CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

Welcome to the last month of the year, the time of goodwill to all men, women, and children. It is the festive season where we can take time out and enjoy Christmas with friends and family. Take some time for yourselves and recharge your batteries. I know I will although I know Marcia will no doubt give me a list of jobs. However, it is also time to remember the people who are not as fortunate as us, those with no family or just unable to enjoy the festive season. Try to do something nice for people who are in that position.

Last month Ian Patton and I went to the B.O.P. VCC club to listen to Gary Jackson, the President of the Federation of Motoring Clubs (FOMC). It is quite possible that a lot of our members have no idea what the FOMC is or what it does. I would encourage you to go online and check it out. As a member of the VCC you are a member of FOMC, in fact the VCC was one of the founding members. The FOMC is a voluntary organization that works hard for all the motoring enthusiasts in NZ.

Talking of motoring enthusiasts, I would like to congratulate Allan Sharp for putting on a great Veteran Rally, great weather, scenic roads, and lovely people. Marcia and I really enjoyed the day. Thanks Allan.

We now have a new Committee member; Chris Hawkings has been co-opted on as a trainee committee member. Welcome on board Chris and we hope you enjoy your experience.

There is a couple of interesting events on in January. Blue Smoke and Pedals on the 5th of January and the Gymkhana on the 19th January. These are a couple of fun events to partake in or come along and watch.

Welcome to all our new members and I hope to catch up with you at an event soon.

As this is the last magazine for this year, Marcia and I would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year.

Keep smiling and keep left Graham Pate.

of the splendid Veterans from the recent rally. Full report on pages 16 & 17.

SECRETARY’S REPORT + Club Captain

My report will be short and sweet this month. There are a few events coming up in December and January. Please write the dates on your Calendar when reading the Venture. I am looking forward to Wednesday Wander Picnic January 15th which will be two days before we find out the final test results of Bozy’s chemo.

Membership - New members received their name badges November Club Night 13th which is really good to see them coming along and meeting like-minded members. Mike Tubbs, Steve DeGroot, Mark Thompson, Bill Ashwood and Janice Evans-McLeod. Roger Levis new member came along and will have his name badge presented at Xmas club night if present. Garry Reynolds visited club on Thursday morning 14th and was presented with his badge.

Yesterday at the Swap Meet one new member Marcus Madill made himself known, thank you Marcus. VCC flags flying made it easy to find the Club site. Marcus is going to try and come along to January’s Wednesday Wander.

Looking forward to a better and brighter 2025 year.

There is no January Venture, where has the last 6 months disappeared to. We have a few committee members standing down come June 2025 AGM and it would be nice to hear from our members who would be interested in coming on our committee and helping in one way or another. I am stepping down from the Secretary position as it will be just on 5 years. I can remember Jan asking me to take on this position thinking couple of years yes, I could do this.

Merry Xmas to all our Waikato members and members who have passed during the year.

Thank you for your support during the year no matter how big or small it was.

Santa is coming really soon

Your Secretary

Heather

MOTORCYCLE REPORT

The inaugural Leg Over Tuesday (on the last Tuesday of each month) was a pleasant back road cruise, with a route sheet, of about 40km to Cafe Irresistiblue for lunch. Intended to be a combined Waikato Classic Club and VCC event. 15 bikes of a great variety and Stan, who is a motorcyclist at heart, in his 1935 Vauxhall. A young bull on the wrong side of the fence caused some excitement for some and prompted some terribull jokes. Next one will be November 26. Thanks to Andy for this initiative.

Next ride is on Sunday December 1st. The planned gravel road adventure to Port Waikato is postponed to next year as the organiser has had a better offer to ride classic bikes in Australia. We will be going to see a Royal Enfield collection and lunch in Matamata. Meet at the clubrooms at 9:30 for a cuppa and start riding at 10:00. A short ride of about 120km from the clubrooms and back.

