Five Star Plus!!! Steve and his company demonstrate what customer service should look like. Thanks so much! -Glenn I recently purchased all of the siding, trim and entry door for an 1970 11’ foot trailer that I rebuilt using only the metal frame of the original trailer. I contacted Steve at Hemet Valley RV and sent him a side view of the trailer with the dimensions on it. Steve figured out what material I needed and the amount and sent it. Everything that I needed I received in a timely fashion and it was packaged in very strong boxes...Thanks so much for the great job Steve, I have no doubt that your business will have continued success, Great Job. -Wayne M.

This issue (#30) marks five full years of publishing the Vintage Camper Trailers Magazine. Many of you have been subscribers since we were a newsprint tabloid. Your continued support is what has allowed us to grow the rag into its current glossy form. With this issue, we are investing in our mailing process to do everything we can to insure your magazine arrives in good condition. The plastic cover will keep your magazines dry, clean and tear free. We are also implementing new subscriber management software that will improve how we handle subscriptions. (You’ll have to talk to your carrier about folding.) The magazine, book(s) and rallies that we host have become a full-time business for Caroline and me. We wouldn’t have it any other way. The people we have met and those that support us with ideas and contributions to the magazine are what make it fun. Advertisers that invest their profits to help support a niche magazine constantly impress me with their loyalty. Many have been with us for years. We especially thank all of you that tell your friends about the magazine or pass out our handouts at rallies to let others know about us. From day one we wanted our magazine to focus on rescuing, restoring and rallying with vintage American trailers. Not trying to be all things to all people, we offer a variety of articles and pictorials that address what we think are the three “R’s” of the hobby that attracted most of us hobbyists to the vintage lifestyle. Setting ourselves apart by being a printed magazine in a world of online blogs, websites and social media. While we participate in all that fun (with well over 650,000 followers) the magazine is something you can keep and flip through anytime, anywhere. Our family owned business has allowed us to teach our two children about business, customer service and public speaking. Caroline and I have developed a handful of “talks” that we do at libraries, schools, car-clubs, rallies and historical groups. We speak to the history of the American trailering industry through the modern rally. Other talks cover buying and selling trailers, hosting rallies and doing what you love and loving what you do. We are amazed the interest we have with audiences from 12 to 92. It is a testament to the connection that many have with the past, camping and family. Those that approach us after the talks consistently comment on our passion for the hobby that comes through in our presentation. That appetite for continuing to improve ourselves and our business is what makes all the long hours’ worth it. Three Things You May Not Know About the Vintage Camper Trailers Magazine: 1. We have subscribers in every state in the USA and a dozen foreign countries. 2. The magazine is based in Northern California but is printed and mails out of Missouri. 3. We have never missed a deadline or not mailed on time.

H OL I DAY H O U S E For the Love of Learning Speaking with Mike and Jody O’Dell about how they became interested in Vintage camper trailers soon lead me to understand that they love a challenge and there is nothing they can’t overcome. This is the couple that has literally done everything! Certified rug hooking enthusiast, business owners, interior designer, tool and die maker, electrical engineer, Marine (Presidential Helicopter Squadron for Ronald Reagan), electrician, parents, linesman, car test driver, seamstress, tax accountant, as well as accomplished vintage camper trailer restorers - I think that just about covers SOME of what they’ve accomplished in their lives.

While spending numerous weekends in the car waiting for Mike while he was racing his bike, Jody mentioned that a little trailer might make her wait a bit more comfortable. Mike thought that sounded good and they started looking for a trailer. Jody found a 1946 Curtis Wright for sale. It was a total wreck and Jody said she learned what to do by doing it wrong the first time. The Curtis Wright had to be completely rebuilt – including having the frame welded and replacing the springs. But, Jody and Mike persevered and found that they loved their new old trailer and the people they met in the hobby. And Then There Were Two...
Until Now, Only One was Thought to Have Survived
If you google “Holiday House Geographic”, you will find several versions of the history of these rare trailers. What is known is that David Holmes, the president of “Harry and David” (mail-order fruit baskets and gifts) was looking for ways to keep his workers busy during the January to July “off season”. He decided to have his workers build a new travel trailer with a very modern design. Holmes’ new “Holiday House” travel trailers were based on the standard aluminum skin over a wood frame construction, but the overall styling was very
8
modern and “space age”. They were much different than the more familiar “canned ham” styles being produced in the late 1950’s. “Holiday House” trailer production began at the Medford, Oregon plant on November 2, 1959 and reached full production level by February 1960. In February of 1960, the completed Showroom Model of “GEOGRAPHIC”, one of only five-manufactured Fiberglass trailers, was shipped to Van Nuys, California to be introduced to the world

