ROAD SAFETY INFORMATION ONLINE: roadsafety.transport.nsw.gov.au Do you know you’re four times more likely to have a fatal fatigue crash if you’re driving between 10pm and dawn? That’s because your body’s circadian rhythms are programming you to sleep. Driving while sleep deprived, especially late at night and at dawn, increases the risk of having a ‘microsleep’ and losing control of your vehicle. If you fall into a microsleep and nod off at 100 km/h, you’ll travel 100 metres in just four seconds, unconscious. Don’t ignore the early warning signs of fatigue: Yawning Poor concentration Tired eyes
Restlessness Drowsiness Slow reactions

Explore the rugged island of wilderness that is the Mt Kaputar National Park, an ancient footprint left behind by a series of volcanic eruptions between 17 and 21 million years ago. Rising spectacularly from surrounding flat agricultural plains, millions of years of erosion have forged this volcanic wilderness into the Nandewar Ranges you see today. Whether you’re a nature lover, photographer, bushwalker, camper or simply seeking a little solitude, prepare to be spellbound by the grandeur of this landscape of lava terraces and volcanic plugs. The National Park protects a wide variety of plant communities, including semiarid woodlands, wet eucalypt forests and subalpine heaths. It is also home to a host of animal species, and provides a haven for many threatened species – including bats, birds, wallabies and quolls. Keep an eye out for our native pink slug! It often appears after rain, and is unique to Mt Kaputar National Park. For those with time to thoroughly explore the park, two camping areas with hot showers and electric barbecues are available as well as three well equipped cabins at Dawson’s Spring, which can be booked through the NPWS office. Keen to experience an almighty wall of organ pipes without stepping foot inside a church? Then Sawn Rocks, with its towering 40m high pillars is the place to go. Undoubtedly the most iconic reminder of Kaputar’s volcanic past, this basalt rock formation is located in the northern section of Mt Kaputar National Park. As you head north along the Newell Highway, the plains to the west stretch to eternity whilst the furls and rugged peaks of the Nandewar Ranges unfold to the east. Just 3km out of town, turn right onto the picturesque Killarney Gap Road (Bingara Road) and travel a further 33km to the Sawn Rocks carpark. Along the way, on the left, you will pass the fertile paddocks of the IA Watson Grains Research Station. Named after preeminent agricultural scientist Irvine Armstrong Watson, the Research Station is part of the University of Sydney’s Plant Breeding Institute. The site has resources for standard cereal breeding, a grain quality laboratory, glasshouses and controlled environment facilities. From the carpark Sawn Rocks is reached via an easy 750m walking track (disabled access) that meanders through the tall eucalypts, figs and ferns. An observation platform affords stunning views of the intriguing rock formation jutting starkly from the bed of the Bobbiwaa creek. Stairs to the side enable access to the creek bed upon which, outlines of more pillars are visible. This unusual phenomenon is the result of slow and even cooling of molten rock, which enabled individual crystals within the rock to align perfectly with each other.

ROCKY CREEK GLACIAL AREA ALLOW 3Hrs 4WD only
cultural significance
The Rocky Creek Glacial Area is yet another geological wonder to explore. Before you jump in your car and head out there be warned, there is no ice to be seen! Nor will you find any of the typical glacial landform features, such as steep sided, flat bottomed, U shaped valleys. These landform features are the result of glaciers which existed during the last one million years, in the Pleistocene Epoch.
The Rocky Creek glaciation is much older, dating back some 290 million years to the Carboniferous Period. A vast amount of weathering and erosion occurs in over 200 million years, so all the original glacial landscape features have been eroded away and replaced by those typically associated with running water. How then do we know a glacier did exist in this area? The answer lies in the creek bed. It is best to pick a spot down close to the water where flood borne gravels have ground the rock down and left a nice ‘polished’ surface to look at. You will see it is made up of many different sizes and types of stones, all cemented together in a matrix of finer gravels, sand and clay. It is a conglomerate; or to be more exact it is a fluvio-glacial conglomerate. So how did it form? As a glacier flows it gathers and carries with it broken rock material. Eventually all this transported material is deposited at its terminus, that is, the point at which higher temperatures cause the glacier to melt. Of course this is the simplified version!
If you wish to continue this geology lesson pick up a more detailed information leaflet at the Visitor Information Centre in Narrabri or Bingara. And if geology’s not your thing, the glacial area is also a lovely picnic spot and a great place to go for a swim. Camping is permitted in this area although there are no facilities. Please take all rubbish with you. Getting there, head north out of town along the Newell Highway towards Moree. Just 3km out of town, turn right onto the picturesque Killarney Gap Road (Bingara Road) for a further 67km until you reach the Glacial Area on your left.

