FromtheAprilRongoteacarshowwhichsomeofourmemberssupported,the RongoteaLionswereabletodonateapproximately$10,000.00totheHospice. Thankyoutothememberswhotooktheirvintagevehiclesalonganddisplayedthem atthisevent.

SeveralcarsfromourbranchattendedtheJuliaWallaceretirementvillage/homeatthe endofApril.Withthecarsparkedupintheretirementvillagegroundstwoorthree dozenresidentstooktimeouttowanderamongthecarswhileourmembersenjoyed anafternoonteaprovidedbyJuliaWallace. Thankyoutothememberswhogaveanhourandahalfoftheirtimeforthis.

AsyoumaybeawareIhavetakentheChairperson’srole. IwishtothankDerekforhis3yearsaschairman. Wehave over ofthelastfewyearshadanincreaseinmembership,as wellasmorenationalralliesheldatourbranch. Iwishtothank GlynClementsforallhishardworkontheRalliesandcarruns overthelast3years.

IwouldliketothankDerekforthegreatjobhedidorganizing theHighlandFling.Therewere106carsfrom28branches aroundthecountry.Everyonethatcametotheclubroomsforlunchreallyenjoyedthe rally.Itwasgreattoheargoodcommentsabouttheroute,sceneryandorganization. Forthosepeoplethatdon’tknowme,IhavebeenintheclubwithmyhusbandDave forover40years.Ihavebeenonthecommitteeasclubcaptain,viceclubcaptainand committeemember.OverthoseyearsDaveandIdidalotofcarralliesaroundNew Zealandineitherthe1929DADodgeor1947Plymouthcars.

Iwouldreallyliketoencouragememberstocomeoutinyourcarsormotorbikesto joininwiththecarrunsthatwehaveintheclub.Asalotofworkgoesintoorganizing theruns.AsDerektakesoftheroleclubcaptainitwillbeanexcitingyear.

HelloEveryone,

Anothermonthhasgoneby,andthereareonly221Daysto Christmas!

GlynandIthoroughlyenjoyedtheHighlandFlingheldAnzac WeekendinFeilding.UnfortunatelyforusCyrilChevdidn’t wanttocometotheparty!AftertheweekpriorwithGlyn tinkeringandtweaking,andmeassistingwithx3tows,Cyril Truckwasreadytogo(orsowethought)andmadehisgrand entranceattheCoachHouseCarParkforthestartoftherallyearlyontheSaturday morning.Hegotofftoagoodstartwith60milesontheclockandthendecidedhe wantedtogohomeandrestinthegaragefortherestoftheweekend.Allwasnotlost, westillcontinuedtheweekendforthe“social”eventsandhadagreattimecatchingup withfriends,andenjoyinggreatfoodandofcoursegoodwine.

AsIstartwritingthis,IrealisethatmyfirstrunasClubCaptain I’mgoingtobeintheSouthIslandatthe70thAnniversaryof theIrishmanCreekrally,probablynotthebeststarttoanew job!! Butournextbigeventisthe50thNightTrial.Ihave alreadystartedplanningthiseventandatthemomentare waitingfortheTararuaClubtogetbacktomeregardinga halfwaystop.Atthisstagetheplanisforthosewhowantto bringtheirowndinnertotheClubRoomsfrom5pm-the driversbriefingat6:15pm-thefirstcaraway6:30pm,thenapproximately60milesto themidwaybreakafterthatanother60ishmilesbacktotheClubRoomsforthefinish andprizegiving.

ForsomeoftheSundayrunswemightdoafewlocalvisitsthenashortdrivebackto theClubRoomsforafternoonteaanddinnerforthosewhowanttostayon. Therehasbeenanewadditiontoourshed.Yes,Ineededanotherproject!!Iwill havephotosandasmallwriteupinthenextMag.

Oneofmybiggestaimsthisyearistoget10%ofthemembershiptobrancheventscomeonfolks,that’sonly18cars!!!

YesIrealisethatpeoplearebusyandallcostsarehighbutthingsdon’tnormallyget cheaperthantheyarenowandthedaysgobyfastertheolderweget!

Therewerearangeofmakesridden: AJS,BSA,BMW,CZ,Honda,Kawasaki, Matchless,MZ,Norton,RoyalEnfield, Suzuki,Triumph,Velocette,Yamahafrom 1937to2021classics.

