What our customers have to say about us

We picked up a 62 Shasta trailer and the side looked like a kid took a stick to the side of it. It was bad. We brought the skin to Hemet Valley RV and they Made a new piece. The Bottom skin is new and the top skin was old, but they look identical. It had 6 inch lines and it turned out perfect. Thanks Guys. Great job. -Barry

Five Star Plus!!! Steve and his company demonstrate what customer service should look like. Thanks so much! -Glenn I recently purchased all of the siding, trim and entry door for an 1970 11’ foot trailer that I rebuilt using only the metal frame of the original trailer. I contacted Steve at Hemet Valley RV and sent him a side view of the trailer with the dimensions on it. Steve figured out what material I needed and the amount and sent it. Everything that I needed I received in a timely fashion and it was packaged in very strong boxes...Thanks so much for the great job Steve, I have no doubt that your business will have continued success, Great Job. -Wayne M.

Extensive knowledge and quality materials. Very fair pricing and quick turn around time. Steve and Tammy are always helpful. -Larry

We had so much fun at Boot Camp this year I can’t believe we have to wait until the first weekend of March 2019 to do it again! If you were there, or know somebody that went, you know we got some rain. Rain is the arch nemesis of vintage trailers, and we did spring a few leaks. All of the campsites were on asphalt so although it was wet, it wasn’t muddy. The good news was the venue at Casa de Fruta in Hollister, California was fantastic. Indoor classrooms were dry and warm and accommodated the 200 attendees that traveled from several different states across the country to be a part of the biggest vintage trailer restoration training in the USA! We have found a home for this event at Casa de Fruta and have already rented the park for the first week of March next year. The crew that gave of their time and expertise this year will be hard to match. We were able to get experts like TIm Heintz (Heintz Design, Florida) and Steve Hingtgen (Vintage Trailer Supply, Vermont) to travel to northern California to be a part of this west coast based event. From the west coast, newcomer Denny Stone (SoCal Vintage Trailers, San Diego) and returning favorites Tim and Linda Brown (Edan Valley Garage, Colfax), had packed classes showing how they do the incredible finishes on trailer interiors. From the nearby east bay area the crew from Artistic Airstreams, Scotty, Josh and Liam, showed us how to polish aluminum and repair appliances. Adam Blair from Avalon RV in Benicia covered solar power and charging. Gary Warner, Randy Bonfantini and Rick Burros all shared the extensive knowledge they have as electricians, plumbers and mechanics. We covered a lot of ground in a couple of days and had a blast doing it. In addition to seminars on restoration, Tim Heintz delivered an interesting presentation on the history of trailers and the Tin Can Tourists. To close out the weekend Sunday morning Steve Hingtgen facilitated a round-table discussion on “Restorations and Relationships”. Not really knowing what to expect, I was pleasantly surprised when about 90% of the attendees showed up to participate. (By Sunday everybody is usually blasting off as soon as they can!) The conversation was interesting, insightful, emotional and inspiring. In a nutshell I think it validated that we (vintage trailerites) are all very like minded and have endured some of the same trials and tribulations while enjoying this hobby. We are already planning for next year and know that you will get a lot out of attending Boot Camp whether you are a novice or a pro. Save the date. Tickets go on sale soon! “Earl” was rescued by Steve Folsom of Fort Branch, Indiana after he found him partially buried in Diane Coomes’ backyard. In all caps, the name EARL is displayed on the exterior aluminum establishing the trailer’s name. Despite the trailer’s poor condition, Steve saw the potential in the 1969 Hercules.

As the second owner of Earl, Diane Coomes’ father lost interest in the trailer and it was left sitting in her Henderson, Kentucky backyard where it was used as a hang-out location for Diane’s son to listen to records. Steve became aware of the Hercules trailer through his friend, Eric Coomes, Diane’s son. As a union carpenter and antique furniture restorer, Steve had the skills needed to restore Earl. A deal was struck for $300 and Steve owned EARL. The $300 purchase turned into an $11,000 rebuild along with countless hours of work by Steve and his friends. During the restoration process, Steve became medically disabled. He shared that the restoration was a blessing to him during this time as it gave him purpose to get up and going each morning as there was always something needing to be done on the trailer. The restoration became a social event as Steve’s friends volunteered to do a lot of the labor and help Steve complete the restoration. Steve Folsom found Earl in the same city where he was manufactured. The Henderson’s Hercules Manufacturing produced travel trailers from 1969 – 1971. According to their website, http://www.herculesvanbodies. com, the company has been in business since 1902 when it opened as a buggy manufacturer in Evansville, KY. Later the business moved to Henderson, KY. Having stayed in business for over 112 years has required the company to be innovative and change with the times. Now, the company 8

