Welcome to the Southern Great Barrier Reef

Set on the Tropic of Capricorn, in Central Queensland, the Capricorn Coast and Rockhampton region is an enticing mix of laidback country hospitality, modern city lifestyle and stunning coastal bays.

T

he Capricorn Coast is an undiscovered paradise. Townships along the Capricorn Coast are surrounded by beautiful stretches of coastline where warm waters lap the sands of secluded beaches. Stretching 95km from Stanage Bay to the mouth of the Fitzroy River, the coast is speckled with small townships, beautiful beaches, fantastic fishing and much more. The coastal life would not be complete without the amazing Keppel Bay Islands, just 30 minutes off the coast of Yeppoon. Snorkel, trek and dive your way around the islands and explore what the Capricorn Coast has to offer. For dramatically coloured reef, Queensland’s most northerly surf beaches, and an affordable, rejuvenating coastal holiday, you just can’t miss the Capricorn Coast. Rockhampton is the business hub of the Capricorn region and is both a gateway to the Queensland Outback and within a stone’s throw of some of Australia’s most unspoiled beaches. Situated on the banks of the mighty Fitzroy River, Rockhampton is renowned for its elegant streetscapes with majestic sandstone buildings. The iconic life-sized bull statues represent the country roots of Rockhampton and its status as the ‘Beef Capital of Australia’. With a wider population of over 112,000, Rockhampton is the best of both city and country life, offering authentic and easy-going country hospitality, as well as city-standard shopping, dining and a wide range of entertainment options. Located 38km west of Rockhampton, and 240m above sea-level, is Mount Morgan – one of the most charming mining towns in Australia. Rising and falling over the hills and valleys, Mount Morgan is full of wooden houses and a history reaching back to the late 1800s. A visit to this historic township is a must!

Rockhampton City Rockhampton is reinventing itself as a sophisticated, cosmopolitan hub, steeped in cultural heritage.

Arts, Culture & Heritage f it’s the arts you’re interested in you will be impressed by the Rockhampton Art Gallery. It houses an extensive permanent collection of works by Australian and Queensland artists, featuring iconic Australian painters Sidney Nolan, Russell Drysdale and Arthur Boyd.

I

Located next to the art gallery, the Pilbeam Theatre is the centre of Rockhampton’s performing arts community and is host to a range of regular performances by local, national and international talent. The National Trust, and the Heritage Commission, have listed many of the sandstone buildings in Quay Street as a “historical streetscape” unique in Australia. There are many buildings of historical significance, including cathedrals, hotels, hospitals, the supreme courthouse and the old post office. Another great place to visit is the Rockhampton Heritage Village, a museum where you will learn what it was like to live in the area between 1850 and 1950. If you’re passionate about history, plan to visit the heritage-listed Archer Park Rail Museum. The museum displays Rockhampton’s rail history and the interactive soundscape ensures it is fun for all ages. The fully restored Purrey Steam Tram is believed to be the only one of its kind in the world.

Rockhampton Art Gallery

Majestic Gardens Almost as old as the city itself, the Rockhampton Botanic Gardens have recently been awarded heritage listing. They are 143 years old and are regarded as one of the best regional gardens in Australia. Spend a relaxing afternoon wandering through the lush grounds at the Rockhampton Zoo, located within the Botanic Gardens, and discover animal species from all over the world. The Kershaw Gardens, on Rockhampton’s northside, stretch 1km along the Bruce Highway and are an ideal place to experience Australia’s native flora all in one location.

The Mighty Fitzroy Rockhampton’s impressive Fitzroy River is another icon you should certainly visit. Take a relaxing walk along the river’s tree-lined boardwalk. Throw in a fishing line and try your hand at catching one of the region’s legendary barramundi. The riverbank is equipped with electric barbeques and picnic facilities so if you fancy cooking up a steak or that barramundi you caught, you can do it yourself, alfresco, right on the river. The Rockhampton region is one of the few areas in Australia that is fortunate to have an ample water supply. Because of the city's growth, construction began on the Fitzroy River Barrage during the 1960s. The barrage separates the fresh water upstream from the tidal water downstream. The catchment area of the river at the barrage is around 139,000 square kilometres. A Sports Mecca From rowing on the Fitzroy River to bull riding in the rodeo ring, Rockhampton has something to

