The Western Downs region acknowledges the Traditional Owners of the Western Downs; the Barunggam people to the west of Dalby, the Iman (Yiman) people around the Wandoan area, and the Jarowair people around the Bunya Mountains area. The Lockyer Valley region acknowledges the Traditional Custodians, the Ugarapul and Yuggera people. The Southern Downs and Granite Belt region acknowledges the Githabul (& Geynyan) people and the Kambuwal people who also connect with country within the Southern Downs Regional Council area.

The South Burnett region respectfully acknowledges the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the land, the Wakka Wakka people and pay respects to the Elders both past, present and emerging. The Toowoomba region acknowledges the Jagera people, who were of the foothills and escarpment, the Giabal people, who were of the Toowoomba area and the Jarowair people, who were of the northern areas towards and including the Bunya Mountains. The Goondiwindi region recognises the Bigambul people who are the Traditional Owner group.

The Great Bunya Drive is a scenic selfdrive route meandering through 390km of beautiful country landscapes between Toowoomba and Gympie, taking in both the Darling Downs and Kingaroy areas. There are wineries, gourmet cafés, heritage museums, country markets and stunning national parks waiting to be explored. From Brisbane, head to the vibrant city of Toowoomba to begin your journey. Take some time to explore the city – from spectacular views at

Picnic Point to street art murals, hidden laneway cafés and fascinating displays and workshops at Cobb+Co Museum. From Toowoomba, follow the Warrego Way west through Oakey, Jondaryan and Dalby – stop off at the Australian Army Flying Museum at Oakey or the Dalby Pioneer Museum if time permits. Make your way north via Jimbour where you can view the historic heritage-listed Jimbour House; then head onwards through the picturesque country township of Bell.

From Bell, make your way to Bunya Mountains National Park, Queensland’s second oldest national park. This natural wonderland was formed about 30 million years ago and shelters the largest stand of ancient bunya pines in the world today.

Inglewood. Stop at Coolmunda Dam near Inglewood for some bird-watching and enjoy a tea or a drink by the dam. Visit Coolmunda Olives opposite the dam. Also at Inglewood, explore a lavender farm, olive walk and museum. Head towards Goondiwindi on National Route 42 to spend the night at one of the historic pubs. Once you are on Ipswich Road/A7, take the M2/Warrego Highway exit towards Esk/Toowoomba, and head to the Lockyer Valley [92.4km].

Head north towards E Haldon Road and continue on to Mount Sylvia Road for a worthwhile pitstop at the Picnic Point Lookout. [73km]. Explore the sweeping views of the surrounding valley and bushland from 700 metres above sea level, and tour the parklands and waterfall.

Start the drive on the New England Highway towards the South Burnett region [72km]. Enjoy a bite and a coldie at the historic Maidenwell Pub in the quaint village of Maidenwell. Travel another 3km to Coomba Falls for the natural waterhole surrounded by granite boulders.

Take the Warrego Highway/A2 on to Seventeen Mile Road to explore the surrounding high country and visit Ravensbourne National Park [48km].

Once you are on the Chinchilla Wondai Road/State Route 82, take the Mundubbera Durong Road/State Route 75 for the next stop — Lake Boondooma [168km].

Take the Esk Hampton Road/State Route 85 and on to New England Highway/A3 to reach and explore Crows Nest National Park [34km].

Relax waterside by Lake Boondooma and try your luck at fishing from your camp onsite. Look out for kangaroos and wild horses that call this spot home.

Take the Mount Sylvia Road and then take a slight left onto E Haldon Road to enjoy the panoramic mountain views and country roads to finally reach the Glen Rock State Forest [50km]. Hike the ‘Christies Loop’ walking trail [5km return] to see Glen Rock, the red volcanic outcrop.

Journey south to the Western Downs on the Mundubbera Durong Road/State Route 75 and then take the Chinchilla Wondai Road/State Route 82 [132km].

Steer through country fields on the Leichhardt Highway/A5 and towards Goondiwindi [192 km].

