Charleville Places to Eat..............................................18

Hi my name is Scott Higgins and I love taking landscape photos as a hobby. My wife and I were tracing the family history in the Murweh Shire, mainly Cooladdi and Charleville. My wife’s Nan, Colleen Turnbull (nee Thompson), grew up in Charleville and she met her husband Wally Turnbull (lived in Cooladdi) and the stories told through the generations of their life in the outback inspired us to visit the region & to capture photos of some places that Nan may remember. Capturing some iconic sights of the district at night time always gives you a different perspective to what you see in the day. I highly recommend visiting this region and learning the history and seeing the sights of the Murweh Shire.

MORVEN

CHARLEVILLE One of the largest towns in South West Queensland, Charleville is a must stay and see. With many different experiences within the shire – from bilbies to amazing night sky viewings – why not stay a few days or more and see it all. Home to Australia’s iconic bilby, experience them Up Close and Personal and have the opportunity to touch their uniquely soft fur and capture a memento to take home. Charleville, the Bilby capital of Australia, breeds bilbies for reintroduction into Currawinya National Park. Have you seen the outback wonders of the night sky? Visit the Charleville Cosmos Centre and Observatory and wow at the amazing secrets of the night sky. Not only housing the Observatory by night for stars, you can also experience daytime star viewing at our Sun Viewing session. You will love the newly upgraded interactives in Astronomy by Day. This is where you can visit our own Cosmos Shuttle, meteorite displays and the Stargazing in the Outback Theatre. The Cosmos Centre opens from 12:00pm and also has its own Cosmos Café, so stop in for a coffee while exploring our centre. Ask to book the Top Secret WWII Tour and discover what the 3500 USAAF personnel were up to in the area, see the remnants and learn about how WWII affected the town. It is an amazing story and one you really won’t want to miss. Do you love nature? Charleville hosts its own Outback Native Timber Walk which showcases local native trees at the back of

the Graham Andrews Parklands. This is also where you will find the famous Vortex Rainmaking Guns. Was Clement Wragge just crazy or was it Charleville’s fault that the experiment never worked? Have you ever played Disc Golf? The park also hosts a 9 tee course. Discs are available from a number of locations around town, starting with the Visitor Information Centre. Expand on the history of Charleville and visit Historic House Museum where you can view displays of a by-gone era. Learn about the Cobb & Co Changeover Station Trail and the impact it had in the town or listen to the Pioneers Audio History Panel. Explore the history of the Royal Flying Doctor at the Charleville Base Royal Flying Doctors Visitor Centre and see how the RFDS services have changed dramatically over the years. The Charleville base services an area almost the size of the United Kingdom, bringing essential services to the remote outback. See the Angellala Bridge Explosion Site, the most powerful explosion in Australian transport history. Felt over 30km away, it destroyed the main road and adjacent rail bridge.

Visit the home of the Ooline trees and their black orchids located within the Tregole National Park, only 10km south of Morven. Stay for a picnic or BBQ and take in the wonders of these vulnerable rare trees that straddle the boundary between the Brigalow Belt and the Mulga Lands. The park features a 2.1km circuit track with information boards on plants and wildlife found in the area. Stay in town and experience the handcrafted Miniature Building Display that took over fifteen years to complete. Situated at the Morven Museum, the display depicts buildings from the 1900s – these mini buildings and their attention to detail are a must see. Also on display is a Kerosene Tin Hut from the 1930s Great Depression. Built by flattened kerosene tins, these huts were common among pensioners during this time as the only accommodation available. Don’t miss the opportunity to explore the Self-guided Heritage Trail taking you to places such as the Rabbit Board Gate used for rabbit proofing in 1886. In an attempt to stop the rabbits migrating and destroying the land, this fence stretched 47,403km. Gates were constructed over roadways where travellers would have to open the gate and then close upon going through or face a hefty fine up to £50! Another must see in Morven is the Bloodwood ‘Branding Board’. With over 30 marks, this board showcases some brands that have been used for over 100 years in the Morven district. Take a break at Sadlier’s Waterhole where you can enjoy the serenity of the picturesque red river gums lined along the waterhole which once was a stop over for Cobb & Co Coaches and bullock teams. Up for more adventure! Visit the Red Sands 2km north of Morven that showcases the vibrant desert sands. The kids can have fun rolling down the hills or you can explore the 4x4 tracks around the area.

