IMAGINE – no traffic, no hustle, no stress. Welcome to the Walgett Region – with lung filling fresh air, vast open spaces and a starry night sky that will mesmerise you for hours. Walgett Shire encompasses 22,336km2 of our beautiful country, an area blessed by a diverse landscape and natural wonders.

A lazy 9-hour overland adventure from Sydney and Canberra and almost as far from Brisbane, the northern edge of Walgett Shire rests humbly against the Queensland border, about 600km from the east coast, as the crow flies.

Dissected by the Kamilaroi Highway, many combine a visit with an adventure along the famous Darling River Run. Others seek the healing properties of the mineralised artesian springs dotted throughout the region, to soothe body aches and recharge the soul. And then of course, there’s those who come seeking the riches that lay deep within the earth on which our captivating community lies.

However long your journey, whatever your reason for coming, we encourage you to use the trip to adjust your pace, so upon arrival you can move in time with our friendly locals and soak up everything on offer.

BURREN JUNCTION

An hour’s drive east of Walgett you will find Burren Junction – the name ‘Burren’ is said to be a Gamilaraay word meaning ‘boomerang’. With a handful of streets home to a couple of churches, a school, post office and pub, it’s a small and welcoming stop along the Kamilaroi Highway.

Like nearby Walgett and Lightning Ridge, tourists are drawn to Burren Junction to soak in the hot therapeutic water that bubbles up from the Great Artesian Basin deep below. The Burren Junction Bore Baths, open seasonally, is the perfect spot for visitors and locals to mingle. Pull up the van or pitch a tent at the RV Friendly campground next door and take advantage of the powered amenities block and wood fuelled BBQs.

If you’re after a powered site or a self-contained cabin, pop down to the Junction City Hotel. The hotel is a great place to refuel, with diesel for the car and meals for you and your crew. Both are served with a big dose of country hospitality. While often quiet, the pub’s atmosphere builds during the cottonpicking season from April to June, and from September to December when the local wheat harvest is underway. In the evenings, you will find hard-working harvesters occupying every corner of this humble country pub, washing away the toils of the day with ice cold beer and friendly banter.

CARINDA

Carinda is famed as being the location of David Bowie’s single ‘Let’s Dance’, with tourists travelling to the small outback town to re-enact scenes from the 1983 music video. Locals have embraced the connection and leverage the attention by hosting an annual ‘Let’s Dance Carinda’ festival.

The influx of visitors during the October long weekend festival is warmly welcomed by the local business owners. These include the Carinda Hotel and a fuel station, post office and the beloved Far West Store which offers coffee, light meals and loads of locally made treasures.

COLLARENEBRI

Collarenebri is a native word of the Gamilaraay people meaning place of flowers or eucalyptus blossoms.

Collarenebri, perched on the edge of the Barwon River, is an easy 50-minute drive north-east of Walgett along the Gwydir Highway. Colly, as the town is affectionally known (and because it’s much easier to pronounce), is renowned as one of the best inland fishing locations in NSW and home to the Murray Cod! The RV Friendly campground, with amenities and potable water, is the ideal location to kick back for a couple of days and practise your casting, right from your riverside site.

Don’t fear if the big one ‘gets away’, just down the road the Tattersalls Hotel sells meals and cold beer to soothe one’s disappointment.

With its plentiful waterways, residents and visitors enjoy water skiing and camping along the river.

Annual events such as the Colly Mud Trials, the Spring Race Meeting and the infamous Colly Cod Classic draw hundreds of people to the town.

COME BY CHANCE

Named after a nearby historic Sheep Station, Come by Chance never fails to feature on lists of unusual place names. A 40-minute drive south-east of Walgett, the small community mostly serves a quiet existence – except when the Come by Chance Picnic Races are held.

In the lead up to the annual event, the tiny settlement buzzes with excitement, anticipation building and finally releasing with a whole town celebration.

CUMBORAH

The name Cumborah is an English translation of ‘sweet water’ with small springs bubbling up out of the sandstone. Cumborah is Yuwaalaraay Country and home to the Ngunga Burra People of the Kurrajong.

Surrounded by Mulga and Cypress scrubland, Cumborah is famous for its beautiful gravels, fossilised wood and agate.

