Thiseventisagainhostingdisplaysanddemonstrationsfromenthusiastsaroundthe community.Fromcarclubstomodeltrains,manylocalsarekeentoshowtheirpassions. Ifyougotothiseventdon’tforgettocomealongtotheclubroomsduringthesecondhalf oftheafternoonforacuppatomeetupwiththosewhowenttotheMadHattersDayin Woodville,thenmaybestayforaBYODinner.
OurbranchhasbeenapproachedbythePNHospiceto helpoutwiththeirtreeofremembranceatthe entrancetoFarmersinthePlazainPalmerstonNorth. Thisisbeingheldfromthe1stDecemberthroughto the24thDecemberduringthePlaza'sopeninghours.
Every Christmas, outside the Farmers Department Store in the Plaza, the Arohanui Hospice TreeofRemembranceisadornedwithheartfeltmessages.Thesehavebeenleftby membersofourcommunitytohonourtheirlovedoneswhohavepassedawayinexchange forachosendonationtoArohanuiHospice.AfterChristmas,thesemessagesareblessed, burned,andtheashesarescatteredinArohanuiHospice'sgarden.
ArohanuiHospiceisacharityorganisationdedicatedtoprovidingspecialistpalliativecareto over 1100 patients each year across Manawatu, Rangitikei, Tararua, Horowhenua, and Ōtaki. Ourservicesareonlymadepossiblethroughthegeneroussupportofourcommunity,who helpcoverourfundingshortfall,whichforthisfinancialyearisjustover$4million.

ForOurManawatuChildCancerFoundationChristmasEventthisyearinlateNovemberourThemeis WinterWonderland.TogetherwiththeRongoteaLionswearecreatingaSantaCave,haveplanned afantasticmeal-andevenafewgiftstoo.Thedaygenerallyconsistsofactivities,foodandSanta forupwardsof60families(150+people)chatting,connectingandallcomingtogetherduetotheir childrenbeingdiagnosedwithsomeformofChildCancer.

TheVintageOnlyrallywasgreatlyreceivedwith17entriesand peopletravellingfromHawkesBay,WanganuiandLevin. EveryonehadafantasticdaywiththelunchstopatthePahiatua RailCarSocietyandaguidedtouroftheirworkshops. It’sbeenabout15yearssinceIwaslastthereandholysmoke havetheygotaveryimpressivecollectionofRailCarsnow includingthethreeoriginalSilverFern’sthatranontheMainTrunk Line.
ItwasasmallbutenthusiasticgroupthatjoinedinforthelatenoticeSundayJaunt,itwas oneofthoseopportunitiesthatcouldn’tbepassedupratherthanmejustchangingmymind. WehadtheopportunitytoviewBruceLeask’sveryimpressiveGramophonecollectionwhileit wasstillalloutondisplay.SomeveryfascinatingmachinesthatBrucehasputcountlesshours inrestoringandwasdefinitelywellworththevisit.

