The Bottom skin is new and the top skin was old, but they look identical. It had 6 inch lines and it turned out perfect. Thanks Guys. Great job. -Barry

Five Star Plus!!! Steve and his company demonstrate what customer service should look like. Thanks so much! -Glenn I recently purchased all of the siding, trim and entry door for an 1970 11’ foot trailer that I rebuilt using only the metal frame of the original trailer. I contacted Steve at Hemet Valley RV and sent him a side view of the trailer with the dimensions on it. Steve figured out what material I needed and the amount and sent it. Everything that I needed I received in a timely fashion and it was packaged in very strong boxes...Thanks so much for the great job Steve, I have no doubt that your business will have continued success, Great Job. -Wayne M.
Extensive knowledge and quality materials. Very fair pricing and quick turn around time. Steve and Tammy are always helpful. -Larry

I think this vintage camper trailer thing may be catching on. The past couple of months have been full of fall rallies. We continue to plan to attend, or at least visit, as many rallies and other events as we can in order to share the stories and images in this magazine. We also rely on associates around the country to send us stories and images from the rallies we can’t get to. As the rally season slows down again for winter, we are looking forward to a Thanksgiving trip (in a vintage trailer) up the Northern California coast with just the family. In addition to attending rallies, Caroline and I hosted the Trailerfest Rally (see page 6.) We also completed our first book in September. It is scheduled to be released in the spring of 2016. It features a wide variety of hobbyists and pictures of their trailers and their stories. I have also been working with the California Automobile Museum on a vintage camper trailers display that will run from November through April (see details on page 44.) I am continuing to work with major insurance carriers to see if we can create policies that make sense for vintage trailer owners. In 2016 we would like to help others around the USA host their own rally. We have a couple of new events that we are working on but we can’t be everywhere. If you want to host a rally, start with the basics: find a location, pick a date and let us know. We will advertise it for you for free! Keep it simple with a yard sale/open house Saturday 10 am to 2 pm and a potluck on Saturday night. The main goal is just to get together with new and old friends. If you want, your rally can stay more of a simple “campout” or grow into caterers, bands, tee-shirts and the rest once you get your feet under you. No matter what you do, you will likely find other trailer nuts near you. We started the Trailerfest Rally five years ago with about 15 friends. With the gratitude and appreciation shown by the 500 attendees last week, all of the work was worth it. Our only disappointment is that we now have a rally that has ran out of room to include everyone. We need your help! I really think this vintage camper trailers thing may be catching on.

Five years ago Trailerfest was 15 friends going camping. This year over 250 trailers registered months in advance to attend the family friendly weekend that began on Thursday with a potluck and classic movies on the big screen. On Friday there was an appetizer party that featured Happy Camper Wines (www.happycamperwines. com). Linda Brown knocked out over 500 cupcakes so everyone could have a sweet treat. At dusk the band “Decades” from Chico, CA exceeded our expectations with song after song from the 1950’s to current tunes. Trailerites danced and sang along with the familiar hits for a couple of hours. Saturday morning the classic car These biking flamingos (left) were responsible for an impromptu bike parade. That means that next year they’re in charge of it! Tony from Bad Bones Photography showed up with the pin up girls to take advantage of a sea of classic cars and vintage trailers to shoot photos with. clubs rolled in to join us for breakfast and pajama clad bicyclists paraded through the park. Open house included “Pink Flamingo RV Radio” doing on the spot interviews for their show (see page 33). All day was busy with admirers perusing the variety of trailers, yard sales and interesting collectibles. Flippin RV’s revealed a trailer and a recent truck restoration. Saturday night was PIEFEST! Sweet Mel’s Pies of Lodi, CA made us 80 pies in a dozen different flavors. After loading up on pie everyone enjoyed an amazing array of talent at the talent show. Sunday morning many met to say goodbye and “get toasted”. The toaster party featured a variety of breads, toasted in mid-century toasters, and spread with house made butters and preserves. It was a busy and fun weekend! See more pictures at www.trailerfestrally.com.
Who knew we had such talent?! The lighting made it difficult to capture all of the great singing and musical acts. I think everyone was surprised too see just how good they all were!

