Five Star Plus!!! Steve and his company demonstrate what customer service should look like. Thanks so much! -Glenn I recently purchased all of the siding, trim and entry door for an 1970 11’ foot trailer that I rebuilt using only the metal frame of the original trailer. I contacted Steve at Hemet Valley RV and sent him a side view of the trailer with the dimensions on it. Steve figured out what material I needed and the amount and sent it. Everything that I needed I received in a timely fashion and it was packaged in very strong boxes...Thanks so much for the great job Steve, I have no doubt that your business will have continued success, Great Job. -Wayne M.

OCEAN MESA RALLY Photographs by Richard Rajewski

80 pre-1975 vintage trailers got together for the 5th Annual Ocean Mesa Vintage Trailerists’ Rally in Santa Barbara, CA in March 2016. The rally is hosted by Liz and Barry Marks and Denny and Stuebe Kennedy. Friday night was a cocktail Luau style reception and Photo Booth to get the party started. Saturday night was a Polynesian Style dinner. Campers “pot-lucked it” by bringing the side dishes, salads and desserts. This annual event sells out quick so make your reservations for next year early!

The trailer is fully self-contained with a shower, toilet and custom lighting. You can be in the middle of nowhere and still cook, enjoy a cold beverage, or turn on the whisper quiet A/C without turning

on a noisy generator. You can take a hot shower, watch TV, “spin some vinyl” and even turn on the fireplace (running on battery power.) With all of the fantastic amenities at this rally you may only be in the trailer to sleep after enjoying one o f several swimming pools, a car show or one of the three live bands! 1971 AIRSTREAM

Classy Classic Our story started two and half years ago when my wife and I, along with another couple, rented an Airstream Bambi. We fell in love with the idea of Glamping. Arriving back home, my friend went out and bought a new 23ft. Flying Cloud Airstream. I thought it would be more interesting to buy a classic Airstream that I could restore. I started looking on line for a 19701975, 25ft.-27ft. Airstream trailer. I had no luck finding anything for sale that fit my requirements. One afternoon I went to see my son in Ventura, CA and we started to look around to see if we could find my desired trailer. After driving through a few trailer parks I did not find anything that was suitable for restoration. I decided to head back to Los Angeles but because it was a very clear day, I said to my son “let us go to the cross.” If you know Ventura, CA you

10

know that it is a great look out on the top of the mountain. I was driving on the small one way street on the back of the mountain when suddenly my son said, “Papa, Airstream!” We stopped, and there it was: two Airstreams, one a 1947 and one a 1971 sitting in a back yard, waiting to be restored. After I got the attention of the owner, I had to negotiate for over an hour for him to agree to sell the 1971 Airstream to me.

my wife and I decided on the layout, I began the removal of the original cabinets, kitchen, bathroom and floor. When the trailer was gutted I realized it was a huge project, and I did not have the time nor the knowledge to go any further. I contacted C & G Trailer Services in Bellflower, CA who specialize in Airstream restorations. Under my direction and supervision they started little by little to restore the beauty of this American icon. The process lasted almost ten months. My wife and I brought back Every Wednesday I would Artwork by Pierre the trailer to our home and go to the shop and see the that was the beginning of the remodel. progress. I had the privilege of finding I started to draw a scaled plan at 1 inch the best craftsmen in the hobby and per foot. 1947 Alma By Justin Heim

