What our customers have to say about us
We picked up a 62 Shasta trailer and the side looked like a kid took a stick to the side of it. It was bad. We brought the skin to Hemet Valley RV and they Made a new peice. The Bottom skin is new and the top skin was old, but they look identical. It had 6 inch lines and it turned out perfect. Thanks Guys. Great job. -Barry

Five Star Plus!!! Steve and his company demonstrate what customer service should look like. Thanks so much! -Glenn I recently purchased all of the siding, trim and entry door for an 1970 11’ foot trailer that I rebuilt using only the metal frame of the original trailer. I contacted Steve at Hemet Valley RV and sent him a side view of the trailer with the dimensions on it. Steve figured out what material I needed and the amount and sent it. Everything that I needed I received in a timely fashion and it was packaged in very strong boxes...Thanks so much for the great job Steve, I have no doubt that your business will have continued success, Great Job. -Wayne M.
Extensive knowledge and quality materials. Very fair pricing and quick turn around time. Steve and Tammy are always helpful. -Larry
Buttercup By Rebecca Kock - 1971 Shasta Starflyte
My original intention for having a vintage camper was to gather with my quilting friends to have outdoor retreats. I’m not currently a part of any organized quilt/camping group but would love to learn of any that exist or be part of establishing one! That’s the reason there’s a “barn quilt” painted on the rock guard of my Shasta! Having worked and taught at a local quilt shop, here in Northern Indiana, I know of a few others who are restoring campers with the same idea in mind. The other reason I wanted to restore this camper was because I’m a grandma who wants to be available to camp with my kids. Buttercup is also Grandma’s “Happy Place” where young ones can come visit and take some quiet time away from the usual group of families their parents play with. Having retired from a 32 year career as an Art teacher, I keep a supply of the usual craft and drawing materials that keep children engaged in creative exploration. Throw in a snack and a walk in the woods and this is proving to work quite well! Memories are being made and I am loving it! ragsnrelics@hotmail.com

We stumbled into this hobby when we bought a cheap 1962 DeVIlle to go camping with our kids. It needed a light restoration so we resealed the windows, put in new flooring, curtains and figured out how to grease the bearings. We didn’t know it then, but we were the owner/builders of our first (of many) vintage camper trailers. Many people that we meet at rallies have a similar story. Due to the rapid growth in popularity of the hobby, more and more people are looking for a vintage trailer that they can restore themselves. All of the trailers in this issue of the magazine were restored by their owners. From an 19 year old girl, to retired couples and families. Some with no experience and some with experience they bring from related hobbies like home improvement or car and motorcycle building/restoring. Some do it themselves because of budgetary reasons, others, for the personal pride of completing the project. There is even one that will be sold to a new owner that may not have the skills or time that it takes to transform a 50 year old travel trailer into a rally ready, safe and comfortable trailer. Input from readers for future magazine features is welcome. We want to see your pictures and hear your funny, historical, informative, interesting or inspiring story of vintage camping. If you have some great photos and can write 500 to 1000 words (or share your story with us and we can write it), we want to hear from you. 5-10, bright , clear, original hi-rez, original photos. We have some focus issues of the magazine coming up. If you have any input for these issues In particular please send them our way ASAP. • Airstreams/Silver Twinkies • Barn Finds/Original Owners • Home Builts/Gypsy Wagons • Motorhomes/RV’s Even if your trailer doesn’t exactly fit in to one of these categories we still want to see what you are up to. Little Miss Penny By Brooke Bickler My name is Brooke Bickler. I am a college student. I am now 20, but was 19 years old when I started rehabbing / restoring / rebuilding or as I like to call it “reviving” vintage trailers. I’ve grown up around antiques and vintage things my whole life, including vintage trailers, which my family and I would go camping in almost every weekend as a kid. Eventually we upgraded to newer trailers with a few more upgraded amenities, though my love and admiration for caravans and vintage trailers has never ended. At the beginning of this year, I found this little 1969 Shasta compact on Craigslist. On the phone the owner had made it sound like it was a “fine dime.” It felt almost too good to be true, because the owner was only

