What our customers have to say about us

We picked up a 62 Shasta trailer and the side looked like a kid took a stick to the side of it. It was bad. We brought the skin to Hemet Valley RV and they Made a new piece. The Bottom skin is new and the top skin was old, but they look identical. It had 6 inch lines and it turned out perfect. Thanks Guys. Great job. -Barry

Five Star Plus!!! Steve and his company demonstrate what customer service should look like. Thanks so much! -Glenn I recently purchased all of the siding, trim and entry door for an 1970 11’ foot trailer that I rebuilt using only the metal frame of the original trailer. I contacted Steve at Hemet Valley RV and sent him a side view of the trailer with the dimensions on it. Steve figured out what material I needed and the amount and sent it. Everything that I needed I received in a timely fashion and it was packaged in very strong boxes...Thanks so much for the great job Steve, I have no doubt that your business will have continued success, Great Job. -Wayne M.

Extensive knowledge and quality materials. Very fair pricing and quick turn around time. Steve and Tammy are always helpful. -Larry

The Trip

I want to start by traveling west Meandering toward a road Or down a path that’s wide enough For my gypsy wagonload. I’ll stay a bit in Santa Fe And treat myself to Zen I’ll then move on to West L.A. And stay a while with friends.

Then venture north where Red Oaks bulge And on where apple trees Grow lush and tart with bleeding hearts That spill juices on my sleeve Turn to the east and slowly go Toward Big Sky’s vast terrain And cross her breast as I leave the west To head for Portland, Maine. Spend autumn in New England Under pale New Hampshire moons Then take the coastline south by night Toward the Carolina dunes. Wind down the Atlantic Highway To sites of cypress trees Then sail away on a lazy trawler For a sunset in the Keys. Go north along the Gulf Coast And breeze throughout the south Jazz dance and scream in New Orleans Across the Mississippi’s mouth. Back home again to Texas There is no finer place Her hills are blessed with nature’s best Her people, full of grace. But sometimes when I’m restless Other places call to me They’re out there and they’re waiting For my traveling fools and me. www.vintagecampertrailers.com

Thank You to all of you that subscribe to the VCT Magazine, have purchased our first book and attended the rallies that we hosted last year. Your support over the past five years is appreciated and allows us to continue to promote the vintage trailering hobby. 2017 looks like it is going to be even busier than last year! Book Number Two: Our first book sold out of the first printing in a few short months. The response to it has been very rewarding and now we are working on book number two. Many trailerites have asked us how to get their trailers in our publications. It’s easy…If we can’t get to you, send your photos and stories to us! For our next book we are looking for photos of trailers and people having fun at vintage trailer rallies. For more information visit our website and see the “VCT Book 2” tab. Camp Store: As we travel to numerous rallies each year, we love interacting with like-minded people that appreciate all things vintage. At rallies we typically offer vintage trailering books, back issues of the magazine and our tee-shirts. I don’t know why it took us so long to build a mobile “Camp Store”! With an inspirational kick-in-the-butt from Scott Burud (see his vintage trailer store in issue #26 of the VCT Magazine), we found a 1955 Spartan at Flyte Camp and are busy building our take on a vintage camper trailer/store. Look for our “vintage vendor” at rallies this year. More Experiences: We are committed to creating experiences for everyone that wants to be a part of the hobby. With over 100 people on the waiting list for our Trailerfest Rally, we are having two this year! We have moved our fall event from Lodi, CA to a bigger park in Plymouth, CA. We are also doing a spring “Trailerfiesta” in Petaluma. (See ads in this magazine or visit www.trailerfetrally.com for details.) Boot Camp, Operation Restoration is coming up in March. It is bigger and better than last year with even more guest speakers and special guests “The Gypsy Time Travelers”. Along with lots of restoration learning we are also having some fun with swing dance lessons on Saturday night! Register at: www.vintagecampertrailers.com The Rally at the Ranch get together welcomes all year makes and models of RV’s. We have lots of room and lots of vintage trailer admirers that are “manufacture date challenged” with newer rigs. At this event we can all get together for some camping fun. Live country western music, potlucks and root beer floats. Register in advance and save $20.00 at www.vintagecampertrailers.com. We look forward to your continued support this year and ask that you welcome others in your circle of friends in to the vintage trailering hobby. On our website we have trailers for sale if they are ready to come camping. If they are just admirers at the moment they can get a copy of the VCT Book or “Join the club” and subscribe to the magazine.

