What our customers have to say about us
We picked up a 62 Shasta trailer and the side looked like a kid took a stick to the side of it. It was bad. We brought the skin to Hemet Valley RV and they Made a new piece. The Bottom skin is new and the top skin was old, but they look identical. It had 6 inch lines and it turned out perfect. Thanks Guys. Great job. -Barry

Five Star Plus!!! Steve and his company demonstrate what customer service should look like. Thanks so much! -Glenn I recently purchased all of the siding, trim and entry door for an 1970 11’ foot trailer that I rebuilt using only the metal frame of the original trailer. I contacted Steve at Hemet Valley RV and sent him a side view of the trailer with the dimensions on it. Steve figured out what material I needed and the amount and sent it. Everything that I needed I received in a timely fashion and it was packaged in very strong boxes...Thanks so much for the great job Steve, I have no doubt that your business will have continued success, Great Job. -Wayne M.

Well before we started publishing this magazine we coined the term Rescue, Restore, Rally. These three words seemed to sum up what the vintage trailering hobby was all about. We were rescuing long forgotten trailers; restoring them ourselves, and going to as many rallies as we could. For five years those three words have been on the cover of this magazine and still resonate with us after a decade of immersion in a hobby we still have a mounting passion for. After Trailerfest this year, Caroline and I were discussing the hobby/business and what 2017 would look like. After a weekend of 500 friends laughing, eating and chipping-in at the Trailerfest Rally, we came up with our fourth “R”. The Relationships we have made with so many people have blessed us more than the trailers themselves. Having the common bond with others that like old stuff has made making friends at rallies easy. On our way home from the Buellton Rally our fuel pump in our Yukon went out. As we sat on the side of the freeway; it only took a couple of minutes for Carl from Tinker Tin Trailers to stop and help. He was on his way home with his latest pick and was willing to do whatever it took to help us. We ultimately called Doug and Sue Owen whom we had been camping with at the Buellton Rally that weekend and at the Petaluma Rally just a few weeks before. (They had made the mistake of saying “If you are ever in the area…”). Long story short, we towed everything to their house and Doug (a mechanic) had it all fixed for me within a couple of days. Several other friends, leaving the Buellton Rally that afternoon, stopped or called to see if we needed any help. 300 miles from home and we had more friends that we could count on than if we had been in our hometown. The other word we have added to our “2017 Business Plan” is Experience. We want to create more opportunities for more trailerites to “experience” vintage trailering. That means events like Boot Camp where we can help you rescue and restore trailers-to Trailerfest rallies where we build relationships while having fun. I invite you to join us this year in the vintage camper trailer hobby experience. Come out from behind your computer and meet new friends. Get a trailer and get to a rally! Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

is a 1960 Aristocrat Lil’ Loafer. She was rescued from a backyard by a friend of Donn and Donna Marschall. The Marschalls acquired her in 2012 and thus embarked on their three year epic restoration journey. The Marschalls have been long time vintage camper trailerites. During the 1990’s they owned a 1950’s teardrop. After fifteen years of getting dressed while laying down, they decided it was time to graduate to a stand-up trailer. They bought and restored a 1967 Aristocrat Low-Liner and camped in that trailer for several years. Like many vintage camper trailer hobbyists, the Marschalls find and rescue trailers and make the process appear effortless. They have been instrumental in helping several people find their own vintage campers. After inspecting Tiny Shiny, Donn and Donna knew she was going to require a frame-up restoration. All the wood in the trailer had to be replaced. With the help of Steve and Patty Elliott, they were able to rebuild the cabinets and reassemble the trailer. They added a marine toilet in this tiny 9 ft. trailer.