Creating the Ultimate Man Cave How to by: “Heffron’s A Moment In Time Retro Design”
Over the past few months A Moment in Time Retro Design www.Heffrons.com has provided some great “How-To’s” from Metal Banding, Vinyl, and our latest article on how to install laminate. By now you’re probably feeling pretty comfortable taking your love of the 1950’s and implementing it. Many of you have probably done some sort of retro renovations or at the very least planned everything out in your head. For some, your vintage trailer is the center piece for everything you do and when you are reading these guides you are already plotting how you can spice up that camper trailer and make it even better. But at A Moment in Time Retro Design we say, why stop there? That’s why we worked on creating a 1950’s Retro Trailer that was truly one of a kind and then realized there was so much we could do while we were at it. The idea of a Man Cave has been around for as long as we can remember and the possibilities are endless. From your garage, basement, or turning a shed into a backyard mini home or backyard diner. That’s exactly what we did and wanted to share some of the steps and planning that went into making sure this diner was truly represented in the 1950’s. Color Scheme The first thing you’ll want to plan is your color scheme and the look of your Man Cave. In the 1950’s there are some noticeable colors that people focused on. Turquoise was a very popular choice but so were simpler colors like black, white and red. Pastel colors were also very popular during this time period. The combination of pale yellow and pink
8
www.vintagecampertrailers.com
is something you’ve probably seen in many different Retro kitchens along with blue and mint green. Ultimately though the choice is yours on which colors you choose. Flooring When it comes to flooring you have multiple options to consider. Hardwood and carpet flooring are always popular choices and won’t take away from your Retro theme at all. For others though, they will want flooring that you might recognize in a diner in the 50’s such as a red and white or black and white checkered floor. These themes are easy to accomplish using linoleum tiles and can be used in any room in your home, not just your man cave. Furniture and Fabrics Your next decision is what will really separate you from any other Man Cave or Vintage Camper. When it comes to Vinyl and Laminates there are an endless number of options to choose from. Some of the most popular laminates sold at A Moment in Time Retro Design are the boomerang gloss which consists of colors such as Red Glacier, Turquoise Ebony, and Yellow Glacier. Matte colors such as Mint,
Malt, Pop and Retro Diner can also stand out on any table. Of course don’t forget about our Cracked Ice colors either. When it comes to Vinyl your choices escalate even more. At A Moment In Time Retro Design we offer six different grades to choose from for your furniture. From Naugahyde-Stratford, Seabrook, Patriot Plus, Zodiac, Piano, and yes even Cracked Ice. The combinations are truly endless. Once you have your fabrics chosen you can then gather all of the furniture you’ll need from Booths, Stools, Chairs, and Tables. Perhaps the most popular combination in Retro is table set featuring vinyl and chrome chairs matched with the chrome legged tables with the laminate of your choosing.
Neon signs can also be a great way to add excitement to your vintage camper or man cave. There are a variety of neon to choose from such as clocks, signs, sculptures and posters. What better way to brighten up your night and wow your guests?
Retro Decor You’ve got your floors, and you have your furniture, but now your walls look bare. Two of the most popular remedies to this problem are with signage. Tin Signs have been said to be a true visual reflection of the times. When used for advertising these Tin Signs give a brilliant permanence to the product. Today, these signs are a collectible art form.
Wrapping Up These are just a few ways that you can transform a basement, garage and of course your vintage camper into a 1950’s getaway. Don’t be afraid to step outside the box and build on these ideas. Things such as a Jukebox, Retro Murals, and Coca-Cola items are great additions to a project that will really assist with making your project complete. Good luck with your project and remember, for all of your laminate needs head over to www.Heffrons.com. We look forward to hearing from you! (315) 363-7726