Cumborah offers free camping and access to the Narran Lake Nature Reserve and is a mere 15km from the infamous Pubs In the Scrub of Grawin, Glengarry and the Sheepyard Opal Fields. Make Kigwigil Country Escape Farmstay your home for the night. Only 45km from Walgett, ‘Kigwigil’ is an authentic outback experience that shows guests what life is truly like on the land.

GRAWIN

The Grawin Opal Field was established in 1908 after the discovery of opal at Hammond Hill. It was several years later before the ‘The Light of the World’, an opal weighing almost half a kilo, was discovered at Richards Hill, and put the opal field on the map.

Since then, there have been several opal rushes, each causing the population in this isolated settlement to swell with optimistic prospectors. The town services have grown to cater to the influxes, and now play host to a general store, airstrip, club and a golf course with rocky fairways and oiled sand greens.

The Grawin Club in the Scrub was built by volunteers in the mid-1970s in protest after another local pub increased the price of beer. The club quickly became the social hub of the area, offering a range of activities, sporting events, raffles, entertainment and community events. The club serves lunch daily and dinner from Wednesday to Friday, with a different menu each night.

Just down the road is Marg’s Carvings, offering small hand carved figurines, ornaments, earrings and pendants made from local stones. Marg will carve custom items for visitors; from stones they find during their opal adventures.

GLENGARRY

Opal was discovered in Glengarry in the early 1900s, however, it wasn’t until the 1970s that Glengarry became popular enough to be considered a major opal field. And we all know what every popular outback location needs, right? You guessed it, their own outback pub.

To satisfy this need, the Glengarry Hilton was built smack bang in the heart of the opal fields. The Hilton is a slice of Aussie folklore. Cold beer, great grub and friendly folk. The Hilton wouldn’t be a Hilton without accommodation. Offering backpacker style, airconditioned accommodation with communal flush toilets, hot showers and a washing machine, the Glengarry Hilton doesn’t disappoint.

Sweeney’s Arts and Crafts was given to the residents of the Opal Fields as a place to sell their huge variety of arts and crafts, all handmade. The opals are the attraction of life on these fields and is an everyday conversation.

SHEEPYARD

The Sheepyard Inn is the third and final pub in the scrub tour. On the drive from Glengarry to Sheepyard, resting humbly amongst the miners’ shanties and caravans, beside dusty mullock heaps is the Sheepyard Community War Memorial Lake Beard. Built by miners, many of whom were Vietnam war veterans, the memorial has become the ANZAC Day commemorative meeting place for hundreds each year.

The nearby Sheepyard Inn is quirky with its pink train carriage, comedic with its Bra Tree and completely offbeat with a Jaw-Dropping Junkyard. The Inn sells groceries, souvenirs, fuel, meals and of course, cold beer. There’s a free camp out the back with shower and toilets so why not set up camp and stay for a night or two!

ROWENA

Rowena was once a stop along the Pokataroo Railway Line, distinguishable by a wheat stack and hotel. Today, while trains carrying wheat and cotton still pass through town, the station is closed and all trading is done through the Rowena Pub.

The pub, a licensed premises and shop, is a favourite stop for passers-by, with a campground and a handful of rooms. Kids love burning off some energy on the small backyard playground, while mum and dad cosy up by the fire pit when the weather turns cool. Once a year, the community congregates for the Rowena Cracker Night, a fun event for the whole family which draws over a thousand people from far and wide.

FIFTY CLICKS SOUTH OF LIGHTNING RIDGE LIES WALGETT, NESTLED NEAR TO WHERE THE NAMOI AND BARWON RIVERS MEET. THE TOWN’S ONLY ROUNDABOUT MARKS THE JUNCTION OF THE KAMILAROI AND CASTLEREAGH HIGHWAYS, FUNNELLING AVID OUTBACK ADVENTURERS THROUGH TOWN AND OFF ON SOME OF AUSTRALIA’S BEST OUTBACK TOURING ROUTES.

CONSIDERED THE GATEWAY TO the nearby opal fields, Walgett offers small-town surprises, rewards for those willing to spend time getting to know the locals and their patch of bush paradise. Ask any shop owner how the yellow belly are biting, and they will probably tee up a time to meet you on the riverbank after knock-off.