Eight Months and 800 Hours

I purchased the 1947 Alma in early Oct. 2014. I bought it from Dan at vintagecampers.com in Brazil, Indiana. She was pretty rough. Duct tape was plastered on the front corners holding it together. Blue paint was covering the entire camper, the exterior trim on the corners and Masonite separations was covered with a sticky roofing tape and then painted over. Mildew covered the walls on the interior and being a Masonite and not sealed correctly when it was originally built and the fact that it is almost 70 years old, the trailer waved at everything and everybody as you passed by it on the outside. However the best part of the trailer is that from what I could tell it was mostly all still there even the corn cob light

by the front door, and the fact that it still existed is saying something. I live in Evansville, IN. It’s about a 5 hour drive when you are NOT pulling a camper that hasn’t seen a road in 40 years. The tires looked like they came off of a couple old farm trucks, log wagons, and anything else that had bald tires and needed the newest old tires they could find. Surprisingly, they were all holding air. We threw some temporary tow lights on her and off we went. My father-in-law made the trip with me so we could look at the other campers on Dan’s property. A mile down the road I already had a door swinging open. I thought to myself, “well this is going to be a long trip”. After filling up and tying the door back we made it all

I am proud to say that my hands were the only hands to work on this camper.

the way to downtown bumper to bumper traffic in Indianapolis before we had our next big problem. What we thought was someone else having a problem with there vehicle turned out to be us flat spotting a tire because a drum brake had locked up on the camper. I drug the camper down and exit ramp and out of traffic with the tire howling and smoking like crazy!!!. I thought for sure I blew the tire after dragging it 100 yds. After backing the camper up about 10 ft. It must have un-lodged the brakes that were blown apart in the drum because the wheel was free again. Besides the severe flat spot in the tire that shook the entire F250 pulling it, we were back on the road just trying to make it home with the camper in as few pieces as possible.

On the 5th day of Oct 2014, I backed the camper into the pole barn I was going to work on her in. On May 10th, 2015, after over 800 hours of work, she was 95% complete and ready to go camping. I am proud to say that my hands were the only hands to work on this camper. A buddy helped me for an hour or so the first day to tear off some Masonite siding. My wife helped me for a couple hours do some cleaning at one point. My mother in law made the curtains. And that is it. Everything was completed by myself. And the rest is history, I wish the walls could talk because the story I got from Dan’s family at vintagecampers.com was that the trailer traveled with the Circus back in the 40’s and 50’s and 60’s. Amazing it survived.

Facts About Bedding Thread Counts There is a LOT of misconception and confusion about what thread count is “best.” While many consumers believe “the higher the thread count, the better,” this is not necessarily true!

By Alicia Dixon, Director of Sales & Marketing, AB Lifestyles Thread count refers to how many threads are running horizontally (the warp) and vertically (the weft) in one square inch of fabric. To achieve a thread count of higher than 400, super fine threads are twisted together and then woven to create fabric. Over time, with use and laundering, these twisted threads can begin to break apart from each other. The result is thin places in your sheets because the fabric is not woven as tightly as it once was. For this reason, textile experts generally agree that single threads woven together result in better fabrics.

AB Lifestyles uses single pick, 100% cotton for the all cotton sheets we manufacture for our AB Lifestyles line. The cotton used in our sheets is Pima cotton, (sometimes called Supima) which is grown here in the US. The thread count of our cotton sheets is 300. We chose this fabric for our 100% cotton sheet sets because it is US grown, and it combines affordability, softness and durability. We have found this cotton produces an extremely nice quality sheet that has a soft, luxurious

feel, but is also durable and will hold up to daily use and many, many washings for several years. HOW you launder your sheets IS an important factor in how long they will last. We recommend washing them separately from other items – especially towels! You can learn more about proper care of your sheets in the “Tips and Tricks” section of AB Lifestyles website at www.ablifestyles.net And a digital copy of this article is available there as well!

1957 DeVille

we should probably keep it in the family From Ken & Meredith Jacobs Our DeVille was purchased by my uncle in 1957. He bought it new and lived in it while working in Page, Arizona, as a highscaler on Glenn Canyon Dam. There was nothing in Page at that time but a large trailer park for the workers with a dining hall, showers/restrooms and lots of sand. He passed away several years back and my cousin had the trailer for a while. He asked me if I wanted it, and that we should probably keep it in the family. I’ve had the trailer for over 20 years and we have used it during that time. I’ve often sat at the dining table thinking about my uncle living in the DeVille. It was a place to hang his hat and sleep after a long day, maybe play a few hands of cards with a co-worker and, most likely, throw back a few adult beverages.