Itwasanearlymorningstartforusonthe29thofSeptember.DadandIhadtoprepareour 1929ChevroletHalftontruckforitsbigtriptoday(120Milesallup),andwehadtomake surethetoolboxwassortedincasewefellvictimtoabreakdownsomewhere(hopefullynot ontheSaddleRoad!!).Aftertoppinguptheradiator,puttingairinthetyres,fillingupwith petrol,checkingtheoil,strappingthesparetothedeck,andpackingthelunch(themost importantitem!),wehoppedinanddroveofftotheclubrooms.Wearrivedaboutanhour beforestartandhadacuppaandabiscuit(ortwo).
Therewere16vintagesgatheredtogetheronthegraveloutsidetheclubrooms,andsomeone hadalreadygottheircarstuckbytryingtoparkonthewetgrass!Therewereafewpeople fromotherbranches,suchastheBrucePooleinhis1930Chrysler"77"RoadsterfromCHB, RobandLindaO'KeefefromWanganuiintheirBuickTourer,andMikeStewartfromHastingsNapierwayinhisAlvisTourer(thesewerethepeopleweknew,therewereotherstoo).
WehadabriefingfromDerekHaycockbeforewestartedoff(hemadesuretoincludelotsof gravelroadsforus).TherunwasprettymuchthesamerouteastheJuneNightTrial. Previously,ourbumperhadfallenoffnearPahiatuaduringthetrial,butthatwouldn'thappen thistimeaswehadn'tputitbackonyet!!Wesetoffat10:10am,afewcarsafterthefirst, RogerCorlettandhisAustin"7"FeijoaVan.Rogersaidhewouldseeusagainwhenwe passedhimontheopenroad.
Wedidafewgoodmilesbeforeweranintoourfirst(andunfortunatelynotourlast)incident. ThetrucklurcheditselfbackandforththroughAshhurst,sowepulledoverafterthe roundaboutandfoundthatthepointswerearcing.Wefixedtheproblem(wethoughtwe had)andheadedoffonourwayagain.Nomorelurchingfornow....
ForlunchwestoppedatthePahiatuaRailwaySociety.Weallhadagoodchinwagandgas bagandthenhadaniceandveryinterestingtourbytheladswhoworkedhardandrestored thetrainsandcarriages.Theprojectsincludedapassengercarriagethatwasbeingfully restoredtoatrulypristinecondition.Itwaslikerestoringcars,asometimespainstakingbut rewardingprocesswhichneededalotofeffortputin.Allinall,itwasagreattimespentat theRailwaySociety,andsoonenoughwewerebackontheroadagain.
WerolledthroughPahiatuaslowlyandthenbackoverthesaddleroad.
Thegravelroadslookedasiftheyhadhadnewmetallaidonthemanditfeltlikeittoo!! Therewereseveralinstanceswherethetruckseemedthatitwasgoingtocarkit,butthat neverhappened,luckily.Justashortbreaktoadjustthetimingandwewereoffagain. Backonthetarseal,wedroveafewmilesbeforeencounteringanotherproblem,waterwas beingpushedoutoftheradiatoroverflow,notabigissue,butsomethingtobeinvestigated lateron.
Weonlymissedacoupleofturnoffsduringtherally(myfault),butitallworkedoutwellin theend.JustoutofPahiatua,wewerecruisingalong(morelikeslavingalong)oneofthe backroadsamongstalineofthreeoffourcars,thenoutofnowhere,abrightblueAlvistourer roaredpastusliketherewasnothingtoit!Clearlyitwasnoproblemforothervehiclesto climbthesteepsaddleroad,butitwasabitofaneffortforthe"Ol'Groaner",plusthe challengeofholdingupthemoderncarsbehindus,andtryingtofindspacetoletthempass, butoverall,weenjoyedtheentirerallyimmensely(andthemealcookedupbyDerekonthe barby!).
Beforedinnerwehadprizegivingandagoodchat,thendinnerandagoodchat,andthen finallypuddingandanothergoodchat!Itwasawellorganisedeventthatbroughtgreatjoy tousandI'msureeveryoneelseaswell.
BigthankstoDerekandthefamilyforthemappingtherally,makingtherailwaytourhappen, andcookingthedinner.Atrulygreatvintage-onlyevent!

MANAWATU BRANCH MOTORCYCLE RALLY REPORT
ManawatuVintageCarClub-AnnualMotorcycleRally,Saturday12th October:(reportbyRobertHeath).
Thedayturnedoutfineandcrispwitha9degrees start.FifteenCompetitorsfromVCCWhangarei, Wellington,Horowhenua,andWanganuitookpart andincludedthreefromtheManawatuBranch.
Whatisinterestingfromacompetitor’spointofview ismotorcycleralliesdifferfromcarralliesbyhaving noseparatenavigatorfordirectionsor beingableto indicateifyouarebehindoraheadoftheaveragespeed.
Noelectronictimepieces,likeyourcellphone,arepermitted.TheMotorcyclistcompetitorhas alistofroutedirectionsandaspecificaveragespeedinMPH.Thiscreatesextrachallenges whenyourbikespeedoonlyreadsinKM.So,preparationaftertherallybriefingistoattach yourrouteinstructionstoyourrollersystemthatholdstheinstructionssoyoucanreadand advancetheinstructionsasyouridealong.YourMPHaveragespeedneedstobeconverted toKPHaveragespeedforsomeJapaneseorEuropeanmotorcycles.Youthenaimtorideat thejustabovetheaveragespeedtoallowfordelaysatcrossroads,trafficlights,road conditions,gettinglostetc.
Ourrallythisyearstartedfromourclubrooms,ontoHiwinui,thentheFiveMiledistance checksoyoucouldseeifyourspeedoreads5milesexactly,(mayhavetogoslowerorfaster ifyourspeedoreadsdifferently).TherouteontoColyton,Feilding,Stanway,Tokorangi, Halcombe,Maewa,Beaconsfield,VinegarHill,thenHuntervilleforLunchstop&refuel.Three checkpointswereencountered.Wevisitedthesecondpointtwice,whichreducesthenumber ofsupportMarshallsneeded.Hopeyoutwodidn’tfreezeandspecialthankstoMarshallsKen andAnnette.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I PUT SUGAR IN SOMEONE’S PETROL TANK?

