caraVan safety checklist before you leave home for a great touring holiday, run through this checklist to ensure you have a safe and pleasant journey. checkS before the trip n Check oil, water, brake fluid, the battery etc. n Inspect all tyres carefully and remember, when towing heavily loaded trailers your vehicle's tyre pressures should be increased to the level recommended in the owner's handbook or on the tyre placard. If in doubt, contact your local tyre dealer. n Check that your vehicle and trailer's wheel nuts have been tightened to the manufacturer's specifications.

n While you are travelling ensure that the gas cylinders are turned off and that the refrigerator door is closed. n Check that the roll-out awning is stored away and locked in the travel position. n Remove the jockey wheel from its clamp and store it in the boot of the car or RV, or if it is of the swivel mount variety, lock it in the travelling position. n Check that the front and rear corner stabilisers are in the up position.

n Ensure the coupling socket and ball match in size.

n Ensure that the hand brake of the trailer has been correctly released.

n Check that the coupling is correctly and securely fastened.

n Check that the roof hatches, windows and stone shields are secure.

n Check that the safety chains are correctly connected.

n Check that water, sullage and electrical cords have been

For those wanting to stretch their legs, take a relaxing stroll around the tranquil surrounds of Horgan Walk. The 1.8km walking track is situated along Billabong Creek and features the Bush Tucker Trail.

Take a walk along the Murrumbidgee River and through the Narrandera Flora and Fauna Reserve to spot for koalas. A population of over 300 koalas live there.

Bring the Family Discover a hidden world beneath the ground at the Wellington Caves and Phosphate Mine. The world-renowned site features two of the most magnificent show caves – the Cathedral and Garden caves. One of these was Ben Hall, who was amongst Australia’s most notorious bushrangers. Hall was linked with hundreds of robberies during his three year bushranging career in the 1860s. Pick up a driving map to the place where Ben Hall was shot dead by a police party in May 1865. Hall is buried at the Forbes General Cemetery on Churchill Street.

The Parkes area saw its beginnings in 1862 when the discovery of gold led to a hastily erected ‘canvas’ town known as “Currajong”. A further discovery of gold in 1871 at the nearby Bushman’s Gold Mine helped the district to become one of the richest gold producing areas in the colony. In 1873 the then Prime Minister of New South Wales, Sir Henry Parkes, showed his interest in the district by visiting the diggings. On December 1, 1873 the name of the settlement was changed from Bushmans to Parkes in honour of the great statesman. As mining diminished in importance, the plough, the combine and the harvester became the new symbols of progress. Today Parkes is well known for its economic strengths and diversity in the industries of mining (with a large Rio Tinto Gold/Copper Mine located north-west of town), agriculture, tourism, retail and its developing status as a national transport logistics hub. Parkes is an ideal location to stop for a break from your travels with easy access to the many services on offer in town. You will find it relatively easy to find parking (even for long vehicles) within close distance to the retail centre. With Woolworths, Coles, Big W and Target, plus a unique range of specialty stores, banks and essential services – Parkes will be sure to fulfil your travelling needs. BOGAN GATE Located about 30km to the west of Parkes, Bogan Gate is a progressive little village featuring a quaint Pub open daily and a Craft Shop in the old Railway Station which is open weekends and public holidays. Plan your counter lunch at the pub, following a trip to view Utes in the Paddock at Ootha. A great rest stop for the weary traveller is Burrawang Park, where you will find a children’s playground and BBQ facilities.

TRUNDLE Trundle is situated 65km north-west of Parkes. Picture yourself here standing on New South Wales’ widest main street, next to the longest wooden verandah in Australia! This famous verandah belongs to the Heritage Listed Trundle Hotel. The 2-storey hotel was built out of pise mud, rendered with cement and adorned with a 90 metre long wooden verandah. There are no problems with making an angle park in Trundle. Forbes Street lays claim to being one of Australia’s widest main streets, measuring 66 metres (216 ft) across. The annual Trundle

