How to get here By Road

The towns of Blackall and Tambo are located in the heart of Queensland’s central west, half way between Brisbane and Mount Isa, and a day’s drive from the east coast.
QantasLink flies direct from Brisbane to Blackall three times a week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. On other days you can fly into the nearby Charleville, Barcaldine and Longreach and pick up a hire car.

Matilda Way Love a good road trip? BlackallTambo is smack bang in the middle of the Matilda Way. This fully sealed 1812 kilometre highway stretches from the New South Wales border all the way to the Gulf of Carpentaria, from Cunnamulla through to Karumba.
From the East From the central coast, cruise along the Capricorn Way to Barcaldine then head south to Blackall and Tambo. Or, if you revel in a bit of gravel under the wheels, turn off at Alpha for a shorter trip to Tambo or, to reduce your time travel to Blackall, turn off at Jericho.

O
ur Visitor Information Centres are a ‘one stop shop’, stocked full of helpful brochures, maps and great tourist information. Be sure to check onward journey road conditions with the team while you’re there. Both Tambo and Blackall VICs are co-located with the towns’ libraries so ask about the Queensland Rural Libraries’ Tourist Card while there. Joining the library with a tourist card allows you to borrow books, audio books and magazines from one library and return them to another within the network of sixtysix libraries across the State. Blackall Visitor Information Centre is situated in the heart of town and there is plenty of parking just around the corner in Short Street. Inside this modern building the counter is a major talking point. Built from every timber imaginable from across the central west, it is a veritable work of art. If you like a bit of bush camping the Blackall VIC can take your registration and payment for a site along the Barcoo River on the edge of town.

The VIC in Tambo is situated in one of the oldest buildings in town, the heritage listed Historical Courthouse. Located at the eastern end of the town, there is ample street parking for even the largest rigs. Tambo is the oldest town in the west and the VIC is home to the most magnificent quilt, the ‘Rhythm of Life’ created by local ladies to celebrate the town’s sesquicentenary in 2013. Well worth a look, this quilt very cleverly tells the tale of the town from the earliest days of settlement.

It’s Better in Blackall Blackall is a charming outback town, nestled on the banks of the mighty Barcoo River. The close-knit community are proud of their town and enjoy sharing the region’s hidden gems with eager travellers.
A
n attractive township with tree lined streets, Blackall has a population of approximately 1,588 residents. Access to copious quantities of artesian water and a temperate climate allows residents to grow lush gardens and expansive lawns; an oasis in the Outback. Literally growing on the sheep’s back, Blackall began as a thriving outback township. Today, only a handful of properties are still running sheep however the link to the wool industry is still strong. Visit the historic Blackall Woolscour, Ram Park and the memorial to shearing champion Jack Howe. A thriving cattle

industry has replaced the wool industry. You can get a glimpse of the scale of this industry at the Blackall Saleyards, where over 120,000 cattle are sold each year. If you’ve ever heard the saying ‘beyond the black stump’, get yourself to Blackall and see it for yourself. When pioneers were passing through the area, they declared that everything west of where they were (Blackall), was ‘beyond the black stump’. Legend has it ‘anyone who crosses the Barcoo River 10 times is here to stay.’ So it’s a must – come and see why ‘it’s better in Blackall’!
Blackall’s Top Five Blackall’s Historical Woolscour Discover history in action at the Blackall Woolscour, Australia’s last remaining steam operated wool washing plant. Built in 1908 the woolscour was deemed a state of the art facility to prepare wool for market. Its primary role was to remove the lanolin, sweat residue, dust and dirt from the fleece. It operated commercially under steam power for 70 years. The Woolscour is located next to an artesian free-flowing bore, the source of ample hot water for scouring. Daily tours are run by enthusiastic volunteers over the tourist season (May – August). Guided tours operate on the hour, every hour, starting at 9am with the last tour departing at 4pm.

Locals have discovered another more relaxing use for their bore water. At the Blackall Aquatic Centre and Spa you can unwind in the mineral spa; its warm bubbling, therapeutic artesian waters are fed by 58 degree bore water. The spacious 20-seat spa was constructed in 2019 and is proving to be a popular spot for a soak in the soothing mineral waters. If you
prefer to swim some laps, there is also a 50 metre Olympic size pool. Walk-in access and a disabled lift ensures everyone can enjoy the benefits of the artesian water. Just the place to rest, relax and revive after a day’s driving. Check the website for opening times.
Ram Park A visit to Ram Park is a must when visiting Blackall. Under the watchful eye of the big ram, the park is a collection of old buildings filled with displays and stories that bring Blackall’s colourful history to life. Take a step back in time and visit the Navena Homestead, check out the Blackall Railway Station, the rare surviving rail motor from Blackall’s Queensland Ambulance Transport Brigade or take in a lesson at the Yalleroi School House. Strolling through the grounds visitors can visualise how the pioneers tried to tame the outback using a wide array of machinery. Join Stewie, a former stockman for a tour of the park complete with demonstrations of bush craft and his stockmanship skills. Stewie will regale you with a few tales of Blackall and the region, some may just be a bit taller than others.

