ew Zealand is one of the world’s most isolated countries, however it is also one of the world’s greatest tourist destinations. Some may think that New Zealand is an island just offshore of Australia, but that is not the case. For example, New Zealand is actually much the same distance from Australia as London is from Moscow, and as close to the equator as Buenos Aires in South America. A country of stunning natural
beauty, New Zealand is known as ‘the land of the long white cloud’ and under that cloud is the home of many Arabian horses. New Zealand has approximately 73 Registered Purebred Arabian Studs located from the far North Island, right down to the bottom end of the South Island. The NZ Arab Horse Breeders Society has been handling the registry in New Zealand since 1971, however
the first Arabian horses arrived into the country in the mid to late 1800s. Many of these imports were bound for sheep stations in the South Island. New Zealand currently has approximately 2500 registered Purebred horses and around half that number of registered Derivative Arabians. The show scene is centred around four A Class shows, two on the North Island
and two on the South Island, and the AA Class National show alternates between islands year about. Most local agricultural shows also offer Arabian rings which are often well attended. There are several active Arabian Horse Clubs who run the shows under the NZAHBS rules as well as hosting seminars and social events. Such as is the case around the world, many of New Zealand’s Purebred and Derivative horses compete in a variety of disciplines. At the 2018 Horse of the Year competitions in Hastings, a central part of New Zealand’s horse scene, in almost every ring amazing Arabian Derivative horses either took out titles or were amongst the top place getters. New Zealand has a very active endurance scene, or distance riding as some locals call it, across both Islands. Beginning at the very top of the North Island, Kelaray Stud is the furthermost northern Arabian Stud in New Zealand. ‘The past couple of seasons have been extremely busy, not only because the team have been producing their own horses to show, but we have taken on a select number of client horses,’ says owner Kelly Mason. There are new developments in the breeding barn at Kelaray as well. The Purebred filly BFF Minerva (ZT Marwetyn x Brumarba Shai Dove) was bred in partnership, then sold as a weanling filly to Graham Jenkins. She was the first filly born in New Zealand by ZT Marwteyn. Minerva was then Reserve Champion Filly at her first outing at the North Island Championships, and was then Champion Junior Filly and Supreme Purebred at the Taranaki A Class show. ‘Also shown at the Taranaki show was our own Kelaray Selene (Simeon Saraaf x Simeon Seana), a rising three-year-old black Purebred filly who took out the Reserve Champion Junior Filly title. We plan on breeding her this coming season. ‘We had some wonderful foals in 2017. Miracle of Love had a very tall and scopey colt sired by our resident stallion Sir Riley MTC (Magnum Psyche x Venere) who was sold at four months of age to Kim Wilkinson from Tauranga. We have retained breedings to this young colt
to use in the future over our mares. Simeon Seana had a lovely filly also sired by Sir Riley MTC, who was sadly lost in a paddock accident. Brumarba Shai Dove once again proved her worth and produced an exceptional filly bred in partnership and sired by Crave FF, the first by this remarkable sire born in New Zealand, which we aptly named BFF Cinderella. We believe this filly is one of Dove’s best to date. As such she has been retained as a future broodmare for the stud. We do hope to get her out to a few shows this coming season.’ There are four mares bred for the coming season, with Brumarba Shai Dove in foal to RHR Heir of Marwan, Miracle of Love in foal to Zeus NS (by Ajman Moniscione) and Simeon Seana is in foal to EKS Bey Al Gazal. This will be the first foal sired by EKS Bey Al Gazal in New Zealand. ‘We have found that the Marwan and Gazal lines cross extremely well with our mares, our first Gazal Al Shaqab filly, Kelaray Goddess of Love, having been sold to Sweden. ‘Our one and only derivative foal this season will be out of Aloha Touch of Class, who is now 20 years old and is in foal to Kahurangi Sillhouette, a paint stallion. We are hoping for a coloured filly to retain for the future.’ Kelaray keep two mares in Australia, Bryanne MI and Orabanda Harlan Fashn, the latter of whom has been bred to Echos of Marwan for her next foal. Dawn Valley Arabians is another stud set in the ‘winter-less’ north of New Zealand, just a 20-minute drive from the beautiful and picturesque Bay of Islands. ‘We have a small band of individually selected broodmares based on pedigree,