www.vintagecampertrailers.com

primarily manufactures truck and van bodies for the trucking industry. According to an article written by Douglas White on www. thegleaner.com, retired president of Henderson’s Hercules Manufacturing, Joseph Banna, confirmed the limited manufacturing date of 1969 -1971 for the Hercules Trailer.

Banna said that only a few dozen Hercules trailers were constructed with limited (2-3) production models. According to Banna, confirming exact numbers is difficult as the paperwork that went along with the trailer production has been destroyed. He did say that the now vintage trailers were originally manufactured under the Henderson Trailer Company name which was later changed to Hercules. Although Henderson’s Hercules Manufacturing still uses the location where the Hercules trailer was produced, the travel trailers were a short lived part of the company’s long history. With no more than four dozen Hercules trailers produced, this is certainly another rare vintage trailer.

Holiday House Geographic Model X One of only two known to exist. Recently restored by Flyte Camp of Bend, Oregon . This unique crowd pleaser is a standout wherever it goes. Photographs by Hal Thoms In issue #30 of the VCT Magazine we shared the before photos of this rare find. The restoration of the fiberglass body proved to be extremely difficult. The fiberglass had black mold throughout that had to be removed. The ceiling was buckling and had to be completely replaced. Once those repairs were made, getting the trailer to line up correctly was another challenge. Flyte Camp only had an empty shell to work off of, so they were recreating the interior with their flare based on vintage photos. Anna wanted to highlight the design-forward window lines so the cabinetry was customized to expose them more than they were in the original design of the trailer. The Geo comes fully equipped with a solar/inverter battery system to keep you off the grid indefinitely. It has 4, 6-volt AGM batteries, and a portable solar panel from ZAMP. An on demand hot water heater is the only way to go for long showers. Accent LED lighting in, above and below the black

walnut cabinets. A full surround sound, DVD player and TV add a home theater element to this luxury build. The HVAC system is climate controlled, with the heating and a/c unit tastefully hidden under the front couch, and ducted throughout the trailer. Custom Axalta paint with pin-striping by Kurt Silva, and Diamond Back whitewall radials finish off the exterior with the same level of quality found in the interior. Chuck Pelly, the original designer of the coach, attended the Modernism Show in Palm Springs and saw the finished Geographic there for the first time! He also designed the Scarab race car and went on to found the BMW group. Production of this, the Model X trailer, was certainly in the beginning stages when it was built in 1962. There were a lot of areas that needed to be improved upon. Flyte Camps hope is that they were able to recreate the trailer that Holiday House was hoping to ultimately manufacture back in the 1960's.

The Birth of a

Tin Can Tourists Event Vintage Trailerites Unite! If you want to attend a rally, or maybe even host one, The Vintage Camper Trailers Magazine, The Tin Can Tourists, and many others, welcome you and are willing to help you put on your rally or event!

The birth of a TCT event comes about in a few different ways: phone calls, a train ride with a random stranger, emails, and members’ sense of adventure. Forrest Bone, Royal Chief of the Tin Can Tourists, called me one night and said, “Hey you are on the East Side, Port Crescent State Park?” The park called Bone wanting to start a vintage trailer show. “Are you close? Can you help?”

the event back on track! This is our 7th Year at Port Sanilac. Then, emails came, asking for us to participate in the Ferndale Retrofest during the Woodward Dream Cruise.

I replied, “I’m 180 miles away, but sure, I can help!” Bone exclaimed, “Great thanks, here’s the number, let me know if you need anything.” That is how it began, and this is our 10th Year at Port Crescent State Park!

