Thisyear’sAGMwastheendofaneraforquiteafewofthemanagement CommitteeincludingthenationalpresidentDianeQuariewhohavebeenintheir currentpositionsforseventotenyears.Withallpositionsonlyhavingone candidatestandingforeachroletheprocesswasverysimpleandstraightforward.

TheFederationofMotoringClubsSurveyhadafantasticresponseandthefull reportonthisisexpectedoutinSeptember.

TherewerefiftyfiveFiftyYearbadgesawardedinthelastyearwithsevenSixty Yearbadgesawarded.

NextwehadapresentationregardingthechangeswithTheIncorporatedSocieties Act.Thisisgoingtomeanarevampofourconstitutionatbothaclubandnational level.Therewasareasonableamountofdebateonthisandstilllotsmoretocome!

Theannouncementwasmaderegardingthe2026VeroRallyanditwasawardedto NelsontobeheldaroundMarchAprilwithadatetobeconfirmed.

TheJohnLGoddardTrophythisyearwasawardedtoSteveKeysforthe magnificentrestorationofhis1938DiamondTTexacotanker.

Alltheannualreportswereacceptedwithnoissues.

TheCalendarofeventswasalsoacceptedwiththeNorthIslandClubCaptionstour nextyearfinishingtoincludeourRuahineRamble.The2025NationalMotorcycle rallyalsoorganizedbyGlynwillbefromSaturday25th JanuarytoFriday31st based intheManawatu.

TherewillbeaNorthIslandMonteCarloRally14/15SeptemberfinishinginTaupo.

TheonlynoticeofMotionwastheoneonBranchesbeingabletouseadifferent nameforpromotion(thisisalreadydonebyseveralbranches).Thevotingwasvery lowonthisat1158anditpassed.

Therewasasmallamountofdiscussionontheproblemsmembershavehadwith Veroclaimssonationalofficewerecontactingthemtogetthissorted.

TheExecutivemeetingstartedat7:30pmonFridaynight(11th)andwhatan excitingwaytospendaFridaynightinNelson!!!

Thebudgetwasthemaintopicforthenight,withthemassiveincreaseinpostage costsfortheBeadedWheelsbeingthemainconcern,iftheNationalbodydidnot havethecurrentbankbalancefromtheinsurancepayoutaftertheearthquake therewouldhavebeenahugedeficit,butthismoneyisonlytheirshorttermas theyhavetovacatetheirexistingbuildinginthenottoodistantfuture.So,the moneycannotbereliedoninthefuture.

ThedebatewasovertheamounttoraisetheNationalLevyasithasremainedthe samesince2018.Thethreeproposalswere-

1.Leaveitthesameandrelyontheinvestedmoneyforaslongaspossiblebut realisticallythatcouldchangeveryquicklyifanappropriatebuildingwas found.

2.Makeanincreaseof$18dollars,thiswouldgiveasurplusofapproximately $4000butthatwouldsoondisappeariftherewereanypriceincreases.

3.Theonlyonethatmadesensewasa$25increase,thiswillgiveagoodbalance goingforward.Thiswasarguedaboutforanhour.Ipointedoutearlyonin thedebatethatthecurrentminimumwageisapproximately$23anhoursoif wearguedaboutthisforanhoursomeoneonminimumwagehasjustmade upthedeficit.Afterthisitwasplaintoseethatquiteafewofthedelegates havebeenretiredforsolongtheyhavenotouchonrealityandaccordingto oneofthemImusthaveahighpayingjob!

Thebestlaughformewasonebranchsuggesteda$4increasewasappropriate. Thankfullycommonsenseprevailedandtheincreasewaspassed.

Therewasashortdebateaboutaoneoffjoiningfeethatsomebranchesusedto chargebutitwasgenerallyagreedthatthiswoulddiscouragenewmembers. Theruleshavebeenloosenedbytheinsurancecouncillettingpre1976carsthat havehadwaterdamagetoberepairedratherthanwrittenoffinstantly.

Branchmanualswillneedtobeupdatedwhenthenewconstitutionissorted.

Thenextitemthatneedstobesortedis-

Nationality,howtheclubasawholeisrununderthenewIncorporatedSocieties Act.Thisisgoingtobeverytediousandcertainlynotlookingforwardtothetwo daymeetinginMarch!

Thisisafrontviewofa1913or1914Overlandwithlicenseplatesindicatingthatitwaswreckedin1919 inNewJersey.Thesidewiththebentfenderandbrokenwheelshowstheframeintact,whiletherighthandframe(butnotthefender)isbadlybent.

ThiswreckinflictedheavydamagetotheModelTFordontheright.Theunidentifiedlargetouringcar ontheleftappearsasthoughitmayhavebeenrepairable.Noticethebroomproppedagainsttherear wheel,whichsomeoneusedtosweepdebris.