It is housed in an extended closet and has hook-ups like any other RV. Donna got busy with her artistic expression and splatter painted the interior, (her favorite part of this restoration) as well as making the curtains and doing the upholstery on their couch which folds down into a double bed. Donn, with characteristic gusto, and with some help from Donna, started polishing the exterior, (his least favorite part of this restoration)! To give others an idea of the time required to polish an aluminum trailer, the Marschalls kept track of the time they spent polishing. They spent over 120 hours to make Tiny shiny! Interestingly, this Lil’ Loafer was originally sold with bare aluminum and had never been painted. High school sweethearts who have been married over 58 years, Donn and Donna both agreed that they will never polish another trailer. However, Donna shrugged and with a grin, said maybe she shouldn’t say “never” as she has said that about starting more trailer projects and they are currently in the midst of cleaning up a 1955 Boles Aero, Ensenada!

Doug and Sue Owen 1963 Bee Line Hornet After attending the Buellton Vintage Trailer Bash for several years in their modern trailer, Doug and Sue Owen invited their friends Mike and Debi Brockett to come check out the event with them. It only took Mike and Debi a couple of weeks to find a vintage trailer and convince Doug and Sue to fix the trailer they had sitting in their back yard so they could all start camping vintage. Sue had always wanted a vintage trailer for her back yard to use as a play house and yard art. It was a well known desire and when their friend saw the Bee Line for sale on Craigslist he called the Owens. Doug immediately called the seller and bought Sue her little trailer. It sat in the back yard for over a year where it was used as a play house for their grandchildren. After returning from the vintage rally, they decided it was time to rebuild their ’63 Bee Line Hornet. In just four months the Owens tore down, reinforced and rebuilt their 13ft trailer, (10 ft. box). It has a drop floor that is a little over 3 ft. by 3 ft. and 9 inches deep in the center of the trailer allowing Sue at 5’7 to stand up in the Bee Line. Doug, at 6 ft., still has to stoop while in the trailer. With the restoration complete, the Owens are busy showing off their tiny trailer as they attend rallies up and down California!

