Welcome to the Whitsundays
The Whitsundays offers a great diversity of attractions,
activities and experiences with the stunning backdrop of the Great Barrier Reef and 74 island wonders. We believe that the Whitsundays offers, quite simply, the best Great Barrier Reef experience there is, being situated right in the heart of this vast living structure, which is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. Almost half of all trips to the Great Barrier Reef take place in the Whitsundays. The Great Barrier Reef hosts one third of the world’s coral species and is home to more than 1,500 species of fish as well as turtles, whales, dolphins, dugongs, reef sharks, manta rays and giant clams. The reef also protects the Coral Sea that surrounds the Whitsunday Islands and mainland, creating an aquatic playground in which visitors can swim, sail, snorkel and scuba dive in safe, calm waters. Heart Reef, off the Whitsunday coast, is a coral reef that has formed naturally into the shape of a heart and has become a well-known landmark from the air.
The Whitsunday region also boasts one of the best beaches in the world - the 7km long Whitehaven Beach, made of pure white silica sand. We hope you enjoy this Visitor Guide, which is intended to inspire you to visit the region, and we encourage you to also check our website for more information or to book your next holiday. We look forward to welcoming you to the wonderful Whitsundays. Craig Turner CEO Tourism Whitsundays Destination Marketing & Visitor Attraction

Whitsunday Events The Whitsundays plays host to a raft of events throughout the year, from family-friendly celebrations to sporting events and music festivals.
One of the biggest events of the year on the Whitsunday
social calendar is the annual Airlie Beach Festival of Music, in November, when the mainland comes alive with thousands of music fans. The annual festival attracts top acts from around the world to play in the central ‘big top’ marquee right on the waterfront, next to the Whitsunday Sailing Club. Musicians also play at many bars and restaurants around the town to create a lively and vibrant atmosphere throughout the weekend. Winter in the Whitsundays, meanwhile, is a sports lover’s paradise, as there is a whole raft of exciting sporting events on offer. First up is the Bowen River Rodeo and Campdraft, in June, on the banks of the Bowen River, with plenty of adrenalin-fuelled action and family-friendly activities. This is followed by Airlie Beach Race Week and Audi Hamilton Island Race Week, both in August, two of the most eagerly anticipated events on the Australian yachting calendar, drawing hundreds of competitors, their families and friends to the region.
6
tourismwhitsundays.com.au
As a lead-in to Airlie Beach Race Week, the Whitsunday Reef Festival celebrates living in the heart of the reef and brings together fashion, food and plenty of family fun, with games and competitions for the kids, a classic car display, parties, live music and the ‘famous’ Saturday afternoon street parade. The winter is also a great time for athletic events in the Whitsundays, with the mild winter weather attracting athletes from the cooler southern states for a “race-cation” in the tropics. In June, the Great Whitehaven Beach Run is a memorable experience on the pristine sands of world-famous Whitehaven Beach and a unique, fun event for the whole family looking for a fitness challenge. In July, the annual Airlie Beach Running Festival takes place on the mainland, the Whitsunday’s premier running event and the largest onshore mass participation event in the region, including the Heart of the Reef Marathon (42.2km) and the free Turtle Club 1km Family Fun Walk.
Whitsunday Events
And as spring starts to spread its warmth throughout the Whitsundays, the Airlie Beach Triathlon takes place, in September. Established in 1999, the event continues to evolve and has become an ‘event weekend’ in the Whitsundays...or a “race-cation”! Also in spring, Airlie Beach becomes energised when thousands of university students arrive for their annual ‘Spring Break’ in the tropical seaside town, keen to take advantage of this aquatic playground and make the most of all the fun activities there are on offer. And last but not least, both the community and holidaymakers come together on Australia Day every January for the Great Australian Bites - an afternoon of Australia Day celebrations, tasty food and live performances in Fairy Tree Park, on the foreshore. Relax to the sounds of local musicians while chefs from local restaurants serve up culinary delights, showcase tasting plates and give cooking demonstrations.