The Aquatomic Lounge By Dawn Ventimiglia You’ve heard of renovations. Well, “retrovation” is a “renovation-with-a-retro-look,” and ultimately, how our camper was brought forward to her past. It took us more than two years to find a vintage camper, since they are rare in our part of Virginia. Every inquiry would end up in “it’s sold” disappointment. When the owner of a Yellowstone called to tell us that her prospective buyers had canceled, we immediately jumped in the car and drove four hours to inspect the camper. The day was a blur and included a sick dog and finding arrowheads (that unusual story is in my blog).
When we looked at the trailer, we had already planned to gut the camper to the studs, so seeing a semidismantled interior was a plus, as it allowed us to see leakage issues. But nothing was insurmountable. JohnnyV (my husband) used to own a cabinet shop and build motorcycles and I am a full-time artist (he says he married me for my tools). With our skill sets, we figured we could handle the retrovation and we became the new owners of the 13’ 1966 Yellowstone Cavalier. While JohnnyV drew up interior rebuild plans, I concocted color palettes and idea boards, both of us honoring the Continued on page 44

Stella Rose By Mary Golden
I always wanted to restore a trailer and figured I’d do it “someday.” I’m a very busy nonprofit executive director supporting education and interpretation in our state parks. I was down at the Pismo Beach Vintage Trailer Rally promoting our rally, “Stranded in Morro Bay,” at Morro Strand State Beach the following fall (get it -- Stranded in Morro Bay!). I saw a for sale sign on a cute pink, green and white trailer with custom made green cabbage rose curtains. Those have been my favorite colors since I was a girl! I suddenly real-
16
ized that “someday” was not likely to happen with my busy job, so I knew she had to be mine. My Mom had died the previous winter, and Jean had been the first one to tell me about Sisters on the Fly and helped me plan our first vintage trailer rally. Not long after I got “Stella Rose,” my sister sent me my mom’s only doll. I never knew about this doll. My mom grew up in the Great Depression and had been very poor. She named this precious doll Rosaleanne.
www.vintagecampertrailers.com
Well something just woke up in me. I started researching vintage dolls and fell in love with Madame Alexander. Until I had Stella Rose, I had never had a place where I could unabashedly be a girl. I repainted the interior a soft chalk pink and even painted the curtain rods! I was all in: vintage dolls, lace, china, cats, jewelry and even two horse bridal wedding rosettes! I made yo-yo flowers for strings of lights. I blinged out the kitchen. My husband would walk by and say, “Nice rhinestones!” He rewired a vintage light for the “bedroom.” We have taken her to many of state parks on the Central Coast of CA. My husband cheerfully camps with all my feminine touches. He says it’s like being invited into the “boudoir.” When we aren’t camping Stella lives outside my rose garden, and we often go have a glass of wine and sit and talk.

FLORIDA FRESH I had been a tent camper for many years before deciding to “move up” to a small trailer - I was transferring to Florida and wanted a fun way to see the state so I started looking for a Scotty and after a year’s search found “Blanche”.
18
This camper was lovingly restored from the frame up and had her maiden voyage in Sept of 2014. She was named Blanche after my mother (in the bobble head picture frame) and she share’s my mom’s spirit of travel.

Meet Clark and Sherry Continued from page 12 The Weiss’ search led them back to Southern California to the town where they both grew up. It took a bit of visualizing for them to realize that the Boles was exactly what they were looking for in a vintage camper trailer. After purchasing the trailer, they learned some fun history about how the trailer had spent the first sixty years of its life. 1n 1955 the trailer was set up at the Twenty-nine Palms Marine Corp Training Center as temporary officer’s quarters. The Boles was then occupied by two different primary United States Navy base painters. One of these painters painted the Boles with military grade epoxy and battleship gray paint. As a former United States Naval Officer, Clark felt like he was keeping the Boles “in the family.” When Sherry and Clark began restoring the Boles, they decided to concentrate exactly what on the exterior. They soon realized that they were military grade epoxy and paint do not want to be removed from aluminum. Aflooking for ter trying everything from aircraft paint in a vintage stripper to sanding for hours on end, the Weiss’ realized that the paint was camper trailer not coming off and needed to be painted over. They used Mercedes-Benz Iridium Silver, suggested by Marti Domyancic. They had the trailer professionally painted and are very pleased with the results. The interior needed extensive restoration, but Clark and Sherry were up to the task. They have rebuilt beds, replaced wiring, replaced paneling, curtains and cushions. They were even able to retrofit a modern refrigerator with the door from a vintage refrigerator. Through hours of hard work, the Boles Mir Mar has turned into the camper of their vision. They are now enjoying their trailer as they attend rallies and escape for weekend camping trips.

