About PArkes shire Located in Central NSW on the major inland motoring corridor, the Newell Highway, Parkes is a thriving commercial centre offering quality accommodation, unique attractions and events. Parkes is home to the nationally recognised icon, ‘The Dish’ and has become more recently known as the ‘Elvis capital of Australia’ with the annual Parkes Elvis Festival now attracting over 15,000 visitors annually. Parkes caters for all your tourism needs with 13 motels, 7 hotels, 4 bed and breakfasts, 4 caravan parks plus affordable camping and caravan sites at the Parkes Showground. Parkes also caters for recreational vehicles with dump points located throughout the Shire including Parkes, Trundle, Tullamore and Peak Hill.

History The Parkes area remained relatively unsettled until 1862 when the discovery of gold led to a hastily erected ‘canvas’ town known as “Currajong” which accommodated thousands of hopeful gold seekers. A further discovery of gold in 1871 at the nearby Bushman’s Gold Mine helped the district to become one of the richest gold producing areas in the colony. In 1873 the then Prime Minister of New South Wales, Sir Henry Parkes, showed his interest in the district by visiting the diggings. On December 1, 1873, the name of the settlement was changed from

Bushmans to Parkes in honour of the great statesman. Sir Henry Parkes visited Parkes in 1887 and gave the town the Fontana Bust, which is displayed at Parkes Shire Council. In that same year Parkes changed the name of its main street to ‘Clarinda’ - Lady Parkes’ christian name. As mining diminished in importance, the plough, the combine and the harvester became the new symbols of progress.

environment Parkes Shire is located on the western edge of the Great Dividing Range within the Central New South Wales region. The landscape is flat to undulating and forms a part of the catchment for two main river systems, the Bogan and the Lachlan Rivers. Elevation: 339 metres. Shire area: 5,919 sq km.

PoPulation The Parkes town population is currently 11,793, with a further 4,200 residents in the surrounding villages and rural lands. Peak Hill: 1409. Trundle: 876. Tullamore: 525. Bogan Gate: 253. Parkes itself has experienced significant growth during recent years, with further growth expected, underpinned by mining and transport.

agriCulture Parkes Shire contains some of the richest and most productive agricultural and grazing land in New South Wales. Wheat, barley, canola, oats, oilseeds and winter legumes are grown annually. Fields of canola can be seen flowering in magnificent blankets of yellow during late August through to September. Peak Hill was in fact the site of Australia’s first public wheat silo in 1918. Sheep grazing lands are predominant in Parkes Shire, producing significant volumes for both the wool and meat markets.

eConomy Parkes Shire has six key economic strengths: mineral resources, agriculture, retail activity, government services, tourism and transport. Parkes is developing as an important inland hub of Australia’s transport network. Parkes Shire’s mineral resources sustain ongoing mining activity, including Northparkes mines. Coventry – Parkes’ sister City Parkes’ sister city relationship with Coventry in the UK was initiated in 1939 and is the oldest sister city link of any Australian town or city. The link was forged as Coventry was the birthplace of Sir Henry Parkes, in 1815. Parkes was named in honour of the great statesman, changing its name from Bushmans to Parkes in 1873. A replica of Sir Henry Parkes’ birthplace, the moat House Cottage, can be seen when visiting the Henry Parkes Centre, alongside the Parkes Visitor Information Centre. Plans to celebrate Sir Henry’s 200th birthday in 2015 are gaining momentum.