during one of the largest trailer shows in the country. In 1958 and during the preliminary design phase, this trailer was named “Star Craft”. Later marketing referred to it as Model ”X”, and ultimately it was introduced to the public as “Geographic”. (Another account says: “Less than 10 Geographics were ever made.” I was told that it is thought that five were completed but the other trailer bodies were never completely built and were eventually destroyed at the factory.) 1941 VAGABOND The preservation of this 1940’s Masonite Vagabond, one of two known to exist, was so incredible that the Katkowskys decided not to restore this trailer, but simply preserve it. While lecturing on a cruise ship bound for New Zealand in late 2011, Steve Katkowsky and his wife Jenay received an email from their trailer buddy, Henry in Kentucky saying, “Hey Steve, you may be interested in this.” Henry was correct. Steve and Jenay were interested in the Masonite-sided Vagabond. However, they had no way to contact the owner while at sea. Departing the airport after a long flight home from New Zealand, Steve convinced Jenay to call the seller and see if the trailer was still available. Unbelievably, the trailer was still for sale.
10

Rather than heading home, they denied their exhaustion and drove five hours in the opposite direction to take a peek at this rare Vagabond. Discovering the story behind a vintage trailer is golden. Steve is great at finding these stories and he is careful to preserve them. He found that this Masonite-sided trailer was purchased by the original owner in early 1941.The owner needed a place to kick back while he spent the next three months building his house. He built the shed seen in the photos around the trailer to protect it. He basically

never used the trailer except to sleep on the couch. When his house was finished, the trailer just sat there for 72 years, under cover, never to leak. When Steve found the Vagabond, the original owner had been gone for 6 years and the new property owners were looking to clear the trailer and its shed off their property. Steve and the current owner reached a deal and the trailer belonged to the Katkowskys. With a little help from his buddy, Desmond, Steve moved the trailer to his museum, Steven Katkowsky’s Vintage Trailer Museum, in Ben Lomand, CA where it has been on display in Steve’s museum for the past 5 years.