If fishing is not your game, take a stroll along the 1.5km Norman Tracker Walford Walkway which hugs the Namoi River, a tribute to the Aboriginal tracker, Norman Walford. Or pop out to the Walgett Water Tower and marvel at the mural that celebrates the life of local Aboriginal country music legend Jimmy Little. Recharge at the Walgett Bore Baths, or refuel at Stone’s Throw Cafe, a coffee-come-gift store selling homewares alongside lattes and long blacks.

Time to spare? Drop by the Visitor Information Centre for a local spin on what to do in the area and beyond. Pick up a map and a souvenir or two. The Centre acts as a local artisan’s showcase, offering postcards, art, woodwork and opal jewellery.

LIGHTNING RIDGE

LIKE THE RARE BLACK OPALS THAT HIDE DEEP WITHIN THE REGION’S DUSTY BROWN FOUNDATION, LIGHTNING RIDGE IS BURSTING WITH COLOURFUL HIGHLIGHTS – AND HUMANS SURE TO REWARD THE INQUISITIVE TRAVELLER.

Lightning Ridge is the only place in the world where Black Opal is found; it’s recognised as NSW’s official gemstone.

‘THE RIDGE,’ AS IT’S affectionately known by locals, is a mere 65km south of the Queensland border, about 50 minutes north of Walgett. Boasting the widest range of accommodation in the region, visitors are spoilt for choice with caravan parks, motels, bed & breakfasts, farm stays and even a castle!

Activate your senses with an early morning dip in the mineral-rich waters of the artesian baths. Get to know the lay of the land on one of five self-guided Car Door Tours that link explorers with outback adventures.

Keep the adventure alive with some of our quirkiest attractions. Like a house built using thousands of bottles, and another made with cans. Discover Amigo’s Castle and don’t miss the Chambers of The Black Hand, where subterranean tunnels open into expansive chambers. Don’t leave town before digging for your very own opal treasure in the fossicking mounds at the Opal Mine Adventure.

Wind down at the end of the day with a drink and a parmy at the local pub. Strike up a conversation with our welcoming townsfolk, you just might discover other enticements to add to your must-see list – we’ve barely scraped the top off the mullock heap. Like capturing a sunset at Nettleton’s First Shaft, brushing up on (not against) cacti knowledge, or snapping a pic with Stanley the 18-metre-tall Emu.

AUSTRALIAN OPAL CENTRE

In the late 1990s, community members led a tourism, education and research targeted project designed to leverage the growing attention of the black opal, to diversify the local economy which was heavily dependent on opal mining and agriculture.

The resulting Australian Opal Centre operates from multiple locations in Lightning Ridge, including a showroom on Morilla Street and the Black Opal Heritage Shed at the Three Mile Opal Field. Across its locations, visitors can view public exhibitions including the world’s premier collection of rare opalised fossils and opal related publications, participate in fossil digs and events, and purchase opal related merchandise.

The showroom houses the plans for the new Australian Opal Centre at Three Mile Opal Field, an energy efficient, twostorey underground museum designed by acclaimed architects.

BOTTLE HOUSE MUSEUM

Made from almost six thousand bottles, this small museum is bursting with paraphernalia. Shelves are loaded with tea pots, kettles, cups, vases, tins and artwork. The floor and tables are home to tools, iron kettles and vintage wares. Items date back to the early 1900s, coated with a fitting layer of dust. The dark glass bottled walls cast a tinged light throughout the small cottage, interrupted by bright light streaming through randomly arranged clear bottle windows. The matching dog kennel outside the small shop adds to the charm of this unusual attraction.

CHAMBERS OF THE BLACK HAND

Every visit promises a new experience at Chambers of the Black Hand, where subterranean tunnels open into expansive chambers. The carving level, located eleven metres underground, reveals incredible sculptures and hand carvings crafted with a jackhammer, a pickaxe and everyday kitchen utensils. Discover a wall adorned with sculptures

of Australian Prime Ministers, and a room where jungle animals lurk. There are terracotta warriors guarding family favourites like Shrek, Puss in Boots and Donkey. Jack Sparrow makes an appearance, along with archangels, budda statues and a tribute to Tutankhamen.

COOPER’S COTTAGE

Pieced together by materials foraged from the area, Cooper’s Cottage, built in 1916 is an authentic example of dwellings constructed by miners across the opal fields. The cottage highlights the harsh conditions endured, dirt floor, minimal furniture, no running water or electricity and limited air circulation. A great peek into a life once lived.