the annuaL ParkeS eLviS feStivaL in 2012, the Countrylink Parkes elvis festival celebrates its 20th anniversary. it may be 20 years since it all began, but the question that everYone still asks is why elvis in Parkes? in 1981 local elvis fans, Bob and anne steel (oam), opened a reception centre and restaurant in Parkes which they named ‘Gracelands’. The building can still be seen today at the corner of Bushman and albert streets, Parkes. The festival concept was first flagged at an elvis themed party in 1992 held at Gracelands for the then editor of the Parkes Champion Post newspaper, roel Ten Cate. This elvis themed party proved the massive appeal of the king across generations and it was over a glass of wine at the party that the idea of a festival was first discussed. Passionate locals from across the community joined forces to stage the first festival in 1993 which included an elvis movie screening, an elvis Tribute Concert by eddie Youngblood, an elvis look-a-like and sound-a-like competition, street Parade and markets, and a Tour of the Parkes region. This first festival was attended by 200 people. in the first 10 years of the festival, more events were added and it continued to attract fans in their hundreds. With the vision and efforts of hard working Committee members, partnered with significant support from Parkes shire Council in 2003/2004, the festival began to explode in popularity and word quickly spread across australia about this fun and quirky event in a country town in nsW, leading to rapid growth of the festival. it’s plain to all who come that the success of this event is due to the incredible respect and enthusiasm people have for elvis and how the Parkes shire community get behind and embrace the event, now attracting over 15,000 visitors annually. for further festival information visit www.parkeselvisfestival.com.au

attractions & actiVities Csiro Parkes radio telesCoPe Star of the movie ‘The Dish,’ (2000), the telescope is one of Australia’s most prominent landmarks and a must-see attraction on every driving holiday through inland New South Wales. As portrayed in the movie, the giant dish stands impressively over surrounding farmlands – a sophisticated piece of scientific equipment ironically in the middle of sheep paddocks! located 20km north of Parkes, The Dish is a short 5km detour off the Newell Highway. You can walk almost right up to it and marvel at the 64 metre steel paraboloid, elegantly balanced atop a three storey concrete tower. Built virtually in the shadow of The Dish, the Visitor Discovery Centre is where visitors are invited to explore the world of astronomy and discover what role The Dish plays in ‘listening to the stars’. The Centre features many displays, as well as hands on exhibits. The Dish Shop features a range of astronomy and space science books, DVDs, science toys and souvenirs. There is a 3D theatre that has recently been upgraded to high definition and runs every half hour. Whilst entry to the Visitor Discovery Centre is free there is a charge to view the 3D theatre. Enjoy a coffee stop or a meal at the award winning Dish Café onsite, or make use of the free BBQ and picnic facilities.

Visitor Information Centre and four unique collections including The King’s Castle Elvis Exhibit, Parkes motor museum, Parkes museum and Antique machinery collection, was completed and opened in December 2010. located on the Newell Highway on the northern side of town, the Henry Parkes Centre is operational 7 days a week. Visitors can purchase a single ‘Henry Parkes Centre’ ticket from the Visitor Information Centre, which will then provide progressive access to the four museums. Admission prices range for adults and children aged 5–18 years with children under 5 years admitted free. There is also a family pass available which includes 2 adults and up to 3 children. Groups of 20 or more will also receive a discounted entry which is advised upon booking.

Henry Parkes Centre

The king’s Castle is a world standard collection of authentic Elvis artefacts. Visitors can view clothes that Elvis actually wore in the movies and on tour, plus items that surrounded Elvis at home, and the gifts he gave to those who were close to him. The collection is owned by Greg Page, renowned for his previous role in the yellow skivvy with hit children’s group The Wiggles. An Elvis fan himself, Greg has been collecting for many years and selected Parkes, the Elvis Capital of Australia, as the perfect location to share his display with the public.

The Parkes motor museum is an impressive display of cars, motorcycles and

other motoring memorabilia never seen before on public display. The items are resourced by the Parkes Antique motor Club along with a feature display of the last Cadillac (1976 Seville) purchased and owned by Elvis Presley, now owned by Greg Page. Visitors can step back in time and view the history of Parkes through a diverse collection of items on display in the henry Parkes museum. Visitors will also enjoy a collection of unique, antique farm machinery and equipment on display in the Pioneer Park museum.

memorial Hill memorial Hill provides the best vantage point for magnificent views over Parkes and the surrounding farmlands. memorial Hill is the most visible landmark in town, with its 35 metre high Shrine of Remembrance standing high over Parkes. The hill offers the opportunity for a leisurely bush walk around the monument surrounds, or a picnic in Rotary Park and adventure playground on the northern side of the hill.

