burkeville gathering hall 1,050 m2 | public gathering | term project 2012
6090 Russ Baker Way #115 Richmond, BC, Canada
The land was a 300 m wide flat site with no vegetation. Transformation is the huge word for this site. By providing a berm, visitors will gradually, be introduced to the building in the far sight. The minimum intervention approach to urban greenway: intergrates the function of seating, environmental interpretation, and orientation, While preserving as much of the natural corridor as possible during this transformation. This path demonstrates how minimal design solution can achieve a dramatic improvement to the landscape.

The major design challenge was how to preserve the natural habitat while creating the new urban uses of recreation and weather, meeting opportunities, and visual focal points. Four perennial flower gardens of white, yellow, purple and blue, act as patchwork on the former open fields, and turn the deserted land sites into attractions.

An infinity edge pool was created by visual effect from the reflective pool that seems to be extending to the horizon and falls to the Upper Arm Fraser River. By taking the advantage of the the site’s tranquil surroundings and abundant natural light, Burkeville gathering hall can be a great place to get away from the busy and hectic life The gathering hall can be rented for events such as wedding, dance hall, etc.

strathcona aquatic centre 2,150 m2 | recreational area | graduating project 2014 The Strathcona Aquatic Centre is an integral part of the future Strathcona Recreational Center. The new community development - which amenities also include an ice rink - intends to provide an important recreational focal point to the Downtown Eastside, a feature sorely missing in the current environment. The aquatic facility features a twenty five metre lap pool; an indoor water slide; a fitness centre; a hot tub; and a multipurpose space. The unique form of the building recalls a meandering path along a river in the hills; the sloped ramp of the roof does not only provide natural ventilation and light to the building, it also performs as an elevated park from where to catch a breeze.

The roof is a significant feature in this facility, it’s not only shaping the building but also providing an access to surrounding, creating an elevated park for the community, allowing daylight through the clerestorey windows, and collecting rainwater.

dwelling 67.24 m2 | residential | term project 2013 Brynee creek @ SE Burnaby 49.211654,-122.965894 Explorations of Bryne Creek Ravine, wooded site overlooking a small private and public use of dwelling suggested a switchback organization of spaces where the surrounding has been extended and combined with a newly created meandering path that offers an introduction to the site. Program: Dwelling for a family of three who love nature. The wife has her office on the main floor, so it can be access by the public. While the husband has his own alcove tha connects to the ‘observation spot’. The idea of observation spot is to connect with the surrounding, being outside in the -so called- jungle while still being enclosedl.
