In February, we caught up with friends in Palm Spring at Modernism Week. The following weekend, March 2-5 we hosted Boot Camp in Lodi, CA. In April we will be in Corning at the Woodson Bridge and the following weekend is Trailerfiesta in Petaluma, CA. So begins our rally season on the West Coast. While we try to get to new rallies every year, it is hard to “skip” rallies that we have gone to for years.

Most of our trailerite friends, like us, attend several rallies, so we camp with some friends several times a season. However some we only get to see at one particular event and that makes it hard to miss.

The first weekend in June we host Rally at the Ranch in Elverta, CA. Last year it was unseasonably warm but typically it is in the low 80’s with cooler breezy evenings. While most rallies sell out, rallies like Rally at the Ranch and the All American Rally in Brooks, Oregon (4th of July) have room for everybody! Held at unconventional large “park like settings”, these rallies have limited hook-ups but make up for fun if you are willing to “rough it“ for the weekend. Through the summer, it warms up in northern California so the rally season slows down a bit. We usually hit some car shows or head for the coast with a few friends. This year Hot August Nights in Reno, Nevada has even started their own Vintage Trailer Revival.

Rallies are a fundamental part of the hobby. Where else can you see so many magnificent mid-century preservations and restorations. At rallies, you can make contacts for parts, get restoration ideas or maybe even acquire your next project.

After a decade of vintage rallying myself, I can say that I always learn something or see an idea I can use in the future.

There is always something new to see whether someone has recently completed a new build or found a well preserved trailer that had been hidden in a barn for decades. Even if you don’t have a trailer yet you still need to tour an open house and see the individualism that each owner has poured in to their own trailer.

The second rally we ever went to, several years ago now, was the Pismo Rally. With about 300 trailers and who knows how many classic cars, bikes and motorcycles, I was pumped on adrenaline for three days! I tell people that jumping out of an airplane and being in a police pursuit gave me a similar rush.

(I used to be a cop so I was doing the pursuing.) After all these years, and the thousands of trailers we have seen and the friends we have made, we still look forward to the start of rally season. Check back with me after Trailerfest at the beginning of October, we’ll probably be ready to put the old trailers away for the winter. Except for maybe a New Years rally this year? DOUBLE ENDER Although Spartan produced “double enders” in the early 1950’s this creation was custom built by William Ward.

Vintage Trailer Coach Restorations (owned by William and Kelli Ward), found this Spartan Manor in a suburb of Portland, Oregon about five years ago. It was in rough condition and sat in their yard while they pursued the restoration of several other trailers. In the summer of 2015, after the Wards found a second “parts donor” Spartan, work began on this one of a kind, custom build. Although “double enders” were produced in the early 1950’s by Spartan, this creation was custom built

by William.

Kelli did not think converting the 24’ tandem manor into a double ender was one of William’s best ideas. Not daunted, William took several measurements and found the trailer’s mid-section was the same length from the middle towards

each end. Only the “end-caps” were different. (Spartan folklore or fact has it that the original double-enders were made when the factory ran out of rear ends.) Once William removed the rear cap of the one trailer he carefully removed the front end of the donor trailer. The cap was so light weight (about 100 pounds) he could lift it by himself. Each rivet was drilled out of the donor piece and when it was mated on to the back of the other trailer, all but three rivet holes lined back up!

This is the smallest of all the Spartan Manor models that were made. This Spartan is even more rare because it has a tandem axle. Spartan only did tandem axles on this model if it was custom ordered. Adding the “front to the back” lengthened the trailer about six inches. Once the overall shell

The 1959 Airstream Pacer, 1948 Spartan Manor and a 1962 Shasta Airflyte were all crowd pleasers. Completely restored, these trailers have a distinguished mix of modern amenities and vintage style.

Owner and designer, Randy Gomez, has been working in the Hollywood film/television industry for decades. He is a camera man, but also owns an equipment rental business, Camera Support Burbank, that services the film industry. Randy explained that at the end of each day, the film that is shot that

day (dailies), is reviewed on location so the production team knows what needs to be accomplished the following day.

Randy said it was a hot and dusty day and the team was looking through “dailies” when he had the epiphany that it would be really nice to do that task in some sort of comfort rather than under a pop-up tent. That was when he converged his background with film with his artistic vision and love for vintage and rebuilt a 1965 Airstream Safari into a television production trailer.