BEVAN’S BLACK OPAL & CACTUS GARDEN

Stop in and say hi to John, the only black opal mining cactus farmer in the world. He’ll share with you his passion for the prickly plants while you wander around the largest display of old and rare cacti in the southern hemisphere.

Grown from seeds collected from around the world, many plants are now well over 100 years old, with the oldest being nearly 150.

JUST RUSTIC

Just Rustic showcases a vast assortment of historical tools, memorabilia, artefacts, Indigenous artwork, and machinery, dating back to the early 1900s. The collection is housed on the 54,000acre family station Bando, 30km from Lightning Ridge, accessible in dry weather only, with tours available 7 days a week, by appointment.

OPAL MINE ADVENTURE

Examine layers of opal clay and stunning sandstone formations in this underground adventure through an original working mine. While underground, watch highlights of the Lightning Ridge mining industry and discover the daily duties of an opal miner. Once you have mastered the knowledge of unearthing these precious gems, pop above ground to the fossicking area and dig for your very own ‘rough’ opal treasure. If lady luck eludes you, stop by the showroom where you will find cut and polished opals, jewellery, souvenirs and trinkets.

BIG OPAL UNDERGROUND MINE TOUR

Navigate an authentic working opal mine. The adventure begins with a careful descent down a mine shaft, made possible by an impressive metal spiral staircase, connecting you to a series of tunnels 113 steps underground. The tour is self-guided with the aid of a map. The tunnels are wide and spacious which debunk many preconceptions of underground mines being small, confined spaces. Venture back above ground to the gift shop and pick up a token of your adventure or hunt for one in the on-site fossicking heaps.

HISTORICAL SOCIETY HERITAGE COTTAGE

Take a step back in time by visiting the Historical Society Heritage Cottage where

find a life-size sculpture of Charlie Nettleton, the man who sunk the first mine in the Ridge in 1902 and is considered the founder of the black opal mining industry.

THE BEAUTY OF OUR OUTBACK REGION IS NOT LIMITED TO THE LUNAR-LIKE LANDSCAPE OF THE OPAL FIELDS, OR THE IMPRESSIVE UNDULATING RIDGES AND STRINGY SCRUB OF OUR NATIVE BUSHLANDS.

THE SKY ABOVE HOLDS just as much splendour, coming alive with incredible hues of pink, purple, orange and red, as the sun takes its reprieve, and the moon begins its night-time watch.

CAMPING

Relax on an RV Friendly site at a primitive campground, many free, others charge a small overnight fee. Campgrounds are located in Carinda, Collarenebri, Cumborah, Walgett and Burren Junction and have basic facilities such as toilets, showers and BBQs.

Many pubs across the region offer free camping. Check for details and availability with bar staff when stopping in for a counter meal.

The famous Lightning Ridge Sunday Markets are held weekly at the Lightning Ridge Visitor Information Centre Gardens during high season from March to October while the Walgett Community Outdoor Markets are held quarterly in Apex Park.

NATURE’S PLAYGROUND

NARRAN LAKE NATURE RESERVE

With over 8000 hectares of open lake and extensive wetlands, the Narran Lake Nature Reserve is surrounded by sandy and rocky ridges, dense eucalyptus, coolabah, and Acacia woodlands.

Located between the townships of Brewarrina and Walgett, terrain characteristics prevent water flowing along the Narran River to reach the Barwon River, instead the water pools create a natural wonderland teeming with wildlife. Recognised as one of the largest ibis rookeries in Australia, the reserve is a habitat for a diverse range of waterbirds including migrating species, offering a protected place to breed and feed.

The nature reserve is recognised as a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention and is an important cultural site for local Aboriginal peoples, who assist in the joint management of the reserve.

BURRIMA BOARDWALK

Explore the Macquarie Marshes via the Burrima boardwalk, providing an immersive encounter with nature. The 2km long boardwalk negotiates a forest of River Red Gum, marshlands and dense reeds, providing vantage points to spot the estimated 260 animal and bird species living in the wetlands. Take in the elevated position from the platform of the observation tower and gain an appreciation for the expansiveness of the largest reed bed in southern Australia, part of the Northern Marsh.

The boardwalk is located at ‘Burrima’, a private property on the western edge of the Northern Nature Reserve. To ensure the conservation of the wetland and floodplain habitat, visitors can gain access to the Macquarie Marshes via registration of interest.