BusHman’s Hill Visit the site of one of Parkes’ first gold mines which operated over 100 years ago. Bushman’s Hill is an enjoyable place to take a walk, with walking tracks to the top of the hill passing by some interesting historical relics. Access the Hill via the Newell Highway near Kelly Reserve, or from Wentworth Street.

Browse through Clarinda Street and its side streets to check out the boutique, gift and variety stores. Big W, Target, Woolworths and Coles can also be accessed via the main street.

Craft Corner If you’re looking for a quality souvenir of your visit to Parkes, Craft Corner features a huge range of locally produced hand-made arts, craft, paintings, pottery, jewellery and knitwear. located in the town centre, Craft Corner is well worth a look and features monthly exhibitions.

BumBerry dam Open to the public for recreational activities including camping, fishing, canoeing and swimming. Head out the Orange Road and turn left onto Bindogundra Road, which is the dirt road opposite the 100 year old Bindogundra church, approximately 13km east of Parkes, then a further 7.5km to Bumberry Dam.

Peak Hill oPen Cut exPerienCe A tourist gold mine located 48km north of Parkes and just 400 metres from the main street of Peak Hill. The site provides a great example of mining techniques used historically and today, with several walking trails, interpretative signage and a viewing platform.

gooBang national Park north-east of Parkes Goobang National Park includes the Hervey, Currumbenya and Bumberry mountain ranges and surrounding valleys. Visitors can enjoy bushwalking, picnicking, photography, bird watching and nature study. Free camping is available in the northern section of the park. goobang national Park Goobang National Park, one of the state’s newest National Parks is located 30km north-east of Parkes. It is approximately 42,600 hectares in size, 55km long and ranges in width from 200 metres to 20km, forming the largest area of remnant vegetation in the Central West of New South Wales. The Park incorporates Hervey, Curumbenya and Bumberry mountain ranges and surrounding country. Travellers on the Newell Highway between Tomingley and Parkes can see the park to the east. Goobang National Park can be accessed via a number of roads, including the Tomingley-Yeoval Road in the north,

the Parkes-manildra Road in the south and from Peak Hill along the Baldry Road. Free camping is available within the park at two sites, Wanda Wandong and Greenbah. New visitor facilities have been installed, featuring amenities (no water or power), interpretative signage and parking bays for recreational vehicles. Visitors are welcome to undertake passive recreation activities such as bushwalking, bird watching and camping. If you plan on horse riding in the park, you’ll need a permit. Goobang National Park provides protection for the diverse range of plant and animal communities found in central west New

South Wales, as well as the rich scenic, cultural and natural features of the area. more than 300 plant species have been recorded in the park, including 40 species of orchids. Brochures are available from the Visitor Information Centres in Peak Hill and Parkes. The park’s main trails are accessible to 2WD vehicles, however they can become very boggy after heavy rain. the parkes Antique motor club was formed in 1974 and has over 80 members who between them, own more than 200 heritage motor cars, cycles and motors. The Club hosts an annual Motorcycle Rally on the October long weekend and a Swap Meet in mid October. The Parkes Motor Museum (part of the Henry Parkes Centre) is resourced by the Club. Each item on display is well described with both technical data and vehicle history provided on easily read sign boards. parkes historical society inc is the owner of two museum collections located at the henry parkes centre. The Henry Parkes Museum (named by Cobden Parkes, Sir Henry’s son in 1969) has in its collection the 1867 plaster bust of Sir Henry and many of his personal items. The Traditional Museum Collection has over 6,000 items from four local estates. The Clock Stand with its many clocks is part of the Collection. Parkes historical archives are also held in the Museum. The Antique Machinery Collection has 4,000 items used by local farmers over the past 100 years, including two rare tractors, the Big Four and the Fowler Reins Drive. There are 45 tractors, stationary engines, steam engines, harvesters, stampers, 5 ton drill and trucks, many of which are started up for special days and group bookings. Peak Hill Open Cut Experience

Peak Hill Peak Hill is a little town with a heart of gold! Located on the Newell Highway, 48km north of Parkes and 70km south of Dubbo, Peak Hill offers travellers an enticing break. Peak Hill’s proud history is indelibly linked with the discovery of gold in 1889. With 3 motels, 1 hotel and 2 caravan parks, Peak Hill offers visitors an affordable alternate stop over to visit The Dish, the Henry Parkes Centre, Goobang National Park or the Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo.

