N
ew Zealand is one of the world’s most isolated countries, however it is also one of the world’s greatest tourist destinations. Some may think that New Zealand is an island just offshore of Australia, but that is not the case. For example, New Zealand is actually much the same distance from Australia as London is from Moscow, and as close to the equator as Buenos Aires in South America. A country of stunning natural
beauty, New Zealand is known as ‘the land of the long white cloud’ and under that cloud is the home of many Arabian horses. New Zealand has approximately 73 Registered Purebred Arabian Studs located from the far North Island, right down to the bottom end of the South Island. The NZ Arab Horse Breeders Society has been handling the registry in New Zealand since 1971, however
the first Arabian horses arrived into the country in the mid to late 1800s. Many of these imports were bound for sheep stations in the South Island. New Zealand currently has approximately 2500 registered Purebred horses and around half that number of registered Derivative Arabians.