For fishing licences, equipment and advice on good spots to fish or camp see Hunt Camp Fish in Walgett or Mr Cheap in Lightning Ridge. Drop into the local Visitor Information Centre and collect a copy of ‘Gone Fishing’ for more information on the best places to fish, and remember .. it’s always worth chatting to the locals for some inside information on where the fish are biting.

MACQUARIE MARSHES NATURE RESERVE

Pack your binoculars, picnic and sense of adventure and set out for a day of birdwatching.

Located approximately 100km north of Warren, the Macquarie Marshes Nature Reserve is one of the largest remaining semi-permanent wetlands in southeastern Australia. See how many of the 230 species of woodland and wetlands birds you can spot as they flock to the marshes to breed.

WILLIE RETREAT MACQUARIE MARSHES

Willie Retreat boasts its own man-made wetland system and offers camping sites and accommodation in the heart of the Macquarie Marshes. Great spot for bird watching, star gazing or just getting out into the bush.

To protect the reserve, which is considered one of the most important waterbird nesting sites in Australia, public access is restricted. Book a guided tour, held over the long weekend in October, via the Pilliga Forest Discovery Centre. Or explore the Macquarie Marshes from the car, on a self-guided scenic drive along the Gibson Way Road (4WD recommended).

Be sure to stop off at the bird viewing platform that overlooks the Terrigal Creek, as you head towards Quambone.

CAR DOOR TOURS

Five colour and number coded Car Door Tours are our solution to visitors wanting a fun, self-guided adventure that takes in all of Lightning Ridge’s quirky attractions and landmarks. Some attractions are free, others have an entrance fee, all provide a better understanding into life in our remote and fascinating region.

The Blue Car Door Tour is the shortest of the routes, great for those with limited time. Highlights include a self-guided tour of an underground mine at the Opal Mine Adventure, and over 2300 species of cacti at Bevan’s Black Opal & Cactus Nursery.

The Red Car Door Tour begins at the site of the first town settlement known as Wallangulla or Old Town, established in 1906 after the first opal rush to the region. The tour takes in Sim’s Hill, the highest point in the district and continues via Amigo’s Castle, the Bottle House and Kangaroo Hill.

The Green Car Door Tour is accessible only when the roads are dry, even then it is advised that care is taken, as the unsealed route navigates ridges, rehabilitated areas and a low-level floodway.

The reward for this bold journey is landmarks such as a spiritual stone labyrinth and Nebia Hill, a pit that supplies raw stones such as quartz, jasper, agate and topaz. The destination is Nettleton’s First Shaft Lookout Historical Reserve, the town’s very first opal mine site and the best view in town.

Nearby is a house made of beer cans, with a guest book waiting for your signature, you’ll find it inside the fridge. If you decide to watch the warm glow of the sunset descend across the region from the lookout, be sure to travel leisurely back into town, careful not to turn our precious wildlife into speed bumps.

The longest of the self-guided routes is the Yellow Car Door Tour. It begins at the Three Mile Opal Fields, taking in the Big Opal Mine, examples of mining equipment and historical stone miners’ cottages. Drop into the Bird of Paradise Art Gallery, before checking out the Chamber of the Black Hand, an underground attraction showcasing hundreds of hand-crafted sculptures. From here you will see the excavated site of the Australian Opal Centre and the Black Opal Heritage Shed, the current home of exhibits and information on the region’s opal history. Continue to Lunatic Hill and the 4 Mile Opal Field. The route finishes with the chance for a couple of happy snaps with Stanley the Emu, before heading back into town.

The Orange Car Door is the newest of all the Car Door Tours! It wanders through genuine mining communities and active opal fields and following the car doors is probably the safest way to avoid getting lost in this frontier style place.

Allow a full day to make the most of this tour and include lunch and/or dinner at one of the 3 Pubs in the Scrub along the way.

TRACKER WALFORD WALKWAY

The Tracker Walford Walkway commemorates the life of Norman Walford, an Aboriginal Tracker who passed away in Walgett in December 1981. Norman worked around NSW as a tracker, receiving a commendation from the Commissioner of Police for finding a man on Booka Booka Station, Brewarrina, in December 1957. The track was built by his family so that the community and visitors could enjoy walking by the Namoi River. The entrance to the track has become a favourite wedding location, with the track extending 1.5km along the river.