asking $400. Although the type of condition it was in didn’t matter to me because I tend to find a great deal of potential in many things people would consider to be “trash.” I am also pretty experienced using power tools. After driving a couple of hours to buy the 1969 “fine dime,” my father and I arrived to find the owner frantically globbing on caulking and nasty old chunky house paint all over the trailer. As if it were going to hide the vast amount of problems that this “fine dime” had! Not only was he frantic, he was also hesitant in allowing me to even look inside the trailer. I became frustrated with the owner, but I finally made my way inside. It was nowhere near being a fine dime; it was more like a penny. Despite the all-around poor condition (and evidence of drugs inside) I saw the trailer had potential and I knew I could make that penny shine. Little did I know after exchanging the money and pink slip that I had just bought myself an unlucky penny. As we hooked the trailer up to our car, all of a sudden one of the tires valve stem came shooting out, leaving us with a flat. Luckily there was a spare, but the unluckiness didn’t end there. On our way home with the trailer following along, my worries became focused on the trailer lights not working. We started to hear an unusual sound from the trailer, then a loud “CRUNCH!” It sounded like a car crash. I looked back
It was in rough shape; there was no framing left inside from water damage and dry rot. I realized the little Shasta was actually a very “lucky penny” to have made it home.

thinking someone hit my trailer, but what I saw was that the entire front of the trailer had collapsed. The aluminum paneling had split and folded over, causing the window to shift to the side. We pulled over, but the damage was already done. All we could do at that point was tow the poor unlucky Shasta home - nice and slow and hope for the best. From then on we drove a maximum speed of 30mph on a 60mph one-lane highway. Needless to say, we caused a long line of angry drivers. Nevertheless the little unlucky penny had made it home. It was in rough shape; even more than it was before. Then I discovered that there was no framing left inside from water damage and dry rot. I realized the little Shasta was actually a very “lucky penny” to have made it home in the condition that it did. Thus being how she got her name Little Miss Penny and my inspiration to tile the counter top with over 2,500 pennies. I originally wanted to use only pennies minted in 1969, but after cleaning the bank out of all its pennies and searching through the jars of pennies that friends and family donated to me, I didn’t have one 1969 penny. I began asking my classmates if they had any and my professors even joined in on the search. I eventually ended up with 5 pennies made the same year my trailer was made. Not enough to do the entire counter with, but 5 was better than none. The entire trailer had to be rebuilt. I had an ugly, empty, collapsed trailer with nothing original left inside. So I decided to give Penny her own originality and a fun personality, with a whole new spacious layout inside, and a fun paint job outside. My father helped whenever he had a day off from work, but for the most part I built or innovated almost everything else. I have become obsessed with vintage trailers. I plan on keeping Penny, but have just completed and sold a 1973 Field and Stream to help pay for college tuition and books. I have a 1952 Cardinal, which I plan on “reviving” next, along with a 1958 Shasta Airflyte, to also help pay for school. I have had so many people say to me that they see no point in saving the trailers that are in such bad shape. Proving them wrong is only one satisfaction I get out of saving the rough ones. Because of their bad condition, they may not be fully original; but nevertheless, they are an important part of history. There is nothing I love and enjoy more than working on an old trailer. If others feel the same way about having their own vintage trailers to love and enjoy camping with family and friends, then it is well worth saving them all. Here is a link for more photos of Penny, and my other trailers. http://bicklerbrooke.wix.com/brookeann#!vintage-trailer-restoration-/cmf8

Taking time out from building award winning motorcycles, Jimmy Evans found time to put together this 1956 Zenith. As usually happens, it turned in to a bigger project than he expected. Ultimately he ended up taking it down and rebuilding it with shear plywood walls. Jimmy had previously built Cheryl a Shasta in this fashion and they like the insulation and sound deadening it provides.