This One Can Be Yours! It isn’t very often that I sell something, especially one of my favorite trailers. Well, “very often” has come. I am selling my very rare 1941 Vagabond. The story of the trailer can be seen on my website www.vintagetrailermuseum.com. This 1941Vagabond has been under cover since new. If you look closely at the interior photos, it is near perfect! Nothing in this trailer has ever been refinished. That is just unbelievable. The original Vagabond id tag shows the trailer as a 1940. It must have been a late production number and registered as a 1941. When I found the trailer in the Gold Country in California, it was missing the heater. And the original Coleman stove was missing the grates and some parts. It took a little bit of searching, but I located an original DuoTherm heater, the same one pictured in the original factory brochure. As for the stove, I found a matching stove with the missing pieces. The upholstery on the original click clack couch was not in such great shape. It may be hard to believe but I located material that is extremely close to one of the factory photos. The outside of the trailer is different colors because it was painted over the years reaching through the lattice work on the outside of the shed where it was housed. The Masonite is a little warped on one side and a little in the front. There is virtually no visible rot. There are two very small repairs in the original linoleum floor. In the trunk, there seems to be a little water damage but nothing I would even fix. It has the original pull out step with VAGABOND embossed in the steel. And better yet, try finding a matching set of VAGABOND hub caps with the name embossed on them. This trailer is rare—it’s complete. It’s the nicest original 1940 Masonite Vagabond I’ve ever seen. Happy Campers There was more than humor and hard work in creating these little campers; there was a bit of true Americana. Florida is one of those special places where people have long dreamed of escaping to during the winter months. They arrive looking to discover endless coastal beaches, hidden waterways, and warm sub-tropical weather. Made of shiny metal and steel, many sport nomadic campers and RV’s wandered south year after year to visit the Sunshine State. It has been a long-running love affair of sorts. At Saint Andrew’s School, a private college-preparatory day and boarding school located right in the heart of Boca Raton, Florida, the history of the humble ‘little camper’ has not gone unnoticed. An instructor in the School’s Visual Arts Department, Ron Garrett, decided to design simple paper templates, which could be traced, cut out, scored, and folded to-gether, creating the general teardrop shape of a typical camper. His templates were starting points, leaving room for students to investigate their own vision with a wide range of results.
16
www.vintagecampertrailers.com
The assignment was called “HAPPY CAMPERS,” and it involved studio foundation classes, mostly 9th and 10th graders. Students researched manufactured trailer campers, dating all the way back to the 1940’s. Each student then selected a camper for inspiration, which formed the basis of his or her paper sculpture design. It could be a classic Airstream, or a Shasta, or a completely mysterious model. To Mr. Garrett’s relief, the kids rallied around the idea, as he watched, the students shared techniques and developed a sense of pride, craftsmanship, and accomplishment. Ultimately, there was more than humor and hard work in creating these little campers; there was a bit of true Americana.

MARRYING A NEED, ART, AND COMMUNITY SERVICE
Together
vintage trailer help give the opportunity to space, out of
inspired pods homeless the have their own the elements
In the early 1900’s, Oak Park in Sacramento, CA was a culturally thriving and economically vibrant, destination neighborhood. By the 1960’s, the Interstate freeway expansion program subdivided many historic Sacramento neighborhoods like Oak Park, creating isolated areas of poverty or relative prosperity. Oak Park’s sense of community started to decline in the early 1960’s because of the freeway expansion. Declining property values were inevitable as
families moved out to the new suburb communities that were made more accessible by the freeway expansion. During the 1980’s and 90’s further deterioration of the living standards was exacerbated by frequent occurrences of petty theft, street crime, drug activities and gang-related violence. Recently, real estate speculators and building contractors have been buying up low-priced homes in parts of Oak Park that were either abandoned or sold off as unmanageable. They are turning them around and reselling them as reasonably priced starter homes. Kevin Greenberg and Aimee Phelps are neighbors in Oak Park. They also saw opportunity in their own “back yard”. With about $18,000, raised through a GoFundMe campaign and local business’ support, these community entrepreneurs are giving shelter to those who have been living on the streets for years. They see the homeless as part of the community

in Oak Park. Their vintage trailer-inspired pods help give the homeless the opportunity to have their own space, out of the elements. Phelps and Greenberg came up with the idea of portable “pods,” designed like mini travel trailers. They covered them in vibrant, one-of-a-kind paint jobs that look like art. These tiny sleeping shelters are built on two-wheeled frames, sized to fit within a parking space and engineered to be moved easily. The idea for a mobile pod is based on Sacramento’s 72-hour parking code ordinance. “Vehicles are not allowed to park on the street, in the same location, for more than 72 hours.” Pod recipients are advised to move their shelter every three days. Greenberg and Phelps came up with the idea, designed the pods and have built and delivered about 10 of the portable shelters to Oak Park’s homeless people. Each one is an insulated sleeping shelter that holds a foam mattress, pillow and blanket. There’s even a broom and trash can to help keep the unit tidy. Making one pod requires about $250 in supplies and 10 hours of labor. Recycled materials, such as the wheels, brake and handles from donated wheelchairs are used. Initially, the mobile housing units were designed to be towed by bicycle. A handle allows the pod to be “walked” to a new location. This is one of several evolutions to the original design, as not all
recipients have bicycles. The pods have a welded steel frame, a plywood floor and insulation. Instead of bicycle wheels, (like in the original design), Greenberg switched to harvesting used wheelchairs – an item that has proved to be both expensive and tough to find. In September, 2016, Phelps and Greenberg built the first pod and delivered it to Gwen, a homeless woman in Oak Park. “Giving that first pod away was amazing,” Phelps says. “That’s my favorite part: to see the joy and love and being able to raise somebody up — to lift them off the ground, literally. It makes me sad I didn’t do something sooner.” “We don’t just give them something and walk away,” Phelps says. “We befriend them. We see their humanness. We’re still trying to figure out where to go next and how many pods to build,” says Greenberg, a project manager for a web development company who also builds art-bicycles on his own time in his garage. “We don’t want to inundate Oak Park, and we know there are many other areas with needs.” Phelps sees the project growing into “Pod Nation”. “If we can bring everybody together, that would be the best part,” she says. “What you’re doing is marrying a need, art and community service together.”