Take the Texas Yelarbon Road and on to Mingoola Road/State Route 89 to follow the dirt tracks through Sundown National Park and see Red Rock Gorge (for experienced 4WD travellers) [113km]. Tour a local vineyard or visit a cellar door to pick up your favourite vintage.

Travel through rainforest canopies and ancient bunya pines to reach Bunya Mountains National Park. Soak up the panoramic mountain views from 1,100 m above sea level and follow the walking trails to explore nine different types of rainforest, native wildlife and birdlife. Take the Bunya Highway/State Route 49 through Western Downs and visit Lake Broadwater and Caliguel Lagoon [additional distance to cover – approx. 280km].

Grab a bite in Goondiwindi and explore the art and shops of the town, then just 400m from the main street, stroll along the river walk, where the 3km riverbank hugs the New South Wales border. From Goondiwindi take the Kildonan Road (which is a designated Tourist Drive) to travel to Yelarbon [approx. 55km] to see the silos, which have their own viewing area. Explore the onsite museum and machinery yard. Have dinner at the Oasis Hotel after stretching your legs at the Yelarbon Lagoon. [1.2km].

Start driving on the Bruxner Highway and on to New England Highway/A15 to the final destination, Girraween National Park [90km]. Look around for intriguing balancing boulders and abundant birdlife. Explore gentle or more adventurous bushwalks passing open fields of grazing kangaroos, waterfalls and rock pools. A popular attraction for Granite Belt visitors, this park is located just on the New South Wales side of the NSW/QLD border. Bald Rock is the largest of a series of granite domes in this 8,000ha national park where you can explore granite canyons, stone arches and echo points.

Visit the largest state forest in the Southern Hemisphere and enjoy outstanding wildflower displays during late winter or spring. Explore Barakula State Forest and see many of the area’s key landmarks. Campers must be fully self-sufficient.

DON’T MISS: Take a trail to Bald Rock or Little Bald Rock and be rewarded with views into Girraween National Park. Enjoy a shady picnic, spot wildlife and see many different species of birds.

DON’T MISS: From Chinchilla, travel 45km on Auburn Road and follow signage. As this is a working forest, beware of trucks.

GETTING THERE: From Stanthorpe take the sealed road east across the state border to Amosfield, run south on the Mount Lindsay Road towards Tenterfield and turn right into the 6km Bald Rock National Park access road – about 40km. A vehicle day pass is required and camping fees apply.

The final 16km to camping areas is via winding gravel roads. The camping area is 20km from Blackbutt along the forest drive. Watch out for logging trucks.

Boat Mountain Conservation Park (South Burnett)

In this small park, discover a distinctive flat-topped ridge, shaped like an upturned boat, clad in dry rainforest and open eucalypt woodland. Take short walks to lookouts for views over the surrounding countryside, go bird-watching and spot wildlife such as black-striped wallabies and echidnas by day or pygmy-possums and sugar gliders at night. Camping is not allowed in the park. GETTING THERE: About 12km north of Murgon.

Bunya Mountains National Park (South Burnett)

Here you’ll discover what is thought to be the world’s largest remaining stand of bunya pine forest protected in Queensland’s second oldest national park. Find out about the park’s strong cultural connections – Aboriginal people gathered here from afar during bunya nut season for bunya festivals until the late 1800s. Relax at one of the camping areas where it’s blissfully cool in summer and a misty wonderland in winter. Accommodation and cafés are located nearby. DON’T MISS: Enjoy walks (ranging from 500m to 12km in length) through bunya pine forest, eucalypt forest and rainforest. Discover mountain scenery and grassy ‘balds’ and have fun spotting an incredible variety of birds. GETTING THERE: The Bunya Mountains is 55km north-east of Dalby or 56km south-west of Kingaroy. The drive from Brisbane takes around 3hrs. The access routes to the park are steep and winding, and are not suited to caravans or trailers.