Jimmy’s custom touches include hinged fender-well covers to allow for easy access to change a tire. New halogen tail lights and Jimmy’s custom paint make this one sparkle.
The interior features the original floor plan including the freestanding Dixie stove and Marvel refrigerator. (The fridge was professionally refinished inside and out.) Modern amenities include a new water heater, flat screen TV and working bathroom. This fresh build was already up for sale when we shot the photos. Tourette Trailer Unlike most teardrops, it’s not built of wood. It’s all riveted aluminum, like an Airstream. By Steve Walker
Steve’s teardrop coming back home.
My dad found my teardrop at the swap meet under the W-X Freeway in Sacramento back in 1987. I had always wanted a Teardrop. This one was in pretty good condition and previous owners had replaced the wood floor. All the rest is aluminum so it can’t rot. The teardrop even has the original tent that snaps on the back to make a second room. I’ve used that once. I paid $350 and since then we’ve been all over the western states. I didn’t even know what make it was until I had owned it many years. It’s registered as a ’71 SPCNS which it obviously is not. This is no homemade trailer. Unlike most teardrops, it’s not built of wood. It’s all riveted aluminum, like an Airstream. It’s also a bit wider as it has no fenders and has fender wells instead. It’s probably the best teardrop trailer ever produced. After I had owned the teardrop for probably 15 years, I was coming back from a trip to the Grand Canyon when some guy flagged me down. Once we had both pulled off the highway he told me that he had the same trailer and that it’s a Tourette built by the Universal Trailer & Manufacturing Co. of Kansas City, Missouri. They were built in the ‘40’s and early ‘50’s. He later sent me a copy of an original ad. I used the teardrop for years just as I got it. I never even changed a tire until I had a blowout on Hwy. 101 late one miserable night. We went everywhere. We went all up and down the coast and the Sierra. We stayed in the parking lot at Sierra Ski Ranch so we could get up early to ski. Crossing the Nevada Desert proved just how well this trailer tows at high speed. We went considerably over the speed limit on Hwy 50 and I could hardly tell it was back there. We went to a bunch of different music festivals. The teardrop was always the center of the camp. Everyone else would bring their tent and I would back the teardrop right into the center of camp because it had the kitchen. That kitchen was just a shelf for the Coleman Stove at first, but by the 90’s I did a total kitchen remodel where I added a stove, oven, refrigerator and running water. When I bought the water tank, I told the guy at the trailer shop that I was going to install it above the sink so I wouldn’t need a pump. He insisted I buy a pump. I assured him that gravity would do the job and he swore I would be back to buy the pump. I never bought the pump. By the early 2000’s I finally got around to spiffing up the outside. I replaced the taillights, door handles, etc. and actually polished it. Wow, what a difference that made!

to two years before. It seems she had never gotten it registered in her name and now she was moving and needed to sell the teardrop. However, not having title, presented a bit of a problem, for her.
We went on a bunch more trips, but in recent years I started longing for some of the creature comforts of a full size travel trailer like say, a table to sit at and the biggie, a toilet! So, I bought a ’71 Aristocrat LoLiner and sold the teardrop. I had this strange idea that I couldn’t own more than one travel trailer. I surely don’t know how that got in my head as I’ve certainly never had that philosophy with cars. The Aristocrat was nice, but it just didn’t shine like the teardrop so I sold it and bought a ‘64 Airstream. I love my Airstream but I’ve always regretted selling the teardrop. The Airstream is great but the teardrop is “the teardrop”! It’s not replaceable. I may not want to use it every time I go camping, but it is still the ideal trailer for some of the time and it is so very cool. I’ve owned it over half my life so it’s got a lot of memories tied up in it. In the two years it was gone, I watched eBay and Craig’s List and came to realize what a nice teardrop I had had. The Tourette really is about the best teardrop ever built and mine was in pretty good shape with some great improvements. But, it was gone and I figured it was gone for good. That is until I got a call one day from the lady I had sold it
When I sold her the teardrop I signed a bill of sale and told her I would sign whatever else she might need so she could get it registered in her name. She agreed and that was the last I had heard of her until she called two years later. To make a long story short, after a few weeks of talking and my attempting to get a duplicate title, I bought my teardrop back.
I’ve got my little teardrop back and I couldn’t be happier. I took it to the state fair, towed behind my ’35 Ford Pickup and it was the hit of the car show. It’s such a relief to have my teardrop home.
...it was gone and I figured it was gone for good.

