What our customers have to say about us

We picked up a 62 Shasta trailer and the side looked like a kid took a stick to the side of it. It was bad. We brought the skin to Hemet Valley RV and they Made a new piece. The Bottom skin is new and the top skin was old, but they look identical. It had 6 inch lines and it turned out perfect. Thanks Guys. Great job. -Barry

Five Star Plus!!! Steve and his company demonstrate what customer service should look like. Thanks so much! -Glenn I recently purchased all of the siding, trim and entry door for an 1970 11’ foot trailer that I rebuilt using only the metal frame of the original trailer. I contacted Steve at Hemet Valley RV and sent him a side view of the trailer with the dimensions on it. Steve figured out what material I needed and the amount and sent it. Everything that I needed I received in a timely fashion and it was packaged in very strong boxes...Thanks so much for the great job Steve, I have no doubt that your business will have continued success, Great Job. -Wayne M.

I think I have always been an old soul. My mother was a saver, some may say hoarder, of trinkets and things that reminded her of the past. I have her antique china hutch that always held a prominent place in our house when I was a child. I can remember that it was filled with everything from her Franciscan dish-ware, that was a wedding gift, to some ratty looking dolls that held memories for her because they were her aunts. With her passing, I now have the dishes, decades of family photos and 8mm films and what I can recall of the stories that were relayed to me from relatives that are no longer around to tell their tales. My grandfather was a mechanic and had a service station, garage and junk yard in the 1950s-60s. (That’s a picture of the service station in the “We Buy” ad below left.) My brothers and cousins grew up playing in Nan and Pop’s garage and junkyard and around all the old cars and parts. As I got older, my passion for old cars never wavered. When we stumbled in to the vintage trailer hobby it seemed like more of a natural extension of our love of “vintage” as opposed to us starting a new hobby. The vintage lifestyle that most of us embrace includes most anything midcentury Americana. My interests include everything from the cars and the trailers to bicycles, Classic Honda Trail Bike motorcycles, vans and motor homes. I expect that most people that read this magazine are not much different than us. My experience with the hundreds (or thousands) of people that we have met in the hobby is that we are all like-minded in our desire to preserve the past. In this issue of the magazine we have featured just a few of the cool camper vans we have come across in our travels. Not only are they fantastic examples International Truck Camper of how people were camping in the past, but they also make great tow rigs for vintage trailers! What’s next? Maybe a feature on vintage motor homes or maybe house cars? Send us your pictures and stories. We’d love to see em!

FROM GRUNGY We met Patricia Helfend from Santa Clarita, CA at the Pismo South Rally in March of 2017. Her pink and polished aluminum Shasta trailer was on her maiden voyage. Patricia was able to buy the trailer from her friend’s grandmother. Originally, the trailer was the classic white and blue. Then, it was painted red and white to match a tow vehicle.

Lak the 4000 mile trip Katy towed her Lakewood trailer through wind, rain, lightening, hail, snow and sun while exploring the beautiful Western United States. Katy Reischling, from Edmonds, WA, hit the road with her dog Ana and her 1954 Lakewood trailer. She was on the road for two weeks traveling through Oregon, Utah and Arizona. Katy towed her Lakewood trailer through wind, rain, lightening, hail, snow and sun while exploring the beautiful Western United States. She even got to experience a double rainbow after a storm blew over just north of Moab, Utah. Driving through the wind was the most difficult for Katy.

Camping Fun in “Ben’s Bus:” a 1962 Chevrolet Corvair Greenbrier Camper Van By Benjamin A. Stiles, Ed.D. I was taken on my first camping trip at six days old. While people find that hard to believe, it must be said that Mom really liked camping and was not going to let the arrival of a newborn baby keep her home if she could help it. That family camping trip took place in the hot beginning of August, 1975, in a 1969 Chevy camper van towing a 1966 Airstream travel trailer. How I wish my parents had held on to that spectacular rig! I’ve been camping ever since. 16

www.vintagecampertrailers.com

A little history. Camping is in my blood. My parents met, courted, married, and then camped the Skyline Drive out of the trunk of an early ‘60s MG Midget sports car to celebrate their honeymoon. A succession of three early model Chevy van campers and two Coleman popups followed as their family grew and their camping equipment got more sophisticated. Over the years, my family traveled in three different Airstream trailers and

