PRE-TRIP PLANNING

A little bit of preparation goes a long way in the Outback – ensure you have a good map and plan ahead. It’s a good idea to calculate travel times and distances between stops, even preparing alternate routes, especially when travelling during Australia’s summer (Nov – Apr) when rain and storms can impede travel plans.

ROAD CONDITIONS

Contact the local Visitor Information Centre in the town that you are visiting or visit the Government Traffic and Travel Information website qldtrafic.gov.au or call 13 19 40 for current road conditions.

STAY IN CONTACT

If you’re travelling remotely it’s always a good idea to let someone know where you’re going, and when you plan to get there. Keeping in touch is not as hard as you might think, via phone or radio.

CARAVANS

If you are a member of a ‘caravanning convoy’, don’t travel too close together. Other road users will become frustrated if they are unable to overtake safely. The law requires caravans and other large vehicles, outside a built-up area, leave at least 60m between each other. The distance is 200m in a road train area.

HEAVY VEHICLES & ROAD TRAINS

Care should be taken when passing and overtaking road trains and heavy vehicles, including other caravans. Ensure you have a clear line of sight, allow plenty of room and be prepared for vehicles to move a little from side to side as you overtake. If a road train is approaching to overtake you, move as far to the left as possible and stop if necessary to allow it to overtake safely.

MOBILE COVERAGE

Longreach, Mount Isa, Charleville, Bedourie and Birdsville have coverage from Telstra only. Outside of these towns only Telstra Next G Network is available, usually within a 20km radius of towns. There is limited mobile phone coverage in the far south-west corner of the region, west of Quilpie. Public phones are recommended for extended travel in this area.

FUEL UP

On major highways fuel stops are rarely more than 200km apart so it should not be necessary to carry spare fuel. However, where you see ‘no fuel’ signs, it means exactly that. Ensure your vehicle is mechanically sound, carry a first aid kit, ample water and spares such as tyres, radiator hoses and fanbelts, together with a good toolkit. Ensure that your spare tyre is at the correct pressure.

FATIGUE AND NIGHT DRIVING

Long distances and stretches of unchanging landscape can make a driver very tired. Avoid driving at night as much as possible, kangaroos and other wildlife are much more active at night and are harder to see on the roads.

SINGLE LANE DRIVING

When meeting road trains and heavy vehicles on single lane roads, slow right down and move off the road entirely and stop to avoid driving into any obstacles on the verge. In wet conditions road verges tend to be soft and/ or slippery, so when pulling off to the left you should always keep your right wheels on the bitumen and keep moving slowly to avoid getting bogged.

WILDLIFE AND STOCK

If you see stock or wild animals near the road, slow down; do not swerve or your vehicle may roll. Be patient with stock and wary of kangaroos and emus. It pays to be vigilant when driving in the Outback, especially either side of sunrise or sunset when kangaroos tend to be at their most active and the light makes seeing them more difficult.

As you roll into Longreach ‘Heart of Outback Queensland’, don’t be surprised if you feel just a tinge of ‘Aussie’ pride. The unmistakable red and white livery of a Qantas Jumbo Jet dominates the skyline from kilometres away. Inside the dedicated museum, you’ll uncover many a story linked to the founding of Australia’s national airline that just so happened to grow up in Longreach.

Across the road, you’ll spot the shimmering curved roof of another Australian icon. Just like Hugh Sawrey’s famed artwork AVisionSplendid, the Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame pays tribute to the Aussie Stockman. His dream was shared by other famous Australians including RM Williams, a bushman and entrepreneur. The themed galleries also celebrate the stories of Indigenous Australians, Pastoralists and Explorers. It’s the place of Aussie legends!

DISCOVER WHAT’S ON THE DINNER MENU

Saunter into downtown Longreach for a smorgasbord of dining options. Harry’s Restaurant and Bar is named after local legend, Harry Redford. It’s also legendary with the locals for top notch chef-prepared dishes created with fresh, seasonal produce. The Welcome Home Stonegrill brings traditional campfire methods of cooking inside for hearty outback dinners. Cook your choice of meat or fish the way you like it on the hot stone at your table. If great value pub dining is the order of the day then head to the RSL, Longreach Tavern or Birdcage Hotel. The smorgasbord continues with Woodsy’s Pizza, Happy Valley Chinese and Little Star Indian Restaurant.

