ACTING CHAIRMANS CHAT

I’m not sure whether I’m regurgitated , reactivated, or just reawakened!

Anyway, it’s good to have to focus on what the Club is doing or needs to do to meet the needs of a changing Membership. It was a wake-up call to lose 3 Members in a very short space of time and made me think about my own mortality. Doing a house-shift over the last month has occupied every waking moment in trying to work out what is needed in the new place and how to summon up the courage to get rid of stuff that has been kept for years in case it was needed one day. I have come to the conclusion you keep stuff because it is connected to memories, and really, how often do you unpack old photos and look at them. Maybe that’s what people are doing these days in public places scrolling on their phones.

Enough navel gazing on possibly what some may think are less positive thoughts, and let’s move on to heart-warming matters. I have always considered closer connections with other Branch’s activities, and also other likeminded Clubs is the way to go and I’m delighted the Mustang Club has joined in with us and their efforts should be supported. Way to go!

Lastly, I have been following trends in car ownership that are resulting in just about everybody moving into newer vehicles because they feel finding a mechanic to do maintenance is nigh on impossible. Despite pleas to the Club-Night audience to offer useful contacts, nothing has surfaced. If this resonates with you and you have found a “spannerhand” who likes working on old cars, let us know. Thank you for any info.

However, I’m delighted to let you know that a husband and wife team who have been motoring in a 60’s-70’s sort of vehicle and having been looking on from the sidelines at Vintage events, have decided to get involved in “grassroots” motoring. I have been permitted to have close-up look at their acquisition and was most envious, and couldn’t help imagining getting behind the steering wheel and enjoying the feel that only a well driven Vintage vehicle evokes.

In days gone by, there was no better way to enjoy life than to drive on back country roads in a Vintage vehicle with a few others, coming across a rural hostelry, having a celebratory drink, and then handing over the driving to the co-pilot and resting ones head on the folded hood, and with eyes closed, listening to the exhaust note that only a Vintage vehicle can produce.

I’m sure the new Vintage enthusiasts are the sort of folk who will enjoy similar emotions, and more will be revealed next Club-night.

On that note I will resume “downsizing” and dreaming of the good old days.

Yours dreamily, Alastair Jones

Birthday Celebration

On Saturday 14 September several members of our Club were invited to join the family of one of our older BOP VCC stalwarts to celebrate her 80th birthday. Margaret Goldsmith celebrated her birthday at the Oak Tree Restaurant with an enjoyable occasion.

Margaret was widowed in December last year when well-known VCC member, and Margaret’s dear husband Owen, passed away. It is just wonderful to know that Margaret is continuing to stay involved in the branch activities and helping in the kitchen on club nights.

It is sad when one partner passes on and the one left doesn’t always feel comfortable in coming along to events on their own. It is great that you make the effort Margaret, we all enjoy seeing your happy smiling face. Happy belated birthday young lady.

A visit to the Packard museum

In August Christine and I visited Whangarei, and I took the opportunity to visit the Packard Museum, located in Maungatapere, just outside Whangarei, on the Dargaville road.

And it is not simply Packard cars that they have it is a very large and diverse range of vehicles in five different sheds on the site.

The list below explains the large range of items/categories!

Thislandauismyideaofa classicPackard!

There is plenty to interest anyone interested in vehicles of all type and origin, in heavy machinery, in

Military items, and lots of memorabilia!

I spent three hours there, and recommend a visit to all Klaxon readers.

Their hours are limited, so ensure that you check their website https://packardmuseum.co.nz/

September Mid-Month Run Report—

On a beautiful sunny Spring day, 35 members met at the clubrooms and received their route instruction / quiz sheets. The Mid-Month ‘Urban Sprawl Run’, organized by George and Lynn Howard, was an excellent ramble through Tauranga, Papamoa and Te Puke.

Morning tea was enjoyed by all adjacent to the Papamoa Surf Club. Then onwards, exploring the ever expanding Papamoa, that seems to be stretching ever closer to Whakatane !!

On to Te Puke and through the suburbs and the beautiful inland countryside, before stopping for lunch at the Daily Café a workplace where all profits are donated to Te Puke charities.

Coming down the pothole ravaged No 1 Road my Model A developed yet another raffle in the back. Stopping to check, I looked up to see many others have stopped fore and aft to help. All was well and long live the support and comradery of our fellow club members, always willing to stop and help.

The quiz enroute kept everybody on their toes, and at lunchtime George and Lynn distributed treats to all those who’d completed the quiz correctly. And I suspect, to anyone else who had tried.

An excellent run and our thanks to George and Lynn for their organization and accurate route instructions. We were guided through areas most of us have never seen before and, to my knowledge, not one of the 35 lost their way.

Members car seeking a good home!

VCC Member Grant Secker has asked us to circulate his offer. If you are interested, please contact Grant directly on his email at: skybeast330@hotmail.com

My name is Grant and i have a 1975 Nissan Datsun that I've had for just about as long as i can remember!

It was my intention to refurbish it after I stopped using it years ago. But life has taken a different course i have grown older and my interest has waned.

I would like my beloved old car to go to someone interested in working with it rather than it going to the dismantlers or the car crusher.

Is there anyone who might like it?

VIC Application forms

PLEASENOTE:The application form for a Vehicle Identity Card has changed from a 7 page application to 15 pages. The extra pages relate to explanations regarding whether you receive a “DOMAS” or a “VIC”, depending on the state of the Vehicle at the time of the application. Go to wwww.vcc.org.nz, and in the panel on the LHS is the option “RESOURCES/ DOWNLOAD” accessing that will show “VIC Application”. Print the required pages and note the requirements for the photos.

It is suggested that you complete all the pages and then contact either RON ELTON - 07 5799621 or GEORGE HOWARD 020 40427624 beforesending the photos to Nat. Office Christchurch. This is to ensure the photos are as required and don’t get there before the paperwork, which in almost all cases has to be checked against the vehicle to make sure there aren’t any errors. Either of the VIC Officers are there to assist not hinder!

Similar elements exist in New Zealand!

Oxford University researchers have discovered the densest element yet known to science.

The new element, Governmentium (symbol=Gv), has one neutron, 25 assistant neutrons, 88 deputy neutrons and 198 assistant deputy neutrons, giving it an atomic mass of 312. These 312 particles are held together by forces called morons, which are surrounded by vast quantities of lepton-like particles called pillocks.

Since Governmentium has no electrons, it is inert. However, it can be detected, because it impedes every reaction with which it comes into contact. A tiny amount of Governmentium can cause a reaction that would normally take less than a second, to take from 4 days to 4 years to complete.

Governmentium has a normal half-life of 2 to 6 years. (In NZ 3 years)

It does not decay, but instead undergoes a reorganisation in which a portion of the assistant neutrons and deputy neutrons exchange places.

In fact, Governmentium's mass will actually increase over time, since each reorganisation will cause more morons to become neutrons, forming isodopes.

This characteristic of moron promotion leads some scientists to believe that Governmentium is formed whenever morons reach a critical concentration. This hypothetical quantity is referred to as a critical morass.

When catalysed with money, Governmentium becomes Administratium (symbol=Ad), an element that radiates just as much energy as Governmentium, since it has half as many pillocks but twice as many morons.