Catch a game of state league footy, basketball or soccer, swim a few laps in an Olympic-sized pool, or have a hit on the same tennis court where Australian legend Rod Laver perfected his ‘rocket’ serve. See where Olympic athletes Kenrick Tucker (cycling), Duncan Armstrong (swimming), sisters Kerrie and Anna Meares (cycling), Mark Knowles, Matt Gohdes and Jamie Dwyer (hockey) started their careers, and find out why Rockhampton is the home of champions. If you like to frock-up or just place a bet, don’t miss the Rockhampton racing scene. With races conducted 45 times a year at Callaghan Park, Rockhampton plays host to the popular XXXX Gold Winter Racing Carnival in June each year. The Winter Racing Carnival culminates with the running of the Rockhampton Cup, and the popular Spring Carnival, with race meetings that coincide with Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup Days (See page 35 for major race dates). Callaghan Park underwent a major $6.5M track redevelopment in January 2010 which has made the racing surface the envy of Queensland Racing.

Gracemere Gracemere is located 9km west of Rockhampton. It is home to the largest livestock saleyards in the Southern Hemisphere and is the heart of the Capricorn cattle industry. Experience the dust and drama as thousands of cattle, horses and other livestock are rounded into the saleyards to go under the auctioneer’s hammer each week. Sales are held most week days, with the major cattle and bull sales being held every Friday. Twenty minutes west of Gracemere on the Capricorn Highway is Mt Hay Gemstone Park. Mount Morgan gold-bearing around 1870 but kept his discovery secret, hoping to sell his knowledge. The Morgan family formed a six-man partnership with some Rockhampton businessmen to mine the mountain. The Mount Morgan syndicate lasted until 1886 when the Mount Morgan Gold Mining Company was formed. Primitive quarrying and underground tunnelling was carried out until the 1920s when the gold of Ironstone Mountain was at its richest. Following a short closure after this time, the mine re-opened in 1932 under the new company Mount Morgan Limited. Mount Morgan Limited began open cut mining – creating one of the biggest manmade holes in the Southern Hemisphere for its time. Book a fascinating tour with Mt Morgan Guided TMC Tours and go on a journey through the historic town and the heritage-listed mine site. Access is not available to individuals. This tour is the only way to access the historic Mount Morgan Mine Site. The latest attraction at Mount Morgan Mine is Michael Durrant’s “World of Fossils” exhibition. Explore the extraordinary world of prehistoric life, from ancient jelly-fish, amphibians and giant marine reptiles, right through to dinosaur tracks.

A visit to Mount Morgan is a must. Just an easy 40 minute drive from Rockhampton, this historical gold mining town was established in 1882, and continued to produce gold, silver and copper for 99 years until the mine closed in 1981.

M

ount Morgan was considered one of the most important gold discoveries in the world, and the mine was also believed to be the largest open cut gold mine in the Southern Hemisphere. The town was officially proclaimed in 1890 and in 1898 the railway reached the town. Europeans had been in the area since the 1850s and a local stockman, William Mackinlay, discovered that the Ironstone Mountain was

In 1974, the Mount Morgan Railway Museum and the Railway water tank were classified by the National Trust of Queensland. Today, the station is home to the town’s Tourist Information Centre. The Mount Morgan Historical Museum has a collection of memorabilia giving an insight into the town’s mining heritage. Work your way through the hundreds of photographs on hand which depict the boom and bust periods of Mount Morgan. View the mine from Tipperary Point and see the “Big Stack”. In 1905 the brick chimney was built to distribute fumes from the mine smelters. It stands on a hillside behind the smelters and contains over 700,000 bricks. Before departing Mount Morgan be sure to visit “The Big Dam”, the last and largest of seven dams built on the Dee River. The Big Dam, as it is locally known, has always been a favourite picnic area.

Dining & Nightlife With the best of both coast and country, it’s no wonder that Capricorn’s cuisine is as diverse as the region it comes from. Sure, Rockhampton is the Beef Capital of Australia and offers premium export quality produce, but beef is not the only thing on the menu in Capricorn.

within walking distance to Rockhampton Art Gallery and Pilbeam Theatre. If you want to kick up your heals and party the night away then visit Rockhampton’s popular William Street precinct where hip clubs and bars come alive each weekend. Spend a lazy Saturday morning shopping for sun-ripened mangoes, pineapples or lychees at the local Capricorn Coast markets or visit a local seafood shop and indulge in a Queensland mud crab or a kilo of prawns to enjoy by the sea. The focus is on quality regional produce, including beef drawn from the huge local herds of prime grass-fed and grain-fed cattle, grown on some of Australia’s best grazing land. And, with a third of the Great Barrier Reef sitting off our coastline, there’s some great seafood on offer. Embark on a dining adventure and savour the delicacies of the sea and river inlets including Queensland mud crabs, sand crabs and prawns plus the very best tropical fish including barramundi, coral trout and red emperor.

