WELCOME TO COUNTRY Yuwi People of the country that surrounds the Mackay Region, from the high peaks of Cathu National Park and coastal region of Midge Point in the north, down to the pristine waters of Cape Palmerston in the south, west to the diverse rain forest areas of Eungella (land in the clouds) and to the many abundant coastal regions around Cape Hillsborough, the start of the world’s longest volcanic chain the Cosgrove Hot Spot, and out into the sea waters to the many offshore islands, respectfully request that as you prepare to immerse yourself within our country, that you do so knowing the importance and the sacredness of these lands and waters to Yuwi people and understand the gravity of our obligation to protect and care for it under lore. As we warmly welcome you, please enter with an equal important intent. We encourage you, as a guest to Yuwi Country, embrace this beautiful country by opening your heart and clearing your mind. We ask that you take the time to allow the inseparable spirit of this land and sea, its flora and fauna and our ancestral people, to soak deep into your essence, and in doing so give true respect and understanding of what has occurred here in Yuwi country. Take the time and care to reflect on the recent history of its people as this remains ever present in spirit in this country overlayed and protected by our ancient ancestors of time passed. Our ancestors cared and maintained this land and sea through their beautiful, wise ancient knowledge systems that remains all powerful and strongly endures for Yuwi people today and long into the future. Let us all stand together knowing that we human beings belong to country, and she is vital for our survival. May your time here be transformational and everlasting! For Barada Barna People, elders are respected in our community as wise and knowledgeable people. They hold and pass down our history, our stories and our traditions. He is currently studying a bachelor of contemporary Australian Indigenous Art at the Queensland College of Art. Mooney’s practice includes digital illustrations, drawing and print-making and street art – inspired by history, culture, family and community stories Mooney uses his art practice to share his stories of what it is like to be an indigenous person in modern Australia. With his various mediums he captures the struggles and hardships First Nations peoples have gone through but tells a story of resilience and survival and how far Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander peoples and South Sea Islander peoples have come.

Welcome to Koinmerburra Country. The Koinjmal People would like to invite you to our beautiful coast, where the freshwater meets the saltwater, where the wetlands meet the sea. There are so many things you can see and experience in our region. There is nothing more wonderful than waking up at Clairview, looking out across the sea grass beds and seeing a pod of dugong feeding or watching turtles bask on the mud flats when the tide goes out. The St Lawrence Wetland Weekend is all about community spirit and is a great way to experience what the area has to offer. You can use it as a base to explore the region to camp, fish and learn about our unique country and what it has to offer. Koinjmal People welcome you to visit, enjoy and explore our untouched coastline.

GETTING HERE By Air Mackay Airport is serviced by major carriers Virgin Australia, Qantas and Jetstar. Moranbah Airport is serviced by Virgin Australia and Qantas. Short and long-term car parking is available at both airports. By Rail Queensland Rail travels to and from Mackay, with the train station located in Paget, 5km south of the city centre. By Road Major coach operators include Mackay in their scheduled services from destinations throughout Queensland.

TOP WILDLIFE EXPERIENCES Spot platypus in the wild at Broken River, a tranquil freshwater environment within Australia’s longest stretch of sub-tropical rainforest, Eungella National Park. Platypus viewing platforms, Broken River Visitor Information Centre, Eungella Dam Road Enjoy sunrise with kangaroos and wallabies who feed on a beach at Cape Hillsborough National Park each morning. FINCH HATTON GORGE A wonderful landscape of waterfalls, lush flora and volcanic boulder formations make Finch Hatton Gorge a must-see attraction.

BUSHWALKING The Mackay Region boasts popular walking tracks from five-minute circuits to three and five-day treks. Below are some popular trails in the region. Sky Window Circuit Eungella Dam Road. 5-10 minutes, 250m, a short and level, wheelchair and pram-accessible track with views across the Pioneer Valley. If you’re looking for more challenge, look out for the sign to Pine Grove-Cedar Grove Track (4km return) to view the magnificent Tree Arch.