There are great stories to tell from those two years. We had a good time, but there were too many challenges. Sometimes these events are trials by fire, and turn out something that looks like an episode of Survivor. They make for interesting stories, but the events are not always the perfect match for every venue.

A different event happened when I was riding back from Chicago on the train. A lovely lady named Rita asked if she could sit next to me. It turned out Rita was on a committee that hosted a few Tin Canners at the Port Sanilac, Michigan’s Annual Antique Boat Show, Tin Canners have a unique the prior year. The event did not go well blend of adventure, flexibility and the first time they tried it. We finished engaging personalities. From these our five hour train ride with a candid characteristics, other TCT events have discussion, and some planning – getting come to be, such as “Urban” camping, 12 www.vintagecampertrailers.com

cross-country caravans, “pop-up” camping weekends and other meet and greets. Yes, we do get invited, but sometimes we have invited ourselves. One will find both hospitality and a warm sense of welcome to be key part of any TCT event. Seasoned Tin Canners come ready to mix it up with both the first timers and old timers, plus members of the public during our Open Houses. One of our matriarchs – Dotty, when asked for her advice to the newbies said, “If you don’t have a [expletive] good time it’s your own [expletive] fault … we are all here to have a good time!” Every event contributes to the history and lexicon of TCT. The Port Crescent event has grown from 13 trailers to over 100. Open House now averages 1,500 visitors – some of them traveling 3 or 4 hours. For the thumb area of Michigan, we make it into the news for the week. The potluck dinners are legendary – both The Largest Camp Pot Luck Stir Fry, and The Crockpot Pot Luck (57 crockpots filled with home cooking). Additional entries into the lexicon include “Chapel Voices” after 11:00 p.m., Sunset Events at the Beach, the worst tchotchke contest.

A “dress code” was started for dinner - which has morphed into themed weekends. In hopes of slowing down the TCT time warp which we experience on these weekends, we added “ish” to the times listed on the agenda. But the best part of the past 10 years has been the collaboration with the Port Crescent park staff, who worked tirelessly with and for us, the visitors, and the local community, to make this a favored regional event.

The second one I coordinate - Port Sanilac, MI – is the camper part of The Vintage Antique Boat Show and Retro Fest. We set up camp at the marina and on the streets of this little town. We are welcomed by the city officials and the visitors to the open house are very kind. We join the boaters at The Captains’ dinner and interact with the residents as we shop and dine around town. Camping at the marina offers beautiful views of the lake. Last year saw a new camping experience in Wyandotte, MI. Joining the town’s Fall Fest - 3rd Friday Event - 20 campers and two motorhomes set up around a grassy lot in town. This was our first Friday evening open house. As the sun set. our campers and their lighting took on a wonderful friendly glow. One member kept count with a clicker - 722 folks toured inside her camper. We ate group meals at the different restaurants, toured the Wyandotte Museum, Water Plant, local art galleries and allowed free reign shopping. Evening campfires brought more visitors and trailer tours on Saturday. Continued on page 40

The popularity of camping in the United States continues to grow. Last year there were over half a million RVs shipped in the US according to the Recreational Vehicle Industry Association website. (www.rvia.org) 2017 was the eighth year in a row the industry increased in sales. Americans are fascinated with camping and exploring. The evidence for this is in the trailer museums around the US.

Steven Katkowsky’s Vintage Trailer Museum located near Santa Cruz, CA is a hidden gem. The personal collection of Steven and his wife Jenay is open for groups to come and explore by appointment only. The Katkowskys have an extensive collection of trailers, automobiles, camping gear and memorabilia on display. Their museum is a great destination for car clubs. Not only is the drive to the museum

breathtaking as you travel through the Redwoods, but the museum is chock full of great items dating from the 20’s into the 60’s. The Katkowsky’s Vintage Trailer Museum does not charge to visit. Mid Century A build by the publishers of the Vintage Camper Trailers Magazine Paul and Caroline Lacitinola, along with their children, Angelo and Grace, are full time vintage trailer enthusiast. Though not on the road full time, they eat, sleep and breathe the vintage trailer lifestyle. To add to this already all consuming passion, Paul had a vision to own a mobile

museum. In the spring of 2017, he mentioned to Justin Scribner of Flyte Camp, that he was looking for a Spartan to build into a museum. Justin happened to have the trailer he was looking for so Angelo and Paul took a day trip to Bend, OR to retrieve the 28ft 1955 Spartan Manor.

