All events are held at our clubrooms unless otherwise specified.

Note

The clubrooms are open on the second and fourth Thursday evenings of the month from 7:30pm until 10:00pm and EVERY Saturday afternoon from 4:30pm until 6:30pm. Our Spares Dept & Library are open during the clubrooms opening hours PLUS Thursday mornings from 9:00am ’til noon.

Chairman’s Report

The clubrooms were almost full to capacity for our AGM on Saturday 29th June. It was great to see members attending, supporting the running of our Branch and to support our 25 and 35 year Continuous Membership Badge recipients. Congratulations to all of these recipients.

Our Treasurer, Ian Hubbard, outlined our financial position and informed members that $50,000.00 has been set aside for future maintenance. After outlining our income from subscriptions, he stated that we can no longer cover our expenses without breaking into our term deposits and moved that our annual levy be increased by $10.00 per member. This motion was carried.

Along with myself as Chairman, members Glenn Morris, Jodi Tomlin, Ian Hubbard and Tracey Winterbottom retained their positions as Vice Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer, and Club Captain respectively, Jodi also has Delegate added to her roll. Three existing committee members, Lynda and Martin Spicer and Jeremy Lambert also retained their positions. We welcome Rory King onto the committee. Rory will take on the Maintenance Officer roll which became vacant due to Russel McAlpine stepping down as he and Jocelyn have moved north to Warkworth. They remain Auckland Branch members, but understandably, Russel has resigned from committee due to the travelling distance to attend meetings and bar duties.

It was a pleasure to have Mrs Royce Shears come and present the Bill Shears trophy, an award given to a member/members for outstanding service. This year it was awarded to Russel and Jocelyn McAlpine. Russel and Jocelyn were also presented with a Prezzie Card and bouquet of flowers for their involvement in our Branch over the last 50+ years – Russel having been Chairman and overseer of both the building of the barn and also the re-roofing and painting last year.

The Annual Trophies were awarded, see the pictorial details of the presentations later in this Bulletin.

As there were no items of General Business, the meeting was closed at 3.37pm and members chatted over a cup of tea or coffee and enjoyed afternoon tea prepared by Lynda Spicer. Thank you Lynda.

Coming up over the next couple of months –

• Gatsby Mid-Winter Social Evening - 20 July

• VCC National Daffodil Day for Fundraising for Cancer 25 August.

I look forward to seeing you, particularly at both of the above events. Shaaran.

Club Captain’s Log

For our June run we enjoyed a wonderful drive up the Awhitu Peninsula, in reasonable sunshine, after a forecast that had me thinking I would find no one at the start!!

A picnic lunch was had back in Waiuku and then some of the group took the opportunity to wander through the Waiuku Museum. This museum has a wonderful collection of all sorts from days gone by and is full of well documented local history, and knowledgeable volunteers happy to talk about exhibits. Like so many groups, they are short on money and volunteers to keep thing’s going but there is real potential here to hold days that would certainly attract the general public, due to the location, the nearby estuary where there is a local scenic boat trip and the Glenbrook train being able to come into Waiuku.

This month, Sunday 28 July, our club run will be visiting the Rangipo Museum and Pa site – just out of Kaiaua. Rob will give us a guided tour, the museum is in the old woolshed on Rangipo Station, the area has been occupied for several hundred years. BYO lunch and chair. There is a $10 charge at the site and the tour takes approximately 1.5 hours. We’re starting at Ardmore Café, Harvard Lane, at Ardmore Airport. The first vehicle away will be at 11am. Arrive early and have brunch or coffee.

Sunday 25 August is Daffodil Day - our VCC National Day - to promote both our activities and the profile of the club plus raise money for the NZ Cancer Society. This year we are promised a great day out at the Fo Guang Shan Buddhist Temple in Flat Bush. They are really looking forward to helping us raise the money for the Cancer Society. We will be putting our cars on display and be able to enjoy the day, promoting our Club and chatting with the visitors. I’m told the café provides excellent food and the lotus tea is a “must try”.

Why not prepare an information board for your vehicle to add some interest for the public. You can add as much or as little detail as you like. If you want a hand with this, give me a shout.