EXPERIENCE CHARLEVILLE

CHARLEVILLE, MORVEN, AUGATHELLA & COOLADDI

AUGATHELLA Experience Augathella – ‘Meat Ant Country’ – and the rich history and culture the town provides. Take a stroll through Meat Ant Park located right next door to the town library and Visitor Information Centre. See the giant Meat Ant Sculpture that is over a million times the size of an actual ant, and while you’re there you can view the story boards located around the park. Some history on the notorious bushranger brothers Patrick and James Kenniff can be found at the Kenniff tree. The brothers were a part of one of Queensland’s largest manhunts and Patrick Kenniff is believed to be the last bushranger hung in Queensland for his crimes. View all the amazing Murals along the main street, created by locals to showcase their love for the region and

the history and culture of the town. The murals paint scenes of the rural lifestyle past and present around Augathella, from the great sheep stations through to the 1950s and the story of ‘Smiley’. To show off Augathella’s creativity, the town also displays various Wrought Iron Sculptures, locally made and humorous in nature. A must see is the Boadicea Gallery and Cinema, where an exhibition of over 150 heritage photos are displayed plus you can also view the 1956 movie ‘Smiley’ based on a local identity. For some more recent history take a look at the Q150 Shed, Queensland’s most unique entertainment venue. It travelled the state in 2009 providing communities a free night of entertainment. It’s well worth a look to view the architecture behind this travelling structure – travelling to over 12 towns before coming to its final resting place in Augathella.

COOLADDI Stopping at the Cooladdi Foxtrap is an experience on its own. It is an all-in-one store, motel, pub and post office. This town may be one of Queensland’s smallest towns but it still has a lot to offer.

and enjoy the serenity of what nature has on offer, or throw in a line and try your luck at catching a fish or maybe even a yabby. These small outback towns really do have so much personality so put Cooladdi on your list of things to see and do in the Murweh Shire.

Once a thriving railway town, the railway station was originally called Yarronvale but was later renamed to Cooladdi (Aboriginal name meaning ‘Black Duck’) in 1913 to stop the confusion between a nearby patrol station with the same name. Explore the remnants of what once was. The town had a population of 270 and housed a police station, butcher, school, post office and boarding house. The Cooladdi railway siding that remains today is one of the most photographed buildings around the Cooladdi region. Take a stroll along Quilberry Creek (Aboriginal name meaning ‘Plenty of Water’)

COSMOS

CENTRE

From the very first person walking the Earth, we humans have always looked up to the stars in amazement and awe. Through the years, technology has grown and in doing so has helped shape our understanding of the stars today. Long ago, when we feared and respected the stars for being entities of supernatural power to now, understanding what they are and how important they are for the creation of all matter. Understanding our ever changing perspective of the Universe can be tricky, but when you visit the Charleville Cosmos Centre you will be able to send your mind on a journey that will help your understanding of the Universe and more importantly, just where we fit into this grand stage. Each and every one of us connects to the stars, heavens and Universe in our own way. The Charleville Cosmos Centre offers a range of different experiences to help you find this connection as you look up and wonder what is out there. Whether it is hearing about the latest scientific findings and technologies, or finding a moment to connect spiritually to the stars, you will find the passionate staff eager to help you undergo this journey. Day or night, the Cosmos Centre offers different tours, so there is always a special voyage to embark on while experiencing Charleville in Outback Queensland.

SMALL & PERSONAL FAMILY TOUR A tour that lands a wow after wow... after wow… after wow For the family that is looking for a little more telescope time, and/or a bit more childrenfriendly facts and figures about the Universe, then the S&P Family tour has been built for you. Taking limited numbers, this tour allows your family more time to bond together as you sit back and take in the vastness of the dark sky over Charleville. Enjoy the depths of space as your vision travels light years away to distant celestial objects. » On a moonlit sky, enjoy the craters of the Moon as you pick out where humans first stepped back in 1969. Don’t forget your mobile phone to try and capture a photo of the craters through the big 14” telescope.

STORIES OF ASTROLOGY The ancestral connection to the sky In today’s technological society it is easy to forget about a time where we humans shared a very special bond to the heavens above. A time where the connection and understanding of the sky allowed ancient cultures to survive, thrive and grow. Stories

were passed down in a way of lessons on what is right and what is wrong; stories also gave warning of the changing of season, animal migration and so much more. This night experience brings back this knowledge from the days of old and helps us all reconnect to the sky once again in a very unique and special way. » Listen to ancient stories around a fire pit » Learn about how ancient cultures used the stars for all sorts of interesting reasons » Ancient cultures covered may include Greek, Egyptian, Native American, Japanese, African, Greenland, Aboriginal Australian and so many more.

