Chairman’s Report

Well that was relatively easy! Month one back in the “chair” ticked off. The only negative for the month was the Saturday of Winter Deco and the weather resulting in the cancellation of the Car Display and Car Rides. This was compensated however on the Sunday when the weather gods looked down upon us with rays of sunshine, allowing us to assemble in the centre of Napier (whoops! Who said parking was an issue in town!!) and thanks to the efforts of Esther we started with a “walking tour” picking out various landmarks, before embarking on a run over the hill and around part of suburbia ending up back at the Clubrooms for a PoshAfternoonTea.

It was a good turnout, and great to have a group from the “Aston MartinClub”withustogetherwithvisitorsfromGisborne.Wehope youenjoyedtheafternoon.

In regards to the operation of the club, the new committee has hit the ground running and over the next month or so should have programmes in place for the remainder of the year to ensure things run smoothly. Some operational issues that we are having toaddressareaddressedasfollows.

Chairman’s Report

Building Access

As part of this programme, we are having the usual “shuffle” of keys for the incoming new committee members and resetting of passcodes for access to the building. This is particularly important this year as our alarm monitoring system has switched to another provider, with the resulting audit of keys and codes and revised functionality of the system to enhance theabilitytomonitoraccesstothepremises.

It is therefore timely to advise / remind members that authorised keyholders are limited to the current committee members plus the designated Spares Manager and Assistant, Groundsman, Custodian, Librarian, Wednesday Run CoOrdinator plus an “emergency” key holder for after hours security.

Anyone holding a “key” outside this group must return it to either the Custodian or Chairman, (or advise if lost/misplaced). Please be aware that alarm codes for “non-authorised” key holdersarebeingdisabled!

Chairman’s Report

Cash Handling

Although a relatively minor part of our operation (sadly) it has been drawn to our attention through the “review /audit” process of our annual accounts that we need to be somewhat “tidier” in the handling of cash! Accordingly, any cash received needs to be recorded. (Mix & Mingle & social activities via the attendance register, spares via the “cash” book). This will give us the ability to “review” and confirm cash movements as and when required. Use of the eftpos machine provides us with sufficient records at this pointinanduseofitshouldbeencouragedwherepractical.

As part of these slight “procedural” changes, access to the “till” within spares is also required to be “restricted” and accordingly future access will only be available to the Manager & Assistant. Again this is driven by the Reviewers comments, and certainly not a reflection on those who provide much appreciated support in thoseareas.

Upcoming Events

Moving forward, the biggies for the second half of the year are Cambridge Safari for the weekend 18th -21st October. At the time of writing, we have a few spots available for what promises to be a great weekend of Vintage & Classic motoring, so if you're interestedcontacteithermyselforMalcom&LesleyBlair. The 65th Anniversary of the Branch is being held 22nd to 24th November. A real milestone for the club and details will be out shortly.

Sothat'sitfromme.

HBVCC - June Mid-Week Run

We moved our start position to Roys Hill for this run so as to allow us the time to enjoy what Mike and Eleanor Green had preparedforusandwethankthemforatrulysplendidday.

Leaving the start the instructions were simple, we were headed down SH50 to Salisbury Rd and from there to the Kereru Rd and on to the Gwavas Rd. We stopped briefly just to make sure all were still behind us but also to allow a look at the vast valleys ofthisarea.

Ourdestinationwasatthe “ForestRoadFarm-NZRedDeer“ andItwasatthefarmthatMikewas waitingtogreetuswiththeowner GrantCharteris.

About Forest Road Farm

Our family have been farming Red Deer in Tikokino, Central Hawkes Bay for over 40 years. My late father Bruce started farming Deer in the late 70’s early 1980’s, this started from a passion of hunting them and a desire to farm something different.

Bruce always concentrated on using Big bodied Red Deer with clean velvet and quiet temperament. When I came home to run the farm in the early 2000’s, this provided a great base to drive mydesiretofocusonHeavybeamedtidyVelvetGenetics.

After meeting my wife Sally in 2007, we purchased the farm from Dad in 2009 and were married in 2010. In 2013 we lost Bruce in a tragic farming accident. We now have two beautiful children, Harry 7 and Lottie 6. After losing my father, it has created a real drive and passion to take what we have and really push things to the next level with what we do on and off thefarm!

Grant then explained how the operations of deer farming at this placewerecarriedoutandtothatendIwonteventrytoexplain best leave that to what is on the web site: https://forestroadfarm.co.nz/about.html

In brief it’s the velvet that is the prize this for example took only 60 days to grow to this size and is then cut off leaving a butt which will produce another velvet antler and the 2nd one usuallyisabletotheworksbringabetterprice.

