CHAIRPERSON’S C

Hi everyone. It has been a great busy month. We started the month off with nearly 30 cars turning up for the Sunday run. I wish to thank Jillian and Maurice Wasley for having us all there at their place.

Jillian had a lovely afternoon tea for all of us. It was also great to see the work that Maurice has done on the truck. Thank you to Derek for showing the photos and talking about the Irishman Creek Rally. I am sorry I wasn’t there as I had Nana duties in Hamilton. It certainly has been a cold winter so far. So it was nice to have our winter warmer. We had a good number come to the Mid Year Winter Warmer on Saturday Night. A very big thank to Cathy for organizing everything and the lovely food we had.

As we have more and more events at the club rooms it would be nice if we could have a number of people to go on a roster to help with the kitchen. The more people we have on the roster the least time you will be in the kitchen.

Please don’t forget our Daffodil day on the 25th August in Feilding. It would be great to see a good number of cars to support The Cancer Society. I wish to thank Annette Foot for all her hard work she has done for this display and the run back to the club rooms.

On the 6th of July we had our 1st meeting for the ladies, we had a coffee morning get together. It was a good turnout for the first one. We would like to continue this once a month, so on the 1st Saturday of the month we will be holding something for the ladies of the club.

So, calling all ladies you are welcome on Saturday August 3rd We will be meeting at 116 Café in Milson at 10.30am, for coffee or brunch.

Hello Everyone,

Spring is just around the corner! Well maybe in a few more weeks - officially 1st September I’m told! Who else is looking forward to warmer weather, blooming flowers, and longer days? Waking up to bird song, sunshine and warmth throughout Spring can be hugely uplifting, evoking happiness, optimism and positivity that many of us struggle with in Winter! We endeavoured to bring a bit of “warmth” into the Members Club Room on Saturday night with the Mid Year Winter Warmer Dinner. Many thanks to all those that turned out for a delicious spit roast meal/dessert, a few drinkies, and a great catch up with other members. Thank you to Committee Members for all your efforts in helping to make the evening a success.

LADIES FRIENDSHIP GROUP - MORNING TEA

Many thanks to Esther Williams (our Chairperson) for organising the first “Ladies Get Together for Manawatu Branch”! A very successful event indeed. A good turn out, commencing at 10.30 am at Cafe Boho in Palmy, and if my eyesight isn’t failing me just yet, I think it was close to 1 pm when the last few ladies left! Next get together is Saturday 3rd August - (advertisedelsewhereinthisissue). It was so lovely to have Pam Yeatman (Canterbury Member) join us. Glyn and I met Pam and her hubby Peter on the last South Island Club Captain’s Tour. Sadly Peter has passed away and Pam has relocated recently to the Manawatu to be closer to her family. It was great to catch up with her, and a surprise for Esther who didn’t know her long time friend would be joining us! So if you have nothing planned for 3 August, come along Ladies and join us - the more the merrier!

“INTER-BRANCH QUIZ NIGHT” Central Hawkes Bay VS Manawatu

Advertisedelsewhereinthisissue. The Trophy is polished and ready to go! - All we need now is a strong team of Quizzers from our Branch to bring it home! So put the date in your diary - Wednesday 18th September (our usual club night). Numbers required by 12th September. Please advise Esther if you are planning to come at e williams@xtra.co.nz Or give her a call on 0272437275. Carpooling is encouraged!

“INTER-BRANCH CAMP OUT”

- Labour Weekend - Sat 26th Oct - Mon 28th Oct (2nights)

Go to the Base Camp website to check out the venue https://www.basecamprangi.com The link for the Booking Portal for the accommodation will be available soon. If you are on the mailing list then you will receive an email shortly with the link. There’s still time to Register - If you are interested, please email Glyn and Cathy ( cbz1@xtra.co.nz ) to go on the mailing list for further updates.

Enjoy the rest of your month!

CLUB CAPTAIN’S RAMBLE - DEREK HAYCOCK

So the new Sunday Jaunt format turned out to be a huge success with 30 cars and 50 people turning up at the Wasley’s to have a look at the 1918 Walker Electric truck after tucking into a lovely afternoon tea put on by our hosts. A huge thank you Maurice and Jillian for all their efforts on the day.