Highscalers in 1957 The trailer was generally in good shape, but needed some attention after all the years. This trailer reflects the typical canned ham style with all the regular features. The kitchen galley is on the opposite wall of the single entrance door. There is a three-burner gas stove and oven, an ice box and a sink. There is a wide front window and jalousie windows on the remaining sides. The woodwork in the interior is of quality birch paneling that gives an enduring look. Overhead lockers and cabinets provide sufficient space for a small family. Amazingly, given the size of the trailer, there is a lot of storage space. For the most part, our trailer is in its original condition, with the original sink, ice box, stove/oven, light fixtures,

windows, awning and paneling. Due to water damage, we had the rear wood panel section replaced. At the same time we had all the windows re-screened and sealed, the bed pedestal repaired and a new mattress made, new flooring installed, the LP system upgraded, the electrical rewired and the water system re-plumbed. Finishing touches included installing a new outer skin and a new paint job keeping the original graphics. Even today our beautiful 1957 DeVille trailer attracts attention everywhere it goes. The trailer restoration work was done by Flyte Camp in Bend, Oregon.

Silver Streak Sabre 17’

From Bob and Mary Groshong- Elliott Photography by Steve Walser We named this trailer “Lil’ Silva” with a convenient rear kitchen and bathroom. It’s fully self-contained with toilet and shower. The trailer is very light weight at 2,250 lbs. My very favorite part of this trailer is the original Continental kit covering the spare tire plus that sparkling shine was what sold me on this trailer. We’ve made lots of improvements to “Lil’ Silva” in the 6 years we’ve owned her. We’ve installed a Zip Dee Awning, new propane refrigerator but used the aqua panel from the original on the front so it still matches the original aqua stove. We put in a tank less propane hot water heater, new propane Wave 3 heater, 12V Fantastic fan, beautiful custom cabinet work with dovetails and inlaid woods

plus custom drawers. We have a side gaucho couch and we like to leave the front table booth made down and have included back cushions which all resembles a L shaped sectional. This arrangement will seat up to 7 people in this small space for conversation and cocktails! We are very comfortable in this small Silver Streak even while dry camping. We have two 12 volt batteries on the front tongue and have all LED lighting.

My Pick of Pismo By Paul Lacitinola Pismo Beach, Trailerfest and Buellton rallies are some of the larger events in California and attract a lot of recently restored vintage trailers. Collectors and restorers often debut their work at these events for all of the admirers and dreamers. This year at Pismo in May was no different. Droves of people came out for the “open house” just to see what others had either found or fixed-up. Over the years of attending these rallies I’ve become acquainted with Scott Berud of Bakersfield, CA, (pictured below). Scott is frequently at these events with his latest find; restored to preserve its past and immaculately appointed with period décor. Scott’s trailers and style always appeal to me and inspire my own projects. Scott out-did himself this year. Combining a 1952 Boles Aero Montecito with a collection of mid-century collectible camping, hunting and fishing gear, he created “Arnie’s Sporting Goods”. The result is a rolling collection of memorabilia displayed in a retail store setting

reminiscent of how a sporting goods shop of the 1950’s may have looked. Inside and out this piece takes you back and includes such a variety of merchandise that you can get caught up admiring all of the items that you may have actually found in a sporting goods store when you were a kid. This trailer was a crowd favorite at the rally and surprisingly Scott had “Arnie’s” up for sale. It didn’t take long for a couple of collecContinued on page 29

In a preventive move the owner had added asphalt roofing and indeed the trailer doesn’t leak. The wheels with the original pin striping also have their original baby moon hubcaps. The water tank is copper and features a gas tank filler cover. The 1947 license plate is the original plate. Simplicity is the key. The top cabinets are held open with the little wood brace, and the counter-top above the stove is held above the stove by the tension of wedging it against the shelf above the stove. The entry door is held open by holding the door lever down under the little stopper on the body.