Its all about breeding the best stock this is carried out in a scientific way rather than the Stag having his way and if you fail pregency, astheseHindshavethenitsofftotheworks.

The man’s shed is like a trophy room with prized antlers along the walls and is the place where auctions are held and viral around the world to the bidders. Have a feeling that this place just might be a social venue given the sofa, beer fridge, wallheatersandTV. The opportunity to visit this farm and hear what Grant, “Silver Farms Farmer of the Year” had to say about how he operateswasincredible.

Following an introduction to modern scientific farming it was off to Sawyers Arms for lunch and rowdy conversation along withabeverageortwotocompleteanotherwonderfulday.

HBVCC - July Mid-Week Run

This run was organised by Diane and Phil Friis and we thank themforgivingtheturnoutsomethingalittledifferent.

Made up of two parts, first was to follow the instructions, out Via Clive, over Tuki Tuki Rd through Havelock and finish at CornwallPark.

At this point Diane proceeded to explain the next challenge which read “In the Osmanthus garden you will need to find fifteen items of di erent colours or descriptions. These can be organic or non –organic. When you find one take a photo of it, during lunch we will compare all the photos to a set of referencephotoswehave”

What we were looking for were as an example; Green & Orange, Bright Red, Grey, Prickly, Black, Variegated and so on all 15 of them.

It was a lovely sunny day with a little chilly wind but we all headed of in di erent directions, nothing unusual in that, doing our best to find what was as per the list and to match whatDianneandPhilhadalreadyphotographed.

TheReditemwasinfactthis drinkingfountainandthePrickly thingwasthisHollytree

And the black was a steel gate. All very interesting as we had noideaofwhatitwas that we were looking for, quiteuniquereally.

After that it was off to the Friis home in school Road for lunchwiththesuntowarmusup.

Now all fed time for the answers Phill displayed the photos in question order status. Comments as one would expect; your colour is different to mine, is that pink? Where was the Holey one?Andsoon.

The winning team were Barb and Jim Speers assisted by their closefriendAngelaMacFarlanewithelevencorrect.

Large chocolate Fish were handed out to the wining team, all othercontestantswereawardedasweetfromthebasket.

Next month Kevin and Pauline McGrath will be our Wednesday run guides therefore something different, interesting and perhaps challenging, may be on offer with thatletsgetalongandsupportthemaswealwaysdo.

In the following months we have Jim and Barb Speers doing the run for September so that will be fun and one not to be missed.

Then in October John Cocking and Lee Anne Freeman will be in charge, this is always a good day out therefore turn up to enjoywhattheywillthrowatus.

Finally just to let you know that we will be overseas in SeptemberandnotbacktillaftertheOctobermid-week.

DuringthattimeKevinMcGrathwillbelookingafterthingsfor you and we thank Kevin for stepping in and knowing how he operates, thingswillbewellcaredfor.

The November mid-week I will do which only leaves us with what we should do in December and suggest we follow last year’s example and finish at a nice café as our annual Christmasmid-week.

An Austin Healey auto-autobiography

Alastair Chalmers

Hastings Hawkes Bay 2021

Part 5

As I was required to be a member of the UK Austin Healey Club to enter the AHC race championship I attended their Northern Centre monthly meetings and for my sins ended up on the committee as the competition secretary, fairly fitting position I suppose. The centre director was called Dave Haslam, a somewhat sardonic looking guy with a very dry sense of humour, who I got to know quite well. I had the problem that although I had a Healey it was not a road going example and could not be used to join in any of the social runs and fun events that the club organised, I used to turn up in my Audi 100 Avant tow car with my tool box in the back and act as tail end Charlie fixing any that had problems on these events, I needed to get a road going Healey to really join in. In a conversation with Dave he mentioned that he thought that his business partner wanted Dave to buy him out so he was going to have to sell his 1965 BJ8 MkIII to fund it. The car had returned from the States in 1988 having been repainted and had a new hood fitted, it was converted to right hand drive but when Dave got it back with its new dash panels the dashboard top was badly cracked from sun damage and the interior was well worn so the car was re-trimmed in black leather as original with carpets and door cards also replaced. I knew that Dave did not really want to part with it and as I would see him on a regular basis what I didn’t want was for him to continually be saying “I wish I’d never sold you that car”. I told him I was interested in buying it and to go away and work out the price he wanted, there would be no haggling, it would either be yes or no and if it was yes then I would give him 7 days to change his mind.

Davegavemeapricethatwasacceptableandhedidn’tchange his mind so on the 22nd April 1993 I became the proud owner of UCA42D,aColoradored(itwasactuallymorepinkthanred)BJ8 MkIII, it looked like Colorado red when it was parked on its own but in a line of other cars it stood out like a sore thumb, at least peopleknewwhichonewasmine.Icouldnowreallyjoininwith therestoftheclubactivities.