From the moment you arrive in Ilfracombe you’ll feel a strong sense of community and pride. It was founded as a transport hub for the historic Wellshot Station, one of Australia’s greatest sheep and wool producers. Read on to discover why you need to visit...

REMINISCE AND DISCOVER

Walk through the swinging saloon doors of the Wellshot Hotel for a blast from the past. This gem of a pub stands exactly as it was some 120 years ago. Sidle up to the wool-press bar and gaze up at the ceiling covered with money from across the globe. There’s also an impressive display of well-loved Akubras and historic photos lining the walls. Time your visit for a hearty pub lunch or dinner that won’t disappoint.

Just outside you’ll spot a mind-blowing lineup of machinery, aka Machinery Mile. Inspect the handywork of our Aussie tradesmen and appreciate the enormous skill required to build these prized machines back in the day. Eyeball the 1917 Ruston Proctor Tractor, one of only three left in the world, and a big Excavator driven by a three-horse powered steam engine. This outdoor museum is definitely one of a kind.

COLLECT SOME CLASSICS

Do you have a passion for Victorian glass and Antique Banquet Lamps? The creators of Ilfracombe Antiques and Collectables love and cherish the work of historical artisans. You’ll discover many one-of-a-kind items sure to be a talking point when you return home. Before you visit, it’s recommended that you check opening hours.

At the Jackson Collection you’ll discover a collection of treasures by brothers Hilton and Ike Jackson. There’s literally thousands of bottles and other rarities on display. More than 30,000 bottles form Hilton’s collection and more than 120 weapons, flags, uniforms and helmets have been assembled by Ike. While not for sale, these are certainly a classic collection!

CAPTURE THE WATER

A great example of bush craftsmanship ingenuity can be seen at The Twelve Mile, just 12 miles (20km) south of Ilfracombe. Thousands upon thousands of naturally formed flagstones were carefully sorted and meticulously placed together to form a leak-proof reservoir guaranteed to retain precious water. Just imagine the time and patience needed to construct this stone pitched overshot back in the 1890s. It’s believed that Chinese tradesmen may have contributed special skills and worked on this project. The site was favoured by the Cobb and Co run as a watering stop for tired horses.

SOAK IN THE ARTESIAN

It’s not every day that you get to soak in a prehistoric spa. By this we mean water from the Great Artesian Basin, one of the largest underground fresh-water reservoirs in the world. There is strong scientific evidence to prove that these waters are ancient, possibly millions of years old. Imagine the therapeutic benefits of these mineral waters. And, the good news is that you can try it for yourself at Ilfracombe’s Artesian Spa in Memorial Park. Bring the family and enjoy the swimming pool, children’s playground and barbecue facilities.

ENGAGE WITH THE COMMUNITY

At the heart of every great town is a tight-knit community and Ilfracombe is no exception. Visitors are invited to join in local activities and events while in the region. Consider testing your skills on the 18-hole golf course or perhaps a round of clay target shooting at the monthly meet. If the sport of Kings is more your style, save the date for the Ilfracombe Races held annually in July. It’s a full day’s entertainment with Country Races, Fashions on the Field, an Undie Run (only in the outback) and live music until late.

Discover why Isisford on the Outer Barcoo is such a popular destination for long-stay campers. A featured town along the Barcoo Way adventure drive, the town attracts visitors from all over Australia seeking a true outback experience. The locals are friendly, facilities are great and the food’s top notch. But here’s a few more reasons to visit...

