MESSAGE FROM THE MINISTER FOR INNOVATION AND TOURISM INDUSTRY DEVELOPMENT The Hon Kate Jones MP
In the Year of Outback Tourism it is my pleasure to welcome you to Winton for the 25th staging of the Outback Festival. One of Queensland’s quirkiest events, the five days of this event promise plenty of laughs, fun and Queensland hospitality. With everything from sporting challenges to dinner under the stars, and nightly live entertainment. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has named 2019 the Year of Outback Tourism to help grow a sustainable and thriving Outback Queensland tourism industry providing long term support for regional communities and economies, and I thank all visitors to this event for getting behind the Outback. The Queensland Government is also proud to support the Outback Festival through Tourism and Events Queensland’s Destination Events Program which brings visitors to the region and supports local tourism jobs. The event also contributes to the state’s It’s Live! in Queensland events calendar which will generate $800 million for Queensland’s economy in 2019. Congratulations to the event organisers, volunteers, and all of those who are involved in delivering the event. Of course, if you are visiting Outback Queensland for the event, I trust you have allowed time to explore the diverse tourism experiences on offer across the region – from exploring Australia’s history to discovering ancient fossils and enjoying the great company of the many characters of the Outback. The Hon Kate Jones MP Minister for Innovation and Tourism Industry Development 2
G’DAY AND WELCOME TO WINTON CELEBRATING THE 25TH BIENNIAL OUTBACK FESTIVAL
You’re invited to live the outback experience with 5 days of action packed events and entertainment here in Winton, Australia’s dinosaur capital and home of Waltzing Matilda. They say out of adversity comes creativity and that’s exactly what happened when a group of Winton locals back in 1972 came up with the idea for a festival to attract visitors to town following some pretty dire drought conditions. Now billed as one of the world’s quirkiest festivals, visitors come from all over Australia and overseas to join in on the action, experience true outback hospitality and to witness the famous Quilton Australian Dunny Derby. Enjoy! ... and thanks very much for coming. Outback Festival Committee
The 2019 Outback Festival would not be possible without the support, assistance and generosity received from the local business houses, individual sporting bodies, local committees and volunteers. The Outback Festival Committee appreciates the support given by the WORK Camp Winton.