Steve Walter

Next TUESDAY LEG OVER November 26th. (last Tues. of the month) Meet at Cafe 9 in Cambridge 10 - 10.30. Leaving at 11 ish. A slightly shorter ride this time on backroads to Pirongia for lunch. Not so many corners or livestock. We might go somewhere after lunch. No Bull!. A VCC Waikato and Waikato Classic M/C Club combined run. Andy Hammond atepushrods@gmail.com

PASSING LANE:

David Thomson 22/03186 passed away October 2024 David joined the VCC in 2002 and lived in Thames. Very involved with the Model T club. A lot of Waikato members attended David’s funeral Thursday 31st October

NATIONAL NORTH ISLAND EASTER RALLY 2025

As many of you will be aware, The Waikato Branch of VCCNZ is hosting the National North Island Easter Rally for 2025, that will be centred in Cambridge. The Rally Committee comprises of Graham and Heather Boswell, Graham and Marcia Pate, Erin Wilson, Paul Clark, Greg and Gaynor Terrill. The Route Plotters are Reece Burnett, Alan Sharp, Paul Clark, Hugh and Bronya McInally.

The programme for the rally has been finalised and the rally routes are almost complete.

The event will start with registration opening on the afternoon of Friday 18th April, followed by a short twilight run and a barbecue tea.

Saturday will begin with breakfast at the clubrooms, prior to vehicles leaving on their respective rallies. The routes to the lunch stop are suitable for the various classes of vehicles and will take you through interesting and scenic countryside. The afternoon will be a short return trip back to the clubrooms for afternoon tea. Saturday evening dinner will be an informal meal at a local club.

Sunday will start at the clubrooms with hot cross buns and tea and coffee, with a relaxed mystery event to follow. A finger food lunch will be available at the clubrooms.

The grand finale will include a sumptuous meal and entertainment held at the historic Cambridge Town Hall, with a Roaring 20s theme.

The organising committee is ensuring that this will be a relaxed, enjoyable and affordable weekend for all. The rally routes will use simple to follow written instructions; there will be no silent checks used. All VCC eligible vehicles, including veterans and motorcycles are catered for.

Entry forms will be available mid -January and entries will close mid-March.

We look forward to having many of our branch members participating and to welcoming VCC members from other branches.

How Can You Help?

The organising committee would appreciate donations of non-perishable items for a grocery hamper until the end of March.

WORKSHOP REPORT

Hi everyone.

Once again, the hoist has been in regular use on most Thursdays last month, mostly for oil changes, so some vehicles are now all set for some summer touring. Some excess tools have been sorted and past onto the parts shed and since were put on the Swap Meet table.

In between time the nuts, bolts and screws are slowly getting sorted to make it much easier to source.

I’ll be away for a few months – heading to Wheels @ Wanaka (Final) and doing some volunteering, helping with set up etc.

Don’t forget if you want to make a booking to use the hoist, just phone either:-

Graham Holmes (07) 827 7341

Andy Hammond (07) 823 5712 or 022 0415 356

Workshop Sub Committee:-

Jeremy Brook 021 152 0922

Bryan Cossey 027 410 7772

Graham Holmes 07 827 7341 (Hoist Bookings)

Stan Richardson 027 233 4461

Terry Pidduck 027 2726 319

Thursday opening hours are from 9.30am to at least 2pm or weekends by arrangement.

Also don’t forget when you are having a clean out, I’m still looking for any Memorabilia, Flags, Signs, Placards, Vehicle Posters and now illuminated signs etc.

Cossey

Roland has finished the boot lining and now attention is being directed to the hood iron supports. Bonnet side handles too have been looked for. The recent club swapmeet produced some progress in both areas, with Graeme Luxford’s stall giving up some suitable handles and our own parts shed may well have come to the party with some adaptable hood iron saddles, courtesy of Graham Pate’s keen eyes. Graham also arranged for the spare wheel carrier parts to be sand blasted and primed, so a round of thanks to our Graeme/ Grahams this month.

A loose button in the seat upholstery has now been corrected – it’s quite surprising how much time and effort sometimes has to go into a little job like this. Fully buttoned upholstery is quite appropriate for a vehicle of this era.

While looking for a replacement wheel tapered roller bearing cup in our parts shed, it became clear just how much stuff is stored there, so hats off to the guys who manage to look after all this stock. Only a worn (and unusable) correct cup found this time, but a lot of bearing stock to sort through all the same. Shame that so much gets damaged by being constantly, but carelessly, picked over.

Garry is still beavering away on the fuel pump rebuild job, even when at home. It is, however, unfortunate that Manny suffered an accident to his wrist on another project, so work is held up on the rear panel he is fabricating until he recovers. We really hope that this will be soon Manny.