This striking rock face, towering over the Kamilaroi Highway outside Boggabri, has been known by many names over the years. Local Aboriginals knew it as “Cooloobindi” or “Gagabaayindaay” whilst it was known as “Bullaballakit” in the era when Sir Thomas Mitchell was exploring the Namoi Valley. In Cobb and Co coach days, it was known as “The Rock” and now it goes by “Gin’s Leap”. The widely accepted origins of the current name follow the tragic death of a pair of ill-fated young Aboriginal lovers, a modern day Romeo and Juliet. The young girl, promised to an elder of her tribe, the Gamilaroi (Kamilaroi), ran away with a young Aboriginal man from another tribe. Hotly pursued by Gamilaroi (Kamilaroi) tribesmen, the lovers jumped to their deaths from somewhere along the top of this rock.
Today, Gin’s Leap stands as a silent sentinel over previous grave sites to the right, of four people, Mrs Russell, her 2-year-old son, John James and Mr David and Mrs Maria Grover. There is a picnic area and interpretive sign at the site where visitors can learn more about this iconic site.
BARBERS LAGOON AND BARBERS PINNACLE WHERE Manilla Road, Boggabri cultural significance
Local landmarks Barbers Lagoon and Barbers Pinnacle take their names from George “The Barber” Clarke, a runaway convict who inhabited the area from 1826 to 1831. Clarke had been sentenced to farm work in Singleton in 1825, following an armed robbery conviction. He later escaped and lived in the north west with the Gamilaroi (Kamilaroi) people, who seem to have regarded him as one of their own returned from the dead. Clarke took two Aboriginal wives and wandered the plains stealing cattle. He was caught by the authorities and hanged in 1831.

Barbers Lagoon and Barbers Pinnacle are located on the Manilla Road, just north of Boggabri, after crossing the bridge. Barbers Lagoon is marked by a plaque on the right and notes the approximate location of Clarke’s hut and stockyards. The striking outcrop of rocks on the left, called Tangulda by the Gamilaroi (Kamilaroi) Aboriginal people, is Barbers Pinnacle.

After you cross the Harparary Bridge, take the Maules Creek road and head for “the hills”. Maules Creek is situated at the foothills of the Mt Kaputar National Park and is truly amazing countryside. The rugged and enchanting landscape hides a deep rich black soil, perfectly suited to farming. As a result the region harbours some of the country’s leading cattle studs. Water flows from the mountains, trickling through melaleuca-lined creeks to arrive as clear as crystal. Many beautiful locations along the river provide captivating hideaways to have a picnic or just enjoy the presence of nature. The size and grandeur of the Nandewar Ranges viewed from the Maules Creek area is truly spectacular.
Located approximately 30km north west of Boggabri on the Kamilaroi Highway, Baan Baa had early beginnings as a squatting run. Little remains of this previously bustling railway village which once boasted its own bakery, two general stores, a stock and station agent, butchery, ice cream shop, hotel, two churches and a service station. Only the pub now stands in what is now primarily a grain terminal, feeding in from the rich grain country surrounds. Consequently the sleepy town of Baan Baa starts to buzz during grain harvest. When in Baan Baa, don’t miss the new War Memorial, next to the Hall opposite the pub.

The area has strong historical ties from the 1830s, when it was settled by the early squatters, to the 1950s when Indian trader, Nabob Allem and his family based themselves in Pilliga and peddled their wares in a horse drawn wagon to the grazing families in the western district. Nabob Allem made quite an impression on the town, as is evidenced in an article printed in the Coonamble Times after his death, beginning “Nabob Allem died last Friday. And the people of Pilliga, HIS people, are mourning his loss. For Nabob Allem was the ‘King of the Scrub’, ‘King of Pilliga’, and unofficial Mayor”. When you’ve worked up an appetite the Pilliga Pub, with adjoining accommodation, or the Pilliga Cafe are both great places for a meal, drink, or to rest your head for the night.