in all we visited 34 states before I graduated high school. Not a bad ride. 1962 Chevrolet Corvair Greenbrier Sportswagon Camper Van So it made sense I would get into campers myself. When looking for a first car, I wanted something roomy to camp in that would also serve as my commuter vehicle to the semi-local university. I have a strong appreciation for all types of flat front, forward control

vans built during the 1960s. Although VW buses were an obvious choice, while leafing through a trucks/vansfor-sale magazine, I spotted an ad for a 1960s Chevrolet Corvair window van and peppered my Dad with questions. It turned out he had owned one when they were somewhat new and enjoyed the “Greyhound Bus” driving position. He and Mom had also enjoyed many camping adventures in their Corvair van. The Greenbrier I finally decided to purchase was a standard (non-deluxe) green and white 1962 model. The previous owner had found it as a backyard woodshed, rescued it, and restored it back in 1983. It was not fancy, had only two seats, ratty carpet, fair paint, and an odometer reading 480,000 miles. This was a truck I could both afford, and later modify to meet my needs. The van, over time, would evolve into a comfortable and capable camper.

a full complement of cooking and eating utensils. The Travel Equipment Corporation (Elkhart, IN) Travel Top is period correct for the vehicle and was installed for those times when standing in the bus is necessary. The TEC Travel Top, serial number 542, is of very early production and its restoration took nearly three years to complete. Installation on the Greenbrier took fourteen consecutive hours. It has become well known at local campgounds and Corvair shows. Motivation for the van comes by way of a rear mounted 110 horsepower Corvair “car” engine and a four-speed manual transmission. It has a 3:55 differential and is very happy to cruise the highways at 65-70 miles per hour. For many years Lynn and I used the Greenbrier as our long distance vacation vehicle. It has taken us from Pennsylvania to Maine, Kentucky, Ontario, New Jersey,

Ben and Lyn Stiles Strasburg, PA

My Greenbrier now has over 640,000 miles to its credit. After three complete interior redesigns and lots of tweaking, “Ben’s Bus” has come a long way. It features reupholstered Corvan (Corvair panel van) bucket seats up front, a home built camping interior including a convertible sofa, bed, table, cabinets for food and clothing, and

Michigan, Illinois, Missouri, Iowa, and several other places. While the Greenbrier is no longer our only camper, I am always happy to know it is ready to go for a great day-long road trip or weekend getaway with a turn of the key.

This 1963 VW Panel Van Sundial Camper Conversion came from a VW dealer in Southern California. It was restored in 2006 by me and my sons in my shop. Attention was paid to preserving the original style and set up with maple paneling and bamboo trim. The pop up camp tent is a German made set up by Touri Camp by Eckel in Munchen, Germany. I’m the only one that I know of that has one and more importantly in great original condition. A lot of research has gone into researching this piece. The round red camping table was found at the VW museum in Stuttgart, Germany. It’s a VW spare tire table that stores in the spare tire well. (See previous page.) My young sons and I have camped in this set up since 2007 with their first trip to Alaska from Tucson AZ. We have camped in 18 states including traveling to the Florida Keys, and Canada, British Columbia, and the Alberta Provincial Parks. Original vintage water travel stickers adorn the camper windows noting where we have traveled. It’s a unique and one of a kind camper. Tony Kadous Tucson, AZ

1967 Westfalia Camper Restoration By Joel Horne NapaValleyRestorations.com

A wonderful little van if you don’t mind taking your time to get to wherever you’re going. Westfalia conversions began as early as 1951 when an officer in the British forces that was stationed in Germany, requested a Volkswagen transit van be equipped as a home with space for living, sleeping and working. Westfalia, in Wiedenbrück, Germany created the “camping box” as ordered. It was such a success that it was put in to production and was the multifunctional dream car of the 1950’s. In 1962 Westfalia built its first motor home giving its name to the VW bus based Westfailia SO 34. These models were shipped to the USA and were a big hit with Ameri-