The cabinets and trim are original but everything else is new. 16

www.vintagecampertrailers.com

MOBILE

MUSEUM

The Spartan had been completely gutted but all of the cabinets and trim had been saved and were inside of the trailer. The build took about six months of work. John Green and Paul did most of the work on the Spartan, but the project would not have been completed without the help they received from Tim and Linda Brown. The trailer received all new FORBO marmoleum flooring, a Wilsonart laminated bathroom, Dometic toilet and a low profile Dometic Penguin air conditioner, blinds from Blinds.com and a Parallax Power supply unit. All of the paneling inside,

the Styrofoam insulation as well as all of the electrical and plumbing are new. The Mid Century Mobile Museum has already been on the road. It was debuted at the Eugene Boat and Sportsman Show in Eugene, OR in February of 2018. The design of the Mobile Museum allows the Lacitinolas to both work and camp. The Spartan contains a large display area as well as a desk, a pull out double bed, hidden flat screen tv, bathtub, shower and toilet. It is both luxurious and vintage! The original layout does not currently have the original stand-up stove or a full size refrigerator (to allow for more space for displaying vintage camping gear.) The original floor plan can easily be outfitted with these items if desired. The additions of holding tanks and 12v lighting make this vintage aluminum BETTER than it was originally! Polished on the bottom half and left bare aluminum on the top, the Spartan is a real eye catcher. It will be on display at several rallies this coming camping season. You can see the museum displayed at the Pismo Beach, California Rally in

This display wall of water jugs is one of the few liberties we took with the original floor-plan. Another was replacing one of the twin beds with a desk. www.vintagecampertrailers.com

your event, let the Lacitinolas know. They are on the road more and more as they continue to preach the gospel of vintage camper trailers and share their love for old aluminum through the Vintage Camper Trailer Magazine.

This 1955 Spartan Manor is a mid-century mobile museum featuring over 100 water jugs, ice chests and thermoses from the 1940's through the 1960's. Sprinkled in to the display are lanterns and stoves and other camping related gear from the era. 18

One-of-a-Kind Home Built Creations Sometime in the late 1940's, Nathan A. (Bud) Gilbert and his friend built two tent trailers. It is believed they were constructed from plans in a Popular Mechanics Magazine. Story and Photographs shared by Russ Blair

Finding original trailers is always amazing.

Finding original trailers with a known history is a bonus. Recently we met Russ Blair who shared his family’s story about their 1947 home built tent trailer. The story goes that sometime between 1947 and 1950 Russ’s Great Uncle Nathan A. (Bud) Gilbert and his friend in Whittier, California built two tent trailers. His friend built a slightly larger version after they completed Bud’s tent trailer. It is believed to have been constructed by following plans that were in a Popular Mechanics type magazine but the family has been unable to confirm that. Many of the parts were military surplus (aluminum, snaps for the canvas, etc.). It is equipped with vacuum brakes, although they have never been used. It was made with an ice box and a dry-goods cabinet that are accessible from the interior and exterior. It also has numerous drawers and cabinets inside. It has a sink, a butane stove, and a removable folding table. Many of the original camping, cooking, and eating utensils are still inside and are used along with the trailer. The canvas and mattresses are also original. 20

www.vintagecampertrailers.com

Buttoned up to travel, this family has camped in this home built tent trailer for decades.

The trailer was given to Russ’s parents, Nolan and Carol Lee Blair, in the early 1960s and was used every year by his family as he was growing up. It was last used by them in 1978 and then stored until the early 1990s when it was used for a few years before once again going back into storage. The family started regularly using the trailer again in 2000, when it was resurrected by Lisa and Kirk Ramos, Nolan and

Carol’s daughter and on-in-law. It has been used almost annually since then. It is destined to be passed on to Lisa and Kirk’s youngest daughter, Ava, who will carry on the tradition. The entire family has many fond memories of camping in it while growing up. Four generations have used it so far and the family hopes it will continue to be used for many more generations to come.