While on a cross country road trip in 2009, I stopped to take pictures of some vintage Route 66 motels in Seligman, Arizona. I got out of my truck, placed the Supai Motel sign square in my viewfinder, and fell in love. Some people might just see a sign, but I saw a piece of art with history and a gorgeous sense of style. In that very first frame, Retro Roadside Photography was born. Since that day I have traveled more than 100,000 miles chasing neon to document a disappearing culture. With each of my photographs I aspire to increase awareness, appreciation and preservation of these iconic places. By Stefanie Poteet

Peter and Mary Steinert completed the restoration on their 1956 Nash in 2012. The Nash was purchased from the original owners and the Steinerts worked diligently to maintain its originality throughout the rebuilding process. The color combo is the original Nash combination. In 2014, the Steinerts bought their 22ft. 1966 Kenskill from RV Dr. George’s junk pile (Sacramento, CA.) The trailer was full of rot and needed a complete restoration. Peter and Mary were able to take the trailer apart and replace much of the framework followed by replacing the interior paneling and repainting the trailer. Peter took each panel off the trailer and painted it inside his garage paint booth before reattaching the siding on the trailer. Another nice touch is matching upholstery in the car and trailer. The Steinert’s trailer and car combination received a lot of attention at this year’s Trailerfest Rally. The color grabs your attention but the attention to detail is what captivates you. Peter and Mary continue to put the finishing touches on their trailer to bring it up to the same caliber as their incredible car.

Dawn and Dave Kappadahl hosted the Treasure Island, CA Meet and Greet IV. This rally is a special event open to only a handful of trailers. The trailerites are invited to spend the night on Treasure Island while enjoying the view of the San Francisco Skyline. This year’s meet was a great success as the Treasure Island Flea Market customers enjoyed touring and learning about the vintage trailers. The rally attenders enjoyed an appetizer potluck and the crowning of their Trailer Park King Rob Biaggi. The People’s Choice award was won by a 1949 KampMaster Teardrop trailer owned by Mary and John Blackard. Miss Treasure Island Queens Dawnika and Danielle were in attendance to oversee the events festivities.

Rowell Ranch Rodeo’s Cowgirl Picnic By Allison Batteate SOTF#940
This year, Mary Lodge won the Glamping Trip and invited 3 friends; Robin, Michelle, and Rashelle. My co-host Sharon Castello and I arrived early at 49’er Village RV Park in Plymouth, CA to set up. My husband even helped tow one of my trailers up while battling vertigo. I brought my 1960 Red/White Corvette and my 1968 WheelCamper. The ladies enjoyed Orange Wedge Jello Shots, White Russian and 50/50 Pudding Shots, a Bloody Mary Bar along
with many delicious recipes (including Breakfast in a Bag). They were treated to a free VIP wine tasting at Cooper Vineyards including a visit with the owner Mr. Cooper. The ladies each received a gift bag with a Travel Pillow made from retro outdoor girls fabric, a recipe book with all the meals enjoyed over the weekend, along with a few other odds and ends. They enjoyed outdoor movies; The Long, Long Trailer, of course and a Cowgirl Documentary.
The trip must have been a success, because by the end, they were conspiring how they were going to win it again. The Rowell Ranch Rodeo Cowgirl Picnic raises money for scholarships to help girls “with cowgirl spirit” pay for school expenses. The organization has awarded over $5,000 already.