Blackall Saleyards
Sculpture Trail
Built around the mid-1970s the Blackall saleyards was established as a structure to sell local cattle and has been in operation for many years.
If you like your art alfresco, then you’ll love the Blackall Sculpture Trail.
Today the facility is the major selling centre in western Queensland, sourcing cattle from northern and far western regions, in fact the Blackall Saleyards are the only accredited organic yards in Queensland. Over 120,000 cattle pass through the yards each year. Recent refurbishments and the construction of a superb viewing platform enables visitors to the region to experience a cattle sale first-hand. Cattle sales are usually held every second Thursday and you are welcome to attend and experience all the noise and action of a live sale.
Blackall is known as the Arts Capital of the West, and boasts an outdoor gallery of public artworks created by local and well renowned artists. There’s an incredible sculpture of an Eagle in its Nest made from railway dog spikes, timber and bolts from an old bridge. Another is called The Roly Poly. Located just outside of town the Roly Poly is all about fun and makes for a great photo on sunset. All up, there are nine unique sculptures along the trail. Each piece bares some significance to the town’s cultural or natural history. It’s definitely worth a look. EDGAR TOWNER VC

Everything here is Totally Tambo Step back in time when you arrive in Tambo, enjoy the slower pace and all the history that the oldest town in the Central West has on offer.
T
ambo has a relaxed atmosphere and visitors are encouraged to wander around and enjoy a self-guided walk along the banks of the Barcoo or around the town’s historical buildings. Meet and chat with local volunteers at the town’s heritage Post and Telegraph buildings where you can try your hand at Morse code and learn of the town’s rich history. Take a picnic to the Tambo Dam where an abundance of birds will keep you entertained with their antics. In the middle of town the EE Parr Park has a well-equipped picnic area with a playground popular for little travellers needing to work off excess energy. Across from the park, the Grassland Art Gallery is well worth a visit. This contemporary art space showcases artworks from local and regional artists. Exhibitions change every six to eight weeks so there is always something different to see. A trip to the outback teddy bear capital is not complete without a visit to the Tambo Teddies workshop. Here you’ll be able to see and buy pure wool teddies made on site by talented locals. Make time to wander the attractive main street. Nothing is too far away in this little township and the attractions are all free.

Tambo’s Top Five Tambo Teddies Who would ever think that a teddy bear fit for royalty would have been created in the tiny outback town of Tambo? But these bears are not just for royalty, Tambo Teddies take pride of place in homes all over the world and have made the little town of Tambo (population some 611) the ‘outback Teddy capital of Australia’. Tambo Teddies has literally put Tambo on the map! You can find a soft and cuddly Bickie Bear for your newborn or a fully dressed Mr. Stockman teddy bear with his hat, swag and stock whip. Pop in and watch your bear come to life as they are lovingly made. As their personality emerges, each bear is individually named after a farming property in the Tambo district. Don’t leave town without your own right, royal Tambo Teddy, your friend for life.
Grassland Art Gallery A contemporary cool and inviting exhibition space displaying a
rotating exhibition program of locally produced and curated displays of diverse art works by regional artists and touring exhibitions. A relaxing courtyard connects the Gallery and workshop spaces. Working with Cindy’s Coffee & Gifts (the next shop on the street), board games with coffee and cake delivered will be on offer in the courtyard in 2020. A haven to spend a few hours relaxing and playing board games with your travelling companions. A small shop in the gallery foyer stocks unique handcrafted goods including pewter tableware, art cards, glass art and jewellery. Visitors may find a local landscape, a contemporary work or an item of giftware that will be an exclusive souvenir representative of their Outback trip.

Stay Connected Free WIFI throughout the town
Ben will introduce each of the ‘girls’ and provide a summary of their current racing form. If you can bid high enough at the auction, you can own a brightly coloured chicken for the duration of the race. Eight hens will compete, chasing a little cart filled with tasty delicacies around the course for four laps before the champion chick crosses the finish line. Hilarious fun, but the best part is the chooks are auctioned off to raise money for the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Ben’s chickens race seven days a week from May through to October.
Tambo Dam At the southern end of Tambo, you’ll find the Tambo Dam and parklands. A great place to spend time relaxing on the grassy banks with a picnic or sizzle up a sausage on one of the free barbecues.