1972 TORONADO RV Builder: Wendell Cook Yuba City, CA Wendell, Circa. 1970's 26

www.vintagecampertrailers.com

Chick Magnet Paul Lacitinola, the publisher of Vintage Camper Trailers Magazine, is often asked how he finds vintage camper trailers. Paul’s answer is always the same; “take a different route home and look in back yards!” That is exactly how he found “The Chick Magnet!” Driving through Yuba City, CA, Paul spotted an interesting RV roof line. Never one to pass on he possibility of finding something interesting, Paul got out and started poking around to see what was behind the fence. The son of the property owner saw Paul taking a look and came over to see what in the world this crazy fella was doing in his parent’s yard. After some exacting questions, Bryan , the owners son, realized Paul wasn’t trying to rob his parents. At the time of the initial contact, the family was not ready to sell the RV, but Paul gave them his number and let them know he was interested in telling their story in the Vintage Camper Trailers Magazine and possibly buying it if they decided to sell. Six months later, the call came. Due to some life changes, he time had come to sell the Toronado. The 1972 Toronado is a one of a kind, homebuilt RV. In 1979 Wendell and Helen Cook took 8 months, a 1972 Toronado Oldsmobile car and $18,000 to build their own RV. Wendell had an “outdoor childhood” camping, hunting and fishing. While raising his three

boys, he wanted to share that lifestyle with them. The idea of traveling in a self-contained vehicle started Wendell’s journey to design, engineer and fabricate his dream RV. Wendell grew up on a farm in an era that required ingenuity and grit. Running to

Paul Lacitinola with Helen and Wendell Cook Yuba City, California - March, 2018 town to buy what was needed wasn’t an option, so he learned how to create and build. He learned the lesson well. At 89 years young, Wendell was as sharp as a tack as he relayed how he created his very own RV. After the chassis was complete, Wendell

used a milk carton to sit on while he drove it down to the local muffler shop where he bought the exhaust tubing he used to frame the Toronado. On his way, he would pass the local sheriff who would wag his finger at him and shake his head! Bryan chimed in that his dad would also pass the high school and his buddies would be sure to point out his dad driving by on an open framed RV chassis. The MEMORIES! While visiting with Wendell about his RV he started a story with; “When I was in prison…” His son, Bryan just grinned. The story continued that Wendell would take the RV and live in it while he worked for the CA Youth Authority as a contractor doing renovations and new construction with the incarcerated youth. Helen would often join him there and said that the RV was always comfortable and it seemed like a vacation to her because it wasn’t much to keep clean! The last 38 years have seen grand adventures for the Cooks. have traveled over 80,000 miles Toronado and have collected

Wendell bragged that he drove all the way from Yuba City, CA to Palm Springs, CA without fueling up! When he built the RV he designed it to run on both gas and propane just by flipping a switch. While getting up to speed or climbing hills, Wendell used gas. When he hit a flat stretch, he would switch to propane. No stopping required on their 530 mile trip! In the sharing of stories, it was relayed to Paul that Wendell was nicknamed “Chick” following a bout with the chicken pox. The Toronado is beautiful and definitely gets some looks traveling down the freeway. With its “magnetic” personality, it was dubbed the “Chick Magnet”, by Paul, in honor of Wendell. Paul is honored that the Cook family has passed on their family treasure to him to share its story and get it back on the road.

S PA R TA N T R A I L E R S Equal Beauty To this day, Spartan trailers equal beauty in design, comfort, and quality. Story and Photographs by Richard Cook Until I recently became a vintage trailerite, I didn’t know about Spartan trailers. Being a long-time pilot and vintage aircraft admirer, however, I’ve known about Spartan Executive airplanes for decades. These sleek, highly-polished, propellor-driven aircraft were the Learjets of their day when the Spartan Aircraft Company manufactured them during the late-1930s. During the Second World War, Spartan turned its attention to military aircraft, expanding its workforce and production facilities to help with the war effort, thus pushing the Executive to the sideline.