Northern Utah Rally Crystal Hot Springs Honeyville, Utah
Duane and Tharen Blue 1966 Fireball Randy Cummings I would like to thank all the folks that came to the Northern Utah Rally at Crystal Hot Springs Camp in Honeyville, Utah this year. Our attendance was short for several reasons, one being misunderstandings about bookings. Adam, the owner of the park, is aware and will work with us for next year. The good part is that the campers solved the problems of spaces and we still had a great time. The weather was cooler than normal, but that didn’t slow us up. There was a good turnout at the Friday pot luck. Sat. evening was the smoked pork and coleslaw dinner with Dr Mongo providing the music, mostly railroad ballads that were supplemented by the passing train that was a 1/4 mile from the site. We had a nice variety of units, from a Little Loafer to a Motor Coach bus .Open house was pretty busy and I think we were able to get a few more folks interested in dragging their old units out of the bushes to come next year. The people who chipped in to help made things easier than the year prior and the booking glitch was taken in stride. I want to thank all the folks that made it fun. I hope that some members will start a rally nearby because we have so many wonderful sites available. Again, I would like to thank everyone for the help and understanding that made the weekend a pleasure. It’s the members that put the joy in doing this. To all who didn’t make it and to those that did, when registering next year, talk to Adam only when booking.Next year: same time (3rd weekend in September) same place!

“Welcome to Pink Flamingo RV Radio, the Voice of the RV Industry!” Those are the words now being heard at the beginning of each new podcast/radio show that is gaining a listener audience at a rapid pace! And it’s no wonder. There are no other podcast/radio shows covering the RV industry and lifestyle the way Team Pink Flamingo is. When you tune in at any of their locations, you might hear from Paul Lacitinola of “Vintage Camper Trailers Magazine”. Or you might hear about vintage trailer rallies, women’s camping groups such as Happy Camper Girl, roadside attractions to look for, RV sales companies, RV manufacturers as well as a weekly “Care and Maintenance” segment with sponsor, “Unique RV” in Las Vegas. So, who is Team Pink Flamingo? The entire “Team” as of this writing, and from the conception of the show, is the father and son team of Tracy and Austin Miller. As Tracy takes to the microphone each week as the host of Pink Flamingo, Austin is “the master of all-things electronic”, as Tracy puts it. Tracy adds, “It’s great having your son collaborating on every show.” Austin is in his second year of college, pursuing a career as a photographer. His photo skills are put-

to-task on a regular basis shooting RVs on location at events, during interviews, and out the window while traveling. Austin is also the Audio Engineer, recording and editing each show. Finally, Austin turns photographs into slide shows that correspond with each episode. He then uploads the weekly shows to each listening location. Tracy does more than just conduct weekly interviews. With a 15 year background in radio as a producer and co-host, he is constantly on the phone or computer chasing leads for the next story and figuring out an entertaining way to deliver the interview. As Tracy explains, “It can take days or weeks to line-up an interview. One phone call or email can turn into many. However, having an automotive, RV, and mechanical background is usually an instant connection with manufacturers. Knowing what they’re talking about helps.” Tracy has been RVing since a young age, and introduced Austin, also at a young age, to RVs via vintage camping in their 1955 Little Caesar canned ham. As life changed, the guys moved up to a Peterbilt toterhome for pulling their 40’ gooseneck trailer. The toter took the duo everywhere from the west
Father and Son team... Tracy and Austin Miller coast to cross-country trips, camping with the toter in a variety of locations. Tracy and Austin are currently working on a new RV project for Pink Flamingo RV Radio in the form of a vintage 1972 18’ Winnebago Brave motorhome. In collaboration with their friends at Unique RV, the old Winnebago is being converted into a Mobile Studio, to be finished in 1950’s hot rod/custom styling!
As Pink Flamingo RV Radio continues to grow, expect to see Tracy and Austin at more RV events. They were recently invited to be in the Lance Camper space at the annual Pomona RV Show in California, as well as recording at TRAILERFEST in Lodi. You can tune in weekly at: pinkflamingorvradio. com, Facebook, PodOmatic.com, iTunes, and Stitcher! “Thanks for Listening!”

Bringing Her Back to Life By John A. Larsen Like a sad, abandoned puppy awaiting adoption, she sat for years on a back lot in our lake development. A large hole in the doorway was an unwelcoming sight as was the packrat debris piled up against water damaged paneling. But when I stepped inside and looked around I felt a strong pull to take her into our loving care to bring her back to life. When I mentioned this “find to my wife, Diane, she wanted nothing to do with another project. Yet, after 45 years of marriage, I knew her well enough to know that if I could just get her to take a look she would fall head over heals over this charming 1961 Shasta 19’ Deluxe. I was right. We contacted the owner who, unbelievably, offered to give it to us for hauling it off! Feeling guilty about taking it from a stranger, we wrote him a check for $150 to finalize the adoption. The rescue