Great Barrier Reef The Great Barrier Reef has fascinated people for centuries and is one of the world’s most iconic visitor attractions.
Stretching for 2,300km along Australia’s northeast coast, the aptly named reef is the jewel in the crown of Queensland’s tourism offering...
Millions of people visit the Great Barrier Reef each year and almost half of those (44%) visit it in the Whitsundays. The Whitsundays is located in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef and is an ideal place from which to explore this World Heritage Listed attraction. It is hard not to be mesmerised by the dazzling array of brightly coloured coral and fish as you swim, snorkel or dive on one of the seven natural wonders of the world. You can choose from any number of vessels to transport you there, from romantic old timber yachts to fast and sleek motor cruisers and everything in between. Or you can fly over the reef for a totally different perspective, including the most photographed reef in the world, Heart Reef, a natural heart-shaped formation that has stirred many a wedding proposal and declaration of love. However you choose to have your Great Barrier Reef experience – and you might choose more than one! – you will certainly fall in love in the ‘heart of the reef’, the Whitsundays.

Whitehaven Beach & Hill Inlet There are two ‘bucket list’ items to tick off in the Whitsundays! Sink your toes into the white, silica sands of Whitehaven Beach and take the short walk up to the lookout and enjoy the breathtaking beauty of Hill Inlet.
Whitehaven Beach The sparkling, pristine Whitehaven Beach is often voted one of the top beaches in Australia and, indeed, the world.
The 7km of pure white, silica sand stretching into the distance will take your breath away! Whether you want to lay on the beach and soak up the stunning scenery, swim in the crystal clear water, or venture deeper into the bushland bordering the beach for a walk, Whitehaven Beach is a ‘must-see’ when you are visiting the Whitsundays.
Hill Inlet At the northern end of Whitehaven Beach is Hill Inlet, a
stunning, swirling fusion of colours created by the sand meeting the sea as the tide comes in and out of the inlet. Best seen from the viewing platform where the swirling pattern can be seen in its entirety, most tours to Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet also incorporate a walk along the bush trail that leads to the lookout.
10
tourismwhitsundays.com.au
Getting There There is a wide choice of day trips to Whitehaven Beach and Hill
Inlet including by ferry, power boat, sailing yacht or super-fast inflatable! Most overnight sailing trips also stop in and many self-sufficient boaties are drawn to anchor along its peaceful shores. For amazing aerial views, you might want to see Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet by seaplane, light aircraft or helicopter. Whatever you choose, you’re guaranteed to bring home memories that will last a lifetime.

Whitsunday sailing holidays come in all shapes and sizes

BareBoating There is no better way to experience the beauty of the Whitsunday Islands than on a boat. And why not set your own course around the stunning waters of the Whitsunday Islands by chartering your own ‘bareboat’ - meaning you, your family and your friends are the crew!

Bareboating
Enjoy the freedom of choosing your own route and going at your own pace as you discover cascading waterfalls hidden on the islands. Be the first to leave footprints on untouched beaches each morning. Enjoy paddleboards, scuba diving, snorkelling and fishing at your leisure.
The friendly and professional bareboat team will help you plan an itinerary that is perfectly tailored to your needs as you carve out your own adventure amongst the islands, mostly uninhabited National Parks. With more than 40 anchorages, there is always a tranquil spot to lose yourself and at night you can gaze up at the endless expanse of starlit sky, sheltered from the breeze in an inlet or secluded bay.
You can choose a sailing yacht, a catamaran or a power cruiser, and you can go it alone or ask for a sail guide and hostess to accompany you. No licence is required for bareboating - you will receive a detailed and comprehensive briefing before you start and help is only a call away on the VHF radio. Vessels are fully equipped with all the necessities for a comfortable stay on board - all you need to bring is your sunscreen, swimming gear, a hat and sunglasses‌and a sense of adventure and wonderment. whitsunday islands The Whitsunday Islands are dotted along the east coast of Queensland like emeralds in a silver sea. They were formed when sea levels rose, which created numerous ‘drowned’ mountains that now protrude from the Coral Sea with their distinctive spikey vegetation and rocky outcrops.