30

www.vintagecampertrailers.com

By war’s end, the Executive was old technology, so Spartan developed a line of travel trailers to keep their production plants open and workers employed. Utilizing the same monocoque technology used on the Executive, Spartan trailers were manufactured using lightweight aluminum ribs covered by stressed aluminum skins, creating an art deco exterior and cavernous interior. Much too expensive to build and extremely expensive to buy, the company closed its doors in 1962, selling its name to the Spartan School of Aeronautics (later changed to Spartan College of Aeronautics

and Technology, which still trains pilots, aircraft mechanics, and aviation electronics technicians in Tulsa,OK). To this day, Spartan trailers equal beauty in design, comfort, and quality. Many are showing up at vintage trailer rallies around the country and almost always in pristine condition, such as the 1953 Spartan Imperial Mansion owned by Walter and Gloria Sams of Colbert, GA, a double-ender which won “Fan Favorite at the Southern Vintage Trailer Friends 2017 Groovy Beach Bash in Jekyll Island, GA. This frame-up restoration also made an appearance at the 2017 Gathering Of The Times Vintage Trailer Rally in Pine Mountain, GA. Although decorated with correct period furnishings and appliances, this Spartan also has modern conveniences smartly hidden out of sight (microwave, flat-screen tv, etc.), making it a true home away from home (...which brings us to the story behind the story). Above and on facing page: 1953 Spartan Imperial Mansion owned by Walter and Gloria Sams of Colbert, GA.

Before Gloria Sams was born, her parents became first-time home buyers when they purchased a new Spartanette. Soon Gloria was born, followed shortly thereafter by her brother. Because the Spartanette was too small for a family of four, Gloria’s parents traded up for a Spartan Imperial Mansion (...exactly like the one she and Walter restored for their empty-nester years). Gloria lived a happy childhood in her parents’ Imperial Mansion until the age of twelve. In fact, she displays photographs from that childhood in the entranceway of her restored Imperial Mansion (...which is configured to sleep only two people to make it a true empty-nester’s home away from home). Another gorgeous restoration is the 1954 Spartan Mansion owned by Steve Allen and Doug Bachman of Wilton Manors, FL, which made an appearance at the Tin Can Tourists 11th Annual Unity Settlement Gathering & Show in Estero, FL in November 2017. already watched this 1954 film, do so soon for a hilarious evening. It features vintage travel trailers and trailer parks in the 1950s. Not all vintage Spartans are restored. While attending a TCT event recently, a local resident mentioned an abandoned Spartan about two miles away from the campground. After hunting down and investigating the status of the trailer, it turned out to be a 1956 Imperial Mansion park model that had been sitting on the property since the early-1960s and unused for the past two decades. The exterior seemed to be in good condition, but curtains prevented an interior inspection. The trailer was not for sale. Still, it’s nice to dream about finding, restoring, and living in a beauty such as a Spartan! When Brandon Morrison was approached by Grace’s daughter in the fall of 2015, the craftsmanship of Glennis was still evident. The Redwood Gum plywood gave the cabinet doors a two tone effect and the Douglas Fir plywood walls were as rare as the Tam

herself. Seeing past the condition of the back wall, which had been left to the elements, we purchased the Tam, which is 20 foot long with a single axel, from Brandon in the spring of 2016 – as he regretfully lacked the facility to restore her. Our first step in the extensive restoration process was to remove the

Celotex and insulation. Thankfully the termites favored the siding for meals and our work revealed a solid, wellbuilt trailer! For additional strength, we replaced the perimeter of the original wood frame (below the exterior walls) with angle iron. A new axle has been fitted, upgrading the brakes to electric. The interior walls have been insulated (Prodex), sanded, and finished using the French Polish method (Pratt & Lambert #38 varnish). In the kitchen, the cabinets have been restored and reproduction r e d Marmoleum applied to the counter

top. As we plan to travel America as the Tam was intended, some modern conveniences have been added: The Coleman Preway range is a facade that houses a microwave; the nameplate and 1940s Signature door handle of the ice box adorn a small refrigerator. We were lucky to find original tiles from the era to replace the flooring. The Click Clack sofa has been restored and reupholstered with period correct fabric. Unfortunately the steel Marvel windows were beyond repair and have been replaced with 1950s aluminum ones, which are framed by curtains made from reproduction fabric. The original pocket screen door and lighting fixtures remain – where the latter benefits from new breakers and wiring. To prevent history from repeating itself, aluminum has been instated in lieu of the not so weather proof Celotex siding and canvas roof that Glennis chose. 60 years later, our 1947 Tam proudly brings his bespoke design back to the highways and byways of America.