This is our unidentified 15-foot trailer that we picked up last December. The transfer papers listed it as a 1964 model but there are no identifying marks on it except for some stick on letters. I’m pretty sure the whole interior was homemade and it needs to be gutted. Since it was pretty much a “blank slate” I decided to borrow design elements from some of my favorite vintage trailers. I have done all of the work myself, to this point, including the paint and restoring and installing the
vintage jalousie windows...I don’t have to tell you it’s a big job. Next step is the birch interior and green sparkle dinette and counter-tops. We hope to attend a couple of Washington state rallies next spring and also intend to make the trek to Plymouth, CA for Trailerfest in September of next year. Gord Miller Victoria, BC Canada This is the 1964 Ideal trailer we picked up from the Trailerfest Rally in 2015. Although at times it felt hopeless and we about gave up, it ended up coming together and made another great family project. We had the frame rebuilt by a local farming fabricator, as the back-end frame was wood and was too far gone to save. All paneling, wall supports, windows, plumbing, electrical, and 60% of floors was also replaced or repaired. We did manage to keep the original outside siding, sink, stove, counters, cabinets doors, but found a 60’s replacement icebox. The trailer is themed in an outdoors-man hunting/fishing with a cabin feel. The trailer’s finishing touch was a late 1800’s J. Stevens double-barrel 12 gauge shotgun. Willy and Andrea Harrison. Todd and Terri Dingman’s 1963 Hi-Lo. The Dingmans, along with their daughter Trianna, enjoy attending vintage camper rallies. The Hi-Lo was found in Washington State and required a complete rebuild by the Dingmans. It was in such poor condition that it split in half when they removed the aluminum during the restoration!
The Hi-lo trailers upper half is slightly larger than the lower half. It can be lowered down over the lower half to a height of about five feet. Easier to tow and store. 12 different Vintage Trailers Camping in 12 different National Parks
My Name is Glenda Palmer; I live in the beautiful City of Temecula, California and I’m a member of the Temecula Valley Art League. Growing up, my siblings and I camped out quite a bit. We camped in Crestline, Big Bear, Colorado River, Shaver Lake, different beaches, even the Salton Sea. One of my sisters owns a 1957 (Canned Ham) Field & Stream Trailer and we still enjoy taking it camping. Last January I started 3 paintings featuring Vintage Trailers Camping. When I heard it was the Centennial for the “National Park Services” I decided to paint Vintage Trailers Camping in our National Parks. It was also then that I decided to paint 12 different Trailers Camping in 12 different National Parks, plus one for the Front Cover to make a 2017 “Happy Campers” Calendar. We have 59 main National Parks and over 350 more sites in the United States that are maintained by our National Parks Services. Each of the 59 National Parks is listed on the Calendar on the day, and the year it
was established. The Calendar also lets you know where each park is located. 100 years ago, on August 25th, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson signed a bill creating the National Parks System and it was created “to conserve the scenery and natural and historical objects and wildlife therein, and to provide for the enjoyment of the same in such manner and by such means as will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations”. It takes over 20,000 employees and almost $3 billion a year to maintain our parks. I would like to donate a portion of the Calendar sales to the “National Parks Services” as an incentive for people to buy them, also available are Prints, Giclees, Mouse Pads, T-shirts, Coffee Mugs, etc. Celebrate 100 years of the “National Park Service” and help Support our National Parks! As a first-year college student, Gray Hartley bought himself a car – a 1951 Ford Woody! This was the first in a lifetime of owning antique and vintage vehicles. In fact, in the early 70’s he purchased a 1947 Plymouth Coupe for $50 that he drove to Alaska where he began his 30-year career as a commercial fisherman. The Plymouth was converted into a “camper” by removing the back seat and making a single bed from the front seat to the trunk. The bed was a 4-inch foam mattress complete with sheets, pillow cases and a quilt! The old Plymouth made it back and forth from California to Alaska three different times without any trouble – not so much as a flat tire!
16
www.vintagecampertrailers.com
As a child, Gray recalls spending time with his cousins each year camping at Refugio Beach in Southern California. The family had a teardrop trailer with a galley that they would use to do all the cooking. This was the beginning of a lifelong love of camping. In 2002, Gray bought his first vintage trailer, an Argosy, which he later sold to buy another old truck! Always on the lookout for a great deal, Gray read a single line “For Sale” ad in a local sales flier for an old trailer. He called to inquire about the details and reached the original owners of a 1964 Field and Stream. The owners said they were too busy to show the trailer, but Gray told them he was dropping by the bank for the cash and would be there within the hour if they could make it work. Reluctantly they agreed. When Gray arrived at their home, he found an all original ’64 Field and Stream that had sat in a barn for 10 years. It had only been used once during that time! Surprisingly, everything worked! Gray said there wasn’t even a single mouse dropping in the trailer! By the time Gray had the trailer hooked up and ready to go, the original owner was wondering what he had done as he had received numerous calls inquiring about the Field and Stream. This tiny trailer is just 12 feet long.

Besides being a commercial fisherman, Gray is also the coowner of Hartley-Ostini Hitching Post Winery in Buellton, CA. In 2014, Gray was busy at his winery when he saw vintage trailers rolling into Buellton. After inquiring about the why and where he realized there was a group of vintage camper trailer owners camping together at Flying Flag RV Resort and Campground in Buellton, CA. He drove over and checked out David Neel’s Buellton Rally and had his name added to the roster to attend the following year.
The flowers in the beard may have been a sign of the times. This is Gray and his first vintage Camper in 1971. A 1947 Plymouth Special Deluxe P-15 body style.
He may be relatively new to the vintage camper trailer rally world, but he has a lifetime of enjoying the adventures that come along with camping in a classic trailer. Several times a year Gray and his wife, Charlotte, take their children and grandchildren and return to Refugio Beach to create more memories centered on camping as a family. Field and Stream trailers were manufactured in Gardena, California by Vacation Industries Inc.