Whitsunday islands
With 74 ‘island wonders’ in all, it really is a paradise for sailors, scuba divers, snorkellers and swimmers…not to mention kayakers, paddle boarders, jetskiiers and fishermen.
Six of the islands are developed - Hamilton Island, Hayman Island, South Molle Island, Daydream Island, Long Island and Lindeman Island. The rest are undeveloped and are just waiting to be explored by adventurous holidaymakers keen to walk the many trails and perhaps camp overnight at designated National Park camping grounds.
Hamilton Island Hamilton Island is the largest inhabited island of the Whitsunday
Islands and is the only one with its own commercial airport, with short direct flights from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Cairns. There’s plenty to do during your holiday on Hamilton Island. You can enjoy a wide selection of bars and restaurants, an abundance of water sports and activities - and that’s just the start! Most of the car-free island is covered in bushland, and the coast is fringed by coral reefs. With six different levels of accommodation to choose from across the island - ranging from 5-star couples’ suites, to family-friendly apartments and holiday homes, a stay on Hamilton Island really does offer something for everyone.
Long Island Long Island is the closest island to the mainland, and as
suggested by the name, is 9km long while only being 400m wide at its widest point! Long Island is mostly National Park and has 13km of walking trails to explore the plentiful native flora and fauna on this dramatic natural landscape. Palm Bay Resort, on Long Island, offers a unique holiday experience combining gorgeous Balinese style accommodation right on the beach with the convenience and affordability of self-catering. Palm Bay is a quiet paradise for visitors seeking tranquillity. A place to relax, rejuvenate and escape. The resort can also be hired on a sole-occupancy basis for weddings and events.
Camping on the Islands with secluded beaches, fringing coral reefs and distinctive
hoop pines and dry rainforest, the Whitsunday Islands are a spectacular camping ground. Whitsunday Island, the largest island in the group, has many great camping spots including Dugong Beach, which is suitable for larger groups (up to 36 people allowed) and has a good sandy beach backed by rainforest; or Nari’s Beach is more private (maximum six people allowed) and the camping area is set under the rainforest canopy, tucked against a steep hill, with outstanding views of Cid Island.

Adventure The Whitsundays has its adventurous side for those who like a bit of action with their holiday!
You can dive, snorkel and sail in the Whitsundays with the Great Barrier Reef providing a natural shelter that ensures safe, calm waters. There is also excellent fishing, including rivers, lakes, estuaries and ocean fishing. Chasing giant trevally on the outer reef is an adrenalin packed pastime. There is also a wide choice of watersports on offer in the Whitsundays including jetskiing and wake boarding for the speed-freaks and parasailing if you want to get high over the islands. And for the ultimate high, you can skydive from a plane at several thousand feet above the ground, enjoying the best view of the Whitsundays as you hurtle through the air on your aerial adventure.
The Whitsunday Islands and mainland are criss-crossed by hundreds of kilometres of walking tracks, most affording stunning views and leading to secluded beaches and bays. Don a backpack and don’t forget to wear sensible shoes and a hat and always take water with you (remember to tell someone where you’re going and what time you’ll be back). For a very special back-to-nature experience, you can camp overnight in designated National Park camping spots and wake up feeling as if it’s just you and the wildlife on the planet.
If you feel like getting away from it all, why not charter a chopper and fly off to somewhere where it’s just you and the birds for company. tourismwhitsundays.com.au

Shopping The lure of shopping in the Whitsundays is the variety and interest the shops offer, with many individually-owned stores having their own distinct style.
Jewellery, homewares, artworks and Indigenous artefacts
are all to be found by the curious shopper, as well as fashions, food and fun things for the kids. Not surprisingly, the main street of Airlie Beach - the stepping off point for the Whitsunday Islands - is also dotted with souvenir shops with colourful swimwear, sarongs, sandals and sunhats swinging from rails on the footpath. For a unique experience check out Proserpine’s lanes and alleyways with their striking ‘art deco’ shop fronts. Wander through the narrow lanes crammed with clothing and delve into a cornucopia of homewares, jewellery and gemstones. Some of the island resorts also offer ‘retail therapy’ with leisure wear, bags, shoes and swimmers all on offer to give your holiday some zing! And if you’re looking for something uniquely Australian, there are shops offering didgeridoos, boomerangs and Australian opals.

If the ocean is more your thing, there are plenty of familyfriendly water sports available including kayaking and standup paddle boarding, and, of course, snorkelling on the many fringing reefs. Horseshoe Bay, Bowen, is very family-friendly as the fringing reef is close to the beach – at low tide you can walk out to it – and is very protected.