Next month all going to plan we will be visiting a private collection in the middle of Feilding that has some very historical racing cars and memorabilia. (Not the Rush collection)

The Vintage rally in September will be going back to its original format of Vintage Only to encourage people to get their Vintage class vehicles out of the shed as this was the original idea of having this rally.

Planning is well under way for the 2025 Highland Fling with the updated logo design currently being worked on at Robert Embroidery as we speak and by the feedback I received while on Irishman there will be quite a few more South Islanders attending next year.

See you all at the Daffodil Day display on the 25th of August.

Happy Motoring

Derek

‘SHED RAID’ TO MAURICE AND JILLIAN WASLEY’S TO SEE PROGRESS ON THE WALKER ELECTRIC TRUCK RESTORATION

▪ The February 2023 Tourer included an article on Walker Electric Trucks, their history, and a brief look at their use by the Rongotea Co-op Dairy Company.

▪ The May 2023 issue of the Tourer included a four-page article on the Walker Electric truck which Maurice and Jillian acquired a few years ago with a view to restoration.

That article described the vehicle, Jillian’s family connection to it, some of it’s specifications etc., and showed the project as it was in early 2023.

The truck as it was in April last year – in the process of being stripped down by Maurice.

If you did not keep copies of those two Tourers they are available online. The link to earlier issues is below - cut and paste it into your browser: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1gTU-shJle-YE1OSIdMKqvu3joxGQ6HdS?usp=share_link

The Walker Electric Truck as it was when it was picked up by Maurice and Jillian.

The Sunday Jaunt began in the Feilding Coachhouse Museum carpark.

Approximately 30 cars turned up for the July Sunday Jaunt. A couple met at the venue but the remainder lined up at the Coachhouse Museum making a rather impressive display. Some of the public who saw the cars parked up ventured into the carpark to take a closer look.

Bottomright: Derek giving a briefing prior to departure.

At Maurice and Jillian’s, most cars needed to park up on the road – creating a show of vintage and classic cars that the residents had probably not seen on their front berms.

A very big thank you to Maurice and Jillian for providing a very nice afternoon tea before the focus of the afternoon turned to the sheds and the restoration.

Above and left: the chassis –sandblasted, repaired and primed.

Below: the electric motor housing and armature beneath it. The brakes are at each end of the motor casing.

Above top: one of the rear road wheels – Above left: the assembly which fits into the road wheel.

Above right: sketch showing the view of an assembled rear wheel with the outer steel disk removed.

Below: springs and other things – some of Maurice’s refurbished parts - all meticulously prepared by Maurice before the reassembly process begins.

1923 AUSTIN SEVEN

Sourced from ‘An Era of Motoring – The vehicles of a Past Age’. Based on the collection at the National Motor Museum, Beaulieu.

Generations of British motorists cut their teeth on it. Who has forgotten the crude ‘spit-and-hope’ lubrication, the ineffectual uncoupled four-wheel brakes, the bouncy suspension, the infinitesimal travel of the clutch pedal (it felt like one-sixteenth of an inch), the distinct tinkle of the fixed starting handle, and the dashboard dominated by a long list of Sir Herbert Austin's patents? Then there were the Austin 7 specials created with the aid of three-ply, fibreglass and the Bowden brake conversion, fashionable until Chummies started to fetch £500 at specialty auctions, and became, so as to speak, protected birds.

The Austin 7, alas!, outgrew its strength, and when the last ones appeared in 1939 they were over bodied (13cwt for a saloon) and still under braked despite the Girling rods all round. A Morris or Standard 8 was a better buy. But in 1922 the Austin was a major achievement. Here was a big car in miniature with no cyclecar trappings (from the mechanical starter which soon gave way to a proper electric affair), capable of transporting two adults and two children in reasonable comfort at 45 miles per hour. A gallon of petrol sufficed for fifty miles, and the pram hood (as seen on this early example - right) added a charm lost in later years. It cost only £165 too. Sir Herbert was right: it was an effective replacement for the motorcycle and sidecar, which he termed ‘an unmechanical contraption’.