Peak Hill is nestled close to the Hervey Ranges which form an enchanting kaleidoscope of colours to the eastern backdrop of the town. It offers many tourist attractions such as the Peak Hill Open Cut Gold Mine, Flora and Fauna Reserve, Bogan Weir, Big Fish Fossil Hut and Australia’s first upright wheat silo. Peak Hill is rich in arts and crafts resources with all venues situated in the main street (Caswell Street). The Open Cut Gallery, 62 Caswell, has been a popular stop-over for many a traveller. The store offers a full range of hand-made crafts and gifts, and also displays many historical photographs and memorabilia. Within the same venue, Peak Hill Country Crafts opens daily for handcrafted goods, antiques, biscuits, cakes and jams. This is a community-based craft shop which also operates as the town’s visitor information centre, containing an array of brochures and maps of the town’s heritage and tourist drive. Peak Hill’s latest Art Centre, Ninda Gallery, offers both Indigenous

and Australian Artwork. Try some of the town’s finest home cooking at Kezza’s Craft Shop, baked by Peak Hill’s local show champion. The Peak Hill Open Cut Experience is located just 400 metres from the main street of Peak Hill, Caswell Street – this open cut gold mine provides a great example of mining techniques used historically and today. The historic Peak Hill mine operated between 1893 and 1917 producing about 60,000 ounces from 500,000 tonnes of rock. Alkane Exploration re-excavated for gold on the site between 1996 and 2002 retrieving 145,000 ounces of gold from 4.9 million tonnes of rock. While most of the historic operations were consumed by the recent mining activity, some of the old workings have been preserved. The Open Cut Experience includes both the historic works and the more recent mines with several walking trails, interpretative signage and a viewing platform.

On the road to the Golf Club is the Fauna and Flora Reserve, originally one of the many old alluvial workings, a leisurely stroll from the centre of town, providing opportunity to enjoy a variety of birdlife. Rainbow Bee-eaters, Red-rumped Parrots and Zebra Finches are included among the species as are colourful orchids in the cooler months. Like many western centres, Peak Hill has endeavoured to preserve a proud and colourful history. On the southern town approach, the older section of the Peak Hill Hospital dates back to the early 1900s. Typifying the building style of that era, the building has strong architectural appeal and has gained National Trust recognition. Restoration is well underway for The Carrington Hotel which was almost totally destroyed by fire in 1991. It is proposed that the building, once completed, may lend itself to the mining and heritage history of the town. A place where the tourist can stop and partake in the tea room facilities and ‘step back in time’ with heritage items to view. The Bogan Weir, site of Peak Hill’s original water supply, has shady picnic areas and provides pleasant opportunities for bird watching and fishing. An active and diverse sporting centre, Peak Hill boasts excellent recreational facilities with those provided by the Golf Club (with state-wide recognised sand greens), the Bowling Club and Ex-Services Club, especially popular with visitors.

Trundle If you’re looking to capture a classic photo of an Aussie country town, look no further than Trundle. Picture yourself here, standing on New South Wales’ widest main street, next to one of the longest wooden verandahs in Australia!

This famous verandah belongs to the Trundle Hotel, which was built in 1909. The two storey hotel was built out of pise mud, rendered with cement and adorned with a 66 metre long wooden verandah. Today the hotel offers a great spot for a drink, counter meal or accommodation. There are no problems with angle parking in Trundle – Forbes Street is New South Wales’ widest main street, measuring 60 metres across. September is a great month to visit Trundle, timing your visit with a great day of fun at the Trundle Bush Tucker Day. Every year the event dishes up a day of fun for participants and spectators, featuring bush cooking competitions, billy boiling sprint, damper throw, live bands and a whole program of bush entertainment. August is also a busy