Designed by five-time British Open winner Peter Thomson, the course is strung along the spectacular ridges and steep valleys of Dent Island and boasts a variety of obstacles for those willing to take on the challenge. The course is a ‘must-do’ for both novice and professional golfers and offers spectacular views of the surrounding Whitsunday Islands and Coral Sea.
Proserpine The Proserpine Golf Club is a friendly club that welcomes visitors to the only 18-hole golf course on the mainland. Just 20km from Airlie Beach, the course features a picturesque waterway, challenging par 3’s, wonderful bird life and a backdrop of beautiful cane fields and is certainly a relaxing day out.
Collinsville There is also a 9-hole golf course at Collinsville, inland from
Bowen. Situated near the Collinsville CBD, the course offers players 9 holes in a natural bush setting. Open from 7:30am, the golf club welcomes visitors year-round.
Bowen the Bowen Golf Club was established in 1928 and, over the
years, the course has earned the reputation of being a ‘hidden gem’ - a fantastic 9-hole, 18 tee links course right on the ocean front, that is both rewarding and challenging to golfers of all levels. The reward is just walking around this beautiful course, the challenges come with Mother Nature and the coastal winds she whips up.

Eating Out
Chefs all over the Whitsundays are making the most of the fresh, delicious produce with innovative menus designed to suit the tropical lifestyle. Whether it’s a counter meal at one of the friendly pubs in Collinsville and Proserpine, a seafood bonanza overlooking Bowen marina, or a meal in one of Airlie Beach’s chic and cosmopolitan restaurants, dining out in the Whitsundays is a treat!
From simple fish and chips on the beach, to a delectable ‘degustation’ tasting menu, the Whitsundays has every kind of dining experience on offer, including plenty of children’s options. There is also an eclectic mix of bars and cafés for a refreshing pick-me-up and some restaurants have live music playing as well. For a list of restaurants and cafés and their phone numbers, please see page 57 in the Directory at the rear of this Visitor Guide.
Every kind of cuisine is on offer with many eateries choosing to blend cultures and tastes together in one menu.

weddings The Whitsundays is known as the wedding ‘heart’ of Australia due to its stunning natural beauty and tropical climate. About 1,500 weddings take place every year, with couples coming from all over Australia and the world to tie the knot in the Whitsundays.
Catering is also taken care of with wedding venues making the most of the fresh local produce and wild-caught seafood the region abounds in.
But it’s not just the sublime locations and swaying palm trees that lure couples to the destination.
And while you might think that getting married away from home could be a chore, think again!
It is also renowned for its excellent range of ceremony and reception venues, its accommodation options and its professional wedding suppliers.
The Whitsundays has dozens of professional wedding suppliers including celebrants, cake-makers, photographers and chauffeurs ready to make your dream wedding come true.
So much Choice The Whitsundays offers every kind of wedding, from ‘barefoot on the beach’ to opulent luxury. Whether you are eloping with just you and your betrothed or you have all your family and friends with you, the Whitsundays can offer the right venue and accommodation. 34
tourismwhitsundays.com.au
There is also a good choice of day spas, for the pre-wedding pampering, and hairdressers and makeup artists for the Big Day. You might also want to think about hiring a wedding planner to assist with ‘on the ground’ details and some resorts have their own wedding co-ordinators.
weddings
A Wedding with a Difference! The Whitsundays is in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef and
you can be married on this unique living structure, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. You and your wedding party can cruise to the reef on board a comfortable vessel and say ‘I Do’ with the incredible backdrop of colourful corals and the ocean stretching into the horizon.
An incredibly romantic spot for a Whitsundays wedding is the beautiful Cedar Creek Falls, about a 40-minute drive from Airlie Beach. Equally pretty in the summer or winter months, Cedar Creek Falls is a hidden gem providing a tranquil and serene spot to say ‘I Do’.
Or why not have a country wedding with a rural backdrop and invoke some rustic charm?
Or make a splash and get married on the water. Couples have dived, snorkelled and sailed into married life together in the Whitsundays!
Work-worn tractors and weather-beaten barns against a backdrop of swaying canefields create striking wedding photos and you can enjoy good old-fashioned hospitality in a farm stay, bed and breakfast or country pub.
And for those who feel more at home in the sky you can charter your own seaplane or helicopter for an intimate ceremony with just you and your closest family and friends on a deserted beach.

