REEL FISHING with Jason Kidd of Inshore Fishing Charters When is the best time of year to go fishing in The Mackay Region? The start of August to end of October. Barramundi and other estuary species start firing up in the creeks, and the pelagic species enter our inshore water. It is also a good time of year for our offshore islands and reefs with usually good weather conditions. What’s the key to a successful fishing trip? Planning for suitable tides, having all your fishing tackle and safety equipment, having contingency plans in place, and reading the
conditions are all contributing factors to a successful fishing trip – and a bit a luck doesn’t go astray!

It was a big hike to get there and then I made my dad blow up a giant pineapple, so he was a bit exhausted, but my sister and I had loads of fun floating around the waterhole, and playing on the rocks and in the rapids.”

Tantalising fresh produce, hidden cafés in the rainforest and real paddock-to-plate experiences, The Mackay Region has a delightful food culture around every corner. FOR THE LOVE OF FOOD with Trudie Bishop from The Family Table (home of Gather) What is Mackay best known for in terms of local produce? We are best known for our seafood and tropical fruits in summer but the quality and the variety of produce that we have in our region all year round is incredible and it just keeps growing. Why buy food and ingredients from local farmers? You can’t go past the freshness! Most of the produce that we buy is picked that day or the day before so it lasts a lot longer and it also reduces the food miles with less travel. There is also the added benefit of

With a host of shops and takeaway restaurants, it’s easy to be prepared for a long stay. In fact, you may never want to leave.
This pretty headland provides a beautiful backdrop for photos while a family-friendly resort offers accommodation, recreation activities and cocktails by the pool with live music. The area is also home to spectacular real estate.

SARINA & SURROUNDS
From breezy coastal living to sugar cane and cattle farms, the Sarina and surrounding areas packs a punch with its diverse and picturesque offerings. FIELD OF DREAMS PARKLAND Situated just off the Bruce Highway, the Sarina Field of Dreams Parkland is a historical and educational hub, providing the perfect place to recharge and plan a fun-filled Mackay Region adventure.
These buildings offer accredited visitor information services and high-quality arts and crafts from local artisans. A state-of-the-art Mackay Region Visitor Information Centre will be open at the Field of Dreams Parkland in the second half of 2018.
SARINA HISTORICAL CENTRE
SWEET EDUCATIONAL FUN
Built in 1923 as a Presbytery for the Catholic Church, the building was later turned into a convent for nuns until 1987 and went on to become a parish centre, respite care centre and now historical centre. The Centre holds several collections including reflections on the region’s sugar cane, gold, coal and rail industries, as well as a look back at the school system, old furniture and fashion displays and more.
The Sarina Sugar Shed is a multi award-winning attraction and Australia’s only miniature sugar mill and distillery. The tours are an educational and interactive way to learn about the pioneers of the sugar cane industry, watch how sugar is extracted from cane and taste a range of sweet delights including fairy floss, rum, speciality liqueurs, chutneys, sauces, fudge and more.
VISITOR INFORMATION CENTRE
A small exhibition space for local artists or groups, it opens during exhibitions and collections range from paintings to hand-woven silk and other artworks.

Fringed by an esplanade with park and barbecue facilities, Sarina Beach has sweeping gold sand, gentle waves and is a popular spot for nesting turtles. Nearby beachside accommodation and restaurants make this a great spot to stay for a few days. Grasstree Beach. Grasstree Beach gives off a wonderful beachside feel, with sweeping trees, a nice shallow bay for swimming and plenty of public facilities adjacent to the beach.
Campwin Beach. Campwin Beach shares the same stretch of coastline as Sarina Beach, with Leeper Reef and adjoining rock flats separating the two at low tide. Oysters and mussels can be found on the rocks and it’s popular for fishing straight from the beach. Salonika Beach. This 2 kilometre stretch of beach is ideal for swimming and relaxing with views out to Victor Island, just offshore. The area is well preserved, meaning plenty of wildlife experiences including black cockatoos, sea eagles and bush turkeys.

ISAAC INLAND
Brimming with country hospitality, intriguing history and unspoilt nature, the Isaac Region’s inland areas provide incredible outback experiences you won’t find anywhere else. OUTBACK HERITAGE Giddy up in Nebo. In the cattle-grazing town of Nebo, the heritage-listed pub built in 1862 is the ideal place to get some great tucker or visit the Historic Nebo Musuem for an insight into the town’s history. Grab your hats, dust off your boots and roll up your swag for the annual Nebo Rodeo. It’s the town’s largest event, attracting competitors from across the country and has been touted as one of the best rodeo events in Australia. Ghosts of the past. Visit the abandoned mining town of Mount Britton, a 35-minute drive northeast of Nebo. Founded in 1880, Mount Britton was once a thriving town with a population of 1500. Isaac Regional Council maintain markers on the original streets, and display historic photographs on information boards to give you a glimpse of the town in the 1880s. Fossick for gold in Clermont. Clermont is one of the most historic towns in northern Australia, with a colourful past, rich in drama and laced with tragedy. 24 mackayregion.com
Visit the Clermont Historical Centre to hear of the region’s interesting past, and tour the town to discover the 1916 Flood Memorial areas (including the Piano in the Tree), an eerie reminder of the height of one of Australia’s worst floods. Go for a fossick on one of Clermont’s General Permission Areas and try your luck at striking gold.
OUTBACK NATURE Wolfang Peak. At 572 metres, Wolfang Peak is one of the most popular peaks of the range and takes approximately one hour to summit. Once there you will experience a 360° view of the surrounding farmland and National Park offering some of the most unique panoramas in Queensland. Lord’s Table Mountain. Take in the sweeping views of the 320-metre high Lord’s Table Mountain with its flat-topped plateau. There’s a picnic table and rest area at the scenic base. Lake Elphinstone. INTERVIEW WITH MACKAY MAYOR GREG WILLIAMSON How long have you been living in Mackay? I am a fifth generation Mackay local and have always lived here. I spent 12 out of the last 20 years working out of Brisbane and doing the weekly commute, but the family has always lived here. Why do you choose to live in Mackay? My ancestors were amongst the earliest settlers in the hamlet that came to be known as Mackay. Great, Great Grandfather Robert Williamson was a stone mason from Edinburgh who arrived in Mackay around 1870, and on the other side Great, Great Grandfather Patrick McKenney was a saddler from County Tyrone Ireland. McKenney arrived in Mackay in 1864 – just two years after the township was established – and was on the first Mackay Council in 1869. Both sides of the family selected Mackay as the start of their new life, and obviously stayed. What makes Mackay such a great place to live? It is, in my opinion, the most liveable regional community in Australia with 31 beaches, ideal climate, friendly people, all the facilities you need, a sporting culture and inclusive community focus. What does the perfect weekend in The Mackay Region look like? Clear blue skies, balmy breeze, lots of sport on Saturday, beach lazing on Sunday, punctuated by one or two free community events.