This was the 6th annual Trailerfest Rally at Tower Park in Lodi, CA. We started with less than 20 trailers and for the past several years have sold out with over 250 trailers participating! What a bunch of fun it has been! After working with KOA for five years, we had the pleasure of working with new owners this year. Jellystone purchased the park last summer and helped make Trailerfest 2016 go off without a hitch! (No pun intended). Jellystone’s plans for next year are to add more cabins and consequently have less campsites. With over 250 trailers at this event (and more on the waiting list), we have to move the party! Jellystone has plans to eventually add more camp sites with a future expansion to the park, so who knows, we may be back. In the meantime, we will continue to enjoy their hospitality for other events, like Boot Camp in the spring. (See the back cover for information on next year’s Trailerfests. We are having two!)

It may look like Christmas time, but this rally was held in mid October in Northern California! Most of the participants took the “Christmas in the Trailer Park theme and ran with it. Trailers were decorated with vintage Christmas props including trees, lit Santas and snowmen. Over half of the trailers arrived on Thursday to a forecast of possible rain during the weekend. We finally got some drizzle by Friday afternoon but by Saturday the weather was beautiful for open house. We enjoyed many visitors and classic cars. We were able to help the local Salvation Army with generous donations. Volunteers decorated the pavilion group area with lights and made serving hundreds of trailerites a couple of meals doable. The willingness of so many to cook, serve and cleanup makes these events fun. Without our awesome volunteers, it would be impossible to execute events on this scale.
Friday night was beautiful and peaceful. Cool and lit up with Christmas lights.

Roger brought out his mobile coffee cart and made mochas and lattes for all the good Tow Boyz and Girlz. Martha and Rick churned homemade Candy Cane Ice Cream to feed the masses. Santa and Mrs. Clause enjoy Christmas dinner. We BBQ’d 300 pounds of ham and served over 500 people! (aka Virgina and Charles) The stockings were hung by the chimney with care... and the tables were all decorated for dinner. Each meal sat hundreds! Hundreds of people enjoyed a pot-luck dinner Thursday Night, Christmas cookie decorating on Friday Night (1,000 trailer shaped cookies), breakfast Saturday and a Christmas dinner of ham and fixens for dinner on Saturday night.
By Saturday night around 7:00 pm the band and the rain started. Sunday morning, after three days of fun, food and friends we loaded up and rolled out. Nobody melted and we had more shine than rain.

Part Classic Car, Part Rolling History Lesson J.M. Keely’s 1931 Ford Model A De Luxe Coupe & Custom Trailer By Kurt Ernst The life of a traveling salesman could be a harsh and lonely existence, especially in the depths of the Great Depression, but hitting the road with a well-appointed house trailer, office, and mobile showroom surely made things a bit more palatable. This October, RM Sotheby’s offered up an interesting time capsule of 1930s American history at its Hershey, Pennsylvania, sale, when a 1931 Ford Model A De Luxe coupe and custom trailer that once served as fishing and marine supply salesman J.M. Keely’s mobile base of operations crossed the auction stage. From the company’s headquarters in Miami, Florida, the J.M. Keely Sales Company offered up nearly anything the active fisherman or boater might need, from rods and reels to tackle, outboard motors and even portable generators. It’s not clear when the business was founded or even if the Model A and trailer combination offered

The life of a traveling salesman could be a harsh and lonely existence, especially in the depths of the Great Depression, represents Keely’s first attempt at a mobile showroom, but the business employed traveling salesmen (later in step vans) into the 1950s. A J.M. Keely Sales Company, likely related to the Miami-based original, was registered in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in 1958, but the business is listed as inactive today. The once-grand J.M. Keely Sales Company showroom in Miami, has been razed, and today the corner property is nothing more than a vacant lot.

