What our customers have to say about us

We picked up a 62 Shasta trailer and the side looked like a kid took a stick to the side of it. It was bad. We brought the skin to Hemet Valley RV and they Made a new piece. The Bottom skin is new and the top skin was old, but they look identical. It had 6 inch lines and it turned out perfect. Thanks Guys. Great job. -Barry

Five Star Plus!!! Steve and his company demonstrate what customer service should look like. Thanks so much! -Glenn I recently purchased all of the siding, trim and entry door for an 1970 11’ foot trailer that I rebuilt using only the metal frame of the original trailer. I contacted Steve at Hemet Valley RV and sent him a side view of the trailer with the dimensions on it. Steve figured out what material I needed and the amount and sent it. Everything that I needed I received in a timely fashion and it was packaged in very strong boxes...Thanks so much for the great job Steve, I have no doubt that your business will have continued success, Great Job. -Wayne M.

Extensive knowledge and quality materials. Very fair pricing and quick turn around time. Steve and Tammy are always helpful. -Larry

1950 WestCraft Coronado (4 window trolly top)

Along with the birch interior, flooring, appliances and fixtures in their recently acquired Coronado, Carl and Jaime Holm of Tinker Tin Trailer Co. are original finds in their own right.

This trailer was purchased brand new by a newly married couple in 1950. The husband was in the Navy and they lived in the trailer full time as he was mostly stationed in Southern California. After the couple passed away the trailer stayed in the family until 2016 when Tinker Tin acquired it. The current owners, Carl Holm (37) and Jaime Holm (29) of Tinker Tin Trailer Co., are trailer enthusiasts through and through! They are extremely passionate about vintage trailer history and continued on page 32

The last week of September was Trailerfest in Plymouth, California. A new location for us and for the event from our familiar Tower Park Camp Ground in Lodi, California. Last year, Yogi Bear Jellystone Parks purchased the campground at Tower Park from Kamprounds of America (KOA). Throughout 2017 the new owners have been busy with completing literally millions of dollars of improvements to the park that was due for an update. The work was well underway when we were at Tower Park for Boot Camp in March 2017. Trees were being trimmed and load after load of gravel was being loaded in. The park was full steam ahead to get ready for the upcoming summer camping season. This year Boot Camp will be held at the Casa De Fruta Campground in Hollister, California. (See pages 42 and 47 for more information.) Among many other amenities, this location affords us two large indoor classrooms for the seminars. Many of the sites at Tower Park have been upgraded with concrete, the pools have been resurfaced, their furniture updated and several large, beautiful cabins have been added along the back fence. They have relocated the recreation area and added basketball, volleyball and Ga-Ga* ball courts. One of the neatest things they have built is the new western town to play laser tag! This feature replaced an old storage yard that was just accumulating junk. The 49er campground in Plymouth, CA was the perfect host for this year’s Trailerfest while Tower Park was under construction. So perfect in fact, we wanted to come back in 2018. The dilemma being all our history at Tower Park. Trailerfest, or “the Lodi rally”, is where we started back in 2010. We solved the problem by doing the only thing we could think to do, TWO TRAILERFESTS! Spring in Lodi, and back to Plymouth in the FALL. (See the rally calendar begining on page 41 for details.) The 49er, Tower Park and Casa De Fruta are all ideally suited for the types of rallies we host. Developing the relationships with their management over the years makes it easier for them, and us ,to execute fun and trouble-free events. You can see photos of Trailerfest at www.trailerfestrally.com Send us some great photos of you and your trailer at rallies and let us know which rallies are your favorite and why. Our events all sell out so don’t wait until you are on the waiting list. Register today and we’ll see you in 2018! *(Hebrew: literally ‘touch-touch’) is a variant of dodge-ball that is played with one ball. The game combines dodging, striking, running, and jumping, with the object of being the last person standing. Players hit the ball at each other with their hands, and are eliminated if the ball strikes them on or below the knee. The game can be played by a group of individual players or with teams, as well as in one-on-one matches. Rules, ball types, pit surfaces, and pit sizes can vary.