While at Modernism Week in Palm Springs in 2014, Mike and Jody saw a Holiday House. Mike mentioned that he would like to have a trailer he could stand up in and commented that if they found a Holiday House he wouldn’t mind owning another vintage trailer. That was as good as a green light for Jody. She came home and started searching for a Holiday House. She found a listing on EBAY for “Holiday House Lug Nuts.” Not sure they were even buying an entire Holiday House, the O’Dells decided to purchase what they hoped was an entire trailer

1946 Curtis Wright sellers. Making a hasty retreat back to civilization, they discovered that the wheel on the Holiday House was a mere bump away from coming off the trailer. After replacing the tire, they made it to Tim and Linda Brown’s shop where the Holiday House spent the next year being restored. Under the leadership of veteran restorers, Tim and Linda Brown, the O’Dell’s have spent countless hours of labor restoring the Holiday House. With her degree and background in interior design, Jody knew how she wanted her trailer to look. She had a vision and spent hours sourcing material that would help make her vision a reality. WEATHER-PROOFING YOUR VINTAGE TRAILER
Our how-to articles come from the guys that are restoring trailers. I have done my own trailer restorations for a decade and still run in to issues that I need help with. Additionally, I receive dozens of emails each month asking for advice on different aspects of the restoration process. Some I can help with based on my experiences but I also turn to the many professional restorers I know and trust. When it came to the use of sealants and water proofing trailers I got some help from John Abbott of Retro RV’s in Phoenix, AZ (www.retrorvs.com) and Scott and Wendy Campbell of Retroluxe Vintage Trailers, El Dorado, CA (www.retroluxevintagetrailers.com). Both of these shops shared their expertise with us here and can also help you service your trailer if you don’t want to attempt it yourself.
I typically stay away from trailers that have been sealed with silicone. Our current restoration is a 1955 Spartan. At some point it appears a window was removed to install an AC unit. Silicone was gooped around the window and was very difficult to remove. I found a replacement window from Dan at www.vintagecampers. com, but I had to figure out how to install it so it would keep out the elements. We have had extraordinary amounts of rain in California this year that has helped us discover some leaks we didn’t know we had. Lastly there was dialogue on our Facebook page concerning the use of silicone to seal trailers. I reached out to the pro’s and here is what we learned...
PRO TIP: FINDING LEAKS
PRO TIP: VIRTUES OF VULKEM
Don’t wait until you have warped, rotten or moldy panels. By the time you see leaks on interior panels, chances are you also have rot in the frame work of your wood framed trailers.
The only sealant we use is Vulkem. It’s called TremPro 635 from Tremco. (What marketing genius thought that was better than Vulkem? So we call it Vulkem.) Why do we ONLY use Vulkem? Because it’s what Airstream used back in the day, and when we pull apart a 50-year-old trailer we alway find the Vulkem soft and pliable. Why mess with a good thing? What else is proven to last that long?
We do pressurized tests to find leaks and then verify that we fixed them. There’s a fancy tool, or you can use a large “squirrel” fan rolled up to the door. Seal the rest of the doorway opening using brown paper & blue tape and turn on the fan. Spray the outside of seams & windows & such with a soap solution. Large bubbles will form for the smallest leaks. Take pictures of the bubbles on your phone to reference while sealing. Rinse off the trailer and let it dry before grabbing the Vulkem and syringe. Let the Vulkem dry overnight before retesting.
26
Restorers buy Vulkem by the case, but most individuals will need only 2-3 tubes. Vintage Trailer Supply has the best price. They also sell syringes we use to apply Vulkem to seams. Pull out the plunger, squirt it into the back, and run down each seam. Get your speed and squeeze right and there is no wiping needed.
www.vintagecampertrailers.com