The folding roof and many other innovations would be added over the next several decades of production. ifornia before it was loaned to the owner’s daughter who lived in Arizona. It was damaged in a small fender bender and sat for 12 years before being poorly repaired and returned to “Dad”. 15 more years passed before it was sold to the 2nd owner who lived in Lodi, California. Over the past 27 years it had been poorly painted and repaired and needed someone that knew how to bring it back to life. Joel answered a Craigslist ad for a one owner 1967 VW bus and ultimately a deal was struck for the vehicle to change hands. 1960’s VW buses don’t come cheap and there were other buyers waiting in the event Joel backed out! The bus 24 www.vintagecampertrailers.com

was loaded on a trailer with a truckload of wood, interior parts, cabinets and 2 fridges (that were not correct for the camper) and it was taken to the shop in Napa Valley, California. It took a week of stripping the vehicle down to get it to its shell and on a full-size rotisserie. A media blaster was used to take down to bare metal for correct repairs. After all metal work repairs were done it still needed new floors, rockers, corners, front nose and side panels. After many hours, they finally had a nice body to massage and paint at Altissimo Paint and Restoration in Napa, California. It was body worked, blocked and primed two times and paint sealer was applied before laying

down the Original L-87 Pearl Weiss paint code that it came with originally. A new rebuilt front beam was installed with all new brakes, bearings, kingpins, Tie rods, and an all new suspension in the rear as well. Rock Guard Revival A rock guard does more than protect against flying road debris.

By Scot Thompson Well, I should have known better! I anticipated finding an old rock guard and salvaging it and cutting it to size to fit the rear of our 1964 17 ft. Holiday Trav’ler would be about a 3-day project. Ummm…more like 3 weeks! A rock guard does more than protect against flying road debris. It functions as an awning so windows can be open on rainy days, it provides shade and privacy and most importantly for us, when closed it positively prevents any rain or road mist from getting on the rear jalousie windows. We were searching for one that had the unique “louvered” shape so it would match the front. I found another vintage Holiday Rambler owner who kept theirs stationary at a river lot. It was damaged, and they didn’t want it anymore. The fiberglass was quite degraded with little remaining resin and the glass fibers sticking out and there was a poorly made patch covering a hole. But it had the lifting struts and the top hinge…all the hardware was there! It was larger than our needs at 7’X2’ but I felt I could cut it to size. The inside of the panel where the sun couldn’t reach the fiberglass was in good shape. All the aluminum fames were sadly corroded and pitted. Man, it was ugly to look at but beautiful to me. A 50-year-old rock guard from the same manufacturer is nigh impossible to find! CLEANING We dragged it home and started the refurbishing process. Using dish soap and water and then paint thinner followed by more soap and water and it started to look creamy white again. I was hoping that I could cut away the patched 32

www.vintagecampertrailers.com

area by resizing it to our 75”X18.5” size, but that wasn’t to be and I’d have to make a new patch. After all the cleaning, I started to access the scope of the project. The corners of the frame were held in together differently than our front rock guard. There the corners simply had a sheet metal screw holding the mitered corner; on this rock guard, it was more sophisticated. Inside each corner was a small angle brace with indentations on its edges. When the factory assembled it, they inserted the angle braces into the aluminum frame and

then made two punch marks into those indentations. Nice and neat, but tricky to do. And the securing mechanism to hold the guard in the closed position was also more sophisticated. Rather than use a simply wing bolt screwed into the frame a neat little latch held it securely. And the bottom of the rock guard had a “sill” that prevented the rock guard from contacting the window when closed; our front rock guard just used those wing bolts to hold it away from the window. All these features were improvements that came with a Rambler model versus our cheaper Trav’ler model. But they complicated the re-sizing process as well as the fitting of the rock guard into the very limited area

around our rear window. I.e., every cut was critical and couldn’t be too long or too short. DISASSEMBLY I started by drilling out the corner punched indents and disassembling the frame. I really wanted to save those corner braces and I was able to do so. As with every refurbishment the general guideline is to do no further damage! Because I would be cutting the frame in both directions, I decided to cut all eight frame ends and re-miter the “new” corners. With the frame safely apart, I started on the fiberglass panel. First, I used an abrasive flapper wheel to clean and smooth that outer surface and to remove the old patch followed by hand sanding with a 200 grit and a sanding block. Boat quality

dan@vintagecampers.com

34

www.vintagecampertrailers.com

fiberglass resin is generally bluish in color and dries clear; auto quality is more yellow and that suited this project better. I used 3M’s Bondo resin available at a home improvement store. I applied new resin to both sides and would apply a 2nd coat to the outer surface once I cut the panel to its new size. That would seal the edges and given extra protection to the old sun damaged surface. A unique thing to note about these panels is they can be turned over; that will present an unused surface to the outside without much work to be done. I did not do that in this case. THE FRAME Setting the fiberglass aside, I cleaned and polished all the aluminum pieces. What a chore! And because much of the aluminum was quite pitted, I decided to finish it with a wire brushed texture. I used a steel wire wheel followed by a brass wire wheel to achieve a nice softly brushed texture that would hide the pitting. Before cutting the frame though, I needed to make that frame fit our window. Measure, re-measure, measure again…and then again! This was no time for an error.