ARIZONA

La Siesta Campgrounds in Arivaca, Arizona offers a camping season that is opposite of most the United States La Siesta Campgrounds in Arivaca, Arizona has been hosting vintage camper trailer rallies for Southern Arizona Vintage Trailers and Rides Club, Sisters on the Fly, Arizona Round Up, Streamline Vintage Travel Trailers and Tin Can Tourist Southwest since 2014. This year La Siesta’s owner, Steve Rendon, emailed Paul and I at Vintage Camper Trailers Magazine to let us know about the Monster Bash Rally sponsored by the Southern Arizona

Vintage Trailers and Rides Club. Steve invited us to come stay in a beautiful 19-foot Spartan owned by Michelle Davis. The Spartan is one of several permanent vintage camper trailers setup at the campground for guests to rent at La Siesta. With rainy summer monsoons starting in May and lasting through September, the Arizona camping season is opposite of most the United States. When we

arrived at the campground, Steve and rally hosts, Keith and Renae Kersey, welcomed us and made us feel right at home. It became immediately apparent that the people at this rally were more than associates – they were family. The Monster Bash Weekend, Oct. 27th through the 30th , was the first camp-out of the season and much catching up was being done around the campground. While old friends were catching up, new

friends were being made and welcomed. Susan and Troy Hayes from Tucson, Arizona towed their 1967 Kenskill to the rally for its maiden voyage. Before they even set up their awning, people were there taking pictures and checking out the trailer. The Hayes bought the Kenskill in Idaho and had it towed to Arizona. When the trailer arrived, it looked pretty good, but as they started to rebuild, they found it was full of mold and rot and needed extensive work. Susan had been looking for a vintage trailer for quite some time and had met up with fellow vintage trailer enthusiast Brenda Herrera. The Hayes liked the trailers Brenda and Rex had rebuilt and with no time or expertise to do the work themselves, they hired Brenda Herrera and Rex McKay from Apache Junction, Arizona to rebuild their Kenskill.

The 1967 Kenskill was bought and restored in memory of Susan’s mom Elaine. Elaine, a single mom, was a generous, giving person. Susan’s fun relationship with her mother included calling her mother “Eunice.” When called “Eunice”, Elaine would be quick to remind Susan that she was the daughter of “Eunice”. Susan said her mother loved traveling as well as shiny pretty things and the Hayes wanted the trailer to share that same spirit. With its big windows, sparkling chandelier and bright colors, “Eunice” the trailer, is a beautiful tribute to Susan’s mother and her zest for life and travel. The Hayes are planning on enjoying the camper while they make new memories as a family and remember the legacy “Eunice” passed on to enjoy traveling and admire what is beautiful.

The weekend ended with a rousing chili cook off won by Roni Cleveland who generously donated her winnings to the local Arivaca 4-H Club. Roni held tightly to the title of Chili Cook-off Champion! It was a fun, spirited competition with delicious chilies. The kids from town were invited to the campground and encouraged to go trick-or-treating. Those giving and receiving the candy were equally pleased by the offerings of creative costumes and the prolific candy assortment! Following candy sorting, the kids played games under the starry desert sky while the adults enjoyed visiting around the fire. Again, the spirit of those who love camping in vintage trailers is the same no matter where you go: acceptance for all who enjoy and preserve some of the best the United States had to offer in the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s