TremPro 635 is the modern version of the legendary Vulkem polyurethane sealant. It is a technologically advanced no-VOC silylated polyurethane. It meets or surpass the performance of the old polyurethanes like Vulkem and Sikaflex 221 in transportation applications in every meaningful way. It utilizes a solvent-free technology, which represents technical advances over existing polyurethane systems. TremPro 635 is specially designed for use as a topical sealant in the fabrication of trailers, trucks, campers, buses, trains and specialty vehicles. TremPro 635 demonstrates excellent physical properties regarding adhesion, vibration, movement, shear strength and weather-ability.” www.vintagetrailersupply.com
PRO TIP: BUTYL PUTTY A pliable non-hardening 100% butyl mastic is a superior replacement for the original non-butyl putty tape used on vintage travel trailers. It is tacky and, unlike old fashioned putty tape, does not harden over time. It is used when installing moldings, windows, doors and vents. It waterproofs overlapping metal and seals around fasteners when they are inserted through the tape. The gray putty tape comes in 30 feet rolls and can be trimmed to width with a utility knife. Available in 4 different dimensions: 1/2” x 1/16” thick 3/4” x 1/16” thick 1/2” x 1/16” thick 3/4” x 1/16” thick Available from Vintage Trailer Supply and Harps RV.
HOW THE PRO’S DO IT
My experience goes back to 1981, my first job out of school was with a trailer and mobile home repair company. We always had success with rubberized polymer type sealants, we avoided sealers that were oil based like Plasticoat or Cool seal. They were difficult to use and dried out within a couple of years. The brands that we used then are no longer available, but we have found excellent alternatives.
This is How We Seal Vintage Trailers at Retroluxe: (Yes we do use silicone but as the last step in our trailer sealing process.)
1. When sealing windows, doors, roof vents and drip rails, first we completely clean the area to be sealed by removing all old sealant, silicone and dirt. Next, We use lacquer thinner to remove any old wax or oils left behind. We have tried other solvents like denatured alcohol, acetone, wax and grease removers and found Lacquer thinner to work best because it cleans great, removes everything and completely evaporates. Most trailer paint is either baked enamel or a paint that will tolerate limited exposure to lacquer thinner. 2. Resealing drip rails, prior to installing the drip rails we apply Trem Pro 635 Polyurethane to the area that will be covered by the drip rail, we cover the roof edge seam,(where the top skin is folded over the side walls) staples and screw holes. Trem Pro 635 is available from Vintage Trailer Supply, it comes only in gray, not a problem since it will be covered by the drip rail. 3. We attach the new or cleaned drip rail, windows, and vents using Butyl tape, note using butyl tape in warm or hot weather is a nightmare it will stick to everything and get everywhere and is a major pain to clean up once it sticks, so we always store butyl tape in the fridge and keep it cold it makes handling that stuff very easy, after rails are installed preferably while it is still cold we trim off the squeeze out. SILICONE MYTHOLOGY
Despite common mythology, silicone sealants are safe for aluminum and do have an important (but narrow) place in vintage trailer restoration. While we recommend using only polyurethanes (like TremPro 635 and 636) for most applications, silicone works better in a few applications. Here are a few examples:
Restoring, and then maintaining your vintage trailer to stay dry on the inside will help you sleep better at night even if the weather changes.
HOW THE PRO’S DO IT Continued from previous page.