BEFORE THEY WERE VINTAGE

1946 Curtis Wright Model 1 The 16' trailer was purchased new by Ken and Elaine Hunter of Manhattan Beach, CA. They and their three children camped extensively in it and their daughter, Barb kept it all these years . Ken had the kids use a bicycle pump and a ten gallon water tank to cool their 1949 Ford flathead as it towed up the Grapevine and other narrow grades of the day. While returning from Minnesota, and after breakfast with ranch friends near Pocatello, ID, they were making a (unusual for them) nighttime sprint for home down US 91 (now I-15). Their 1961 Ford Galaxie hit a bull South of 36

St George, UT and jackknifed with a fin gashing the front of CW #429. Both tipped on their sides. The bull ambled into the desert and none of the family were hurt. They righted the Galaxie and headed for a motel, leaving CW #429 by the road. The next morning a tow truck righted the accident. The Hunters were able to tow it home and then to their land in Oak Grove, CA (San Diego Cty), just off Old Truck Trail Road. It rested from August of 1961; the same month Barak Obama was born, the Berlin Wall was built, “Tossin’ and Turnin” by Bobby Lewis was the #1 song, Kennedy was presi-

dent, “Route 66” was on TV and “The Parent Trap” at the theaters. It was there until November of 2016. The wreck knocked off the curbside cabinets, tweaked the frame, bowed the streetside wall and bent various corners, Maple syrup sprayed everywhere, the title was lost. CW #429 became storage for Ken’s workshop and a home for generations of mice. Sun and rain took their toll.

Sounds perfect for someones next restoration project! A trailer this rare does not come along often in ANY condition.

AS FOUND

CW1 #429 is the earliest CW found to date. Dal and Jane Smilie accepted the responsibility of rescuing it and had Chris and Trina Chapman of Oregon City, OR return it to its former glory.

Retro Diners and

By: Heffron’s A Moment In Time Retro Design Over the years we’ve had the privilege of working with some great restaurants and diners across the country and throughout the world. In fact we often have RV customers ask us about the locations they see in our photo gallery. While it would be impossible to list them all, we thought it would be fun to mention some of our favorite destinations worth visiting on your next road trip.

(C) Chatham Filling Station - Chatham, MA (photo ottom left) Website: www.chathamfillingstation.com The Chatham Filling Station is known for serving some of the best breakfast in Chatham, MA. In fact the Cape Code Times called their “filling station sandwich” phenomenal. Inside you’ll find a great atmosphere filled with vintage memorabilia from the era of roadside diners. (D) Fizz Soda Fountain – Red Bank, NJ Facebook: www.facebook.com/FizzSodaFountainRB/

(A) Anthony’s Food Shop – York, ME Website: www.anthonysfoodshop.com Anthony’s Food Shop has been around since 1989 and they do it all. They have a wood-stone fire-deck pizza oven, fully equipped scratch bakery, café, and coffee roasting facility. They’ve become one of the most iconic establishments on the seacoast.

The Fizz Soda Fountain is a 50’s inspired retro restaurant that wanted to be as authentic to the 1950s as possible. The location features turquoise stools at a counter trimmed in metal banding, along with a restored 1940 Weber Soda Fountain. They serve Pat LaFrieda original blend burgers, sundaes and floats featuring Nastos ice cream and more. (E) Joe’s Italian Ice - Cocoa Anaheim, CA Website: www.joesice.com

(B) The Candy Bank - Mandeville, LA (photo above) Facebook: www.facebook.com/TheCandyBank/ The Candy Bank is a nostalgic candy store featuring a gazillion different candies, an out-of-this world ice cream parlor and a large variety of homemade fudge in Old Mandeville near New Orleans. They also host birthday parties, which sounds like a child’s dream come true! 38