bin. While the car’s 201-cu.in. L-head four-cylinder engine, rated at 40 horsepower, remained in stock form, the rear axle, hubs, brakes and wheels were borrowed from a Ford Model AA truck. A stouter transverse leaf spring replaced the original light-duty unit used on coupes, and the rear frame was reinforced to accommodate the addition of a
Glenn Curtiss Aero Coupler trailer hitch, which utilized a horizontally mounted tire and wheel to cushion against bumps and vibration. Like the Model A De Luxe Coupe offered, the trailer also relied upon a Ford AA truck rear axle, carrying over the heavy-duty hubs and using vacuum-op-
erated brakes. Electricity came from 110v “shore power,” onboard storage batteries (charged by a dedicated sixvolt generator in the Model A), or one of Keely’s Onan generators, depending upon the location. Outfitted as a mobile showroom for the company’s wares, the trailer accommodated life on the road with a bed (and a frame that allowed the

Excluding the included chamber pot, the trailer contained no bathroom, although an on board 25-gallon tank did provide water for washing, drinking, and cooking. Those with a particularly keen eye will
note that the trailer’s door handles and window cranks are Model A parts. It’s quite likely that the Ford parts were both cheap and readily available when the mobile showroom was constructed, adding to its sensible function-before-form mission. With J.M. Keely himself behind the wheel, this rig traveled the roads of
south Florida and the Gulf Coast, selling wholesale fishing and boating supplies to a network of regional dealers. Though the exact years in service remain a mystery, the weather-beaten combo was pulled from a pole barn in Key West, Florida. The custom Model A and the unique trailer were damaged by Hurricane Andrew, a category five storm
that devastated Florida and Louisiana in 1992, so the restoration must have been a lengthy and complex endeavor. The end result is a unique window into Depression-era America. The Model A and trailer are offered complete with vintage fishing and boating gear; the sale even includes road maps and company letterhead used by
Keely on the road. Uniquely positioned to appeal to collectors of the Ford Model A, vintage trailers and vintage fishing / boating supplies, the lot is being sold by RM Sotheby’s. A previous attempt to find a buyer, at Auctions America’s 2012 Auburn sale, resulted in a high bid of $70,000 which failed to meet the then-established reserve price.
RM Sotheby’s Hershey auction took place on October 6-7, 2016 at the Hershey Lodge in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Bidding on the combo reached $82,500 but once again did not meet the undisclosed reserve price. Source: Hemmings Daily, a publication of Hemmings Motor News. Home-A-Long History By Toni Miltenberger There are times when the most amazing connections happen when you least expect them. The Buellton Bash Vintage Trailer Rally 2016 had ended, we had driven away to go home and stopped to see someone’s “new” vintage trailer they had recently acquired -- but, while passing through Buellton on the way back, we decided to stay one more night at the resort. Chuck was approached by a lovely lady at our trailer. Our vintage trailer caught the lady’s eye. She shared some wonderful vintage pictures of a relative who manufactured and sold trailers in an earlier time. Susan’s husband’s grandfather was a manufacturer of trailers in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, in the late 1930s (maybe until his passing in 1947). Our old trailer reminded her of the pictures she had which had been handed down through her husband’s ancestral line; she became the keeper of the family tree and the memories it held. Sometimes one just gets lucky by being in the right place at the right time — It is my deep pleasure to share these fantastic pictures with other trailerites. If anyone has more information on the history of the Home-ALong trailer, Susan would love to hear from them. email vintagecampertrailers@gmail.com [History provided and shared by Susan Webster as told to Toni Miltenberger]

In 1904, a young Italian immigrant by the name of James F. Franceschini came to Canada with a pick and shovel to dig basements for 15 cents an hour. Through hard work, determination and a passion for opportunity he founded what is now known as the Dufferin Construction Company. That was in 1912. By the 1940’s they were working on the construction of the Alaska Highway.
This “radio car” was used and rented out by the Hampson’s but it is unsure if it was manufactured by Hampson Products.

