ACTING CHAIRMANS CHAT
I get a lot of interesting thoughts from “Classic World” mag. lent to me by Peter W. in which the cars are thought to be Classic approaching 10 years old. But some do fall into our requirement to be 30 years old to be Club eligible. So it was surprising to read a restoration story that needed a range of AF spanners and “Halfords” and the rest of similar UK shops were found to not stock them anymore.
About 10 years ago I happened to finish a Mini run in Taumarunui where a fellow driver decided he needed to adjust the choke tube, requiring the ½” spanner, which had mysteriously vanished from his tool-roll. Sunday morning early we toddled off to the S........P shop and found only Metric spanners. Conversation went like this, “ we need a half inch AF spanner”. “ What’s half an inch, came the response” After much prompting and patient explanations, it was obvious we would have to buy a complete Metric set to get a 13mm spanner; not B likely!!
Fast forward a few months and I decided to change the oil filter on Aussie friend’s Riley Elf and decided to take the old one into R...O to make sure the replacement was the same; all cleaned up of course. Young woman asks for the number plate details; I suggest she just searches through the ZED filter numbers which must be chronological. “Oh no, I can only find it by looking in the computer to find the location”. So, I tell her and she says “what’s a Riley Elf?” After 10 minutes of futile explanations I give up and make the trip to Te Puke to get one from the classic spares place.
And it got worse when I needed a rubber brake hose for Gwen’s Traveller. The threaded connections on each end were AF and BSF. Sensing problems I screwed compatible nuts on each end so the counter maestro could check, but when I explained how I’d made it easy for him the “youngish” chap said “I haven’t got time to stuff around swapping nuts around for vehicles that are past their use by date”. But it ended happily when I had a “lightbulb” moment and flopped it on the counter of (no free advertising here) about 20 minutes drive away, and the old fellow from about 3 desks away correctly identified it was BMC and rattled off the part number and location on their shelves.
Yes, it is getting very difficult to buy even commonplace parts locally and I look forward to hearing Garry Jackson from FOMC tell us at the November Club-Night how valuable our aging vehicles are to the economy.
Of course, there just may be salvation by coming along to the Massive Car Boot sale on 3rd November and hunting for those elusive spanners, oil filters and brake hoses. If all that fails, I suggest you should look through the shipping container adjacent to the Parts Shed and borrow/hire/buy what you need.
It’s been an enjoyable couple of months filling in for Donn.

October Mid Month Run
What a lovely sunny day for a great mid-month run, pulled out of the bag by AJ after his set run was disrupted by road closure.
Thirty-three of us including two intrepid motorcyclists met up at Wairoa Bridge for a 9.30am briefing and during the briefing a van load of aspiring young mechanics arrived to view the cars, of course we challenged them to start the cars using starter handles and much hilarity resulted.
Off we went to our first stop, morning tea at Quarry Park.
My navigator Steve Winters and myself were so engrossed following Trevor & Raewyn's newly acquired Model A Coupe that we missed the first turn, setting a precedence for the rest of the field during the run, passing each other numerous times. The look on AJs face was priceless. We travelled onto and around Omokoroa seeing the ever expanding new suburbs, finally arriving at Bill Heard's home and viewed the awesome 5 year restoration of his 1928 Morris Cowley flatnose two-seater, inherited by Bill when he was 21 from his grandfather, William Gilmour, who expanded his 1916 car painting and trimming business in 1926 to become Tauranga’s agent for Morris Oxford, Cowley cars and Morris Trucks. How great to see something that has been in the family for so long.
Off we went on the final stage to the Omokoroa water front, meeting up for lunch after again passing each other when miss reading the route.
Altogether a great day with much laughter from like minded members, many thanks to AJ and Gwen.
George Howard.