EAVESDROP ON SOME AUSSIE HISTORY

There’s something about Isisford and the Outer Barcoo. It’s been the inspiration for many an Australian poet including Banjo Paterson. The magnificent two storey Clancy’s Overflow Hotel was said to have been re-named in honour of Banjo’s iconic poem. If you are interested in stories of how places came to be by default, then plan a visit to Whitman’s Museum. Put quite simply, the Whitman brothers broke an axle while attempting to cross the Barcoo. They decided to settle on the banks of the river and proceeded to establish a hotel, butcher’s shop, store and saddlery to service surrounding stations. Many of the original buildings still stand today. It’s easy to picture life in more gentler times as you stroll Isisford’s heritage streetscape.

SNAG A YELLOWBELLY

It’s hard to miss the Outback’s biggest Yellowbelly glistening in the sunlight as you arrive into town. It measures 12 metres long and stands a lofty five metres high. Look closely and you’ll discover windmill parts, corrugated iron and thousands of pop rivets gathered from surrounding properties. This impressive metal art sculpture is a celebration of the Yellowbelly Fishing Competition held annually on the last weekend of July. The event is held at Oma Waterhole and it draws masses of keen anglers from across the country.

DELVE INTO THE BARCOO

Oma Waterhole is one of many permanent waterholes fed by the muchcelebrated Barcoo River. It’s a favourite recreation spot for lovers of camping, fishing and most things water related. There’s even a boat ramp. Overnight campers appreciate access to the hot showers and toilet facilities. Find it on the Isisford Yaraka River Road, just 16km from Isisford.

Back in town, saunter down to the Barcoo Weir, also a popular camping site. It was built back in 1934 to provide greater water security for the community. A pipeline linking Oma Waterhole to the Weir was constructed in 1960. No doubt a much more appealing water source for the locals than in earlier times when water was sourced from rain catchment or by hauling supplies from the local waterholes.

OUTER BARCOO INTERPRETATION CENTRE –DISCOVER AN ANCIENT CROCODILE

Did you know that the evolutionary ancestor of all crocodilians lived 95-98 million years ago? Visit the Outer Barcoo Interpretation Centre to view a lifesized replica of ‘Isisfordia Duncani’; it predates the first recorded appearance of true crocodiles by over 30 million years! The first fossils of Isisfordia were found in the mid-1990s by the former Deputy Mayor of Isisford, Ian Duncan, after whom the species is named. Researchers claim that Isisfordia was only a metre long and would have lived in a swampy river delta that opened into a large inland sea. There’s plenty more to the story along with other fossil discoveries, so be sure to visit the centre when you’re in town.

Emmet is the western gateway to Idalia National Park

DOUBLE THE POPULATION

Travel with a friend to Emmet and you will instantly double the population. That’s right, there are currently two residents calling Emmet home. It was once a thriving town built around a railway siding with a population of 30. Emmet became the second ‘water stop’ for steam trains travelling west from Blackall. As with many ‘water stops’ along new railways, it grew into a new settlement. Before you leave town (and half the population) read the town’s full ‘boom and bust’ story inside the revamped railway station and old store.

WALK AND EXPLORE

Pack your day pack and your walking poles if you’re eager to delve deeper into this 144,000-hectare park. Visitors to Idalia can choose from five different walking trails graded from easy to difficult. Enjoy wide-sweeping views from Emmet Pocket Lookout, visit an old mustering camp and stockyards or walk to the wave-shaped cliff overhang. Camping is permitted at Monks Tank camping area.

MUSE WITH THE MASTERS

‘On the Outer Barcoo where the churches are few, And men of religion are scanty, On a road never cross’d ‘cept by folk that are lost, One Michael Magee had a shanty.’

About an hour south-west of Yaraka is a turn-off to the ruins of Magee’s Shanty. According to local folklore, Banjo Paterson wrote the iconic poem ‘A Bush Christening’ at this very site. Nearby are the ruins of a Cobb & Co pub and the lonely grave of goldminer Richard Magoffin who perished in 1885 chasing his fortune. To access the area, you’ll cross a vast clay pan, so be prepared to kick up some dust! Yaraka Hotel operates a tour to the Shanty if you’d prefer not to drive. Check tour details with the publicans on arrival in town.