While Dr. Holman’s 1935 Torpedo was officially recognized in 1984 by Wally Byam himself as Airstream’s oldest known trailer in existence, please allow us to present this case — that this wooden/Masonite 1936 Airstream Silver Cloud is the oldest full factory production Airstream trailer, presently in existence. The story goes that Dr. Holman read an ad for Airstreams in the May 1935 edition of Popular Mechanics. For 25 cents he could purchase a folder illustrating four Airstreams. He then purchased plans for five dollars for his Torpedo in 1935, but the trailer was not completed until 2 1/2 years later and wasn’t on the road until 1937. In addition, it was not actually built by Airstream. Do-it-yourselfers used products from many different sources to build their trailers from the plans. This Silver Cloud has the original tag emblem and was produced as trailer No.199. We would truly appreciate anyone with an older Airstream production number on a trailer

to share that information with us. We have heard of an older emblem tag but the trailer no longer exists. We consider the Dr. Holman Torpedo as “home built”. (Read more about this trailer in issue #25 of the VCT Magazine.) It is our belief that both historic trailers survived, because they were shielded with a metal skin at some point. Do-ityourselfers used products from many different sources to build their trailers from the plans.

The 1936 Airstream Silver Cloud was considered to be the leader of the Airstream line at the time. Wally was influenced by plans found in trailers manufactured in England — thus the English Caravan look. Some of the 1936 features of the trailer included a galley at the left of the door, a double bed at the rear [more like a 3/4 bed today], and a

During its restoration process, 70 Price percent of the cabinet material $695 was saved. The door faces, Complete closet, front bed frames, trim, hardware and everything else are original. The hardware has been cleaned and re-plated. 75% of the 1/2 inch plywood is still the same flooring; the only change to the flooring was in the back where a section of four feet was replaced. The bed framing material is all original. The actual structural sides had to be replaced because this particular trailer

was built with 3/8” plywood — not 1/2” which Wally said about some of his other trailers plus 1/8 inch Masonite over that. Someone in the 50s reworked the trailer and put aluminum skin over the exterior original painted Masonite. Underneath, the original framing showed markings of all the windows and

OLD TIN CAN 1959 Shasta Mobile Kitchen

This isn’t Savannah Clark’s first go around with a vintage food trailer. Her first one was a 1948 Kit. (Featured in issue #18 of the VCT Magazine.) Savannah couldn’t stay out of the food truck business for long and has recently rebuilt and converted this 1959 Shasta to yet another mobile kitchen. Based in beautiful Sandpoint, ID, you can find this “Old Tin Can” serving up locally-raised, grass fed beef. Savannah said, “I take pride in serving good quality meat and don’t believe in taking shortcuts.” Every burger is made with a hand pressed patty served on a toasted bun with cheese, lettuce, tomato, grilled onions and secret sauce.

16

The trailer was rebuilt with a hatch on the back to insert and remove equipment as needed. All the equipment is commercial grade and the trailer was built by Brad Clark around the dimensions of the appliances. The trailer has a prep-table, refrigerator, a flat top grill, a chest freezer and a four station sink. “The first time around I had a deep fryer but learned real quick how hot it got in there during summer so decided to introduce ice cream and replace the fries with chips!” Savannah said. The counter top has photos of pinup girls from 1956 and 1957 issues of Frolic Magazine. A great addition for a vintage vibe!

1950 Westcraft By Flyte Camp Featured at SEMA Flyte Camp from Bend, OR recently debuted their 1950 Westcraft Coronado at the 2016 SEMA show in Las Vegas, NV. SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association) gathers together once a year to showcase the country’s greatest in the automotive world. This year, Justin and Anna Scribner were commissioned by their sponsor, Saint-Gobain, to rebuild the 1950 Westcraft Coronado for the SEMA show. It was the first vintage camper to ever be a featured build inside the show! Justin and Anna and their crew at Flyte Camp spent four months and approximately 3000 man (and woman) hours to complete the restoration. The entire trailer was taken down to the frame and rebuilt. The trailer received all new axles, brakes, wiring, in-

sulation, sealing gas lines, plumbing and windows. They also installed a drinking fountain in the bathroom that came from an old 1930’s school house. The interior of the trailer received hours of special attention to recreate the birch paneling and Douglas Fir accents original to the Westcraft Coronado. The floor was covered in green and Eco-friendly, soybased Forbo Marmoleum which closely mimics the original flooring used in vintage camper trailers. Several modern amenities were added to the Coronado to make it a first-class rebuild. There is a hidden surround sound system, a hidden 48” television lift in the living area, a retro-look modern TV in the bedroom, LED lighting. A restroom was added to the original floor-plan.