4. Is the final step, here is where we use silicone. First using masking tape we mask a clean straight line about 1/8 from the top corner of the roof to the drip rail. On most can ham vintage trailers the drip rails are bare aluminum, we have found that using aluminum colored silicone is the way to go, once the silicone is applied, smoothed by using your pointer finger with appropriate gloves and the masking tape is removed, you have a very clean looking sealed drip rail. this method can also be applied to windows, vents, doors and any other place where sealing bare aluminum is needed. We try not to use white or clear silicone as much as possible due to it looking dirty and discolored within a short period of time. This is how we at Retroluxe get it done. With limited shop space we have to store trailers in progress outside and very happily we have not found leaks in any of the trailers that we have been sealed this way.
28
www.vintagecampertrailers.com
1. Use as a plastic to metal adhesive (like applying the finish bead to Fan-Tastic vents and fans). 2. Use as a glass to metal adhesive (like bedding 1966 and 1967 Airstream Corning glass). 3. Use as a weatherstrip adhesive for silicone rubber weatherstrips and gaskets. 4. Use as a caulk when doing plumbing with kitchen and bath fixtures. It is sometimes difficult to find silicone RTV in aluminum color. To help with vintage trailer restoration, we sell quality TremPro 644 silicone RTV in aluminum color only. TremPro 644 RTV is a one-part, acetoxy silicone sealant that cures to a flexible rubber when exposed to moisture present in the air. It has a vinegar odor when first applied. TremPro 644 RTV is specially designed for sealant joints between most non-porous materials such as glass, aluminum, metal and metal alloys. www.vintagetrailersupply.com
GLAZING WINDOWS
PRO TIP: THE CAPTAIN Captain Tolley’s Creeping Crack Cure may sound like an old fashioned remedy, but it is actually an up-to-date solution to an age old problem: the finding and fixing of mystery leaks without having to take everything apart. It is a onepart water-based acrylic co-polymer penetrating sealant. The Creeping Crack Cure is so thin that using capillary action it can find its way right inside fine seams and joints to set to a clear flexible seal. It is a totally different approach than most sealants. Being thinner than water, it goes where the water goes. It can find its way right into hairline cracks and hair-thin seams where other sealants cannot reach. It traces mystery leaks. The rapid absorption of the sealant into the seam indicates the potential leak. Even excellent conventional sealants cannot do that. There’s no need to remove old sealants. You just apply the sealant along the line of a crack or joint until no more is absorbed. It is waterbased and non-toxic. Available from www.vintagetrailersupply.com
GLAZING TAPE Sealing windows from rain and wind is a whole “how-to” article all it’s own. A wide variety of gaskets, weatherstripping, foam and rubber seals are available to rebuild your vintage windows. Don’t ignore the Drip Caps. Sealing them to the trailer with butyl tape will help keep water from penetrating your windows. This premium butyl glass bedding tape is more in-line with the components we are covering in this article. Glazing Tape is only 1/4” wide and 1/16” thick. Its small dimensions make it very hard to find in local stores. It works perfectly placed between the glass and the aluminum front frame of the window on Hehr windows used on most Airstreams from 1958 to 1965. A 50’ spool will do several windows. Since it is self-adhesive, it requires no additional adhesives to attach. The tape is black, but the tape will be entirely hidden behind a glazing strip on most windows, so the color does not matter.
PRO TIP: TAKE IT OFF
Silicon is mildly corrosive to aluminum. It’s also nearly impossible to remove. Auto body & paint stores have products or a product like Motsenbockers Silicone Remover can be found at a home improvement store. It is a water-based gel formula that will remove fresh or cured sealants and is biodegradable. These products will wear away most of the silicone. You may also try bug and tar remover from an automotive paint store. Plastic razor blade scrapers and some elbow grease, seems to help to remove silicone. Always follow label instructions and make sure they are safe to use on whatever material you are removing silicone from. Maintenance is the main reason not to use silicone. Vulkem cleans off more easily, (except for your clothes!) The removal process takes time and can be costly if you are paying a shop to do it.