ThirtytworidersfromWellington,Wairarapa,ManawatuandWanganuialltookpart withachoiceofrouteaveragespeedeither29or39mph.Allgoodtarsealedroads mostlyruralmeanttherewashardlyanytrafficexceptforSH1&SH3withplentyof passinglanes,especiallywhenyouareonly175ccgoinguphillandcomfortablewith 40-45mphrate,sowewerenotholdingupthe100+kphmainroadtraffic. Someroadsmaybringbackmemories;AnzacParadeSH4,Okoia(partofthe Matarawaroadracecircuitin1949-1954&1965),TurakinaValleyRd,MtCurlRoad (nowfreshlysealedandonceapopularhillclimbvenueforcarclubs,takingiteasy withfreshstone,noenginebrakingwhengoingdownhillona2stroke),Wellington RoadleadingtoplentifullunchstopatMartonBowlingClub.Threerollingcheck points.

TheafternoonroutechoiceswereshortorlongwithplaceslikeParenuiRd(Chris Amonterritory),MakirikiriRd,(thencombiningbothgroups),Fordell,OkoiaRddown hill(avoidingthewetpolishedseal),EastownandbacktotheWanganuiClubroomsfor welcomeT&C+biscuitafteramoistdrizzlyday.

Onlychallengesthistimewastobeflaggedoverbyafollowingmotoristwithmytop boxlidflapping,norrunningoutoffuelthistime.Errolhadaclutchcablebreakjustas hecamebackintheclubrooms.AsparecablesourcedfromanotherfriendlyNorton ownerallowedhimtoridebacktoManawatu.Agoodfriendlybunchofriders. CongratulationstoBillJamesandtheWVCCteamforgreatroads,excellent organization,goodhospitality,andwewillbebackagainnextyear.

The33competitorstakingpartinWanganuiVintageCarClub’s41stAnnualAutumn MotorcycleRallysetofffromtheclubroomsat9.30amonSaturdaymorning,April20. ThebikesoutsidetheBowlingClubinMarton,wherethelunchstopwasheld. Theirmotorbikesrangedfroma1937RoyalEnfieldGtoa2021RoyalEnfield Interceptor.Theytravelledsouthviabackroadswhichincludedthreetimedsections, andontoMarton,wheretheyweretreatedtoadeliciouslunchprovidedbytheladies oftheMartonBowlingClub.

VerdonHeathofLevincamefirstinthePost-70scategoryridinga1988MZETZ250. Afterlunch,theytravelledbacktotheclubroomswiththeoptionofashortorlonger routetogivesomeextraridingtime.Theprize-givingdinnerwasheldonSaturday eveningattheclubrooms.

RobertHeathofFeildingcamefirstinthePost-60scategoryridinga1974CZ175 Sport.

Afterawonderfuldinnerpreparedbyclubmembers,theprize-givingwasheld.On SundaymorningtheygatheredattheclubroomspriortoavisittoMoto74atFordell beforetravellinghome.

FirstinthePostVintagecategorywasNormHillofLowerHuttridinga1938Velocette. Therewasalittlerainalongthewaybut,despitethis,theweekendwasverymuch enjoyedbyall.

TheoverallwinnerwasWillieWoodfromNewPlymouth.Atasprightly88yearsold, hehasattendedmanyralliesonhisbeautiful1958AJS18s.

The2024HighlandFling (whichisforVeteranandVintagevehicles only) tookover100participantsfromasfarafieldasDargavilleand Queenstownover afewsealedroads,numerousunsealedroadsand somefarmtracks.

Allofthiswassettotestthemotoringskillsofthecrewsand imitate theterrainthecarswerebuilttodriveon.

SaturdaysawentrantsrallyingintheHalcombe,WaitunaWest,and Apitiareas.Sundaymorningthe‘Fling’headedtotheTararua Windfarm beforemovingintothePohanginaareaandontothe clubroomsforlunch.

‘Locals’cameouttowatchthecarsgoby.Andinplacesthescenerywasclutteredwithphotographers.

TheoldestcarontheHighlandFlingwasthis1913FordModelT.ThisphotographwastakenonBeaconsfieldValleyRoad.

ThomasHumber’sbicyclefirm,establishedin1868,becameapartofHJLawson's intendedautomobileempireandassuchwasresponsibleforproductionoftheabortive Penningtontricars.Carmanufacturestartedwithanexperimentalwheeldrivedesign, whilemotorcyclesand quadricycleswerealso produced.Theseleadtoaline ofthreewheeledforecarswhich persistedupto1905.Little cameofHumber’sM.D. voiturettewithtwospeedgear, buttheirmoreconventional 1901offeringhadafouranda halfhorsepowerDeDion engine,DeDiontype transmissionandshaftdrive,as wellisasingle-spoke steeringwheelwhichremainedoneofthecompaniestrademarksintheearlyyearsand anticipatedCitroënpracticebymorethanhalfacentury.A12hp2½litre4-cylinder carfollowedin1902,butin1903twomoreambitiousvehiclesappeared,abig20 horsepowerfourandathree-cylinderversionwithmechanicallyoperatedinletvalves, aswellasBritain'sfirstsuccessfuleffortatapopularlightcar.Thiswasthefive horsepowerHumberettewithaDeDion-typeengineof613ccandatwo-speedgearbox withtwosteeringcolumnlevers.Allthesecarshadshaftdrive-Humbersavoidedthe chain.In1904theHumberettewasmadeinamorepowerfulformandupto1908two separatelinesofcarwereproducedinthefactoriesatBeestonandCoventry,the Beestoncarsbeingmoreexpensive.1905foraminiaturefourratedat8/10hp,but withacapacityof2litres,whichwasdevelopedthefollowingyearintoa10/12hp CoventryHumbersellingat£315;Beeston’sofferingthatseasonwasa3½liteT-head foursellingfor£472.10s.The1907versionsoftheBeeston-Humberhadacapacityof 6.3litresandpressurelubrication.