Luxury in the Whitsundays Luxury has arrived in the Whitsundays and it’s here to stay!
In recent years, developments on both the mainland and
The range of luxury accommodation is also growing, with the opening of full-service hotels offering bed turn-down, among other things, as well as luxurious apartments and holiday homes.
On the mainland, new shops offering clothing and accessories have opened, and new restaurants are pushing the boundaries with their culinary skills and use of local produce.
On the islands, developments such as the yacht club and qualia, on Hamilton Island, and the 18-hole championship golf course on neighbouring Dent Island, are bringing the Whitsundays’ offering to a new level.
islands have taken the Whitsundays in a new and welcome direction, while still maintaining the laid-back tropical charm that the region is known for.
Two restaurants in the Whitsundays are now proud recipients of the Australian Good Food Guide Chef’s Hat Award, in recognition of their outstanding cuisine. The two marinas on either side of Airlie Beach - the Port of Airlie and Abell Point Marina - continue to expand and evolve, offering visitors smart and chic precincts for shopping and dining.
36
tourismwhitsundays.com.au
Both Hayman Island and Daydream Island Resort & Spa are undergoing major multi-million dollar refurbishments to ensure they continue to deliver a first class experience for their guests.
Whitsunday Walks There are many beautiful places to walk in the Whitsundays with ancient flora and fauna and some unique Indigenous wildlife, such as the Proserpine Rock Wallaby. These are just some of the many and varied walks on offer.
Honeyeater Lookout
The entrance to the Honeyeater Lookout is in Kara Crescent, just behind Airlie Beach Main Street. Follow the trail up - it is quite steep to start - but you will be rewarded with some stunning views of the mainland and out to the islands. Especially rewarding in the cool of the morning when the air is clear and the views are crisp.
Conway Circuit
Conway National Park packs a rainforest punch on the hills of Airlie Beach and you can either lace up your boots or jump on your bike to discover the natural beauty. If you’re planning to hike there are plenty of tracks, from a short walk to suit beginners, right through to a three-day, two-night overland adventure called the Conway Circuit (formerly known as The Great Walk).
North Head Lighthouse, Bowen
There is a restored, 150-year-old lighthouse off the coast of Bowen and it is possible to walk out to the lighthouse with the year’s lowest daytime tides, a fantastic opportunity to spot beautiful sea life in the shallows.
Whitehaven Beach, Whitsunday Island
There are two walks on Whitehaven Beach - one at the Southern End, and one to the lookout over Hill Inlet at the Northern End. One or both of these can be accessed by a number of tours to Whitehaven Beach or on your own boat.
Passage Peak, Hamilton Island
Hamilton Island is accessible to day visitors - with transfers by Cruise Whitsundays - where you can walk to Passage Peak, self-guided. The walk is best done early morning or late afternoon and promises glimpses of some of the island’s varied wildlife.
THE NGARO SEA TRAIL
The Whitsundays has been home to the Ngaro people for more than 9,000 years and many sites throughout the islands hold special meaning for Ngaro descendants. You can experience the Whitsunday Ngaro Sea Trail, a unique blend of seaways and picturesque walks across Whitsunday, South Molle and Hook islands. Walk through open forests, grasslands and rainforest, climb rugged peaks and stroll along winding pathways. Visit www.npsr.qld.gov.au for a map. Jump onto the Queensland Parks and Wildlife website for more walks.

37
National Parks & Camping There are countless beautiful spots to camp in the Whitsundays, with rugged natural beauty, stunning views and an abundance of wildlife.
38
Whitsunday Island, the largest of the group, supports a
population of unadorned rock-wallabies and from late June to September the Whitsundays are an important calving ground for migrating humpback whales, resulting in regular sightings.
The park is readily accessible by private or commercial boat from Airlie Beach or Shute Harbour and some commercial transfer companies drop off and collect campers. If travelling by private vessel, always take the weather and tidal influences into account.
You can fish, snorkel and swim from the beach of your camp site and also explore the many trails that zig-zag across the islands. Keep your eyes peeled for white-brown scrub wren, kookaburras, yellow-faced honey eaters, ospreys, herons and egrets.
Facilities vary, but if present are limited to toilets and/or picnic tables. Campers must be self-sufficient. Remember to take fresh water, a fuel stove for cooking and insect repellent. Open fires and generators are not permitted and please remember to take your rubbish back home with you.
The Whitsunday Islands National Park protects 32 islands including Whitsunday Island with its world renowned Whitehaven Beach, as well as Black, Hook and Langford Islands.
Visitor numbers are limited to ensure a quality experience. You will need to book your site and purchase your permit in advance and display your camping permit tag prominently on your tent!

