THE VALLEYS OF MACLEAY AND NAMBUCCA
From the mountains to the sea, there is no reason to bypass this haven on New South Wales' mid north coast.
Around 500 kilometres from both Brisbane and Sydney, the Nambucca and Macleay Valleys are spectacular, with stunning mountain ranges and beach and ocean views at your fingertips. Go Camping Fishing & 4WD Adventures investigates some of the region’s best haunts.
C
onveniently located mid - way between Sydney and Brisbane, just a skip off the new M1 motorway, you will find the valleys of Macleay and Nambucca. These two valleys offer stunning coastal beauty, rich history and a hinterland just begging to be explored. If it’s a relaxed, unspoilt and relatively undiscovered coastal or hinterland location you yearn for, then you must visit these regions. 30 |
To the east of the motorway you will meander through coastal villages and small riverside townships with an abundance of beach activities, hiking trails, country style restaurants and independent retailers perfect for dining out or a spot of shopping. West of the highway is Australian mountain country at its best, babbling clear creeks and deep valleys, thick timber forest and the distinctive call of bellbirds make for great exploring!

HISTORIC AND ICONIC LANDMARKS
Every region has plenty of historical treasures to be discovered. Dust off your country music dancing boots to learn all about Slim Dusty and visit the pub made famous by his iconic Pub with No Beer song, learn all about being an inmate at Trial Bay Gaol, or marvel at the elevation of Smoky Cape Lighthouse. The newly opened Slim Dusty Centre in Slim’s hometown of Kempsey, contains the Slim Dusty Museum and features objects and images from the family’s extensive collection and archives, as well as contributions from fans and friends from all over the world. Enjoy the costumes, images of Australian life, music of some of Australia’s finest musicians and insights into a country’s rich music history that only 60 years of touring can provide, and of course learn more about Slim’s first steps into show business. The Museum is open daily from 10am until 4pm. And, if you happen to be in the area in October, time your visit for the 13th annual Slim Dusty Country Music Festival starting on 17 October 2016. www.slimdustycentre.com.au
cold stone walls seem out of place with the five star coastal views that surround it. The gaol was built to house prisoners who were brought to the area in 1886 to construct a breakwater to make Trial Bay a safe harbour halfway between Sydney and Brisbane and was later used as an internment camp in WW1 for residents of German descent. Today, the gaol is a must-see attraction with a well curated museum of historic artefacts from the site, and a memorial to those who spent time within its walls. Take advantage of the gaol’s rocky ocean outcrop and take a short stroll from Trial Bay Gaol to Monument Hill Walking Track. Along this walk you will see
reminders left by the German internees such as flannel flowers, planted by the internees because they reminded them of edelweiss and of home, and a monument built as a tribute to German internees who passed away in Trial Bay Gaol during World War I. Perched high on a headland in the beautiful Hat Head National Park is Smoky Cape Lighthouse, which is the most elevated lighthouse on the east coast, standing on the granite headland 140 metres (460ft) above the sea. The original lighthouse keeper’s cottages have been converted into B&B cottages where you can stay for the night.

EXPLORE THE REGION'S NATURAL BEAUTY Nature lovers are spoilt for choice along this picturesque stretch of coastline from kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, fishing, surfing, whale watching and scenic driving routes. Kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding and canoeing are all on offer at the vast number of beaches or rivers. You can access the Nambucca River near the V-Wall or Bellwood Park in Nambucca Heads or on the northern side of the bridge in Macksville. Warrell Creek is a scenic place to kayak and is accessible from Gumma Reserve near Macksville. Gumma Reserve is also a great traditional style bush campground. Or if you prefer ocean kayaking visit Forster Beach at Scotts Head or Trial Bay at South West Rocks. Surfing is synonymous with the Macleay and Nambucca Valleys. Iconic surf breaks at both Crescent Head and Scotts Head have long been a drawcard for surfers travelling up and down the east coast of Australia. For the more adventurous at heart surfing lessons are available at South West Rocks, Scotts Head, Nambucca Heads or Crescent Head. From May to November it’s whale watching season. Headlands along the 36 |
coastline all provide suitable vantage points to search for humpback whales and dolphins. Captain Cook Lookout in Nambucca Heads and Smoky Cape Lighthouse in Hat Head National Park are both ideal whale watching locations. The delight of spotting one or more of these majestic creatures will be etched in your memory forever. Boat ramps are plentiful, so get out and launch the boat for a day of fishing either at sea or along the rivers. If you’re staying near Scotts Head there is a boat ramp in front of the Surf Club while in Nambucca Heads and Macksville you can launch from designated boat ramps into the river. Both Stuarts Point and Fisherman’s Reach have boat ramps too which are easily accessible with an unlimited choice of beach and river fishing spots. Don’t have the boat? Don’t worry, there are kilometres of coastline and riverside to cast your line. Try fishing from the beach and headlands in Hat Head, South West Rocks or Crescent Head to nab bream, tarwhine, jewfish, flathead, whiting, mullet, tailor and dart. Many of these fish, as well as drummer, can also be caught from the headlands

and rocky outcrops along the coast. The river, estuaries and back waters offer blackfish, bream, whiting, tailor, mullet, flathead, and jewfish caught downstream of Kempsey. The upper Macleay River is recognised as one of the last strongholds of the Australian Bass (or “perch”) in New South Wales and excellent catches can be expected from October to April. Scenic drives for both 2WD and 4WD vehicles are many. The Pines Picnic area in the Way Way State Forest is a perfect drive for a gourmet picnic or simple barbeque. You will marvel at the sky reaching flooded gums and the ancient hoop pines. Known locally as The Pines, it borders the Yarriabini National Park and if you have a 4WD continue on the road to the Yarriabini Lookout. No visit to the area is complete without enjoying the magnificent views from Yarrahapinni Mountain spanning across the coastland and overlooking the diverse farming country. Or maybe retracing several World Rally courses including the Valla Loop and the Williams Hill Loop, is more your pace. These drives meander through pretty bushland and prime farmland and offer many places to fish, swim or picnic.