Sunday September 29 our club run is going to start out north-west of the city and we will have a day in Mangawhai, visiting the local museum, including seeing the work going on preserving the “Daring” (note this month’s Club Night guest speaker is talking about the Daring Project), we’ll also see artwork, a chocolate factory and we’ll have lunch at the tavern. There will be a one off charge to cover the day’s activity –see next month’s Bulletin.

Looking forward to seeing you out supporting the branch. Tracey

2024 AGM Awards

The Bill Shears Memorial Trophy

For outstanding service to our branch.

This trophy is awarded based on nomination by fellow member/s. When multiple nominations exist the Chairman and Secretary make the final decision. Follows is a concatenation of the citations provided for this year’s recipients.

2024 Recipients: Russel & Jocelyn McAlpine

Russel has served our Branch over many years as Club Captain, Vice Chairman, Chairman (for 5 years), Committee member on and off for several years and is on our current committee looking after Building Maintenance. Jocelyn has supported Russel, being beside him every step of the way.

Jocelyn was Editor of the Bulletin for a couple of years, a task which takes a lot of time, especially as she did this when their boys were little. She is in the Beaded Wheels Scribe team, writing for Branch News. Jocelyn is currently our gardener at the clubrooms, which requires a great deal of her time and her effort makes the gardens look wonderful.

Russel and Jocelyn work well as a team, having plotted many rallies over the years, not only when Russel was Club Captain, but also many of our major rallies such as the Vintage Muster, Hunua 100, PV Rally, Ladies Run and the Experts Rally. They have also been involved on the Committee for the National North Island Easter Rally, which Auckland Branch hosted and assisted on the National Motorcycle Rally when it was hosted by Auckland and Waikato Branches. These all take a lot of time, which they are happy to do for our Branch.

Finally, we cannot forget the number of times that Russel has been Santa at the Gymnic, stylishly arriving in a Model A driven by Santa’s Little Helper, Jocelyn.

We believe their service to the Auckland Branch deserves recognition.

Shaaran presents Russel and Jocelyn with a Prezzy Card and flowers to go with the Trophy.

2024 AGM Awards

Russel & Jocelyn receive the Bill Shears Memorial Trophy from Mrs Royce Shears.

Russel and Jocelyn were honoured to be presented the trophy by Royce. It meant a lot to them as Bill and Royce have been great friends of theirs since Russel joined the club in 1968.

(Editor: I hope Royce does not mind me telling you this, she moved into a rest home the week of the AGM at 97 years old.)

Veteran Section Report

The June meeting was well attended with sixteen people present and an apology from Phil Henley.

Peter Alderdice presented an option for veterans for the newly named Hunua Spring Tour, formerly Hunua 100. Peter’s suggestion was to have a shorter 30 km run for veterans starting at Maramarua. This idea was favourably received, however most present considered that they would prefer a Maramarua finishing point rather than the finishing point suggested by Peter, as most entrants would have to trailer to Maramarua and didn't want the extra drive to load their trailers. Peter also brought along an exhaust valve from his veteran Harley.

David Oliver went on a Model T Ford run starting from Gordonton, they had lunch at Hampton Downs, unfortunately he had the misfortune to snap his crankshaft, but a friend in the Model T club had a spare one which David can use.

Barry Birchall has sold his 1903 Cadillac to the Nelson area from where the car was originally sold. He also produced a photo of Alan Meridith’s 1903 Etoile. Tim Edney has been in Nelson and is concentrating on P60V Citroens rather than veterans at the moment.

Although not automotive related, Roy Sharman brought a saddle used by a Colonel Aldridge from Waiuku in World War One. If I remember correctly Colonel Aldridge fought in Palestine under General Allenby.

Terry Jenks 1917 Dodge is ok, however, Terry raised issues about externally mounted VIC stickers failing.

Denis Lowe brought in an interesting book Used Car Monthly from 1938-39, a vacuum booster pump sold by Motor Specs to enhance the performance of vacuum windscreen wipers and also a water injector to enhance vehicle performance.

Our chair Shaaran Price was present and advised that despite two floods the Clement Bayard engine still turned freely and they are doing an extension on the higher part of their section, to house their motor cycles away from any potential flood issues.

That's it for this month.