GREAT ARTESIAN DRIVE

Soothe your mind, body and soul along the Great Artesian Drive, a route overflowing with hot, mineral-rich artesian baths.

Each stop offers a distinct setting to bask in the rejuvenating water drawn deep from within the Great Artesian Basin. KAMILAROI HIGHWAY

RENOWNED ARTIST JOHN MURRAY CALLS LIGHTNING RIDGE HOME AND YOU CAN’T ESCAPE HIS IMPACT ON THE TOWN.

DEPENDING ON WHICH WAY you approach the Walgett Shire you might be greeted by a giant emu, Stanley, made from Volkswagens and satellite dishes or a giant lilac Farmer changing his props with the seasons!

On Morilla Street, Lighting Ridge an old combi given wings and a propeller, flown by an emu can’t be missed. Australian Pop & Street Artist Chris Duffy recently put paint to a corrugated shed wall at Carinda to create a bright mural as a nod to David Bowie and the Let’s Dance Carinda Festival, while Artists Jenny McKracken and local Frank Wright created the Jimmy Little Mural on the Walgett Water Tower.

Lightning Ridge is a town with a creative soul. The influence of art in Lightning Ridge is evident with several galleries including Chambers of the Black Hand, Bird of Paradise Gallery and Lightning Ridge Arts & Crafts.

The John Murray Gallery is a must visit location and his work captures the stark beauty of Outback Australia. Art is not only restricted to galleries with street art spilling out across the town and many locals displaying their own talent through sculpture dotted through the opal fields. Keep your eyes peeled along the car door tours for a real treat!

2 KOOL 4 SKOOL

Along a prominent wall in the heart of Lightning Ridge, near the Visitor Information Centre, is a vibrant mural displaying six whimsical emus. Each emu presents a humorous expression, along with sunglasses, jewellery or piercings. The ‘2 Kool 4 Skool’ mural, which received a silver medal in the Best External Mural category of the 2022 Australian Street Art Awards, was painted by local artist John Murray. The painting portrays the emus in bursts of colour on a dark background surrounded by the handprints of dozens of local children. The kid’s contribution to the mural has infused the community with a sense of pride.

WALGETT WATER TOWER

Taking out silver in the 2022 Australian Street Art Awards for Best Mega Mural, is the painting of local entertainer Jimmy Little, displayed across the face of the Walgett Water Tower. The mural, a tribute to the legendary Indigenous musician, is based on a photograph by John Elliott, with artist Jenny McCracken bringing the portrait to life in an impressive piece of artwork. The background of the painting was

designed by local Gamileroi artist Frank Wright and portrays the Walgett Region, including rivers and local totems, the sand goanna, dragonfly and emu. On closer inspection, admirers of the painting can see the reflection of Jimmy’s wife in his eyes.

STANLEY – THE EMU

On the outskirts of Lightning Ridge, standing tall and proud, ready to greet visitors and welcome residents home, is the 18-metre-tall steel sculpture, ‘Stanley the Emu’. A finalist in the Best Landmark Sculpture category of the 2022 Australian Street Art Awards, Stanley has become one of the most photographed icons of the Australian outback. The sculpture was designed by renowned outback artist John Murray and built with the help of community volunteers. A trip to the region is not complete without a photo with our beloved Stanley.

ARTESIAN BORE BATHS

ARTESIAN BORE BATHS ARE THE OUTBACK’S VERSION OF HOT SPRINGS AND IN THE WALGETT REGION, WATER IS AROUND 40° CELSIUS.

THERE ARE FEW THINGS more relaxing than slipping into a hot outdoor bath at the end of a long drive or day of exploring. It relaxes your muscles, soothes your joints and melts stress and anxiety away. Older than time and highly pressurised, the basin’s water can reach temperatures from 30 to 100°C, and is laced with minerals such as sulphur, calcium and magnesium that contribute to its longfabled healing powers.

The phenomenal Great Artesian Basin lies below over one fifth of Australia’s landmass, providing an underground reservoir of freshwater. Its water has been tapped to feed animals, irrigate crops and support remote settlements since Europeans sunk the first bore out near Bourke in 1878. But long before this, the movements of Aboriginal communities through the arid outback were guided by the availability of groundwater bubbling up from naturally occurring mound springs.