I became aware of this trailer while bargaining with the owner for his 1955 Nash Rambler station wagon. In the process he mentioned that he also had a trailer. When I asked where it was he said “Right behind that wall.” He then explained that the trailer was parked next to his house, where he later built an extra room on the other side of the trailer so that the door of the trailer and new room matched up. Then he roofed over both structures and added siding on the front. Thus this trailer had been in

26

the house until it was removed in 2001. The plaque near the door identifies it as being made near Los Angeles in 1946 with the serial number 399. I later tracked the trailer down and made the deal to own it. The trailer has its original linoleum flooring, Masonite counter-tops, ice box, wood grained paper over Masonite ceiling, red squeezer cabinet latches, and two burner stove. I’ve had the couches recovered using the original springs, re-stained the

My goal has been to preserve the integrity of the original builders, to clean and bring components back to functionality, and to respect its survival by leaving as much as possible in original or mildly restored condition. The aluminum skin has not been polished, the hubcaps are not going to be plated, the counter-top was repainted the original color, and the ice box has not been replaced with a refrigerator. tors to begin negotiations to buy this one-of-a-kind vintage trailer. David Neel, The Executive Director of the Murphy’s Auto Museum in Oxnard, CA (and the host of the Buellton Rally) was one of those interested in the trailer. He and Scott ultimately struck a deal and David was the new owner of Arnie’s Sporting Goods.

Scott transported the trailer to the Murphy’s Auto Museum where it will be the centerpiece for the “trailer town” that David is curating in the 30,000 square foot building that houses the museum. Since the trailer arrived at the museum it has remained “closed” prior to its debut at the Vintage Trailer Show on June 25th. This parking lot show attracts dozens of trailers to the museum and brings attention to the eight trailers that are always on display along with the variety of cars that can be toured by the public.

David Neel took over the museum just four years ago after the original owner saw the crowds that a trailer display (that David hosted) brought to the museum. The museum had been open since 2000 but the owner was ready to step aside and David was willing to step-up. David said that he is glad that Scott gave him a “good deal” on the trailer so that he could acquire it and share it in the museum where everyone can enjoy it.

TCT 97th Winter Convention By Charon Henning The Tin Can Tourists 97th Winter convention took place once more on the beautiful grounds of the Sertoma Youth Ranch in Brooksville, FL, February 25th through the 28th. 117 trailers were on the grounds and registered by the time the pizza party got underway late Thursday afternoon. This was a record number for this gathering in modern times and it made for an amazing field of color, shine and glowing lights as night fell across the property. Initiation of new members took place Thursday evening, bringing nearly half of the attendees to the front of the pavilion for their Tin Canner education. This was the largest group of new members ever initiated at a Tin Can Tourists event, at around 85 strong, and is certainly evidence of the rapidly growing fascination with the history and culture surrounding these vehicles and their use. Hunt Jones’ “Got Gas? lecture on Thursday evening was not about propane hookups for travel trailers as one might have thought. Rather, it presented an illustrated history of the filling station from the time of its creation alongside

28

This was the largest group of new members ever initiated at a Tin Can Tourists event, at around 85 strong

America’s highways and byways to the modern, shiny convenience monoliths they have become today. Always thoroughly researched and professionally presented, Hunt’s talk was a stellar addition to the archives of his lecture series. Friday’s crock pot pot-luck brought more food together than even the largest crowd of members and initiates could consume. Later in the evening the Karen and Jimmy Band performed a high energy show of favorite country and southern rock until well into the night. Travel trailers and motor-homes of all makes and models were on display for the curious public during Saturday’s Open House, which drew several hundred visitors throughout the day. Some owners created museum style displays for their rigs, with decor

meticulously selected to match the era of the trailer. Saturday night festivities were rounded out with a performance by the Great Lazlo and Lady Riggy of the Schadenfreude Circus. The show, featuring fire eating, sword swallowing and the lifting of a full propane tank with a pair of industrial earrings, was not for the faint of heart. Canners seldom pass up the opportunity to witness something different and a splendid time was had by all. By the time most were hitched up and pulling off the lot, plans were already underway among many Canners to meet early the following year and spend time preparing for the festivities at the upcoming 98th Winter Convention. The setting at the Sertoma Youth Ranch is idyllic and pleasant and makes creating new memories with fellow Tin Canners a most wonderful way to spend a part of your winter.

