VCC BOP KLAXON AUGUST 2024

CHAIRMANS CHAT

A considerable volume of stuff seems to be coming across my desk of late. There's lots of reasons for this and the fact that our branch is hosting the VCC AGM this August, followed by the Annual Fundraiser for Cancer just a fortnight later - no doubt has contributed to lots of the traffic density. What with the demands of the aforementioned plus monitoring the day-to-day housekeeping, it's important that I do try and remain organised!

On that note however - do feel free to give me a prompt should you feel that I may have overlooked something, forgotten all about the topic after just being told, and so on. As your new Chairman naturally I'm on a learning curve concerning admin and driving things VCC - but I'm not averse to any worthwhile tips and suggestions from any of you who as members have a combined skills set that covers a very big field.

Sometimes in the blur of the daily activity I receive an email, post or whatever that takes me back a bit and gives one time to reflect. Today I received one of those sort of posts.

This particular post pointed out that nine years ago we were very much involved with the celebrations concerning the opening of the Eastern Link Expressway. A good number of Veteran, Vintage and Classic Cars took part in the festivities and looking back now to that day it does form another important part in the story concerning various milestones reached with roading infrastructure in our region.

The photo attached is of Bob and Ruth Taylor driving their 1906 REO on the Eastern Link. I somehow fluked the shutter speed and light exposure with the camera all the while hanging out the passenger window of my Mum's restored Mini that Sam was driving. Sadly Bob and Ruth are no longer with us and the REO now resides a long way from here - but the car and people combo are recorded for all time here essentially 'Driving Our History'.

A DAMN FINE RUN!

We left Tauranga in brilliant sunshine only to encounter mist and low cloud at the top of the Kaimais. This weather was to last most of the day however we got to our meeting point at Robert Harris cafe in Matamata without incident. There were 28 members and 15 cars so it was a exceptional turnout considering it was winter time. We left Matamata and after a short distance we heard a loud bang from a car up front. It was from the Model A Ford driven by Joe Scott. Apparently there was a faulty fuel pump and the Ford had a huge backfire. Joe said that he would be okay and the rest carried on to Arapuni.

Then we got to the intersection of State Highway 29 and State Highway 1 where there is considerable road works for the bypass at Paieire. We waited for about 20 minutes in the queue to get out onto State Highway 1 and turn left. On arrival in Arapuni we went to the Rhubarb Cafe for lunch and Alastair Jones gave us a few details of the building and history of the Arapuni dam. We then went down to the swing Bridge and some of us walked over. I have a fear of heights so only went a few meters on to the bridge. We all dispersed after this and made our way back to Tauranga and it was still a fine day in the Bay of Plenty.

Many thanks to Alastair and Gwen for organising this enjoyable run.

PS Ron and Kerry Elton won the chocolates for the first correct answer for the Arapuni St with a car name KISSEL. They remembered seeing one at Southwards Museum.

A DAMN FINE RUN!

Red Skelton's Recipe For The Perfect Marriage!

1. Two times a week we go to a nice restaurant, have a little beverage, good food and companionship. She goes on Tuesdays, I go on Fridays.

2. We also sleep in separate beds. Hers is in California and mine is in Texas.

3. I take my wife everywhere, but she keeps finding her way back.

4. I asked my wife where she wanted to go for our anniversary. "Somewhere I haven't been in a long time!" she said. So I suggested the kitchen.

5. We always hold hands. If I let go, she shops.

6. She has an electric blender, electric toaster and electric bread maker. She said "There are too many gadgets, and no place to sit down!" So I bought her an electric chair.

7. My wife told me the car wasn't running well because there was water in the carburetor. I asked where the car was. She told me, "In the lake."

8. She got a mud pack and looked great for two days. Then the mud fell off.

9. She ran after the garbage truck, yelling, "Am I too late for the garbage?" The driver said, "No, jump in!".

10. Remember: Marriage is the number one cause of divorce.

11. I married Miss Right. I just didn't know her first name was 'Always'.

12. I haven't spoken to my wife in 18 months. I don't like to interrupt her.

13. The last fight was my fault though. My wife asked, "What's on the TV?" I said, "Dust!".

These were the good old days when humor didn't have to start with a four letter word or political. It was just clean and simple fun.

Jack, a handsome man, walked into a sports bar around 9:58 pm.

He sat down next to this blonde at the bar and stared up at the TV as the 10:00 news came on.

The news crew was covering a story of a man on a ledge of a large building preparing to jump.

The blonde looked at Jack and said, "Do you think he'll jump?"

Jack says, "You know what, I bet he will."

The blonde replied, "Well, I bet he won't."

Jack placed $30 on the bar and said, "You're on!"

Just as the blonde placed her money on the bar, the guy did a swan dive off of the building, falling to his death.

The blonde was very upset and handed her $30 to Jack, saying, "Fair's fair... Here's your money."

Jack replied, "I can't take your money, I saw this earlier on the 5 o'clock news and knew he would jump."

The blonde replies, "I did too; but I didn't think he'd do it again."

“ONE IS NEVER TO OLD TO LEARN SOMETHING NEW!”

Manure... An interesting fact. In the 16th and 17th centuries, everything for export had to be transported by ship. It was also before the invention of commercial fertilizers, so large shipments of manure were quite common. It was shipped dry, because in dry form it weighed a lot less than when wet, but once water (at sea) hit it, not only did it become heavier, but the process of fermentation began again, of which a by-product is methane gas. As the stuff was stored below decks in bundles you can see what could (and did) happen. Methane began to build up below decks and the first time someone came below at night with a lantern, BOOOOM!

Several ships were destroyed in this manner before it was determined just what was happening. After that, the bundles of manure were always stamped with the instruction ' Stow high in transit ' on them, which meant for the sailors to stow it high enough off the lower decks so that any water that came into the hold would not touch this "volatile" cargo and start the production of methane. Thus evolved the term ' S.H.I.T ' , (Stow High In Transit) ,………….

“So, it’s really not a swear word” which has come down through the centuries and is in use to this very day. You probably did not know the true history of this word. Neither did I

I had always thought it was a golfing term

VIC Application forms

PLEASENOTE:The application form for a Vehicle Identity Card has changed from a 7 page application to 15 pages. The extra pages relate to explanations regarding whether you receive a “DOMAS” or a “VIC”, depending on the state of the Vehicle at the time of the application. Go to wwww.vcc.org.nz, and in the panel on the LHS is the option “RESOURCES/ DOWNLOAD” accessing that will show “VIC Application”. Print the required pages and note the requirements for the photos.

It is suggested that you complete all the pages and then contact either Alastair Jones 07 5761124 - or - Ivan Allen 07 5432629 beforesending the photos to Nat. Office Christchurch. This is to ensure the photos are as required and don’t get there before the paperwork, which in almost all cases has to be checked against the vehicle to make sure there aren’t any errors. Either of the VIC Officers are there to assist not hinder!