CYCLECARS

Acyclecarwasatypeofsmall,lightweightandinexpensivemotorisedcarwhichwas manufacturedinEuropeandtheUnitedStatesbetween1910andtheearly1920s.

Thepurposeofcyclecarswastofillagapinthemarketbetweenthemotorcycleand thecar.Akeycharacteristicwasthatitcouldaccommodateonlytwopassengers sittingintandem.

Thedemiseofcyclecarswasduetolargercars-suchastheCitroënTypeC,Austin7 andMorrisCowley-becomingmoreaffordable.Small,inexpensivevehicles reappearedafterWorldWarII,andwereknownasmicrocars.

The Jappiccyclecar,firstenteredatBrooklandsontheEasterMondaymeetingof 1925,wasatinytwoseatercyclecarthathada344ccJAPmotorcycleengine.

ThecarwasdesignedbyH.M.WaltersandbuiltbythecoachbuildersJarvisof Wimbledon.

Theframewasmadefromthewoodashwith3/32inchsteelflitchplatesandtubular cross-members.Ithadexpandingrearbrakesontherear,butnofrontbrakes.

Thewheelswhereshodwith650x65motorcycletyres,whichwereattachedbyachaindrivenaxletoatwo-portoverheadvalve74x80mmsingle-cylinderJAPengineviaa three-speedgearbox(chain-drivenfromtheengine).

WaltersmanagedtobreaktheClassJflyingmilerecordinthecarataspeedof70.33 mph,butby1926,theoriginalenginewasreplacedwitha495ccJAPengine.Thecar wasthenobtainedbyMrsGwendaStewart,whochangedthecarsnametoHawkesStewartandrefittedtheoriginal344ccengine.Unfortunatelythecarwasdestroyedin agaragefire1932.

JAPENGINES

JohnA.Prestwich,anengineer,commencedmanufactureofscientificinstrumentsin 1895whenhewas20,initiallybehindhisfather'shouseinLansdowneRoad, Tottenham,London.By1911hehadmovedtonewpremisesinTariffRoad,withinthe NorthumberlandParkareaofTottenham,London,andwhichstillexistedin2015.

Prestwichwasinitiallybestknownforhiscinematographycamerasandprojectors.He workedwithS.Z.deFerrantiandlaterthecinemapioneerWilliamFriese-Greene.

Circa1902,J.A.PrestwichandCompanybeganmanufacturingmotorcycleengines whichwereusedinmanymotorcyclemarques.Themotorcycleengineswere associatedwithracingandrecordsuccessandwereusedinspeedwaybikesintothe 1960s.

Prestwichalsomadeenginesforaeroplanes.In1919PrestwichformedPencilsLimited toexploithisinventionofnewmachineryandthecompanymadeMasterPencils,also inTariffRoad.Inthenineteenthirtiesengineproductionincreasinglyfocusedonsmall industrialandagriculturalengines.

DuringWW2Prestwichproducedaround240,000industrialpetrolenginesinsupportof thewareffort,togetherwithmillionsofaircraftparts,fuses,etc.

In1951theassetsofJ.A.PrestwichandCompanyLimitedandPencilsLtdweretaken overbyJ.A.PrestwichIndustriesLimitedwhichwasregisteredon23April1951and floatedontheLondonStockExchangeshortlyafter.By1957practicallyalltheshares inthecompanyhadbeenacquiredbyVilliersEngineeringCompanywhichalsomade motorcycleandindustrialengines.TheengineeringworksinNorthumberlandPark closedin1963andJ.A.PrestwichIndustriesLimitedwasliquidatedin1964.

Aircraft

Earlyaircraftwerelightandbasic,andneededareliablelightweightengineforpower. JAPmotorcycleengineswereoftenusedinthisapplication.AJAPenginewas originallyfittedinAVRoe's1909triplane,regardedasthefirstall-Britishaircraft,and forawhilePrestwichandRoehadapartnership.JAPrestwichatfirstwoulddeliverthe sameenginetotheaircraftmanufacturer,allowingthemtomakelocalmodificationsmainlylargerventuritubesforthecarburettor,toallowforgreaterairintakeat altitude. Inthelate1920sandearly1930sJAPrestwichproducedvariousheavier enginesunderlicence,includingthosefortheUKmarketforAeronca.

Motorcycles

From1903to1908completemotorcycleswereproducedfromthedevelopmentofthe firstoverheadvalvemotorcycleenginetobeproducedintheUK.

Afterthatthefactoryconcentratedonsupplyingitsenginestoothermanufacturers, includingBroughSuperior,TriumphMotorcycles,A.J.Stevens&Co.Ltd,EnfieldCycle Co,HazlewoodsLimited,ZenithMotorcycles,GrindlayPeerlessandHRDMotorcycles, theforerunnerofVincentMotorcycles.Machinesthatincorporateditsenginesincluded theAJSModelD,fabricatedfortheRussiansintheFirstWorldWar.