The ’65 Airstream was the beginning of a new business for Randy and Anna Gomez. They now have a boutique shop that employees two full time craftsmen who restore vintage trailers. Randy, with his background in art and design, has continued on page 16

The signature style of Hollywood trailers can be admired in these two similar but different interiors. The one on the left facing page is the Airstream and the photo below is the Spartan Manor featured on the next couple of pages. (Note the large windows in the Spartan.)

Both interiors boast shiny finishes over amber colored wood. Most metal finishes are highly polished aluminum or chrome. Other surfaces have been powder-coated or re-porcelained. Note the trimmed out area below the window in each photo. A flat screen TV rises with the flick of a switch for easy viewing. Rising in front of the window also helps create some privacy.

Built like they did back in the 50s and 60s but with new, safer materials Jayne Barocela, the owner of Relic Trailers, was a long time vintage trailer enthusiast before she started her business venture. A vintage camper trailers Facebook group was where she first saw the prototype of what is now the iconic Relic Trailer.

Relic Trailers are a blast from the past, built on designs created in the 1960’s, but manufactured brand new today.

Between 1960 and 1963 a high school welding teacher named Roy designed a mid-century inspired trailer. He began manufacturing them but he abandoned the project and put it into storage for more than fifty years. The warehouse where it had all been stored for decades was eventually sold and the new building’s owner found the amazing prototype time capsules.

One night someone posted the story on Facebook, with a link to a Craigslist listing. All of the machinery, designs, and a few shells were untouched, and forgotten, until Jayne saw them. She could barely sleep the night after seeing the ad, and called the owner the next day. He had already spoken with several interested parties. She ultimately called the owner back, and convinced him that she had the passion and the love for vintage trailers and would give these amazing relics the future they deserved.

The factory and the trailers were better known as Southland Trailers. photos and story by Bob Rigg These pictures were taken in the summer of 1952 with my first “Good” camera. Up to that point every photo I took was with some kind of fixed focus box camera.

The Argus C 3 (AKA the Brick) was a step-up from the box cameras, and presented quite a learning curve for me at the time.

The company was Mathison Aircraft & Trailer Co. located at 2923 South St., No. Long Beach,CA. The owners name was Earl “Matt” Mathison and his wife went by Maudie. They lived upstairs over the factory on South St. The factory and the trailers were better known as Southland Trailers.

They had 2 models the Runabouts and the Pacemakers. The Runabouts were from 13 to 18 feet long and were targeted to sell for approx. $100.00 per foot. The Pacemakers were from 27 to 29 feet and sold for much more than the $100.00 per foot. The owner, Matt, had bad luck getting paid from trailer lots and dealers so he went to selling “Factory

The trailers were very strong and sturdy for their time. The outer bow of the sidewall was made up of 1/4” x 2” x 3’ or 4’ strips of plywood glued and nailed together to form one solid piece from the floor in the front to the floor in the rear of the trailer. They were not the lightest rigs on the road but they were one of the strongest. The aluminum siding came in 4’ x 8’ sheets and all forming was done on the floor break after they had been cut to size on the shear. No pre formed or pre painted stuff here as it had not been invented yet.

The Runabout in this picture belonged to my dad. He had talked the owner into pulling our trailer up to the mountains for the summer so he could test out the new propane conversion unit on the truck. As I remember they were not too happy with the conversion.

There was only room to show about 3 or 4 trailers at a time on this narrow strip. He believed print advertising was a waste of money and word of mouth was the way to go.

My dad, H. B. “Buzz” Rigg, worked full time for the post office and part time in the evenings running all the 12v and 110v wiring in the trailers. He helped get me a job sweeping floors and helping out for the summer of 1952. I was called on to help do many things from laying flooring, hanging cabinets, and sanding the interior of the units in preparation for sanding sealer and

The worst job was getting down in the pit and spraying undercoating on the bottom of the trailers. Our state-ofthe-art respirator to be used for spraying undercoating consisted of an adjustable wire frame with an elastic band to fit around your head and used a Kotex

pad as a filter to breathe through. One time the guys hid the box of Kotex from me and made me go ask the owner’s wife for a new box. This was a very embarrassing thing for a 16 year old kid to go through and they kidded me about that for the rest of the summer. One

thing I will say about working there, I learned as much about life that summer as I did about building trailers. OSHA did not come along until 1971. As you can see from looking at the pictures, there were many of what today would be called workplace violations. www.vintagecampertrailers.com 23

1953 Southland

Ed saw that we were doing a feature on Southland trailers and sent us some before and after pictures of his 1953 Southland.

Ed was searching for an old camper to restore in 2012 when a coworker told him about a trailer that her boyfriend was selling.