The area is a wonderful habitat for water birds and local wildlife. The dam provides many spectacular sunrises reflected across the water and is a bird watcher’s paradise with black swans and cygnets being found at certain times of the year. Pelicans also make this area home for a few weeks of the year as well and brolgas can often be found around the water’s edge.
If you enjoy a nice stroll, then hit the pathway that winds through the trees and leads to an outdoor gym which is free for all to use. This popular walkway connects with the nature walk, the Coolibah Walk, which skirts the Barcoo River. Pull up, rest, relax and enjoy a break.
Tambo Heritage Precinct Discover stories of the oldest town in the west at Tambo’s Heritage Precinct. The buildings were originally the town’s Post and Telegraph Offices, and Tambo played a vital role in the early telegraph system linking the north of Australia with the south. Kick back in a squatter’s chair to listen to locals telling stories of the town’s goats, telephone exchange, Qantas’ only plane crash and old picture theatre on the DVD display. The smaller building houses the Post and Telegraph artefacts including an interactive Morse code display, which you can see and hear in operation as it taps a message out ready to send. While there you can try your hand at signalling – what’s faster, morse code or texting? The Totally Tambo Heritage Group mans the buildings on a volunteer basis and love to have a chat and share their knowledge of Tambo’s history as well as events of today, #totallytambo.

While you’re in the region– get back to nature Discover Tambo’s Wilderness Way. Park your van up in town and head out on this selfdrive tour through an area of rugged beauty, known as the ‘Rooftop of Queensland’.
T
ambo’s Wilderness Way is a 320 kilometre loop and you can take one to two days to complete, depending on the adventure you are after. The road is accessible by conventional vehicles, however, a four-wheel-drive is recommended and adds to the experience! The tour traverses a landscape of deep gorges and vast cliff lines. Enjoy vistas of tangled ranges where the wind and rain have created massive sandstone formations which contrast starkly with the grey-green bush.
Take a slight detour and head into the Salvator Rosa National Park where you can camp on the banks of the Nagoa River and play in the clear waters of Mitchell Springs. A self-guided drive directs you to the park’s most outstanding features, including magnificent towering sandstone formations. Wildflowers add a blast of colour to the landscape in spring. There are plenty of opportunities for birdwatching, photography and great bush walks.

Take the Drive….. along the Barcoo Way WILDERNESS WAY LOOP
Y
our Barcoo Way adventure starts in Tambo, the headwaters of the mighty Barcoo River. Here’s your chance to hit the road, get the red dust under your tyres and really explore the outback. Who doesn’t want to camp beside a billabong, 4wd across a claypan and reel in a champion Yellowbelly? Discover awesome National Parks and incredible raw landscapes. Choose to travel the direct route via the Landsborough Highway and you will travel around 100km to Blackall. From there you can strike out along the Isisford Road or head north for 18km before turning up the Adavale Road – both tracks lead you on to Isisford, Yaraka and the red sand hills of Windorah.
Heading up the Isisford Road you can take a side track and visit Idalia National Park nestled amid the Gowan Ranges. Access to Idalia is suitable for four-wheeldrive only. Take the Isisford Road from Blackall for 42km then turn left into the Yaraka Road. At the Benlidi siding, turn left and follow the ldaliaBenlidi Road for about 34km to the park boundary. Enjoy birdwatching, bushwalking, scenic driving, exploring historical sites and watching wildlife. Pick up a drive guide brochure from the information shelter at Chucksters Bore just 3km from the park entrance.
An alternate route If you really love a bit of an off-road adventure, then consider taking a 4WD side trip along the Langlo-Adavale Track. The scenic Langlo-Adavale Road between Tambo and Blackall is around 200 kilometres and will take approximately one day to complete. See native wildlife and livestock as you pass through a number of local stations. Take care as the track is not fenced and the livestock roam freely. You will need a four-wheel-drive to complete this track and it can become impassable in the wet, so make sure you check road conditions at the VICs before leaving either Blackall or Tambo.

Travelling with the Kids? Younger travellers are well catered for in both Blackall and Tambo.
I
n the centre of Tambo, EE Parr Park features an enclosed playground with climbing frames, swings and see-saws. There’s also a skate park and half basketball court. The Tambo Dam Park has plenty of space for the kids to burn off excess energy. Schedule a stop for lunch and fire up the free barbie. Between September and April, you can cool off in the Tambo pool. Entry is free from 3.30pm daily. Blackall’s pool is open all year round, the beach edge is perfect for toddlers to play in and there is plenty of recreational space for older children. If a swim is not in the plan, Bank’s Park along the main drag has children’s slides and jungle gyms. The large undercover eating area also has free BBQs. Ram Park will give the kids a glimpse of what life was like in days gone by. There are certainly no computers or iPads in the Yalleroi Schoolhouse! If you’re stopping for a while make sure the kids bring their scooters and skate boards, Blackall has a large undercover skate bowl in the park beside the memorial hall on Short St. Don’t forget to capture the memories, take a few family
insta moments at the Roly Poly, Wild’n’Woolly, the People’s Sign and at the only Teddy Bear Crossing sign in Australia. And of course, you can always splash out and buy them their very own Tambo Teddy – that should keep them settled for a few miles!

And the Fur Babies… Those very important family members are well catered for in the Blackall-Tambo region. Staying overnight? In Tambo your fur babies are welcome at Stubby Bend, Tambo Mill Motel & Van Park, Tambo Caravan Park, Tambo Tavern and the Royal Carrangarra Hotel and in Blackall the Blackall Caravan Park, Acacia Motor Inn, Blackall Caravan Park and the Barcoo River Camp are all pet friendly.