PINPOINT THE BEGINNING

You could be correct in saying that Yaraka ‘grew on the sheep’s back’. The region began as a large paddock filled with prized Merino sheep belonging to the massive Milo Sheep Station. It came into its own when the State Government split up the Milo leases. The town was officially founded in 1917 with the opening of the rail line from Emmet. The new station was named Yaraka (the Indigenous name for white spear grass) and ultimately became the end of the line.

JUMP

INTO NATURE

Drive 70km from Emmet and you’ll enter Idalia National Park, home to the yellow-footed rock-wallaby. The park is one of only seven small pockets of land in Australia where you’re likely to spot this largest of wallabies. It’s also the most colourful – brown and yellow ringed tail, yellow paws, white underbelly and white stripes on its flanks, hips and cheeks. If you get too close, expect to see the wallaby thump its feet to warn others.

Keen twitchers will be excited to learn that a number of rare bird species call Idalia home including plum-headed finches, eastern yellow robins and speckled warblers.

Drive around three hours south-west from Longreach and you’ll be rewarded with views of some astonishingly beautiful mesa hills. You’ve entered Yaraka country and what a treat. It’s a popular stop along the Barcoo Way adventure drive too. Here’s more of the story...

CHILL OUT AND CHAT

It’s not unusual for overnight visitors to extend their stay in Yaraka. This probably has a lot to do with the local publicans who also run the accommodation and camping ground. A personal welcome to town is more the norm than not. You’re sure to be introduced to other happy travellers as you enjoy a cool ale in the bar. Stay at the hotel or just a stone’s throw away are powered caravan sites, tennis court and a pristine swimming pool. This standard in-ground swimming pool has a million-dollar view of the beautiful Yang Yang Ranges. What better place to cool off and relax in the Outback. Be sure to fuel up at the general store before you leave.

JOURNEY TO THE END OF THE LINE

Make sure you pop into the End of the Line Museum housed in the original railway station. While there, you’ll learn about the Great Western Rail project and how it impacted Yaraka. If you love stories about trains and the railway, then you won’t want to miss this attraction. Along with the stories, there are some really interesting artifacts from Yaraka’s days as a railway town. Let’s face it, it’s not every day that you travel to the ‘end of the line.’

AMPLIFY THE AWESOMENESS

Have you ever witnessed a view that left you absolutely gobsmacked? The 360-degree outlook from Mount Slowcombe will leave you shaking your head in disbelief, wondering why so few people are aware of this gem. Join the daily sunset tour from Yaraka Hotel for the short 8km drive to the lookout. Access is easy via a sealed road winding its way to the top, so drive yourself if you prefer. There’s even an electric barbecue, covered seating and a ‘loo with a view’! Take your favourite nibbles and drinks for a spectacular sunset.

LONGREACH SCHOOL OF DISTANCE EDUCATION

Your guided tour includes an overview of distance education in the bush and beyond. You’ll meet students, see them on-air and find out about their lives. You’ll catch an on-air lesson with teachers based at the school and have time to explore the school grounds, student and other information displays and meet school staff.

AUSTRALIAN STOCKMAN’S HALL OF FAME

The story of the Great Brown Land, its people, its landscapes, its animals and its environment. That is our story, a moment captured, a time remembered, a people and place that is like no other. Indigenous, pastoralists, explorers, men, women and children, animals and environment co-existing, succeeding, failing, living and dying, they all have a story to tell. STAGECOACH EXPERIENCE

There you’ll travel along the bush track, before a short gallop to ‘outrun the storm’. This is the only place in Australia you can gallop in a stagecoach! POWERHOUSE & HISTORY MUSEUM

This museum is unique in that it houses an electrical industry collection second to none and of National significance. The generating complex is listed on the Queensland Heritage Register and the site on the Register of the National Estate and is nearly completely intact from when is closed. The Historical Museum holds a collection of objects and memorabilia that gives a snapshot of the history of Longreach, the Nogo Boundary riders cottage, farm machinery and original swimming baths.

ARTS AND CRAFTS CENTRE

Visit the historic heritage-listed old Ambulance building and check out the local arts and crafts. There is also a small display all about the history of the building. Lots of lovely handcrafted art, craftwork for sale and your viewing pleasure, and you can even join in workshops or crafts days.