began with installing new tires that enabled us to tow it to our lake house nearby. As many who are into vintage camping know, there was more to the restoration than we initially imagined. Water damage is the enemy of all vintage campers and there was plenty of it in Angelica, the name we gave her by way of admiring her shiny wings. I removed the entire front of the trailer to replace rotted out framing and water damaged paneling. It was a good thing we opened her up or we would not have been able to replace the refrigerator. A cooler barely clears the narrow doorway. After I patched the floor, Diane went to work on removing old tile and laying down new. She shopped for curtain and

With her trusty sewing machine she also made an awning and some artwork for inside. I tackled the framing, panel restoration, lighting, plumbing, packing wheel bearings and refurbishing the brakes. We sealed seams, painted, and tested systems to prepare for launch. How exciting it was to take our maiden trip to a nearby campsite where we invited several friends over to christen her with a bottle of champagne and enjoy a nice dinner together under the awning! While working on Angelica we joined several organizations to connect with others interested in camping. In the past two years our lives have been enriched by many new friends across various camping communities, including the NOMADS, a non-vintage organization of retired United Methodists
engaged in mission projects. Our first project was in Moore, OK where we were involved in tornado disaster relief. Our Shasta was dwarfed by the large, new rigs belonging to the others on our team. Phase two of our Shasta project is currently underway. It involves fixing up a newly acquired tow vehicle--a 1959 Dodge Custom Sierra Spectator wagon. A California car, it’s pretty rust free but needs some freshening up of the interior. Interestingly, the car is a “spectator” version, so named because it has a back-facing third seat. We think our grandchildren will enjoy that feature some day when we take them along. In their excitement with going camping, they can keep Angelica in their sights while we journey down the road to set up camp.

Boles Aero Rally Continued from page 12 enjoyed clinics on Saturday: • Len and Jane Becwar from Arizona shared Boles history with the group as they knew Mr. & Mrs. Boles very well. • John Vandendries led a clinic on plumbing, battery power, electric, window seals, and changing out the interior door padding on the 40s and 50s Boles. • Jane Becwar conducted a crafts class that was well attended. We learned to make the cutest little boxes out of greeting cards. • Rick Schneblin shared how he transformed his Boles into something to meet their needs. This meant altering the floor plan while maintaining that necessary vintage vibe. Rick Elliott was our official grill master and “oh, my”, that guy can grill! Charlene Cecil was his right hand woman in prep and completion. A team of six ensured all things were taken care of, with Maryann Vandendries and I as wagon mistresses. What a great team! We all really enjoyed having breakfast and dinner together, so for 2016 I’m investing in a dinner bell.

Annual Cindy Ross’ Vintage Trailer Rally Chula Vista, CA By Barbara Shields
It will take more than rain to dampen the fun at this rally! Check in day started out with blue skies and billowy clouds. Towards evening, dark clouds began to form and some campers considered returning home with forecasts of an unseasonably wet weekend. And wet it was. The weatherman said “The storm produced more rain in one day ever”, so a new record was set. A few campers were not going to come because of threatening weather but came anyway and had a wonderful time. The storm made for great conversation and tall tales. Friday morning started with a meet and greet under the “Big Tent” as the rain came down in blinding sheets. Breakfast included wonderfully huge muffins, coffee and fresh squeezed orange juice and sweet grapefruit sections supplied from the private grove of one couple attending the rally. Saturday, heavy rain showers prevailed until mid-afternoon It did not dampen the spirits of the campers. A scavenger hunt kept some contestants puzzled as they tried to find the BLUE BALL placed within one of the trailers in plain sight, but not conspicuously. The idea was to encourage