One Trailer, Generations of Campers

By Karen Gehring In March of 1955 my parents bought a brand new 16 foot Aljoa travel trailer for a then extravagant amount of $1,600.00. Mom was pregnant with my brother who was born in June that year. Our first camping trip was to Baron Flats in the San Bernardino Mountains, CA on Labor Day 1955. I was two years old. My mom must have been pretty brave to pack a trailer with three small children including a newborn and head out along with my dad for a camping weekend. But it was the start of a long love affair

of camping for me and my family. We would take that little trailer out whenever there was a break from school, and every summer we would make the circuit from our home town Compton, CA to Tennessee to see mom’s family. Then on to Pittsburgh to see dad’s family. We saw many beautiful sights on the way. Dad was always one to try the unbeaten path to see what we could find, much to my mother’s chagrin.

In 1969 I met my future husband while we were juniors in high school. He did not get to camp much growing up but it was something he loved. When our first daughter was 18 months old, we borrowed the Aljoa from mom and dad along with their 1969 Chevy Impala and took our daughter camping up in Northern California. What a great time we had camping in that little trailer! And that little trip started many years of camping as second generation campers. Since we were avid water skiers, most of our camping was in tents since we pulled a boat. We didn’t think too much about the Aljoa until the fall of 2007. A friend of the family had used it as a guest house for many years but she was moving to Colorado to be with her daughter. I started wondering about the trailer. I didn’t have any of my childhood possessions and this would be the ultimate treasure. It took several months, but we took possession of the Aljoa in fall 2007 and began what would eventually become a two year project. The interior was in excellent original condition. We rubbed the beautiful birch interior with Howard’s Restorafinish which gave the wood new life and vibrancy. The old yellow Naugahyde dinette cushions remained sticky after many cleanings so we reupholstered those in a marine vinyl. We had the original Marvel fridge overhauled and I made new curtains and shades for the light sconces. We chromed a few pieces but that was it for inside restorations. The original Marmoleum floor was in excellent condition as well as the beautiful birch wood interior. The outside was a different story. I do not know how many hours it took us to completely strip off the many layers of latex paint. Then there were the hundred or so rusty screws that needed to be removed. After sending the windows to a polisher (Dave has since become very accomplished at polishing aluminum!), the trailer went to a friend of ours who did extensive body work and painted the trailer in the original colors of Gypsy Red and

India Ivory (which we found traces of under all that paint!). He used a single stage automotive paint that really pops. Dave added whitewall tires and the restoration was complete! This was in the fall of 2010. My mom and dad had a lot of fun watching the progress on the trailer as we brought it back. Dad’s health was failing and we were glad he was able to see the finished project. He was with us until 2012. Mom is now 93 and going strong. Although she is past camping in a trailer, she loves when we go out on an adventure. We keep her in the loop as to where we are and what we are doing. I love that she still gets to experience camping through us. All three of our kids have grown up camping and now take time to go with their own children. Our son recently acquired a 1978 Boles Aero and is starting new camping traditions with his family. We love camping in our beautiful piece of history! I have many happy memories of places visited and people seen. Being in our vintage trailer only makes it better! Oh if walls could talk! If I listen closely, I believe I can still hear my sister and I giggling at night on the dinette turned bed, and my brother making rude noises from his place in the rear bunk while mom is shushing us all and telling us to go to sleep.