Experience the Qantas story of Australia’s national airline, from its early days in Outback Queensland to present day. HISTORIC HUB & WELLSHOT STORY

• Wellshot Centre – tells the story of one of Australia’s greatest sheep stations, Wellshot Station. The centre traces the history and development of the station from its early settlement, how it was formed and how people lived and worked there.

• Machinery Mile – Lynn Cameron Machinery Mile hosts a range of equipment from standing engines to earthmoving machinery. A wonderful display of machinery, some of it very rare and almost all collected within 100 miles of the town, can be seen.

• History Precinct – The Folk Museum, a replica of an early station residence, also situated within the museum complex is Oakhampton Cottage which offers a tangible glimpse into early outback households and Romani Hall, a memorial to the young men of the district who answered ‘the call to arms’ and is dedicated to Australia’s Light Horsemen.

• Jackson’s Collections – is the lifetime collections of two brothers, Hilton and Ike Jackson. Prepare to be thoroughly intrigued by the many other interesting items on display; hubcaps, buttons, drill bits, rabbit traps and scissors are just some of the quirky collections.

• Wellshot Hotel – found its permanent home in Ilfracombe in 1890, after being relocated several times by bullock and cart along the railway line to where it stands today and being named the ‘Wellshot Hotel’. Have a look at the early photographs and many other fascinating artifacts like the unique old-time timber wool press. Learn also about the hat collection and the money on the roof. Why it’s there and how it gets up there? Come in and try it yourself.

• Artesian Spa, Pool, Picnic Park and Playground – Feel the benefits as you soak your travel weary muscles as you step in and immerse yourself in the rejuvenating mineral waters of this artesian spa. The artesian spa is located in the Ilfracombe Memorial Park which also has a swimming pool.

• Stone Pitching – a reservoir created by selecting and laying thousands of flagstones so that, in an area prone to savage droughts, a leak-proof reservoir was developed. It was built by hand around 1890 and subsequently used as a watering stop for sheep and cattle, a Cobb & Co change station, and it became so important that the Royal Mail Hotel was built to service the drovers and coach drivers.

• Explorer Mitchell’s cairn and The Big Yellowbelly

• Outer Barcoo Interpretation Centre – A museum depicting the evolution of nature from 100 million years ago to the present. The feature attraction is a life size replica model of Isisfordia Duncani, who lived around 98 million years ago and was the evolutionary ancestor of all crocodilians that live on earth today. There are displays of local fauna, flora, reptiles, birds and fossils that have lived in this region and general history of the Isisford area.

• Yuranigh’s Pond – Fancy a picnic by a tranquil pond just six kilometres out of town on Emmet Road? The pond was named after Yuranigh, an Aboriginal Australian from Molong in New South Wales. Yuranigh worked as a guide for Sir Thomas Mitchell, safely guiding his expedition team through vast unpopulated country.

• Whitman’s Museum – If you are interested in stories of how places came to be by default, then pay a visit to the Whitman’s Museum. Put quite simply, a couple of brothers broke an axel while attempting to cross the Barcoo. They decided to settle on the banks of the river and proceeded to establish a hotel, butcher’s shop, store and saddlery to service surrounding stations.

• Wander the historic town – Isisford, on the banks of the Barcoo, was settled in the mid 1800s and the architecture reflects its humble beginnings. Wander the main street and see an old store, butchers, bakers and hotel.

• Whitman’s Hospital Museum – This 124-year-old historic building has been built for maximum air flow with large verandahs and breeze way to keep the patients cool, and gives you an idea what people had to put up with in the bush with no air conditioning. The old Isisford Hospital was opened in 1892, while the building dated back to 1908, the museum now houses memorabilia from the 1890s.

• Find a spot to camp on the Barcoo Weir or Oma Waterhole, stay at the Golden West Hotel caravan park or hotel rooms. We recommend a minimum stay of 1-2 nights.