This trailer was purchased in April 2015 after looking high and low. As luck would have it, I found the little trailer just one city over. After the deal was made with the fellow Canned Ham/ Vintage trailer enthusiast, he told me what he knew of the trailers history. As he was driving home through the back road of Denver, Colorado, he spotted the little trailer out in a vacant field. The little trailer was pretty weathered and sun beaten. The owner said it had been sitting in the field under a tree for the last 25 years untouched. After purchasing the trailer the man wired up some tail lights and aired up two different size tires and towed it home to California. One month later I purchased it and wheeled it home. At first glance, I really thought I got a good deal and a simple fix. As I got into the simple fix and started to remove small pieces, those pieces began to get larger and larger. When I stopped to see what I had unwrapped and saw that I had the entire front end removed and looked at what I had left to remove, I then realized that this was not going to be a simple fix. As I continued the removal of water damage and wood rot, I realized that this was going to be a frame off restoration. Working on the trailer on a part time basis, it took me a total of 7 months to get it to what you see today. I am very proud of what I have accomplished. There were a few times as I sat in the uncompleted trailer By Rudy M. Hernandez, Owner and wondered if I was ever going to finish. Throughout my endeavor I made 35 videos of my work and the restoration of this little trailer. You can find them on my Youtube channel. Go to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wrjOz0Vryb4

A Stake-Side Teardrop and Barbara Milazzo is a go getter. While traveling, she picked up a couple of books to read on her airplane ride. They were books about vintage camper trailers. She was hooked on the idea of traveling with one. Before she made it home, she had looked on Craigslist, found a unique teardrop for sale, made an offer and bought a 1940 Homebuilt Teardrop from the family of the original owner/builder. Many of the galley items were original, including tin plates and pots, a kettle, and the Coleman stove. The nephew remembered using the trailer when he would visit his great aunt and uncle in San Francisco, CA. Unfortunately, the barn that the teardrop had been parked in for over forty years, leaked. The leak caused some damage to the canvas top and delaminated portions of the plywood, but that didn’t stop Barbara. 20
www.vintagecampertrailers.com
Barbara had not told her parents about her spontaneous purchase, and decided she should let them know after it had been dropped off at her home. She called and told them she had a confession. Come to find out, Barbara’s father had seen the trailer on the flatbed going through their neighborhood and had almost driven off the road trying to get a better look. He had mumbled under his breath that someone was sure lucky to have purchased such a great piece of history. As soon as Barbara’s parents realized she was the lucky owner, they sped over to see her acquisition. Barbara’s dad said it was one of the best things she had ever done. That is saying a lot as Barbara is well known as a teacher and a peace activist who helped stop the nuclear buildup in the U.S. and Russia in the 80’s.
“Alfie” Designed and built by Alfred Araldi in San Francisco, CA. circa; 1939 Making the trailer safe for modern highways, reinforcement steel plates and shock absorbers were added.
Utility Trailer Wanting to maintain the trailer’s originality, Barbara studied how the trailer was first made. She duplicated several of these techniques and made her own stain and wax from turpentine, bee’s wax, linseed oil, and alcohol. She researched how to stop the mold from spreading and patched and sealed the canvas top. An EBAY search provided new old bearings and races from a barn in Nebraska for the 1932 Chevy truck axle. Barbara kept the mattress original as well when she stuffed a canvas bag with cedar chips and straw. After finishing the teardrop, Barbara took it back and shared the restored trailer with the original family. They had tears in their eyes as they recalled the trailer looking like it did in their memories.

But with an old booth and some fresh vinyl, we can create that same look to impress your friends and family. There are a lot of different styles to make, but the two most popular we’ll be examining today are the “Tuck and Roll Channels” and the “Diamond Pattern Tufting”.
Next we need to decide how wide our channels should be. This will vary depending on the size of your booth but a generic size seems to be 3” wide. Be sure to leave some extra material on each end and draw lines 3” apart and perpendicular to the top and bottom edge of the backing. Once you know your channel sizes, you will want to use an X-Acto knife to cut out foam in similar measurements. The vinyl will be next to measure and you’ll want this to be slightly larger than the fabric that you measured out earlier.
Getting Started Before we dive into upholstering our booths we need to make sure our materials and tools are together. The first decision should be the type of fabric you’re going to use. You’ll want vinyl that is going to match the scene that this booth will be placed in. We offer 10 different grades to choose from with a variety of options such as Cracked Ice (on facing page), Seaquest and Stratford. Below is a list of a few tools that you’ll need for these projects. Please note that some will only be used for one project and you may not need it for the other. Give the guides a quick once-over so you know which ones you’ll need.