S E M A, The best place to show it of f Written By: Mike Madriaga Photography: Billy Carlyle, Mike Madriaga and Joe Sebergandio A “Fireball” landed in the middle of the Las Vegas Convention Center but it was not for sale. Joe Sebergandio parked his 1964 Fireball Friendship 11 camper in the front of the South Hall entrance. It was displayed in the ADA-OMIX and Rugged Ridge booth hitched to a 1966 Jeep Wagoneer and surrounded by other Jeeps. “I was asked over a dozen times if I would sell it while at the SEMA Show,” said Joe Sebergandio, “I simply said no.” If one owns a heavily customized vehicle; SEMA is the best place to show it off. There are approximately 1500 show vehicles spread throughout the 2.7 million square feet of display space. The Fireball was one of the only vintage campers present. Sebergandio, from La Crescenta, CA, was here on business as were many of the

other 140,000 attendees of the largest automotive show in the world. He was promoting two of his ventures: “Joe’s Minibike Reunion,” and his podcast with the same name. “I have been nuts over minibikes since I first got my hands on one as a young kid living in upstate New York,” Sebergandio said. Forty-years of knowledge and relationships from the minibike lifestyle, developed into his brand. “… a collection of over a dozen minibikes and the passion to recapture the fun and stories of the past,” was explained on his Facebook page.

22

www.vintagecampertrailers.com

Sebergandio accidentally fused the minibike-and-camper lifestyles two-years-ago. “I found the Fireball in Sun Valley, CA while I was out riding my Honda Grom minibike during the summer of 2014,” he said. Sebergandio recalled that he did not want to pay the original $3,500 asking price (for his trailer). After months of back and forth negotiating, he obtained the camper at a lower-undisclosed price because it needed a lot of work. “I added new floor, frame work, insulation, paneling, paint and electrical work,” Sebergandio said. “I stripped the outside and ultimately had a pro-polisher get the outside to where it is now.” Sebergandio also made sure that the camper was functional and safe to trailer – he said that (prior to his refurbishing) it had been sitting since the 1980s. “The original axle bearings were bad and I couldn’t find them anywhere,” Sebergandio said. “I ended up replacing the entire axle with a new one.” Continued on page 31

1970 Avalon A 60th wedding anniversary, a grandchild and man’s best friends have all shared in the joy of this just restored Tennessee trailer

At the age of 54, Diane Hopkins decided that she wanted to restore a vintage camper trailer. She, along with help from her eight year old grandson, Connor Lance Hopkins, tackled the restoration project with gusto. After making sure the 1970 Avalon was structurally sound, Diane started decorating the interior of her trailer. Diane loves her family and her two Scottish Terriers. She incorporated her two loves into every aspect of the restoration. She even epoxied her table with pictures of her dogs and family and trimmed it out with chrome edging as the pictures bring her joy each time she looks at them. Diane also incorporated several family heirlooms into the trailer. Her grandparent’s headboard is used as the back of the long bench that makes into a bed and her other grandparent’s wooden ironing board is used as an outdoor table when Diane is camping. Diane’s parents’ 60th wedding anniversary happened to coincide with Diane’s maiden voyage in her Avalon. With Rock Island State Park (Tennessee) just 10 minutes from her home, Diane had towed her trailer up and invited her parents to join her for a celebratory dinner: sixty years

of marriage and the first of many family meals shared in her vintage Avalon. With so much love and determination poured into the Avalon, Diane has no designs on selling this special piece. She is enjoying camping with both Conner and her Scottish Terriers, Malcom Jessie and Paisley Faith. She did give some sage advice for those camping with dogs. She suggests leaving a radio on low during the night so the dogs cannot hear when the raccoons knock the lids off the trash cans. “That way, the dogs won’t wake up and scare you to death barking like there is a bear outside!