Ed bought it from original owner who was then in his 60s and camped in it as a child growing up in California. It had been in his family since they bought it new in 1953. He lived in it in college and decades later pulled it to Florida.

Melrose, FL is where Ed met up with the original owner. In anticipation of a 170 mile ride home, it was then that he learned that the trailer had no working lights and the frame was so degraded that the side skins flapped in the breeze like elephant ears. To make it even more challenging it began pouring rain. No lights, no license tag, a white-out rainstorm, front side skins flapping. It was amazing that he got it home in mostly one piece. (Ed did lose a couple of trim pieces.)

The restoration took a year.

Ed worked from the floor up.

He preserved the original look but included a retro fridge and matching microwave, flat screen TV, dvd player, LED lighting inside and out and an AC / DC power.

Ed will likely sell the Southland now that he is restoring his dream trailer: a Spartan Manor 25’, that is in deplorable condition.

B O OT C A M P March 2017 - Lodi, CA The second annual gathering of trailer restorers got together this year to share their knowledge about a variety of different aspects of vintage trailer restoration. Several seminars addressed 12v, 110v and solar electrical systems. I think I learned just enough to make me dangerous.

Boot Camp 2017 in Lodi, CA hosted over 180 trailerites eager to learn about a variety of different aspects of vintage trailer restoration. Nearly two dozen presenters gave over 40 1.5 hour presentations on everything from electrical trouble shooting to painting to interior wood work. Classes were presented in the park’s pavilion and in a 40’ x 40’ tent. Beginning Thursday afternoon through Sunday morning Boot Camp offered a seminar in both venues at the same time. Something for everybody!

Boot Camp attracted a dozen attendees from out of state. Folks flew in from as far away as Wisconsin and Canada. The park offered cottages for those that did not camp at the park and some people opted to stay in nearby hotels. Thursday night we kicked off the weekend event with Hawaiian Barbeque! Breakfast and lunch were provided for the attendees. Some new fun menu offering were grilled cheese and tomato soup for lunch and an oatmeal bar Sunday morning.

The large open air classrooms gave presenters the opportunity to go to work.

Jimmy Evans prepped and painted trailer panels and Scotty from Artistic Airstreams brought an Airstream to show the variety of stages of polishing.

Scotty was also able to not just talk about it, but show you how he and his team polish trailers. Other presenters like Gary Warner and Adam Blair (Avalon RV), have built elaborate displays and bring tools for the “students” to use. Their classes give the attendees

the chance to see how electrical and solar work. Tim and Linda Brown and Joel and Rachell Harps (Harps RV) brought a variety of props, tools and products that illustrated everything needed for wood finishing and repair to trailer maintenance. All the classes were more than just lectures. The extra efforts made by the presenters took the event to another level.

Along with all of the learning that went on there was also a lot of socializing.

Friday night we were entertained by the Gypsy Time Travelers blacksmithing and story-telling (See issue # 27 of the VCT Magazine). Saturday, Vanessa gave Swing Dance lessons.

When we got home from Boot Camp it was time to get back to work on our 1955 Spartan. John Green got the wood paneling installed over the aluminum frame work and it was time to connect all of the wiring.

I rewired the trailer with 110v outlets and 12v lighting. Now I needed a power supply to make it all work. I contacted Mike Tomarchio the National Account Manager at Parallax Group, Inc. Mike helped me select their 8300 model for my project. Mike also sent me even more information about their power supplies that I thought would be good information to share with the VCT magazine readers. I read over and over again the misconceptions that exist out there regarding the converter systems in RV’s and Travel Trailers. Most people are under the assumption that their converter is a battery charger or somehow has a separate battery charging function. RV’s and Travel Trailers have a 12 volt DC system that requires 12VDC be supplied to it to operate those appliances and systems. This is what the converter is for. The converter is designed to supply a range of voltage safe enough to operate the 12 volt system and also adequate enough to charge battery if one is utilized in the RV or trailer.

Most commonly you have a 55 amp converter, which creates 55 amps of available current (Amps) in a voltage range of 13.2 to 14.5 VDC. There is also most likely a battery tied in parallel with the 12 volt system, meaning whatever the converter produces, the 12 volt systems and battery see simultaneously.

A converter is not a battery charger. It just so happens that whatever is not being consumed by the 12 volt systems, out of the 55 amps it creates, is available for a battery to take in the event it needs current to charge.

Now, without getting overly technical, because it can get very technical, a battery will always accept some amount current to offset natural internal discharge or any sort of parasitic drain.