To accomplish this style of upholstery you will need the vinyl of your choosing, foam, and a stiff muslin fabric for backing.
Lay the vinyl piece on top of the fabric backing and thread the sewing machine from the right edge of the vinyl to the first marked area on the right edge of the backing. Once the seam has been created you will want to lay the foam between the backing and the vinyl and sew the backing and vinyl together along the next marked line. Repeat the process of laying down the foam and vinyl and securing them until your channels have been created. Sew the backing to the vinyl on the top and bottom and smooth out the vinyl along the beveled edges while sewing.
Diamond Pattern Tufting As with the tuck and roll channels, you’ll want to measure the furniture. Cut a piece of ply wood to fit the top and also cut a piece of foam the same size as the ply wood. Start creating your diamond patterns by marking straight lines in your foam and then alternate to create the diamonds. Next drill holes in the foam. Make sure you push the button on the drill before you start as you don’t want the foam to get caught on the drill bit and create any large rips or holes. To make the holes larger you can use a piece of pipe that has a sharp edge and put it into the foam where your holes are. This will create enough room for your buttons. Set the foam on top of the ply wood and be sure to mark where the tufts will be. Drill holes into the ply wood to match the tuft pattern. It’s best to make the holes big enough to get your needle through the ply wood but also not too big to create challenges when securing the tufts.
Basic Tools and Supplies Vinyl of your choice, Sewing machine and/or sewing supplies, Heavy fish line, Foam padding, Stiff muslin, fabric, Staple Gun, Drill, Cotton
Cut holes where each tuft will be and lay your fabric on the foam. Be sure to have enough fabric. In some cases you’ll probably want to use a piece of fabric that is twice as big as the foam area. Finally it’s time to begin tufting. You’ll want to start at the middle of your board and work your way out. Cover your buttons with fabric and put the button onto your straight tufting needle. Get the fabric deep into the foam and make sure the needle goes directly into the center of each hole. Get the button down until it is almost touching the ply wood.
Wrapping Up
Secure each button on the underside of the board by pushing down on the button from the top and tying the fish line. For this you can use a small ball of cotton as the cotton prevents the fish line from going back up through the holes.
There you have it. Like with any project, you’ll want to take your time when first attempting these styles. We also found a couple great videos on Youtube that might help you visually see the steps as you’re reading this guide.
Finally pull the fabric tight around the back and secure it with a staple gun. It’s important to make sure that your diamonds are even while stapling.
Good luck with your projects and remember, for all of your retro furniture needs head over to www.Heffrons.com or call us 315-363-7726. We look forward to hearing from you!

Project Boomerang Put on your poodle skirts! Make some milkshakes! Stack up those 45s! Wilsonart, a leading manufacturer of decorative engineered surfaces for 60 years, has teamed up with home design bloggers Pam Kueber and Kate Battle of RetroRenovation.com to introduce Retro Renovation® by Wilsonart, seven new colorways of boomerang laminate designs. Developed to coordinate with both vintage materials and new products available in classic retro colors, the seven new colorways were designed to appeal to the growing number of homeowners who want to bring popular colors from the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s into their kitchens and bathrooms. Finding small-scale, tone-on-tone, abstract pattern laminates in a variety of retro colors has been a particularly vexing problem for Retro Renovators, until now. The new boomerang designs, part of Wilsonart’s Virtual Design Library (VDL) “Retro” category, combine with other abstract shapes in the following colorways.