Motorcycle Notes

By the time we were on the motorway heading for Penrose we had a full car. Lynda and I had the two older grand children Riley and Isabella with us plus we collected Malcolm Brown at Bombay. Saturday afternoon motorway traffic was its usual slow crawl through to Manukau. As we pulled into the club rooms the sun came out.

Our guest speaker, Graham Viall, arrived at the same time. Lynda went inside and set about getting the afternoon tea set up. I helped Graham bring his BSA A65 into the club rooms. There were 12 bikes parked out the back, and 46 people in attendance.

VISITORS

Brett Cronin, a local from Onehunga, was riding past the clubrooms on his red Vespa scooter, when he saw the bikes parking up so he came in to see us and then stayed for the meeting.

Rod Smith, a long time member who has moved down to the Bay of Plenty, turned up to see us.

The meeting commenced with the customary joke told by Martin told however, this month’s joke was supplied by Brian & Nancy Carkeek.

REPORTS

Martin told us about the recent Northland Motorcycle Rally that he and 25 other Auckland members took part in, there were over 80 riders at the start, the run went from Whangarei up to Russel and back, it was a very good days ride.

Martin then told us about the Kaiaua Fish & Chip run that had around 25 motorcycles and 15 cars that made it to Kaiaua for lunch, a good day out.

Member Ditch Keeling told us about recent Norton and Ducati club runs that he and member Karen Molesworth had been riding their Nortons on.

GENERAL BUSINESS

Peter Alderdice spoke to us about this October’ s “Hunua Spring Tour”, previously the Hunua 100, that he and Paul Tomlin won last year. This year’s event will be run on the weekend BEFORE Labour weekend and be on the Saturday rather than Sunday. The run will be approx. 70 miles long. Peter emphasized that it is a TOUR and that you choose to opt-in IF you want to be competitive, thus hoping more members will attend. Peter pointed out too that in the afternoon section we will visit a really interesting place, a world-class facility NOT to be missed. The tour will be motorcycle friendly, so please guys do support this, it’s the branches flagship event, 19th October, MARK YOUR DIARIES NOW.

Motorcycle Notes

Peter then went on to mention that the entry form will be coming out in July for next year ’s National Motorcycle Rally, if anyone wants to join the group that’s going to this event, give Peter a call 021 743 906.

Member John Shennan told us about the new BSA Gold Star 650 singles that have just arrived in New Zealand, they're priced from $10,990 to $12,590.

MOTORCYCLE COORDINATOR ELECTION

Martin told the members that it was the branches AGM on the 29th June which meant it was time to elect the motorcycle coordinator for the next 12 months, he asked for nominations for this position, it seemed to me that everyone was saying Martin Spicer, there wasn't any other names put forward therefore Martin accepted the position, and thanked the members for supporting him again.

COMING UP

7th July motorcycle run (yes, yesterday late Bulletin!). Member Trevor Hackett invited us to visit his factory, KZ Marine Group, a proudly New Zealand based company with a global focus. They have built themselves a reputation as an industry leader with specialist rigging systems, in-boom furling and mainsail designs, innovative free flying furlers and custom hardware. Commissioned by mast manufacturers, yacht riggers, sail-makers, and top elite racing teams alike. We’ll hear all about the visit at the July meeting.

20th July motorcycle meeting, guest speaker will be Peter Honda Cooper. Peter is coming up from Waihi, Peter is an ex Californian, he has been involved with the classic motorcycle racing register, and has been a commentator at the Meremere drags. Peter has a large collection of small motorcycles and scooters, he said he will bring along something interesting for us to look at.

GUEST SPEAKER

Today's speaker was member Graham Viall. Graham brought along his 1970 BSA A65 ‘’Frightning’’ (Lightning). Graham has a large bike collection that he has been restoring over many years, he had quite a few excess parts in storage, he decided to build up a BSA from parts he had. He bought a new old stock frame from British Motorcycle Parts, he had a Lightning engine, alloy rear wheel and front forks and a new orange Star Fire peanut petrol tank, he bought a new alloy front rim, the wheels were rebuilt with stainless spokes. A host of other parts were found, he bought a pair of USA high rise bars and high level exhaust pipes. The engine had been stripped and checked over by an ex BSA factory works mechanic. Graham matched the orange paint for the mudguards and side panels. The bike is a stunning looker. Graham then started it up, wow what a great sound it made on those straight through pipes. He then answered questions from the floor.