The Peak Hill Tourist Drive from the Visitor Information Centre will guide you to explore treasures such as Australia’s first vertical cement wheat silos (1918) which are still operating today, and the hospital, which is visible on the southern approach to town, built in 1904 and now listed with the National Trust. If you’re looking for a picnic spot, Memorial Park (on the main street adjacent to the Bowling Club) is well maintained with gardens, picnic tables, free BBQ, and toilets; or the picturesque Commercial Gardens in the town centre, with tables and toilets. One dinosaur case features a giant rib of a sauropod dinosaur, similar to those discovered in Queensland over the past couple of years. The gigantic “star” of this collection is the largest fossil fish on display anywhere in Australia. It is called Xiphactinus, and lived during the time of the dinosaurs. This specimen is about 4.5 metres long and we imagine every fishing fanatic travelling the Newell Highway will want to see it close up. Evenings and early mornings are filled with the sounds of cockatoos and galahs while kookaburras at the Golf Club fill the air with merriment. Walking tracks take you around the lakes, as well as back into town, down the Mitchell Highway to Lions Park, or past the golf course on Warren Road. When you arrive in Narromine pop into the Visitor Information Centre at 37 Burroway Street to pick up a brochure and map. Free internet is also available for seniors. toMINGLEY With a population of 50, this quaint village is the southern gateway to the Narromine Shire, and is also adjacent to the entry to Goobang National Park. Goobang National Park offers some fantastic 4WD tracks and scenic bushwalking, set amongst 42,000ha. Camping grounds, basic facilities and picnic areas are also available. Further information can be obtained from the Narromine Visitor Information Centre. If you’re travelling along the Newell Highway, stop and stretch your legs in the peace and quiet of Tomingley before continuing your journey. An all weather road leads right to the 1512 metre summit of the “ecological island”. A wide diversity of flora and fauna can be found along the 11 marked walking tracks and spectacular views await. From the top of the Mt Kaputar lookout one tenth of New South Wales can be viewed on a clear day! The two camping areas offer hot showers gas/ electric barbeques and there are three cabins within the park. Unfortunately caravans cannot travel into the park because of the narrow road. Sawn rockS, Mother Nature’s masterpiece, is located within Mt Kaputar National Park. Sawn

Rocks was formed approximately 21 million years ago (give or take a few thousand years). This very accessible basalt rock formation is just north of Narrabri on the Bingara road. About half an hour’s drive and an easy ten minute walk leads you to Sawn Rocks, where you’d think a stonemason had just knocked off for the day. There is a barbeque and picnic area, and toilets. wee waa The oldest town in the Namoi Valley with distinctive architecture such as the Imperial Hotel and the Court House. Window on the Universe CSIRO’s Australia Telescope Compact Array is the most advanced radio telescope in the southern hemisphere, located 25km west of Narrabri at the Paul Wild Observatory. The instrument detects radio waves from space which are converted to images for interpretation by visiting scientists from around the world. These signals reveal structures and objects in space that are not visible through an optical telescope and help to unlock the secrets of the universe. The Compact Array consists of six 22m dish antennas that work together to simulate a much larger antenna, allowing astronomers to observe very fine details. Five of the antennas sit on a giant railway track 3km long and are often moved to different configurations. The observatory also hosts telescopes for the University of Sydney, the University of Birmingham and a solar observatory of IPS Radio and Space Services. A Visitor Centre is situated on site in pleasant bush surroundings with free gas BBQs, picnic facilities and amenities, but no refreshments are sold. Exhibits provide information about astronomy, the telescope and how the instrument works; including a video presentation, garden sculptures and outdoor interactive displays. The viewing platform provides a great outlook to track where one or more antennas are usually located nearby. The Centre is open each day during daylight hours but normally unstaffed. when you’re travelling along the Newell highway why not take a short drive east and visit Inverell. This great town is located on the banks of the Macintyre River in a picturesque valley on the western edge of the Northern Tablelands. The retail sector of Inverell, framed by avenues of lovely trees, allows the shopper to enjoy wandering along the footpath and soak in the ambience of the main streets. There is a mix of national chains and charming boutique shops and it is a must to call into one of the local eating establishments to enjoy a cuppa and a bite to eat at one of the cafes, restaurants and pubs. Good old country hospitality awaits you. Inverell has many wonderful attractions, from a walk in the national parks/flora and fauna areas, horse riding, fishing, water sports, all types of

outdoor activities and of course fossicking for the beautiful blue Inverell sapphire. There are many displays, exhibitions and demonstrations on show around the Shire. From history at the Pioneer Village, tours through Newstead homestead, vineyards/winery, the olive industry and lovely arts and crafts, there is something for the whole family to enjoy.

Attractions history – national transport museum This museum consists of a growing and ever changing display of all vehicle types and related items. The museum is very proud of the many beautiful vehicles on site which includes popular makes and some rare and exotic creations on display. Take a walk down Inverell’s pioneering past with its authentic buildings, working engines and a fantastic range of memorabilia from around the district. Fabulous displays are housed with the buildings which include the War Museum, Gem & Mineral Display, Photographic and Camera Display, Local Government Museum, Lock Collection which is very unique and so much more. Not to be out done is a fantastic range of steam engines (some working), horse drawn vehicles from

large station wagons to graceful carriages of the gentry from days gone by. See the district’s proud past all located within the Village. newstead homestead tours Visit this historic home, garden and Shearing Shed in a lovely valley east of Inverell. Situated on the banks of the Newstead Creek, the house and garden have many layers of history. Once the home of the Anderson and Bucknell Families, their stories come alive through the interpretation panels created by the NSW History Houses Trust. Although the house is unfurnished, private collections provide information and photos of life on one of the earliest properties. The tour outlines the property from 1838 and also includes a visit to the Shearing Shed immortalised by artist TOM ROBERTS in his painting “The Golden Fleece”.