Crows Nest National Park (Toowoomba and the Darling Downs)

Discover spectacular creek scenery, granite outcrops, a scenic waterfall and eucalypt forest remnants on the edge of the Great Dividing Range. DON’T MISS: Follow the creek to the Cascades and Crows Nest Falls, then enjoy spectacular views over the Valley of Diamonds from Koonin Lookout. Cool off in Bottlebrush Pool. Watch for vulnerable brush-tailed rock wallabies, small forest birds and cliff-nesting peregrine falcons. GETTING THERE: The park is located 55km north of Toowoomba via the New England Highway or 55km west of Esk via the Esk-Hampton Road.

GETTING THERE: To get to Glen Rock State Forest head to the intersection of Gatton-Toowoomba Road and Mount Sylvia Road on the western edge of Gatton. Take Mount Sylvia Road south through Tenthill and then continue south to Junction View. At Junction View State Primary School veer left and follow East Haldon Road to Glen Rock State Forest.

(Southern Downs and Granite Belt)

Lake Broadwater Conservation Park (Western Downs) Be delighted by the sheer size of huge granite boulders towering above open forests, contrasting with the delicate spring wildflowers that splash colour across the landscape in spring. DON’T MISS: From the Castle Rock and Bald Rock Creek camping areas, explore some of the 17km of walking tracks. Climb the First Pyramid to see Balancing Rock and for great views over the park. Watch for blue wrens, yellow-tufted honey eaters, bearded dragons and perhaps a common wombat. Superb lyrebirds live here but are rarely seen. GETTING THERE: Located 35km south of Stanthorpe via the New England Highway, Girraween is one of Queensland’s most loved national parks.

Glen Rock State Forest

Relax and appreciate nature in this park featuring a semi-permanent lake surrounded by cypress pine, eucalypt and brigalow open woodland. An important refuge for waterbirds and other wildlife, the lake is popular for bird-watching, picnicking and boating. MUST-DOS: Walk along the lake’s shore, bird-watch from the hide or picnic under a shady red gum beside the lake. Set up camp beside the lake. You need a permit to take your boat on the water – contact Lake Broadwater caretakers on (07) 4663 3562. GETTING THERE: Turn off the Moonie Highway 20km south-west of Dalby and drive a further 10km to the park.

(Lockyer Valley — 42km south of Gatton)

Lockyer National Park (Lockyer Valley) Glen Rock State Forest is situated at the head of Tenthill Valley and adjoins the World Heritage-listed Main Range National Park.

This largely undeveloped park features remote sandstone gorges surrounded by remnant eucalypt forest.

From Gatton, travel 11km north along Gatton–Esk Road then turn left onto Millers Road to enter the park. From Helidon, travel 14km north on Seventeen Mile Road, then turn right onto Wallers Road to enter the park. GOOD TO KNOW: In dry weather only, 4WD vehicles are permitted on Wallers Road from Seventeen Mile Road through to Forestry Road; from Millers Road through to Logans Road; and from Krugers Road through to Millers Road/ Redbank Creek Road. Conventional, twowheel-drive (2WD) vehicles can access Seventeen Mile Road only.

Main Range National Park – Cunninghams Gap (Southern Downs)

GETTING THERE: The park is located 97km from Toowoomba or 54km from Warwick. The last 6km is unsealed and may be closed after heavy rain.

Main Range National Park – Queen Mary Falls (Southern Downs)

Enjoy the spectacle of Spring Creek plunging 40m over a sheer rock face at Queen Mary Falls – a popular picnic destination. There is a private camping/ caravan park located nearby. Explore a short walk leading to lookouts overlooking the breath-taking falls, or take the 2km track down to the floor of the gorge. GETTING THERE: To access the park, take the Falls Drive tourist route – a steep but sealed approach from Boonah along the Boonah-Killarney Road. A more accessible route is via Killarney, about 40km south-east of Warwick, 11km along the Killarney-Boonah Road.