These days the baths still serve their intended purpose but they are much more in demand for rest and relaxation; soak in the hot artesian waters at sunrise, sunset or any other time your heart desires. Evening swims are particularly recommended as you can float in the 40-degree water while taking in the stunning expanse of the starry sky.

GRAB A BEVVY and discover secret haunts and favourite fishing spots. Uncover the best sunset viewing sites, and where to snag a precious gemstone. Or simply sit amongst the friendly banter and savour the relaxed atmosphere of our local watering holes.

The pubs in the opal fields serve up big feeds, with a side of opal mining know-how. Swing by the Grawin Club in the Scrub for a pizza, or a belly bursting 700-gram T-Bone steak. Grab a drink and a pool cue from the bar staff at the Sheepyard Inn and hit a few balls around the custom-made pool table. Better yet, drop in on a Wednesday night and join the local comp.

Residents keeping the bar seats warm at Carinda Hotel will tell you their pub takes the cake, boasting fame after featuring in David Bowie’s ‘Let’s Dance’ video, back in 1983. Roll into the Collarenebri Club for a game of social bowls, or partake in a good old country counter meal while catching a game on the big screen at the Junction City Hotel Burren Junction.

Whichever outback bar you choose, you are sure to meet long bearded opal miners with pockets full of dirt encrusted nobbies, sun kissed farmers and industrious proprietors, chatting humbly with mates, poised ready to welcome visitors with a big dose of outback hospitality.

Bruno’s Italian Restaurant serves a hunger busting carnivore special, the Amore pizza. Or check out the local Lightning Ridge Bowling Club with a number of different dining options on offer.

Walgett’s Stone’s Throw Café serves up a seasonal menu; the Truffle Mushrooms, Cauliflower Salad and New York bagels are complemented by turmeric lattes, cold pressed juice and good old-fashioned milkshakes.

Try a berry flavoured Bougainvillea smoothie or a Walgett Mud iced coffee at nearby Blend and Co, a fresh juice and smoothie bar serving cold drinks and coffee alongside gifts and homewares.

Hon Doo Restaurant dishes up the region’s token outback Chinese fare, the Singapore Noodles and Lemon Chicken featuring approvingly in online reviews. Chowny’s Cafe Collarenebri serves just that, along with burgers, chiko rolls,

potato scallops and all the traditional take-away favourites available with a good dusting of chicken salt.

The Far West Store in Carinda is a treasure trove of local handmade gifts served up with a range of tasty treats. There’s sponge cakes and shearing comb key hooks, chicken satay alongside compositable dish clothes, homemade tarts and Turkish towels.

Opal was first discovered at Lightning Ridge in the late 1880s, by Jack Murray, a boundary rider who lived on a property nearby. Sometime later, miner Charlie Nettleton arrived and sank the very first shaft. Now known as Nettleton’s first shaft lookout complete with monument, jump on the Green Car Door and catch the most amazing sunset from the top, walk the stone labyrinth and don’t miss out on the perfect photo opportunity at Beer Can House.

There is a local Dreamtime Story told by the late Elder June Barker about how opals came to be in Lightning Ridge. The

story is about a beautiful butterfly who didn’t listen to her family and instead flew off into the dangerous mountains where she became trapped underneath snow. As the snow melted down the mountains and across the plains the colours disappeared from Pallah Pallah’s wings and into the ground forming the colours of the rainbow on the beautiful opal stones’. Australia is the world’s major producer of opal, found in locations around margins of the Great Artesian Basin. What distinguishes the opal fields of Lightning Ridge and nearby Grawin, Glengarry and Sheepyard, however, is the presence of the largest known deposits of black opal in the world.

Its unique dark body tone acts to intensify the vibrancy of colour

networking throughout the stone, culminating into spectacular gems. It took a while for opal to achieve the worldwide acclaim it enjoys today because nobody in the overseas market had ever seen the dark, brilliant form of opal mined in Lightning Ridge. Determined efforts won a valuable market for black opal, which is today recognised as the most rare and valuable form of opal in the world.

For decades, the opal fields have attracted a diverse range of individuals, partnerships and small-scale mining operations hoping to discover the elusive treasure. Some strike it lucky, many leave unrewarded, others never stop looking. Opal mining remains physically demanding and dangerous, as the different layers of earth are dissected; ironstone, clay soil, shin cracker, sandstone and the prospective opal bearing layer must all be worked methodically.