At last I now owned one of those big red beasties that had sucked me into motorsport although UCA was only a road going car and has stayed that way during my almost 30 years of ownership. I didn’t want and couldn’t afford to prepare a big Healey for racing as the classic car movement had become big business by then and competition prepared cars were selling for some very large sums with the costs of the parts matching this rise, much better to keep it as near standard as possible and use it for classic tour events. This led to a conflict of interests as the competing came first which meant that usually weekends were taken up in the summer months with either racing, rallying or going away to our retreat in the Lake District but as that meant the whole family we didn’t all fit into the Healey 3000 which got left behind in the shed much to my dismay.

By late 1994 all the changes to the Sprites had been made and I was invited to go to the Isle of Man for their Manx Classic meeting on the 22nd to the 25th September not knowing that one of the changes we had made would be a very retrograde step in our otherwise great reliability record, we had to revert to the older 11 stud head from the 13 stud 12G295 heads we had been using since the cars were built and this caused all sorts of problems with water leaks and head gasket failures making it rather embarrassing for me with the sponsors who had invited me to represent the team, every time I went past it looked like theManxSteamRailwaywascomingthrough.

I seem to remember spending most of the weekend taking the head off, changing the head gasket and re-assembling it at least 3 times until I ran out of spares gaskets. As we were now almost at the end of the 1994 season I was wondering what the next year would bring, were we in for a big surprise!!!

At the end of 1994 a Dutch bulb grower called Pieter Bakker who was very in to racing his Austin Healey Sprite, put together a European race Series called Spridget Racing for 1995 and as the majority of the Sprites and MG Midgets being raced were UK based his plans were to entice cars from the UK to compete by offering a package that was very hard to resist. Five rounds at premier European race circuits as part of some prestigious meetings, subsidised ferry travel due to his shipping contracts for product being sold to the UK, full food and beverage hospitality commencing from when his catering trucks arrived to when we left the circuits after racing on the Sunday. Unfortunately, it did mean that sometimes the Sunday races meant the pit crew did not function too well after some long sessions on Saturday evening, it was a help yourself, 24 hour bar – enough said.

1995 was a pretty wild year between AH club races, HSCC races and now at least 5 European rounds which meant leaving Manchester on Thursday evening for a 5 hour drive to Dover for a late crossing to France, get some sleep in the port car park and then off to whichever circuit we were playing at that weekend. Three of the Spridget rounds were at Zandvoort which was Pieter’s home circuit in May, August and September, and the others were at Spa in June and Assen in July, at the end of the series I had amassed enough class wins for outright victory, a fantastic result.

1996 was a repeat of 1995 but I left out the few HSCC rounds I had managed to do in 95 and did the AH club rounds but concentrated on the Spridget series which was just too good an opportunity to miss, again with great results in both series but by now the field of 1000cc cars in the AH series was frequently only me as Graham and John were sidelined with other things. At the end of 1996 I went to watch the UK round of the World Rally Championship and the sight and sound of rally cars at full noise going through forests was too much to resist. I was deaf to the sound of the alarm bells ringing in my head and blind to the big red flashing warning lights right in front of my eyes that it was 11 years since I had done forest special stage rallies, I sold the Sprite and bought a Peugeot 306 fully prepared car to enter the Peugeot Challenge in the British Trial and Rally Drivers Association (BTRDA) national championship in 1997. Stupidity or bravado, I’ll let you decide as this unfolds.

Some of you may have done some circuit racing and perhaps some of you have done special stage rallies and I’m guessing that everyone else’s interest in cars means that you have at least watched either or both disciplines live or the edited and abbreviated coverage shown on tv.

What may not be immediately obvious is that organised, competitive racing and rallying are 2 very different disciplines, with racing you can load your car at home, drive to a race circuit on your own, obviously it’s good to have a couple of mates along but it’s not a necessity, with everything you need for the meeting, unload the car, go through documentation then out onto the track, learn where the corners are and the fastest way through them, the track is consistent and the corners are the same each time round.

Qualify as fast as you can for grid position and then do the race with the 15 to 60 other hooligans out there with you, finish the race, hopefully with a decent result and no damage, load it up and drive home, eezy peezy, a good days skids with everything under control. Rallying is much more involved before you even turn a wheel, the level of car preparation is higher due to the more damaging nature of the roads used and once on the event there is no prior practice, you see the corners generally once, the surfaces are inconsistent and the scenery can be very unforgiving, it’s between you and your co-driver versus the clock and conditions.