type and, most importantly, nature, from which we breed three or four foals a season,’ says Adele Maraki. ‘Each of our mares has a special place in our heart and our home. All of the mares are imported from Australia and each have accolades in the show ring and bring subtle differences to our program.’ The elegant mares of Dawn Valley Arabians include Majesta MI (Guiliano x Mustang’s Magnum), Valencia MI (DA Valentino x Audacia), Marwans Magnifique MPA (Echos of Marwan x Picnic Park Pazzaz), Psyches Fame (Psyches Turbo x Enchanting Fame), Ballev Johar (Simeon Safsaal x Ballev Maleeka) and Romantic MI (Magnum Forty Four x Rimaraa) who resides in Australia. Adele has retained three fillies from these mares, Dawn Valley Majestica (Echos of Marwan x Majesta MI) and two RHR Heir of Marwan daughters, Dawn Valley Djemila (x Silhoette Desiree) and Dawn Valley Mystique (x Majesta MI). One of New Zealand’s longest running and successful breeding farms, Gerzanne Stud, owned by Bev Jones and Sue Spratt, is situated in the Bay of Plenty region of the North Island. ‘Gerzanne has never stood their stallions at public stud, so when we look at the Honours Board in our stables and see the list of New Zealand National Champions and Reserve National Champions we are extremely proud that our successes are all from mares we have bred,’ says Bev. ‘Looking at their names, most go back to our foundation mares that were imported 50 years ago, each one an improvement on the previous generation and some now fifth generation bred Gerzanne horses,’ says Sue proudly. In 2011 on a visit to the Salon De Cheval, Paris there was a mare that took Bev and Sue’s breath away. After their return to New Zealand, neither Bev nor Sue could get her out of their system, often discussing how to bring her bloodlines into their breeding program – the mare was Emandoria. Sired by Gazal Al Shaqab (Anaza El Farid x Karjora) and from the Michalow State Stud’s phenomenal ‘E’ line, being out of Emanda (Ecaho x Emanacja), Emandoria had, at nine years of age, taken the exclusive European Triple Crown title. ‘Countries the world over have their Triple Crowns but, in our opinion, the European is one of the hardest to win. To take this coveted title, the horse has to take Gold at three title shows, The All Nations Cup in Aachen, the European Championships and then the Paris World Championships. Not only must they win all three titles, they must DESERT HERITAGE ARABIAN STUD

do so in the same year.’ At that same show, there was a beautiful colt, Emerald J who was out of Emandoria by QR Marc. ‘At the age of 84 the time had come when importing another stallion was not on the cards, so in the last two years we have used frozen semen from Belgium and now have two beautiful Emerald J babies in our paddock,’ says Bev. SS Emeera, a filly and SS Sirius, a colt have surpassed all of the high expectations placed upon them. ‘We cannot wait for the next chapter. As we do all the breeding, handling and so on, we have found the use of frozen semen the way forward for us.’ To that end, Gerzanne has mares in foal to Shiraz de Lafon (Shanghai EA x Diacira De Lafon) and ES Harir (AJ Dinar x TF Magnums Magic). ‘Who knows? Perhaps these foals will be ready in time for when the 2019 WAHO Conference is held in Australia. There will be pre- and post-conference tours to New Zealand, and Gerzanne Stud should firmly be on your list of “must visit” farms while you are in Australasia. You won’t be disappointed.’ Genuine Gold Arabians are based in Kerikeri Northland area of New Zealand. ‘We started with the purchase of the palomino derivative Arabian Mahachi Gold Rush as a twoyear-old colt who we trained for the show ring and breeding,’ remembers owner Georgia Grimme. Being 25% American Saddlebred and 75% Arabian, Mahachi Gold Rush is sired by Phantom from LS Dvasja and would be classed as a National Show Horse in some parts of the world. ‘Two years ago we started him under saddle which he enjoyed, and is now showing great talent while starting his jumping career.’ Mahachi Gold Rush’s first foal was broken in this season and like his sire, shows great promise for a future jumping career.
CARMEN TUITE
‘In November 2017 we purchased the very handsome two-yearold colt Quicksilver RA from Australia. He was bred by Karen Hodges of Ramadan Arabians, and sired by Chippendale V from Ramadan Dream Maker.’ This much admired youngster has since been sashed National Reserve Champion Colt and taken out three other supreme titles including Supreme Arabian at the Royal Easter Show in New Zealand.

Shakespeare Arabians is a small stud located close to Pukekohe, with views of the Bombay Hills of Auckland. Owner Sheridene Swift states, ‘I started horse ownership in 1977 with a pony with Arabian blood and then moving on to a Derivative gelding until my late teens. In 1986 when Darron and I married we purchased a Purebred gelding and joined the Auckland Arabian Horse Club and started to show and became active members, moving on to becoming secretary for a number of years and now a life member.’