And Then There Were Two... Continued from page 10 The Geographic’s expensive price tag of $8,495 (In 1960 you could buy a house for $13,000), was likely the reason no units were sold. In 1962 the Showroom Model was sold to Joyce Woodin, the showroom manager, for $5,000. She kept all the original sales and service receipts and brochures that came with the trailer. The story is that in 1999 a Los Angeles architect named Bardy Azadmard bought the trailer and spent a decade restoring it with help from Iowa Boys LLC and Wayne Butters. After the trailer was completed, it toured some RV shows until it was sold to someone (in 2011) for a reported six figure sum, and it then shipped to France. Until recently, it was thought to be the only survivor.
A toy the size of a stapler made in Italy BEFORE the production of the Geographic. (???) In 2016 another one turned up. The owner was storing car parts in it and was willing to entertain selling it. Justin Scribner of Flyte Camp found out about it and was interested in acquiring the only other (known to date) surviving Geographic. Justin and his wife Anna were able to make a deal with the previous owners and trailered this rare jewel back to Flyte Camp in Bend, OR. The trailer is gutted and will need a complete restoration. Justin has agreed to keep us posted with the build and we will continue to update you with the project and pictures as we receive them.

When asked if he planned on selling the trailer when it was finished, Justin (out of ear shot of Anna) said “I haven’t told Anna yet, but I would have a hard time letting this one go.” He went on to tell me it would be nice to see it in a museum where everyone could enjoy it. Pictured Right: Ready for restoration at Flyte Camp. Gutted and in need of fiberglass repairs. The original fiberglass molds survived a factory fire at Harry & David on June 17, 1962, but they were discarded in 1985 when the company was acquired. Left: HH Factory pictures.

Tools & Tips We are restoring a 1955 Spartan and came across a couple of tools and tips to share. We restore our own trailers and try to do most of the work ourselves. We do turn to friends for help and advice in an attempt to do things the right way the first time. After considering several different types of insulation options, we decided to use R-Tech 1-1/2 in. x 4 ft. x 8 ft. R-5.78 Rigid Foam Insulation. It is the same thickness as the wall “studs” and it seemed like the best solution for this project. Thinking we would take advantage of the very rainy weather we have been having in California we thought we would knock out the insulation in a couple of evenings. Once we got started we realized that the moisture created in the trailer, caused by the cool outside air and the warmer inside air, was not good to be insulating over the top of. Finishing this job will have to wait until the weather cooperates. We had started to install the insulation by cutting the panels the width we needed to fit them between the wall studs. We would measure the cut and then slice the Styrofoam with a razor knife and then snap the foam back and cut the back side along the crease with the knife. It worked but it was messy and pieces seemed to usually end up a little too big and would have to be trimmed. With work stopped because of weather we moved on to other projects. A friend stopped by to check our progress and recommended cutting the insulation with a saw. Simple solution to making straighter more accurate cuts with less mess. He recommended the Stanley Sharptooth Smooth Cut saw which we found at the home improvement store
32
By Paul Lacitinola for about $13.00. It is a 10 in. FineFinish Mini Utility Saw that will cut a fine edge in wood, laminates, plastics and Styrofoam insulation. (For the curved corners, we used the saw to score the back of the material so it would follow the curve of the aluminum.) The other project we were able to get done was installing a missing window which we found a replacement for at www. vintagecampers. com. We also ordered some rubber gasket material for a front window and the Straight Tip Filler Strip Insert Tool (about $32.00) to install it. When I looked at the tool and the lock strip part of the gasket, it seemed obvious how it might work. It proved to be a little more difficult to do. I see now they recommend using silicone as a lubricant, and that would help. I used some soapy water and that worked OK too. The easiest place to start installing the lock strip was at the joint where the two ends of the gasket meet. With the strip inserted through the top of the tip of the tool you “swim” the tool through the channel in the gasket. Wiggle the tool side to side and push (slowly but firmly) through the channel. Everything is tight. Go slow, keep it lubricated and don’t rush. If you hurry
www.vintagecampertrailers.com
the tool may pop out the channel and it is difficult to get started again. (Yes, it happened to me.) I “wiggled the tool back in to the channel using the same motion and then had to go back and fix the inch or so that had not gone in with the tool. Once I got the hang of it, the tool worked great. Where the two ends
of the lock strip met I cut it 1/4” long and forced it together tight. (If you don’t, rubber can shrink and cause a gap. I’m not sure how you could install this strip without this clever tool.