Take a walk through the rainforest on a 1.6km journey to the beautiful Araluen waterfall and rockpool, or continue on 1.4km to reach the Wheel of Fire cascades, with another spectacular waterfall and a large rock pool. Accommodation and dining options are available nearby, as is an exciting zipline experience through the rainforest.

Rainforest Discovery Circuit: near Broken River Visitor Information Centre, Eungella Dam Road. 20 to 30 minutes, 780m circuit, a short and level, wheelchair and pram-accessible track from the Broken River picnic area. Be on the lookout for platypus in the rainforest waters. Kommo Toera Trail: Keeleys Road, Slade Point. 40 to 50 minutes, 1km, explore this unique wetland ecosystem through Melaleuca trees, with diverse wildlife and plant habitats. Don’t forget the insect repellent! Cape Hillsborough Walking Tracks: see page 22 Mackay Highlands Great Walk: Starts at Eungella National Park, ends at Moonlight Dam. 3-5 days, 56km (one way), for the experienced bushwalker, explore cool and cloudy rainforest, towering trees, dense palm groves, dramatic cliffs, peaks and spires. HOOKED ON MACKAY

Known as one of the best recreational fishing destinations along the east coast of Australia, the Mackay Region offers 365 days of fishing where you’ll be hooked on a huge variety of species wherever you choose to cast your line.

TOP FISHING SPOTS RIVERS AND CREEKS

LAND-BASED

The mangrove-lined creeks of the Mackay Region create bountiful fish habitats. Nowhere is this more evident than the net free zone that stretches from St Helens Beach to Cape Hillsborough.

No boat? No worries! The region’s 31 beaches, the Mackay Marina and several jetties along the Pioneer River all allow easy access for anglers to target anything from bream to barracuda.

FRESHWATER

OFFSHORE ISLANDS AND REEFS

Located within 90 minutes of Mackay are three freshwater impoundments. Kinchant and Teemburra Dams are well-known for massive barramundi, while Eungella Dam is home to monster sooty grunter. Theresa Creek Dam, near Clermont, is also a popular place to hook a grunter. 12

Anglers are guaranteed to hook a sizeable catch off Mackay’s picturesque series of islands and coral reefs. Viable tactics include chasing bait balls for mackerel and tuna, retrieving poppers across reefs and jigging for monsters of the deep.

Escape the hustle and bustle and immerse yourself in complete serenity when you explore the many camping spots in the Mackay Region.

Cape Hillsborough and Hibiscus Coast: Looking for beachfront camping with nothing but ocean, sand and fishing? There are plenty of camping grounds dotted along the Hibiscus Coast including Smalleys Beach, Ball Bay, Haliday Bay, Seaforth and St Helens Beach. Eungella National Park: Find your family camping haven amid the misty mountains at popular camping spots like Broken River bush camp, Fern Flat or The Diggings camp areas. Go further inland and off the grid at the spacious Eungella Dam, which is perfect for fishing, boating and watersports. Cape Palmerston: Switch off and enjoy all nature has to offer with three basic camping sites, only accessible by four-wheel-drive. Choose from Cape Creek, Windmill Bay or Cape Palmerston camping areas, with picnic tables and pit toilets available. A nearby caravan park provides powered sites, camping areas and bungalows, along with all other necessities, if required. 16

St Lawrence: Just 6km east of the Bruce Highway is an incredible natural wetland full of abundant bird life. The spacious Recreation Grounds are a popular vantage point to stay overnight (or longer) and visit the wetlands any time of the year. It features showers, toilets, barbecues, picnic tables and a dump point. Take a drive into the township for a view of the historical church, cemetery, railway building and council office building. Lake Elphinstone: This free camping area just outside Nebo sits alongside a natural lake and is popular for fishing, kayaking and watersports. CAPE HILLSBOROUGH & HIBISCUS COAST Whether it’s enjoying the sunrise with iconic wildlife, beach combing on quiet coastlines, or reeling in a big catch, Cape Hillsborough and the Hibiscus Coast is a dream location for many travellers.

