVENT
Queensland Country is home to an abundance of hero events scattered throughout our region. From events focused on harvest seasons, cultural extravaganzas right down to just the plain quirky, there is something for everyone on our annual events calendar. Plan your next trip around one for the ultimate country experience.
TAKE REGULAR BREAKS
As the saying goes, “It’s not the destination, it’s the journey” – Ralph Waldo Emerson. With any long drive, regular breaks are essential. We recommend planning scheduled stops along your country drive to not only ensure you are not travelling too far in one day, but also so you can see and experience more of our beautiful Queensland Country. Remember, stop as soon as you become tired.
If your car runs on Autogas (LPG) or is electric, be aware, LPG and EV charging stations are not available at all service stations.

Queensland Country Wineries GRANITE BELT
Granite Belt Wine Country is one of Australia’s highest-altitude wine regions and produces elegant cool-climate wines. The lowest point is 700m above sea level and peaks at 1,200m. The cool, high altitudes allow the grapes to enjoy a longer growing season, resulting in wine that is medium-bodied, fresh with refined tannins, impressive flavours and moderate alcohol levels. With over 50 boutique wineries in the region, the main question is which ones to visit.
Scan the QR code for our top suggestions:
STRANGE BIRDS
While we all have our favourite wine, Merlot, Chardonnay, you name it, the Granite Belt is best known for the more unusual wine varieties. Known as Strange Birds, the varieties represent less than 1% of total bearing vines in Australia.

SOUTH BURNETT
The South Burnett is one of Queensland’s youngest wine regions, but in just over 30 years has over 800 acres of vines producing top-quality wine each year. The region’s climatic similarities to the Mediterranean (warm Summers, mild Winters), has allowed for the growth of unique varieties including Alberino, Sangiovese and Fiano, however, the unassuming Verdelho variety has brought the most success to the region, with many prestigious awards won as a result.