DAY SEVEN – YARAKA (102KM FROM ISISFORD)

UNFORGETTABLE SCENERY AND RAIL HISTORY

• Emmet – approximately half way between Isisford and Yaraka, was once a fully functional town with an operating railway station and a large number of residential housing. Situated on the railway line running from Blackall to Yaraka, it was the main depot for neighbouring properties to pick up their supplies, stores and mail. Check out the Railway Museum and Emmet Store Museum.

• Scenic Mount Slowcombe Lookout –The 360-degree views from the top of this mesa hill leave every visitor shaking their heads in disbelief that so few people have discovered this spectacular Outback gem. Visitors compare Mount Slowcombe to being Queensland’s equivalent of the Northern Territory’s Kakadu.

• End of Line Museum – housed in the original railway station. While there, you’ll find out all about the Great Western Rail project and how it impacted Yaraka. If you love stories about trains and the railway, then you won’t want to miss this attraction. Along with the stories, there are some really interesting artifacts and mementos from Yaraka’s days as a railway town.

• Magee’s Shanty (4WD) – Visit the historic site of the shanty immortalised in Banjo Paterson’s poem ‘A Bush Christening’. McGee’s Shanty is within an easy drive of  Yaraka

• Magoffin’s Grave (4WD) – is the lonely grave of gold miner Richard Magoffin. This grave is on the clay pan where Magoffin collapsed and perished from thirst. Sadly he was only a few hundred metres from the tree-lined course of the Barcoo River; so close yet so far for Magoffin.

• Stay at the Yaraka Caravan Park or the Yaraka Hotel and explore the area. Speak with the locals on the best place to catch a fish or take a tour with the Yaraka Hotel to the top of Mount Slowcombe to watch the sunset over open plains with the Ylang Ylang ranges in the background. We recommend a minimum of 1-2 nights’ stay in Yaraka.

• Idalia National Park (4WD) can be accessed from the Yaraka Blackall Road or the Barcoo Way.

powerhouse museum

The Powerhouse and Historical Museum houses an electrical industry collection of National significance. It is an initiative of the Longreach Regional Council, preserving the history of electricity production in the central west and a growing collection of local history. The complex building is now listed on the Queensland Heritage Register and the site is on the Register of the National Estate.

THE MUSEUM HAS THREE MAIN SECTIONS

The former Longreach Power House Generating Complex;

A local history collection including the 1921 swimming baths and Nogo Cottage;

Displays of agricultural and road maintenance machinery used in the development of the central west.

LONGREACH POWERHOUSE GENERATING COMPLEX

The Generating Complex comprises a series of large interconnected galvanised iron sheds housing 10 massive engines installed between 1948 and 1971 and a unique gas production system that was a first for Australia and later incorporated elsewhere in the Australian electrical industry.

The delivery of power to the town and eventually the outlaying areas was a local initiative of the Shire Council and run under the Longreach Electric Authority. Power was first generated from this site in 1921. The operation was taken over in 1966 by the Central West Regional Electricity Board. The station ceased to operate in September 1985 when this area was linked to the State-wide grid.

LOCAL HISTORY, SWIMMING BATHS AND NOGO COTTAGE

A growing collection of local history is housed in the former Office of the Central West Regional Electricity Board built in 1966. The collection contains memorabilia from the early settlement of the region and the remains of the School of Arts Museum, a collection of office equipment from local business houses and a memorable stroll back to early school days.

Outside you will find the original swimming baths of the town installed in 1921 and filled at first with water from the adjacent bore (sunk in 1897). They operated until 1964 and were then used as cooling ponds for the power station.

To the back of the complex is Nogo Cottage. The cottage is part of the original homestead of Nogo Station built in 1918. A portion was relocated to the eastern boundary of the property with the intention of using it as a boundary riders cottage. A downturn in the rural economy meant the cottage was never used. Today it depicts family living conditions in Western Queensland circa 1938-1950.

On 16 November 1920 a small airline was established; Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Service or QANTAS. The founders had a vision for the airline to service and connect the remote and isolated parts of Outback Queensland and the Northern Territory. From a dream to reality, little did the founders know just how much this small airline would grow – becoming Australia’s national icon everyone knows of today.