Fossicking Fossicking is available at several locations, free of charge, where you can try your luck looking for sapphires, zircons, quartz crystals, tin crystals, tourmaline and even diamonds. If you need a little help there are private parks located around the area where they will help you with equipment, advice and demonstrations on how to sieve to get these fabulous gems and minerals. 7 Oaks Fossicking Park & Frazer Creek Sapphires are two great destinations for the fossicker. There are people on hand to show you all about rock hunting and how to go about it

correctly. With everything on site, these private properties are open for you to try your luck. View the local sapphires and other gems at The Gem Centre, Billabong Blue Sapphires, DeJon Sapphire Centre, Inverell Gem & Mineral Shop and all Jewellery Shops in town. A lot of these sites also have a cutter on hand to show you how they start from a rough stone through to the sparkling finished product.

The Great Outdoors There are a number of great parks around where you can either stay the night or spend a pleasant day trekking. Kwiambal National Park lies north west of Inverell 25km from the township of Ashford. The park is located at the junction of the Macintyre and Severn Rivers. This woodland park includes rugged gorge country, waterfalls, walking tracks and Limestone Caves which are home to some rare bats and, of course, limestone formations. All weather gravel roads lead to the lookouts at the Macintyre Falls area and why not stay the night at the Lemon Tree Flat picnic and camping area which has toilets and bbqs right beside the Severn River. Don’t forget to bring all your own supplies for your stay. You can now stay in cottages at the park as well. These are very well appointed and cater from families up to large groups. Bookings can be made at the Tenterfield National Parks Office. Kings Plains National Park to the east of Inverell is a rocky woodland best known for its still pools

and seasonal waterfalls. This is an important conservation area which protects mature old ironbark trees and cypress pines. Camping is available with no facilities. Barayamal National Park is accessed only by foot through the Lake Inverell Reserve. This park has the grassy white box which it protects. This tree was usually the first to be cleared for farming. This area, since been under conservation law, has seen native wildlife flourish and visitors can now appreciate the walking track through the park. Lake Inverell was formed when the Macintyre River was dammed upstream from Inverell to supply water to the town. Since 1983 water has been piped from Copeton Dam, so Lake Inverell is now a beautiful wildlife refuge, recreation area and a very popular birdwatching location. This area has bbqs, toilets, picnic tables and walking tracks which allows for a great day out close to town. Goonoowigall Reserve is located in scenic granite country with low hills and large boulders. The main entrance located just south of town offers a number of picnic areas, toilets and 10km of walking tracks which covers scenic and historic sites. Birdlife is abundant and also present are rock wallabies, swamp wallabies and kangaroos. Pindari Dam is a lovely part of the world north of Inverell and is a boating and fishing haven. Streams running into the dam offer the angler good fishing and a good spot to camp. Solar powered showers, toilets, picnic and bbq areas, and boat ramp are provided.

Copeton Dam Northern Foreshores is just 17km from Inverell with powered sites and plenty of bush camping available with an amenities block located within the park. Good fishing, skiing, birdwatching and maybe a fossick around the dam awaits your next visit. Playground, picnic areas, boat ramp and an onsite Manager is there to assist you. Please note that dogs are not permitted. Copeton State Park is a huge area surrounding the dam of 900 hectares with accommodation, powered sites, amenities scattered throughout the park, bunkhouse, administration centre featuring a well stocked kiosk, laundry, tennis courts, playgrounds, water spray park, golf course, camp kitchen and of course all water activities to be enjoyed.

Arts – Crafts – Antiques – woodturning Inverell has some very talented people which allows for some fantastic works to be displayed and sold. The Inverell Art Gallery allows many of these people to showcase their works in the Gallery and throughout the year they will often have special exhibitions from local and visiting artists. New England Wood Turning is a short drive south to Gilgai. Here you will see a true craftsman at work and take in some of his great creations. Rob is also a very good didgeridoo maker and an accomplished player. There are also a couple of Antique Shops in the area which have some fantastic items from the local area and beyond.

wine – Olives The New England Area is now a recognised wine region and we are very lucky to have several vineyards/wineries within our Shire. The wines are unique due to the cool climate and high altitude and, in fact, a long history of wine production goes back to 1870 when George Wyndham, founder of Wyndham Estate Wines, planted vines just north of Inverell. New England Estate Wines, Gilgai Estate, Zappa Wines & Reedy Creek Vineyard all offer Cellar Door Sales with sampling before buying and Mt. Topper Vineyard is open by appointment. A big variety of both reds and whites are available along with tasty fortified wines and liqueurs. In fact the vineyards grow some rare and exotic grapes to tantalise all tastebuds. Wine and olives go hand in hand and Inverell has many olive groves planted in the hillsides around the district. Olives of Beaulieu allows you to walk through the grove and sample many varieties of oils and olives and learn the benefits of using olive oil products.