Be impressed by rugged peaks, towering forests and spectacular mountain scenery on even the briefest of visits to Cunninghams Gap – the best known section of this World Heritage-listed park.

Main Range National Park – Spicers Gap

DON’T MISS: Explore some of the easy walking tracks, ranging from 1.6km to 12.4km in length, which pass through rainforest, open eucalypt forest and heath, and offer spectacular views.

Discover evidence of pioneer travel routes over the Great Dividing Range and enjoy views of the Fassifern Valley at historic Spicers Gap.

GETTING THERE: The Cunningham Highway passes through Main Range National Park at Cunninghams Gap, about 116km south-west of Brisbane and 50km east of Warwick.

Main Range National Park – Goomburra (Southern Downs)

DON’T MISS: Follow the trail of old bullock days and look for signs of the paved road built in the mid-1800s. Picnic near the site of a long-gone inn and pioneer graveyard, and enjoy the view from Governor’s Chair Lookout. GETTING THERE: Take the Spicers Gap turnoff from the Cunningham Highway, 5km west of Aratula. The last 5km of Spicers Gap Road is unsealed and steep in places.

Mount Basalt Reserve (Toowoomba and the Darling Downs) At Goomburra, nestled in the western foothills of the Great Dividing Range, take advantage of creek-side campsites, picnic spots and walks. From the top of the range, enjoy views over the Fassifern Valley towards the Border Ranges in the south and across Mount Castle in the north. MUST-DOS: Explore walking tracks ranging from short easy circuits to longer tracks (5-12km), showcasing woodland and rainforest, creeks and waterfalls, and scenic lookouts. Watch for echidnas and koalas, satin bowerbirds and yellow-tailed black cockatoos. 20

SOUTHERN QUEENSLAND COUNTRY

Discover striking volcanic formations and a walking track through 10ha of scrub. MUST-DOS: Follow the track to two rocky peaks past geological features and farmland views. GETTING THERE: From Toowoomba, take the Gore Highway to Millmerran, then drive 18km south on the Kooroongarra Road to the reserve.

Ravensbourne National Park (Toowoomba and the Darling Downs)

See majestic Sydney blue gums, staghorns, elkhorns and twining rainforest vines. DON’T MISS: Explore four short tracks including a self-guided walk from Cedar Block picnic area or take in panoramic views from Gus Beutel lookout. Watch for the regent bowerbird and wompoo pigeons, and listen out for cat birds, noisy pittas and paradise riflebirds. GETTING THERE: The park turnoff is 14km east of Hampton or 33km west of Esk on the Hampton-Esk Road. From Toowoomba, drive north towards Crows Nest on the New England Highway. At Hampton, head east towards Esk for 14km to the park entrance.

Sundown National Park (Granite Belt)

On the QLD/NSW border, experience the rugged wilderness of Sundown National Park, featuring spectacular steep-sided gorges, sharp ridges and peaks rising to more than 1,000m. DON’T MISS: Camp at defined camping areas or hike into a bush camp. From the Broadwater camping area at the park’s southern end, stroll the 1km graded walk to Permanent Waterhole or, if you’re experienced, explore the Severn River. GETTING THERE: The Broadwater camping area is 76km south-west of Stanthorpe or 64km west of Wallangarra. Burrows Waterhole camping area is 36km west of Ballandean, the trip to the site includes 20km of rough 4WD track.

Yarraman State Forest (Toowoomba and the Darling Downs)

See hoop pines growing in impressive plantations or emerging above subtropical rainforest and prickly vine forests on the broad hills above Yarraman. Listen for golden whistlers, green cat birds and paradise riflebirds. Picnic at shady Rogers Park, a short drive into the forest. Dogs are permitted on a leash. GETTING THERE: Turn off the D’Aguilar Highway 1.5km north-west of Yarraman. The 1.4km access road to Rogers Park is unsealed. Beware of logging trucks.

