Witnessing an 800,000 year-old rainforest defy the laws of nature to grow out of the world’s largest sand island... simply amazing. Whether you believe that Fraser Island or K’Gari, meaning paradise, is the creation of Mother Nature or in fact the earthly incarnate of Yindingie the messenger of Aboriginal god Beiral, Fraser Island’s mirrored lakes, rebellious rainforests, mesmerising sand blows and historic icons are simply unforgettable.

Champagne Rock Pools

Indian Head

World Heritage-listed Fraser Island is the largest sand island in the world and a contradiction of well respected natural conventions. It is home to untouched freshwater lakes and creeks, including some of the world’s rarest dune lakes. Wetlands, heath decorated with wild flowers and 1,000 year-old rainforest trees all thrive from nothing more than sand. Rainforests require high rainfall and rich soil to thrive, but for the past 800,000 years rich rainforests have defied Mother Nature and called Fraser Island home. All the Island’s landscapes provide protection to some 350 species of birds, wallabies, possums, echidnas and Australia’s purest dingoes. Its lakes and the ocean that surround are home to fresh water turtles, dolphins,

dugongs and, of course, humpback whales during their migration between May and November. Fraser Island’s abundant flora and fauna create an irreplaceable natural attraction for tourists and were once the subject of great Aboriginal celebrations.

Aboriginal Heritage Fraser Island continues to be a culturally significant place for the traditional Butchulla (pronounced Badt-jala) people. Dreamtime stories tell of Yindingie’s transformation into the Island, with its mirrored lakes enabling the heavenly messenger to see into the heavens. However it was the Island’s food sources that prompted the Butchulla to name it K’Gari, meaning paradise.

While Fraser Island was a destination of feasting it has an intricate history of the Butchulla people that is still evident today in archaeological sites across the island. Evidence of the Butchulla people indicates that their history on the Island is more than 5,000 years old. Large tribes of Butchulla stopped living on the Island in 1904.

“World Heritage-listed Fraser Island is the largest sand island in the world and one of the only places in the world where rainforest grows in sand.”

Be dingo-aware It is always an exciting moment if you come across a dingo. However, Fraser Island dingoes are wild and unpredictable. Some dingoes on Fraser Island have become threatening because people have fed and teased them. When visiting Fraser Island, be dingo-aware, and never feed dingoes. Bin your food scraps without delay and store within your vehicle, always stay with your children and walk in groups. Anywhere on Fraser Island, on public or private land, it is an offence to feed a dingo, to attract it using food or food waste, or to disturb it in any way. Heavy fines apply.

Safety and emergencies Police, based at Eurong, regularly undertake law enforcement patrols, including speed radar checks, breath testing and vehicle inspections on 75 Mile Beach. There is no pharmacy or resident doctor on Fraser Island. All visitors are encouraged to bring adequate supplies of first aid materials and prescription drugs. During Queensland school holidays, an ambulance station is staffed at Happy Valley. There are no patrolled beaches on Fraser Island. In an emergency, a helicopter rescue service can be activated by the police. For emergencies, always call 000. 4

From July to November set your course for Hervey Bay and come and experience the BEST up close and personal whale encounters in the world. Hervey Bay’s humpback whales are just as friendly as the locals. That’s what makes our whale watching experience so unique. Hervey Bay is the only destination on the eastern coast of Australia where whales actually stop and take time to play.

Every year an estimated 13,000 humpback whales migrate from Antarctica to the warm waters of the Whitsunday Islands to breed. However, it is between late July and early November on their return to the south that they bring their calves to Hervey Bay for some good old fashioned fun. Whether you only have a few hours or can’t resist taking the entire day, whale watching in Hervey Bay is a truly unforgettable and often humbling experience that simply cannot be missed.

This up-close encounter will be almost impossible to stop watching.