Forsomereason,there'sacommonrumouraboutsugarandgasthat'sbeenaroundfor decades.Supposedly,ifyoupoursugarintosomeone'sgastank,youwilldisablethecar. Thesugarissupposedtoreactwiththegasolineandturnintoasemisolid,gooeysubstance thattotallyclogsupthegastank,thefuellinesandsoon.
Itmaysoundgreat,especiallyifyouhaveagrudgeagainstsomeone.Theproblemwiththis rumouristhatitsimplyisn'ttrue.
Howfuelfiltershelp
Forstarters,youhaveafuelfilter.Thisdoesexactlywhatitsays:filtersoutanydebrisor impuritiesthatmighthavegottenintoyourgastanksomehow.Soiftherewerelittlesugar crystalsinyourgasoline,thefuelfilterwouldstopthembeforetheycoulddamagetheengine. Thenthere'sthefactthatplainoldsugardoesnotdissolveingasoline;itjustsinkstothe bottomofthegastank.
AUniversityofCalifornia,Berkeleyresearchertestedthismythexperimentallywaybackin 1994byputtingsugarintogasolineandthenspinningitinacentrifuge.Hemeasuredhow muchundissolvedsugarspunoutofthefluidandthencalculatedhowmuchsugarremained dissolvedinthegasoline.Itwaslessthanateaspoonfor15gallonsofgas-morethanafull tankinmanycars.
Evenifyouhavelessthanafulltankandsomeonedumpssugarinthere,thefluidcanonly incorporatesomuchsugar.You'lljusthavemoreundissolvedsugarsludgeatthebottomof thetank.Annoyingforsure,butnotdamagingtheengine.
HowFuelPumpshelp
Backwhenthemythstartedinthe1950’s,fuelpumpsweremechanicalandlocatedatthe bottomofthefueltank,soiftherewasabigglobofsugarthere,itwouldstopuptheflowof thefuel.Thesugarwasn'tgettingintotheengine,butneitherwasthegasolinetheengine neededtorun.
Modernfuelpumpsareelectronic,butit'spossibletheycouldbefoiledbyaglobofsugar. Again,itmerelyrequirescleaningoutthetankineithercase.
Moredangerousthansugar
So,whatwillmessupanengineifit'saddedtothefuel?Water.Butitwouldhavetobealot ofit.
Rememberthatenginesusecombustiontomakethewheelsmove,whichmeansthousandsof littleexplosionsinthecylinders.Ifyoupouralotofwaterintoafueltank,itsinkstothe bottomofthetank.Thewatergetsintotheengineand,ifthere'senoughwaterinthe cylinders,thefueldoesnotcombust.Theengineisdeadinthewater,youmightsay.
Buteventhisisn'ttheendoftheroadforyourengine.Usingafueltreatmentcanchemically clearoutthewaterandrevivetheengine.

JustacoupleofmonthsagoLaurieandWendywentbacktoAustraliatojointhe2024 VeteranTour.
ThisyearthetourtookinsomeofthesoutheastQueenslandterritory.Andlikelastyear, their1906Cadilacstayedhomeandtheyjoinedthetourinacampervan,assistingasrally support.
Lauriehasagainkindlysharedsomeofthephotographshetookwiththeeditorforincluding intheTourersothatmemberscangetalookatsomeoftheVeterancarsthatheandWendy mingledwith.