Stepahnie hired all the carpentry work out. The carpenter is a cabinet maker who also restores historic homes. Another carpenter, who is a vintage camper owner as well, polished and resealed all the windows. A painter did all the exterior as well as the stove and refrigerator. Stephanie’s contribution was completely sanding the woodwork on the interior and re-staining. Custom curtains were made by a seamstress, and the upholstery done by a professional. The custom pink flooring was imported from Europe! Shore Hills Campground in Boothbay, Maine is her go to, as well as camping in New Hampshire and Massachusetts. Stephanie said, “I have camped out 14 times this season and have been to three rallies. Continued on page 10

One of the rallies I help host and organize each year is “The Vintage Camper Jamboree” held the first weekend in June at Shore Hills Campground in Boothbay, Maine. 1939 ALMA Lester and Arlene Parsons Vicksburg, MI

We purchased this 1939 Alma several years ago. We did all the work to bring this “Gem back to original. We are 14-year members of Tin Can Tourist. We attended the spring TCT Rally in Milford, Michigan with the Alma and received an award in the Concourse. We did some reading at the RV Museum in Elkhart, Indiana and we found that the body style of this camper was left-over from 1938 but titled as a 1939. The restoration included putting new leatherette on the outside.

MEET PENELOPE Her Door is Always Open In Minneapolis Minnesota by Sue and Basil Owen After camping for years in Volkswagen vans, we decided it was time to move up to a small trailer. Our original plan was to find a small fiberglass camper, with the ultimate goal of finding a vintage trailer in a few years when we retired. After searching for months with no luck, Basil came across a Craigslist ad for a 1959 Pathfinder that had been stripped to the frame and rebuilt. A quick exchange of emails led to an appointment to take a look.

amp hour deep cycle battery and a flexible panel solar panel provide power to the lights, as well as a 12 volt outlet and a pair of USB ports for powering electronic equipment. We also had the vintage trailer brakes upgraded to a modern system that still allows the use of the original axle and hubs.

We stepped inside and just knew we were home. The warm tones of the vintage birch paneling, coupled with available space and storage were exactly what we had envisioned our dream camper would have. It didn’t take us long to strike a deal and she was ours.

Marti’s Awnings created a beautiful red and white stripe awning that adds the perfect touch to the exterior. Penelope is the belle of every campground we visit and is open for tours. We were accustomed to drawing attention with our VW vans, but nothing compares to the interest in Penelope. She was also inadvertently the highlight of a vintage car cruise night in Wisconsin Dells as a shortcut to the campground turned interesting.

Dave and Cindy, the previous owners, had done most of the heavy lifting - taking it down to the frame, replacing rotted ribs and installing new flooring. They also added a vent system that allows for the use of a free-standing AC unit. We did some upgrades to the interior, adding a new mattress and bedding, curtains and new cushions for the front dinette. Lighting was upgraded to LED bulbs and under-cabinet puck lights. A 125

In the two years we’ve had her, she’s been to the Great Smoky Mountains, the Rocky Mountains and all over Wisconsin and Minnesota. She even visited her “hometown” of Spencer, Wisconsin where Basil and Sue were allowed to tour the former factory where she was born. We look forward to many years of enjoyment traveling with Penelope. Stop by and visit if you see us!

1962 AVION 20

www.vintagecampertrailers.com

We saw her sitting ALMOST unnoticeable behind a machine shed in what appeared to be an abandoned lot. Oh, what a shame we thought….she will rot away and eventually end up in a junkyard. How will we ever find the owner? We considered leaving a note knowing it may never be found. And then, a stranger drives in looking very suspiciously at us. Tom quickly explained we were only intrigued by her beauty and would they possibly know the owner? THEY DID. It was the man’s brother. What are the chances of that? We thought maybe it was destiny. We made arrangements to see it the next day. Surely the owner would want too much money for a gem like this? What a beauty she must have been in her time. Certainly she had been the talk of the neighborhood….in 1962 that is. www.vintagecampertrailers.com

21

“There she sat beckoning for us to claim her and make her beautiful once again. We had to at least look. She smelled of rodent droppings and moisture from a century. She was littered with garbage and debris barely enough room to walk through. BUT we could see her potential, her beauty within. She was PINK….pink stove, pink sink, pink tub, tomorrow, we will call her owner and make an offer…..” See the extensive before/after documentation of this restoration. TRANSFORMATION

AFTER

By Rebekah Farrand I was raised by parents who love antiques, so naturally, I developed an admiration for all things vintage. My dad particularly loves Volkswagen campers and he’s owned several over the years. While I love vintage VWs, my interest migrated more towards vintage camper trailers. Last year my parents graciously agreed to help me restore a vintage camper trailer while my husband was in school. I purchased a 1977 Serro Scotty Sportsman and we’ve been slowly making progress. My husband and I are excited to use this camper once it’s ready, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the restoration phase. My parents have seven kids and dedicate their lives to helping all of us however they can. I’ve cherished the time they’ve been able to dedicate to helping me with this because it wouldn’t be happening without their help. We’ve already created so many meaningful memories with this camper even though I’ve yet to take it camping.