Lady Elliot Island offers world-class snorkelling and diving in a welcoming and naturally idyllic destination. Where else can uncovering the mystery of the Great Barrier Reef be as simple as stepping off the beach and into the ocean. Stunning visibility allows you to witness and interact with boundless varieties of marine life. The iridescent coral gardens surrounding this island are considered some of the best on the entire reef. Perhaps that’s why marine life chooses to make these protected waters home. Reef fish are joined by loggerhead turtles, dolphins and a school of up to 40 resident manta rays that when swimming in

unison create one of the most graceful spectacles you will ever encounter. A relaxing eco-resort allows you to stay just metres from the Great Barrier Reef. Environmental impact is minimised by limiting guest numbers to a maximum of 150 at any given time. Guests can take advantage of packages that include dinner, breakfast, a snorkel lesson, use of snorkel equipment, a glass bottom boat tour and marine walk. Day trip packages are also available. Flights depart daily from Hervey Bay, Bundaberg, the Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast and Brisbane.

Country drive, Bauple Mountain

Fraser Coast Country The Fraser Coast’s amazing hinterland is full of natural beauty, hotels from bygone eras and small towns oozing country charm. Take a relaxing drive past national park, sugar cane and macadamia farms and watch fat cattle snaking along well-worn watering routes.

Southern Hinterland The southern hinterland is defined by the Mary River which provides opportunities for camping, fishing and canoeing. A quiet trip down the Mary can bring you face to face with some of Australia’s rarest species, while country roads lend themselves to bushwalking, horse riding and mountain biking. Bauple Nestled in the foothills of Bauple Mountain you can relive the pioneering past at the Museum and enjoy macadamia nuts – or Bopple nuts – near where they were first discovered by Aboriginal people possibly 30,000 years ago. The Mountain was a sacred place while the nuts were used for food, trade and gifts. Tiaro Stock up on local knowledge as well as homemade goods and local art and craft at the Tiaro Visitor Information Centre and Craft Cottage. See the butcher shop which is famous throughout Australia or sample old fashioned pub fare at one of its two

historic hotels. The Mary River runs beside the town of Tiaro and one of the best places to enjoy all it offers is at Petrie Park. Gundiah, Theebine & Miva

the western hinterland with rugged bushland and spectacular exposed granite outcrops and cliffs.

Northern Hinterland Howard & Torbanlea

The old rail sidings of Gundiah and Theebine are both home to grand old hotels. Stop for a picnic at Munna Creek or head to Miva to find the picturesque Dickabram Bridge – one of only two bridges of its kind in Australia that was traversed by car and train.

Western Hinterland Wook-Koo Park/Mungar Visit this great park at Oakhust to find life-sized statues of settlers, farm animals, native animals and a giant wooden carving of Wook-Koo, who according to Aboriginal legend was the area’s first inhabitant. Meet some of Australia’s native animals, including dingoes, kangaroos, reptiles, emus, turtles – at the Fraser Coast Wildlife Sanctuary on Mungar Road. Brooweena Learn about the trials and tribulations of Queensland’s early pioneers at the impressive Brooweena Museum and historical village. Mount Walsh Take a scenic drive through small towns and settlements including Aramara and Teebar to reach Mt Walsh and its surrounding national park. Mt Walsh dominates the landscape of

Just north of Maryborough are the former coal mining towns with their old fashioned pubs and important historical buildings, including the homes of a former Prime Minister and Queensland's first female Senator. This is where Queensland’s early coal mining industry began and the Burrum District Museum at Howard houses an impressive collection of information and memorabilia. Wongi Waterholes & Lake Lenthall Explore the nearby Wongi Waterholes – a beautiful picnic and camping spot, fringed by paperbark trees and surrounded by forest, and go fishing in Lake Lenthall.

Stay and Relax Explore the hinterland at your own pace and stay in a variety of accommodation from bush camping and caravan parks to charming B&Bs. Free overnight camping is allowed for self contained caravans and RVs at Bauple, Rossendale Park, Tiaro, Petrie Park and Brooweena.