There’s no guess work when it comes to what Joe’s specializes in. They aren’t shy about telling you they have the best Italian Ice on the planet. All recipes are created in house and sold exclusively at Joe’s. If Italian Ice isn’t your thing they also offer ice cream and lattes. If you are visiting California, this is a place worth making the trip for. (F) Kentucky Downs - Franklin, KY Website: www.kentuckydowns.com

(C) Chatham Filling Station

www.vintagecampertrailers.com

The next time you’re visiting the Kentucky Downs, don’t forget to visit their all new Lucky 7s Diner. The diner is conveniently located right next to the gaming floor. With a classic 1950s diner vibe, it’s the perfect place for a juicy burger, milkshake, all-day breakfast, and much more.

and satisfied! Try our signature "Smashed Burger", or Velvet hand-dipped ice cream and Shakes. (See photos below) (L) The Sunliner Diner – Gulf Shores, Alabama The Sunliner Diner is turning back the hands of time – to the 1950s. Where family and friends can connect over hamburgers and cherry pie, listen to rock-n-roll and even take a spin down Beach Road in one of the classic Sunliner convertibles available to rent in front of the restaurant. (G) Roxberry Juice - Spanish Fork, UT Website: www.roxberryjuice.com At Roxberry you’ll find some of the best quality Smoothies, Healthy Bowls and Fresh Pressed Juices available. You’ll also have the peace of knowing that they have your health in mind. That’s because they don’t believe in syrups, purees, powders and potions. Instead Roxberry uses real fruit and real vegetables. (H) Shorty’s – Hamilton, Ontario Website: www.shortyspizza.ca If you’re in Canada and looking for some great NYC/Brooklyn style pizza than be sure to check out Shorty’s. They plan to be opening around June so if you happen to be in the area when they open, tell them that Heffrons.com sent you.

Use this guide to plan your next trip. The hardest part was narrowing down our list and trying not to leave anyone out. To check out more locations or to purchase some retro furniture of your own, visit our website: www.heffrons.com or give our office a call. We look forward to hearing from you!

(I) The Downtown Diner - Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta Website: www.facebook.com/The-Downtown-Diner-529097580475199/ The Downtown Diner has been a huge hit in Alberta, Canada. In fact, they are currently in the process of moving to a bigger location in June. While they wait, they remain in their current location but under a new name: The Ol’Town Burger Company. The concept is to feature ten different burgers and five different sides. A fun idea while they wait to reopen. (J) The Duce - Phoenix, AZ Website: www.theducephx.com Slide open the vintage steel doors and you’ll ask yourself, “where the heck am I?” The Duce is a one of a kind location that features great food, music, games and even a boxing ring. The Duce has even been featured on ESPN’s Mike & Mike in the Morning and the TV show “Diners, Driveins and Dives” with Guy Fieri. (K) The Joint – Mt Vernon, Ohio Website: www.thejointmv.com A new twist on the old 50s-style diner. Modern flair and an updated menu that respects the past but gives the new kids a chance to shine. You'll fall in love with the environment way before you get to the food. We like to be the best. The best food, the best service, and the best location in town! EARL continued from page 9 Could it be the only one left? Steve has completely restored the trailer. Keeping the exterior original while updating the interior with modern conveniences with a period-correct feel. He switched out the original ice box for a 1969 Swedish refrigerator that runs on electricity, added electrical receptacles and even installed a hidden stereo and speakers. Lora Stuck is a model from Olney, Illinois. She models many different genres but particularly loves vintage

photo shoots. You can say that Lora has “caught the vintage bug!” She enjoys participating in Pinup contests, and is intrigued by the style and nostalgia of everything vintage! Lora met Steven Folsom, Earls’s owner, at the 3rd Annual Southeastern Illinois Vintage

Trailer Rally at Red Hills State Park in Sumner, IL. She walked around the park and took pictures with several of the vintage camper trailers that were on display. “Steven’s camper really stood out to me.” Lora said. “It had a particularly interesting back story.” After discussing it with Steven, Lora decided to set up a photo shoot with his camper at one of her favorite campsites, Taylor Lake Campground in Olney, IL. Lora shared with us: “I feel truly honored to have had the opportunity to take pictures with this rare vintage gem!”