Sebergandio also placed some attention into the aesthetics of the build: he added the roof vent, a new canopy, tinted and tempered rear glass, clean screens, updated wheels and Coker whitewall tires. Not everything on the Fireball needed an update. “The three-burner stove was in great shape, as was the ice box,” Sebergandio said. He explained that the overhaul took about a year and that over $10,000 was invested in parts and labor. He added that his “Friendship 11” buddies helped him out – or the renovation would have cost considerably more. The 11-foot-long camper is a multi-purpose unit. “I have camped out in it twice – on the Pacific Coast Highway and in Southern California,” Sebergandio said, “and it was used as our store for my annual minibike show to sell apparel and used as a backdrop for my podcast.” Measuring 6 feet wide and almost 8 feet tall at stock height; the camper-trailer combo is perfect for Sebergandio. “People love small or mini anything nowadays,” he said.

HOW TO

INSULATE

Don’t Forget the Floors By John Abbott Retro R.V.s There is no one right answer to the question of how to insulate the floor of your trailer. In some canned hams, there just is not much room. Rigid foam insulation can be glued to the underside of the floor with spray adhesive. We stay away from sprayed-in foam insulation (in the walls too). It glues everything together and makes future maintenance a bear. RetroRVs also puts on aluminum belly pans when the budget allows. It makes the biggest difference in how warm the floor stays. RetroRVs uses mostly fiberglass batt insulation under the floors (the pink stuff). It’s what Airstream used after all. When we do a shell-off floor replacement, we unroll the insulation parallel to the frame members (front to back) with the paper side up. This provides enough vapor barrier yet still lets the wood sub-floor dry out, should it get wet somehow. We then lay 3/4-inch marine plywood on top (the sub floor) and secure it to the frame with elevator bolts. You may have to pre-drill the holes, depending on the frame. Before we install the belly pan, we cut

32

through the fiberglass part of the insulation on each side of the frame members. This way it can “puff” down into the belly. The pink stuff is easy to get and 3-1/2 inches works out fine in a typical 4” belly space.

trailer. Secure the belly pan with large flange 3/16th-inch blind aluminum rivets (Vintage Trailer Supply has them) to the frame. Don’t use any sealant on the belly pan because if water gets in there, you want it to be able to drain out.

As for belly pan material, we use .025 5052 H32 aluminum. It is thick enough yet it bends around all the corners easily. RetroRVs convinced Airparts Inc (Airpartsinc.com) to carry this aluminum in a 48inch wide coil. Order two pieces the length of your trailer plus a foot. The good folks at Airparts will coil it up and ship it to you in a box (or two) via FedEx. This lets you put on the belly pan from front to back in a single piece with just one seam down the middle of your

Here’s a trick that will save you a lot of time. Make a replica of the front frame of your trailer out of 2x4s and screw them to a scrap piece of plywood cut to match

the curve of the sub-floor. You now have a jig to fashion the front of your belly pan (without lying on your back under your trailer). Place the front of the belly pan on top of the jig and anchor it with a couple of screws. Now make all the cuts and bends to fit the front of your trailer. Then when you drag in under your trailer, it will be ready to fit into place. Do the same for the back if needed (but if you do this you will need a seam across the belly pan towards the back of the frame). Be sure to put the back piece of the belly pan on first so the seam will face backwards. If you do a really good job of fitting the belly pan on nice and tight, you may want to consider drilling a few drain holes in it. Should water get into the belly pan, remember you want a way for it to drain out! With all the time and love you are putting into it, you’ll want your restoration project to last another 50 years.