JAPexportedsignificantnumbersofenginestoforeignmotorcyclemanufacturers includingDreschandTerrotinFrance,andArdie,HeckerandTornaxinGermany.

Latterly,JAPengines(underVillierscontrol)wereusedinmotorcycleracing,andmost commonlyspeedwayordirttrack.Variousenthusiastscontinueddevelopmentofthe engineintothe70'sprimarilyforgrasstrack,speedwayandlongtrackuse.Variants includedtheuseof4valveheads,twinsparkplugsandearlyelectronicignition systems.Someweremodifiedtorunasalcoholfuelledenginesprimarilyforspeedway use.Alltheengineswere4stroke.Useoftheenginedeclinedinthe70'sas competingenginesfromJawa-CZandWeslakeweredevelopedgivingbetter performance.

Motorcars

JAPengineswereextensivelyusedincyclecarsinthe 1910to1914periodwhentheywerepopularwith smallmanufacturers.In1914JAPannouncedanew enginemadespecificallyforthecyclecar:aV-twinof 90mmboreand85mmstroke(1082cc).Theengine hadalargerflywheelthanthemotorcycleengineand anenclosedmagnetodrive.Theenginewasillustrated fittedtoaMorganthree-wheeler.

InlightofJAP'sdevelopmentofhigh-poweredlight enginesforspeedway,somelowvolumepre-warcar manufacturers,includingG.N.,T.B.,MorganMotor

CompanyandReliant,usedJAPenginestopowertheirvehicles. ThisuseoftheJAPextendedintomotorracingafterWW2.Mostwereusedin specialistUKlightweightformulas,ormoreextensivelyinFormula3andFormula2 racingandinhillclimbingafterdevelopmentsbyJohnCooper.Coopercarspowered byJAPengineswontheBritishHillClimbChampionshipforelevenconsecutiveyears. Initslaterlife,JAPrestwichproducedcomponentsforothervehiclemanufacturers, includingthecylinderheadfortheLotusCortinaandtheearlyversionsoftheFordbasedLotusElanengine.

Thehighlightofthefirstdayin AyrwasavisittoTomCallow’s Toybox.Tom’sshedcontains allsortsofinterestingobjects fromtractorstoastreetorgan andeverythinginbetween. Herestoredhisfirsttractorin 1984andhasnotstopped restoringsince,accumulatinga formidablecollectionofold tractorsandmachinery togetherwithlotsofotherbits andpieces.

Itwasthenontothe coastaltownofGroper Creekforlunch.Thisarea iswellknownforits fishingandcrabbing.

Day2inAyrbeganwitha

displayofvehiclesatPlantationPark,andwhilelocalswerecheckingoutthe vehicles,rallyparticipantswentexploringtheparkmarketswhichprovedtooffera diversemixofhandicrafts,collectablesandfreshproduce.

ItwasthenashortdrivetoAlvaBeachforlunch.Alvaisasmalltownshipmadeup withamixtureofholidayhomesandpermanentresidences.

OnthelastdayinAyr,participantsvisitedtheBrandonHeritagePrecinctinthe Burdekinarea.Thiswasanawesomecollectionoftractors,machinery,and otherinterestingitems.

Duringitsproductionrun,theEssexwasconsideredasmallcarandwasaffordably priced.TheEssexisgenerallycreditedwithstartingatrendawayfromopentouring carsdesigntowardenclosedpassengercompartments.

TheEssexwasintroducedasalow-priced lineat$1,595byHudsonin1919,featured a2.9-litre4cylinderenginedeveloping 55brakehorsepower,whichgaveitatop speedof60milesperhourinstandard form.Itwasrecognisablebyit'sangular linesandradiatorshuttersandthevery cheapcoach(2doorsedan)availableat $1,295in1922madeitabestseller. In1924therapidfourwassupplantedby a2.1-litreside-valve6,laterenlargedto 2.5-litres.

ThismodelpushedHudsonsalesuptoover300,000in1929,inwhichyearthe companynowrankedthirdintheUSAwith6.6%ofthetotalregistrations. Four-wheelbrakeswereanoptionalextrain1927,andstandardin1928.TheEssex wasequallypopularinBritainasthe cheapestformofmulti-cylindermotoring available-costing£250from1927to1929 and£235in1930,whenthenew18.2 horsepowerChallengerwithribbonradiator and60brakehorsepowerenginewas introduced.In1931itsoldforamere £185.In1932theEssexgrewupintoa 3.2-litrecarwithVradiator,detachablewire wheels,freewheelandStartixautomatic starter,butitwassupplantedthefollowing seasonbytheTerraplane.