cultural significance
One of the iconic landscapes of inland Australia, Pilliga Forest (or sometimes called the Pilliga Scrub) is made up of Pilliga Nature Reserve, Timmallallie National Park, Pilliga West, and East State Conservation Areas. Pilliga is a vast forest that spans more than half a million hectares and features 2,000km of public access trails, so there’s a lot to explore either by walking or car touring. Pilliga Forest is a mixture of eastern and western climates, making it very attractive to birds – more than 230 species have been recorded. You’re bound to see some of that range during your time at the park, and if you keep a close eye out and bring some binoculars, you’ll definitely see even more. Pilliga is one of the few places left in NSW where you can catch sight of the grey-crowned babbler. As you walk or drive, keep your eyes out for some of the park’s resident birds and wildlife, including rare barking owls and malleefowls. Malleefowls live in family groups and roost together in domed nests of sticks. Other birds you may see include glossy black cockatoos, brown treecreepers, regent honeyeaters and red-capped robins. A particularly keen eye will spot the families of koalas who dine and recline on the many eucalypt trees which are found throughout this area. Pilliga Forest supports a vast number of mammals, including swamp wallabies, eastern grey kangaroos, red-necked wallabies, and eastern pygmy possums. Pilliga also has the largest koala population in NSW to the west of the
Great Dividing Range – look for them in the forest’s red gums and the Pilliga box. The scenery within the Pilliga Forest is distinctly unique and makes a trip into the scrub quite an adventure. As you drive across one of the many crisscrossed roads you may come across remnants of the past (chimney stacks, abandoned timber mills and a cobblestone road) and the future (gas wells).
THE SALT CAVES
cultural significance
The Salt Caves area offers a recently revamped picnic area with barbeque’s and toilet facilities, but according to legend the caves were once thirty metres deep, and salt hung in columns like stalactites from the roof. Wild horses, wild cattle and kangaroos were often seen and local women collected the salt to cure their meat. The fire tower offers an incredible bird’s eye view of the entire forest. Enjoy your lunch in the company of the birds at Salt Caves picnic area in Timmallallie National Park. It’s a scenic spot to pause for a picnic or barbecue on your exploration of Pilliga Forest.
Enjoy a hike up the escarpment to the Pilliga Forest lookout tower where you’ll be treated to breathtaking views across the vast Pilliga Forest. On a clear day you can see all the way to the Warrumbungles to the south-east, and Mt Kaputar Park in the north-east. For a shorter stroll, take the 1km walk to Salt Caves Dam, a popular watering hole for the native wildlife and a great spot for birdwatching. The cave itself is an important Aboriginal site and is an excellent example of shelters used by the traditional Gamilaroi (Kamilaroi) people.

Deep in vast Pilliga Forest lies exquisite Dandry Gorge and the magnificent Sculptures in the Scrub. Sculptures in the Scrub walking track, in Timallallie National Park, takes in the award-winning Sculptures in the Scrub, a project that was four years in the making. Each sculpture is the result of an artist collaborating with local Aboriginal Elders and young people on a piece that tells a story of local Aboriginal history and culture. Take some time to look at these works – you’ll find some information about the artist’s background and the methods used to create the sculpture, along with its deeper meaning. Sculptures in the Scrub picnic area and campground is near the walking track, which is a good place to stop if you have time, and you may even see some of the local wildlife. Whether you’re parking the caravan, pulling a camper trailer or pitching a tent, this roomy camping spot has space for them all. If you’re walking the track in spring, you’ll likely be treated to a colourful and vibrant display of wildflowers. While you might glimpse a glossy black cockatoo or the elusive turquoise parrot, grey kangaroos, red-necked wallabies and lace monitors are often spotted along the walk. As the shadows grow long, settle in for a famous outback sunset and cook up a barbecue feast and wait for the overwhelming display of stars.

The indigenous people of Australia have been sharing their stories orally for tens of thousands of years. To this day virtually all Aboriginal history is handed down as oral history. Combining this oldest form of sharing knowledge and culture, with the latest of technology, Narrabri Region brings you Kamilaroi Stories. Kamilaroi Stories allows visitors to connect with Narrabri Region elders via touch screen. Interviews were conducted with three prominent local elders and complied into an impressive interactive installation. From the comfort of the Visitor Information Centre you can sit back and uncover the mysteries of the Kamilaroi language, hear dreamtime stories and learn about age-old traditions.

Wee Waa & District Historical Society Inc was formed in 1987. The Namoi Echo Museum (John Lusarreta Pavilion) was officially opened on Australia Day 2009. The Namoi Echo Museum is home to many wonderful exhibits relating to the local area – the history of agriculture and crops such as cotton, wheat and wool, precious old machinery, spray plane, original 2 row picker, blacksmith’s shop, saddlery and Aboriginal artifacts including 3 mannequins. Schwagers Cottage located on the museum site was originally the sawmillers cabin and was built in the 1880s. The site of the Namoi Echo Museum was a parcel of land from the Racecourse & Showground Trust.