Motorcycle Notes

continued

Graham finished the meeting by telling us about the progress for the up coming Star Insurance New Zealand Motorcycle Show, being held at ASB Showgrounds, Green Lane on 5th & 6th October. Graham acknowledged that our branch has always been the largest club stand at every classic motorcycle show since the beginning. At the last show held at the ASB Showgrounds we had 37 motorcycles on display, so come on you guys lets aim for that number again!

Martin thanked Graham for coming and telling us the BSA’s story.

Keep those 2, 3 & 4 wheels turning safely.

Martin Spicer and Jack Clark

The turnout last month was quite outstanding. We ran out of Route Instructions, quickly had some more printed courtesy of the Mohair Gift shop (support them when you can) and hopefully everyone got a copy. How many were there? We believe about thirty five including three two-wheelers (Don Green, Ian Bell, and Trevor Hackett). Adding to the starters were some who went direct to the finish, that’ s okay so long as we know you are doing that please. Sometimes the briefing and/or the instructions have important info pertinent to that day.

It was a short run, basically down to Pokeno and back. Over mainly familiar roads but in the reverse direction to the usual, taking us to member Barry Phillips’ place where he has established a private museum in a shed we all aspire to. The word “shed” is under-stating it. It is so spick and span and in one corner is a replica of an old time garage complete with petrol bowsers and other old automobilia.

Barry has been a member now for fifty years, has been involved in heavy trucks for all that time and has an impressive record in Motorsport, mainly saloon cars and long distance endurance racing. His collection includes two of the cars raced by himself, plus some very collectible cars from other well known names of that era.

Thank you to Barry and his son Graeme for their hospitality. We are indebted to you and others of your ilk for having saved such collections and for making them readily available for today’s enthusiasts to view.

This month we are going to visit a long time good friend of George Mihaljevich who has built a barn on his son’s 20 acre farm situated high up in the back of Oratia with a fabulous north-easterly view with the Sky Tower in the background. The farm has quite a number exotic animals and birds.

The windy no exit road to get there is through thick bush until entering the property. It is like entering an old town of a cowboy movie set and then John’s barn. A considerable amount of George’s treasures have found a new home there, together with a lifetime of John’s gathering of an incredible amount of automobilia, that surrounds his collection of vehicles.

It doesn’t stop there, John has also built an attic for his wife Pat’s own very interesting museum. The drive from Westgate to get there would have to rate amongst our best. This run is one not to be missed and we will be starting later to allow for the club members south of the city to avoid the worst of the morning traffic. We ask that you arrive at Westgate between 10.30am and 11.00am. We are going to have 2 starts, the first following Norm’s briefing at 10.50am, and mine at 11.15am.

Mid-week Tourers

For those who cannot trust the traffic will allow you to be at Westgate on time, I am happy to email the route instructions if requested. I have planned for the first vehicle to arrive at midday. Should anyone choose not to do the run and go directly to the destination please DO NOT arrive before midday because the gate will be locke

Library Notes

This month we would like to acknowledge a donation of books from Glen Paul. Included were some books on restoration and repairs relating to vintage and classic cars, and these will be added to our growing collection of books on the subject of maintenance and restoration.

The Penrose library has approximately 140 books covering the restoration of classic, vintage and veteran cars and motor cycles. They cover a diverse range of topics from Antique Brass work to Upholstery and everything in between. There are model specific books such as Ford Model A and Ts, Chevrolets, VWs, Austin Healy, MGs to name a few, as well as general books that cover all types of wooden and metal body work, with tips on working with these materials. There are many books covering electrical and mechanical topics from magnetos to gearboxes, as well as manuals on panel beating covering common techniques of joining metal, to the use of specialised tools such as the English Wheel.

Two worthwhile publications in our collection worth mentioning are: NZVCC Repair and Restoration Technical Manual 2001, and The Restoration of Vintage and Thoroughbred Cars by Brian Morgan and Richard C Wheatley. The VCC manual contains in one place, a great deal of important general mechanical specifications, tolerances etc for the guidance of the Vintage car restorer. Brian Morgan and Richard C Wheatley’s book also contains helpful information and general tips regarding vehicle restoration and is well illustrated.