Water sports, fishing, bird-watching, hiking, perfect sunrises and sunsets, camping and cabins. With an active fish restocking program the dam is popular for Murray Cod and Perch species fishing. GIL WEIR, MILES

LAKE BARAMBAH, MOFFATDALE

Also known as Bjelke-Petersen Dam, Lake Barambah is owned and managed by Sunwater and South Burnett Regional Council. Boating is permitted as are swimming, kayaking and sailing. Fishing is permitted away from the dam wall and a permit is required. Camping is available at the privately owned campsite.

LAKE BOONDOOMA , PROSTON

Lake Boondooma is a drawcard for anglers, campers, bird-watchers and water-sports enthusiasts. The dam was purpose-built in 1983 to provide a water supply to the Tarong Power Station. Bring the caravan, tent or treat yourself to a comfortable cabin and launch your boat on the stable, maintained boat ramp.

Lake Dyer offers a number of water activities in addition to fishing. Canoeing, motorised boats, sail boats and jet skis are all permitted on the lake. Bring a picnic and enjoy the shaded tables, children’s playground and free BBQs. Gates open from 6am to 6pm.

Facilities include a boat ramp, picnic area with toilets, boat hire and boat fuel. Permits and bait are available onsite. Camping is available at the Washpool Reserve and Lake Leslie Tourist Park.

Goondiwindi Water Park If you’re towing a boat then The Goondiwindi Water Park, located on Johnston Road is a premier water sports location. Users of the space are encouraged to take advantage of the many facilities including the playground, toilets, hot showers and BBQ/picnic areas at the park. There are also numerous walking paths for the nature enthusiast. The water park is a nationally credited water ski site. Please check with Goondiwindi Regional Council about water levels during periods of drought.

For those that love driving “soft 4WD” there are seven 4WD trails to choose from. The trails are on public roads, mostly gravel or formed earth. Some are in poor condition. A high clearance vehicle or 4WD is recommended. All the trails start from the Hampton Visitor Information Centre and each trail is about 2 hours in duration.

Some of the region’s best four wheel driving is in this high, remote and rough wilderness. Good clearance and low range is essential in this rocky terrain which entices self-sufficient campers and experienced 4WD’ers.

Take it Outdoors Our region is packed with artwork to explore outdoors – from the side of buildings in our town’s main streets to water tanks and disused silos and water towers standing over 30-metres-tall. SILO MURALS With two painted silo artworks, three painted water tanks, and nearly 100 murals to discover, follow this guide to explore our region’s best outdoor artwork. A must-see is the silo mural at Yelarbon, Queensland’s largest mural silo artwork with an 1,800m2 painting across eight silos.

Laneway Art Trails If you’re a lover of art, take a step outside the galleries and experience Toowoomba’s emergence into street art. February 2014 saw local and world-class artists put paint to walls at sixteen locations over three days in the First Coat Street Art Festival, the art of which can still be seen today. Spend a few hours wandering around Toowoomba’s streets and lanes exploring cafés, classic architecture and one of Australia’s largest outdoor street art galleries.

GIRRAWEEN NATIONAL PARK AND BALD ROCK

A flat-topped mesa occupying 210ha one kilometre to the east of the township of Allora on the Southern Downs. Access is from the New England Highway via Burges Road. A wooden post and rail entrance with appropriate signage leads up to a picnic area. Well-defined paths lead from there to the top of the mountain.

From Bald Rock picnic area, follow the Border Link trail to the base of Bald Rock, where you’ll pass through eucalyptus, mountain gum and New England blackbutt. The trail leads to the NSW-Queensland border, and there are tremendous views of Girraween National Park along the way.

BUNYA MOUNTAIN S

CHINCHILLA BOTANIC PARKLAND

A spectacular wilderness range forming an isolated section of the Great Dividing Range situated about 150km from the coast and lying almost centrally between Kingaroy and Dalby. The immense subtropical range of cool, green rainforest, eucalypt forests and woodlands is home to the world’s largest forest of bunya pines. Dome shaped bunya pines graciously raise their majestic heads above the forest canopy crowning a magnificent green splendour. High altitude grasslands include rare grasses of international interest.