In 1994 Sheridene and Darron bred their first foal, a filly sired by Arabesque Aziez (AU) who is still at the farm today. They now have six Purebred Arabians and have one foal due this year from their imported Mulawa-bred mare Fiamma MI. Shakespeare Arabians have competed both Purebred and Derivative horses over the years in open company, up to Horse of the Year level. ‘We have now got the breeding bug again after raising a family and hopefully will breed and show the selection of horses we have acquired over the past few years from some great Australian breeders.’ Located in Taranaki and owned by the Klemra Family, Golden Shelter Arabians have been breeding Purebreds and Derivatives for over 40 years. ‘I have had a lifelong passion for the breed,’ remembers Jenny Klemra, ‘and have bred multiple National Champions in Halter and Ridden, open endurance horses and all round versatile Arabians. For me, they must have type first and foremost, but must also be correct and trainable and be able to go out and be ridden horses.’
Through the years Jenny had long admired Ralvon Pilgrim and currently owns the stallion Willowvale Sa’arfari (Eastwinds Axiom (AU) x Dellmount Ardys), a Pilgrim grandson. Now retired, Willowvale Sa’arfari was ridden in his heyday, winning nine National Titles in Halter, Ridden and Native Arabian Costume. He was awarded the WAHO Trophy 2018 for Excellence in Halter & Ridden, Native Costume and Progeny. In recent years Jenny’s daughter Nikki’s vision to incorporate the bloodlines of Ali Jamaal has seen the stud import two Gai El Jullyen progeny from Australia, the stallion Chelleason Jullyani (x Coolrain Essence of Gold) and the mare Ahnshahn Jullyanna (x Hideaway Farm Insignia). ‘We have also acquired the very beautiful colt Chelleason Sky Hawk (Saudi El Perseus x Sophia WV) and the filly Chelleason Envy (Ghianni WPI x Europa SPA) and on lease, the dream mare Chelleason Crown Marwana (Chelleason Crown Jewel x Ghazala El Jamaal). These two mares have added the precious bloodlines of one of our most admired mares Ghazala El Jamaal and we look forward to what the future holds for these two and their offspring.’

Located just outside of Christchurch on the east coast of Canterbury of the South Island, another of New Zealand’s longest running programs still continues today at Holly Farm. It is a realisation of two lives’ work, established by Silver Sparkle (Oran x Silver Fire), bred by Lady Wentworth. Researched, experienced and studied over more than half a century, Morafic inspired Lester Marshall, and this inspiration was inherited by his son David who grew up riding a son of Shaikh Al Badi, and has culminated in the formation of a very specific breeding program.
ARABIAN STUD Kashami Arabian Stud was started by Catherine and Tony Enright some 6 years ago. With the unexpected death of Tony, Catherine has decided to continue on with their breeding programme. There are 2 breeding lines. One is Straight Egyptian – focusing on concentrating the blood of Ibn Galal (Magdi). The second is focused on our foundation mare – Bint Shahdira – she has Egyptian and Polish bloodlines with 3 crosses to Bask. Visitors are always welcome.