Afterthewarthecompanyconcentratedon solidfamilycars,notedfortheirexcellent workmanshipandall-weatherequipment,as wellastheirconservatism.Sidevalveengines wereusedupto1922butinletoverexhaust layoutsappearedin1923,inwhichyearthere wasalsoanewsmallmodel,the‘8/18’with 12voltcoilignitionat£275.Frontwheelbrakeshadarrivedby1925,although

Humbersadheredtothefoot-operatedtransmissionbrakeforseveralmoreseasons. Thecompanysold4,000carsin1927,thankstothe1056cc‘9/20’,anexcellent2-litre 4-cylinder‘14/40’andanew‘20/55’hpmachine,Humber’sfirstsixformanyyears. Thecarswererestyledin1929,andthefollowingyearoftheeffectoftheRootes takeoverwasseeninthenewlineofsixes,the2.1-litre‘16/50’andthe3½litreSnipe andit’slongchassisstablemate,the Pullman.1930wasalsothelastyear forthe9hpHumbersafterthereafter thecompany'sstapleproductswere upper-middleclassfamilycarsofover twolitrescapacity,althougha1.7litre‘12’appearedin1933and formedthebasisforthelong-stroke 4-cylinderRootesenginesstillbeing manufacturedin1966.Alsoatthe endof1932overheadinletvalves weredropped.In1936the6-cylinder carsacquiredtransverseindependent frontsuspension,whilethebiggest sixeswerenowof4.1litres’capacity.

Only6-cylindercarswereofferedin1938,andhydraulicbrakesappearedon16hpand 21hpmodelsin1939,andwerealsofoundonthefirstSuperSnipe-a‘compact’ evolvedbymountingthe4.1-litreengineinthesmallerchassis-excellentvalueat £398.

Snipe-basedvehiclesservedtheAlliedForceswithdistinctioninWorldWar2andthe newmodelsintroducedin1945werereallyhold-oversfrom1940,withhydraulicsnow standardized,togetherwithanewfourintheshapeofa1.9-litreside-valveHawk basedonHillman’Fourteenof1938/40.TheSuperSnipeandPullmanacquired overheadvalvesin1953,andthe Hawkayearlater,while1956Super Snipescouldbehadwithautomatic transmission.Unitaryconstruction wasusedonaredesignedHawkin 1957,andtwoyearslatertheSuper Snipe(afterashortperiodin abeyance)re-emergedasan altogetherasanaltogethersmaller 2650cccarwithunitaryconstruction. Thiswassoonreplacedbya3-litre developmentwithdiscfrontbrakes. 1962modelsthefour-headlamp pioneeredinAmericain1957.Asmall luxuryHumbercameoutin 1964intheshapeoftheSpectre,basedonHillman’sSuperMinx,butwithoverdriveas standardequipment.During1967allthebigHumbersweredroppedtobereplacedon theBritishmarketbytheAustralian-builtPlymouthValiant.From1968theonly Humberofferingwasthe1.7-litreSceptre,aprestigeeditionoftheHillmanHunter.In itsfinal1976formithadtwincarburettors,82bhpandachoiceofautomaticora 4-speedmanualgearboxwithoverdrive.LikeSunbeam,Humberwasacasualtyofthe Chryslerregime.

Twoengineerswerestandingatthebaseofaflagpolelookingatitstop.Awoman walkedpastandaskedwhattheyweredoing.“We’resupposedtofindtheheightof thisflagpole”saidone,“butwedon’thavealadder”.

Thewomantookawrenchfromherpurse,loosenedacoupleofboltsandlaidthepole downontheground.Shethentookatapemeasurefromherpocketbook,tooka measurement,andannouncedthatitwas21feetand6inchesbeforewalkingaway. Oneengineershookhisheadandlaughed“Alotofgoodthatdoesus.Weaskedfor theheightandshegivesusthelength”.