‘58 ROMER CAMPER, ‘66 F250 This is the Best Shape Camper/Trailer I’ve Bought by Justin Zerwekh www.vintagecampertrailers.com

25

Got the truck a year ago as a shop truck and just got it finished mechanically. The camper we’ve only had a month, but I refinished it all. I’ve done 5 other vintage trailers including a ‘60 Terry, ‘65 Terry, ‘55 Hanson, ‘57 Santa Fe and a ‘58 Scotty. This one was in pretty original shape, but I had to go through all the wiring, pump, lines, hardware, seals etc. I painted and polished the outside and purchased new foam and fabric. Reinforced the bottom wood. Interesting story is that this is the best shape camper/trailer I’ve bought. All the others have been from fields sitting 30 years. I always get them able to trailer home that day from the field and then set a road trip 45 days later. I get them road worthy and take them on 3000-mile trips with a lot of tools and such to shake them down and fix things that break. We use them for 6 months or so as I cosmetically restore them and then sell them. I’ve never camped in a finished trailer despite restoring so many! I have an antiques restoration shop specializing in mid-century refrigerators, mixers, and furniture. Instagram @vintage55restorations I also have a ‘55 f100, ‘56 Lincoln and a ‘63 Falcon in addition to the ‘66 f250. I’ve never smogged a car in my life and the ‘66 is the newest car I’ve ever owned. I’m 30 and married to Chelsea (the photographer). 26

1 9 4 8 TA M We Plan to Travel America as the Tam was Intended, By Mike & Cheryl O’Connor Portland, Michigan

Glennis E Tam (1902-1974) was described by his nephew, R Stanley Tam, as a different type of fellow who did all of his work in his wood shop behind his home at 107 North Jackson Street, Wapakoneta, Ohio. Some of that work included house trailers and truck bodies. Glennis advertised his custom insulated house trailers in the Lima, Ohio newspapers (1938-1940): $265.00 could see you purchase a home on wheels to see America. And that’s just what Stanley did when he married in the 1940s. Ac-

28

www.vintagecampertrailers.com

cording to Stanley, there were many stops during their honeymoon for tire changing – due to the overloading of clothing by his new bride! Another couple looking for travel adventure, Lauren and Grace Hoffman, purchased a second- hand Tam on September 28, 1963 from Burr Debar, an oil and gas retailer from Elsie, Michigan for $300.00. The last year it was licensed was 1964, they then parked it up on land in Hesperia, Michigan and

www.vintagecampertrailers.com

29

eventually it was enclosed with a crude plywood structure, which is likely why it may be the lone surviving Tam with a well preserved interior. When Brandon Morrison was approached by Grace’s daughter in the fall of 2015, the craftsmanship of Glennis was still evident. The Redwood Gum plywood gave the cabinet doors a two tone effect and the Douglas Fir plywood walls were as rare as the Tam herself. Seeing past the condition of the back wall, which had been left to the elements, we purchased the Tam, which is 20 foot long with a single axel, from Brandon in the spring of 2016 – as he regretfully lacked the facility to restore her.