Taste the local Beef Dishes at these great restaurants... Rockhampton Restaurants n Heritage Hotel n Great Western Hotel n Bistro 98 n Hogs Breath Cafe n The Edge Restaurant & Bar n Riverside Restaurant n Frenchville Sports Club

rocodile is another trademark food of the region! Sourced from the local Koorana Crocodile Farm, visitors can enjoy a croc steak or even a crocodile pie. Living in Capricorn

Rockhampton Botanic Gardens

50

The Capricorn Coast and Rockhampton region boasts a population totalling 112,000 and is projected to increase to 163,000 by 2031. The region offers an impressive range of employment and education options, health, sporting and cultural facilities, affordable housing and a booming economy...So what are you waiting for?

The city of Rockhampton boasts a great range of private boarding schools and state secondary schools which, together with the CQ University and TAFE, makes it an educational mecca. The city also presents diversified industry and business groups, key among these being two meat works, a large railway workforce, Stanwell Power Station and Central Queensland Livestock Exchange to the west.

Rockhampton City Rockhampton, the city of lifestyle, innovation, and rich community spirit, lies just above the Tropic of Capricorn and has one of the best tropical climates Queensland has to offer. Rockhampton acts as a gateway to the Capricorn Coast to the east, and the Outback to the west and is the 8th largest city in the Sunshine State, with a population greater than 100,000.

Rockhampton is also a crucial service city for the Central Queensland mining industry. As well as being known as the “Beef Capital of Australia, the city is a commerce centre for Central Queensland industry, government offices, legal firms, accounting firms, and medical expertise including three hospitals. Rockhampton also boasts a great range of leisure activities, restaurants, quality shopping, sporting clubs and facilities.

The city’s airport is capable of handling the world’s largest aircraft and is a major element of the region’s business and tourism industries. It is the 16th busiest domestic airport in Australia, with 750,000 domestic passengers per year and is well serviced with direct flights from Brisbane, Sydney, and Townsville. Rockhampton is situated on Queensland’s largest river, the Fitzroy, and lies 40km inland from the beautiful Capricorn Coast beaches. The city is surrounded by the Berserker Ranges and Mount Archer (607 metres high), posing an impressive backdrop for the vibrant city centre, business districts and residential areas. If you’re considering a move for your career or just to escape the hustle and bustle of metropolitan life, Rockhampton boasts all the facilities of a capital city without any of the worries. Capricorn Coast The Capricorn Coast was once made up of the sleepy little villages of Yeppoon and Emu Park but is now bursting with life as an area of choice for many new residents. Numerous developers have discovered these unparalleled towns and are providing more infrastructure and housing to take advantage of the spectacular views and idyllic seaside lifestyle. The region’s narrative of innovative environmental lifestyle balance has been further enhanced following a gift to the community of 61 hectares by Seaspray Residential Resort at Emu Park. This land at Cocoanut Point is an extension of the Capricorn Coast National Park. Cocoanut Point

preserves five separate but also linked ecosystems: the microphyll vine forest, beach ridge woodland, beachfront dunes, the headland itself and the tidal wetland. 2013 will see the completion of Oshen Yeppoon, an exciting new $35 million oceanfront development which is seen as a catalyst for future development by local business leaders, and is the first new apartment project to come out of the ground in the Yeppoon area since 2008. With Central Queensland’s $146 billion resources boom underway, developers and investors alike are now capitalising on the Capricorn Coast’s potential as a leisure and business hub for the region. Queensland Treasury and Trade expect that in 2013, the population of the coastline will be 37,430 and by 2031, will grow to 59,101. The Capricorn Coast offers a haven of golden beaches, pristine waters, tranquil rainforests and dramatic sunsets. Come and join us in our piece of paradise today, you’ll be glad you did! Surrounding Areas Stanage Bay Nestled on the coast, 175km north of Rockhampton, the fishing village of Stanage Bay really is a place to escape. Easily accessible from the Bruce Highway, the unsealed drive to Stanage Bay takes you through diverse countryside eucalypt forests, creeks begging to be picnicked by and swum in, cattle stations with cows wandering casually over the track, and wetlands with enough birds to keep the fussiest traveller happy. There’s as much or as little to do as you like, get in to some of the best fishing on the Capricorn Coast. Rock climbing, birdwatching, swimming or just relaxing with beautiful vistas to accompany you. Getting there: From Rockhampton, drive along the Bruce Highway for 75km, then turn right on to the Stanage Bay road just past Kunwarara. Drive another 100km along this mostly unsealed road, which is accessible by 2WD except during very wet weather (check before you go). Sapphire Gemfields