BUSHWALKING TRAILS Witness a host of unique Australian wildlife, including 140 species of birds, reptiles, turtles, possums, wallabies and a variety of butterflies, when you take on some of the incredible bushwalks at Cape Hillsborough National Park. The Diversity Boardwalk (EASY) 1.2 kilometre return. Featuring melaleuca woodland, mangrove and open eucalyptus forest and vine thicket, the first 300 metres of the track is accessible to wheelchairs and strollers. Yuibera Plant Trail (EASY) 1.2 kilometre return. Walk or drive along the gravel road to Hidden Valley to learn more about the Yuibera people’s traditional use of plants in the area. 22

Beachcomber Cove Track (MODERATE) 2.2 kilometre return. Start from the northern end of Cape Hillsborough picnic area and pass through open eucalyptus forest and remnant rainforest with hoop pines, ferns and vines to Beachcomber Cove, featuring amazing views from the lookout. At low tide, return to Cape Hillsborough picnic area along the beach. Andrews Point Track (MODERATE TO DIFFICULT) 5.2 kilometre return or 2.8 kilometre return via beach. Follow the beach to reach the start of the track. After climbing numerous steps, you will be rewarded with spectacular views from several lookouts. At low tide, walk to Wedge Island or return to the picnic area along the beach.

INDIGENOUS HISTORY AND CULTURE

TOP EXPERIENCES AT CAPE HILLSBOROUGH & HIBISCUS COAST Wake up early and enjoy a spectacular beach sunrise as wallabies and kangaroos feed on the shoreline at Casuarina Beach, Cape Hillsborough National Park.

The Yuibera people lived in the Cape Hillsborough area for thousands of years and signs of their special connection to the area are still present. Mount Mandurana, commonly referred to as ‘The Leap’, was the scene of a dramatic conflict between European settlers and Indigenous peoples. GETTING THERE Cape Hillsborough National Park is 50km north of Mackay. Travel north on the Bruce Highway for 20km. Turn right onto Seaforth Road and travel a further 20km. Turn right onto Cape Hillsborough Road. The public carpark and main entrance to Cape Hillsborough National Park is 10km along that road. Tip: Don’t forget to stop in at the Old Station Teahouse on the way. They serve delicious food, tea, coffee and high tea in lush rainforest settings.

SUNRISE WITH WILDLIFE Experience the quintessential Australian travel photo with sunrise on the beach with the wallabies and kangaroos who feed on the shoreline. Stand back and let the wildlife do their thing. Feeding the animals is strictly prohibited.

Pinnacle: Try a renowned Pinnacle Pie or a hearty crumbed steak from the popular pub at Pinnacle. Teemburra Dam is also nearby and is stocked with sooty grunter and barramundi. Finch Hatton Gorge: Enjoy the charm of the Finch Hatton township before immersing yourself in nature at Finch Hatton Gorge, part of Eungella National Park. Bushwalk through rainforest, zipline through the trees or experience a once-ina-lifetime scuba diving experience. At Finch Hatton Gorge you will find beautiful waterfalls, surrounded by sheer cliffs and cascades. GETTING THERE

CHASING WATERFALLS

The total travel time between Mackay and Eungella National Park is approximately one hour and 20 minutes but there are many stops along the way that are worth a visit.

Travel through the quaint country towns of Mirani, Gargett, Pinnacle and Finch Hatton before heading to one of the region’s most spectacular natural attractions, Finch Hatton Gorge. It’s about a 12km drive from the Finch Hatton Showgrounds to the gorge entry along Owens Creek Loop Road.

The quiet town of Marian certainly packs a punch with plenty to see and do. Check out the Melba House Visitor Information Centre, with interesting history and a fun playground nearby. There’s plenty of places to stop for a bite to eat.