30

www.vintagecampertrailers.com

Our first step in the extensive restoration process was to remove the Celotex and insulation. Thankfully the termites favored the siding for meals and our work revealed a solid, well-built trailer! For additional strength, we replaced the perimeter of the original wood frame (below the exterior walls) with angle iron. A new axle has been fitted, upgrading the brakes to electric. The interior walls have been insulated (Prodex), sanded, and finished using the French Polish method (Pratt & Lambert #38 varnish). In the kitchen, the cabinets have been restored and reproduction red Marmoleum applied to the counter top. As we plan to travel America as the Tam was intended, some modern conveniences have been added: The Coleman Preway range is a facade that houses a

microwave; the nameplate and 1940s Signature door handle of the ice box adorn a small refrigerator. We were lucky to find original tiles from the era to replace the flooring. The Click Clack sofa has been restored and reupholstered with period correct fabric. Unfortunately the steel Marvel windows were beyond repair and have been replaced with 1950s aluminum ones, which are framed by curtains made from reproduction fabric. The original pocket screen door and lighting fixtures remain – where the latter benefits from new breakers and wiring. To prevent history from repeating itself, aluminum has been instated in lieu of the not so weather proof Celotex siding and canvas roof that Glennis chose. 60 years later, our 1947 Tam proudly brings his bespoke design back to the highways and byways of America.

A TOTAL LOSS Joe and Nancy Owens from Arizona sent us their story about what happened while they were restoring a trailer. This is Joe’s account, and a warning to fellow trailer restorers. The day after Thanksgiving Nancy finished staining the remaining wood on the front of our 64 Shasta 16SC. It was beautiful. The only thing left to do was the floor covering and counter tops. All new wiring, original stove, lamps, new tires and bearings, all resealed seams and windows, fresh turquoise/white acrylic enamel. It was almost completely done. We were planning on going into town to watch the Arizona Wildcats. It was an 8:30 p.m. game, so we decided to stay home. Around 7 pm, Nancy said, “I smell smoke.” She looked out the window and said “the trailer is on fire!” She called 911, took, Felix, our cat, over to the other house and moved the El Camino while I tried to douse the flames with a garden hose. The hose was useless. The Fire Department came quickly, and they foamed our little house, the shed and a 40 ft. eucalyptus tree while watering down our Shasta.

Before 36

www.vintagecampertrailers.com

In the end, the trailer was completely burned. It burned so hot that it warped the frame, melted some welds and vaporized the trailer’s brand new tires. The only trace of tires left were the steel belts. The Fire Department concluded it started by spontaneous combustion of the linseed oil based stain and the wet wood. Nancy followed all the instructions. There was no propane or electric hooked up. The weather was cool. Of course, after this total loss, many people came forward to tell us to never use linseed oil based stain inside. We had no direct insurance on the trailer, but AAA, our homeowner’s insurance came through and paid us over $4,400 for everything. The 40 foot tree had to come down. The trash had to be hauled away (which we did).

AFTER We feel very fortunate on two counts, (1) Had we been gone to a sports bar to see the University of Arizona game, we wouldn’t have been home. The tree would have burned and fallen on the house. Felix, our cat, was in the house. The tree would have burned the house down. (2) AAA was extremely responsive and handled the loss quickly and professionally. Note: AAA is not one of those horrendous insurance companies we hear about. They were great.

Interior Inspirations By: Heffron’s A Moment In Time Retro Design One of the most exciting and rewarding parts about working at Heffrons.com is receiving photos from our customers featuring their finished projects. It’s one thing to simply buy retro furniture. It’s another to turn your vision into a reality and to turn ordinary into extraordinary. For many of our customers this is their first time taking on a project of this magnitude. The journey can sometimes be difficult, and there are many lessons learned along the way. However, once the project is completed, the reward for your hard work is that much sweeter. We recently spoke to a few of our customers to highlight some of our favorite interior designs and their trailer projects. Whats Up With The Buells Our first interior comes from Katie and her husband Logan. They highlighted their two and half month journey of renovating a 1972 Starcraft Starcruiser motor home on their blog (Google Search: Whats Up With The Buells). With great memories of summer vacations in a motor home, Logan wanted to give his children the same experience. Katie had her vision of what the inside would look like and together they ended up gutting the whole interior, redoing the subfloor, and starting from scratch.