Work sessions are on the workshop open days on Thursday mornings, from 9.30am onward and morning tea is always put on, so no excuse really, especially if you are retired, for not becoming involved to help, learn or socialise. Bob Hayton

A BIG WELCOME TO OUR NEW MEMBERS

We hope that you will enjoy the club and it’s many activities

If you have any queries either big or small please do not hesitate to contact any member of the committee and they will be more than willing to assist you in any way possible.

CLUB NIGHTS 2025

VETERAN RALLY 2024

Fine weather and serene countryside of the south-western Waikato region played host to the Club’s Veteran Car Rally. Starting from the home of Chris and Shirley Hawkings on O'Regan Road, participants travelled through surrounding countryside, showcasing veteran motoring whilst celebrating the region's rich farming heritage and stunning scenery.

Sixteen veteran and vintage cars participated in the rally, each with its own story and charm. There were several “stars of the show” including the 1904 Darracq, driven by the father-son duo David and Ben Porter from Auckland. This vehicle (the oldest on the rally) and crew combo were awarded the one/two cylinder cup for completion of the tour. Alongside them in this class was Graham McKenzie in his 1905 Cadillac.

Among the other standout vehicles was a stunning 1913 Mitchell five-seater tourer driven to and from the event from the Franklin area by Phil Henley. Several Model T Fords, the beloved workhorses of early motoring, joined also by a 1908 Jackson, Dodge, Fiat, Singer and 1911 Calthorpe, bringing a sense of nostalgia and a reminder of the ingenuity that revolutionized transportation over 100 years ago.

After the rally got underway from the Hawkings' home, the convoy made its way along quiet, off-the-beaten-rural roads, taking the long route to Pirongia. The rally route arranged by Allan Sharp offered participants a chance to experience the area’s rural beauty while ensuring the veteran motoring without having to worry about fast modern traffic and the concerns that come with that.

First major stop was in Pirongia for lunch. Participants gathered at the Pirongia Township Domain providing an opportunity for the public to view these fine machines. Some 50 miles from the start point, Pirongia’s domain offered the perfect spot to relax and to compare notes before the journey continued.

After lunch the return trip, approximately 20 miles took the group through the shorter route back to O’Regan Rd via the home of Steve Hunter to view his miniature train set and network around his property. Rally participants were delighted by the intricate detail of a miniature rail system with several taking advantage of a train ride. Part of Steve’s set up was a small rail jigger which the children found very easy to drive/ride.

The rally made its way back to O'Regan Road for a well-deserved afternoon tea including strawberries and ice cream, the first for me this season! With several prizes handed out the First Waikato Cup was awarded to Chris Lawrence and son Leon Lawrence for their 1913 Model T Ford.

Many thanks to Allan for arranging the day’s events, also Chris and Shirley for providing a starting venue and Tom Andrews and Hamilton Classics Museum for acting as tail-end-Charlie for this event. The Veteran rally is really a great event where members showcase the Club’s oldest vehicles. I strongly recommend members support this event; these vehicles formed the basis of the club’s original reason for being. Thanks to the organisers and participants for bringing these vehicles out.

WVVCC/WVTCC SWAP MEET 2024

Awesome day for the Waikato Vintage Car Club and Waikato Vintage Tractor Car Club. Day started at 5.30am bit chilly with the wind picking up making it very cold on the driveway collecting entry fee. Most sellers were all set up and ready by 9am. The flow of the traffic into Gate 2 worked well with public and buyers entering in through Gate 3. The last 2 years the Swap meet had rain which was so disappointing for all who put a lot of time and effort in from both clubs.

Les opened up the Parts Shed at the Clubrooms and Marcia and Erin made cuppas for anyone that turned up after being at the Swap Meet.

Both clubs will be very happy with the overall turn out being the both clubs major fundraising for the year. Fingers crossed.

Huge thankyou to all the volunteers who helped out, once again without the help these events can not proceed. Jeremy and his committee thank you. Jeremy even celebrated his birthday, Hugh made a birthday cake and Jeremy had Happy Birthday sung to him.

CLUB NIGHT: 13TH NOV—ST JOHNS

A huge thank you to Peter Spiller for arranging Henry Strong from St Johns to come and demonstrate how to and when to use the defibrillator in an emergency. It was very interesting, I am sure everyone won’t be too scared to administer CPR. What you must do first is pinch the patient and see if there is any movement. Listen for any breathing, tilt their chin up then start CPR. Place hand in the middle of the chest between the armpits, place your other hand across first hand then proceed CPR. Do not be afraid of breaking any ribs. A broken rib is far better to have than a patient losing their life.