This photography-focused session has been developed to empower those who own DSLR cameras to take a step into the captivating world of astrophotography. COSMOS CAFÉ Food, Caffeine and Astronomy – is there any happier place you could be? Understanding the constellations and space in general is a lot to take in, so it can leave a person a little weary. If you discover that you need a little bit of a recharge, or you feel a bit hungry, why don’t you get a nice coffee and yummy feed at the Cosmos Café located in the heart of the Charleville Cosmos Centre. SUN VIEWING The safest and coolest way to look at the Sun Looking at the Sun is always a challenge, it’s simply too bright and harmful for our eyes. Fear not, the Hydrogen Alpha Sun telescope is never far away at the Charleville Cosmos Centre. HISTORIC HOUSE MUSEUM There are very few buildings in Charleville that can boast a history as long and colourful as the Charleville Historic House Museum. Dating back to 1887, the building was purpose-built as the town’s first Queensland National Bank before it went on to become a private residence, then a boarding house. In 1973 the Charleville & District Historical Society purchased it to establish the museum it is today. Filled to the brim with treasures of yesteryear, some dating back to the early 1800s, you’ll be surprised at what you will discover – it’s well worth your time.

Many of the original features of the bank still remain, including marble fireplaces and the vault. The displays are enhanced with an array of past times machinery in the grounds, including a life-size replica of a Cobb & Co coach and an original Rail ambulance and steam engine.

Top Secret WWII Tour Step inside the world of the ‘Top Secret Precinct – Charleville’ and discover what 1942 marked the arrival of...

The USAAF arrived in Charleville during WWII. They set up camp here for four years and would spend around $1.4m (1940’s currency) constructing 101 buildings on the site. It was a Top Secret base throughout WWII and even if the enemy knew they were here, they couldn’t get to Charleville and return to their base as Charleville was too far inland. This USAAF base would cover an area of approximately 25 square kilometres south of Charleville and station up to 3500 (Charleville’s population today) personnel on site.

So just how do you keep something that large a secret? Book the Top Secret WWII Tour today to discover what the top secret actually was and listen to the story behind it all ... it’s fascinating – you won’t be disappointed. Follow your local guide in your own vehicle around what once was a USAAF Top Secret Base inside today’s Top Secret Precinct. The journey is 4 kilometres on some dirt and tar roads just around the Airport area.

ACTIVITIES CHARLEVILLE GRAHAM ANDREWS PARKLANDS STEIGER VORTEX RAINMAKING GUNS & OUTBACK NATIVE TIMBER WALK The ‘Steiger Vortex Rainmaking Guns’ is a unique Charleville Story.

The Outback Native Timber Walk has many different species of Australian native trees. Call into the Charleville Visitor Information Centre for your map to guide you through the Park.

CHARLEVILLE VISITOR INFORMATION CENTRE

The Charleville Visitor Information Centre is located in the Historic Charleville Railway Station that was rebuilt in 1957 after a fire in 1954. This passenger station is significant for its rarity value. It is the only station of its design and the only station on the Queensland Rail network with reinforced concrete walls, designed to accommodate the climactic conditions of Charleville.

ANGELLALA BRIDGE EXPLOSION

At 9.50pm on the 5th of September 2014, 26km south of Charleville, Australian transport history was made. A truck carrying 53 tonnes of ammonium nitrate caught fire, crashed and exploded at Angellala Creek. The blast radius was huge and felt over 30km away and had Charleville locals thinking it was an earthquake. Today, the road bridge has been rebuilt, but signs of the explosion still remain and the story is told through a specially prepared interpretive area at the site.

FISHING SELF-GUIDED

There is nothing more relaxing than sitting under a star studded sky on the banks of our peaceful rivers with the only sounds you can hear for miles is your day’s catch sizzling away over your campfire and the leaves of the river gums rustling gently in the breeze. You will find our local area fishing map conveniently marks all spots situated within 50kms of Charleville in all directions... fishing has never been easier.

PIONEERS AUDIO HISTORY PANELS

Hear the entrepreneurial and amazing stories of some of the men who were instrumental

28

EXPERIENCE CHARLEVILLE

in shaping Charleville into the community it is today. Situated on the verandah of Historic House Museum, these are fascinating stories and worth listening to.

ROCK WALLABY VIEWING

The rangers at the Charleville Environmental Protection Agency office (National Parks) are hosts to the Yellow Footed Rock Wallaby. Visitors are invited to pop in and see them frolic and play in their own specially built enclosure.

SKATE PARK & TOWN POOL

After travelling, let the kids stretch their legs at the Charleville Skate Park. Right next door we also have Basketball and Netball courts and when the weather permits, the pool is also handy.

KING EDWARD PARK

Bring the kids along to King Edward Park where you can stretch out your legs. The kids can play on the playground equipment and you can also use the exercise equipment provided.

WARREGO RIVER WALK

The Warrego River, a northern tributary of the Darling River, flows through parts of South West Queensland and the north western areas of New South Wales. This short 2.8km return walk along the northern side of the Warrego River also features some of the local flora and fauna of our region.