Then at night the airpark transforms for the spectacular world-class sound and light show, Luminescent Longreach.

Tours are available daily and provide an inside glimpse to the many secrets and stories of the aircraft situated under the airpark roof. If you are after a little more, there are exclusive tours which offer the chance for guests to sit in the cockpit and walk out on the wing of the Boeing 747. Bringing to life the rugged landscape of the Outback, the Stockman’s Hall of Fame reveals the incredible and often unknown stories of the everyday people who are at its heart – the unsung heroes.

Once your journey begins, weave your way through a cultural institution that fuses the value of antiquity and cultural representation.

Three floors, 11 exhibit spaces, 400 stories and 30 soundtracks converge in an environment that exquisitely immerses you into the time and place the stories were born.

For kids, young and old, we have a digital treasure hunt and interactive projected ‘Welcome Wall’. Their digital tour begins when they meet Coil the Kelpie, who will help them find the necessary Outback survival objects located around the museum and form part of the object displays. Coil will challenge them with a riddle related to an object.

Bring your Stockman’s experience to life at the Stockman’s LIVE Show! Hear the stories and see the skills that define what it means to be a Stockman. Understand their connection to the land and the livestock they care for as you experience the action of a live muster.

botanic walkway

The Longreach Botanic Walkway, a 2.5km linear garden between the town centre and the Stockman’s Hall of Fame, was designed by landscape architect Lawrie Smith, with inspiration drawn from the natural environment of the region. The garden displays and interprets the native plants of the Mitchell Grass Downs bioregion and demonstrates the potential of local dryland species for use in landscape and horticulture in the town parks, streets and home gardens in the region.

A particular feature of the garden is a focus on water-wise techniques for maintaining the plantings in the often hot and dry conditions of western Queensland. The garden not only showcases native plant species but provides a landscape with a regional ‘sense of place’. Soil, rocks and plant material from surrounding areas were brought into Longreach to create the garden. The first section from Rotary Park to Bower Road was commenced in 1989 and the second section from Bower Road to the Stockman’s Hall of Fame was completed in 1994. A network of botanic gardens across Australia displays the plant species that are suited to the climate and soils of particular bioregions. We hope you enjoy your visit to the Longreach garden.

There are several key themes which recur throughout the garden which can be applied in the home garden too:

• Creating a vegetation structure which is similar to a natural system is important, both for the plants themselves but also for the creatures (birds, insects and reptiles) which depend upon the plants.

• Plants which grow well are those which are adapted to local climate and soil conditions – choosing plants from the local bioregion and the land types within it ensures success.

• Thoughtful garden design saves water and reduces the time spent on garden maintenance.

iningai nature reserve

Iningai Nature Reserve is named after the Iningai Traditional Owners who lived along the Thomson River from the Stonehenge surroundings to Muttaburra prior to European occupation. The park is part of the Longreach Town Common and includes sections of floodplain and waterholes. The regeneration of this park was due to some passionate and forward thinking locals whose idea was for the land to be saved as a nature reserve for future generations to come to enjoy. The landscape has changed from a dusty wasteland that was heavily grazed by the local town goats, horses and cattle to the vibrant ecosystem that it is today.

The reserve includes three walking loops; the Coolibah Loop, Wilga Loop and Gidgee Loop, do one or do all three. Each of these walks offers something different and there is one that suits all ages and levels of fitness. The landscape is part of the Mitchell Grass Downs region – one of the most extensive natural grassland ecosystems in the world. The clay soil formed is from sediment that accumulated on the bottom of the ancient lakes and seabeds during the Cretaceous period, 100 million years ago.

Ecosystems range from Coolibah-fringed waterholes to the adjacent, flat and sparsely vegetated cracking-clay floodplains and surrounding low open gidgee woodlands. Records to date show at least 13 mammals, 10 fish, 2 crustaceans, 130 birds, 11 frogs, 22 reptiles and 166 plant species occur in the various habitats, some of which are seasonal. These species are highly adapted to the arid climate and like the Stripe-faced Dunnart, many live in the cracks in the clay soils. Floods are highly variable and larger

floods can occur every two to three years breaking out from Thomson River and associated creeks spreading to the fringes of town. Wildlife seize on this opportunity to breed and make use of the bountiful floodplain wetlands.