Many family motorcyclists did not agree. But the baby was soon selling 20,000 a year and it's descendants are multitude. From Morris’s answer, the ‘Minor’ came the M.G. ‘Midget’, Rosengart made Austin Sevens in France, and Dixi made them in Germany, where they developed into the advanced B.M.W’s of the 1930s. The American Austin Seven was a flop but in 1940 it's makers produced the prototype Jeep. When the parent firm finally discarded the Baby, the engine’s manufacturing rights went to Reliant of Tamworth, thus fathering another successful family. William Lyons’s first step away from sidecars was the smart little Austin Swallow of 1927, while Colin Chapman's backyard Austin specials evolved into the Lotus.

Add to this countless sports, racing, commercial, military and marine-engine adaptions of the 1920s and 1930s, and it has to be admitted that Sir Herbert started something July 1922.

▪ Number of cylinders: 4-cylinder sv

▪ Bore, stroke, capacity: 56 x 76 mm., 747 c.c.

▪ Ignition: High tension magneto.

▪ Gears: Three speed.

▪ Transmission: Shaft.

▪ Brakes: Foot on front wheels : hand on rear wheels.

▪ Suspension: Transverse: quarter-elliptic.

▪ Price when new: £165.

▪ Model current: 1923 to 1939

ENGLAND’S BEST DEAD CAR COMPANIES

Allard

Sydney Allard built almost 2000 cars between 1946 and 1957, many of them fast American V8-engined sports cars, although there were plenty of saloons and even a woody wagon.

But despite an array of models, the marques’ top brass failed to assess the direction in which the automotive world had headed and thus the final model from the company - the two seater Palm Beach was said to have been a year behind its competitors for tech and driving dynamics. Allard went into administration in 1957.

RARE 1903 MERCEDES DUBBED THE ‘WORLDS FIRST

SUPERCAR’ SELLS FOR £8.6MILLION

Its hammer price has made it the most expensive pre-1930s motor ever bought at auction. The 'supercar' could reach speeds of 80mph.

The car spent six decades on display at the National Motor Museum, Beaulieu, Hants.

The MercedesSimplex 60 HPwhich could reach 80mph and was then the fastest production car in the world - is one of only five left.

It was bought 121 years ago by newspaper magnate

Alfred Harmsworth, 1st Viscount Northcliffe. The car later spent six decades on display at the National Motor Museum, Beaulieu, Hants.

It was sold in Florida by Gooding & Company. He said: “It was a real thrill to be there for such an iconic piece of motoring history.”

"The marquee was packed and the bidding started at $5 million (£3.9m), swiftly moving through the gears to $10 million (£7.8m).

"It then became a two-way battle which ended with the hammer falling at a breathtaking $11 million (£8.6m ) - yet another world record for Gooding and Company."

BITS AND PIECES FROM BYGONE DAYS

A Snapshot from Jaguar History

The photograph below shows Jaguar engines under test in 1956. At this time, engine production still took place at the Browns Lane site, although it would later be transferred to the former Daimler facility at Radford.

The engines in this photograph are XK units, each having been attached to its gearbox before being mounted on a Froude ‘water brake’ dynamometer. Here an exhaust extraction pipe was added as well as a fuel supply and an external oil pressure gauge, with the engine plumbed into an external radiator on the dynamometer, itself cooled by a fan shrouded in mesh. Curiously, some engines were run on petrol, but some were run on the town gas supply using a special carburettor.

Bits and Pieces from Bygone days :

Each engine was subject to a surprisingly rigorous test: having first set the idle speed and ignition timing, it was run for up to two hours at 2000rpm before having the sump removed and flushed out before refilling with fresh oil and checked again.

The full test took some four hours and engines recording a maximum power output below specification were rejected.

After a successful test, the engines were sprayed with a lanolin wax to protect the decorative cam covers during their onward transit to the final car assembly and then their first owner.

The test would later be reduced to around 40 minutes in the 1970s, by which time engine production had moved to the former Daimler site at Radford.

In the Beaded Wheels magazine some of the article was printed double page width. In setting the article out in this issue of the Tourer it has been necessary to ‘re‘-format some pages to enable it to be viewed single page width.
