CHAIRMAN’S REPORT//
By Esther SmithThe Branch activities continue apace, I find that the first two weeks of the month are really busy for me as Chairman what with the Committee meeting and then our monthly Club night after that I thought I might have a couple of quieter weeks, but that’s not the case there is such a lot happening.
First up and most importantly is the branch AGM on Wednesday the 14th of June. One of the items to discuss is a motion to increase our Branch levy by $10 due to our operational costs far exceeding revenue. Also on that evening we will have the National Selection Committee for the next Vero International Festival of Motoring present, the Committee consists of our national VCC president Diane Quarrie, North Island Club Captain Kaaren Smylie and our incoming National President George Kear. So please we really need your support to ensure Hawke’s Bay is the location selected, HB have never hosted one of these festival events and while I feel there is a lot of support nationally for us to do so we do have to put our best foot forward and prove we can do it. There is a sub-committee of myself, Paul Anderson, Larry Morgan, Ian Elmsly and Malcolm Blair who will meet with the selection committee during the two days they are here to show the possible headquarters venue the Pettigrew Green Arena, the motoring opportunities around the district, discuss accommodation options plus meet with local body representatives regarding support from them for the event.
The Branch Committee is looking for new members to replace those who are moving on, just a reminder that all committee positions can be contested, we welcome new ideas and different perspectives so here’s your opportunity to be part of running the club. With the number of members in the branch sometimes we don’t always get to know of potential candidates, so if you are interested don’t hold back please give me a call to discuss or the nomination form is in the MAG and there are copies in the Library so put your name down, collar a seconder and submit the form to our branch Secretary
Art Deco- The entry form for our Winter Art Deco event has been emailed out to all branch members and to those on our Art Deco email list. We have already had registrations rolling in, so if you are planning to attend please submit yours. It’s all a bit of an unknown as to what the response will be so an early indication of numbers will assist our planning. The Art Deco Trusts Winter Deco program also has a number of interesting events worth investigating.
Just a reminder to please keep in touch and continue to offer support to those affected by the Cyclone, it is already evident that needs are changing with the passing of each phase from recovery through to re-establishment where ever and whatever that is and you never know when a helping hand or a listening ear might be required.
I look forward to catching up with you all and seeing you out and about participating in the Branch events.
CLUB CAPTAINS REPORT//
By Paul AndersonOld time Ongaonga Run – the weather on Saturday night prior to the run was atrocious and again I found myself wondering what I had done to upset the weather gods. I thought most would change their mind about attending when they heard the heavy rain on the roof, but Janine said most would be soundly tucked up in bed and wouldn’t hear the rain. She also said that the forecast for Sunday was good. She was right on both counts, because Sunday dawned fine and there was an excellent turnout of some thirty cars. Mike and Elanor Green joined us from Waipawa and there were two cars having their first outing at a club event – Steve Trott’s “Burnt Orange” Chevrolet Impala and Craig Manning’s “Canary Yellow” Morris Pick-up (No sombre colours here). We travelled to Ongaonga on secondary roads and on arrival had a look around the Museum before having a picnic lunch in the grounds. We then moved 200 metres up the Street to the old Coles Furniture Factory run by the Local Heritage Trust. The oral history, video presentation and photos around the walls were very interesting.
Following that visit we crossed the road to visit Mr Ian Franklin who is in the process of restoring an early Riley and also had a couple of other interesting cars and projects on the go. Finally, we visited Stuart and Janice Jones out in the country and had a look at their collection of Massey Fergusson and Ford tractors.
April Club Meeting - Richard Anderson brought along his recently purchased Bryham Formula 4 single seater race car and gave a very interesting presentation on the car’s pedigree and technical specification. After looking at the car, I found that there would be no point in my owning such a vehicle as with my ample bulk, I simply would not fit in the cockpit.
Acquisitions and Sales – Richard Comrie (Austin A 35 owner) has recently purchased a very nice red 1966 MGB Roadster out of Auckland and we look forward to seeing it out on a run. Helen Ball has sold “Vinnie”, her much loved 1951 Vauxhall LIP Velox into the collection of a NZVCC member in Amberly, Christchurch. Happy motoring

HAWKES BAY VCC AGM
WEDNESDAY 14TH JUNE 2023
TO ALL MEMBERS
It’s important that members attend this meeting if possible as one of the items to discuss is a motion to increase our Branch levy by $10 due to our operational costs far exceeding revenue. This will be apparent when you see the Branch Accounts and will be fully explained at the Meeting.
Plus election of committee members – if you are able to help out by becoming a committee member please put your name forward. By introducing new ideas especially from newer members to help the club continue to be an even better place for our members to enjoy and hopefully bring new people in.
VERO INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF MOTORING
Also on that evening we will have the National Selection Committee for the next Vero International Festival of Motoring present. The National Selection Committee consists of National VCC President Diane Quarrie, North Island Club Captain Kaaren Smylie and our next incoming National President George Kear.
So please come along, we need your support to ensure Hawke's Bay is the location selected, HB have never hosted one of these festival events, so we do have to put our best foot forward and prove we can do it. What a boost to our region the hosting of such an event would be, with many visitors from all over New Zealand and overseas attending.

SPARES NEWS//
By John Durry Hi All,So last month was all go at the spares department, getting ready for the swap meet on the 7th, so we emptied the scrap bin ready for the swap meet, & received $160 so thank you all that had added to the bin.
On a Saturday morning prior to the swap meet we spent some hours loading B.T. trailer with what we thought would go so we can make a 6.30 start on the Sunday morning. Sunday was fine and we setup with our trailer for it all to happen. I must say I had my doubts as we only had 18 cars in the first hour turn up, but from there on it turned out okay, and we did $530 worth of sales. At mid day we moved back to the club rooms where we had a few more sales and it ended up with a total of $1,100 for the day. We had one seller who didn’t want to take his unsold items home, so Rod McKenzie ended up filling up our scrap bin, just as well he had emptied it. We also had some people return the next Tuesday to carry on looking for treasures, and we made some sales, hopefully they will become members.
Looking forward to next years swap meet.