1964 Holiday Rambler Trav’ler The bones were good, mostly she was just tired.

By Scot Thompson In November of 1964 Betsy-Rose, as we now call our booty trailer, became part of the Lillard family. The 17.5’ Holiday Trav’ler gaucho model with a bath was the middle of the three model offerings from Holiday Rambler Corp. for that year. Originally bought by Ray and Betsy in Virginia, the Lillards soon moved to North Carolina. For the next fifty years Betsy-Rose was traded between two brothers, Ray and Al, and their spouses, Betsy and Rose. All throughout those years other family members also used B-R for trips and temporary quarters but it always stayed within the same family. Betsy-Rose was resplendent with her aqua stripes over white paint and aqua appliances complementing the warm birch of the interior. Capable of sleeping five, with a gaucho, convertible table and an overhead bunk, B-R saw lots of the country… Florida Keys, Georgia, both Carolinas and all through the South. The biggest camping trip came in 1978 when Al, Rose, Ray and Betsy hitched B-R up to their Ford van and headed west from North Carolina travelling to California and up the coast to Washington to visit friends, explore our great country and visit the National Parks. Betsy-Rose covered 8692 miles in all over 5 weeks.

Campgrounds cost $6 per night back then! Eventually, B-R came to rest under a carport at Rose’s home in the North Carolina mountains and there it served the grandchildren as sleeping quarters for many years as health issues overcame Al and Ray. Sometimes the adults still had

old trailer projects are a labor of love as most of you know. Here are some highlights from our labors with Betsy-Rose. Some floor tiles outside the bath were damaged from a leak and we replaced them with unblemished tiles from under the gaucho. Now the entire visible floor is of original 9” tiles. We cleaned and waxed the original interior birch paneling until it just exuded a warm amber glow. We made new kitchen drawers of solid birch to replace originals ruined by mice. We refurbished all the original appliances including the Brown Stove Works oven, the 4 cu. ft. Dometic refrigerator Holiday Rambler is still in business today under new ownership. The original founder, (don’t let anyone tell you Richard Klingler and his son Doug, participate in the Vintage Holiday Rambler discusthese absorption refrigsion...we get advice on our old trailers from the founder!! erators are not re-buildable), the Coleman wall heater, all the original card games in her, but B-R was getting condition. She was still plugged in and dual voltage lamps and the Humphrey old and tired and neglected and no one hooked up! Yes there was mouse dam- propane lamp, all the plumbing and took her anywhere any more. After 50 age along with mold and mildew and on and on. Readers know the effort it years of ownership, Rose, now in her frozen pipes and insects and most of takes. nineties, sold B-R to us, her neighbors. the appliances had given up. But the bones were good and the leaks not too With new 15X2.25 LR E “radial shoes” We think of B-R as a refurbishment severe; mostly she was just tired. We (and an update to the brakes and bearrather than a restoration because so thought we could bring her back; and ings) and Betsy-Rose was ready for her much was original and in salvageable so that is what we set out to do! original black tank only holds 5 gallons, and there was no gray water tank back in the day. We simply use a portable waste tank. Complete with a shower and toilet and full cooking facilities, B-R is a delight to camp in. Dry camping is very easy as most appliances run off propane. The amazingly quiet Coleman wall heater provides plenty of heat. There is no power converter as Holiday Rambler’s design incorporated two 15-amp 110VAC circuits and a separate 12 VDC circuit that we charge from the truck. Interior cooling was via open windows, so for this summer season, we will add a hidden air conditioner. Our adventure with B-R has required lots of effort and yet has given us lots of satisfaction in visible progress. B-R appears very nearly like she did 50 years ago, both inside and out. We are pretty proud of that. a ball in the late summer of 2015 camping with the Southern Vintage Trailers folks in Hiwassee, GA. While visitors loved her insides, Betsy-Rose seriously needed a facelift like most of us at this age! Sometime in the 1980s, Al and Ray had painted her with tan enamel and covered up all the vintage zigzag lines. Good paint job, bad complexion! So with early photos provided by Rose, we sanded, masked, primed and re-painted her with acrylic urethane to the original colors. We added the broad swath of aqua around the windows as seen on the period advertisements for Holiday Rambler. B-R simply had aqua lines above and below the windows. We are members of a website where the original founders of Holiday Rambler and their son, Doug, participate (the Richard Klingler family). With help from them and other members of the Vintage Holiday Ramblers, we stayed true to a factory paint scheme as well as with the interior refurbishment. We even had replicas of the original Holiday Trav’ler emblems and stickers made. And as the crowning statement, we had a silhouette decal made of Betsy and Rose; hence the moniker, Betsy-Rose! Rose was quite a seamstress and still is. Thirty years ago, she made new cushion covers that we saved. She also re-made the original curtains by re-using the loop trim with new fabric. After dry-cleaning them, we added the aqua frill on the bottom edge to tie the fabric and aqua appliances and seat cushions together. In the booty we found the striped awning that Rose said had only been used one time! We updated the plumbing to a demand pump system and we adapted the original brass fixture for the city water inlet; it’s quite a piece of nostalgia. With the addition of a winterization valve B-R antifreeze is now easily added. The