There is plenty of room to move here. Spanning 4.2ha Chinchilla Botanic Parkland has earned the top gong of QLD Parks and Leisure Australia 2020. Showcasing beautiful native trees, scrubs and a plethora of birdlife brings this park to life. Pack a picnic and enjoy.

CUNNINGHAM S GAP, MAIN RANGE NATIONAL PARK

A landscape of rugged mountains, spectacular lookouts, exhilarating walks, dappled forests and unique wildlife is waiting to be explored. Discover walks through lush tropical rainforest, fragrant eucalypts and colourful montane heath. Rock-hop across pristine mountain streams and pause at cascading waterfalls. Visit sites and relics that hark back to harsh pioneering days. Take in the views of ancient peaks, dramatic escarpments and forest-cloaked slopes and valleys. GOONDIWINDI BOTANIC GARDEN S

A great walking, picnic and bird-watching spot next to the water’s edge, set amongst the local native flora of the 25ha Botanic Gardens. The gardens have two hectares landscaped specifically for public recreation, with BBQ and playground facilities, shelter sheds, toilet amenities, all weather gravel roads and ample car parking.

LOCKYER VALLEY BIRDLIFE

Of the 850 bird species in Australia, more than 300 species have been recorded in the Lockyer Valley’s diverse and easily accessible habitats which encompass wetlands, agricultural land, national parks and state forests. Many species found in the Lockyer Valley are migratory, so the birds you may see are continually changing. Some of Lockyer Valley’s most popular spots to find bird life include: Lake Clarendon, Lake Galletly and Lake Lenore at the University of Queensland campus, Lake Dyer, Glen Rock State Forest, Lake Apex and Lake Freeman. LOCKYER VALLEY NATIONAL PARK

Home to the vulnerable and nearthreatened species Helidon ironbark, mountain guinea flower, brush-tailed rock wallaby and black-breasted button-quail. Don’t miss exploring Gormans Gap and Mount Campbell, Flagstone Environmental Park, White Mountain State Forest and the spring wildflower laden Helidon Hills. QUEEN MARY FALLS, MAIN RANGE NATIONAL PARK

A landscape of rugged mountains, fragrant eucalyptus forest, spectacular lookouts, exhilarating walks and unique wildlife surrounds these waterfalls where Spring Creek tumbles 40m to the valley below. This park is part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area, famed for its ongoing geological processes, evolutionary history, and diversity (especially of rare, threatened and endemic species).

SUNFLOWERS ON THE DOWN S

Bright yellow flowers can be seen across the agricultural farms of the Darling Downs and Southern Downs during summer. This crop with its large head of black seeds and surrounding yellow petals is normally blooming from December to March, dependent on rain. The crops are on private farming land, so it’s best to check with each regional council for exact locations before you visit.

The region is home to the State’s only two GI (Geographical Indication) wine zones; the Granite Belt and the South Burnett area. Grapes have been grown in the Granite Belt area since the 1870s and today their wineries are the most awarded in Queensland. The more well known grape varietals such as Chardonnay, Verdehlo and Semillon (white) and Shiraz, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon (Red) are proven in the Granite Belt, however it’s the more adventurous style of wine that is getting attention. The Strange Bird Wine Trail allows for sampling of unique varieties such as viognier, mourvedre and tempranillo.

Channel 40 is used by highway vehicles and trucks (firmly established by tradition). Channel 18 is used by caravans and campers (by courteous agreement). Channel 10 is for 4WDers which is becoming more popular and is recommended officially in national parks (by courteous agreement). Channel 5 is for emergency repeaters (allocated in law). For locations please ask for a repeater list.

For other regions, scanning all channels is a far more effective way of locating other UHF users in an emergency. General use channels are therefore 9 12 17 19 to 21 24 to 30 and 39. Channels 5 and 35 are reserved for emergency use only. Strict penalties for misuse apply. WEATHER UPDATES