A place where there is nothing but you and nature, a birdwatchers and bushwalkers paradise. Take the kids on a path of discovery and see the landscapes through their eyes.

The skate park is fully undercover, surrounded by greenery with a playground and BBQ facilities. This is where you can ride your scooters, skate boards, BMX bikes or roller blades.

captain starlight story: starlight’s lookout (50KM FROM LONGREACH)

In the last 140 years, Harry Redford has become a popular local legend. Captain Starlight who is a character from the novel ‘Robbery Under Arms’ is based on Harry Redford. Legend tells it that he became part of the outback folktale when in 1870, with the company of two other people, he set out from ‘Bowen Downs’ with about 1000 head of stolen cattle. The cattle were scattered across large unexplored country travelling along the Barcoo River, Cooper Creek and the Strzelecki Track heading into South Australia. The mob of cattle included a white bull which was a problem for Harry as it was recognisable. He sold the white bull at ‘Hill Hill Station’ in South Australia so he could purchase supplies from the station store, where the bull was found by a tracker. The bull was later shipped back to Queensland as evidence against Harry at his trial. Harry continued from ‘Hill Hill Station’ towards ‘Blanchwater Station’ where he decided to sell the entire herd of cattle. The group moved south to Adelaide where Harry continued back to the Eastern States. Not knowing the whereabouts of the companions, Harry faced charges of cattle stealing; the trial was held in Roma, Queensland. The jury returned a verdict of ‘not guilty’, thus ending one of the most daring escapades in recent history. Starlight’s Lookout is Harry Redford’s legacy of Longreach. Also known as Cassidy Knob, this hill rises gently over the surrounding plains. Harry is suspected to have placed a man on this hill to overwatch the gathering of the cattle.

The small township of Yaraka is nestled between mesa hills with the backdrop being the Yang Yang Ranges offering unique and spectacular picture postcard scenery – a photographer’s delight. The gem that Yaraka can offer to visitors is the nearby Mount Slowcombe with a tar sealed road winding its way to the top making it easily accessible even for cars. The 360 degree views from the top of this mesa hill leave every visitor shaking their heads in disbelief that so few people have discovered this spectacular outback gem which has been compared to being Queensland’s equivalent of the Northern Territory’s Kakadu. Not only does Mount Slowcombe offer awesome views, it also has an electric BBQ, covered seating and toilet facilities to enhance the experience.

Emerge from thick mulga scrub to lofty escarpments and rocky gorges where elusive yellow-footed rock-wallabies hide and views surprise. Be captivated by colourful sunsets over distant plains and explore heritage sites for an insight into the hardships faced by those living here in the years gone by. Mulga scrub covers much of 144,000ha Idalia, and mature mulga has good leaf litter cover and fallen logs that make ideal fauna habitat.

Dawson gums and Mountain Yapunyah trees break the monotonous mulga green on upper slopes; while river red gums and popular box grow on sandy flats beside the usually dry Bulloo River.

Enjoy almost every outback experience in one amazing park. Birdwatch, fish or camp at a billabong; see spinifex on red desert sand dunes; delve into the past at historical sites and 4WD into rugged rocky scarps where secretive yellowfooted rock-wallabies hide. At Welford’s southern boundary, the Barcoo River cuts a green and brown swathe west from rugged, rocky mulga-clad ranges towards Mitchell grass plains and some of the most easterly red sand dunes in Australia. Seek contrasting landscapes, varied wildlife and the shade and tranquillity of majestic river red gums and coolibahs along river channels that bring life-giving water to thirsty country. Aboriginal wells, stone hearths and other cultural sites are scattered across the 124,000ha park. Welford’s pise (rammed earth) homestead built in 1882 is one of only a few still occupied in Queensland but is not open to the public.