time, when the 600-odd Trundle residents and the surrounding community get together to host the Annual Agricultural Show. The nearby Black Range is an ideal spot to go bush walking or bird watching. It offers a peaceful and quiet place to enjoy the picnic ground facilities. Situated 55km north-west of Parkes, Trundle is a rural community with production consisting mostly of wheat, sheep and cattle farming. THE TRUNDLE TREE CHANGE PROJECT The Trundle Tree Change Project is based on the successful ‘rent a farmhouse’ scheme of Cumnock and was implemented to reinvigorate the small community and entice people to relocate to Trundle. By renting vacant farmhouses for $1 a week, the community aims to attract new families to the district to ensure the schools and businesses of Trundle survive. The project is now gaining momentum in Trundle and has attracted widespread interest on a national and international level. Tullamore Irish Festival – held annually each Easter Weekend

Tullamore Tullamore is situated on the Bogan Way, an alternate north south route to the Newell Highway. Tullamore is centrally located to the larger towns of Parkes, Forbes, Condobolin and Narromine.

Sheep and cattle grazing and crop production is the basis of the Tullamore economy. Wheat, barley and oats, oilseeds and winter legumes are grown annually, bringing the town alive during November for harvest. Tullamore Irish Festival – held annually each Easter Weekend

About the tullAmore irish festivAl Nine years ago, Tullamore residents weren’t content to see their community lose population, services and to a certain extent, heart. They decided that by working together to produce a festival, not only would they have a focus but they would attract people to their small town in the Central West and generate camaraderie. Thus was born the Tullamore Irish Festival. The Festival takes place annually on the Easter weekend and is testament to the community for their support and sheer hard work. Since 2004, the Festival has grown from one day of activities to an extensive program which keeps visitors to Tullamore entertained for three days. The main day of the Festival is Saturday, where from 10am to 8pm there is constant entertainment provided firstly through the street parade and then to the Festival Village where the full program gets underway, headed by lively Irish bands, dancers and entertainers. On the other festival days, activities include the Tullamore Irish Festival Art Exhibition, Irish Films, Stations of the Cross, Campfire Concert, local self guided car tours, an ecumenical service and a Hooley on Easter Sunday. Camping is available at the Tullamore Showground. Tullamore folk would love you to join them for one or all of their programmed events to help celebrate their Irish heritage. Bogan gaTe Located approximately 30km to the west of Parkes, Bogan Gate has a population of approximately 200 people. Bogan Gate is derived from the local Aboriginal word meaning “the birthplace of a notable headman of the local tribe”. The village lies on the Sydney – Broken Hill rail line, and it is the junction for the Trundle Tottenham Branch line.

Bogan Gate is a progressive little village with services including a general store/newsagency, takeaway, hotel/motel with postal services, school and police station. Head west from Parkes to Bogan Gate and proceed north to explore the towns of Trundle, Tullamore, Albert and Tottenham before linking with the Mitchell Highway at Trangie or Nyngan. The Bogan Way offers a great route for those looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of the highway and get back to a leisurely way of doing things. These towns have much to offer. Often described as the real New South Wales, they each offer a tapestry of history, nature and diversity in the peace and quiet of the Heart of New South Wales. BOGAN GATE – famous Australian solider Henry Harbord (The Breaker) Morant, who was also a poet, horse-breaker, jackeroo and drover, spent many of his days in the Bogan Gate region and a memorial is now dedicated to him in the town. The Railway Arts & Crafts Centre is well worth a visit on weekends between 10.00am – 4.30pm

TRUNDLE – the heritage-listed Trundle Hotel was built in 1909 in three stages over a three-year period. It is two stories high, built out of pise mud and rendered with cement. ALBERT – much of the country along The Bogan Way has provided inspiration for Australia’s poets, authors and artists. None more so than the inspiration for Eric Jolliffe of Saltbush Bill fame – the Albert Rabbit Trap Hotel. An isolated watering hole, the Rabbit Trap in Albert is a welcome respite for any traveller. TOTTENHAM – is only 32kms from the geographic centre of NSW, which is marked with a cairn north west of the town. Tottenham is within 60kms of the Mitchell Highway at Nevertire or Nyngan, linking to Bourke via the Mitchell Highway and to Cobar via the Barrier Highway.