1955 Boles Aero Barn Find

The original Preway, 4 burner stove and oven work perfectly, as does the clock on the stove. The gasket in the Marvel fridge is as soft as the day it was put in. The fridge and little freezer work perfectly.

Yes, this was truly a barn find. This 24ft. Ensenada was sitting in the back of a huge barn on a wheat farm in eastern Oregon. It was discovered by the Jones’ son in 2011 as he was putting equipment away in the barn after a day of cutting wheat on a combine. He knew his folks enjoyed their teardrop and Lakewood 12 ft. “canned ham”, so he couldn’t wait to text a photo of this trailer to them. The Joneses got up there a few months later, made a deal with the owner (whose parents had bought it new) and after a month of preliminary clean up, tire and axle replacement, and clearing the barn to get it out, it headed to its new home in California.

As the years of mice poop and dirt were cleared off, the beauty of the interior shone through. Not one piece or part was missing or broken. The original curtains, venetian blinds, upholstery, knobs, gaskets, Bakelite handles, were all there. All of it! And even more amazingly, each and every item was in perfect condition, including the beautiful birch interior. No need to sand and refinish! No chips, dents, dings or cracks. The exterior was in good shape too. Just an afternoon with some of Vintage Trailer Supply’s plasticoat removal product and the old, yellowed peeling remainder hanging onto the exterior washed away.

The door to the trailer had not been opened since 1974 when it was last used. It was full of clothes, items from the last time it was used and about a million mice. Incredibly, the mice, having lots of wheat to eat, didn’t chew or destroy any parts of the trailer, but had gotten into every crevice they could and nested. Their entry was through the open sewer connection and the air duct under the trailer for the diesel furnace.

The windows and gaskets were still soft as were the darling plastic ruffled curtains over the porcelain bathroom sink. The 3 gallon flush toilet got new innards, the 200 pounds of galvanized (yes, you read that right) sewer pipes were replaced with lightweight ABS pipes, the old water heater was replaced with a new 5 gallon one and it was ready to show.

32

www.vintagecampertrailers.com

The Duo-Therm diesel furnace (above) works perfectly, heating the interior in minutes with no smoke, no fumes, and no fuss or muss.

The original curtains, venetian blinds, upholstery, knobs, gaskets, Bakelite handles, were all there. The beauty of the interior shone through. Not one piece or part was missing or broken.

Owners: Mike & Lori Jones Sonora, CA

This is a “park model” so it has no holding tanks or fresh water tank. The 5 gallon water heater allows you to take a long shower and the darling “Lucy and Desi” twin beds are easy to make and maneuver around. The Jones’ live in the Boles Aero a month at a time in Palm Springs, CA during the winter and can’t get over all the storage and the great layout of the interior.

HOME BUILT

Used to go camping from 1949 to 1951. This original Stand-Up “teardrop” was rolled in a garage, put on blocks and covered for 57 years. In 2008 Norman found an interesting trailer on Craigslist in Santa Maria, CA. After setting an appointment to look at the trailer, Norman told his wife he was on his way to get her a “new” trailer. It was a “new” trailer for Norman and Francoise but it was certainly not a “new” trailer. This trailer was a 1949 Stand Up teardrop. It was a home built trailer that had been used to go camping from 1949 to 1951. In 1951 the Stand Up was rolled in a garage, put on blocks and covered. It stayed in that exact location for 57 years. At 92 years old, the owner/builder was convinced that it was time to pass the little gem onto new owners. Norman happened to be the lucky one to be first in line for this original beauty. After purchasing the teardrop, making sure there was air in the tires and new grease in the bearings, Norman drove it back to his home in Sherman Oaks, CA on its original tires. (A 150 mile trip.) Norman later found out that those tires were made by the US Rubber Tire Co. in Norwalk, CT. That just happens to be where Norman was born. It was meant to be.