History & Heritage The Whitsundays has a rich history dating back millions of years, with the hilly islands formed when rising sea levels drowned a mainland mountain range. The Ngaro Aboriginal people, one of the earliest recorded Indigenous groups in Australia, were seen by Captain James Cook while exploring the Whitsunday Passage. The Ngaro people lived throughout the island chain and the nearby mainland for thousands of years. Rock art and middens at Hook Island’s Nara Inlet provide a record of their special way of life and there is an ancient Ngaro stone quarry on South Molle Island where tools were made. Named after the goddess of fertility Proserpinia, the township of Proserpine dates back to the 1870s when work-hungry people from all over the world arrived to grow and harvest sugar cane in the naturally fertile basin. The sugar mill, which processes about 2 million tonnes of cane each year, still stands in the middle of town. Established in 1861, Bowen is North Queensland’s oldest town and was even earmarked to be the capital of the north in the 1860s. Salt, beef and coal were all exported from the Bowen Jetty, on Front Beach, which turned 150 years old in 2017. The rich culture and history is evident at every turn in Bowen, which is famous for its historic murals on the walls of shops and pubs, and also its catalina museum celebrating the brave pilots

who used Bowen as a base in World War II. The Summergarden Theatre dating back to 1948 is also worth a visit. Collinsville and surrounds, meanwhile, are home to a number of characterful old pubs including the Bogie River Bush House and the Bowen River Hotel, which are great for getting to know the locals and hearing a few yarns over a counter lunch.

COALFACE EXPERIENCE Located on Railway Road, at the Collinsville Workers Club, the Coalface Experience tells the story of coal miners and their struggles, strife and mateship. The Coalface is open from 7:00am until late.
Road trip: An outback historical adventure! Get off the beaten track and explore a true Australian outback town where farming, mining and cattle-grazing sustain the economy, and rivers and unspoiled bush soothe the soul. To get to Collinsville, turn onto Peter Delamothe Road at Delta, about 5km north of Bowen on the Bruce Highway.
Whilst heading west towards Mount Aberdeen and the Great Dividing Range, you will pass through fields of colourful fruit and vegetables and further along the road, cropping country changes to grazing cattle stations. About 80km along Peter Delamothe Road, you will arrive at the small town of Collinsville, on Garrick Street. Stop at the Collinsville Information Centre on the way in, at the showgrounds, and chat to the friendly volunteer staff for the latest information and tips. Continue along Garrick Street onto Sonoma Street and stop at the park to take in the Pit Pony Experience. Centred around a life-size bronze sculpture, the project celebrates Australia’s last working pit ponies in the Collinsville mines. While in town, look for the various ‘selfie walls’ where you can photograph yourself alongside the much-loved pit ponies. From Sonoma Street, explore Stanley Street and Scottville Road for shopping, places to eat and local pubs and clubs including the Pit Pony Tavern on Stanley Street with its large Pit Pony photo collection. Or try a hot pie from Collinsville Bakehouse, in the Collinsville Plaza, or you can head to the Collinsville Worker’s Club. From Stanley Street, continue towards Scottville then left onto Railway Road. Keep an eye out for the Miners’ Memorial Statue. The ‘Coalface Experience’ Museum is dedicated to Collinsville’s coal mining heritage and depicts the history with interactive displays, historical records, audio-visual exhibits and theatrettes. Allow 1-2 hours for this fascinating tour, which pays tribute to the many Collinsville families who spent their working lives underground. Travelling back towards Bowen, just 4km along Peter Delamothe Road turn onto Strathmore Road and continue 33km along the gravel road to discover the Bowen River Hotel, originally built as a homestead in 1862 and steeped in history. And 33km further along Peter Delamothe Road towards Bowen, you can turn onto Normanby Road and continue 3km to the Bogie River Bush House, which offers a truly unique Australian experience. But visitors must book in advance!