‘We focus on Prince Fa Moniet, Anaza Bay Shahh, Imperial Madheen, Asfour with the best athletic quality dam lines,’ says David. ‘This coming season will welcome guests to witness results... to discuss influences... to debate options and celebrate the strengths required of a top shelf Arabian Horse.’ Simeon Shakova (Prince Fa Moniet x Simeon Sukari) is one of the foundations of the program. ‘This year she is carrying a precious foal via frozen semen by Simeon Sapar (Anaza Bay Shahh x Simeon Sa’ada), my very first Straight Egyptian who I lost to colic several years ago.’ Excitement with the highest expectations drives David to continue this program, which includes the world’s youngest Straight Egyptian daughters of Prince Fa Moniet. ‘These exotic desert horses offer the modern world a tangible connection unlike any blessing you can imagine on earth.’ Another Straight Egyptian program in New Zealand is Kashami Arabian Stud, started by Catherine and Tony Enright just six years ago. With the unexpected death of Tony
early this year, Catherine has decided to continue on with their breeding program. ‘Our main focus is breeding Straight Egyptian horses, concentrating the blood of Ibn Galal (Magdi). We have the stallion Madreya (Simeon Stav x MB Madirah) and colt Kashami Shehaab (Simeon Saraaf x Bint Bint Maysamma). We have three mares, Simeon Sela (Imperial Madaar x Ansata Kamriya), Simeon Sapphire (Simeon Samech x Simeon Shuala), Bint Bint Maysamma (MB Mayal x Geshara) and her filly Kashami Moonirah by Madreya.’ Our Egyptian-related breeding is focused on foundation mare Bint Shahdira (BPL Dante x Shahdira) who was of Polish, Crabbet and Egyptian bloodlines, with three crosses to Bask. Desert Heritage Arabians is based near Geraldine in the South Island. The horses, owned by Demelza Hoogeveen, are squeezed in amongst a working dairy farm, Kintore Farm Ltd, in which Demelza and husband Nick have an equity share. Nick manages the 1600 cow operation. The farm is close to a number of tourist
attractions including Mt Sunday, the set of Edoras in the Lord of the Rings series – a truly breathtaking area of the country that has to be seen to be believed. ‘The aim is to breed beautiful, versatile and sound athletes with an emphasis on the dry desert type that the Arabian breed became famous for. In addition, a trainable temperament is a top priority.’ Foundation mare SS Shula was bred by the well-known Gerzanne Arabian Stud. Her dam is the outstanding matriarch Rula (Simeon Shomer x Seetha) and her sire is the exquisite Simeon Shemini (Asfour x Simeon Shuala). ‘Shula is the ideal broodmare and we have retained her daughters by Simeon Sapar (AU), JA Khudos (x Redwood Lodge Estonia) and the Enzo US son CRA Sihr Shahrif (US).’ The stud moved forward with the purchase of a little colt foal from Louise Cordina in Australia. After waiting for a number of years, this Egyptian-related son of Thaqib Al Nasser (Ansata Halim Shah x Imperial Madanah) made his way to New Zealand. His dam was La

Moniette (Prince Fa Moniette x Selilah) and his name was Shaheen Al Saba. ‘This horse is not only an utterly beautiful show champion, but is a qualified open endurance horse with such an enthusiasm for ridden work and life in general that he casts a spell over all who meet him.’ With only a handful of progeny, his influence on the breed is just beginning. More mares were purchased for Shaheen Al Saba, with an emphasis on ‘big movement and big booties’, but no sacrifice in type. Enter Fairview Shakla’s Shania (AU) (SK Shakla Khan x Pasquinell Shakira) who has won many champions under saddle, in halter and competed in dressage. Other mares that were obtained for Shaheen included Euralea Fire N Desire (Wind N Fire x Yanah Ibn Estopa) leased in partnership and dam of top endurance and show horses, and Redwood Lodge Estonia (Om El Abadan x Windella Silver Fire), a multi-champion mare of world class beauty. ‘Estonia has left no direct progeny for the stud but does have one treasured grand-daughter here.’ Pamela Gleeson’s Tahira Stud came about quite by chance. ‘In the beginning, there was just Saliha (Gai Cadet x Ibanez) and I, purchased from Gerzanne Stud in 1986, and I could not have wished for a better introduction to the Arabian horse. I had an accident riding and put Saliha in foal while I recovered. Her foal Tahira Nasmah by Waimeha Franchise (Crescendo x Freda) started what has become a 30 year passion.’ Nasmah was followed by her full brother Tahira Sanhedrin and then Pamela purchased another mare Farah Diba (Arabian Park Majestic x Bint El Saher),
then another A A Laurelette (Gai Cadet x Araleigh Bandera), then two young fillies joined the band, Sherwood Sheva (Sky Hawk x Faraway Ve’era) and Sherwood Josiah (Sky Hawk x Dorcas). ‘The early years were filled with listening to older breeders, watching stud displays and pouring over pedigrees. There was a lot to learn!’ At the same time, Pamela bred foals by various stallions to experiment with what she liked. In 1994, Saliha bore a colt by Silver Reflection, who was bred at Holly Farm. ‘Tahira Silver Sceptre was very beautiful and fabulous to work with, so the decision was made to retain him at stud.’

This stallion now has progeny that have been successful in a variety of disciplines including endurance, showjumping and show hunter. ‘As Tahira Silver Sceptre is now in the twilight of his life, I have been enthused in a slightly different path. The late Belinda Simons and I spent many hours studying Polish bloodlines and I now have two pure Polish mares…to date.’ Coolinda Park Edelweiss (Walidayt x Coolinda Park Dahhling) has settled into life in New Zealand well. Pamela was lucky enough to secure Electra el Emiera, sired by the Ganges son Ennis and from the imported Gabaryt daughter Esteria. This wonderful mare is due to foal this season to Negus el Adien (Pegasus x Nutella). ‘The future is as exciting as the beginning and I can’t wait!’ The stunning landscapes and friendly locals of New Zealand are closer than you think.