About Retro Renovation Founded by mid mod mad journalist Pam Kueber in 2007, RetroRenovation.com and today attracts more than 325,000 unique visitors each month – enthusiastic fans of midcentury and vintage design who are looking for products and ideas to help remodel, renovate and decorate their homes in a way that is sympathetic to the original architecture. The site’s top goal is to help readers find the often hard-to-find products they need.
Seven New Colorways Created for Decorating in Midcentury & Vintage Styles Retro Renovation® First Lady Pink
A warm pink color popularized by Mamie Eisenhower in the 1950s, super popular in pink bathrooms and great for a sweetheart kitchen, too. Retro Renovation® Delightful Jade Inspired by vintage jadeite milk glass, a beloved color and collectible among retro enthusiasts. Retro Renovation® Créme Caramel A delicious pale golden yellow background with butterscotch boomerangs. This colorway looks great with wood cabinetry. Retro Renovation® Rock ‘n’ Roll Ruby The only design that is not tone-on-tone, this one is a bold retro design inspired by diners with waitresses on roller skates. Retro Renovation® Aqua Ripple A soft, retro aqua that also plays well with blue. Retro Renovation® Nostalgic Gray A warm, relatively light gray that would work well as a neutral or with colorcoordinated tiles or décor. Retro Renovation® Friendly Beige A warm, light rosy-beige also intended as a neutral.

Giddy-Up-Go The Rest of the Story 1967 Covered Wagon
Carla and Arkie (Robert) Beaver of Sullivan, MO are part of the “Midwest Glampers” group and longtime subscribers and supporters of this magazine. As often happens, I learn as much from the readers as we try to share with them in each issue. I have always envisioned this magazine as being “of the people” and rely on the thousands of vintage trailer admirers, collectors and dreamers to contribute interesting information regarding the hobby. The variety is what makes it interesting.

Here is an email the Vintage Camper Trailers Magazine received from the Beavers: “We have been subscribers since your first few copies (when it was still a tabloid newspaper). It’s come a long way (since then) and is my favorite item in the mailbox! Just loved your Jan/Feb issue with 37 Covered Wagon article. Didn’t know if you were aware of the “rest of the story” on Covered Wagons… “ We came across our 1967 Covered Wagon for sale and purchased it in January 2015. We have made our own modifications but have left 80% basically original. We just HAD to go with a Western Theme design and have probably the only camper in the world with its own “saloon doors”. This information can be corroborated by an authority on industry history, Al Hesselbart and information from the RV Hall of Fame Museum: World War II changed operations at Covered Wagon greatly, as it converted its production efforts to wartime needs. The company produced truck cargo bodies and was granted the Army-Navy “E” award for high achievement in war production in the spring of 1945. Additionally, forty-two Covered Wagon employees served in the armed forces during the war and one was killed in action in the Pacific. Following the Allied victory in Europe, the War Department decreased its order for truck bodies from Covered Wagon.
The company was apparently idled in mid-1945. By September of that year the plant was leased to the Ironrite Ironer Company, and by December, 1945, Ironrite ironers (and not travel trailers) were rolling off the assembly line. Covered Wagon officials expressed their intentions to resume trailer production after re-evaluating the company’s position, but this never occurred. The Covered Wagon Company passed into the pages of Mount Clemens history.
The second generation Covered Wagon Trailer Company operated in Elkhart, IN from 1958 through the late 1960’s
In 1958 Herbert Reeves Jr. visited the Arthur Sherman family and acquired the rights to the name and logos of the Covered Wagon Company. It had been the largest manufacturer in the industry and the first national giant. Reeves reestablished the Covered Wagon brand as a travel trailer manufacturer. He owned and operated the second generation Covered Wagon Trailer Company in Elkhart, IN from 1958 through the 60’s establishing several industry firsts such as developing the sewer line storage in the rear bumper and the rear access storage trunk. Reeves sold the manufacturing company in 1965 and it apparently produced “Covered Wagons” for a few more years. Reeves then opened the Arrowhead Park Campground in southern Michigan. With his widely varied career now over 30 years old, Herb Reeves was recognized for his years of dedicated service to the growth of the industry by induction into the RV/ MH Hall of Fame in the class of 1979. Lo Liner The vintage trailer Dave and Kim Powell purchased in October of 2014 was in need of a total rebuild. There was wood rot in all four corners. However, the metal skin on the outside of the trailer was in good condition. Wanting to preserve that, it was removed before the restoration was started. Dave and Kim then got right to work. Leaving the kitchen and closet in place for support, Kim started ripping up the floors so they could be replaced. Then she used a heat gun and removed all the fake wood grain in the trailer. Dave started constructing the wood work one corner at a time. After Dave finished the wood construction,