But the best part of this adventure with Betsy-Rose has been Betsy and Rose themselves! They share our adventure with their families. When they both came along with their families to see the finished paint, complete with custom stickers we made of their silhouettes… well they just beamed! And that was reward enough for all our efforts. Scot and Sonja Thompson (left) live in the far western mountains of North Carolina. They are long-time campers. Coca Cola has something for everyone to

ENJOY

Article by: “Heffron’s A Moment In Time Retro Design”

The New Coca-Cola Perhaps one of our most popular collectibles is Coca-Cola memorabilia. This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise though. Some consider the 1950’s as the golden age of Coca Cola. But with Pepsi growing as a competitor, life for Coke wasn’t always easy. In fact the Coca Cola company and its fans would soon learn that you don’t truly know what you have until it’s gone.

si was banking on, and it turns out it was a wise decision because most people did prefer the taste of Pepsi to Coke and by the 80s Pepsi was outselling Coke in supermarkets. Now before you get upset, the Pepsi Challenge isn’t a perfect science. Because while most people prefer the first sip of Pepsi, other studies have shown that it when it comes to drinking a full can, Coca Cola is the true winner. Most people didn’t realize that though, and neither did Coke. They simply saw that the marketing for Pepsi was working and Coke was losing. This called for dramatic action from Coke and one that could have ended badly.

Up For The Challenge Have you ever tried the Pepsi Challenge? For those who haven’t, the idea is pretty simple. It’s a blind taste test between Pepsi and Coke to see which people like better. All you have to do is take a sip of both. But what if I said even the most diehard Coca Cola drinkers might choose Pepsi? That’s exactly what Pep-

A New Coke Is Born Coke made a change to its formula and New Coke was born. The results were not pretty. The backlash was huge and Coke received over 250,000 letters from people complaining. Consumers even started creating protest groups such as the “Old Cola Drinkers of America” to show their displeasure. Begging for the classic taste to return and worried that their children would never know the true refreshment of original Coke. Senior leadership had no choice but to admit they were wrong. But instead of sticking to their guns, they made the right decision. The original formula returned and would be known as “Coca-Cola Classic”. All was right in the world again, at

least when it came to soda. New Coke would continue to be sold, although that would come to an end in 2002.

Coca Cola Phenomenon The New Coke fiasco became a key example of how consumers think, react, and spend. In fact there are even conspiracy theories on how Coke might have changed the formula in order to create a higher demand for the original product and in return cause a huge spike in sales. But regardless if you think this was a mistake by Coca Cola or a grand marketing scheme, today Coca-Cola is the leader in soda and people have a special place in their heart for the brand. Fans can purchase everything from large items like Tables, Stools, Booths, and Chairs for their vintage trailer, to odds and end items that they can collect and show off such as glasses or napkin holders. Regardless of how serious of a collector you are, Coca Cola has something for everyone to enjoy, including the soda itself.

Wrapping Up Coca-Cola has come a long way since the 1950’s and luckily for us, the Coca Cola we all know and love is here to stay. At Heffron’s we encourage you to show off your passion and build your own Coca-Cola or 1950’s collection. Let A Moment in Time Retro Design assist you with all of your furniture and décor needs. When it comes to your vintage camper or home, your decorating options are endless and we can’t wait to see what you come up with. Good luck with your projects and remember, for all of your retro furniture needs head over to www.Heffrons. com. We look forward to hearing from you!