Ultimate Formica Counter-Top
GUIDE
At “Heffron’s A Moment In Time Retro Design” we get a lot of Do-It-Yourselfers that purchase laminate and metal banding from us and create their own counter-top masterpiece. But the truth is, you don’t need to be an expert craftsman to build a Formica counter-top. With a little bit of patience and guidance we are confident that anyone can complete this project. Below we will walk you through the process from installing your laminate, to finishing our counter-top off with the metal of your choice. But first, let’s list a few of the things that you’ll need: 1. Sheet(s) of your favorite laminate 2. Desired Metal Banding 3. Tape Measure 4. Power or Table Saw 5. Tape (when cutting laminate) 6. Contact Cement 7. Paint Roller or Brush 8. Wooden dowels 9. Router with Bevel trim bit 10. Sanding File To begin our project you will want to measure your counter-top. We recommend measuring 1-2 inches larger than the actual size to be on the safe side. Using a table saw or
hand-held power saw you will then want to cut the laminate. To avoid chipping you can tape your laminate along the line cut prior to cutting. Once you have your laminate cut its time to apply it to your counter-top. Most people recommend using contact cement for this step and it’s important to work in a well ventilated area. Take off the lid and make sure to stir before using. Flip the laminate over and apply the contact cement. Grab your paint roller and begin distributing the cement across the surface. Once you are done with the laminate, repeat the process this time with your counter-top. After you’ve applied the cement to both the laminate and counter-top you are going to let it dry. The reason for this is because the cement bonds to itself, rather than carpenters glue where you’re gluing two materials together. Once the cement is dry you can place dowels over the counter-top. Dowels allow you to easily adjust your laminate over your counter-top because they roll. Once aligned begin removing the dowels starting with the center piece. Work your way outwards on each end and press down firmly onto your laminate. Apply even pressure as you work your hand out towards the edge.

Generally the counter-top thickness will dictate the size of banding you are able to select. Take into consideration the laminate thickness added to the wood to select your banding. Remember that this project isn’t a race. Take your time and make sure that your laminate is being placed properly and is lining up the way you want it to look. Now that the laminate is firmly placed onto the counter-top we will want to remove the extra hanging off the edge. You can use a router to do this and we suggest using a “Bevel Trim Bit” to trim your laminate edge. Once trimmed you may need to use a file to smooth the edge of your counter-top until you get the desired touch you’re looking for. If you’ve gotten this far congratulations! You are more than half way finished with your project. When purchasing metal banding make sure you have the correct size needed for your counter-top. Generally the counter-top thickness will dictate the size of banding you are able to select. Take into consideration the laminate thickness added to the wood when determining your banding. If you choose a metal banding with a friction fit T-lip on the back for a friction fitted installation, you will need to cut a corresponding groove in the wood for the friction T-lip to fit into. For this you’ll need a 2 or 3 wing .080 cutter bit, with a ¼”shank. The lip depth on the back of the banding can vary.
Using a banding profile with the friction fit T-lip, you’ll also need to notch the back to accommodate any radius down to 3”. This can be done with a wheel type hand grinder or jigsaw with a fine metal blade. For banding that has no friction fit T-lip to mount with, some require screws, nails or adhesive. Our customers have let us know they have used adhesive such as Liquid Nails or PL400 and like the results. This is really a very easy installation and you shouldn’t shy away from doing the project. If you’re capable of running a power saw, router and hand tools – you’re ready to get started. So good luck with your project and remember, for all of your laminate and metal needs head over to www.Heffrons.com. We look forward to hearing from you!
If you’re not using a router and are straight cutting the groove, then you can use a chalk line to assist you with keeping your cut straight. A guide is always recommended however, to ensure as straight of a line as possible.