Toronto of the 1940’s was place defined by war and its aftermath. Whether it was people shopping with ration coupons, the comingling of propaganda and advertising or new housing projects built to accommodate soldiers returning home from Europe. Along with the war effort, the 1940s is likely best known for the waves of immigration that got underway during the latter part of the decade. Large numbers of people moved to Toronto from Europe. This changed the city’s cultural makeup. The diversification of the population continued, and multiculturalism has become the symbol of contemporary Toronto.
Norman Hampson (1887 - 1947) manufactured and sold the Home-ALong trailer in Toronto, Canada. He married Margaret Scott. They had two sons and a daughter, Verna (who married William Webster). Norman is survived by his grandsons, Dan & Richard Webster (Susan Webster is married to Richard).

By: Heffron’s A Moment In Time Retro Design You may have seen tin signs at a hometown restaurant or perhaps the popular TV show American Pickers and wondered what all the hype was about. It turns out that tin signs were a pretty big deal back in the 1950’s and their popularity has only seemed to have grown in recent years. So why do people love tin signs? That’s what we are here to explore; from the introduction of the lithographic offset press that produced them, to the vinyl and plastic “vintage tin” signs of today.
Early History
Unlike advertisements found on paper, tin signs could survive the weather and be displayed outside of a store to help sell items. Around 1869 manufacturers started using lithography to transfer images directly onto tin boxes. Although expensive, these tin signs did a great job of selling everything from food, gasoline, and tobacco products. They were eye-catching and colorful. Marketing strategies were built around tin signs as companies competed to try and come up with the most creative and beautiful advertising possible. Tin was the preferred and most logical choice for signs during this period and would continue to be right up until World War 2. During the war metal was needed for the war efforts and tin sign production stopped. People focused on maintaining their old signs rather than replacing them. By the time the war ended, tin signs made a comeback, plastic and vinyl would soon become the material of choice for many businesses. The materials were more durable than tin and in the 1950s would replace tin signs almost entirely.

Buying Vintage Signs
For most, buying reproductions will do the trick. They are high quality and look just like the old time tin signs you might find during the era. However, if you are looking for the real deal then that may require a little more work. When buying a tin sign it’s important to look for any evidence of rust which can hurt the signs’ value. At the same time, a tin sign that looks in too good of condition might just be a reproduced sign. Tin signs can be dated by the lithography. By looking through a magnifying glass you can determine its age. If you see a regular pattern of
Finally tin collators grade signs on a scale of 1 to 10 and the number of your sign can make a huge difference as signs on the higher end can sometimes be worth as much as 15 times as much as those on the lower end. If you plan on spending a lot of money on a tin sign, it might not be a bad idea to get an expert involved who can judge the sign properly.
More Popular Than Others
There are hundreds, if not thousands of tin signs to choose from. From Baseball and Beer to Hollywood and Humorous tin signs. Some however are more popular than others. Take for example the Route 66 signs. These signs are an all time favorite as they represent the ultimate road trip. In 1926 the Route 66 sign was a way for the millions of Americans moving west to find their way. Since being removed from the highway system almost 35 years ago, travelers from all over still make the trip to travel the mother road. Tin signs representing rivalries can also be popular. Tins signs got their popularity right around the time that the rivalry between Harley-Davidson and Indian motorcycles was heating up. For a biker, this was an opportunity to show which side you represented beyond simply the motor-
cycle you rode. The battle between Pepsi and Coke also makes their respective signs popular for tin sign collectors.
Wrapping Up
So why are Tin Signs still as popular today as they were back then? As you’ve read the answer really comes down to personal preference. For some it’s about being able to hold onto a piece of history. Just look no further than the hit TV show American Pickers and the tin signs they have found throughout the series. For those into the reproduction signs it’s about nostalgia for the era and a time where tin signs were featured outside of every gas station and store. No matter the reason, we have a feeling that tin signs aren’t going away anytime soon. For the highest quality tin signs on the market, visit A Moment in Time Retro Design today at our website: www. Heffrons.com or give us a call. We look forward to hearing from you!