campers to visit every trailer to find the ball. A “bring an item, take an item” brought out an assortment of great vintage items. A contest for the best trailer depicting the rally theme was judged. Saturday night was rounded out with a wonderful display of finger food goodies complimented with wine and margaritas. Awards were given for the different contests. Sunday morning early risers gathered for a waffle breakfast with strawberries, peaches and whip cream. coffee or tea. MMMM good. A vote was taken from those in attendance Saturday evening to see if the rally should be held again in 2016. It was a resounding YES so hope to see you all again May 12-15, 2016. We have some fun things planned. Those who attended the 2015 rally have probably received the application for the 2016 rally by now There are only 50 sites available but the Park may be able to accommodate a few more. The Aquatomic Lounge Continued from page 14 camper’s birth era. We appreciate mid-century style (heck, WE’RE mid-century). In fact, my art studio is an atmospheric vintage tiki lounge. Picturing an atomic-era interior, we dubbed the tiny trailer: “The Aquatomic Lounge”. We started “gutting the fish” in July, 2013. To keep from getting overwhelmed, we set up a series of goals such as stripping exterior latex paint, removing/polishing trim, painting exterior, replacing rotted studs, rewiring, insulating, installing new birch walls, plumbing, building, staining, and installing cabinetry, and we calculated our halfway point. There were a million “to-do’s” inside each of those goals, too, so checking each item off the list was a step closer to done! One step at a time. Thanks to our generous friends, Colette and Donny, who run a business out of an old school, we were able to work on the camper in their re-purposed gym – a secure indoor shop where we could leave tools set up and come and go as we pleased! In October, 2013, JohnnyV began having serious health issues. After three hospital stays and surgeries in 2014, he could barely walk and couldn’t work. The camper was the last thing on our minds. We are so blessed that he is alive and able to stand on his own two feet now. Little by little, we got back to it. With the help of a couple of friends, JohnnyV gave direction when physically unable to do a task, and we were finally able to bring our little trailer home on August 11, 2015. I quickly finished the outfitting and décor. With huge smiles, we headed out to the camper one night with our dog, got settled in, and listened to the cicadas and tree frogs. Our first campout was special, even though it was just in our driveway!

Almost as soon as the automobile was invented, people started traveling as far as they could with them. Over time, our homes away from home became more elaborate with more conveniences and style. Experience multiple decades of vintage travel trailers and the accouterments that went with them. The exhibit will focus on the 1940s and 50s, but will also include trailers from the 1930s and early 1960s. There will be familiar names and manufacturers such as Airstream, “canned hams” that all visitors can identify with, and a number of limited edition and custom trailers such as one made by famous designer Brooks Stevens. From practical to ostentatious, there will be at least one trailer you wish you could travel in! Exhibit made with support from the Vintage Camper Trailers Magazine
www.vintagecampertrailers.com/campinginstyle
And there was a bonus. We didn’t have to leave the camper for late night “pit stops” because our tiny camper has a Potti! How? We shrunk the rear bed width, widened the wheel well pantry, and voilà – a potti closet utilizing a Porta Potti that JohnnyV had saved from his 70’s vanning days. We omitted a stove, since we cook outdoors, but did install a small microwave (the micro and fridge got paint and 60’s embellishments). There are other subtle touches in the interior which aren’t noticed immediately, but add to the mid-century atmosphere: our pinstriped front door “Tiki Johnny,” a digital frame filled with 60’s style (concept cars, movie posters, ads), the female astronaut doll floating among star lights below the rear shelf, the custom “aged-60’s-birch-cabinets”stain mix, and chrome atomic symbols adorning the front cabinet. For giggles, a motion-sensitive door chime sounds the iconic Star Trek “swoosh” when someone enters (and it’s a hit). The Potti “kloset of kitsch,” has Spy vs. Spy art, an “I’m no rocket scientist” sign, and a vintage postcard of a bouffant-enhanced Miss Armed Forces.
Almost everything is new: wiring, birch walls, insulation, LED lights for power conservation, cabinetry, paint, 110/12V system w/battery, and plumbing. We used her original parts when possible, including sink, doors, rock guard, and window frames. As we envisioned, she’s stylish 60’s with sass. After a long bumpy road, finishing the “retrovation” means much more to us than just finishing a project. It is our testament to perseverance despite the curve balls that life threw at us. Completing “The Aquatomic Lounge” means new beginnings, inside and out, and a chance to enjoy life from a different perspective. If you see us at a campground, stop by and say hello – we might even let you try out the ray gun!