Once there, embark on a short bushwalk to Araluen Cascades (2.8km return) or go a little further to Wheel of Fire (4.2km return). Both feature scenic waterfalls and rockpools surrounded by volcanic boulder formations. If you’ve timed your visit well, head to Forest Flying for a ziplining experience through the rainforest. Book ahead to avoid disappointment, with two sessions per day available.

NATIONAL PARK ADVENTURES Enjoy epic views as you travel up the winding Eungella Range and take in the clear mountain air from the 1930s Chalet, which offers meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as hang gliding for the experienced flyer. Further along, the Sky Window Circuit is a short walk (wheelchair and pramfriendly) boasting views of the entire Pioneer Valley region below. Continue on to Broken River where you can visit the Visitor Information Centre or go platypus spotting from the special viewing platforms.

You can even take a selfguided Mackay City & Heritage Walk (page 21). Travel the Bluewater Trail to explore the city and all its attractions. This shared pathway winds its way along the banks of the beautiful blue Pioneer River, linking many of Mackay’s valuable facilities and natural assets. Sunset Bay at Eimeo Beach is aptly named… it’s one of the best spots in the region to capture sunset through the palm trees.

DOLPHIN HEADS This pretty headland offers a family-friendly resort providing accommodation, recreational activities and cocktails by the pool with live music. A popular spot for photographers.

CAPE PALMERSTON

Situated approximately 80 kilometres south of Mackay, Cape Palmerston offers such diverse ecology, from a seemingly untouched pristine coastline to mangroves, sand dunes and rainforest.

CAPE PALMERSTON NATIONAL PARK Cape Palmerston National Park covers 7,200 hectares and boasts sandy dunes, unspoilt beaches and rocky headlands, making it the ideal location for nature enthusiasts. Access to the national park and beach is via 4WD only, giving travellers the opportunity to make their trip as adventurous or relaxing as they like! Check tide times before going as it’s not passable in high tide. Fishing and crabbing: Bream, flathead and cod are popular chases in this area, with anglers also reporting catching mangrove jack and queenfish. Fishing off the rocks or off the coast in a boat will increase your chances of reeling in reef fish or mackerel. 38

Wildlife: Whether it’s birdwatching, fishing, crabbing or simply exploring the surrounds, Cape Palmerston is certainly a treasure-trove of wildlife experiences! It’s not unusual to see kangaroos and wallabies graze in the open grasslands and many bird species inhabit the coastal woodlands. Sunrise or sunset: An early morning means the opportunity to watch the sun rise over the ocean, or kick back with a cold drink after a day of fishing and watch the sun set over Mt Funnel. How to get there: Turn off the Bruce Highway at Ilbilbie and drive east towards Greenhill. Before Greenhill, turn left onto Cape Palmerston Road.

STAY Self-sufficient campers can set up at Windmill Bay, Cape Creek or sleep under the stars right on the beach. Pit toilets and picnic tables are available. Camping fees apply. 4WD vehicles only. Those without 4WD transport can stay at Cape Palmerston Caravan Park, set on 63 acres of land and adjacent to the beach. The park accommodates all RVs, motorhomes, caravans and campers with powered and unpowered sites, as well as glamping.

The distinctive 344-metre Mt Funnel features a steep rocky outcrop at the top, which resembles a ‘plug’, and is an impressive sight from all angles.

The Isaac Coast is home to rustic beachside communities nestled along a natural stretch of shoreline and features abundant wildlife.

GREENHILL & ILBILBIE

CARMILA

These idyllic locations have wonderful views of the ocean and surrounding districts. There’s onshore, estuary and offshore fishing near local reefs and islands and plenty of bushland for keen walkers to take advantage of magnificent views.

A blend of beachfront bliss mixed with country character, Carmila is an unspoilt paradise and the beach offers a nearby convenient three-day rest and camping area. Facilities include toilets, barbecues, picnic tables and boat ramps. Hike or take a 4WD excursion to Flaggy Rock Bluff for breathtaking 360-degree ocean and rural views.