And, there was only about ¼” of tolerance in the height from the bottom edge of our clearance lights at the top and the bottom of the flat siding where it turned out to form the trunk. First, I cut the width as it was less critical by using an abrasive metal blade on a miter saw. A better choice would be a diamond blade, but I didn’t want to buy one. After cutting I taped the frame together, temporarily mounted the top hinge and inserted the top frame with the two over-long side members holding the bottom frame in order to establish the cut line at the bottom of the side frames. I sweated that because it wouldn’t be until I had cut all the metal and assembled it before I knew if my measurements were correct. In the end, my frame fit into the space with 1/8” to spare! This tight tolerance was necessary because the latching mechanism needed to sit on the vertically flat section of the siding in order for it to capture the latching bolts. Even so, I had to radius the latches corners for it to work: the shorter vertical height of the rock guard meant its swing radius was tighter and the latch bolts struck the latch higher than the original geometry. A little grinding did the trick. REASSEMBLY With the frame now cut and polished and test fit using masking tape to hold the corners, I readied the fiberglass panels to be cut. There are lots of ways to cut fiberglass panels; none of them are very pleasant. Fortunately, these panels are very

www.vintagecampertrailers.com

35

thin and that meant a whole lot less glass fibers flying around. Still, I used a full mask and face shield and a sacrificial coat, mounted two large fans behind my table saw to blow the fibers away. I don’t wear gloves with the table saw, but you could use nitrile gloves if desired. I then made sure I could out-feed the panel without having to stop my cut by making a plywood table. I used a 60-tooth blade mounted teeth forward and hoped it wouldn’t dull too quickly. By cutting on the long dimension first, the panel would fit in my table saw’s “sled” to make the cross cut and to hold the panel firmly with a wooden brace. I cut the panel 1/8” shorter than the frame in all directions to allow for the frame thickness, but that wasn’t enough. I ended up cutting the cross cut 3 times and the length edges 4 times. Each cut was nerve wracking and had a risk of fracturing the panel. As luck would have it, it came out just fine. I assembled the frame with the cut panel and masking tape and hung it up again for a size check. Boy it looked like this was actually going to work! Next I had to assemble the whole thing. This is where I had to cut the panel so many times as I could not get the mitered frame corners to close without gaps unless the panel was just perfect. The method of joining the corners was to be the same as the factory and that meant once I punched the aluminum corners into the corner braces, I could not make any further adjustments. On my shop wood working bench I rigged a method of squaring the frame/panel and then I inserted the corner braces into the frame and used a dead hammer to tap it all together. By rigging a “vice” on the bench I could hold the corners together while I punched them. I had previously made a punch by grinding an existing punch into the tiny rectangular point that would replicate the factory’s punch marks. A few test punches on scrape pieces and I was good to go. I also inserted the latching “bolts” into the bottom sill/frame and secured them with a sharp punch. After cutting and adding the central panel braces, I was ready to make the final installation into the top hinge. 36

INSTALLATION But first, I had paint work to finish. When I removed the drip cap over the rear window, I was left with some old caulking ridges and rough surfaces on my newly painted trailer. I sanded, primed and painted these with a brush, then applied butyl tape to the flange of the hinge and permanently mounted it with sheet metal screws into new holes. With this done, the rock guard was mounted and I measured the telescoping struts to cut them to size for the shorter panel height. Again, this geometry was critical; I didn’t want to cut off any more the struts than necessary. The struts are held up by thumb screws that screw into clinch nuts – a special sheet metal nut also referred to as a swage nut. The original nuts had disappeared over the years, so I scrounged up two new ones from my box of parts and inserted them into the struts. I still need to get longer wing bolts to fit them but a simple screw will work in the interim. After 3 solid weeks of working on this project, I am very happy to say it was worth it! We now have a “factory” rock guard in front and in the rear. No more worrying about leaks at those windows!