For the two of them, this project was a pretty big risk and they didn’t know much about motor homes at the time. “I primarily relied on YouTube and a few other StarCraft Starcruiser owners that I met along the way.” Logan said to us. The journey was well worth it and they learned a lot along the way including

subflooring, laying carpet, building a counter-top, electrical, plumbing and more. So what advice would Katie and Logan give to readers? “My advice would be to go for it. You only live once and it’s a great opportunity to learn and make something your own. We are very proud of how the motor home turned out and have received a lot of positive feedback from people that see the inside or us driving by! Be creative, research online, and have fun with it!” Pierre’s Trailer Project Pierre’s story started about two and half years ago when he and his wife rented a much smaller Airstream Bambi for a weekend. They fell in love with the idea of Glamping (glamorous camping) and the search was on to find their own Airstream trailer. Eventually he came across a 1971 Overlander International Airstream to remodel. Pierre is a professional builder and designer so coming up with a plan wasn’t too difficult for him. However, with the removal of the original cabinets, kitchen, bathroom, and floor the trailer was gutted and he realized it was a bigger project than expected. “So I contacted a shop who does nothing but Airstream restoration. Under my direction and supervision they started little by little to restore the beauty

of this American icon”. The process lasted almost ten months and every detail had been thought out. From the connections of the cabinets panels to the recess lighting, and even the acrylic shower to give the feeling of space. Everything in the trailer is also custom from the Italian granite on the kitchen counter top to the African zebra wood

in the bedroom. When asked if he had any advice, Pierre said: “Make sure when you start the project you do some research first and you cover all angles of the rebuild. Make sure you also have enough money in the budget”. Horse Trailer Interior Our final featured project is from Ricky and Shawna. You might not recognize it at first, (right) but this is actually the living area of their horse trailer that they take to rodeos. Together they were able to transform the living area from a very small drab area into a bright, fun place. “The incredibly small area did make some parts of it tedious (but) the easiest thing about this project was working with Retro Design, the dinner bench was well made and easy for us to customize with drawers underneath”. In addition to her Chevie Series Booth, Shawna also used a variety of tin signs and a vintage mural border around the ceiling to help make the living area stand out from top to bottom.

Wrapping Up Every photo we receive from our customers is unique because a little part of the customer can be found through their hard work and vision. No matter the project, big or small, we hope these examples give you inspiration of what is possible and help you come up with ideas for your own camper, trailer or motor home. To learn more you can visit our website: www.Heffrons.com or give our office a call. We look forward to hearing from you!

February 22-25, 2018 Fredericksburg, TX The RV Entrepreneur Summit is a conference for RVers or wannabe RVers who want to learn how to start, build, and grow a business on the road. All of our speakers, (Including Paul and Caroline Lacitinola, the publishers of the Vintage Camper Trailers Magazine) are entrepreneurs who will teach you how they’ve started their own businesses and made enough money on the road to maintain a full-time travel lifestyle. We’ll talk about how to establish a good work-life balance, how to use your blog as a business, and workcamping options. Plus, we’ll offer panel sessions where we’ll get personal about the realities of full-timing and how to RV-proof your marriage. Finding community when you live in an RV is hard. Like, really hard. We want this conference to be a chance for you to meet other RVers (and future RVers) who also want to travel full-time and work on the road. The goal of The RV Entrepreneur Summit is to provide helpful resources on building a remote business in your RV and facilitate community among non-retired RVers. The conference will include speakers, workshops, and panels where current RVers will share their experience of building business(es) on the road. Plus, we’re working on planning group hikes and wine tastings to keep the weekend fun. Visit www.vintagecampertrailers.com for tickets and more information.

Wood vs. Checkerboard Flooring Imagine my embarrassment when I saw the floor they had put down My wife got a hold of a copy of the Vintage Camper Trailers Magazine and was immediately bitten by the vintage trailer bug. The search was on and we finally found this 1965 Shasta Compact in Groot, West Virginia. We made the trip to Groot in seven hours. The camper passed the ice pick test and we were on our way back home. My only concern was the dry rot in the tires. But we made the seven hour trip back home without any incidents. When I went to the DMV to get a plate for the camper, the first three letters of the plate was STU. So we named the camper Stu. The first thing was to replace the tires with RV quality tires. Next I ordered a king size foam mattress, cut it using an electric carving knife for the cushions. I went to the fabric store and purchased material to cover the cushions, make curtains, and an awning. I have never sewn anything ever before but they turned out pretty darn good. The previous owner had put down a dark wood laminate floor. I replaced it with black and white checkerboard vinyl flooring.

Once we were camping and a couple stopped to admire our camper. They especially liked the checkerboard floor. I had told them how stupid the wood laminate floor had looked. They invited me to come and look at their 1968 Fan that they had just finished restoring. Imagine my embarrassment when I saw the floor they had put down was... dark wood laminate flooring!