Even though your converter creates 55 amps, your battery isn’t accepting all of that. As a battery charges, it develops resistance to current, the higher the charge level of the battery, the higher the internal resistance. This internal resistance pushes back or blocks the flow of current going into the battery until it reaches that point of equilibrium where it is only allows in mere milliamps of current to offset that internal discharge/parasitic

drain. For this example I use the typical car battery and alternator.

The average alternator in a car creates anywhere from 90 to 130 amps. From what I hear and see from RV and trailer owners regarding the converter system, you would also assume that they would think the battery in their car would over charge from the massive amounts of current being supplied from their alternator. But again, no matter the amount of current being created, the battery regulates the flow of incoming current.

Now let’s talk about voltage, this is where “3 stage” or “multiple stage” charging comes into play. Bulk, Absorption, and Float are your typical charge stages. The output voltage per stage is where I think most people get confused. A converter creates a range of voltage between 13v and 14-14.5 volts that is capped. Converter manufacturers set the parameters at a no load scenario and a full load scenario. Meaning that with nothing that requires 12 volts operating in the system, the converter will output no more that 14-14.5 volts, but with a full load (everything that requires 12 volts) operating, it will output no less than 13-13.2 volts. This range is established to safely operate the 12v system. When batteries became more and more common in RV’s and travel trailers, the need to safely charge them came into play. Battery chargers have been around forever and they are designed to do one thing; charge a battery. They are not and were never intended to operate a 12v system.

In a “3 stage” charger or converter, as some converter manufacturer now claim multi stage “charging” in a converter, the output voltages during these stages are designed for proper charging of a battery. The charger phases into and out of bulk, absorption, and float based upon detected amp draw from the converter. Typically at 4 amps or less a 3 stage charger would enter float mode.

This is all fine and dandy for a battery, as a battery is the only thing hooked up to a battery charger, in an RV you have multiple systems drawing current from the converter. What happens when total system load is greater than 4 amps? The converter simply never enters float mode. How can you claim you have 3 stage battery charging, when the device you manufacturer is being used in an electrical environment that is not designed for what 3 stage charging of battery is supposed to be able to accomplish? Now do not get me wrong 3 stage and multiple stage charging is a great function; for battery charging.

Keep in mind that you are not charging a battery in an RV, you have to operate the entire 12 volt system. At any given time, the system loads that may be on in an RV may not allow a typical multi stage charger to properly enter or exit any one of the stage. The voltages being supplied during the “stages” of battery charging may not be ideal for operating the entire 12 volt system.

With that in mind, battery charger manufactures can manipulate the output voltage to the battery into distinct stages. Bulk stage is where massive amount of amps is flowing into the battery, the low resistance of the battery allows this. The high rate of amps allows for a higher voltage to the battery. During the Absorption stage, the batteries internal resistance is starting to increase and the amount of current flowing into the battery begins to taper off and thus the voltage being supplied to the battery begins to taper off. The final stage or Float stage, is where the battery is only accepting in a very small amount amps. Typically it is only accepting in the milliamp range at the point to offset internal discharge and parasitic drain.

At this point the voltage being supplied is only adequate enough to maintain the charge level of the battery.

What may be great for charging a battery may not be so great for operating a 12 volt system. When it comes to a converter, the set voltage range of 13-14.5 volts DC fluctuates depending upon total system load, It will be higher with less total system load and lower with more total system load. A converter being a converter, and not a battery charger does not “see” that there is a battery hooked up to it. All it “sees” is another load, or something that is requiring current (Amps) and voltage. A converter cannot distinguish between a battery and an LED light, they are viewed only has loads on the system.

I mentioned earlier that the battery is in series with the entire 12 volt system. Converters do not charge the battery independent of supplying voltage and current to the entire 12 volt system. There is no isolated function or feature that exists

Due to the rough condition of the trailer when William and Kelli acquired it, there was not much left inside that could be salvaged. Using their creativity, the Wards redesigned their Spartan by adding a luxurious bathroom with an aluminum surround and a stainless sink. Although the trailer is not a “period correct” restoration, William worked hard to keep the mid-century feel with an aluminum ceiling, a large “U” shaped kitchen, walnut cabinets and white flooring.

Modern amenities include a, sound system with speakers throughout the coach, two Samsung flat screen TV’s and air conditioning. The exterior is polished in the mid-

dle and painted with Mercedes Benz metallic silver on the upper and lower sections of the trailer. Both porch lights are original to the trailer(s). It has new window glass, screens, aluminum propane tanks, new axles, brakes, wheels and tires etc. making this NEW/OLD trailer ready for years of vintage trailering fun. At only 4000 lbs. you can tow it with a ½ ton truck.