The local Plumtree Store can provide a range of accommodation options for visitors to the area. Central Highlands & Sapphire Gemfields Journey west from Rockhampton along the Capricorn Highway and you will discover some original Outback frontier towns. The town of Emerald is the hub of the Central Highlands and is the gateway to the Sapphire Gemfields. Here the whole family can fossick in the largest commercial sapphire fields in the Southern Hemisphere – who knows what treasure you might dig up! Heron Island One of the few coral cays located right on the Southern Great Barrier Reef, Heron lets you swim off the beach into crystal clear waters and an endless garden of coral. It’s a sanctuary for nesting birds, green turtles and activities including diving, snorkelling and guided walks – a nature lover’s haven. Capricorn’s southern neighbours, Gladstone, are the launching point for either a 2 hour boat ride or 30 minute helicopter trip.

The Dee River, flowing through Mount Morgan, was once lined with a number of Mount Morgan’s famous Swinging Bridges, with the first constructed in the 1890s. Six of these unique bridges were constructed over the Dee River; built to ensure easy access between the town and mine site, even during times of flood. Sadly, no originals remain today. A replica can be found, however, across the river connecting Byrne’s Parade to East Street; giving those who cross a feel for the old mining days. An information board is also found at the location where the last original stood – found on Tipperary Road. Mount Morgan State High School (2 minute drive from Private Victor Stanley Jones Suspension Bridge) The Mount Morgan State High School was erected in 1908 to teach the technical skills and trades of mining. The college became a high school in 1912, when the demand for skilled miners decreased. The high school was Queensland’s first high school and had 127 pupils. The State High School still operates today on the corner of Central and Dee Streets. Mount Morgan Historical Museum (Morgan Street, 2 minute drive from High School) Located in the main street of Mount Morgan, the Mount Morgan Historical Museum has an extensive collection of classic pieces and photographs tracing the history of Mount Morgan from its early pioneering days through to the gold rush and settlement period. Open 9am – 4pm daily.

Mount Morgan Historical Museum

The Mount Morgan Masonic Temple (Gordon Street, 5 minute drive from Historical Museum) This 1903 Masonic Temple demonstrates the growth and prominence of Mount Morgan in the early 20th century and the spread of Freemasonry throughout Queensland. The temple was erected for 1,500 pounds by the Newman Brothers of Rockhampton, and can be found on Gordon Street. Arthur Timms Lookout (Pattison Street, 5 minute drive from Masonic Temple) From the Arthur Timms Lookout you get a spectacular view of the town and the mine that was once a mountain. Looking north over the top of town, you can see the Burnett Highway cross the Dee River and head off for Rockhampton. Turn westward until you encounter the Big Stack. Completed in 1905, it stands 71 metres tall and is said to contain three-quarters of a million bricks. To the left of the Big Stack is the lake which is the

site of what was the open-cut mine. Instead of that lake, try to picture the mountain of gold that once stood there – Ironstone Mountain, the original Mount Morgan. Mount Morgan Cemetery (5 minute drive from Aurthur Timms Lookout) The town’s cemetery reflects the hard times and numerous disasters that have plagued Mount Morgan over the years. Stories of industrial accidents and disease outbreaks litter the rows of tombstones. The Linda Memorial, located in the cemetery, was erected in 1909 to commemorate the 26 men who died in the mine between 1894 and 1909. The cemetery also contains the Chinese Heung Lew or prayer oven. The cemetery is located 2km south of the town centre, just off Coronation Drive. More Information? For information on the best places to visit in Mount Morgan stop off at the Tourist Centre located at the Historical Rail Museum on Railway Parade or for a guided tour contact Mt Morgan Guided TMC Tours on (07) 4938 1823.