36

www.vintagecampertrailers.com

This original Stand Up teardrop is an amazing time capsule. It still sports its original curtains and canvas. It opens like a clam shell and allows the occupants to stand while inside. It opens up to 6’8” tall, 6’4” wide and just 9’9” long. Inside has sleeping for two, an ice box, cabinets, a folding table for four an original cook stove and lanterns, and electric heat. There is even room for a porta-potty.

Norman and Francoise enjoy taking their “new” trailer to several rallies a year, sharing its history and originality with others.

GAS PUMPS Then and Now

Shasta Service Station Circa 1950’s in Chico, CA Owners: Angelo and Ruby Lacitinola (The Vintage Camper Trailers Magazine publisher’s Grandparents.) AKA Nan and Pop.

A Moment in Time Retro Design sells vintage style gas pumps on our website, www.Heffrons.com. We have seen a growing number of requests for not only classic gas pumps but also custom made gas pumps that feature customers’ logos or designs. So, what makes gasoline pumps such a wanted collectible? Some suggest the color, the brand, the era, or all of the above. Since gas pumps are so unique in style, the real answer is that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The Early Years Before driving was the primary form of transportation, the technology needed to pump gas was being developed. In 1885, the first kerosene pump was manufactured by Sylvanus

38

www.vintagecampertrailers.com

Bowser of Fort Wayne, Indiana. The device was used more as a metal can that could be brought to your home to fuel stoves and lighting fixtures. As cars became more prevalent and travel was on the rise, the idea of pumps being used for automobiles began to grow. Bowser added a hose to his pump and eventually a nozzle. Store clerks would count the number of crank pumps made with the handle to figure out how many gallons of fuel had been pumped. The clerk would also look down the gas tank filler hole to see the height of the gas level in the car’s tank so that they would know when it was full. Due to the lack of accuracy, neither method was particularly liked by stores or customers. Something needed to change.

The Beginning of Change The demand for a more precise way to measure gas would eventually lead to the design of the visible gas pump. Some visible pumps could stand upwards to 10ft tall. Almost like a science beaker, the cylinders were marked by gallons making it easy for both the buyer and seller to see what was being pumped.

FUN FACT: Do you know how a gas pump knows when your tank is full? It’s because of a tube that runs back up into the fuel pump handle. As gas flows through the nozzle, a vacuum pressure causes air to be sucked up. Once the tank is full, the flow of air stops and the vacuum pressure begins to build. In the nozzle handle the pressure builds until it forces a lever that pops the handle trigger, shutting off the flow of gasoline. Wrapping Up Gas pumps became synonymous with America’s growth. During the 1930’s -1950’s, the glowing globe gas pumps popped up along roadsides across America. The now iconic signage reminds us of the past.

Gas Pumps Timeline: 1890 to 1900 primitive, hand pumps, no measurement device 1900 to 1910 primitive, hand pump, some with clockface 1910 to 1920 primitive, hand pumps, minimal color, some with clockface (possibly attached visible attachment) 1920 to 1930 primitive, hand pumps, some with color, some with clockface, some with glowing globe on top 1930 to 1940 art deco styled with color, some with both clockface and glass cylinders, glowing globe on top 1940 to 1950 square styling and color, electronic with clock face and cylinder, some with sight glass (smaller cylinder), still has glowing globe on top 1950 to 1960 box style only, glowing computerized measurement and price calculation

Originally used to suck kerosene from barrels at general stores, delivering the fluid to a customer’s portable metal can. The product would then be brought home to fuel stoves, lighting fixtures, and possibly a horseless carriage (if the customer was fortunate enough to afford one.) Heffron’s gas pumps are hand crafted, custom reproductions made to fit your needs. Each pump is full sized and built right here in the USA. Unlike gas pumps built years ago, our gas pumps provide a lot of great features that make them perfect for any den, garage, shop, or business. Features such as flat screen TV’s, display shelves, iPads, and beer taps can be added to your retro gas pump to make it just how you want it. For all of your gas pumps visit A Moment in Time Retro design today at our website: www.Heffrons.com or give our office a call. We look forward to hearing from you!