WEATHER STATION AUTOMATIC RELEASE The Bureau of Meteorology collects meteorological data such as temperature, wind direction and speed, in the local area, which is used to forecast the weather. A balloon is launched automatically each day. Interested members of the public can view this at Charleville Airport at 9:15am daily.

BIRD WATCHING

The Visitor Information Centre can supply a list on native birds to our region and the best places that you can find them.

MADE IN MURWEH LOCAL ARTS & CRAFTS STORE

Located at the front of the Charleville Town Hall, this little store has some wonderful treasures. Showcasing local talents, this store only stocks items that have been hand crafted within the boundaries of the Murweh Shire. Pop in and say G’day to the dedicated volunteers and you just never know what unique little memento you may find.

BAREFOOT BOWLS

Come on down to the Charleville Bowls Club on Thursday night. Starting at 6:30pm, join in on a social game of barefoot bowls, followed by a sausage sizzle. Weather pending.

LAWN BOWLS

Known for its friendly and relaxed atmosphere, a visit to the Charleville Bowls Club is a great chance to mingle and get to know the locals. The club offers activities that both visitors and locals can enjoy.

AUGATHELLA AUGATHELLA CEMETERY

Outback Cemeteries are always interesting. As you walk around you get the feeling of the pioneering days when life was tough.

AUGATHELLA HERITAGE TRAIL

It’s not until you take the time to walk Augathella’s self-guided heritage trail that you discover the rich and diverse history of the town, its bushrangers, bullockies and the huge sheep stations that all played a part in Augathella’s development.

FREE ACTIVITIES Australia nest and bring up their young on the Warrego River.

AUGATHELLA DIGGERS EASTER RODEO & RACES

Experience a great outback Easter weekend of Rodeo and Horse Racing. The Augathella Diggers Rodeo and Race Meeting should be on your list of things to enjoy.

MORVEN BRANDING BOARD

Local station owners burned their cattle brands onto a piece of Bloodwood to commemorate the re-enactment of the Harry Redford cattle drive. Harry, a known cattle duffer (thief), whose exploits of droving up to 1000 head of cattle (stolen) from Longreach to Adelaide earned him a place in Outback History.

AUGATHELLA MURALS Augathella’s murals celebrate the history of the town, from the great sheep stations of the west to the famous 1950s movie ‘Smiley’. The character is based on a local boy growing up in Augathella. For further information on the murals or more about Augathella, visit the Augathella Library.

DICK BAKER SHED & OLD MACHINERY DISPLAY

A whimsical collection and display of all things from a by-gone era, including a lot of old farming machinery. Most of the items came from past Morven local residents Dick Baker and Malcolm and Boosie Crichton.

KENNIFF TREE

Many towns lay claim to a bushranger or two. Augathella is no exception as it was here at this tree the notorious Kenniff Brothers would tether their horses when planning a quick getaway.

HAMBURG CREEK & SADLIER’S WATERHOLE Q150 SHED

In 2009, as part of the Q150 Celebrations, the Queensland Government constructed a shed that would travel the state providing each community it visited with a night of free entertainment. Communities it toured included Mount Isa, Cairns, Townsville, Mackay, Rockhampton, Maryborough, Blackall, Augathella, Cherbourg, Warwick, Brisbane and the Gold Coast. The shed has now come to rest permanently in Augathella and is used as a community function and entertainment centre. It’s well worth a look through its architecture.

WROUGHT IRON SCULPTURES

Humorous locally made sculptures, some that even feature a famous racehorse and Dancing Brolgas. These iconic birds of

Lined with red river gums, this picturesque waterhole was once a stop-over point for Cobb & Co Coaches and bullock teams. Follow in the footsteps of many early pioneers; take a picnic rug and enjoy a cuppa under the shade of the trees.

RABBIT BOARD GATE

Introduced European rabbits had already destroyed pasture land and native habitat throughout Australia. A rabbit proof fence was built in 1886 covering 47,403km and gates were constructed across the roads as part of the ‘rabbit proofing’ of Queensland.

TREGOLE NATIONAL PARK

Home to the rare Ooline tree, the Tregole National Park is just a 10km drive from Morven. A 2.1km interpretive walk introduces you to many arid zone plant species.

MEAT ANT PARK & GIANT MEAT ANT SCULPTURE

Why name a park after a Meat Ant you ask? Augathella’s local football team, known as the Mighty Augathella Meat Ants, were fearless in their attack against their opponANTS. This earned the town the nickname, ‘Meat Ant Country’. Features of the park include landscaped gardens, picnic table, story boards of Augathella History, adventure playground and let’s not forget the GIGANTIC MEAT ANT SCULPTURE... Over a million times the size of an actual ant!