The Wards finished the Spartan in May of 2016 and have enjoyed showing it with their son Will at numerous vintage trailer rallies on the west coast. It has won best of show in several rallies. Greetings from Terry and Holly Jones, For the past four years, my husband and I have been proud owners of a 1962 Shasta Airflyte, and after attending our third Vintage Rally this past weekend, we believe we can now officially call ourselves Trailerites. Our little Shasta has been with us since the beginning, well, the beginning for my husband and I. After my parents purchased an Airstream in October of 2012, we became fascinated with vintage trailers, specifically “the ones with wings”. After searching for several months, my father found our little Shasta about six hours away in a small, rural town in Illinois in March of 2013. Two whirlwind trips later, we brought our then camouflaged, wingless Shasta home. Even though she was a sight for sore eyes, to say the least, we had the vision and were prepared to dig in and restore her to her formal glory. At the time we bought her, we believed that all of her decals, along with her wings, had been lost at some point throughout the years. Much to our surprise, her decals had actually been stored away in the drawer under the refrigerator many years ago and were still fully intact! Furthermore, on our wedding day, May 18, 2013, my parents surprised us with one final wedding present, two new wings for our little Shasta!

Fast forward one year, a dozen gallon buckets of paint removal, countless brushes/scrapers, three buffing wheels, and over a thousand screws, she was finally campground ready. After traveling to the Smoky Mountains, Bay Springs Lake in Mississippi, and Dale Hallow Lake in Tennessee, we found out about Vintage Trailer Rallies, with our very first 32

rally being in March 2016 at Honeycomb Campground in Grant, Alabama. After that, we were hooked! Not only did we get to meet fellow Trailerites who shared our passion for vintage trailers, we were able to see campers we had only read about or seen online!

Our next rally was at Fall Creek Falls with Southern Vintage Trailers Friends, and we had a wonderful time helping with a campground wide Trickor-Treat. Even though we may be some of the youngest Trailerites in the campground, we are welcomed with open arms at each and every rally and treated like old The day we brought friends. our Shasta home

What makes vintage cars so great? Is it simple nostalgia or is there more to it? Many people argue that cars built in the fifties were of a higher quality and built better. Others say these cars are simply beautiful and have more character than the cars you might find today. Collectors like the rarity, especially in models where few were built. Whatever the reason, most people can appreciate vintage automobiles and everything that comes with it.

That is why A Moment in Time Retro Design decided to begin offering something special for car enthusiasts (more on that later).

But first let’s dig into some of the most classic models from the fifties and what makes them great.

Even if you don’t pull with a classic, you can certainly appreciate how this company is re-purposing mid-century metal.

1955 Chevy The ‘55 Chevy was considered a huge turning point for the company and a major success. This was in part due to the V8 engine which helped create a combination of style and performance that until now could only be found in higher priced Oldsmobile’s and Cadillac’s. The 1955 Chevrolet also offered many first for the company such as air conditioning, power windows and even power seats. Something many of us take for granted today. The 55’s top trim offering was the Bel-Air which looks great and really makes the car stand out. The ‘55 was designed so well that its platform remained for 3 model years and is now referred to as the “Tri-Five Chevys” (‘55, ‘56, and ‘57) . Every other car soon followed suit, thanks to Chevrolet.

Styling wise the Chevy was called the baby Cadillac and the public loved it. Performance wise this Chevy lived up to the hype and that really showed in competition. The 1957 Chevrolet won 26 NASCAR convertible races and won all three driver’s championships. Because of its dominance NASCAR placed a ban on fuel-injected cars which would last until 2012. In the end, Chevy had huge success with this model and the TriFive Chevy’s.

1965 Ford Mustang The 1965 Ford Mustang isn’t like most collectible cars which were built in small numbers to make it exclusive. Instead the ‘65 Mustang set an all-time record for first year sales of any new model. Since its arrival people just had to own one and that includes some pretty big names such as President Bill Clinton, Yankee star Reggie Jackson, and in the James Bond movie Goldfinger (Techni-

cally a 1964 1/2 model). Yes the Ford Mustang was everywhere. One of the things that made the Mustang great was its ability to be whatever you wanted. Options included power steering, air conditioning, AM radio, deluxe steering, and more. Dealers loved the 1965 Mustang because most were at or above full retail price. As you can see, this was the type of car that auto executives and dealers dreamed and has been described as the right car at the right time.