Visit Yarrawonga and Notch Point Reserves to go camping, fishing and crabbing, or visit between October to January to see the nesting turtles. Access to Cape Palmerston National Park is via Greenhill Road for 4WDs only. 40

CLAIRVIEW A palm tree lined stretch of golden sand makes Clairview the perfect spot to pull up for a few days, weeks or even months! Famous for its crabbing and fishing, Clairview is also home to a protected sanctuary for dugongs, an endangered marine mammal. You may be lucky enough to see one from the beach. The boat ramp provides easy access for a day on the water or relax at one of the beachside picnic spots and view turtles swimming in the area.

The St Lawrence Wetlands Weekend won gold at the Queensland Tourism Awards for Festivals and Events in 2021. The weekend features workshops, tours, cooking demonstrations and more!

ST LAWRENCE The small town of St Lawrence has big attractions for the nature and history lover. The St Lawrence Wetlands boast an abundant bird life, with 92 bird species recorded including nationally threatened waterbirds. Take a stroll through town and view the heritagelisted Anglican Church built in 1898 and cemetery dating back to the mid-1800s. Enjoy camping at the St Lawrence Recreation Grounds next to the wetlands or drive up the Connors Range to Schneider’s Inn Lookout for panoramic views of the wetlands, coastline and islands.

NEBO

MOUNT BRITTON & LAKE ELPHINSTONE

The cattle-grazing town of Nebo features the heritage-listed Nebo Pub built in 1862 overlooking the Nebo River and the historic Nebo Museum.

Visit the abandoned mining town of Mount Britton (approximately 35 minutes north-east of Nebo), founded in 1880. The old grid of streets that remain are dotted with interpretive signage that retains a sense of what once existed.

The annual Nebo Rodeo attracts competitors and viewers from across the country. It’s been touted as one of the best rodeo events in Australia!

Lake Elphinstone is a great spot for fishing and water sports fanatics. Visitors can camp free of charge for limited length stays with toilets and shower facilities.

PEAK RANGE NATIONAL PARK Travel along the Peak Downs Highway for panoramic views of the Peak Ranges, part of the Cosgrove Hotspot, between Moranbah, Clermont and Dysart. Peak Range National Park consists of Wolfang Peak, Lord’s Table Mountain and Gemini Mountains. You can enjoy bushwalking and photography, with spectacular geological features, views and historical interest.

MORANBAH Featuring new and modern facilities, Moranbah was created specifically for miners and their families. Visit the popular town square where you can have a moment of quiet reflection at the stunning Miners’ Memorial, see an exhibition at The Coalface Art Gallery and enjoy the boutique shops and cafés. Step into the Big Red Rhino Bucket at the town’s entrance to experience the scale of a dragline from the 1970s.

CLERMONT Locals talk about dinosaur footprints preserved in rock formations in creek beds between Dysart and Middlemount.

Established in 1862, the town of Clermont is one of the most historic towns in Northern Australia. The interactive Clermont Historical Centre contains information and artefacts related to the area’s rich and diverse history. Visit Hoods Lagoon or strike gold in Queensland’s most accessible goldfields surrounding Clermont.

How long have you lived in Mackay? I have lived in Mackay for 14 years. I was a fulltime mum then, so a career change for my partner was an opportunity for us to experience sunnier Queensland. Where are your favourite places to photograph in the Mackay Region? Depending on what you want to achieve with your photography, you can find beauty everywhere if you look and take the time. There are the ‘touristy’ spots such as Lamberts Beach lookout, Mackay Regional

Botanic Gardens, Mackay Harbour breakwater, Queens Park, Eungella etc. If you are into street photography, you should check out the city centre’s laneway murals, or take a walk from the Bluewater Lagoon to the east end of River Street, and capture the architecture of our heritage buildings in the city. If you are interested in landscape or wildlife photography, you will love the sunrise/sunset with wallabies at Cape Hillsborough, the waterfall at Finch Hatton, or the serenity of Eungella Dam.