Spares Dept. Update

In the June Bulletin we had a pic of this cute little device and because we didn’t know what it was we asked what is it? Well, now we know. It is a puller for removing the hands off old clocks and what’s more it has a kind loving new home.

We spend quite a bit of time identifying various items before deciding whether they are worthy of our precious wall space, or should we stock them for sale. We often call on members of the library team and also our guru Barry Robert, to help with identification. Follows are some items that the team were not sufficiently qualified to identify, so we are therefore calling on our club members to help us. Call one of our team if you can help. John Stokes 027 277 2108, John Towers 021 524 400, Bill Hulse 022 429 3812, or Jack Nazer 027 483 6666.

Is it a coil for what?

Spares Dept. Update

We have kept a number of special tools that we plan to lend to club members for a specific period, allowing enough time to finish the job they are required for. We have found, having been hidden for possibly decades, a new looking PORTAPOWER kit that would require a skilled operator for its use. The question is: are there any club members out there that have, or plan to have, a project that would require the use of this piece of equipment? Please let Jack Nazer know.

Our Speaker will be: LARRY PAUL on the Daring Project.

After almost 160-years, an ill-fated unique vessel has returned to its final resting place of Mangawhai, welcomed by a lone piper in an emotional dawn ceremony. The Daring is a 17m schooner built from Kauri by a Nova Scotian boat builder in Mangawhai in 1863. She was used to transport goods along the coast before there were roads or rail. But, eight months later, she stranded at Waikato Heads and was reported a wreck, over the years she was covered by sand, until being rediscovered.

See you there - Thursday, July 27th - 7:30pm

June Club Night Review

On a cold wintery night we had our June Club Night. There were around 20 attending.

Our guest speaker was David Weisz-Koves. David is the owner of a new business that's only been going for a few months. The business is local, just down the road, at 143 Captain Springs Road.

They are one of only a small number that are into automotive detailing using subzero dry ice. They can clean the undersides of vehicles, wheel arches, engines, and many other parts. The process can remove surface rust, and years of built up dirt and grime. It will not damage glass or rubber or electrical wiring and components.

David showed a video on how the process works, and answered questions from the floor, he left brochures in the club rooms for those that are interested. For more information google

Kaihere School Visit

A couple of months ago the Principal of Kaihere School asked if we could help them out with some cars to show to the students, as they finished a project about early land transport. How welcome to receive plenty of notice, which enabled us to cobble together a group and a suggested programme. All too often the Club is asked with insufficient time to do much.

Thank you to Jodi and Paul Tomlin who were quick to offer their Harley-Davidson combination, Diane and Peter Coleman who likewise didn’t hesitate to bring their ‘60’s Singer (aka the Harry Potter Car named by the children), and they convinced Bruce and Janet Pullen, ex Auckland, now Waikato members to bring their one ton Morris truck from Te Kauwhata. Norman and Pat Dewhurst took Daffodil, their vintage Essex, Cedric Pegrum brought his VW Beetle and Tom Brough was in his ’38 Buick (thanks to the kids now known as the “Grease Lightening car”). All together we made a pretty representative group of our Club vehicles. Simon Thompson and Tracey Winterbottom had to pull out due to other commitments.

The school roll is about 30, we spoke to them in a classroom about our vehicles and early NZ transport, had some lunch, (lovely scones and cuppa courtesy of the staff), then we all went out to the playing field for more chat before finishing their extended lunch time with rides around the field. It was a great way for the children to start Matariki Weekend. We believe each child got at least one ride in every vehicle, one little girl spent a number of journeys around the paddock in the sidecar “looking after” smaller children! ☺

School visits like this are good value for all. The children learn a bit, we hope!, the Club gets good promo (there were other adults there, teachers and parents), and our older members get valued interchange with littlies, plus a nice drive in the country.

Vehicle Identity Cards (VIC)

Did you know that you must have one of these for your vehicle to enter any National Rally? The VIC is the club’s formal system for identifying and verifying the authenticity of your vehicle and officially it’s vehicle class.

There is paperwork to be filled out and photos to be provided and then one of our VIC signatories will check things over before sending to Head Office. The process is run by volunteers, and is a serious one (our system is recognised by LTSA).

Please allow 3 months from lodging the forms to receiving your card.

Note that renewals can now be done on-line.