CLUB POWER: CONNECTING MEMBERS

Hello Heather,

I have just noted in latest Venture that new member Michael Overington is looking out for a pre 1930s car to restore. I would be very pleased to help him!

Help would be to supply 1928 Morris Cowley 14/28 in basically complete and ‘original’ condition but needing restoration, the most obvious work being new roof, front door pillars and interior renewal. Mechanical work mostly TLC but engine needs investigation. The car last ran in 1972/73 but camshaft timing gear disintegrated when coming off motorway at Runciman and car in storage since then. I have owned the car since 1997 – a mate for our 1928 Morris Oxford Saloon de Luxe. Both cars were built at Cowley in UK, September 1928 and first on road in NZ January 1929. The Cowley is mechanically the same as the Oxford but 8 inches wider in wheel track – aimed at being more suitable for Colonial conditions! In this case the car came to NZ as a functional chassis and was bodied in Wellington by Munt Cottrell Nielsen (subsequently NZ Motor Bodies Ltd. till 1983).

Cowley has been used in wider Waikato area for all its running life. I have reasonably complete history including ownership details – car was at Karangahake (Paeroa) with first owner till 1956. Registration is on hold (BS 5415). At coming 84 years young our 1928 and 1965 Morris Oxfords are now enough to keep up with!

My first car, in 1958, was a 1926 Morris Cowley and now with 27 years experience with the 28 Oxford I am well qualified to help and advise! Also plenty of spare parts known and available. I will be pleased if you can connect me with Michael so we can talk if he is interested. Thanks for your help, Trevor Skilton.

Result! Hello Trevor and Kay, branch committee would like to thank you both for the kind donation of your 1928 Morris Cowley. I have phoned and spoken with Mike Overington who is over the moon with this opportunity to restore this car. Mike said he had been to your home and spent quite a few hours going through parts and being shown different cars etc. Mike will keep the branch updated. Heather.

OFF ROAD & FOUR WHEEL DRIVE

During our recent travels around the world, we were able to catch a few locations of motoring interest. One of the most unexpected was the Off-Road History Museum in Sharjah (one of the United Arab Emirates), located next to Dubai. This interesting museum is out in the desert and just an hour’s drive away from the city. We were the only people there and being ‘over sixties’ were admitted free of charge on production of proof!

A huge set of buildings houses a vast collection of four-wheel drive vehicles of all descriptions, both standard, slightly or highly modified and produced around the world throughout the last hundred years and more. The museum is divided into several sections, including historical, commercial, military and modified, representing the collection of Sheikh Hamad bin Hamdan Al Nahyan.

Several examples of an early exponent of fwd on display were the trucks produced by the Badger Four Wheel Drive Auto Company formed in 1906 in Clintonville, Wisconsin. Their first design, the ‘Battleship’ was a car produced in 1909, followed by a truck design introduced in 1912. By 1916 The US Army was a customer with 147 trucks on order for use in the Pancho Vila expedition. By WW1’s end in 1918 the order book for the US Army had increased to 15,000 FWD Model B three-ton trucks, with 14,000 units actually delivered. Additional orders came from the United Kingdom and Russia.

There were several examples of these FWD civil and military versions on display in amongst the hundreds of exhibits, all with descriptive panels giving limited details on each in both English and Arabic. Their patented full time fourwheel drive system combined a lockable centre differential with double-Y constant velocity universal joints for steering. In modern terms this would be considered as all-wheel drive, as all FWD Co. products featured full-time four wheel drive with a lockable centre differential.

Kept in dust-free and sometimes air-conditioned locations, the vast collection takes some time to walk around. They suggest you start with the ‘modified’ section which seems to represent something of a local fetish for exhibitionism – every exhibit being more outlandishly modified than the one before. On from there, you can linger over the heavies or the fire trucks, the Land Rover or Jeep collections. You may prefer the Austin Gypsies or the Hummer range, perhaps even Dodge or Ford, Mercedes or Renault’s off-road offerings; they are all there in nice order and shown with obvious enthusiasm.

If you are a vintage trucking or off-road enthusiast and have a Dubai stopover sometime, consider getting out to this collection – I’m sure that you won’t be disappointed, but take some water with you and don’t rely on their café being open.