ABORIGINAL CULTURE

THE WALGETT REGION EXTENDS OVER THE LANDS OF THE GAMILAROI, YUWAALARAAY, NGEMBA AND WAIYLWON NATIONS WHERE DYNAMIC ABORIGINAL COMMUNITIES AND CULTURE HOLD A SPECIAL PLACE.

RESEARCHERS WORKING TO understand the internationally renowned paleontology site at Cuddy Springs have identified that people lived in the Walgett region alongside megafauna, and Elders confirm this knowledge in creation stories.

Places of high Aboriginal cultural value such as the Aboriginal Cemetery at Collarenebri are actively maintained by Elders and community. Places of ancient and contemporary occupation and material culture like the Carved Trees at Collymongle are also highly valued and protected.

The Barwon, Namoi and Narran Rivers, and the many warrambul (watercourses), are important to the Walgett Region’s environment and Aboriginal communities. Book a Cultural Tour of Dharriwaa (Narran Lakes) through the National Parks and Wildlife Service to understand its significance to Aboriginal people as a water source but also for trade, celebration and culture.

Local Aboriginal cultural knowledge includes ancient and contemporary history, continuing connections and custodianship of Country, deep mysteries and extraordinary stories about places, people and events. During a visit to the region you will have the opportunity to absorb local understandings and history at one of the many exhibition spaces or the informative walking track along the Namoi River at Walgett or the Sound Trails Tour which discusses the significant civil rights event of The Freedom Ride.

The region is fortunate to have a number of Indigenous Artists such as Frank Wright who collaborated on the Jimmy Little Mural at Walgett and creatives working across a wide variety of mediums from creating traditional tools, carving emu eggs and traditional dance, to painting, weaving and contemporary music and photography. Appreciate this extraordinary contribution to the rich cultural landscape of our region with a visit to The Goondee Aboriginal Keeping Place in Lightning Ridge.

There is much evidence of Aboriginal people’s sacred and everyday lives across the Walgett Shire. Gulbaa (coolabah trees) and guburruu (black box trees) were cut by yuundu (stone axes) to make canoes, shelters, containers and shields from their bark, and decorations for ceremonies. The IBC Gem Garden at Lightning Ridge or Carinya Station are home to local bush tucker and medicine.

‘Yaama’ means ‘Hello how are you going’? Say ‘Yaama nginda’ to one person or ‘Yaama ngindaay’ to a group. If you feel good and someone greets you with ‘Yaama’ you would answer ‘Gaba’.

Goodbye is ‘Yanaaya Baayaami biyaay’ (go with god) or more simply ‘Ngaya yanaay’ (I am going).

Aboriginal people here are ‘mari’ non-Aboriginal men and women are ‘wanda’ and ‘wadjiin’. Babies are ‘birralii’

PLAINS OF PLENTY

THE WALGETT REGION IS FAMOUS FOR ITS PRECIOUS STONES, BUT IT ALSO PACKS A PUNCH WHEN IT COMES TO AGRICULTURAL EFFICIENCIES, GENERATING A BOUNTY OF HIGH YIELD CROPS AND HEALTHY, MEAT PRODUCING STOCK SURE TO BE THE ENVY OF MOST FARMERS.

THE WALGETT REGION produces high quality sheep and cattle, and more recently goats. Extensive open plains allow farming across thousands of acres. Large scale production of wheat, barley, oats, canola and faba beans, which are sold on the domestic and international market.

Cotton is grown, developing from a small seed into a bush filled with white fluffy cotton bolls, putting on a spectacular snow-like exhibition across the cotton fields before the springtime harvest begins.

In a good year, the farming cycle begins in April, sowing millions of seeds in impressive rows, hundreds of metres

long. Efforts are rewarded as green seedlings emerge and grow into robust, healthy plants.

In October, the district swells as seasonal workers arrive, a buzz of excitement erupting across the region as they strip the crops and cart the grain to be stored. This continues until December, when the crops are stripped bare, and the silos are full.

But between the daily certainties of each sunrise and each sunset, fall the trial and tribulations of living on the land. Days, weeks and months filled with the joy of success, or the pain of defeat as they live through endless droughts or flooded paddocks; no year is quite the same.
